Seasonal Succession of Bacterial Communities in Three Eutrophic Freshwater Lakes

Urban freshwater lakes play an indispensable role in maintaining the urban environment and are suffering great threats of eutrophication. Until now, little has been known about the seasonal bacterial communities of the surface water of adjacent freshwater urban lakes. This study reported the bacterial communities of three adjacent freshwater lakes (i.e., Tangxun Lake, Yezhi Lake and Nan Lake) during the alternation of seasons. Nan Lake had the best water quality among the three lakes as reflected by the bacterial eutrophic index (BEI), bacterial indicator (Luteolibacter) and functional prediction analysis. It was found that Alphaproteobacteria had the lowest abundance in summer and the highest abundance in winter. Bacteroidetes had the lowest abundance in winter, while Planctomycetes had the highest abundance in summer. N/P ratio appeared to have some relationships with eutrophication. Tangxun Lake and Nan Lake with higher average N/P ratios (e.g., N/P = 20) tended to have a higher BEI in summer at a water temperature of 27 °C, while Yezhi Lake with a relatively lower average N/P ratio (e.g., N/P = 14) tended to have a higher BEI in spring and autumn at a water temperature of 9-20 °C. BEI and water temperature were identified as the key parameters in determining the bacterial communities of lake water. Phosphorus seemed to have slightly more impact on the bacterial communities than nitrogen. It is expected that this study will help to gain more knowledge on urban lake eutrophication.

Responses of cyanobacterial aggregate microbial communities to algal blooms

Freshwater lakes are threatened by harmful cyanobacterial blooms, whose basic unit is Cyanobacterial Aggregate (CA). CA-attached bacteria play a significant role through different blooming stages with substantial variation of their taxonomic structure. However, little is known about their functional variations and functional links with cyanobacteria due to the lack of reference genomes. In this longitudinal study, we collected 16 CA samples from Lake Taihu, one of China's largest freshwater lakes, from April 2015 to February 2016, and sequenced their V4 region of 16S rRNA genes, full metagenomes (MG), and metatranscriptomes (MT). The analysis of these data revealed the dynamics of microbial taxonomic and functional structure in CAs, influenced by both external environmental factors and internal metabolism. 55 OTUs, 456 genes, and 37 transcripts showed significantly differential abundance across the early, middle, and late blooming stages (ANOVA test, P < 0.05). Total nitrogen and total phosphorus were proved to be the most important environmental drivers of microbial taxonomic and functional variations in CAs (Mantel's r > 0.25, P < 0.05). We constructed 161 high-quality metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), out of which 22 were cyanobacterial strains with diverse energy pathways, transporters and prokaryotic defense systems. Based on these MAGs, we constructed a cyanobacteria-bacteria co-nitrogen-pathway and a cyanobacteria-bacteria co-phosphorus-pathway, by which we demonstrated how nitrogen and phosphorus influence the dynamics of the microbial structure to a certain extent by affecting these co-pathways. Overall, these results characterized the taxonomic, functional, and transcriptional variations of microbes in CAs through different blooming stages. Genome assembly and metabolic analysis of cyanobacteria and their attached bacteria suggested that the material exchange and signal transduction do, indeed, exist among them. Our understanding of the underlying molecular pathways for cyanobacterial blooms could lead to the control of blooms by interventional strategies to disrupt critical microbes' expression.

Complete Genome Sequence of Shewanella sp. Strain Lzh-2, an Algicidal Bacterial Strain Isolated from Lake Taihu, People's Republic of China

Shewanella sp. strain Lzh-2 is an algicidal bacterium isolated from surface water samples collected from Meiliang Bay of Lake Taihu in China. Here, we present the complete genome sequence of Shewanella sp. Lzh-2. Some functional genes and secondary metabolite gene clusters were predicted.

Seasonal and spatial distribution and assembly processes of bacterioplankton communities in a subtropical urban river

The ecological functions of core and non-core bacteria are gradually being identified, yet little is known about their responses to environmental changes and assembly processes, especially in urban river ecosystems. Here, we investigated bacterioplankton communities over 1 year in an urban section of the Ganjiang River, China. The results revealed that the alpha- and beta-diversity of bacterioplankton communities had no significant spatial differences along the urbanization gradient, but they presented distinct seasonal variations. The bacterioplankton communities were comprised of a few core taxa (11.8%) and a large number of non-core taxa (88.2%), of which the non-core taxa were the most active component responsible for community dynamics. Most non-core taxa (76.84%) belonged to non-typical freshwater bacteria, implying that they are more likely to derive from allochthonous inputs than the core taxa. Variance partitioning analyses showed that air temperature, flow rate and water chemistry together explained 58.2 and 38.9% of the variations of the core taxa and non-core taxa, respectively. In addition, the relative importance of temperature and water chemistry on the bacterioplankton communities prevailed over that of flow rate alone. This means that deterministic processes and stochastic processes simultaneously control the bacterioplankton community assembly, with deterministic processes contributing more than stochastic processes.

Characteristics of planktonic and sediment bacterial communities in a heavily polluted urban river

Urban rivers represent a unique ecosystem in which pollution occurs regularly, altering the biogeochemical characteristics of waterbodies and sediments. However, little is presently known about the spatiotemporal patterns of planktonic and sediment bacterial community diversities and compositions in urban rivers. Herein, Illumina MiSeq high-throughput sequencing was performed to reveal the spatiotemporal dynamics of bacterial populations in Liangtan River, a heavily polluted urban river in Chongqing City (China). The results showed the richness and diversity of sediment bacteria were significantly higher than those of planktonic bacteria, whereas a strong overlap (46.7%) in OTUs was identified between water and sediment samples. Bacterial community composition remarkably differed in waters and sediments. Planktonic bacterial communities were dominated by Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Cyanobacteria and Actinobacteria, while sediment bacterial communities mainly included Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi and Bacteroidetes. Additionally, several taxonomic groups of potential bacterial pathogens showed an increasing trend in water and sediment samples from residential and industrial areas (RI). Variation partition analysis (VPA) indicated that temperature and nutrient were identified as the main drivers determining the planktonic and sediment bacterial assemblages. These results highlight that bacterial communities in the polluted urban river exhibit spatiotemporal variation due to the combined influence of environmental factors associated with sewage discharge and hydropower dams.

High heterogeneity of bacterioplankton community shaped by spatially structured environmental factors in West Lake, a typical urban lake in eastern China

Elucidating the bacterioplankton spatial distribution patterns and its determinants is a central topic in ecological research. However, research on the distribution patterns of bacterioplankton community composition (BCC) within a small-sized, highly dynamic freshwater lake remains unclear. In this study, we collected surface water samples from West Lake to investigate the spatiotemporal variation of BCC by 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing. Clear spatial heterogeneity in BCC was identified both in summer and winter. The relatively high abundant taxa exhibited greater correlations with environmental factors and other abundant species in summer than in winter. Variation partitioning analysis was used to unravel the relative importance of environmental factors and spatial processes and further explore the underlying mechanism of BCC successions. Our results showed the predominant shared effect of environmental and spatial factors on BCC in summer (68.41%) and winter (57.37%), indicating that spatially structured environmental factors were the key determinants of structuring BCC spatial heterogeneity in West Lake in the two seasons. Furthermore, environmental factors alone explained a higher proportion of the variation in summer whereas spatial factors explained a higher proportion in winter. These divergences may be related to seasonal environmental changes and anthropogenic disturbances. Our study provided knowledge on BCC spatial heterogeneity in small freshwater habitats and their underlying determinants in different seasons.

Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Vibrio Communities and Abundance in Dongshan Bay, South of China

The Vibrio genus inhabit estuarine and marine ecosystem throughout the world and can cause severe infections in humans and animals. Previous studies have demonstrated the dynamics of Vibrio at both community and population levels and assessed the close relationship between environmental factors and Vibrio diversity and abundance, such as temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen. It is also generally believed that aquaculture is the fastest-growing food sector, which is also applying great environmental impacts on microbial communities in aquatic ecosystems. However, our understanding of the spatiotemporal quantification of Vibrio throughout the four seasons in the aquaculture zone and response to environmental factors remains poor. To explore the spatiotemporal distribution and abundance of the Vibrio community with their related environmental factors and detect the relationships among them, we collected 10 seawater sites spanning four seasons across the whole year in Dongshan Bay for investigating the Vibrio community dynamics. Marked differences in diversity and abundance of the Vibrio community were observed between seasons, which were mainly driven by temperature, dissolved oxygen, nitrate, and nitrite. qPCR analysis showed that Vibrio abundance was most abundant in the summer (5.37 × 10⁶ copies/L), compared with the autumn (4.58 × 10⁶ copies/L), spring (1.18 × 10⁶ copies/L), and winter (1.55 × 10⁴ copies/L). A total of 22 Vibrio operational taxonomic units (OTUs) and 28 species were identified by universal bacteria 16S rRNA gene and cultivation methods, with Vibrio fortis the dominant in these aquaculture areas. To summarize, our present study is one of the few studies to research the occurrence of Vibrio in marine aquaculture of South China, and the results indicate that Vibrio are widely distributed in aquaculture environment and that a further risk assessment is needed to be conducted.

The involvement of α-proteobacteria Phenylobacterium in maintaining the dominance of toxic Microcystis blooms in Lake Taihu, China

Lake Taihu in China has suffered serious harmful cyanobacterial blooms for decades. The algal blooms threaten the ecological sustainability, drinking water safety, and human health. Although the roles of abiotic factors (such as water temperature and nutrient loading) in promoting Microcystis blooms have been well studied, the importance of biotic factors (e.g. bacterial community) in promoting and meditating Microcystis blooms remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the ecological dynamics of bacterial community, the ratio of toxic Microcystis, as well as microcystin in Lake Taihu. High-throughput 16S rRNA sequencing and principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that the bacteria community compositions (BCCs) clustered into three groups, the partitioning of which corresponded to that of groups according to the toxic profiles (the ratio of toxic Microcystis to total Microcystis, and the microcystin concentrations) of the samples. Further Spearman's correlation network showed that the α-proteobacteria Phenylobacterium strongly positively correlated with the toxic profiles. Subsequent laboratory chemostats experiments demonstrated that three Phenylobacterium strains promoted the dominance of the toxic Microcystis aeruginosa PCC7806 when co-culturing with the non-toxic PCC7806 mcyB^- mutant. Taken together, our data suggested that the α-proteobacteria Phenylobacterium may play a vital role in the maintenance of toxic Microcystis dominance in Lake Taihu.

Disentangling the seasonal co-occurrence patterns and ecological stochasticity of planktonic and benthic bacterial communities within multiple lakes

Both the planktonic bacterial community (PBC) and benthic bacterial community (BBC) are important for biogeochemical processes in freshwater lakes. Despite their ecological significance, little is known about their seasonal co-occurrence patterns and the ecological processes that drive them. In this study, we aimed to investigate the ecological associations among bacterial taxa and assembly processes of PBC and BBC in different seasons. We used 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing of a total of 150 water and sediment samples collected from multiple lakes distributed in an urban region of China during winter and summer. Our results revealed that PBC showed stronger seasonal variations in co-occurrence patterns than BBC, suggesting that BBC had greater temporal stability than PBC. Winter PBC network was characterized by higher connectivity and complexity, and thereby the formation of a highly stable community structure; whereas lower connectivity arising from the presence of fewer predicted keystone taxa (hubs and connectors in a network) was destabilizing to summer PBC network. In addition, the phylum Firmicutes identified as a putative keystone taxon of PBC in both seasons played a non-negligible role in maintaining network structure which may result from strong functional associations with other bacterioplankton. Temperature and pH were the best explanatory factors predicting the seasonal co-occurrence patterns of PBC and BBC, respectively. Normalized stochasticity ratio based on null-model analysis indicated that deterministic processes overwhelmed stochastic processes in governing the assembly of PBC and BBC in both seasons. However, we observed a greater influence of ecological stochasticity on BBC assembly than PBC assembly in both seasons. Taken together, these findings provide insights into understanding the impacts of habitat heterogeneity and seasonal variability on microbial assemblage patterns in lake ecosystems.

Seasonal dynamics of lotic bacterial communities assessed by 16S rRNA gene amplicon deep sequencing

Aquatic microbial diversity, composition, and dynamics play vital roles in sustaining water ecosystem functionality. Yet, there is still limited knowledge on bacterial seasonal dynamics in lotic environments. This study explores a temporal pattern of bacterial community structures in lotic freshwater over a 2-year period. The aquatic bacterial communities were assessed using Illumina MiSeq sequencing of 16S rRNA genes. Overall, the communities were dominated by α-, β-, and γ-Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Flavobacteriia, and Sphingobacteriia. The bacterial compositions varied substantially in response to seasonal changes (cold vs. warm), but they were rather stable within the same season. Furthermore, higher diversity was observed in cold seasons compared to warm periods. The combined seasonal-environmental impact of different physico-chemical parameters was assessed statistically, and temperature, suspended solids, and nitrogen were determined to be the primary abiotic factors shaping the temporal bacterial assemblages. This study enriches particular knowledge on the seasonal succession of the lotic freshwater bacteria.

Characteristics of spatial and seasonal bacterial community structures in a river under anthropogenic disturbances

In this study, the seasonal characteristics of microbial community compositions at different sites in a river under anthropogenic disturbances (Maozhou River) were analyzed using Illumina HiSeq sequencing. Taxonomic analysis revealed that Proteobacteria was the most abundant phylum in all sites, followed by Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Chloroflexi, Acidobacteria and Firmicutes. The variations of the community diversities and compositions between the seasons were not significant. However, significant differences between sites as well as water and sediment samples were observed. These results indicated that sites under different levels of anthropogenic disturbances have selected distinct bacterial communities. pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), concentrations of total nitrogen (TN) and heavy metals were the main factors that influence the diversity and the composition of bacterial community. Specifically, the relative abundance of Proteobacteria was negatively correlated with pH and DO and positively correlated with TN, while Actinobacteria and Verrucomicrobia showed the opposite pattern. Moreover, positive correlations between the relative abundances of Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes and the concentration of heavy metals were also found. Results of functional prediction analysis showed no significant differences of the carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus metabolism across the sites and seasons. Potential pathogens such as Vibrio, Arcobacter, Acinetobacter and Pseudomonas were found in these samples, which may pose potential risks for environment and human health. This study reveals the effect of anthropogenic activities on the riverine bacterial community compositions and provides new insights into the relationships between the environmental factors and the bacterial community distributions in a freshwater ecosystem under anthropogenic disturbances.

Dredging mitigates cyanobacterial bloom in eutrophic Lake Nanhu: Shifts in associations between the bacterioplankton community and sediment biogeochemistry

Cyanobacterial blooms are a worldwide environmental problem, which is partly attributed to their access to excessive nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). Preventing the blooms by reducing N and P from internal inputs is viewed as a challenge. To evaluate the effects of dredging on cyanobacterial abundances and bacterioplankton communities, water and sediment samples were collected from eutrophic Lake Nanhu (Wuhan, China) before dredging (2017) and after dredging (2018). After dredging, significant decreases were observed for sediment nutrients (e.g., C, N, and P sources); C-, N-, P-, and S-cycling-related enzyme activity; N- and P-cycling-related gene abundance; microbial abundance; and dramatic changes were observed in the composition of the sediment microbial community. The release rates of nutrient including nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic matter decreased after dredging, and sediment biogeochemistry was closely correlated to nutrient release rates. Additionally, our observations and analyses indicated that the abundance and diversity of the bacterioplankton community decreased significantly, the composition and interaction of the bacterioplankton community dramatically changed, and the bacterioplankton community function (e.g., N, P-cycling-related enzymes and proteins) down regulated after dredging. Water and sediment physicochemical factors explained 72.28% variation in bacterioplankton community composition, and these physicochemical factors were significantly correlated with diversity, composition, and function of bacterioplankton community. Our findings emphasized that cyanobacterial blooms in freshwater ecosystems were closely correlated with noncyanobacterial bacterioplankton that were largely conserved at the phylum level, with Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes as the main taxa. To our knowledge, this is the first report clarifying the mechanism of cyanobacterial blooms mitigation by dredging, via changing the association between the bacterioplankton community and sediment biogeochemistry. Our findings are of significance and indicate that dredging is effective for mitigating cyanobacterial blooms.

Suspended particles phoD alkaline phosphatase gene diversity in large shallow eutrophic Lake Taihu

The bacterial phoD gene encodes alkaline phosphatase plays an important role in the release of bioavailable inorganic phosphorus (P) from organic P in environmental systems. However, phoD gene diversity in suspended particles in shallow freshwater lakes is poorly understood. In this study, we explored the potential relationship between environmental factors and phoD phosphatase gene in suspended particles in different ecosystem types (lake zones) in Lake Taihu, a large shallow eutrophic lake in China. Quantitative PCR and high-throughput sequencing were used to analyze phoD gene abundance and the phoD-harboring bacterial community composition. Our results indicate that the distribution of phoD gene abundance in suspended particles had a high spatiotemporal heterogeneity. The phoD gene abundance in each lake zone decreased significantly from June to September. The dominant phoD-harboring phylum in all samples was Actinobacteria, followed by Proteobacteria, Cyanobacteria and Gemmatimonadetes. The first predominant phoD-harboring genera varied among samples, but most of them belonged to phylum Actinobacteria. Driven by different environmental factors, the phoD-harboring bacterial community structure varied with sampling month and ecosystem type. Nitrate and ammonia nitrogen were the main environmental drivers of phoD-harboring bacterial community in suspended particles in the river mouth zone, while water pH and dissolved oxygen were important factors for the algae-dominated, macrophyte-dominated and central lake zones.

Contribution of influent rivers affected by different types of pollution to the changes of benthic microbial community structure in a large lake

As a microbial group in watershed ecosystems, the bacterial community is a sensitive indicator of external environmental fluctuations. However, the effects of different sources of exogenous pollution on the diversity and structure of bacterial communities in inflow rivers and lakes have not been studied in depth. In this study, we used 16S rRNA gene sequencing technology to study the diversity and composition of bacterial communities in rivers affected by different types of pollution. The results showed that the composition of the bacterial communities in rivers with different exogenous pollution sources was different. For example, the genus Arenimonas, which belongs to the Gamma-proteobacteria, is extensively enriched in IDPR (industrially and domestically polluted rivers) and ADPR (agriculturally and domestically polluted rivers) (KW, p < 0.05), while the genus Micromonospora is a more unique genus found in APR (agriculturally polluted rivers). When exploring the topology and classification characteristics of river microbial symbiosis models, it was found that the bacterial community symbiosis network is divided into six modules under different exogenous pollution regimes, and the nodes in the different modules perform different functions, such as the IDPR-dominated module I. In the network, the relatively abundant the genus Flavobacterium and the genus Nitrospira are the key factors driving the nitrogen cycle in the watershed where the samples were collected. In addition, our research indicates that communities in lake environments may be more susceptible to disturbances of various physiological or functional redundancies, thus retaining their original community structure. Overall, this study emphasizes that adaptive changes in the bacterial community structure of the sediments in the catchment and the occurrence of interactions are responses to different exogenous pollution sources.

Dynamics of bacterioplankton community structure in response to seasonal hydrological disturbances in Poyang Lake, the largest wetland in China

Bacterioplankton communities play a critical role in biogeochemical cycling in freshwater environments, but how the hydrological regime impacts the assembly of bacterioplankton communities remains unclear. This study examined differences in bacterioplankton community structures between wet (July and September) and dry (October and November) seasons in two consecutive years (2016 and 2017) in Poyang Lake, the largest seasonal freshwater lake in China. Our results revealed no overall difference in bacterioplankton compositions and their predicted functions among spatially separated sites. However, bacterioplankton communities did show significant temporal shifts, mainly between samples in November and other months. Transitions from the dry to the wet season were observed in October in both sampling years. Meanwhile, insignificant spatial but significant temporal differences were also found for physicochemical variables. Moreover, redundancy analysis indicates that compared with water depth, water temperature was found to better explain changes in the bacterioplankton community. These findings consistently indicate that the bacterioplankton community in Poyang Lake is relatively less sensitive to annual hydrology shifts than water temperature and nutrient conditions.

Linking bacterial community shifts with changes in the dissolved organic matter pool in a eutrophic lake

Aquatic bacterial communities play crucial roles in the circulation of nutrients in watershed ecosystems. However, the interaction between bacterial communities and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in freshwater ecosystems has not been studied in depth. In our study, we examined the constitution and interactions of CDOM with the bacterial community in Lake Chaohu and its inflow rivers under the influence of different exogenous pollutants. The results revealed that the bacterial community diversity in the inflow rivers was significantly lower than that in the lake sites. Clustering of different types of polluted inflow rivers integrated with the most abundant genera observed in specific areas indicated that environmentally guided species selection had a large impact on the composition of aquatic bacterial communities. Moreover, our study suggests that communities in lake environments may be more susceptible to interference through a variety of physiologies or via functional redundancy, allowing them to preserve their community structure. Through linear discriminant analysis effect size (Lefse) methods, we revealed that some taxa (from phylum to genus) were consistently enriched in the lake sites. Based on correlation network analysis results, the supersession niches of bacterial community members related to different CDOM in the biogeochemical process was determined. This study provides an ecological basis for the control of external pollution and the protection of the water environment in watershed ecosystems.

Trophic Status Is Associated With Community Structure and Metabolic Potential of Planktonic Microbiota in Plateau Lakes

Microbes in various aquatic ecosystems play a key role in global energy fluxes and biogeochemical processes. However, the detailed patterns on the functional structure and the metabolic potential of microbial communities in freshwater lakes with different trophic status remain to be understood. We employed a metagenomics workflow to analyze the correlations between trophic status and planktonic microbiota in freshwater lakes on Yun-Gui Plateau, China. Our results revealed that microbial communities in the eutrophic and mesotrophic-oligotrophic lake ecosystems harbor distinct community structure and metabolic potential. Cyanobacteria were dominant in the eutrophic ecosystems, mainly driving the processes of aerobic respiration, fermentation, nitrogen assimilation, nitrogen mineralization, assimilatory sulfate reduction and sulfur mineralization in this ecosystem group. Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria (Alpha-, Beta-, and Gammaproteobacteria), Verrucomicrobia and Planctomycetes, occurred more often in the mesotrophic-oligotrophic ecosystems than those in the eutrophic ecosystems, and these taxa potentially mediate the above metabolic processes. In these two groups of ecosystems, a difference in the abundance of functional genes involved in carbohydrate metabolism, energy metabolism, glycan biosynthesis and metabolism, and metabolism of cofactors and vitamins significantly contribute to the distinct functional structure of microbiota from surface water. Furthermore, the microbe-mediated metabolic potentials for carbon, nitrogen and sulfur transformation showed differences in the two ecosystem groups. Compared with the mesotrophic-oligotrophic ecosystems, planktonic microbial communities in the eutrophic ecosystems showed higher potential for aerobic carbon fixation, fermentation, methanogenesis, anammox, denitrification, and sulfur mineralization, but they showed lower potential for aerobic respiration, CO oxidation, nitrogen fixation, and assimilatory sulfate reduction. This study offers insights into the relationships of trophic status to planktonic microbial community structure and its metabolic potential, and identifies the main taxa responsible for the biogeochemical cycles of carbon, nitrogen and sulfur in freshwater lake environments.

Seasonality overwhelms aquacultural activity in determining the composition and assembly of the bacterial community in Lake Taihu, China

Aquaculture accounts for an extremely valuable and rapidly expanding sector of global food production, yet its environmental impacts on aquatic ecosystems have attracted much concern. In this study, we collected water samples from eastern Lake Taihu, China. We targeted sites varying in their intensity of aquacultural activities and sampled them over multiple seasons. For each sample, we measured physicochemical variables, and we sequenced the 16S rRNA gene of the respective bacterial communities using an Illumina second-generation sequencing platform. Marked differences in diversity and bacterial community composition were observed between seasons, whereas we observed relatively weak differences between sites. Remarkable differences in the abundance of the bacterial community were observed at the phylum and genus levels across the different seasons. Stochastic processes dominated the assembly of bacterial communities in the aquaculture-influenced systems, and the assembly processes of bacterial community differed between seasons. Our observations highlight the effect of seasonality on bacterial communities and provide a more complete knowledge base for the proper assessment of the effects of aquacultural activities on freshwater ecosystems.

Network Analysis Reveals Seasonal Patterns of Bacterial Community Networks in Lake Taihu under Aquaculture Conditions

Bacterial communities play essential roles in multiple ecological processes, such as primary production and nutrient recycling in aquatic systems. However, although the composition, diversity and function of bacterial communities have been well studied, little is known about the interactions and co-occurrence characteristics of these communities, let alone their seasonal patterns. To investigate the seasonal variations of bacterial community interactions, we collected water samples from four seasons in Lake Taihu and applied network analysis to reveal bacterial community interactions. Bacterial community networks were non-random in structure, and interactions among bacterial taxa in the networks varied markedly in different seasons. The autumnal bacterial network was the largest and most complex among obtained networks, whereas the spring correlation network was the simplest, having no module hubs or connectors. The important species of the networks were the dominant bacterial phyla/classes (e.g., Alphaproteobacteria and Bacteroidetes), although their relative abundance varied among seasons. The relationships between species and measured environmental variables changed over seasons; fewer environmental factors were correlated with bacterial species in the spring bacterial network, while we observed a greater number of species-environment correlations in the winter network. Our study highlights the seasonal differences in bacterial community interactions and expands our understanding of freshwater microbial ecology in systems affected by aquaculture.
