Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering Revealed by Interfacial Charge-Transfer Transitions

Ultrathin Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Framework Nanosheets with Activated Ligand-Cluster Units for Enhanced SERS

Ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets (MOFNs) comprise an emerging family of attractive materials with excellent potential for use in different catalytic, electrochemical, and sensing applications owing to their striking features such as ultrathin thickness, a large surface area, and highly ordered network structures. However, to the best of our knowledge, the ligand-cluster units activated through exfoliation into the MOFNs have rarely been realized, which is indeed crucial for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) analysis. Herein, we emphasize that the activated ligand-cluster units are based on the accessible coordination sites at the exposed cluster nodes accompanied by a complete excitation of the ligand-cluster units under incident photons, which make MOFNs highly effective SERS substrates, significantly outperforming their bulk counterparts. The SERS enhancement of MOFNs is further illustrated by an efficient integration of the inherent ligand-cluster charge-transfer (LCCT) transitions in MOFNs into interfacial charge-transfer processes through an "L"-type charge-transfer (CT) pathway, as further evidenced by an ultrahigh degree (0.98) of CT contributed to the SERS enhancement. This study provides an efficient strategy of exfoliating MOFs into ultrathin nanosheets for the design of highly efficient MOF-based SERS substrates.

Silver Cluster Interactions with Tyrosine: Towards Amino Acid Detection

Tyrosine (Tyr) is involved in the synthesis of neurotransmitters, catecholamines, thyroid hormones, etc. Multiple pathologies are associated with impaired Tyr metabolism. Silver nanoclusters (Ag NCs) can be applied for colorimetric, fluorescent, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) detection of Tyr. However, one should understand the theoretical basics of interactions between Tyr and Ag NCs. Thereby, we calculated the binding energy (Eb) between Tyr and Agnq (n = 1-8; q = 0-2) NCs using the density functional theory (DFT) to find the most stable complexes. Since Ag NCs are synthesized on Tyr in an aqueous solution at pH 12.5, we studied Tyr-1, semiquinone (SemiQ-1), and Tyr-2. Ag32+ and Ag5+ had the highest Eb. The absorption spectrum of Tyr-2 significantly red-shifts with the attachment of Ag32+, which is prospective for colorimetric Tyr detection. Ag32+ interacts with all functional groups of SemiQ-1 (phenolate, amino group, and carboxylate), which makes detection of Tyr possible due to band emergence at 1324 cm-1 in the vibrational spectrum. The ground state charge transfer between Ag and carboxylate determines the band emergence at 1661 cm-1 in the Raman spectrum of the SemiQ-1-Ag32+ complex. Thus, the prospects of Tyr detection using silver nanoclusters were demonstrated.

In situ Plasmon-Enhanced CARS and TPEF for Gram staining identification of non-fluorescent bacteria

In this work, we report in situ nonlinear microscopic images on plasmon-enhanced coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) and plasmon-Induced two-photon excited fluorescence （TPEF)of non-fluorescent microorganism. Our unique synthesized Au@Ag nanorods provide with two distinct surface-plasmon resonance (SPR) at 400 and 800 nm, respectively, which can efficiently induce linear fluorescence signals of E. coli but also enhance the nonlinear optical spectroscopy signals of TPEF, and coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) imaging of E. coli and S. aureus. Furthermore, calculations with complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) reveals the hot electrons of SPs can efficiently induce the biological fluorescence of non-fluorescent flavin nucleotides on the surface of E. coli. This novel mechanism is expected to guide the development and application of new microbial detection reagents. Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria can be well distinguished by nonlinear microscopic imaging of the CARS signal at 1589 cm^-1. Benefit by the strong penetrability of non-linear optical signals, it is expected to realize in situ real-time detection and classification of pathogenic microbial infections in vivo.

Electro-responsive actuators based on graphene

Electro-responsive actuators (ERAs) hold great promise for cutting-edge applications in e-skins, soft robots, unmanned flight, and in vivo surgery devices due to the advantages of fast response, precise control, programmable deformation, and the ease of integration with control circuits. Recently, considering the excellent physical/chemical/mechanical properties (e.g., high carrier mobility, strong mechanical strength, outstanding thermal conductivity, high specific surface area, flexibility, and transparency), graphene and its derivatives have emerged as an appealing material in developing ERAs. In this review, we have summarized the recent advances in graphene-based ERAs. Typical the working mechanisms of graphene ERAs have been introduced. Design principles and working performance of three typical types of graphene ERAs (e.g., electrostatic actuators, electrothermal actuators, and ionic actuators) have been comprehensively summarized. Besides, emerging applications of graphene ERAs, including artificial muscles, bionic robots, human-soft actuators interaction, and other smart devices, have been reviewed. At last, the current challenges and future perspectives of graphene ERAs are discussed.

Artificial intelligence: A powerful paradigm for scientific research

Artificial intelligence (AI) coupled with promising machine learning (ML) techniques well known from computer science is broadly affecting many aspects of various fields including science and technology, industry, and even our day-to-day life. The ML techniques have been developed to analyze high-throughput data with a view to obtaining useful insights, categorizing, predicting, and making evidence-based decisions in novel ways, which will promote the growth of novel applications and fuel the sustainable booming of AI. This paper undertakes a comprehensive survey on the development and application of AI in different aspects of fundamental sciences, including information science, mathematics, medical science, materials science, geoscience, life science, physics, and chemistry. The challenges that each discipline of science meets, and the potentials of AI techniques to handle these challenges, are discussed in detail. Moreover, we shed light on new research trends entailing the integration of AI into each scientific discipline. The aim of this paper is to provide a broad research guideline on fundamental sciences with potential infusion of AI, to help motivate researchers to deeply understand the state-of-the-art applications of AI-based fundamental sciences, and thereby to help promote the continuous development of these fundamental sciences.

Observation of Nodal-Line Plasmons in ZrSiS

Nodal-line semimetals (NLSMs), a large family of new topological phases of matter with continuous linear band crossing points in the momentum space, attract considerable attention. Here, we report the direct observation of plasmons originating from topological nodal-line states in a prototypical NLSM ZrSiS by high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy. There exist three temperature-independent plasmons with energies ranging from the near- to the mid-infrared frequencies. With first-principles calculations of a slab model, these plasmons can be ascribed to the correlations of electrons in the bulk nodal lines and their projected surface states, dubbed nodal-line plasmons. An anomalous surface plasmon has higher excitation energy than the bulk plasmon due to the larger contribution from the nodal-line projected surface states. This work reveals the novel plasmons related to the unique nodal-line states in a NLSM.

Enabling three-dimensional porous architectures via carbonyl functionalization and molecular-specific organic-SERS platforms

Molecular engineering via functionalization has been a great tool to tune noncovalent intermolecular interactions. Herein, we demonstrate three-dimensional highly crystalline nanostructured D(C₇CO)-BTBT films via carbonyl-functionalization of a fused thienoacene π-system, and strong Raman signal enhancements in Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) are realized. The small molecule could be prepared on the gram scale with a facile synthesis-purification. In the engineered films, polar functionalization induces favorable out-of-plane crystal growth via zigzag motif of dipolar C = O···C = O interactions and hydrogen bonds, and strengthens π-interactions. A unique two-stage film growth behavior is identified with an edge-on-to-face-on molecular orientation transition driven by hydrophobicity. The analysis of the electronic structures and the ratio of the anti-Stokes/Stokes SERS signals suggests that the π-extended/stabilized LUMOs with varied crystalline face-on orientations provide the key properties in the chemical enhancement mechanism. A molecule-specific Raman signal enhancement is also demonstrated on a high-LUMO organic platform. Our results demonstrate a promising guidance towards realizing low-cost SERS-active semiconducting materials, increasing structural versatility of organic-SERS platforms, and advancing molecule-specific sensing via molecular engineering.

Nanostructured films of organic semiconductors with low lying LUMO orbitals can enhance Raman signals via a chemical enhancement mechanism but currently the material choice is limited to fluorinated oligothiophenes. Here, the authors investigate the growth of a porous thienoacene film enabled by carbonyls and demonstrate molecular specific organic-SERS platforms.

Biosensing Using SERS Active Gold Nanostructures

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has become a powerful tool for biosensing applications owing to its fingerprint recognition, high sensitivity, multiplex detection, and biocompatibility. This review provides an overview of the most significant aspects of SERS for biomedical and biosensing applications. We first introduced the mechanisms at the basis of the SERS amplifications: electromagnetic and chemical enhancement. We then illustrated several types of substrates and fabrication methods, with a focus on gold-based nanostructures. We further analyzed the relevant factors for the characterization of the SERS sensor performances, including sensitivity, reproducibility, stability, sensor configuration (direct or indirect), and nanotoxicity. Finally, a representative selection of applications in the biomedical field is provided.

Surface-Enhanced Raman Sensing of Semi-Volatile Organic Compounds by Plasmonic Nanostructures

Facile detection of indoor semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) is a critical issue to raise an increasing concern to current researchers, since their emissions have impacted the health of humans, who spend much of their time indoors after the recent incessant COVID-19 pandemic outbreaks. Plasmonic nanomaterial platforms can utilize an electromagnetic field to induce significant Raman signal enhancements of vibrational spectra of pollutant molecules from localized hotspots. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensing based on functional plasmonic nanostructures has currently emerged as a powerful analytical technique, which is widely adopted for the ultra-sensitive detection of SVOC molecules, including phthalates and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from household chemicals in indoor environments. This concise topical review gives updated recent developments and trends in optical sensors of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and SERS for effective sensing of SVOCs by functionalization of noble metal nanostructures. Specific features of plasmonic nanomaterials utilized in sensors are evaluated comparatively, including their various sizes and shapes. Novel aptasensors-assisted SERS technology and its potential application are also introduced for selective sensing. The current challenges and perspectives on SERS-based optical sensors using plasmonic nanomaterial platforms and aptasensors are discussed for applying indoor SVOC detection.

Cost-effective large-area Ag nanotube arrays for SERS detections: effects of nanotube geometry

This study demonstrated highly-ordered metallic nanotube arrays (MeNTAs) with a precisely controlled geometric shape to promote surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Using both simulation and experimental methods, we designed and fabricated MeNTAs with nanotube geometries that possess a large surface area to absorb probe molecules as well as geometric features capable of inducing hot spots for SERS enhancement. The proposed top-down wafer-scale lithographic and sputter-deposition process is a simple and cost-effective approach to the fabrication of 1 mm × 1 mm MeNTA at room temperature. Simulation results of nanotubes with various materials (Au, Ag, and Cu), diameters (100-1500 nm), geometric shapes (circle, equilateral triangle and square) and triangle corner curvatures (ranging from 0 to 300 nm) identified Ag triangles with sharp tips as the geometry best suited to SERS enhancement. The SERS spectra of crystal violet molecules generated from the Ag MeNTAs verified the patterns observed in computational simulations, wherein the effects of MeNTA on SERS decreased with an increase in the size of the nanotubes. Enhancement factor of 1.06 × 10⁹was obtained from our triangular Ag MeNTA, confirming its efficacy as an ultrahigh sensitivity SERS-active substrate.

Polydopamine-Mediated Ag and ZnO as an Active and Recyclable SERS Substrate for Rhodamine B with Significantly Improved Enhancement Factor and Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation

We demonstrate the development of an active multicomponent Ag/PDA/ZnO@GMF surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate via introducing bio-inspired polydopamine (PDA) in between a noble metal (AgNPs) and ZnO nanorods. The insertion of PDA enabled efficient charge redistribution between metal and semiconductor through their aromatic cores. The substrate exhibited a high enhancement factor (EF) of 1010 for the organic pollutant dye Rhodamine B (RhB). Subsequent exposure of a RhB-loaded substrate to an external UV light source developed an efficient pathway for RhB degradation and replenished the substrate for multiple usage cycles with remarkable photostability. Thus, enhanced performance of the substrate in terms of light-harvesting capability and high charge-separation efficiency was observed. In addition, the much larger surface area of the branched ZnO nanostructures served as a template for PDA assisted synthesis and controlled deposition of AgNPs, which further improved the SERS effect. Our work seeks to understand the contributions of the noble metal and semiconductor components and the synergistic effects of combining them with a facile charge transport medium to enable the fabrication of highly efficient SERS substrates for use in industrial and environmental applications.

A heat and force locating sensor with nanoscale precision: a knitted graphene sheet

Fast and accurately locating the heating or force bearing points is essential to the maintenance and diagnosis of nano/micro-electromechanical systems. Here, a knitted graphene sheet (KGS), prepared by knitting graphene nanoribbons, is proposed as a heat or force sensor to locate the spot with nanoscale precision under thermal or mechanical loadings. The heat flux transport among the ribbons in the KGS is more difficult than in the ribbon due to the weaker van der Waals interactions among ribbons, so the heat energy can be restricted in the directly loaded ribbons over a period of time. Molecular dynamics results demonstrate that the KGS can efficiently locate and evaluate the spots and sizes of heat/force sources with high accuracy dependent on the width of the ribbons in the KGS. Our research provides a new detection approach and sheds light on designing and assembling KGS-based nanosensors for locating thermal and mechanical loads.
