Abstract
The lack of genomic resources for aquatic invertebrates restricts their use as sentinel species in coastal environments. It is known that where genomic data are not available, suppression subtractive hybridisation (SSH) can generate cDNA libraries representative of pollutant-responsive gene transcription in aquatic vertebrates. To assess whether the approach was equally suited to aquatic invertebrates, altered gene expression in digestive gland of the mussel, Mytilus edulis, in response to exposure to benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) (1 mg/l) was investigated with SSH and a nylon macroarray. Screening of the subtracted libraries showed 112/250 up-regulated and 25/55 down-regulated clones were positive for differential expression and characterisation of these identified 87 with unique sequence suitable for array on a nylon membrane. The transcripts isolated were from a diverse range of genes involved in general stress, oxidative stress, cell adhesion, transcriptional and translational regulation, transport mechanisms, energy metabolism, cell metabolism, lipid metabolism, protein turnover and activation, lysosomal activity and 22 cryptic clones. Subsequent use of the clones in macroarray format to analyse expression of BaP-responsive genes (0 vs 4 day exposed) showed 0-100-fold increased levels of the forward-subtracted probes and between 0 and 0.1-fold down-regulation of the reverse-subtracted probes. Only 15% of the clones showed less than 2-fold change in expression. The gene ontology of the transcripts isolated demonstrates that BaP elicits a multitude of responses with a major feature being disruption of cellular redox status. The results indicate that the use of SSH and a macroarray is a robust method to discover novel pollutant-responsive genes in aquatic invertebrates.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to find a reliable biomarker of seawater pollution. For this purpose the contents of Zn and Cu, proteins and antioxidant activity in mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis collected from polluted and non-polluted sites of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast were compared. To determine the above-mentioned indices atomic spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, fluorescence, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and two antioxidant tests were used. It was found that the amounts of Zn and Cu were significantly higher in the mussel proteins from the polluted than from the non-polluted sites (P<0.05). FT-IR spectroscopy and fluorescence revealed specific qualitative changes in secondary and tertiary structures in mussel proteins in the samples from polluted sites. The thermodynamic properties of proteins and the changes upon denaturation were correlated with the secondary structure of proteins and disappearance of alpha-helix. Purified protein scavenging activity against 2, 2'-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate) radical cation (ABTS(*+)) was significantly higher in mussel samples from polluted than from non-polluted sites. Therefore, the changes in Zn and Cu concentration, in protein's secondary and tertiary structures and antioxidant activity in mussels M. galloprovincialis from polluted sites can be a reliable biomarker of the level of the seawater pollution.

Abstract
A combination of biomarkers and gene expression analyses was used to investigate the occurrence of a stress syndrome in mussels (Mytilus edulis) caged along a copper pollution gradient in the Visnes fjord, Norway. The stress level in mussels, as calculated by a novel algorithm (the "Expert System") from a set of seven biomarkers, was compared with gene expression changes utilising a low-density oligonucleotide microarray, employing 24 different genes involved in both cellular homeostasis and stress-related responses. The biomarker battery included lysosomal membrane stability, lysosomal accumulation of neutral lipids and lipofuscin, lysosomal/cytoplasm volume ratio, Ca(2+)-ATPase and catalase activities, and total metallothionein content. Integration of the biomarkers into the Expert System ranked individuals sampled at site 2 as unstressed, mussels sampled at site 3 as being subject to low stress, and those from site 4, which is adjacent to what used to be a copper mine, as being highly stressed, with respect to specimens sampled from the reference site. Microarray analyses demonstrated that at the two innermost and mostly polluted sites, gene expression patterns where severely altered. In particular, some genes exhibited a linear activation response along the copper gradient, e.g. metallothioneins mt 20 and mt 10, and catalase. In addition, stress responsive kinase (krs), glutathione transferase (gst), major vault protein and histones (h1, h2a and h4) were significantly up-regulated at the innermost site. In conclusion, these results demonstrated that sites could be discriminated using both a physiological and a molecular approach. The development of a stress syndrome along the pollution gradient was evidenced with a novel mussel microarray, both in terms of numbers of regulated genes and level of gene response.

Abstract
The content and distribution of n-alkane (C8-C35) and isoprenoid (pristane and phytane) hydrocarbons were investigated in two species of bivalve mollusk, mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) and cockle (Cerastoderma edule), collected at different points of the Galicia littoral zone during the period from December 2002 to February 2003 (after the Prestige oil spill). Samples were analyzed by high-resolution gas chromatography equipped with a flame ionization detector. The highest levels were found in mussels and cockles coming from two estuarine bays, Rías de Arousa and Vigo. Hydrocarbons with carbon chain length > 30 were detected and determined in all samples. The abundance of these hydrocarbons in biota could be interpreted with regard to the feeding and living habits. Chemometric techniques have been employed to analyze data and determine the potential source of hydrocarbon contamination. Differences between mussels and cockles were observed in relation to aliphatic content. According to the data analysis, the main source of hydrocarbon contamination of investigated samples seems to be more related to the intense traffic of vessels in these estuarine bays than to the Prestige oil spill.

Abstract
A rapid and simple method is proposed for determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in complex matrices such as marine biota. The method uses sonication, by means of an ultrasonic probe, as a new tool for assisted extraction, coupled with reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RP-LC) with fluorescence detection (FL) for determination of 16 US EPA priority PAH. Separation and detection of the 16 PAH were complete in 45 min by RP-LC with a C18 column and acetonitrile-water gradient elution. Multivariate optimisation of the variables affecting extraction (ultrasound radiation amplitude, sonication time, and temperature of the water-bath in which the extraction cell was placed) was conducted. The accuracy of the method was determined by analysis of a certified reference material and comparison of the results obtained with those from another method (microwave-assisted extraction and GC-MS). The new technique avoids the main problems encountered in the determination of PAH in complex matrices such as marine biota, and no clean-up step is necessary. The method was applied to determination of PAH in estuarine biota samples from the Urdaibai estuary (Biscay, Spain).

Abstract
In order to assess the biological effects of the Prestige oil spill (POS), mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis), European hake (Merluccius merluccius) and European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) were sampled between April and September 2003 in various geographical areas of Bay of Biscay: Galicia, Central Cantabrian and East Cantabrian. In mussels, several cell and tissue biomarkers were measured: peroxisome proliferation as induction of acyl-CoA oxidase (AOX) activity, lysosomal responses as changes in the structure (lysosomal volume density, V(V(L)), surface-to-volume ratio, S/V(L), and numerical density, N(V(L))) and in membrane stability (labilization period, LP), cell type replacement as relative proportion of basophilic cells (volume density of basophilic cells, V(V(BAS))) in digestive gland epithelium, and changes in the morphology of digestive alveoli as mean luminal radius to mean epithelial thickness (MLR/MET). Additionally, flesh condition index (FCI) and gonad index (GI) were measured as supporting parameters. In hake and anchovy, liver histopathology was examined to determine the prevalence of parasites, melanomacrophage centers, non-specific lesions (inflammatory changes, atrophy, necrosis, apoptosis), early non-neoplastic toxicopathic lesions (i.e., hepatocellular nuclear polymorphism), foci of cellular alteration, benign and malignant neoplasms. In mussels, AOX induction was noticeable in April except in Galicia. LP values were low in all the geographical areas studied, indicating disturbed health, especially in Galicia. Alike, lysosomal enlargement was observed in most stations as shown by the extremely low S/V(L) values. V(V(BAS)) and MLR/MET values were markedly high. Overall, employed biomarkers detected exposure to toxic chemicals and disturbed health in mussels from Bay of Biscay, with impact decreasing from April to September. Although hepatocellular nuclear polymorphism and nematode parasitization in fish liver were remarkably prominent in some areas, they cannot be hitherto related to POS, since we lack historical data to determine whether the prevalences found were normal or significantly raised after POS.

Abstract
In an attempt to improve the detection of peroxisome proliferation as a biomarker in environmental pollution assessment, we have applied a novel approach based on peroxisomal proteomics. Peroxisomal proteins from digestive glands of mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis were analyzed using 2-DE and MS. We have generated a reference 2-DE map from samples obtained in a well-studied reference area and compared this with peroxisomal proteomes from other sequenced genomes. In addition, by comparing 2-DE maps from control samples with samples obtained in a polluted area, we have characterized the peroxisome proliferation expression pattern associated with exposure to a polluted environment. Over 100 spots were reproducibly resolved per 2-DE map; 55 differentially expressed spots were quantitatively detected and analyzed, and 14 of these showed an increase in protein expression of more than fourfold. Epoxide hydrolase, peroxisomal antioxidant enzyme, and sarcosine oxidase (SOX) have been identified by ESI MS/MS, and acyl-CoA oxidase, multifunctional protein, and Cu,Zn-superoxide dismutase were immunolocalized by Western blotting. Our results indicate that a peroxisomal protein pattern associated to marine pollutant exposure can be generated, and this approach may have a greater potential as biomarker than traditional, single-protein markers.

Abstract
Green-lipped mussels, Perna viridis, and Manila clams, Ruditapes philippinarum were sourced from "clean" sites in the Hong Kong region, depurated in a laboratory using uncontaminated filtered seawater for 8 days, and transplanted to a suspected gradient of chemically polluted sites in Hong Kong. After 14- and 28-days of field exposure, several antioxidant parameters including glutathione S transferase (GST), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and glutathione (GSH) were quantified in gill and hepatopancreas tissues. Whole body tissue concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCs) were determined in pooled site samples. Chemical analyses indicated that: (a) clams had higher levels of PAHs, PHCs, DDTs and PCBs, whereas mussels had higher hexachlorocyclohexane (HCHs) and there was no difference between species for dieldrin and remaining OCs; (b) Kat O should not be continued as a "clean" reference site for Hong Kong, because of the levels of contaminants measured and (c) PAH concentrations in the current survey were similar to those previously measured. Toxicological conclusions were: (a) antioxidant responses were different between species; (b) CAT and GST have highest utility in clams for field use in Hong Kong, whereas CAT in both gill and hepatopancreas tissue showed most potential in mussels; (c) significant induction of antioxidant responses over day 0 (excluding GPx in both tissues, and GST in mussel hepatic tissue); (d) groups of contaminants do not consistently induce antioxidant responses and (e) organochlorines and PCBs correlated significantly with CAT and GST in clam hepatopancreas and with CAT in mussel gill and hepatic tissue. Multivariate statistical techniques indicated little relationship between the site patterns for antioxidant responses and the contaminant gradients identified in body burden analysis.

Abstract
Marine mussels Mytilus sp. were transplanted on a monthly basis in cages over one year to oyster farms and harbours in the Arcachon Bay (France) in order to assess the water quality of the bay. Contaminant levels (organotin compounds, trace metals, PCBs and PAHs) were measured in tissues of transplanted mussels and mussels from a reference station, along with physiological parameters of the mussels (condition indexes, lipid content and dry weight). Four biomarkers (AChE: acetylcholinesterase activity, GST: gluthathione S-transferase activity, CAT: catalase activity and TBARS: thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance content) were also monitored. The remote stations monitored (oyster parks) exhibited no accumulation pattern of pollutants. Their respective concentrations therefore constitute a background level of the contamination in the bay ([TBT]= 30 ng Sn g(-1) dw, [SigmaHAPs]= 100 ng g(-1) dw, [SigmaPCBs]= 35 ng g(-1) dw). The elevated chemical contamination of the largest harbour of the bay, the Arcachon harbour, can be interpreted in terms of persistence of organotin compounds ([SigmaOTs]= 1500-2000 ng Sn g(-1) dw) and PAHs ([SigmaHAPs]= 4500-5000 ng g(-1) dw) in sediments and, to a lesser extent, of direct inputs of copper ([Cu]= 20 microg g(-1) dw in harbours versus 7 in oyster parks) and petrogenic PAHs ([methylphenanthrenes]= 1600 ng g(-1) dw in the dockyard versus 170 at the gas stations), related to the use of copper-based antifouling paints and to dockyard activity, respectively. However, the Arcachon Bay presents a low contamination level by PCBs and metals, including harbour stations. Furthermore, higher levels of other PAHs (particularly alkyl PAHs such as methylphenanthrenes/1600 ng g(-1) dw) not included in the 16 PAHs from the EPA priority list (usually studied in biomonitoring programmes/1500 ng g(-1) dw) in the Arcachon harbour underline the need to integrate these compounds in biomonitoring of highly PAH-polluted areas such as harbours in order to avoid misinterpretation of the biological responses observed. Biomarker responses were not able to discriminate the different chemical contamination levels recorded in the Arcachon Bay and rather reflected changes in environmental factors. Furthermore, the strong intraspecies variability of biological responses could be due to genetic differences of mussels from the Arcachon Bay. It is the first time that such an integrated monitoring is performed in the Arcachon Bay, also taking into account seasonal variations of chemical contents and biomarkers levels in mussel tissues.

Abstract
Lead (Pb) and paraquat (PQ) have different toxic mechanisms associated with cell damage. Pb may induce alterations in zinc containing proteins, including the known inhibitory effect on the enzyme delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase, disrupting the heme-synthesis pathway. During PQ biotransformation, redox cycle reactions enhance oxyradical production, which may lead to pro-oxidative conditions. In this study, we analyzed the effects of Pb and PQ on antioxidant enzymes and thiol status, using the digestive glands of the mussel Perna perna collected in a mussel farm on Santa Catarina Island. Mussels were exposed to Pb (1 ppm) and PQ (10 ppm), either separately or concomitantly, for 48 h. We were unable to detect an effect of Pb treatment on the enzymes, catalase, glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), glutathione S-transferase (GST) and glutathione reductase (GSSG-reductase), which contrasts to the effect of PQ, increasing GSSG-reductase and G6PDH, but decreasing GST activity. The thiol status showed a pro-oxidative trend, observed mainly through a decrease in the reduced/oxidized glutathione ratio, despite the total-glutathione increase. Protein-mixed disulfides and protein thiols did not change by the treatments. The observed effects of PQ and Pb were consistent with literature. Pb had a suppressive effect on the enzymatic changes elicited by PQ, while the changes in the thiol/disulfide parameters were retained.

Abstract
In December 2000, the ship 'Coral Bulker' ran aground at the entrance of the port of Viana do Castelo (North-west coast of Portugal). A large amount of fuel oil was spilled and part of it reached the shore. To evaluate the spatial and temporal impact of this oil spill, a field study, and several laboratory toxicity tests were performed using Mytilus galloprovincialis as biological indicator of environmental contamination and the biomarkers glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) as indicative criteria. Fifteen days after the oil spill, mussels collected at stations located near the ship presented higher and lower values of GSTs and AChE activity, respectively. These results, and those obtained in the laboratory toxicity tests, evidence that these biomarkers were sensitive indicators of exposure to this kind of pollution and were able to monitor a spatial impact of the oil spill of at least 10 km, confirming the higher level of contamination near the ship and a contamination gradient along the sampling stations. One year after the accident, such a contamination gradient was no longer evident. This study highlight the potential suitability of a biomarker approach for assessing spatial and temporal impacts of marine pollution accidents, such as fuel oil spills, suggesting the inclusion of these biomarkers in risk assessment studies, as cost-effective and early warning recognized tools. Major advantages and limitations of the biomarker approach used in this study are further discussed.

Abstract
Seasonal variations of six mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) biomarkers at two sites in the Mediterranean Sea were compared with physiological indices (condition, growth and gonad maturation), environmental parameters (temperature, salinity and turbidity), and chemical contamination levels. The basal levels of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), DNA adducts, benzo[a]pyrene hydroxylase (BPH), heat-shock proteins (HSP70), metallothioneins (MT) and P-glycoprotein (P-gp)-mediated multixenobiotic resistance (MXR) were estimated as early warning signals in caged mussels sampled at Carteau (native site) and La Fourcade (transplantation site) over a 2-year period. The Carteau and La Fourcade mussels have specific chemical contamination profiles but a similar range of values. For example, both are highly contaminated by heavy metals (201 and 258.4 mg kg(-1) dw, respectively) and considered as moderately impacted for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, contamination levels at Carteau are twice as high for PAHs (101.5 mg g(-1) dw) and PCBs (90.2 mg g(-1) dw) than La Fourcade. The seasonal contamination trend at Carteau showed six-fold higher levels of pyrolytic pollutants in winter. Although few tissue lesions were detected in individuals studied at either site, greater parasitic infestation was observed at Carteau. The results of findings from the two Mediterranean pilot studies support the adaptability of transplanted mussels to be used as biomarkers and to establish physiological endpoints for chemical contaminant exposure.

Abstract
The algae considered new foods according to Regulation CE 258/97 need a guarantee of their healthfulness before being in the European market. In this work ten samples of the brown alga Himanthalia elongata have been analyzed with the aim of verifying the absence of aliphatic hydrocarbons, due to the ability of the macroalgae to capture lipophilic organic compounds of the marine water coming from accidental or continuous leaks of raw oil and refined products, which happen each year with the growth of the industrialization and the demand of energy. The fat of the samples were Soxhlet extracted using hexane:dichloromethane (1:1) for 7h. The organic fractions were purified using silica microcolumns. The identification and quantification of the aliphatic hydrocarbons have been carried out using gas chromatography (GC) with flame ionization detector (FID). The total hydrocarbon content was between 14.8 and 40.2 microg g(-1) dry weight.

Abstract
The biologically active compounds, antioxidant activities, and free radical scavenging effects of black mussel dry matter (Mytilus galloprovincialis)--(BMDM) were investigated. The extract from BMDM with absolute methanol (BMDMAMet) showed the strongest inhibition of lipid peroxidation as a function of its concentration, and was comparable to the antioxidant activity of butylated hydroxyanisole, at the same concentration of 0.2 mg/ml. The extract with 50%methanol/water (BMDM50%Met) had the weakest antioxidant activity, whereas other extracts such as 1.2 M HCl in 50%methanol/water (BMDM50%Met/HCl) exhibited an average inhibition of lipid peroxidation. BMDMAMet extract showed marked activities in free radical scavenging determined by beta-carotene bleaching (beta-carotene), nitric oxide (NO*) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate) radical cation (ABTS*+ methods. The antioxidant activities of BMDMAMet extract determined beta-carotene, NO* and ABTS*+ methods showed the highest correlation coefficients (R2) such as 0.998, 0.9976 and 0.6103, respectively, with the presence of total polyphenols. BMDM50%Met had lower antioxidant ability than BMDM50%Met/HCl in different scavenging methods, indicating that the major antioxidant components in these extracts must be derived from the polyphenols. Correlation between proteins and antioxidants was very low (0.0318 and 0.0433). The mussel extracts from polluted areas have shown by all using methods higher antioxidant activity than from the clean ones. The results presented in this report indicate that the antioxidant activities of mussel extracts could possibly be an additional index of pollution characterization.

Abstract
A comparative study has been performed on populations of Unionidae from the Lake Suszek and Brda river situated in the centre of Tucholski Landscape Park, around which there are no factories and the Pilica river--affected by the influence of the nearby town agglomeration. Mussels collected from Suszek were also treated (72 h) with various concentrations of dichlorophenol (DCP; 0.1, 0.15, 0.2 ppm) and paraquat (PQ; 1, 5, 10 ppm) in laboratory conditions (aquarium). The activities of glutathione S-transferase (GST) and cytochrome P450 monooxygenase system (NAD(P)H ferricyanide reductase, NAD(P)H cytochrome c reductase), cytochrome P450 content and b(5) in microsomal and cytosolic fractions of digestive gland were investigated. The differences in enzyme activities between groups of mussels, which were exposed to various concentrations of chemical pollutants, as well as the dependence on geographical distribution in Poland, were observed. In experiments with DCP the dose-dependent increase in GST activity was found, but no changes after PQ treatment were observed. Results, in experiments with DCP and PQ, have varied from no change to increase or decrease in the measured monooxygenase activities and cytochrome P450 content. Increases have been recorded in two cases (NADPH ferricyanide reductase and cytochrome P450) after exposure to DCP and in the case of NADH ferricyanide reductase following the exposure to PQ. NAD(P)H cytochrome c reductase activity and content of P450 decreased considerably in 5 and 10 ppm PQ-treated mussels. Thus, the treatment with DCP and PQ in water changed the properties of the mussels digestive gland cytochrome P450 monooxygenase system. These changes may be used as a bioindicator, at the molecular level, of exposure to those xenobiotics not only in controlled experiments (aquaria) but also in the natural environment.

Abstract
Carps (Cyprinus carpio) and red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) were sampled from two lowstream Mediterranean rivers (Anoia and Cardener) receiving extensive urban and industrial waste water discharges. Tissue residues of selected pollutants (organochlorinated compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)) were determined in conjunction with different biochemical responses (cytochrome P450, phase II enzymes) with the aim of investigating whether resident organisms were responsive to changes in water quality. Biota inhabiting those rivers were highly exposed to complex mixtures of polychlorobiphenyls and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (up to 19 ng/g w.w.) and PAHs (up to 6097 ng/g of hydroxylated PAHs in bile), the highest residues being observed in carps from Cardener. This has a reflection on 7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) activity; that in carps from Cardener ranged between 350 and 550 pmol/min/mg protein, whereas in carps from Anoia ranged between was 90 and 250 pmol/min/mg protein. The highest activity recorded was downstream of the sewage treatment plants in both rivers. Phase II enzymes were less sensitive to polutant exposure than EROD; nonetheless, both glutathione S-transferase and UDP-glucuronyl transferase were higher in carps from Cardener. The results support the usefulness of the combined use of chemical and biochemical responses to assess and diagnose pollution in highly stressed ecosystems.

Abstract
With the aim of studying levels of antioxidant and peroxisomal enzymes and the structure of peroxisomes in relation to body burdens of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis, oysters Crassostrea sp., crabs Carcinus maenas and mullets Mugil cephalus were sampled in two Basque estuaries (Bay of Biscay): Urdaibai (Laida, Txatxarramendi, Arteaga, and downstream a sewage treatment plant-STP) and Plentzia. In general, animals showed higher concentrations of contaminants in winter than in summer and no relevant differences were detected among locations. Conversely, antioxidant enzyme activities were higher in summer. Enzyme expression was studied in mullets using immunochemical methods. By immunoblotting season-dependent differences were detected for Mn-superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD). As for the immunohistochemical staining, mullets sampled in summer in Plentzia showed significantly higher optical densities for acyl-CoA oxidase and lower for both Cu,Zn-SOD and Mn-SOD than those collected downstream a STP as well as higher catalase immunostaining than those collected in winter. Peroxisomal volume density (V(vp)) of mussels sampled in Laida and Txatxarramendi did not show seasonal variations, while for oysters collected in Laida and Arteaga V(vp) was higher in summer. Crab and mullet V(vp) were also higher in summer. In conclusion, the estuaries of Urdaibai and Plentzia can be considered as low to moderately polluted areas and levels of PAHs and PCBs do not show marked variations apart from seasonal variations. Animals can be adapted to low pollution conditions and, under these circumstances, seasonal factors might affect biomarker responses to a greater extent than pollution variations.

Abstract
Marine mussels, Perna viridis, were transplanted from a reference site to various polluted sites around Hong Kong. After 30 d of exposure, antioxidative responses in the gills and hepatopancreas and tissue concentrations of chlorinated hydrocarbons [polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and chlorinated pesticides (CPs)] were determined for individual mussels. Glutathione S transferase (GST) and glutathione (GSH) were positively correlated with tissue PCB concentrations. Only one of the enzymatic antioxidants, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), showed significant response to tissue PCB. No significant correlation was found between tissue concentrations of chlorinated hydrocarbons and other enzymatic antioxidants (superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione reductase (GR) and NADPH DT-diaphorase (DT-d). Oxidative stress, measured as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, was correlated with chlorinated pesticide concentrations in tissues. This study demonstrated a correlation between GST/ GSH and chlorinated hydrocarbons. The apparent lack of correlation between trace organic pollutants and some of the enzymatic antioxidants may be due to the inhibitory effects caused by these chemicals. The above results suggest that more investigations are needed before these enzymes can be used as biomarkers.
