The influence of humic and fulvic acids on polytetrafluoroethylene-adsorbed arsenic: a mechanistic study

The large-scale use of polytetrafluoroethylene has resulted in ever-increasing amounts of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) microplastic particles entering the environment. Given that the environment is polluted with arsenic (As(III)), and that the environment contains significant levels of humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA), how PTFE and As(III) in water interacting in the presence of HA and FA needs to be urgently investigated. The results showed that As(III) was adsorbed by PTFE in the presence of HA and FA more markedly than the absence of them Adsorption equilibrium was reached at approximately 960 min and the adsorption isotherms were found to be best fitted by the Toth model. An increase in temperature was found to destroy hydrogen bonds, resulting in inhibited, non-spontaneous adsorption; a higher pH inhibited adsorption in the range 3-7. Computational and mechanistic studies revealed that PTFE formed π complexes with HA units, which increased the number of oxygen-containing functional groups on its surface. The surface of the PTFE-HA π complex was mostly negatively charged; however, the hydrogen atoms of the hydroxyl and carboxylic acid groups exhibited large positive potentials that enabled the adsorption of As(III). When the oxygen atom on As was close to the oxygen-containing functional group on PTFE-HA, the more electronegative oxygen atom forms a special intermolecular interaction in the form of O-H···O through the medium of hydrogen, which makes As adsorb on the surface of PTFE. Pore filling, hydrogen bonding, and covalent bonding are the main ways in which PTFE adsorbs As(III) in the presence of HA and FA. PTFE also adsorbed more As(III) in the presence of HA than in the presence of FA.

Microplastics (MPs) Act as Sources and Vector of Pollutants-Impact Hazards and Preventive Measures

Currently, people are paying more and more attention to the interaction between microplastics (MPs) and chemical substances (including metals and organic substances), so it is necessary to understand the relationship between MPs and chemical substances. In this review, we explored (1) MPs may become a source of chemical substances. (2) MPs can also be used as a carrier for attaching pollutants. (3) No matter what role MPs play, MPs and the attached chemical substances will have harmful effects on biological systems. However, because the current research is not deep enough, more experimental areas are needed to explore the interaction mechanism and the principle of toxicity. In addition, laws and policies need to be developed that actively promote and strive to develop biodegradable alternative microplastics to reduce the harm of microplastics and their additives to the environment.

Trimethylamine functionalized radiation-induced grafted polyamide 6 fibers for p-nitrophenol adsorption

The method of pre-irradiation grafting was used with the aid of electron beam (EB) accelerator to accomplish the grafting of polyamide 6 fibers (PA6) with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA). The extent to which GMA was grafted on PA6 was found to be markedly influenced by the absorbed dose of radiation and the reaction time of grafting. Trimethylamine (TMA) was afterwards employed for the functionalization of GMA-grafted fibers (PA6-g-GMA). A range of analyses (e.g., FTIR, FESEM, XRD, BET, and pHpzc) were carried out to determine the physiochemical and morphological properties of the fibrous adsorbent. p-Nitrophenol (PNP) adsorption from aqueous solution was conducted with the resulting TMA-(PA6-g-GMA) adsorbent. The adsorption behaviour of PNP on the fibrous adsorbent was clarified by investigating the adsorption kinetics and isotherm. According to the results, the adsorption of PNP on TMA-(PA6-g-GMA) reflected the pseudo-second order model. Meanwhile, the isotherm analysis revealed that the best description of the equilibrium data was provided by Redlich-Peterson model, followed closely by Langmuir isotherm model. The achieved adsorption capacity was highest at 176.036 mg/g. Moreover, the adsorption was indicated by the thermodynamic analysis to be spontaneous and exothermic. Regeneration and recycling of the adsorbent was possible for a minimum of five cycles with no reduction in adsorption capacity. It was concluded that the fibrous adsorbent could have applications for the removal of PNP at industrial pilot scale.

Effects of nano- or microplastic exposure combined with arsenic on soil bacterial, fungal, and protistan communities

The soil protistan community makes important contributions to the ecological functions of soil. However, our knowledge of the effects of pollutants, especially plastic particles, on the soil protistan community is still very limited compared to our knowledge on other soil microbes, such as bacterial and fungi. In this study, we revealed the effects of combined and single pollution caused by arsenic (As) and microplastics/nanoplastics (MPs/NPs) on bacterial, fungal and protistan communities. Our results revealed that combined pollution through As and MPs/NPs distinctly affected the composition and structure of the soil protistan communities (P < 0.05), but in the case of bacteria, only some families were altered, and there was no impact on fungi. Changes of soil protistan communities might be mainly due to As pollution, and MPs/NPs exposure increased this detrimental effect. Further, As + MPs exposure greatly increased the abundance of soil protistan parasites, and As + NPs exposure caused an evident decrease in the abundance of soil protistan consumers (P < 0.05). These findings indicate that combined pollution by As and MPs/NPs can affect the ecological functions of soil by altering soil protistan communities. These results will help enhance our understanding of the impact of plastic particles on soil ecosystems.

Sorption of tetracycline onto hexabromocyclododecane/polystyrene composite and polystyrene microplastics: Statistical physics models, influencing factors, and interaction mechanisms

Microplastics (MPs) are becoming a major concern due to their great potential to sorb and transport pollutants in the aquatic environment; hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) is a common chemical additive in polystyrene (PS) MPs. However, the underlying mechanisms for the interaction of tetracycline (TC) onto HBCD-PS composites MPs (HBCD-PS MPs) are still not well documented. Our findings showed that the addition of HBCD resulted in a relatively higher hydrophobicity of PS MPs, and significantly enhanced the sorption ability of HBCD-PS MPs for TC. The kinetic models suggested that the sorption of TC onto PS and HBCD-PS MPs were mainly controlled by film diffusion and intra-particle diffusion, respectively. The statistical physics models were used to elucidate the sorption of TC onto PS and HBCD-PS MPs was associated with the formation of the monolayer, and the results indicated the TC was sorbed onto the two MPs by both multi-molecular and non-parallel processes. The TC sorption was solution pH-dependent while the effect of NaCl content on TC sorption was negligible. The presence of Cu(Ⅱ), Pb(Ⅱ), Cd(Ⅱ), and Zn(Ⅱ) ions had different influences on the TC sorption onto both the MPs. Overall, various mechanisms including π-π and hydrophobic interactions jointly regulated the sorption of TC onto both the MPs. Our results provided new insights into the sorption behavior and interaction mechanisms of TC onto both the MPs and highlighted that the addition of HBCD likely increased the enrichment capacity of MPs for pollutants in the environment.

Preparation and Characterization of Phosphoric Acid-Modified Biochar Nanomaterials with Highly Efficient Adsorption and Photodegradation Ability

Phosphoric acid-modified biochar (PMBC) was prepared using biochar (BC) as the carbon source and phosphoric acid as the activating agent. The PMBC exhibited an ordered vessel structure after deashing treatment, but the sidewalls became much rougher, the polarity (O/C atomic ratio of BC = 0.2320 and O/C atomic ratio of PMBC = 0.1604) decreased, and the isoelectric points (PI of BC = 5.22 and PI of PMBC = 5.51) and specific surface area (SSA of BC = 55.322 m²/g and SSA of PMBC = 62.285 m²/g) increased. The adsorption characterization of the removal of sulfadiazine (SDZ) from PMBC was studied. The adsorption of SDZ by PMBC was in accordance with the Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetics model, and the adsorption thermodynamics were shown as Gibbs free energy < 0, an enthalpy change of 19.157 kJ/mol, and an entropy change of 0.0718 kJ/(K·mol). The adsorption of SDZ by PMBC was a complicated monolayer adsorption that was spontaneous, irreversible, and endothermic, and physical adsorption and chemical adsorption occurred simultaneously. The adsorption process was controlled by microporous capture, electrostatic interactions, hydrogen-bond interactions, and π-π interactions. PMBC@TiO₂ photocatalysts with different mass ratios between TiO₂ and PMBC were prepared via the in situ sol-gel method. PMBC@TiO₂ exhibited both an ordered vessel structure (PMBC) and irregular particles (TiO₂), and it was linked via Ti-O-C bonds. The optimal mass ratio between TiO₂ and PMBC was 3:1. The removal of SDZ via PMBC@TiO₂ was dependent on the coupling of adsorption and photocatalysis. The PMBC-enhanced photocatalytic performance of PMBC@TiO₂ resulted in a higher absorption of UV and visible light, greater generation of reactive oxygen species, high levels of adsorption of SDZ on PMBC, and the conjugated structure and oxygen-containing functional groups that promoted the separation efficiency of the hole-electron pairs.

Engineered Polystyrene-Based Microplastics of High Environmental Relevance

Microplastic (MP) pollution-an emerging environmental challenge of the 21st century-refers to accumulation of environmentally weathered polymer-based particles with potential environmental and health risks. Because of technical and practical challenges when using environmental MPs for risk assessment, most available data are generated using plastic models of limited environmental relevancy (i.e., with physicochemical characteristics inherently different from those of environmental MPs). In this study, we assess the effect of dominant weathering conditions-including thermal, photo-, and mechanical degradation-on surface and bulk characteristics of polystyrene (PS)-based single-use products. Further, we augment the environmental relevance of model-enabled risk assessment through the design of engineered MPs. A set of optimized laboratory-based weathering conditions demonstrated a synergetic effect on the PS-based plastic, which was fragmented into millions of 1-3 μm MP particles in under 16 h. The physicochemical properties of these engineered MPs were compared to those of their environmental counterpart and PS microbeads often used as MP models. The engineered MPs exhibit high environmental relevance with rough and oxidized surfaces and a heterogeneous fragmented morphology. Our results suggest that this top-down synthesis protocol combining major weathering mechanisms can fabricate improved, realistic, and reproducible PS-based plastic models with high levels of control over the particles' properties. Through increased environmental relevancy, our plastic model bolsters the field of risk assessment, enabling more reliable estimations of risk associated with an emerging pollutant of global concern.

Adsorption of fulvic acid onto polyamide 6 microplastics: Influencing factors, kinetics modeling, site energy distribution and interaction mechanisms

Information on the interactions of microplastics (MPs) with dissolved organic matter (DOM) is essential for understanding their environmental impacts. This study selected fulvic acid (FA) as a typical DOM to investigate the influence of contact time, temperature, dosage, solution pH, salinity, and coexisting metal ions on the adsorption of FA onto polyamide 6 (PA6) MPs. The adsorption kinetic and isotherm can be successfully described by mixed-order (MO) and Freundlich models. The adsorption site energy distribution based on the Freundlich equation was applied to analyze the interaction between FA and PA6-MPs and the adsorption site heterogeneity. Thermodynamic analysis demonstrated that the values of parameters (ΔG_ads^°, ΔS_ads^°, ΔH_ads^°) were significantly affected by initial solution concentrations and the adsorption process was spontaneous, endothermic, and randomness-increased. Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed the importance of amide functional groups of PA6-MPs in controlling FA adsorption. Hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic, electrostatic, and n-π electron donor-acceptor (n-π EDA) interactions played different roles on adsorption of FA under different conditions of solution chemistry. These findings are beneficial to provide new insights involving the adsorption behavior and interaction mechanisms of FA onto PA6-MPs for the environmental risk assessment of MPs.

Non-biodegradable microplastics in soils: A brief review and challenge

Non-biodegradable microplastics (MPs) pollution long-termly existed in soils, and was only concerned in recent years. In order to better understand MP behavior in soils, the sources, migration, distribution, biological effects, degradation and analytical methodology of non-biodegradable MPs in soils were quantificationally summarized from 170 publications based on Web of Science in 1950-2020. From the publications, we found these studies were mainly carried out in the Asia (60.0%) and Europe (23.3%), and most were on agricultural soils (68.5%). Polyethylene-MP (78.8% of the studies), Polypropylene-MP (78.8%), and Polystyrene-MP (45.5%) were the MPs most frequently found in the soils, with a MP size of 20-5000 µm being most common. Of the soil samples 64.3% contained MP 1000-4000 items kg^-1, and the colour frequency ranking is blue (66.7%) > white (61.1%) ≈ red ≈ black. MPs changed the soil microenvironment and microorganism activity, and caused the negative effects on both soil animals (100%) and plants (57.9%). MP degradation was influenced by the photooxidation reactions, microorganism activities, enzymatic effects, environmental conditions, and by the composition, size and morphology of the MPs. An optional analytical method was suggested in this study. At the end of paper, the urgent and important research work in the future was prospected.

The diverse metal composition of plastic items and its implications

Plastic items from urban, freshwater and marine environments as well as from household items and electric supplies were analyzed for their metals and metalloids arsenic, barium, bismuth, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, manganese, nickel, iron, lead, antimony, tin and zinc. Total metal contents ranged from 3 μg/kg (5th percentile) up to 7 g/kg (95th percentile). The median content of most metals was below 1 mg/kg and did not exceed legal limits. Iron and zinc were the metals with the highest contents, with medians of approximately 50 mg/kg. Multivariate statistics (k-means clustering and principal component analysis) did not reveal a polymer specific metal composition except for samples of tire tread rubber that was obtained from passenger car tires. Investigation on the potential origin of the metals in plastics revealed that pigments were the most likely source. In comparison to natural and anthropogenic materials in rivers, oceans and air, the metal content of plastic items was within the same order of magnitude, except for antimony and zinc contents. Literature data on the adsorption capacities of plastics suggested that the inherent content of barium, iron, antimony and zinc was dominating the total content in the studied samples. Compared to suspended sediments in rivers, the metal flux into marine environment transported with plastic items was found to be negligible due to the three orders of magnitude lower masses. The different properties, however, may consequently lead to the transport of plastics and their constituents into pristine and remote environments which natural particulate matter may not reach.

Physicochemical Parameters of the Methylparaben Adsorption from Aqueous Solution Onto Activated Carbon and Their Relationship with the Surface Chemistry

The methylparaben adsorption from aqueous solution onto activated carbon is a relevant topic because of the toxicity of this compound for human and environmental health. The physicochemical parameters allow us to evaluate the performance of the adsorption and the relationship between the surface chemistry and the adsorbed amount of methylparaben. The effect of the solution chemistry on the adsorption was also evaluated. In this work, the methylparaben adsorption on three activated carbons with different physicochemical properties, specifically different contents of oxygenated groups and total basicity, is presented. Kinetic, equilibrium, and calorimetry tests were conducted. The maximum adsorbed amount of methylparaben was achieved on an activated carbon with basic characteristics, Q _max = 1.64 mmol g^-1; in the same activated carbon, the initial rate was 0.20 mmol g^-1 h^-1, and the value determined for the interaction enthalpy was -12.6 × 10^-20 J molecules^-1, and the Gibbs energy change was close to -14.96 kJ mol^-1.

Removal of inorganic arsenic from aqueous solution by Fe-modified ceramsite: batch studies and remediation trials

During sediment remediation, adsorbent addition is an effective technology for the removal of contaminants but the cost is often high. In this study, a low-cost adsorbent, ceramsite, made from contaminated riverbed sediment was synthesized. The Fe-modified ceramsite (FMC) was used as adsorbent to remove arsenate from aqueous solutions and reduce the inorganic arsenic release from contaminated sediments. Kinetic studies showed that chemisorption mainly governed the adsorption process while batch studies yielded the theoretical adsorption capacity for arsenate of 10.63 mg/g at pH = 7 condition. Co-existing anions and pH have no significant impact on the adsorption process. In the regeneration studies, 91, 86, and 80% of the adsorption capacity were recovered in 3 cycles. In-situ remediation trials revealed that the addition of the adsorbent to sediment surface significantly reduced the release of inorganic arsenic into aqueous system, with a reduction efficiency of 86%. Furthermore, the species of the arsenic in the surface layer was significantly inactivated from an active state to a stable state. These findings highlight the application of the FMC as a facile and cost-effective adsorbent for containment of arsenic in solutions and sediments, demonstrating that they are highly applicable for practical cases.

Effect of microplastics and arsenic on nutrients and microorganisms in rice rhizosphere soil

The presence of microplastics and arsenic in soil can endanger crop growth; therefore, their effects on the properties of rhizosphere soil should be evaluated. Large (10-100 µm) and small (0.1-1 µm) polystyrene (PSMP) and polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) particles were added to soil with different arsenic concentrations (1.4, 24.7, and 86.3 mg kg^-1) to investigate the combined effect of microplastics and arsenic pollution on rice rhizosphere soil. After the addition of PSMP and PTFE, pH, arsenic (V) and arsenic (III) in the soil were observed to decrease. The interaction of arsenic with PSMP and PTFE resulted in this phenomenon, leading to a decrease of arsenic bioavailability in the soil. PSMP, PTFE, and arsenic reduced the abundance of Proteobacteria, increased the abundance of Chloroflexi and Acidobacteria, and inhibited soil urease, acid phosphatase, protease, dehydrogenase, and peroxidase activity via affecting the tertiary structure of the enzyme. PSMP, PTFE, and arsenic also reduced the available nitrogen and phosphorus content in the soil. Arsenic increased the soil organic matter content, whereas PSMP and PTFE reduced the organic matter content. Furthermore, microplastics inhibited the effects of arsenic on the microbial and chemical properties of the rhizosphere soil. This study revealed the effects of microplastic and arsenic pollution on rice rhizosphere microorganisms and nutrients, and elucidated the mechanism by which these pollutants retard crop growth in the designed growth medium.

Sampling, pre-treatment, and identification methods of microplastics in sewage sludge and their effects in agricultural soils: a review

Microplastics are widely detected in wastewater treatment plants. They can remove microplastics from wastewaters with a high yield, but it means that microplastics are transferred and accumulated to sewage sludge. Lately, increasing attention has been paid to microplastics in raw and treated wastewaters. However, studies about quantification and identification of microplastics in sewage sludge are very scarce and need to be further investigated. Since the sludge-based microplastics are newly studied and are a challenging matrix due to high organic content, there is limited knowledge of sampling, pre-treatment methods, identification techniques, and expression units. Besides, treated sewage sludge is mostly used for soil amendment to improve soil fertility and it gives economic advantages. This situation creates a pathway for microplastics entering the soil environment with unknown consequences. To the best of our knowledge, microplastics have a large specific surface area, small size, and hydrophobicity which makes it a good adsorbent for other pollutants. Therefore, the combined effect of microplastics with adsorbed pollutants such as heavy metals, antibiotics, and persistent organic pollutants could give serious harm to soil safety and soil organisms. Herein, new developments in the methods for sampling, pre-treatment, and identification techniques of microplastics in sewage sludge were reviewed. Then, the abundance of microplastics, major polymer types, and shapes in sewage sludge were examined. Finally, the effects and ecological risks of microplastic pollution as a result of agricultural usage of sewage sludge in the soil environment have been summarized. Also, the main points for future research were highlighted.

Effects of microplastic on arsenic accumulation in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii in a freshwater environment

Chlamydomonas reinhardtii plays a critical role in the biogeochemical cycling of arsenic (As) and purification of water bodies contaminated with As. We investigated the effects of microplastic pollution on the ability of C. reinhardtii to accumulate As. We revealed that different sized [100 nm (S) and 5 µm (L)] polystyrene microplastics (PSMP) at different concentrations (50 and 100 mg L^-1) interacted with the phospholipid structure in C. reinhardtii. Dispersion forces disrupted the structure and function of membrane proteins, reducing the accumulation and efflux of As(III) and inhibiting the As(V)-As(III)-MMA-DMA detoxification process in C. reinhardtii cells. The maximum As accumulation rates of C. reinhardtii in the control groups, L50, L100, S50, and S100 treatments were 53.71, 50.95, 48.42, 43.83, and 39.11 μg g^-1 h^-1, respectively. Further, PSMPs and As(III) triggered "oxidative bursts" in cells, damaging cell membranes and reducing chlorophyll content and Rubisco activity. As a result, photosynthesis, respiration, and growth were inhibited. When compared with an absence of PSMP, the addition of L- (S-) sized PSMP to the As-containing solution would result in a lower (higher) impact on C. reinhardtii. Overall, this study demonstrated that microplastics significantly affect As accumulation in C. reinhardtii. Our results indicate that the critical role of this algal species in As cycling in earth's pedo- and hydrosphere may be impeded by microplastic pollution.

Interfacial interactions between collected nylon microplastics and three divalent metal ions (Cu(II), Ni(II), Zn(II)) in aqueous solutions

In water environments, nylon microplastics (MPs) and heavy metals are two kinds of common pollutants. This study investigated the adsorption of three divalent metals (Cu(II), Ni(II), Zn(II)) onto collected nylon MPs as function of contact time, temperature, solution pH, ionic strength and concentration of fulvic acid (FA). The kinetic data fitted well with the Elovich and pseudo-second order equations. The result of shrinking core model (SCM) confirms that the adsorption of Cu(II) and Zn(II) was mainly controlled by intraparticle diffusion. The adsorption of three metal ions onto collected nylon MPs is spontaneous, endothermic, with an increased randomness in nature. The Langmuir and Freundlich models successfully described the adsorption isotherms. The speciation distributions of three divalent metals in aqueous solutions were identified to analyze the effects of initial solution pH, ionic strength and fulvic acid concentrations on the adsorption amounts. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicates the importance of surface O-containing groups of collected nylon MPs in controlling the adsorption of three metal ions. This research provides a clear theoretical basis for the behavior of nylon MPs as heavy metals (Cu(II), Ni(II), Zn(II)) carrier and highlights their environmental toxicity, which deserves to be further concerned.

Linking effects of microplastics to ecological impacts in marine environments

Recently, efforts to determine the ecological impacts of microplastic pollutants have increased because of plastic's accelerated contamination of the environment. The tiny size, variable surface topography, thermal properties, bioavailability and biological toxicity of microplastics all offer opportunities for these pollutants to negatively impact the environment. Additionally, various inorganic and organic chemicals sorbed on these particles may pose a greater threat to organisms than the microplastics themselves. However, there is still a big knowledge gap in the assessment of various toxicological effects of microplastics in the environment. Ecological risk assessment of microplastics has become more challenging with the current data gaps. Thus, a current literature review and identification of the areas where research on ecology of microplastics can be extended is necessary. We have provided an overview of various aspects of microplastics by which they interact negatively or positively with marine organisms. We hypothesize that biogeochemical interactions are critical to fully understand the ecological impacts, movement, and fate of microplastics in oceans. As microplastics are now ubiquitous in marine environments and impossible to remove, we recommend that it's not too late to converge research on plastic alternatives. In addition, strict actions should be taken promptly to prevent plastics from entering the environment.

Removal of sulfadiazine from aqueous solution by in-situ activated biochar derived from cotton shell

Phosphoric acid is used to in-situ activate biochar pyrolyzed by cotton shells to enhance the adsorption ability of sulfadiazine (SDZ). To confirm the optimum condition, different impregnation ratios and impregnation times were investigated. It was found that the biochar (BC) pyrolyzed under the condition of an impregnation ratio of 2.5 and an impregnation time of 6 h showed the highest performance for the removal of SDZ. The maximum adsorption ability was 86.89 mg/g at a temperature of 298 K. The pseudo-second-order model was used to disclose the adsorption process of SDZ by BCs. The experimental data were described by the Langmuir and Temkin isotherms at different temperatures. It was found that the sorption of SDZ was an exothermic process according to the thermomechanical analysis. The activated BC could be recycled for at least five times with a high removal rate of SDZ. Thus, activated BCs are regarded as promising adsorbents for SDZ removal.

Toxicological effects of microplastics and heavy metals on the Daphnia magna

Microplastics (MPs) are gradually spreading around the world and becoming a ubiquitous environmental contamination in aquatic environments. Due to its unique physicochemical properties, MPs are considered to be strong adsorbents for environmental pollutants and may affect their fate and toxicity in the environment. In this study, the adsorption behaviors of four typical heavy metal ions (Pb²⁺, Cu²⁺, Cd²⁺, and Ni²⁺) on two sizes of polystyrene MPs (10 μm and 50 μm) were investigated based on batch experiments, and the combined effects of heavy metals and MPs were assessed using Daphnia magna as model. The results showed that smaller MPs (SMPs) exhibited higher adsorption capacities for metal ions (0.261-0.579 mg/g) than that of the larger MPs (LMPs) (0.243-0.525 mg/g), and the affinity sequence of heavy metals on MPs is Pb²⁺ > Cu²⁺ > Cd²⁺ > Ni²⁺. There are better admirable agreements for pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model to fit the adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms, respectively. Additionally, the combined toxicity of MPs and heavy metals was negatively correlated with the adsorption capacity between them. The combined effects of mixtures toward D. magna changed from antagonism to additive effect with increasing MPs concentrations, and SMPs exhibited higher toxicological risk than LMPs. Our findings compared the accumulative effects of various heavy metals on MPs and can contribute to understanding the combined effects of plastics and heavy metals on biota.

Preparation of a Novel Zn(II)-Imidazole Framework as an Efficient and Regenerative Adsorbent for Pb, Hg, and As Ion Removal From Water

An outstanding metal-organic framework sorbent (Zn-MOF) was prepared using Zn²⁺ and 3-amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole to eliminate toxic metal ions from water. Zn-MOF was detected via using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Zn-MOF is stable and has a very large surface area. The uptake properties of Zn-MOF were investigated. The maximum uptake capacity of Zn-MOF for Pb, Hg, and As ions was 1097, 32, and 718 mg/g, respectively. This was obtained at pH = 4, 5, and 6, respectively. The adsorption data is in good agreement with the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order rate models, indicating that the uptake process of Zn-MOF for toxic metal ions was a single layer uptake on a uniform surface via exchange of valence electrons. Thermodynamics shows that the uptake process is autogenic and endothermic. Zn-MOF can be reused at least 6 times. Mercury and lead strongly coordinated with Zn-MOF. The interaction between arsenic and Zn-MOF is weak chemical coordination and ion exchange. Zn-MOF has wide application prospects for toxic metal ion elimination.

Insights into catalytic removal and separation of attached metals from natural-aged microplastics by magnetic biochar activating oxidation process

Natural-aged microplastics with changed surface properties accumulate, redistribute and spread in all water fields as carriers of hazardous substances. The combined hazard of co-contamination of microplastics and hazardous substances expands the ecological risks, which urgently needs to design treatment schemes for pollutant removal from microplastics. In this paper, a facile and applicable magnetic biochar with porosity and graphitization (PGMB) was prepared for realizing the goal of metal removal from the microplastics. Heterogeneous catalysis of persulfate (PS) activated by PGMB achieved the decomposition of organics, with the decrease of more than 60% of the attached Pb on the surface of microplastics, and the adsorbed metal amount by PGMB in this system (31.29 mg/g) is much higher than that by the individual PGMB group (7.07 mg/g). Analysis demonstrated that the organic layer covered on the microplastic surface over the long-term weathering provided the key sites for metal sorption, whose decomposition and peeling were the critical steps in whole process. The prepared PGMB was responsible for activating PS to produce reactive species for decomposing the organic matter accompanied with detaching metals from microplastic surface, also would keep the role for re-adsorption of the released metals and separation from aqueous phase by magnetic force. The influences of natural environmental factors including salinity, common matrix species, and temperature on the performance of PGMB/PS system for metal removal from microplastics were discussed to illustrate the universality of the scheme in saline or organic-rich waters. The results of this study provided underlying insights for removing metals from microplastic surface, and decreasing the harm risks in the co-contamination of microplastics and hazardous substances.

Microplastic particles increase arsenic toxicity to rice seedlings

Hydroponic experiments were conducted to study the effects of microplastic particles of polystyrene (PS) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) on arsenic (As) content in leaves and roots of rice seedlings, and the changes in root vigor and physiological and biochemical indicators under single or combined PS and PTFE with As(III) treatment. Rice biomass decreased with increasing concentrations of PS, PTFE, and As(III) in the growth medium. The highest root (leaf) biomass decreases were 21.4% (10.2%), 25.4% (11.8%), and 26.2% (16.2%) with the addition of 0.2 g L^-1 PS, 0.2 g L^-1 PTFE, and 4 mg L^-1 As(III), respectively. Microplastic particles and As(III) inhibited biomass accumulation by inhibiting root activity and RuBisCO activity, respectively. The addition of As(III) and microplastic particles (PS or PTFE) inhibited photosynthesis through non-stomatal and stomatal factors, respectively; furthermore, net photosynthetic rate, chlorophyll fluorescence, and the Chl a content of rice were reduced with the addition of As(III) and microplastic particles (PS or PTFE). Microplastic particles and As(III) induced an oxidative burst in rice tissues through mechanical damage and destruction of the tertiary structure of antioxidant enzymes, respectively, thereby increasing O₂^- and H₂O₂ in roots and leaves, inducing lipid peroxidation, and destroying cell membranes. When PS and PTFE were added at 0.04 and 0.1 g L^-1, respectively, the negative effects of As(III) on rice were reduced. Treatment with 0.2 g L^-1 PS or PTFE, combined with As(III), had a higher impact on rice than the application of As(III) alone. PS and PTFE reduced As(III) uptake, and absorbed As decreased with the increasing concentration of microparticles. The underlying mechanisms for these effects may involve direct adsorption of As, competition between As and microplastic particles for adsorption sites on the root surface, and inhibition of root activity by microplastic particles.
