Abstract
The chemistry of coinage metal ions with Fe(CO)5, [Mn(CO)5]- and [Fe(CO)4CN]- has been explored using Mes3P and N-heterocyclic carbene supporting ligands. A comparison of [(SIPr)Au-Fe(CO)5][SbF6], [(Et2CAAC)Au-Fe(CO)5][SbF6] and [(Mes3P)Au-Fe(CO)5][SbF6] shows that the ligand donor strength towards Au(i) follows the order Mes3P > Et2CAAC > SIPr. These Fe(CO)5 complexes show significant blue shifts in [small nu, Greek, macron]CO bands relative to those observed for free Fe(CO)5 as a result of it serving as a net electron donor to Au(i). Au(i) is a much stronger acceptor in (SIPr)Au-Mn(CO)5 compared to Ag(i) in (SIPr)Ag-Mn(CO)5. The structural details of Mes3PAu-Mn(CO)5 are also presented. [Fe(CO)4CN]- afforded CN bridged coinage metal complexes with (IPr*)Au+, (SIPr)Ag+ and (SIPr)Cu+ moieties, rather than molecules with direct Fe/coinage metal bonds. The computed total interaction energies indicate that both [Mn(CO)5]- and [Fe(CO)4CN]- are stronger donors toward Au(i) than Fe(CO)5. A detailed analysis of the bonding interactions between the coinage metal ions and Fe(CO)5, [Mn(CO)5]- and [Fe(CO)4CN]- suggests that the largest contribution comes from electrostatic attraction, while the covalent component follows the Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson model. The σ-donor interactions of these organometallic ligands with coinage metal ions are considerably stronger than the π-backbonding from the coinage metal ions.

Abstract
![]()
Selective
direct ruthenium-catalyzed semihydrogenation of diaryl
alkynes to the corresponding E-alkenes has been achieved
using alcohols as the hydrogen source. The method employs a simple
ruthenium catalyst, does not require external ligands, and affords
the desired products in > 99% NMR yield in most cases (up to 93%
isolated
yield). Best results were obtained using benzyl alcohol as the hydrogen
donor, although biorenewable alcohols such as furfuryl alcohol could
also be applied. In addition, tandem semihydrogenation–alkylation
reactions were demonstrated, with potential applications in the synthesis
of resveratrol derivatives.

Abstract
An efficient cobalt-catalyzed Z to E isomerization of β-substituted styrenes using the amido-diphosphine ligand was developed, delivering the (E)-isomers with good functional tolerance and high stereoselectivity. The reaction could be scaled up to gram-scale with a catalyst loading of 0.1 mol %, using a mixture of (Z)- and (E)-alkene as the starting material. Preliminary mechanistic studies indicated that cobalt(I)-hydride and a benzylic-cobalt species were probably involved in the reaction, as supported by experiments and DFT calculations.

Abstract
NiGa is a catalyst for the semihydrogenation of alkynes. Here we show the influence of different dispersion times before microwave-induced decomposition of the precursors on the phase purity, as well as the influence of the time of microwave-induced decomposition on the crystallinity of the NiGa nanoparticles. Microwave-induced co-decomposition of all-hydrocarbon precursors [Ni(COD)2] (COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) and GaCp* (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) in the ionic liquid [BMIm][NTf2] selectively yields small intermetallic Ni/Ga nanocrystals of 5 ± 1 nm as derived from transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) and supported by energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX), selected-area energy diffraction (SAED) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). NiGa@[BMIm][NTf2] catalyze the semihydrogenation of 4-octyne to 4-octene with 100% selectivity towards (E)-4-octene over five runs, but with poor conversion values. IL-free, precipitated NiGa nanoparticles achieve conversion values of over 90% and selectivity of 100% towards alkene over three runs.

Abstract
A convenient protocol for stereodivergent hydrogenation of alkynes to E- and Z-alkenes by using nickel catalysts was developed. Simple Ni(NO3 )2 ⋅6 H2 O as a catalyst precursor formed active nanoparticles, which were effective for the semihydrogenation of several alkynes with high selectivity for the Z-alkene (Z/E>99:1). Upon addition of specific multidentate ligands (triphos, tetraphos), the resulting molecular catalysts were highly selective for the E-alkene products (E/Z>99:1). Mechanistic studies revealed that the Z-alkene-selective catalyst was heterogeneous whereas the E-alkene-selective catalyst was homogeneous. In the latter case, the alkyne was first hydrogenated to a Z-alkene, which was subsequently isomerized to the E-alkene. This proposal was supported by density functional theory calculations. This synthetic methodology was shown to be generally applicable in >40 examples and scalable to multigram-scale experiments.

Abstract
Promoters are ubiquitous in industrial heterogeneous catalysts. The wider roles of promoters in accelerating catalysis and/or controlling selectivity are, however, not well understood. A model system has been developed where a heterobimetallic active site comprising an active metal (Rh) and a promoter ion (Ga) is preassembled and delivered onto a metal-organic framework (MOF) support, NU-1000. The Rh-Ga sites in NU-1000 selectively catalyze the hydrogenation of acyclic alkynes to E-alkenes. The overall stereoselectivity is complementary to the well-known Lindlar's catalyst, which generates Z-alkenes. The role of the Ga in promoting this unusual selectivity is evidenced by the lack of semihydrogenation selectivity when Ga is absent and only Rh is present in the active site.

Abstract
Abstract
Homogeneously catalyzed hydrogenation/dehydrogenation reactions represent not only one of the most synthetically important chemical transformations, but also a promising way to renewably utilize the hydrogen energy. In order to rationally design efficient homogeneous catalysts for hydrogenations/dehydrogenations, it is of fundamental importance to understand their reaction mechanisms in detail. With this aim in mind, we herein provide a brief overview of the mechanistic understanding and related catalyst design strategies. Hydrogenations and dehydrogenations represent the reverse process of each other, and involve the activation/release of H2 and the insertion/elimination of hydride as major steps. The mechanisms discussed in this chapter include the cooperation (bifunctional) mechanism and the non-cooperation mechanisms. Non-cooperation mechanisms usually involve single-site transition metal (TM) catalysts or transition metal hydride (TM-H) catalysts. Cooperation mechanisms usually operate in the state-of-the-art bifunctional catalysts, including Lewis-base/transition-metal (LB-TM) catalysts, Lewis-acid/transition-metal (LA-TM) catalysts, Lewis-acid/Lewis-base (LA-LB; the so-called frustrated Lewis pairs - FLPs) catalysts, newly developed ambiphilic catalysts, and bimetallic transition-metal/transition-metal (TM-TM) catalysts. The influence of the ligands, the electronic structure of the metal, and proton shuttle on the reaction mechanism are also discussed to improve the understanding of the factors that can govern mechanistic preferences. The content presented in this chapter should both inspire experimental and theoretical chemists concerned with homogeneously catalyzed hydrogenation and dehydrogenation reactions, and provide valuable information for future catalyst design.

Abstract
A diastereodivergent hydroarylation of terminal alkynes is accomplished using tandem catalysis. The hydroarylation allows highly selective synthesis of both E and Z diastereoisomers of aryl alkenes, from the same set of starting materials, using the same combination of palladium and copper catalysts. The selectivity is controlled by simple changes in the stoichiometry of the alcohol additive. The hydroarylation has excellent substrate scope and can be accomplished in the presence of various classes of compounds, including esters, nitriles, alkyl halides, epoxides, carbamates, acetals, ethers, silyl ethers, and thioethers. The Z-selective hydroarylation is accomplished using a new approach based on tandem Sonogashira coupling and catalytic semireduction. The E-selective hydroarylation involves an additional catalytic isomerization of the Z-alkene. Our explorations of the reaction mechanism explain the role of individual reaction components and how the subtle changes in the reaction conditions influence the rates of specific steps of the hydroarylation. Our studies also show that, although the Z- and E-selective hydroarylation reactions are mechanistically closely related, the roles of the palladium and copper catalysts in the two reactions are different.

Abstract
In this work, we introduce a novel approach for the selective assembly of heterometallic complexes by unprecedented coordination of coinage metal cations to strained single ruthenium-boron bonds on a surface of icosahedral boron clusters. M(i) cations (M = Cu, Ag, and Au) insert into B-Ru bonds of the (BB)-carboryne complex of ruthenium with the formation of four-membered B-M-Ru-B metalacycles. Results of theoretical calculations suggest that bonding within these metalacycles can be best described as unusual three-center-two-electron B-M···Ru interactions that are isolobal to B-H···Ru borane coordination for M = Cu and Ag, or the pairs of two-center-two electron B-Au and Au-Ru interactions for M = Au. These transformations comprise the first synthetic route to exohedral coinage metal boryl complexes of icosahedral closo-{C2B10} clusters, which feature short Cu-B (2.029(2) Å) and Ag-B (2.182(3) Å) bonds and the shortest Au-B bond (2.027(2) Å) reported to date. The reported heterometallic complexes contain Cu(i) and Au(i) centers in uncharacteristic square-planar coordination environments. These findings pave the way to rational construction of a broader class of multimetallic architectures featuring M-B bonds.

Abstract
A novel protocol for microwave-assisted alkyne semi-hydrogenation under heterogeneous catalysis in a continuous flow reactor is reported herein. This challenging task has been accomplished using a multifaceted strategy which includes the ultrasound-assisted preparation of Pd nanoparticles (average Ø 3.0 ± 0.5 nm) that were synthesized on the μ-metric pores of sintered alumina spheres (Ø 0.8 mm) and a continuous flow reaction under H2 (flow rate 7.5 mL min-1) in a microwave reactor (counter-pressure 4.5 bar). The semi-hydrogenation of 2-butyne-1,4-diol in ethanol was chosen as a model reaction for the purposes of optimization. The high catalyst efficiency of the process, in spite of the low Pd loading (Pd content 111.15 mg kg-1 from ICP-MS), is due to the pivotal role of ultrasound in generating a regular distribution of Pd nanoparticles across the entire support surface. Ultrasound promotes the nucleation, rather than the growth, of crystalline Pd nanoparticles and does so within a particularly narrow Gaussian size distribution. High conversion (>90.5%) and selectivity to (Z)-2-butene-1,4-diol (95.20%) have been achieved at an alkyne solution flow rate of 10 mL min-1. The lead-free, alumina-stabilized Pd catalyst was fully characterized by TEM, HR-TEM, EDX, IR, XRPD and AAS. Highly dispersed Pd nanoparticles have proven themselves to be stable under the reaction conditions employed. The application of the method is subject to the dielectric properties of substrates and solvents, and is therefore hardly applicable to apolar alkynes. Considering the small volume of the reaction chamber, microwave-assisted flow hydrogenation has proven itself to be a safe procedure and one that is suitable for further scaling up to industrial application.

Abstract
A new representative of an unusual family of metallagermaniumsesquioxanes, namely the heterometallic cagelike phenylgermsesquioxane (PhGeO2)12Cu2Fe5(O)OH(PhGe)2O5(bipy)2 (2), was synthesized and structurally characterized. Fe(III) ions of the complex are coordinated by oxa ligands: (i) cyclic (PhGeO2)12 and acyclic (Ph2Ge2O5) germoxanolates and (ii) O2- and (iii) HO- moieties. In turn, Cu(II) ions are coordinated by both oxa (germoxanolates) and aza ligands (2,2'-bipyridines). This "hetero-type" of ligation gives in sum an attractive pagoda-like molecular architecture of the complex 2. Product 2 showed a high catalytic activity in the oxidation of alkanes to the corresponding alkyl hydroperoxides (in yields up to 30%) and alcohols (in yields up to 100%) and in the oxidative formation of benzamides from alcohols (catalyst loading down to 0.4 mol % in Cu/Fe).

Abstract
Iron(0) pentacarbonyl complexes of gold(I), [Mes3 PAu-Fe(CO)5 ][SbF6 ] (1) and [(IPr*)Au-Fe(CO)5 ][SbF6 ] (2) (Mes=2,4,6-trimethylphenyl; IPr*=1,3-bis(2,6-bis(diphenylmethyl)-4-methylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene) have been synthesized using Mes3 PAuCl and (IPr*)AuCl as the gold(I) precursor, AgSbF6 halide ion abstractor, and the Lewis base Fe(CO)5 . The Au-Fe bond lengths of these metal-only Lewis pair complexes are significantly shorter than the sum of the experimentally derived covalent radii of Au and Fe. The v̄(CO) bands of the molecules show a notable blueshift relative to those observed for free Fe(CO)5 , indicating a substantial reduction in Fe→CO backbonding upon its coordination to gold(I) with either Mes3 P or IPr* supporting ligands (L). The analysis of the electronic structure with quantum chemical method suggests that the Au-Fe bond consists mainly of [LAu]+ ←Fe(CO)5 σ-donation and weaker [LAu]+ →Fe(CO)5 π-backdonation. The donor strength of Fe(CO)5 is similar to that of CO.
