Abstract
Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) offer advantages over widely deployed silicon solar cells in terms of ease of fabrication; however, the device is still under rigorous materials optimization for cell performance, stability, and cost. In this work, we explore a version of a PSC by replacing the polymeric hole transport layer (HTL) such as Spiro-OMeTAD, P3HT, and PEDOT: PSS with a more air-stable metal oxide, viz., nitrogen-doped titanium dioxide (TiO2:N). Numerical simulations on formamidinium (FA)-based PSCs in the FTO/TiO2/FAPbI3/Ag configuration have been carried out to depict the behaviour of the HTL as well as the effect of absorber layer thickness (∆t) on photovoltaic parameters. The results show that the cell output increases when the HTL bandgap increases from 2.5 to 3.0 eV. By optimizing the absorber layer thickness and the gradient in defect density (Nt), the device structure considered here can deliver a maximum power conversion efficiency of ~21.38% for a lower HTL bandgap (~2.5 eV) and ~26.99% for a higher HTL bandgap of ~3.0 eV. The results are validated by reproducing the performance of PSCs employing commonly used polymeric HTLs, viz. Spiro-OMeTAD, P3HT, and PEDOT: PSS as well as high power conversion efficiency in the highly crystalline perovskite layer. Therefore, the present study provides high-performing, cost-effective PSCs using TiO2:N.

Abstract
Nanocomposites comprising nitrogen-doped TiO2 and reduced graphene oxide (N/TiO2/rGO), with different rGO loading qualities, were prepared by a cost-effective microwave-assisted synthesis method. The synthesized materials were broadly characterized by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), electron microscopy (SEM-EDS), and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms. Anatase was the only crystalline phase observed for all synthesized materials. The rGO loading did not affect the morphological properties, but it positively influenced the photocatalytic activity of the nanocomposite materials, especially at low rGO loading. Photocatalysts were evaluated via the degradation of specific organic micropollutant (OMP) pharmaceuticals: ciprofloxacin (CIP), diclofenac (DCF), and salicylic acid (SA), under different radiation sources: ultraviolet A (UVA), solar light simulator (SLS), blue visible light (BVL) and cold visible light (CVL). CIP and SA were removed effectively via the synergy of adsorption and photocatalysis, while DCF degradation was achieved solely by photocatalysis. After implementing scavenger agents, photocatalytic degradation processes mainly depended on the specific pollutant type, while irradiation sources barely defined the photocatalytic mechanism. On the other hand, changes in irradiation intensity significantly influenced the photolysis process, while photocatalysis was slightly affected, indicating that irradiation spectra are more relevant than intensity.

Abstract
Photocatalysts with heterojunction structure have been widely used for organic degradation. In this study, CuS/g-C3N4heterojunction was formed byin situself-assembly via a simply hydrothermal method. A series of characterizations were applied to analyzing the morphology, structure, optical properties and photo-induced electron transfer of the samples. The effect of CuS mass ratio in the CuS/g-C3N4composite on methyl blue (10 mg l-1) degradation under visible-light illumination was discussed. When CuS mass ratio was 60%, CuS/g-C3N4behaved the highest photocatalytic efficiency which is 17 times higher than that of pure g-C3N4, and the optimal heterojunction exhibited promising photocatalytic stability as well. The synthesized CuS/g-C3N4with intimate contact and promising photocatalytic performance provides important implications on analogous researches on g-C3N4-based heterojunctions for photocatalytic applications.

Abstract
Nowadays, the sulfur-containing compounds are removed from motor fuels through the traditional hydrodesulfurization technology, which takes place under harsh reaction conditions (temperature of 350–450 °C and pressure of 30–60 atm) in the presence of catalysts based on alumina with impregnated cobalt and molybdenum. According to the principles of green chemistry, energy requirements should be recognized for their environmental and economic impacts and should be minimized, i.e., the chemical processes should be carried out at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure. This approach could be implemented using photocatalysts that are sensitive to visible light. The creation of highly active photocatalytic systems for the deep purification of fuels from sulfur compounds becomes an important task of modern catalysis science. The present critical review reports recent progress over the last 5 years in heterogeneous photocatalytic desulfurization under visible light irradiation. Specific attention is paid to the methods for boosting the photocatalytic activity of materials, with a focus on the creation of heterojunctions as the most promising approach. This review also discusses the influence of operating parameters (nature of oxidant, molar ratio of oxidant/sulfur-containing compounds, photocatalyst loading, etc.) on the reaction efficiency. Some perspectives and future research directions on photocatalytic desulfurization are also provided.

Abstract
Dye-sensitized TiO2 has found many applications for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC), solar-to-chemical energy conversion, water/air purification systems, and (electro)chemical sensors. We report an electrochemical system for testing dye-sensitized materials that can be utilized in photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors and energy conversion. Unlike related systems, the reported system does not require a direct electron transfer from semiconductors to electrodes. Rather, it relies on electron shuttling by redox mediators. A range of model photocatalytic materials were prepared using three different TiO2 materials (P25, P90, and PC500) and three sterically hindered phthalocyanines (Pcs) with electron-rich tert-butyl substituents (t-Bu4PcZn, t-Bu4PcAlCl, and t-Bu4PcH2). The materials were compared with previously developed TiO2 modified by electron-deficient, also sterically hindered fluorinated phthalocyanine F64PcZn, a singlet oxygen (1O2) producer, as well as its metal-free derivative, F64PcH2. The PEC activity depended on the redox mediator, as well as the type of TiO2 and Pc. By comparing the responses of one-electron shuttles, such as K4Fe(CN)4, and 1O2-reactive electron shuttles, such as phenol, it is possible to reveal the action mechanism of the supported photosensitizers, while the overall activity can be assessed using hydroquinone. t-Bu4PcAlCl showed significantly lower blank responses and higher specific responses toward chlorophenols compared to t-Bu4PcZn due to the electron-withdrawing effect of the Al3+ metal center. The combination of reactivity insights and the need for only microgram amounts of sensing materials renders the reported system advantageous for practical applications.

Abstract
Algal biomass synthesised nanocomposites have a higher surface area and reusability advantages. This study aimed to synthesise and characterise ZnMgO and silica-supported graphene with ZnMgO (G-ZnMgO) nanocomposites from Kappaphycusalvarezii and evaluate their potential in the application of photocatalysis to remove Rhodamine-B (RhB) and methylene blue (MB) dyes from their aqueous medium by maximising the percentage removal using response surface methodology (RSM) modelling. Nanocomposites were synthesised and characterised by biogenic and instrumental (Powder X-ray diffraction (P-XRD), electron microscopic analysis (SEM and TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX). and UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS)) methods, respectively; modelling predicted the optimal conditions to be photocatalyst dosage and contact time of 1 g/L and 90 min, respectively, to obtain maximum MB dye removal of 80% using G-ZnMgO. The results showed the best fit between experimental and RSM predicted values. Thus, the obtained results conclude that the algal biomass synthesised nanocomposites were found to be one of the potential photocatalysts for the removal of RhB and MB dyes from their aqueous solution.

Abstract
Due to the aggravation of environmental pollution and the energy crisis, it is urgent to develop and design environment-friendly and efficient photocatalysts for water splitting. van der Waals heterostructures composed of different two-dimensional materials offer an easily accessible way to combine properties of individual materials for applications. Herein, a novel Cs3Bi2I9/C2N heterostructure is proposed through first-principles calculations. The structural, electronic, and optical properties, as well as the charge transfer mechanism at the interface of Cs3Bi2I9/C2N are systematically investigated. Due to the difference between the work functions of Cs3Bi2I9 and C2N monolayers, when they are constructed into heterostructures, redistribution of charge occurs in the whole structure, and some of the charge transfer occurs at the interface due to the formation of an internal electric field. The band structure of Cs3Bi2I9/C2N has type-II band alignment, and the band edge position as well as the band-gap value of the heterostructure are suitable for visible light water splitting. The in-plane biaxial strain, interfacial spacing, and external electric field can effectively modulate the electronic structure and photocatalytic performance of the heterostructure. Under certain conditions, the heterostructure can be changed from type-II to type-I band alignment, accompanied by the transition from an indirect band-gap semiconductor to a direct band-gap semiconductor. Moreover, the intrinsic anion defect (I vacancy) at different positions, as donor defects, can introduce defect levels near the conduction band edge, which affects the transition of photogenerated carriers in these systems. Our findings provide a theoretical design for strategies to improve the performance of two-dimensional perovskites/C2N in photocatalytic and optoelectronic applications.

Abstract
Reducing the thermal conductivity (κ) of mesoporous N-doped titania (TiO2) is crucial for the development of TiO2-based materials that exhibit excellent electronic, photochemical, and thermoelectric properties. Mesopores can contribute to the reduction of κ via phonon scattering, and the scattering effect due to the randomness of crystal interfaces should be significantly reduced to clarify the role of mesopores in reducing thermal conductivity. Highly ordered mesoporous N-doped TiO2 comprising large crystallites was prepared with silica colloidal crystals as a template into which a Ti source was introduced, followed by calcination with urea. N-doped samples comprising large crystallites exhibiting random mesopores were also prepared and used for the investigation of the effects of the shape and arrangement of the mesopore on phonon scattering. The mesostructures of the two separately prepared N-doped TiO2 samples were retained after sintering at 873 K and 80 MPa to fabricate pellets. Furthermore, the effective suppression of the long mean-free-path phonon conduction by the thin pore walls at a nanometer scale thickness significantly reduced the thermal conductivities of both samples. The presence of ordered mesopores further contributed to the reduction of κ, which was probably due to the enhanced contribution of the backscattering of phonons caused by ordered pore wall surfaces.

Abstract
In this study, TiO2-based photocatalysts modified with Pt and Cu/CuOx were synthesized and studied in the photocatalytic reduction of CO2. The morphology and chemical states of synthesized photocatalysts were studied using UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A series of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with maximum intensity in the range of 365–450 nm was used to determine the action spectrum of photocatalysts. It is shown for, the first time, that the pre-calcination of TiO2 at 700 °C and the use of Cu/CuOx instead of Pt allow one to design a highly efficient photocatalyst for CO2 transformation shifting the working range to the visible light (425 nm). Cu/CuOx/TiO2 (calcined at 700 °C) shows a rate of CH4 formation of 1.2 ± 0.1 µmol h−1 g−1 and an overall CO2 reduction rate of 11 ± 1 µmol h−1 g−1 (at 425 nm).

Abstract
In order to recover the damaged structure of a nitrogen-implanted TiO2 (N-I-TiO2) photoanode, hybrid microwave annealing (HMA) is proposed as an alternative postannealing process instead of conventional thermal annealing (CTA). Compared to CTA, HMA provides distinctive advantages: (i) facile transformation of the interstitial N-N states into substitutional N-Ti states, (ii) better preservation of the ion-implanted nitrogen in TiO2, and (iii) effective alleviation of lattice strain and reconstruction of the broken bonds. As a result, the HMA-activated photoanode improves the photocurrent density by a factor of ∼3.2 from 0.29 to 0.93 mA cm-2 at 1.23 VRHE and the incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) from ∼2.9% to ∼10.5% at 430 nm relative to those of the as-prepared N-I-TiO2 photoanode in photoelectrochemical water oxidation, which are much better than those of the CTA-activated photoanode (0.58 mA cm-2 at 1.23 VRHE and IPCE of 5.7% at 430 nm), especially in the visible light region (≥420 nm).

Abstract
Nitrogen-doped TiO2 (N/TiO2) photocatalyst nanoparticles were derived by the environmentally friendly and cost-effective microwave-assisted synthesis method. The samples were prepared at different reaction parameters (temperature and time) and precursor ratio (amount of nitrogen source; urea). The obtained materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy (RS), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), electron microscopy (SEM-EDS), and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms. Two cycles of optimizations were conducted to determine the best reaction temperature and time, as well as N content. The phase composition for all N/TiO2 nanomaterials was identified as photoactive anatase. The reaction temperature was found to be the most relevant parameter for the course of the structural evolution of the samples. The nitrogen content was the least relevant for the development of the particle morphology, but it was important for photocatalytic performance. The photocatalytic activity of N/TiO2 nanoparticle aqueous suspensions was evaluated by the degradation of antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CIP) under different irradiation spectra: ultraviolet A light (UVA), simulated solar light, and visible light. As expected, all prepared samples demonstrated efficient CIP degradation. For all irradiation sources, increasing synthesis temperature and increasing nitrogen content further improved the degradation efficiencies.

Abstract
Porous boron nitride (BN), a combination of hexagonal, turbostratic and amorphous BN, has emerged as a new platform photocatalyst. Yet, this material lacks photoactivity under visible light. Theoretical studies predict that tuning the oxygen content in oxygen‐doped BN (BNO) could lower the band gap. This is yet to be verified experimentally. We present herein a systematic experimental route to simultaneously tune BNO's chemical, magnetic and optoelectronic properties using a multivariate synthesis parameter space. We report deep visible range band gaps (1.50–2.90 eV) and tuning of the oxygen (2–14 at.%) and specific paramagnetic OB3 contents (7–294 a.u. g−1). Through designing a response surface via a design of experiments (DOE) process, we have identified synthesis parameters influencing BNO's chemical, magnetic and optoelectronic properties. We also present model prediction equations relating these properties to the synthesis parameter space that we have validated experimentally. This methodology can help tailor and optimise BN materials for heterogeneous photocatalysis.

Abstract
Fe3+-TiO2 (Fe-TiO2) thin films were successfully prepared using a "sandwich" approach. TiO2 NPs were doped with different Fe3+ content (0.05%, 0.1%, 0.2% molar ratio), and the modified TiO2 NPs were deposited on glass flat support by dip coating.Structural, morphological, optical, and photocatalytic properties of Fe-TiO2 thin films were studied. XPS spectra confirm the presence of Ti, Fe, O, and defective -OH groups at the material surface. The Fe 2p spectrum demonstrates the existence of Fe3+. SEM images indicate that the incorporation of Fe3+ deforms in some degree the homogeneity of the TiO2 system. Additionally, incorporation of Fe3+ ions to the network creates an impurity band near the VB due to the oxygen vacancies, resulting in the reduction of the effective optical band gap. Photocatalytic activity of fabricated thin films in the elimination of sulfamethoxazole (SMT) follows pseudo first-order kinetics. The highest SMT removal yields were achieved using the sample with 0.05%Fe. Additionally, the use of greater thicknesses improves the removal performance. However, material detachment limits the maximum usable value around 6 µm.Finally, stability and reusability of catalysts were confirmed studying the photocatalytic activity over three cycles and evaluating that no Fe3+ leaching occurred.

Abstract
The visible active N-doped TiO2/ZnFe2O4 (urea-TiO2/ZnFe2O4) and CN-codoped TiO2/ZnFe2O4 (L-asparagine-TiO2/ZnFe2O4) nanocomposites were successfully synthesized by the sol-gel-hydrothermal method for direct red 16 (DR16) photodegradation. Their properties of the prepared nanocomposites were analysed using XRD, FT-IR, FE-SEM, EDX, DRS and PL tests. The DRS and PL results confirmed a narrow band-gap energy and low recombination rate of photo-produced electron and hole pairs, respectively. The effect of adding various dopant agents (urea and L-asparagine) with different loadings and magnetic nanoparticle (ZnFe2O4) into TiO2 sol on the photodegradation of DR16 was also evaluated. As a result, the L-asparagine (2 wt. %)-TiO2/ZnFe2O4 is the best photocatalyst compared to the other modified TiO2 nanocomposites due to its narrow band gap and high quantum efficiency. The catalyst concentration (1-2 g/L), DR16 concentration (25-45 ppm), initial pH (4-10), and irradiation time (30-90 min) as numerical variables were also considered for photocatalytic process analysis and moulding by central composite design (CCD). The increase in the pH and dye concentration reduces the photodegradation efficiency while irradiation time and catalyst concentration effectively improved its photodegradation efficiency. The DR16 was completely removed at 25 ppm of DR16, initial pH of 4 and 1.5 g/L of photocatalyst after 90-min irradiation. The photoactivity test was also repeated four times by reused L-asparagine-TiO2/ZnFe2O4 photocatalyst at optimum conditions. The decrease of dye degradation and loss of photocatalyst were not significant which was approved by the good performance and high recovery capability of the prepared nanocomposite.

Abstract
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), one of the most important gaseous air pollutants, are getting more and more attention, and a lot of technologies have been studied and applied to eliminate VOCs emissions. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are considered as one of the most promising techniques used for the degradation of VOCs. Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) catalytic oxidation system is a typical composite AOPs system involving several processes such as VUV photodegradation, photocatalytic oxidation (PCO), ozone catalytic oxidation (OZCO) and their combinations. VUV based catalytic oxidation processes have been intensively studied for degrading VOCs. This review summarizes the recent studies on the use of VUV catalytic oxidation for degrading VOCs. All the processes involved in VUV catalytic oxidation and their combinations have been reviewed. Studies of VOCs degradation by VUV catalytic oxidation can be generally divided into two aspects: developments of catalysts and mechanistic studies. Principles of different processes, strategies of catalyst development and reaction mechanism are summarized in this review. Two directions of prospective future work were also proposed.

Abstract
The possibility of performing quantum-chemical calculations using quantum computers has attracted much interest. Variational quantum deflation (VQD) is a quantum-classical hybrid algorithm for the calculation of excited states with noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices. Although the validity of this method has been demonstrated, there have been few practical applications, primarily because of the uncertain effect of calculation conditions on the results. In the present study, calculations of the core-excited and core-ionized states for common molecules based on the VQD method were examined using a classical computer, focusing on the effects of the weighting coefficients applied in the penalty terms of the cost function. Adopting a simplified procedure for estimating the weighting coefficients based on molecular orbital levels allowed these core-level states to be successfully calculated. The O 1s core-ionized state for a water molecule was calculated with various weighting coefficients, and the resulting ansatz states were systematically examined. The application of this technique to functional materials was demonstrated by calculating the core-level states for titanium dioxide (TiO2) and nitrogen-doped TiO2 models. The results demonstrate that VQD calculations employing an appropriate cost function can be applied to the analysis of functional materials in conjunction with an experimental approach.

Abstract
Nowadays, water pollution is one of the most dangerous environmental problems in the world. The presence of the so-called emerging pollutants in the different water bodies, impossible to eliminate through conventional biological and physical treatments used in wastewater treatment plants due to their persistent and recalcitrant nature, means that pollution continues growing throughout the world. The presence of these emerging pollutants involves serious risks to human and animal health for aquatic and terrestrial organisms. Therefore, in recent years, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been postulated as a viable, innovative and efficient technology for the elimination of these types of compounds from water bodies. The oxidation/reduction reactions triggered in most of these processes require a suitable catalyst. The most recent research focuses on the use and development of different types of heterogeneous catalysts, which are capable of overcoming some of the operational limitations of homogeneous processes such as the generation of metallic sludge, difficult separation of treated water and narrow working pH. This review details the current advances in the field of heterogeneous AOPs, Fenton processes and photocatalysts for the removal of different types of emerging pollutants.

Abstract
Intensive research has been focused on the synthesis of N-modified TiO2 materials having visible light absorption in order to get higher solar photocatalytic degradation rates of pollutants in water. However, an exhaustive revision of the topic underlines several controversial issues related to N-modified TiO2 materials; these issues concern (a) the methodology used for preparation, (b) the assessment of the structural characteristics, (c) the mechanistic action modes and (d) the raisons argued to explain the limited performances of the prepared materials for organic and biological targets photodegradation in water. Taking advantage of last year's progress in analytical chemistry and in material characterization methods, the authors show, for example, that some works in the literature controversially attribute the term nitrogen doping without enough analytical evidence. Additionally, some papers describe N-modified TiO2 photocatalysts as being able to generate holes with enough oxidative potential to form hydroxyl radicals under visible light. This last assertion often derives from a no pertinent use of illumination sources, light filters, or targets or a limited understanding of the thermodynamic aspects of the studied systems. None of N-containing materials prepared by herein presented methods leads, under solar light, to a significant enhancement in pollutants degradation and microorganism's inactivation kinetics.

Abstract
Semiconductor photocatalysis has long been regarded as a potential solution to tackle the energy and environmental challenges since the first discovery of water splitting by TiO2 almost 50 years ago. The past few years have seen a tremendous flurry of research interest in the modification of semiconductors because of their shortcomings in the aspects of solar harvesting, electron-hole pairs separation, and utilization of photogenerated carriers. Among the various strategies, the introduction of metallic copper into the photocatalysis system can not only enhance the absorption of sunlight and the separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons and holes, but also increase the adsorption ability of substrate and the number of active sites, so as to realize the high solar to chemical energy conversion efficiency. This review focuses on the rational design of copper-based composites and their applications in photoredox catalysis. First, the preparation methods of metallic copper-containing composites are discussed. Then, the applications of different types of copper-based composites in the photocatalytic removal of pollutants, splitting of water to hydrogen production, reduction of carbon dioxide, and conversion of organic matter are introduced. Finally, the opportunities and challenges in the design and synthesis of copper-based composites and their applications in the photocatalysis are prospected.

Centimetre-scale perovskite solar cells with fill factors of more than 86 per cent. Nature 2022; 601:573-578. Abstract
Owing to rapid development in their efficiency1 and stability2, perovskite solar cells are at the forefront of emerging photovoltaic technologies. State-of-the-art cells exhibit voltage losses3-8 approaching the theoretical minimum and near-unity internal quantum efficiency9-13, but conversion efficiencies are limited by the fill factor (<83%, below the Shockley-Queisser limit of approximately 90%). This limitation results from non-ideal charge transport between the perovskite absorber and the cell's electrodes5,8,13-16. Reducing the electrical series resistance of charge transport layers is therefore crucial for improving efficiency. Here we introduce a reverse-doping process to fabricate nitrogen-doped titanium oxide electron transport layers with outstanding charge transport performance. By incorporating this charge transport material into perovskite solar cells, we demonstrate 1-cm2 cells with fill factors of >86%, and an average fill factor of 85.3%. We also report a certified steady-state efficiency of 22.6% for a 1-cm2 cell (23.33% ± 0.58% from a reverse current-voltage scan).

Abstract
Controlling of morphology from nanoparticles to magnetic nanotubes and hollow nanorods are interesting for developing the photo-active materials and their applications in the field of photocatalysis and decontamination of aquatic effluents. In the current study, titanium dioxide nanoparticles and nanocomposites were prepared by different techniques to produce various morphologies. The nanoparticles of pure titanium dioxide were prepared by sol-gel technique. Magnetic nanotubes and hollow nanorods were prepared by combining titanium with di- and tri-valent iron through two stages: urea hydrolysis and solvent thermal technique. According to the Kirkendall effect, magnetic nanotubes were fabricated by unequal diffusion of Fe2+, Fe3+ and Ti4+ inside the nanocomposite to produce maghemite-titanian phase. In the same trend, hollow nanorods were synthesized by limited diffusion of both trivalent iron and tetravalent titanium producing amorphous structure of titanium iron oxides. The magnetic and optical properties showed that these nanotubes and hollow nanorods are magnetically active and optically more effective compared with titanium dioxide nanoparticles. Therefore, the Naphthol green B dye completely disappeared after 45 min of UV light irradiation in presence of the hollow nanorods. The kinetic study confirmed the high performance of the hollow nanorods for the photocatalytic degradation of Naphthol green B compared with titanium dioxide nanoparticles.

Abstract
The development of active and stable photocatalysts for the degradation of volatile organic compounds under visible light is important for efficient light utilization and environmental protection. Titanium dioxide doped with nitrogen is known to have a high activity but it exhibits a relatively low stability due to a gradual degradation of nitrogen species under highly powerful radiation. In this paper, we show that the combination of N-doped TiO2 with bismuth tungstate prevents its degradation during the photocatalytic process and results in a very stable composite photocatalyst. The synthesis of Bi2WO6-TiO2-N composites is preformed through the hydrothermal treatment of an aqueous medium containing nanocrystalline N-doped TiO2, as well as bismuth (III) nitrate and sodium tungstate followed by drying in air. The effect of the molar ratio between the components on their characteristics and photocatalytic activity is discussed. In addition to an enhanced stability, the composite photocatalysts with a low content of Bi2WO6 also exhibit an enhanced activity that is substantially higher than the activity of individual TiO2-N and Bi2WO6 materials. Thus, the Bi2WO6-TiO2-N composite has the potential as an active and stable photocatalyst for efficient purification of air.

Abstract
The feasibility of preparing TiO2/g-CN heterojunction from Ti-incorporated dried dye wastewater sludge is explored in this study. Two reaction routes of composite formation were evaluated. In the initial approach, one-step calcination of dried sludge and melamine mixture @600 °C was carried out. Detailed morphological and chemical characterizations showed that the one-step calcination route did not create TiO2/g-CN composites; instead, only N-doped anatase TiO2 composites were formed. Moreover, due to the non-uniform composition of organic content in the dried sludge, it was not easy to control the N doping level by varying melamine content (0-100%) in the precursor mix. However, successful formation of anatase TiO2 and g-CN was observed when a two-step calcination route was followed, i.e., via synthesis of anatase TiO2 from dried sludge, and later development of heterojunction by calcining (@550 °C) the TiO2 and melamine mixture. X-ray diffraction along with infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy verified the effective heterojunction. In addition, maximum atmospheric NO removal under UV and visible light were observed for the prepared composite when the melamine content in the precursor mixture was 70%. After 1 h of UV and visible light irradiation, the best TiO2/g-CN composite removed 25.71% and 13.50% of NO, respectively. Optical characterization suggested that the enhanced NO oxidation under UV/visible light was due to the bandgap narrowing and diminished photogenerated electron-hole recombination.

Abstract
Doping with noble metal ions or doping with nitrogen has been attempted to prepare TiO2 that reacts even in visible light. In this study, TiO2 was doped with nitrogen and various metal ions instead of noble metals. The TiO2 photocatalysts doped with metal ions (Fe, Ag, Ni) and nitrogen were prepared by a sol-gel method. Their physicochemical properties were characterized and their photocatalytic activities were investigated under visible light irradiation. In TiO2 doped with metal ions and nitrogen, the light absorption region was extended to visible light. The photoluminescence intensity was much greater in N/Ni/TiO2 than in N/Ag/TiO2 and N/Fe/TiO2. The photolysis activities of N/Ni/TiO2 were the highest in formaldehyde decomposition and methylene blue decomposition. The sterilization efficiency of N/Ni/TiO2 was the highest in the evaluation test for the inhibition of the proliferation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The bandgap of N/Ni/TiO2 was 2.4 eV, which was significantly lower than that of anatase TiO2 (3.2 eV). The N/Ni/TiO2 had a much higher optical intensity than other metal ion-doped TiO2, so it was highly active under visible light irradiation.

Abstract
Green synthesis of metal nanoparticles has been gaining great interest due to the increasing need for eco-friendly manufacturing and application of nanomaterials. Metal nanoparticles, especially silver nanoparticles, are widely used in water treatments and as environmental remedy. Here we present a method to synthesize silver nanoparticles at room temperature using green tea extract under visible light irradiation, along with an application for enhanced photocatalytic degradation on methylene blue (MB) dye. Ag nanoparticles were synthesized under different photoreduction times and then further characterized. The photocatalytic rate of synthesized nanoparticles was also investigated and compared with TiO2 nanowires under UV and visible light irradiations. The results showed that Ag nanoparticles can directly degrade MB dye through plasmonic excitation and electron transferring under visible light, and Ag nanoparticles can further enhance TiO2 photonic degradation by enhanced e-h separation with UV and/or a wide band light, including UV light. Ag nanoparticles under visible light photoreduction for 0.5 h presented better behavior for two kinds of plasmonic enhanced photodegradation; the average size of the nanoparticles is about 30 nm. Therefore, the green synthesized Ag nanoparticles exhibit promising prospects in chemical and biological pollutant treatment.
