Abstract
Recent research studies have shown that vitamin C (ascorbic acid) may affect bone mineral density and that a deficiency of ascorbic acid leads to the development of osteoporosis. Patients suffering from an inflammatory bowel disease are at a risk of low bone mineral density. It is vital to notice that patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis also are at risk of vitamin C deficiency which is due to factors such as reduced consumption of fresh vegetables and fruits, i.e., the main sources of ascorbic acid. Additionally, some patients follow diets which may provide an insufficient amount of vitamin C. Moreover, serum vitamin C level also is dependent on genetic factors, such as SLC23A1 and SLC23A2 genes, encoding sodium-dependent vitamin C transporters and GSTM1, GSTP1 and GSTT1 genes which encode glutathione S-transferases. Furthermore, ascorbic acid may modify the composition of gut microbiota which plays a role in the pathogenesis of an inflammatory bowel disease.

Abstract
Antibiotic treatment, as an important therapeutic intervention, can cause damage to the host microbiome and the intestinal mucosal barrier. In order to find a way to alleviate the side effects of antibiotics, the present study investigated the effects of fucoidan (ANP) isolated from Ascophyllum nodosum on gut microbiota dysbiosis and colonic inflammation induced by ciprofloxacin-metronidazole (CiMe) in C57BL/6J mice. Our results showed that dietary ANP prevented colon shortening, alleviated the colonic tissue damages, and partially reversed the alteration of gut microbiota by increasing the abundance of potentially beneficial bacteria, e.g., Ruminococcaceae_UCG_014 and Akkermansia and decreasing the abundance of harmful bacteria, e.g., Proteus and Enterococcus. ANP also suppressed the overproduction of TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 and promoted the expression of IL-10. In addition, ANP reversed the decreased production of short-chain fatty acids in CiMe-treated mice. Furthermore, correlation analysis indicated the presence of critical gut microbiota, which played important roles in reducing the inflammation-related indices. Thus, the present study suggests that fucoidan isolated from Ascophyllum nodosum is effective in providing protection against the negative effects of antibiotics on gut microbiota and colonic health.

Abstract
Green and dark tea extract (GTE/DTE) ameliorate chemical-induced colitis in mice; however, the role of gut microbiota in the anticolitis effects of green and dark tea in mice remains unclear. This study aims to explore the role of modulations in gut microbes mediated by green and dark tea in colitis mice by fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). Our results indicated that GTE and DTE (5 mg/kg bodyweight/day for 4 weeks) exhibited prebiotic effects on the donor mice. Moreover, the FMT treatments (transferring the microbiota daily from the 1 g/kg bodyweight fecal sample to each recipient) indicated that, compared with the fecal microbiota from the normal diet-treated donor mice, the fecal microbiota from the GTE- and DTE-treated donor mice significantly ameliorate colitis-related symptoms (e.g., loss of bodyweight, colonic inflammation, loss of barrier integrity, and gut microbiota dysbiosis) and downregulated the TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB pathway. Collectively, GTE and DTE ameliorate chemical-induced colitis by modulating gut microbiota.

Abstract
Non-targeted LC-MS metabolomics on fruit of three wild and domesticated apple species (Malus sylvestris, M. sieversii and M. domestica) showed that two crab apple (M. sylvestris) accessions were distinguished by high concentrations of an ascorbic acid glycoside (AAG). This was partly purified, but key NMR signals were masked by inseparable sucrose. Reference samples of 2-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl L-ascorbic acid and 2-O-β-D-galactopyranosyl L-ascorbic acid were synthesised, but both coincided with the crab apple AAG on LC-MS. Peracetylation of the crab apple extract allowed both purification and characterisation, and the AAG was proven to be 2-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl L-ascorbic acid by comparison of 1H NMR, HRMS and HPLC data with synthesised peracetylated ascorbyl glycoside standards. The stability of the natural AA 2-β-glycoside was similar to synthetic 2-O-α-D-glucopyranosyl L-ascorbic acid, used widely in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. This discovery in crab apples (Rosaceae) is only the fourth reported occurrence of any ascorbyl glycoside from plants, the others being from Cucurbitaceae, Solanaceae and Brassicaceae. It is hypothesised that AAGs may be more widespread in plants than currently realised.
