Abstract
In this study, the formation of clove essential oil loaded chitosan nanocapsules (CEO/CS-NCs) was achieved by the ionotropic gelation technology. The spherical shape and core-shell structure of CEO/CS-NCs were characterized by SEM, TEM, and FT-IR. CEO/CS-NCs have a reasonable encapsulation efficiency rate of 39 % and an average size of 253.63 nm. The simulated release of CEO/CS-NCs in a citric acid buffer solution shows that the nano-encapsulation technology could control the sustained release of clove essential oil (CEO). The shelf life of untreated blueberries at room temperature is only about 3 days, while CEO/CS-NCs combined with low-temperature storage can extend the shelf life to about 12 days. The quality characteristic of blueberries, including fruit firmness and moisture content, were effectively maintained, and the rotting rate of blueberries was significantly reduced with CEO/CS-NCs. As a natural preservative, CEO/CS-NCs have a good antioxidant activity close to the commercial antioxidant butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and a high antibacterial activity against pathogenic bacteria (PB) isolated from naturally occurring blueberries. Therefore, this study not only gives a theoretical basis for the development of CEO as a commercial preservative but also provides a practical solution to solve the protection challenge of preserving blueberries.

Abstract
Breast and cervical cancers are the most common heterogeneous malignancies in women. Chemotherapy with conventional drug delivery systems having several limitations along with development of multidrug resistance compelled us to seek out targeted therapeutics. Nanoparticles are suitable substitutes to circumvent multidrug resistance for the targeted treatment of cancer. The current study was aimed to investigate the anticancer effect of carvacrol-loaded chitosan nanoparticles with topoisomerase inhibitors. The average size of carvacrol-loaded chitosan nanoparticles was found to be 80 nm with 24.7 mV ζ-potential, and maximum absorbance was observed at 275 nm. Among all drug combinations, the carvacrol nanoparticles with the doxorubicin combination group exerted greater dose-dependent growth inhibition of both MCF-7 and HeLa cells as compared to single carvacrol nanoparticles and doxorubicin. Combination index values of carvacrol nanoparticles and the doxorubicin combination group showed a strong synergistic effect as they were found to be between 0.2 and 0.4, 0.31 for MCF-7 and 0.34 for HeLa cells. The carvacrol nanoparticles in combination with doxorubicin on MCF-7 cells reduced the dose 16.32-fold for carvacrol nanoparticles and 4.09-fold for doxorubicin at 6.23 μg/mL IC50, while on HeLa cells, this combination reduced the dose 13.18-fold for carvacrol nanoparticles and 3.83-fold for doxorubicin at 9.33 μg/mL IC50. As the dose reduction values were greater than 1, they indicated favorable dose reduction. It was concluded that the combination of carvacrol-loaded chitosan nanoparticles with topoisomerase inhibitors may represent an innovative and promising strategy to improve the efficacy, resistance, and targeted delivery of chemotherapeutics in cancer.

Abstract
Due to the growing demand for self-health and safety, eco-friendly health textile products with natural colors and pharmacological functionalities have gained considerable popularity. Rapid adsorption and controlled release of active molecules are important issues for functional health textiles. In this study, a functionalized chitosan-based hydrogel composite silk fabric was prepared using chitosan, 3-carboxyphenylboronic acid, and 3-(2, 3-epoxypropyl oxygen) propyl silane by dip-pad and vacuum freeze-drying techniques. The results showed that the incorporation of chitosan/phenylboronic/SiO2 hydrogel into silk fibers improved the UV protection capacity, mechanical properties, and adsorption properties of silk fabrics. The effects of various parameters on the luteolin adsorption properties of silk fabrics were discussed, including metal salt types, salt dosage, pH value, dyeing temperature, initial luteolin concentration, and dyeing time. Under the dyeing temperature of 60 °C and pH of 6.8, the luteolin exhaustion of the composite silk was more than that of the untreated silk, and the adsorption process followed the quasi-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. Furthermore, the luteolin-dyed composite silk materials exhibited strong antioxidant activity and controllable release behavior with various pH levels. The as-prepared chitosan-hydrogel composite silk could be a promising material for the sustained release of drugs in medical and healthcare textiles.

Abstract
The development of antibiotic-free antibacterial strategies applied in the control of bacterial and biofilm proliferation on surfaces is an important topic in discussion in the literature. Essential oils have been explored as isolated and combined components to act as an antibacterial material that inhibits bacterial proliferation, avoiding the contamination of surfaces. Herein, cellulose acetate electrospun fibers impregnated with essential oils of clove, cinnamon and eucalyptus and their combination (clove + cinnamon, cinnamon + eucalyptus and clove + eucalyptus) were explored against the standard strain of Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923). As isolated components, the best performance follows the order clove>cinnamon>eucalyptus essential oil. The association of clove and cinnamon into cellulose acetate electrospun fibers returned a promising and fast antibacterial and antibiofilm activity (improvement in 65%), as a piece of evidence that synergism is observed for the association of essential oils incorporated into electrospun fibers that preserves the antibacterial activity by encapsulation of components.

Abstract
Multidrug resistance in breast cancer and the associated side-effects of anticancer therapies are significant hurdles in chemotherapy-based treatment. Biodegradable polymeric nano-based targeted drug delivery technologies showed tremendous advantages in targeted local delivery with limited off-targeted side effects. Therefore, there is a persistent need to develop targeted nanomedicine systems for treatment of breast cancer. The current research attempted to develop poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles loaded with raloxifene by modified emulsification solvent diffusion evaporation method to improve oral bioavailability by using Taguchi design. It was observed that the optimized formulation (1:4 drug to polymer ratio) poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) showed a mean particle size and Polydispersity index of 218 ± 23.7 nm and 0.231 ± 0.04, respectively. The entrapment efficiency was found to be 82.30% ± 1.02%. In vitro drug delivery was found to be 92.5% ± 1.48% in 40 h. The nanoparticles were to remain stable at 2°C-8°C even after 30 days. Differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy characterization techniques showed that there was no interaction between the drug and excipient. Stability studies indicate that polymeric nanoparticles were stable at 2°C-8°C after 6 months. Raloxifene nanoparticles may be the most potent targeting moieties to treat highly invasive and metastatic MCF-7 breast cancer cells.

Abstract
The use of natural polymeric nanoparticles (Nps) as drug carriers is a highly promising area of research in the field of drug delivery systems because of their high efficiency. In this study, flurbiprofen (FB) loaded chitosan-graphene oxide (CS-GO) blend Nps were synthesized as a controlled delivery system using the emulsion method. The crystalline, molecular, and morphological structures of the prepared CS-GO Nps were characterized using a variety of analytical methods, including Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-Ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). It was found that the introduction of GO into the CS nanoparticle formulation increased its thermal stability. The range of the average particle size was between 362 ± 5.06 and 718 ± 2.21 nm, with negative zeta potential values between -7.67 ± 4.16 and - 27.93 ± 2.26 mV. The effects of the CS/GO ratio, the FB/polymer ratio, the amount of span 80, and the cross-linker concentration were assessed on FB release profiles. In vitro release studies displayed a two-stage release behaviour with a fast initial release of the FB, followed by sustained and extended release, and the incorporation of GO into the CS Nps made the FB release more sustained and controlled manner. Besides, the cytotoxicity test of the FB-loaded CS-GO Nps was studied through MTT assay, and it was found that they were biocompatible. Based on these findings, it can be inferred that the prepared CS-GO Nps might be a promising candidate drug carrier system for FB.

Abstract
Essential oils (EOs) have stability problems, including volatility, oxidation, photosensitivity, heat sensitivity, humidity sensitivity, pH sensitivity, and ion sensitivity. A drug delivery system is an effective way to stabilize EOs, especially due to the protective effect of polymeric drug carriers. Polysaccharides are frequently employed as drug carrier materials because they are highly safe, come in a variety of forms, and have plentiful sources. Interestingly, the EO drug delivery system is based on the biomimetic concept since it corresponds to the structure of plant tissue. In this paper, we associate the biomimetic plant-like structures of the EO drug delivery system with the natural forms of EO in plant tissues, and summarize the characteristics of polysaccharide-based drug carriers for EO protection. Thus, we highlight the research progress on polysaccharides and their modified materials, including gum arabic, starch, cellulose, chitosan, sodium alginate, pectin, and pullulan, and their use as biomimetic drug carriers for EO preparations due to their abilities and potential for EO protection.

Abstract
Fragrances are ubiquitously and extensively used in everyday life and several industrial applications, including perfumes, textiles, laundry formulations, hygiene household products, and food products. However, the intrinsic volatility of these small organic molecules leaves them particularly susceptible to fast depletion from a product or from the surface they have been applied to. Encapsulation is a very effective method to limit the loss of fragrance during their use and to sustain their release. This review gives an overview of the different materials and techniques used for the encapsulation of fragrances, scents, and aromas, as well as the methods used to characterize the resulting encapsulation systems, with a particular focus on cyclodextrins, polymer microcapsules, inorganic microcapsules, block copolymer micelles, and polymersomes for fragrance encapsulation, sustained release, and controlled release.

Abstract
Curcumin is a phytochemical isolated from the dried rhizome of Curcuma longa L. family Zingiberaceae which possesses versatile biological activities and has hydrophobic properties. The current study was conducted to fabricate, and optimize curcumin loaded chitosan and Sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) nanoparticles (NPs) to improve the bioavailability of curcumin. NPs were fabricated employing the Ionic gelation method. Four formulations were developed based on the selected variables like STPP and chitosan concentration, rotations per minute (rpm), temperature, and pH of chitosan solution. NPs were characterized for morphology, drug-polymer compatibility, yield, particle size, encapsulation efficiency, release behavior, anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic activity compared to curcumin and standard drug. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) shows nanoparticle compatibility. The maximum yield was 60%. Entrapment efficiency ranged from 45 to 65%. Curcumin NPs and standard drug 600 µg/ml shows 59% and 70% anti-inflammatory activity by HRB membrane stabilization method respectively which are greater than curcumin alone whereas anti-arthritic activity by protein denaturation method which is also comparable to standard drug and greater than curcumin was 66 and 70% respectively. Statistical analysis shows the mean significant difference at p ≤ 0.05. The study concluded that curcumin-loaded chitosan and STPP NPs formulated successfully by the Ionic gelation method, which increased curcumin absorption leading to a reduced dosing rate and improved patient compliance.

Abstract
Heracleum percicum essential oil (HEO) at various levels was encapsulated in chitosan nanoparticles and its potential application in yogurt was investigated. The values obtained for encapsulation efficiency, loading capacity, mean particle size, and zeta potential of nanoparticles were 39.12-70.22%, 9.14-14.26%, 201.23-336.17 nm, and + 20.19-46.37 mV, respectively. The nanoparticles had spherical shape with some holes as a result of drying process. In vitro release studies in acidic solution and phosphate buffer solution indicated an initial burst effect followed by slow release with higher release rate in acidic medium. Results of antibacterial activity revealed that Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhimurium with inhibition zones of 21.04-38.10 and 9.39-20.56 mm were the most sensitive and resistant bacteria to HEO, respectively. Incorporation of encapsulated HEO into yogurt decreased pH and increased titratable acidity due to stimulation of starters' activity. Interaction of nanoparticles with proteins decreased syneresis in yogurt. Regarding antioxidant activity, a higher value was observed in yogurt containing encapsulated HEO after 14 days of storage due to degradation and release of essential oil from nanoparticles. In conclusion, application of HEO nanoparticles in yogurt could be a promising approach for development of functional food products such as yogurt with enhanced antioxidant properties.

Abstract
The influence of ultrasonic processing parameters including reaction temperature (60, 70 and 80 °C), time (0, 15, 30, 45 and 60 min) and amplitude (70, 85 and 100%) on the formation and antioxidant activity of Maillard reaction products (MRPs) in a solution of chitosan and glucose (1.5 wt% at mass ratio of 1:1) was investigated. Selected chitosan-glucose MRPs were further studied to determine the effects of solution pH on the fabrication of antioxidative nanoparticles by ionic crosslinking with sodium tripolyphosphate. Results from FT-IR analysis, zeta-potential determination and color measurement indicated that chitosan-glucose MRPs with improved antioxidant activity were successfully produced using an ultrasound-assisted process. The highest antioxidant activity of MRPs was observed at the reaction temperature, time and amplitude of 80 °C, 60 min and 70%, respectively, with ∼ 34.5 and ∼20.2 μg Trolox mL-1 for DPPH scavenging activity and reducing power, respectively. The pH of both MRPs and tripolyphosphate solutions significantly influenced the fabrication and characteristics of the nanoparticles. Using chitosan-glucose MRPs and tripolyphosphate solution at pH 4.0 generated nanoparticles with enhanced antioxidant activity (∼1.6 and ∼ 1.2 μg Trolox mg-1 for reducing power and DPPH scavenging activity, respectively) with the highest percentage yield (∼59%), intermediate particle size (∼447 nm) and zeta-potential ∼ 19.6 mV. These results present innovative findings for the fabrication of chitosan-based nanoparticles with enhanced antioxidant activity by pre-conjugation with glucose via the Maillard reaction aided by ultrasonic processing.

Abstract
The present study investigated the comparative efficacy of garlic essential oil (GEO) and its nanoencapsulated within chitosan nanomatrix (GEO-CSNPs) as a novel preservative for the protection of stored food commodities from fungal infestations, aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) contamination and lipid peroxidation against a toxigenic strain of Aspergillus flavus. GC-MS examination of GEO showed the presence of allyl methyl tri-sulfide (23.10 %) and diallyl sulfide (19.47 %) as the major components. GEO-CSNPs were characterized through TEM micrograph, DLS, XRD, and FTIR instrumentation. During the in-vitro investigation, GEO-CSNPs at 1.0 μL/mL dose completely inhibited the growth of A. flavus while preventing the synthesis of AFB1 at 0.75 μL/mL compared to the pure GEO. The biochemical analysis reveals that A. flavus exposed to GEO-CSNPs significantly changed its ergosterol level, ions leakage, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), and antioxidant system. Additionally, GEO-CSNPs exhibited enhanced antioxidant activity against DPPH compared with GEO. Likewise, during in-situ experiments on A. hypogea GEO-CSNPs MIC and 2 MIC concentration prohibited fungal development, AFB1 synthesis, and lipid peroxidation or inflicting any negative impacts on germinating seeds. Overall, investigations concluded that GEO-CSNPs could be used as a novel preservative agent to improve the shelf life of stored food commodities.

Abstract
This study aimed to prepare sodium alginate-linalool emulsion (SA-LE) to overcome the low solubility of linalool and explore its inhibitory activity against Shigella sonnei. The results indicated that linalool significantly reduced the interfacial tension between SA and oil phase (p < 0.05). Droplet sizes of fresh emulsions were uniform with sizes from 2.54 to 2.58 μm. The ζ-potential was between -23.94 and -25.03 mV, and the viscosity distribution was 973.62 to 981.03 mPa·s at pH 5-8 (near neutral pH) without significant difference. In addition, linalool could be effectively released from SA-LE in accordance with the Peppas-Sahlin model, mainly described by Fickian diffusion. In particular, SA-LE can inhibit S. sonnei with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 3 mL/L, which was lower than free linalool. The mechanism can be described as damaging the membrane structure and inhibiting respiratory metabolism accompanied by oxidative stress based on FESEM, SDH activity, ATP and ROS content. These results suggest that SA is an effective encapsulation strategy to enhance the stability of linalool and its inhibitory effect on S. sonnei at near neutral pH. Moreover, the prepared SA-LE has the potential to be developed as a natural antibacterial agent to address the growing food safety challenges.

Abstract
Essential oils are volatile constituents that give aromatic plants their characteristic odour. The application of these plant actives in food, agriculture, pharmaceutics, and cosmetics has been widely studied. Aromatherapy, a complementary therapy involving the use of essential oils to treat several diseases ranging from microbial infections to metabolic dysfunctions, has been utilised for centuries. Anticancer, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activities are well-established among other pharmacological properties of these aromatic oils. The oils, which are composed mainly of terpene-based compounds, have also been explored as nutraceuticals, alternative green preservatives, and functional additives in foods. However, due to their physicochemical properties, viz high volatility and low aqueous solubility, essential oil delivery to target receptors were challenging when administered as chemotherapeutics. Hence, formulating essential oils with suitable excipients to enhance their delivery and bioavailability, invariably improving their bioactivity and therapeutic efficacy becomes expedient. Nanotechnology presents a unique strategy to develop a particulate delivery system for the controlled, sustained, and extended release of essential oils. In this review, we examine and summarize the trends and developments in the formulation of essential oils using polymeric nanoparticles.

Abstract
To fabricate multifunctional nanoparticles (NPs) based on chitosan (CS) derivative, we first prepared quaternized CS (2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride CS, HTCC) via a one-step approach, then synthesized p-coumaric acid (p-CA) modified HTCC (HTCC-CA) for the first time through amide reaction, and finally fabricated a series of NPs (HTCC-CA NPs) using HTCC-CAs with different substitution degrees and sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) by ionic gelation. Newly-prepared HTCC and HTCC-CAs were characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR, elemental analysis (EA), full-wavelength UV scanning, silver nitrate titration, and Folin-Ciocalteu methods. DLS and TEM results demonstrated that three selected HTCC-CA NPs had moderate size (< 350 nm), good dispersion (PDI < 0.4), and positive zeta potential (11-20 mV). The HTCC-CA NPs had high antibacterial activity against six bacterial strains, and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values were almost the same as the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values (250-1000 μg/mL). Also, the HTCC-CA NPs had good antioxidation (radical scavenging ratio > 65 %) and low cytotoxicity (relative cell viability >80 %) to the tested cells. Totally, HTCC-CA NPs with high antibacterial activity, great antioxidation, and low cytotoxicity might serve as new biomedical materials for promoting skin wound healing.

Abstract
Geranium essential oil (GEO) has been widely used in aromatherapy and traditional medicines. Nanoencapsulation, a novel technique has emerged to overcome the environmental degradation and less oral bioavailability of essential oils. This work was undertaken to encapsulate geranium essential oil in chitosan nanoparticles (GEO-CNPs) by ionic gelation technique and to explore anti-arthritic and anti-inflammatory potential in FCA-induced arthritic model in rats. The GEO was characterized by gas chromatography flame ionization detector (GCFID) and the nanosuspension was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-rays diffraction (XRD). The Wistar albino rats (n = 32) were separated into four groups; Group 1 and 2 were considered as normal and arthritic controls. Group 3 was positive control that received oral celecoxib for 21 days while Group 4 was treated with oral GEO-CNPs after the induction of arthritis. Hind paw ankle joints diameters were weekly measured throughout the study and significant decrease (5.5 ± 0.5 mm) was observed in GEO-CNPs treatment group in comparison to arthritic group (9.17 ± 0.52 mm). Blood samples were drawn at end for evaluation of hematological, biochemical and inflammatory biomarkers. A significant upregulation of red blood cells and hemoglobin while downregulation of white blood cells, interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), C-reactive protein (CRP) and rheumatoid factor (RF) was observed. Ankles were transected for the histopathological and radiographic examination after animals were sacrificed which confirmed the alleviation of necrosis along cellular infiltration. It was concluded that GEO-CNPs were found to possess excellent therapeutic potential and promising candidates to reduce FCA-induced arthritis.

Abstract
Nanotechnology advances are rapidly spreading through the food science field; however, their major application has been focused on the development of novel packaging materials reinforced with nanoparticles. Bionanocomposites are formed with a bio-based polymeric material incorporated with components at a nanoscale size. These bionanocomposites can also be applied to preparing an encapsulation system aimed at the controlled release of active compounds, which is more related to the development of novel ingredients in the food science and technology field. The fast development of this knowledge is driven by consumer demand for more natural and environmentally friendly products, which explains the preference for biodegradable materials and additives obtained from natural sources. In this review, the latest developments of bionanocomposites for food processing (encapsulation technology) and food packaging applications are gathered.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chitosan (CS) and tripolyphosphate (TPP) can be combined in the development of a material with synergistic properties and promising potential for the conservation of food products. In this study, ellagic acid (EA) and anti-inflammatory peptide (FPL)-loaded CS nanoparticles (FPL/EA NPs) were prepared using the ionic gelation method and optimal preparation conditions were obtained through a single factor design. RESULTS The synthesized nanoparticles (NPs) were characterized using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Nanoparticles were spherical, with an average size of 308.33 ± 4.61 nm, a polydispersity index (PDI) of 0.254, a zeta potential of +31.7 ± 0.08 mV, and a high encapsulation capacity (22.16 ± 0.79%). An in vitro release study showed that EA/FPL had a sustainable release from FPL/EA NPs. The stability of the FPL/EA NPs was evaluated for 90 days at 0, 25, and 37 °C. Significant anti-inflammatory activity of FPL/EA NPs was verified by nitric oxide (NO) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) reduction. CONCLUSION These characteristics support the use of CS nanoparticles to encapsulate EA and FPL and improve their bioactivity in food products. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The application of plant essential oil liposomes to prevent and control food safety risks caused by Campylobacter jejuni (C. jejuni) still faces challenges such as lack of targeting and low release rate. Here, a bacteria-targeted and protease-activated antibacterial liposome (ACCLPs) was successfully synthesized through encapsulation of clove essential oil (CEO) by film dispersion method, embedding of casein by freeze-thaw method, and conjugation of C. jejuni antibody on the liposome membrane by post-insertion method. The average particle size, the essential oil encapsulation rate, the casein mosaic rate, and the antibody coupling efficiency of ACCLPs were determined as185.87 nm,16.9%,70.1% and 87.5%, respectively. The modification with C. jejuni antibody could significantly improve the targeting of ACCLPs to C. jejuni. Controlled release experiments showed that the exocrine protease from C. jejuni could hydrolyze the embedded casein and perforation on the ACCLPs, thus leading to a bacteria-dependent CEO release and significant prolonging the antibacterial effects of ACCLPs. Application results of ACCLPs on C. jejuni-contaminated foods showed that ACCLPs could effectively inhibit C. jejuni in a variety of meat products, fruits and vegetables and extend their shelf life without significantly affecting food quality. The results above in this work would provide a new view for the development of high efficient liposome-based antibacterial system of plant essential oil.

Abstract
Owing to volatility and poor water solubility, the medical application of Chimonanthus nitens Oliv. essential oil (CEO) in the fields of medicine was strictly limited. To tackle this problem, a novel CEO loaded rambutan-liked Pickering emulsion (CEO-RPE) with a spiky surface was effectively designed by coating with carboxymethyl cellulose sodium modified cellulose nanocrystals (CCN) as stabilizer. The effect of CCN concentration on the formation and stabilization of CEO-RPE was investigated. The results showed that CEO-RPE stabilized by 1 % CCN had a smaller droplet size and exhibited a rambutan-liked surface, and was stabilized against concentrated salt and high pH condition due to the steric barrier of CCN that covered in the droplet surface. Subsequently, the antibacterial performance of CEO-RPE was investigated against E. coli, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, and S. pneumoniae by determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The results showed that the CEO-RPE exhibited higher antibacterial activity compared to CEO, which could be attributed to its effective adhesion to the cell membrane of bacteria. In addition, the results of anti-inflammatory experiments showed that CEO-RPE also exhibited strong anti-inflammatory effect on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute lung injury (ALI) in rats. Therefore, the CCN stabilized rambutan-liked Pickering emulsion seemed to be a promising strategy to increase the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity of CEO.

Abstract
The physical and chemical properties of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were regulated by physical crosslinking with chitosan particles (CSp). At a fixed concentration (0.5 wt%) of CNC, varying CSp concentration (0.02-0.5 wt%) influenced the morphologies and chemical properties of the obtained complex particles (CNC-CSp). The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and zeta potential confirmed the electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions between CSp and CNC. At a low CSp concentration (0.02-0.05 wt%), the charge shielding effect induced the formation of particle aggregation networks, thus showing increased viscosity, turbidity and size (153.4-2605.7 nm). At a higher CSp concentration (0.1-0.5 wt%), the hydrogen bonding interaction promoted CSp adsorption onto the surface of CNC, thus facilitating the dispersion of CNC-CSp due to electrostatic repulsion caused by surface-adsorbed CSp. In addition, CSp improved the thermal stability, hydrophobicity (41.87-60.02°) and rheological properties of CNC. Compared with CNC, CNC-CSp displayed a better emulsifying ability and emulsion stability, in which CSp could play a dual role (i.e., charge regulator and stabilizer). This study suggests that introducing CSp can improve the properties and application potentials of CNC as food colloids.

Abstract
Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), a potent natural group 1 carcinogen produced by Aspergillus flavus is considered an unavoidable toxic contaminant of herbal raw materials, which often deteriorates their active ingredients making them less effective and hazardous during their formulation in herbal drugs. The present investigation reports the antifungal (0.5 μl/ml) and AFB1 inhibitory (0.4 μl/ml) effects of the developed formulation CIM based on a mixture of essential oils (Carum carvi, and Illicium verum), and methyl anthranilate using mathematical modeling. The insight into the mechanism of action has also been explored using biochemical, molecular docking, and RT-PCR. Further, the nanoencapsulation of CIM (Ne-CIM) was prepared using a green facile synthesis of chitosan-based nanomatrix and characterized by Dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier transform-infrared, (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The in-situ results showed that at MIC doses Ne-CIM effectively controls the A. flavus (81.25-89.57 %), AFB1 contamination (100 %), and protects the active ingredients deterioration of Piper nigrum, P. longum, Andrographis paniculata, Silybum marianum, and Withania somnifera caused by toxigenic species of A. flavus without affecting their sensory properties. Hence, Ne-CIM could be used as a green chemical agent to protect the biodeterioration of active ingredients of herbal raw materials caused by toxigenic species of A. flavus.

Abstract
Natural isoflavonoids have attracted much attention in the treatment of oral bacterial infections and other diseases due to their excellent antibacterial activity and safety. However, their poor water solubility, instability and low bioavailability seriously limited the practical application. In this study, licoricidin-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (LC-CSNPs) were synthesized by self-assembly for improving the dispersion of licoricidin (LC) and strengthening antibacterial and anti-biofilm performance. Compared to free LC, the minimum inhibitory concentration of LC-CSNPs against Streptococcus mutans decreased >2-fold to 26 μg/mL, and LC-CSNPs could ablate 70 % biofilms at this concentration. The enhanced antibacterial activity was mainly attributed to the spontaneous surface adsorption of LC-CSNPs on cell membranes through electrostatic interactions. More valuably, LC-CSNPs had no inhibitory effect on the growth of probiotic. Mechanism study indicated that LC-CSNPs altered the transmembrane potential to cause bacterial cells in a hyperpolarized state, generating ROS to cause cells damage and eventually apoptosis. This work demonstrated that the chitosan-based nanoparticles have great potential in enhancing the dispersibility and antibacterial activity of insoluble isoflavonoids, offering a promising therapeutic strategy for oral infections.

Abstract
The essential oil obtained by steam-distillation from Ferulago angulata (FA) was stabilized by ionic-gelation technique within chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs). The aim of this study was to investigate different properties of CSNPs loaded with FA essential oil (FAEO). GC-MS analysis detected the major components of FAEO as α-pinene (21.85 %), β-ocimene (19.37 %), bornyl acetate (10.50 %) and thymol (6.80 %). Due to presence of these components, FAEO showed stronger antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli with MIC values of 0.45 and 2.12 mg/mL, respectively. Chitosan to FAEO ratio of 1: 1.25 exhibited a maximum encapsulation efficiency (60.20 %) and loading capacity (24.5 %) values. By increasing loading ratio from 1:0 to 1:1.25, mean particle size and polydispersity index were significantly (P < 0.05) increased from 175 to 350 nm and 0.184 to 0.32, respectively, while zeta potential was decreased from +43.5 to +19.2 mV, indicating the physical instability of CSNPs at higher FAEO loading concentrations. SEM observation proved successful formation of spherical CSNPs during the nanoencapsulation of EO. FTIR spectroscopy indicated successful physical entrapment of EO within CSNPs. Differential scanning calorimetry also proved the physical entrapment of FAEO into polymeric matrix of chitosan. XRD exhibited a broad peak at 2θ = 19° - 25° in loaded-CSNPs as indication of successful entrapment of FAEO within CSNPs. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that encapsulated essential oil was decomposed at higher temperature than its free from, indicating the success of encapsulation technique in stabilizing FAEO within CSNPs.

Abstract
In this study, antibacterial and antioxidant molecules-rich Melaleuca alternifolia oil (tea tree oil (TTO)) loaded chitosan (CS) based nanoemulsions (NEMs) were prepared and encapsulated by sodium alginate (SA) microsphere for antibacterial wound dressing. CS-TTO NEMs were prepared by oil-in-water emulsion technique, and the nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA) confirmed that the CS-TTO NEMs had an average particle size of 89.5 nm. Further, the SA-CS-TTO microsphere was confirmed through SEM analysis with an average particle size of 0.76 ± 0.10 µm. The existence of TTO in CS NEMs and SA encapsulation was evidenced through FTIR analysis. The XRD spectrum proved the load of TTO and SA encapsulation with CS significantly decreased the crystalline properties of the CS-TTO and SA-CS-TTO microsphere. The stability of TTO was increased by the copolymer complex, as confirmed through thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Furthermore, TTO was released from the CS-SA complex in a sustained manner and significantly inhibited the bacterial pathogens observed under confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). In addition, CS-TTO (100 µg/mL) showed antioxidant potential (>80%), thereby increasing the DPPH and ABTS free radicals scavenging ability of SA-CS-TTO microspheres. Moreover, CS and SA-CS-TTO microsphere exhibited negligible cytotoxicity and augmented the NIH3T3 cell proliferation confirmed in the in vitro scratch assay. This study concluded that the SA-CS-TTO microsphere could be an antibacterial and antioxidant wound dressing.

Abstract
This work presents the fabrication and characterization of a hybrid nanostructure, Ziziphora clinopodioides essential oils (ZEO)-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs-ZEO) embedded into cellulose acetate (CA) nanofibers (CA-CSNPs-ZEO). The CSNPs-ZEO were first synthesized through the ionic gelation method. Then, through simultaneous electrospraying and electrospinning processes, the nanoparticles were embedded in the CA nanofibers. The morphological and physicochemical characteristics of the prepared nanostructures were evaluated using different methods, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), water vapor permeability (WVP), moisture content (MC), mechanical testing, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and release profile studies. The antibacterial activity of the nanostructures was explored on raw beef as a food model during 12 days of storage at 4 °C. The obtained results indicated the successful synthesis of CSNPs-ZEO nanoparticles with an average size of 267 ± 6 nm and their incorporation into the nanofibers matrix. Moreover, the CA-CSNPs-ZEO nanostructure showed a lower water vapor barrier and higher tensile strength compared with ZEO-loaded CA (CA-ZEO) nanofiber. The CA-CSNPs-ZEO nanostructure also exhibited strong antibacterial activity, which effectively extended the shelf-life of raw beef. The results demonstrated a strong potential for innovative hybrid nanostructures in active packaging to maintain the quality of perishable food products.

Abstract
Persistent bacterial infection caused by biofilms is one of the most serious problems that threatened human health. The development of antibacterial agents remains a challenge to penetrate biofilm and effectively treat the underlying bacterial infection. In the current study, chitosan-based nanogels were developed for encapsulating the Tanshinone IIA (TA) to enhance the antibacterial and anti-biofilm efficacy against Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans). The as-prepared nanogels (TA@CS) displayed excellent encapsulation efficiency (91.41 ± 0.11 %), uniform particle sizes (393.97 ± 13.92 nm), and enhanced positive potential (42.27 ± 1.25 mV). After being coated with CS, the stability of TA under light and other harsh environments was greatly improved. In addition, TA@CS displayed pH responsiveness, allowing it to selectively release more TA in acidic conditions. Furthermore, the positively charged TA@CS were equipped to target negatively charged biofilm surfaces and efficiently penetrate through biofilm barriers, making it promising for remarkable anti-biofilm activity. More importantly, when TA was encapsulated into CS nanogels, the antibacterial activity of TA was enhanced at least 4-fold. Meanwhile, TA@CS inhibited 72 % of biofilm formation at 500 μg/mL. The results demonstrated that the nanogels constituted CS and TA had antibacterial/anti-biofilm properties with synergistic enhanced effects, which will benefit pharmaceutical, food, and other fields.

Abstract
The present study investigated the protective efficacy of dietary supplementation with clove essential oil (CEO), its main constituent eugenol (EUG), and their nanoformulated emulsions (Nano-CEO and Nano-EUG) against experimental coccidiosis in broiler chickens. To this aim, various parameters (oocyst number per gram of excreta (OPG), daily weight gain (DWG), daily feed intake (DFI), feed conversion ratio (FCR), serum concentrations of total proteins (TP), albumin (ALB), globulins (GLB), triglycerides (TG), cholesterol (CHO) and glucose (GLU), serum activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione s-transferase (GST), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx)] were compared among groups receiving CEO supplemented feed (CEO), Nano-CEO supplemented feed (Nano-CEO), EUG supplemented feed (EUG), Nano-EUG supplemented feed (Nano-EUG), diclazuril supplemented feed (standard treatment, ST), or basal diet [diseased control (d-CON) and healthy control (h-CON)), from days 1-42. Chickens of all groups, except h-CON, were challenged with mixed Eimeria spp. at 14 days of age. Coccidiosis development in d-CON was associated with impaired productivity (lower DWG and higher DFI and FCR relative to h-CON; p < 0.05) and altered serum biochemistry (decreased TP, ALB, and GLB concentrations and SOD, GST, and GPx activities relative to h-CON; p < 0.05). ST effectively controlled coccidiosis infection by significantly decreasing OPG values compared with d-CON (p < 0.05) and maintaining zootechnical and serum biochemical parameters at levels close to (DWG, FCR; p < 0.05) or not different from (DFI, TP, ALB, GLB, SOD, GST, and GPx) those of h-CON. Among the phytogenic supplemented (PS) groups, all showed decreased OPG values compared with d-CON (p < 0.05), with the lowest value being measured in Nano-EUG. All PS groups showed better values of DFI and FCR than d-CON (p < 0.05), but only in Nano-EUG were these parameters, along with DWG, not different from those of ST. Furthermore, Nano-EUG was the only PS group having all serum biochemical values not different (or even slightly improved) relative to ST and h-CON. In conclusion, the tested PS diets, especially Nano-EUG, can limit the deleterious effects of coccidiosis in broiler chickens, due to anticoccidial activity and possibly their reported antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, thereby representing a potential green alternative to synthetic anticoccidials.

Abstract
In the last few decades, several natural bioactive agents have been widely utilized in the treatment and prevention of many diseases owing to their unique and versatile therapeutic effects, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and neuroprotective action. However, their poor aqueous solubility, poor bioavailability, low GIT stability, extensive metabolism as well as short duration of action are the most shortfalls hampering their biomedical/pharmaceutical applications. Different drug delivery platforms have developed in this regard, and a captivating tool of this has been the fabrication of nanocarriers. In particular, polymeric nanoparticles were reported to offer proficient delivery of various natural bioactive agents with good entrapment potential and stability, an efficiently controlled release, improved bioavailability, and fascinating therapeutic efficacy. In addition, surface decoration and polymer functionalization have opened the door to improving the characteristics of polymeric nanoparticles and alleviating the reported toxicity. Herein, a review of the state of knowledge on polymeric nanoparticles loaded with natural bioactive agents is presented. The review focuses on frequently used polymeric materials and their corresponding methods of fabrication, the needs of such systems for natural bioactive agents, polymeric nanoparticles loaded with natural bioactive agents in the literature, and the potential role of polymer functionalization, hybrid systems, and stimuli-responsive systems in overcoming most of the system drawbacks. This exploration may offer a thorough idea of viewing the polymeric nanoparticles as a potential candidate for the delivery of natural bioactive agents as well as the challenges and the combating tools used to overcome any hurdles.

Abstract
Biopolymeric nanoparticles are gaining importance as nanocarriers for various biomedical applications, enabling long-term and controlled release at the target site. Since they are promising delivery systems for various therapeutic agents and offer advantageous properties such as biodegradability, biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and stability compared to various toxic metal nanoparticles, we decided to provide an overview on this topic. Therefore, the review focuses on the use of biopolymeric nanoparticles of animal, plant, algal, fungal, and bacterial origin as a sustainable material for potential use as drug delivery systems. A particular focus is on the encapsulation of many different therapeutic agents categorized as bioactive compounds, drugs, antibiotics, and other antimicrobial agents, extracts, and essential oils into protein- and polysaccharide-based nanocarriers. These show promising benefits for human health, especially for successful antimicrobial and anticancer activity. The review article, divided into protein-based and polysaccharide-based biopolymeric nanoparticles and further according to the origin of the biopolymer, enables the reader to select the appropriate biopolymeric nanoparticles more easily for the incorporation of the desired component. The latest research results from the last five years in the field of the successful production of biopolymeric nanoparticles loaded with various therapeutic agents for healthcare applications are included in this review.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ultrasound can increase the mass transfer between preservatives and food, and enhances the effect of preservatives on food. Chitosan-grafted-chlorogenic acid (CS-g-CA) is a new synthetic compound with good antiseptic properties. Therefore, the present study evaluated the preservation performance of ultrasound-assisted CS-g-CA (GUA) coatings on refrigerated sea bass fillets in terms of changes in microorganisms, lipids, proteins, tissue structures, and moisture. RESULTS The results showed that GUA treatment effectively inhibited the growth of microorganisms in sea bass fillets. Meanwhile, the changes in total volatile basal nitrogen, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, and pH values were all slowed down under GUA treatment, indicating that protein degradation and lipid oxidation in sea bass were inhibited. Low-field nuclear magnetic resonance and magnetic resonance imaging results indicated that the GUA retarded the conversion of mobile water to free water. In addition, GUA treatment maintained the flavor quality of fish fillets, and also inhibited the reduction of inosine monophosphate and the production of bitter substances (inosine and hypoxanthine), suppressed muscle tissue degeneration, and maintained better sensory scores. CONCLUSION Overall, GUA treatment inhibited microbial growth, protein degradation, lipid oxidation, moisture migration, decomposition of umami substances, and deterioration of sensory quality in sea bass fillets. Finally, the shelf-life of sea bass fillets with GUA treatment was extended by an additional 9 days. The results showed that ultrasonic assistance further enhanced the effect of preservatives on aquatic products. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Clove oil (CO) is a powerful antioxidant essential oil (EO) with anti-inflammatory, anesthetic, and anti-infective properties. It can be therefore considered a good candidate for wound-healing applications, especially for chronic or diabetic wounds or burns, where the balance of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and detoxification is altered. However, EOs require suitable formulations to be efficiently administered in moist wound environments. Chitosan hydrophobically modified by an ionic interaction with oleic acid (chitosan oleate, CSO) was used in the present work to stabilize CO nanoemulsions (NEs). The dimensions of the NE were maintained at around 300 nm as the volume distribution for up to six months, and the CO content did not decrease to under 80% over 4 months, confirming the good stabilizing properties of CSO. The antioxidant properties of the CO NE were evaluated in vitro by a 2,2-diphenil-2-picrylhydrazyl hydrate (DPPH) assay, and in fibroblast cell lines by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) using α-phenyl-N-tert-butyl nitrone (PBN) as a spin trap; a protective effect was obtained comparable to that obtained with α-tocopherol treatment. In a murine burn model, the ability of CO formulations to favor macroscopic wound closure was evidenced, and a histological analysis revealed a positive effect of the CO NE on the reparation of the lesion after 18 days. Samples of wounds at 7 days were subjected to a histological analysis and parallel dosage of lipid peroxidation by means of a thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) assay, confirming the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of the CO NE.

Abstract
In this work, we synthesized chitosan 5 kDa conjugates with β-cyclodextrins with various substituents as promising mucoadhesive carriers for the delivery of fluoroquinolones using the example of levofloxacin. The obtained conjugates were comprehensively characterized by spectral methods (UV-Vis, ATR-FTIR, 1H NMR, SEM). The physico-chemical properties of the complex formations were studied by IR, UV, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The dissociation constants of complexes with levofloxacin were determined. Complexation with conjugates provided four times slower drug release in comparison with plain CD and more than 20 times in comparison with the free drug. The antibacterial activity of the complexes was tested on model microorganisms Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Gram-positive Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633. The complex with the conjugate demonstrated the same initial levofloxacin antibacterial activity but provided significant benefits, e.g., prolonged release.

Abstract
This study elucidated the chemical composition of essential oil from Centipeda minima (EOCM) and its antibacterial and antioxidant activities with two chemical monomers thymol and carvacrol. The main chemical composition of EOCM, analyzed by GC-MS, were trans-chrysanthenyl acetate, thymol, aromadendrene and β-caryophyllene. In the screening of antibacterial activity against S. aureus, two monomers with antibacterial activity were obtained: thymol and carvacrol. The MIC of EOCM, thymol and carvacrol were 0.625 mg/mL, 0.156 mg/mL and 0.156 mg/mL, respectively. The experimental results were shown that three drugs could inhibit the growth of S. aureus and inhibit the formation of biofilm by changing the permeability of cell membrane and interfering with the metabolic activities in bacteria. The scavenging effects of the three drugs on DPPH radical and hydroxyl radical showed that the antioxidant effect of the three drugs was EOCM > carvacrol > thymol.

Abstract
Chitosan is the deacetylated form of chitin regarded as one of the most abundant polymers and due to its properties, both chitosan alone or in combination with bioactive substances for the production of biodegradable films and coatings is gaining attention in terms of applications in the food industry. To enhance the antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of chitosan, a vast variety of plant extracts have been incorporated to meet consumer demands for more environmentally friendly and synthetic preservative-free foods. This review provides knowledge about the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of chitosan films and coatings enriched with natural extracts as well as their applications in various food products and the effects they had on them. In a nutshell, it has been demonstrated that chitosan can act as a coating or packaging material with excellent antimicrobial and antioxidant properties in addition to its biodegradability, biocompatibility, and non-toxicity. However, further research should be carried out to widen the applications of bioactive chitosan coatings to more foods and industries as well was their industrial scale-up, thus helping to minimize the use of plastic materials.

Abstract
Essential oils (EOs) are complex mixtures of volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds that originate from different plant tissues, including flowers, buds, leaves and bark. According to their chemical composition, EOs have a characteristic aroma and present a wide spectrum of applications, namely in the food, agricultural, environmental, cosmetic and pharmaceutical sectors. These applications are mainly due to their biological properties. However, EOs are unstable and easily degradable if not protected from external factors such as oxidation, heat and light. Therefore, there is growing interest in the encapsulation of EOs, since polymeric nanocarriers serve as a barrier between the oil and the environment. In this context, nanoencapsulation seems to be an interesting approach as it not only prevents the exposure and degradation of EOs and their bioactive constituents by creating a physical barrier, but it also facilitates their controlled release, thus resulting in greater bioavailability and efficiency. In this review, we focused on selecting recent articles whose objective concerned the nanoencapsulation of essential oils from different plant species and highlighted their chemical constituents and their potential biotechnological applications. We also present the fundamentals of the most commonly used encapsulation methods, and the biopolymer carriers that are suitable for encapsulating EOs.

Abstract
Fruits are highly susceptible to postharvest losses induced majorly by postharvest diseases. Peach are favored by consumers because of their high nutritional value and delicious taste. However, it was easy to be affected by fungal infection. The current effective method to control postharvest diseases of fruits is to use chemical fungicides, but these chemicals may cause adverse effects on human health and the residual was potentially harmful to nature and the environment. So, it is especially important to develop safe, non-toxic, and highly effective strategies for the preservation of the fruits. Essential oil, as a class of the natural bacterial inhibitor, has been proven to exhibit strong antibacterial activity, low toxicity, environmental friendliness, and induce fruit resistance to microorganism, which could be recognized as one of the alternatives to chemical fungicides. This paper reviews the research progress of essential oils (Eos) in the storage and preservation of fruits, especially the application in peach, as well as the application in active packaging such as edible coatings, microcapsules, and electrospinning loading. Electrospinning can prepare a variety of nanofibers from different viscoelastic polymer solutions, and has broad application prospects. The paper especially summarizes the application of the new Eos technology on peach. The essential oil with thymol, eugenol, and carvacrol as the main components has a better inhibitory effect on the postharvest disease of peaches, and can be further applied. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: As an environmentally friendly natural antibacterial agent, essential oil can be used as a substitute for chemical preservatives to keep fruits fresh. This paper summarizes the different preservation methods of essential oils for fruits, and especially summarizes the different preservation methods of essential oils for peaches after harvesting, as well as their inhibitory effects on pathogenic fungi. It could provide ideas for preservation of fruits and vegetables by essential oils.
