Adsorptive separation of picoline isomers by adaptive calix[3]acridan crystals

The exploration of macrocycle-based nonporous adaptive crystals (NACs) for adsorption and separation has been one of the hotspots in supramolecular chemistry and crystal engineering. Herein, we developed calix[3]acridan-based NACs to separate industrially important 4-picoline from its isomer mixtures with over 93.8% purity.

Performance and selectivity of amphiphilic pillar[5]arene as stationary phase for capillary gas chromatography

Pillar[n]arenes possess highly symmetrical and rigid pillar-shaped architecture with π-electron rich cavity that afford their reliable host-guest recognition interactions towards matched guests. In this work, a novel amphiphilic pillar[5]arene (P5A-C10-2NH₂) was designed, synthesized and employed as the stationary phase for capillary gas chromatography. To date, they have not been reported in the field of chromatography. The P5A-C10-2NH₂ capillary column (10 m × 0.25 mm i.d.) was prepared by static coating method. Its capillary column exhibited moderate polarity and column efficiency of 2265 plates/m determined by naphthalene at 120 °C. As evidenced, the P5A-C10-2NH₂ column achieved advantageous separation performance for a mixture of 24 analytes of diverse types and exhibited different chromatographic selectivity from two pillar[5]arene derivatives columns and commercial HP-35 column with 35%-phenyl-methylpolysiloxane. Moreover, the P5A-C10-2NH₂ column baseline resolved more than a dozen positional and cis-trans isomers. Furthermore, the separation mechanism of P5A-C10-2NH₂ column was discussed by quantum chemical calculations. In addition, the P5A-C10-2NH₂ column had high thermal stability and excellent separation repeatability 0.01-0.04% for run-to-run, 0.03-0.17% for day-to-day and 3.2-3.9% for column-to-column. The special amphiphilic structure and high resolution for various analytes reveal the good potential of pillararenes as a new class of stationary phases for chromatographic analyses. Moreover, the TPG column achieved improved thermal stability over the GIL column and excellent repeatability.

Inorganic-Organic Hybrid Membrane Based on Pillararene-Intercalated MXene Nanosheets for Efficient Water Purification

Discharge of antibiotic-containing wastewater causes environmental pollution and threatens biological and human health. An efficient treatment method for this wastewater is urgently required. We prepared inorganic-organic hybrid MXene-pillararene nanosheets with a large lateral size (5-8 μm). The hybrid nanosheets were stacked on supports via vacuum-assisted filtration to prepare membranes with regular parallel slits and an interlayer spacing of 1.36 nm, which were used to purify antibiotic-containing water. Permeance through the membrane increased 100-fold compared with most polymeric and other two-dimensional nanofiltration membranes with similar rejection. This high permeance and rejection was attributed to the large lateral size of the nanosheets, regular interlayer spacing, and electrostatic interaction between the membrane and antibiotics. These membranes will broaden the applications of lamellar materials for the separation of high-value-added drugs in academia and industry.

Pillar[3]trianglamines: deeper cavity triangular macrocycles for selective hexene isomer separation

The separation of α-olefins and their corresponding isomers continues to be a big challenge for the chemical industry due to their overlapping physical properties and low relative volatility. Herein, pillar[3]trianglamine (P-TA) macrocycles were synthesized for the molecular-sieving-like separation of 1-hexene (1-He) selectively over its positional isomer trans-3-hexene (trans-3-He) in the vapor and liquid state. This allyl-functionalized macrocycle features a deeper cavity compared to the previously reported trianglamine host molecules. Solid-vapor sorption experiments verified the successful separation of 1-He from an equimolar mixture of 1-He and trans-3-He. Single-crystal structures and powder X-ray diffraction patterns suggest that this selective adsorption arises from the formation of a thermodynamically stable host-guest complex between 1-He and P-TA. A reversible transformation between the nonporous guest-free structure and the guest-containing structure shows that 1-He separation can be carried out over multiple cycles without any loss of performance. Significantly, P-TA can separate 1-He directly from a liquid isomeric mixture and thus P-TA modified silica sieves (SBA-15) showed the ability to selectively separate 1-He when utilized as a stationary phase in column chromatography. This capitalizes on the prospects of employing macrocyclic hosts as molecular recognition units in real-life separations for sustainable and energy-efficient industrial practices.

Simultaneous Organic and Inorganic Host‐Guest Chemistry within Pillararene‐Protein Cage Frameworks

Supramolecular self‐assembly of biomolecules provides a powerful bottom‐up strategy to build functional nanostructures and materials. Among the different biomacromolecules, protein cages offer various advantages including uniform size, versatility, multi‐modularity, and high stability. Additionally, protein cage crystals present confined microenvironments with well‐defined dimensions. On the other hand, molecular hosts, such as cyclophanes, possess a defined cavity size and selective recognition of guest molecules. However, the successful combination of macrocycles and protein cages to achieve functional co‐crystals has remained limited. In this study, we demonstrate electrostatic binding between cationic pillar[5]arenes and (apo)ferritin cages that results in porous and crystalline frameworks. The electrostatically assembled crystals present a face‐centered cubic (FCC) lattice and have been characterized by means of small‐angle X‐ray scattering and cryo‐TEM. These hierarchical structures result in a multiadsorbent framework capable of hosting both organic and inorganic pollutants, such as dyes and toxic metals, with potential application in water‐remediation technologies.

An Adaptive Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework for the Exclusive Recognition of p-Xylene

Separation of xylene isomers is one of the most important but most challenging and energy-intensive separation processes in the petrochemical industry. Here, we report an adaptive hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF-29) constructed from a porphyrin based organic building block 4,4',4'',4'''-(porphyrin-5,10,15,20-tetrayl) tetrabenzonitrile (PTTBN), exhibiting the exclusive molecular recognition of p-xylene (pX) over its isomers of o-xylene (oX) and m-xylene (mX), as clearly demonstrated in the single crystal structure transformation and ¹ H NMR studies. Single crystal structure studies show that single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation from the as-synthesized HOF-29 to the pX exclusively included HOF-29⊃pX is triggered by the encapsulation of pX molecules, accompanied by sliding of the 2D layers and local distortion of the ligand, which provides multiple C-H⋅⋅⋅π interactions.

Selective Extraction, Recovery, and Sensing of Hydroquinone Mediated by a Supramolecular Pillar[5]quinone Quinhydrone Charge-Transfer Complex

Intermolecular interactions between an electron-rich aromatic hydroquinone (HQ) with its electron deficient counterpart, benzoquinone (BQ), result in the formation of a quinhydrone charge-transfer complex. Herein, we report a novel quinhydrone-type complex between pillar[5]quinone (P[5]Q) and HQ. Characterized by a suite of spectroscopic techniques including ¹H NMR, UV-visible, and FTIR together with PXRD, SEM, BET, CV, and DFT modeling studies, the stability of the complex is determined to be due to an electron-proton transfer reaction coupled with a complementary donor-acceptor interaction. The selectivity of P[5]Q toward HQ over other dihydroxybenzene isomers allows for not only the naked-eye detection of HQ but also its selective liquid-liquid extraction and recovery from aqueous media.

GOx-assisted synthesis of pillar[5]arene based supramolecular polymeric nanoparticles for targeted/synergistic chemo-chemodynamic cancer therapy

Background

Cancer is the most serious world's health problems on the global level and various strategies have been developed for cancer therapy. Pillar[5]arene-based supramolecular therapeutic nano-platform (SP/GOx NPs) was constructed successfully via orthogonal dynamic covalent bonds and intermolecular H-bonds with the assistance of glucose oxidase (GOx) and exhibited efficient targeted/synergistic chemo-chemodynamic cancer therapy.

Methods

The morphology of SP/GOx NPs was characterized by DLS, TEM, SEM and EDS mapping. The cancer therapy efficinecy was investigated both in vivo and in vitro.

Results

SP/GOx NPs can load drug molecules (Dox) and modify target molecule (FA-Py) on its surface conveniently. When the resultant FA-Py/SP/GOx/Dox NPs enters blood circulation, FA-Py will target it to cancer cells efficiently, where GOx can catalyst the overexpressed glucose to generate H₂O₂. Subsequently, the generated H₂O₂ in cancer cells catalyzed by ferrocene unit to form •OH, which can kill cancer cells. Furthermore, the loaded Dox molecules released under acid microenvironment, which can further achieve chemo-therapy.

Conclusion

All the experiments showed that the excellent antitumor performance of FA-Py/SP/GOx/Dox NPs, which provided an new method for pillar[5]arene-based supramolecular polymer for biomedical applications.

Chromogenic detection of xylene isomers and luminogenic chemosensing of o-xylene employing a new macrocyclic cobalt complex: synthesis, and X-ray crystallographic, spectroscopic and computational studies

A new binuclear Co(ii) complex, coordinating via two pyridine side-arms linked to two dinaphtho-diazacrown ether macrocyclic ligands, was synthesized and used as a colourimetric and fluorogenic sensor as well as an oxidation catalyst of xylene isomers at room temperature.

Bottom-Up Solid-State Molecular Assembly via Guest-Induced Intermolecular Interactions

The manipulation of molecular motions to construct highly ordered supramolecular architectures from chaos in the solid state is considered to be far more complex and challenging in comparison to that in solution. In this work, a bottom-up molecular assembly approach based on a newly designed skeleton-trimmed pillar[5]arene analogue, namely the permethylated leggero pillar[5]arene MeP[5]L, is developed in the solid state. An amorphous powder of MeP[5]L can take up certain guest vapors to form various ordered linker-containing solid-state molecular assemblies, which can be further used to construct a thermodynamically favored linker-free superstructure upon heating. These approaches are driven by vapor-induced solid-state molecular motions followed by a thermally triggered phase-to-phase transformation. The intermolecular interactions play a crucial role in controlling the molecular arrangements in the resulting assemblies. This research will open new insights into exploring controllable molecular motions and assemblies in the solid state, providing new perspectives in supramolecular chemistry and materials.

Adsorptive separation of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone by nonporous adaptive crystals of RhombicArene

As feedstock chemicals with similar boiling points, cyclohexanol (CHOL) and cyclohexanone (CHON) are often obtained as mixtures during production processes. Separation of mixed CHOL and CHON is important but energy-consuming by distillation. Here we report the development of a new macrocycle RhombicArene, which forms a host-guest complex with CHON through C-H⋯π interactions and hydrogen bonds. The nonporous adaptive crystals of RhombicArene exhibit excellent capability for rapid (30 minutes), exclusive (>99.9%), and recyclable vapor adsorption of CHON in the presence of CHOL under mild and user-friendly conditions.

Rigidified Cavitand Hosts in Water: Bent Guests, Shape Selectivity, and Encapsulation

We report the synthesis and characterization of two water-soluble container compounds (cavitand hosts) with rigidified open ends. One cavitand uses four (CH₂)₄'s as spacers to bridge the adjacent walls, while another cavitand uses four CH₂CH₂OCH₂CH₂'s bridges and features a wider open end. The spacers preorganize the deep cavitands into vase-like, receptive shapes and prevent their unfolding to the unreceptive kite-like conformation. Cycloalkane guests (C6-C8) and small n-alkanes (C5-C7) form 1:1 complexes with the cavitands and move freely in the cavitands' spaces. Hydrophilic compounds 1,4-dioxane, tetrahydrofuran, tetrahydropyran, pyridine, and 1-methylimidazole also showed good binding affinity to the new cavitands. Longer alkanes (C11-C14) and n-alcohols (C11-C16) are taken up with a -CH₃ group fixed at the bottom of the cavity and the groups near the rim in compressed conformations. The methylene bridges appear to divide the cavitand into a narrow hydrophobic compartment and a broader space with exposure to the aqueous medium. Longer alkane guests (C15-C18), N,N-dimethyldioctylammonium, and dioctylamine induce the formation of capsules (2:1 host:guest complexes). The new cavitands showed selectivity for p/m-cresol isomers and xylene isomers. The cavitand with CH₂CH₂OCH₂CH₂ bridges bound long-chain α,ω-diols (C13-C15) and diamines in folded, U-shaped conformations with polar functions exposed to the aqueous medium. It was used to separate o-xylene from its isomers by using simple extraction procedures.

Noria and its derivatives as hosts for chemically and thermally robust Type II porous liquids

Porous Liquids (PLs) are a new class of material that possess both fluidity and permanent porosity. As such they can act as enhanced, selective solvents and may ultimately find applications which are not possible for porous solids, such as continuous flow separation processes. Type II PLs consist of empty molecular hosts dissolved in size-excluded solvents and to date have mainly been based on hosts that have limited chemical and thermal stability. Here we identify Noria, a rigid cyclic oligomer as a new host for the synthesis of more robust Type II PLs. Although the structure of Noria is well-documented, we find that literature has overlooked the true composition of bulk Noria samples. We find that bulk samples typically consist of Noria (ca. 40%), a Noria isomer, specifically a resorcinarene trimer, “R3” (ca. 30%) and other unidentified oligomers (ca. 30%). Noria has been characterised crystallographically as a diethyl ether solvate and its ¹H NMR spectrum fully assigned for the first time. The previously postulated but unreported R3 has also been characterised crystallographically as a dimethyl sulfoxide solvate, which confirms its alternative connectivity to Noria. Noria and R3 have low solubility which precludes their use in Type II PLs, however, the partially ethylated derivative Noria-OEt dissolves in the size-excluded solvent 15-crown-5 to give a new Type II PL. This PL exhibits enhanced uptake of methane (CH₄) gas supporting the presence of empty pores in the liquid. Detailed molecular dynamics simulations support the existence of pores in the liquid and show that occupation of the pores by CH₄ is favoured. Overall, this work revises the general accepted composition of bulk Noria samples and shows that Noria derivatives are appropriate for the synthesis of more robust Type II PLs.

Molecular recognition and adsorptive separation of m-xylene by trianglimine crystals

The separation of xylene isomers is one of the most challenging tasks in the petrochemical industry. Herein, we developed an efficient adsorptive molecular sieving strategy using crystalline trianglimine macrocycle (1) to separate the elusive m-xylene isomer from an equimolar xylenes mixture with over 91% purity. The selectivity is attributed to the capture of the preferred guest with size/shape selectivity and C-H⋯π interactions. Moreover, the trianglimine crystals are readily recyclable due to the reversible transformation between the guest-free and guest-loaded structures.

One-pot Synthesis of a Truncated Cone-shaped Porphyrin Macrocycle and Its Self-assembly into Permanent Porous Material

Here, we report the synthesis of a truncated cone-shaped triangular porphyrinic macrocycle, P₃ L₃ , via a single step imine condensation of a cis-diaminophenylporphyrin and a bent dialdehyde-based linker as building units. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the truncated cone-shaped P₃ L₃ molecules are stacked on top of each other by π⋯π and CH⋯π interactions, to form 1.7 nm wide hollow columns in the solid state. The formation of the triangular macrocycle is corroborated by quantum chemical calculations. The permanent porosity of the P₃ L₃ crystals is demonstrated by several gas sorption experiments and powder X-ray diffraction analysis.

Dynamics in Flexible Pillar[n]arenes Probed by Solid-State NMR

Pillar[n]arenes are supramolecular assemblies that can perform a range of technologically important molecular separations which are enabled by their molecular flexibility. Here, we probe dynamical behavior by performing a range of variable-temperature solid-state NMR experiments on microcrystalline perethylated pillar[n]arene (n = 5, 6) and the corresponding three pillar[6]arene xylene adducts in the 100-350 K range. This was achieved either by measuring site-selective motional averaged 13C 1H heteronuclear dipolar couplings and subsequently accessing order parameters or by determining 1H and 13C spin-lattice relaxation times and extracting correlation times based on dipolar and/or chemical shift anisotropy relaxation mechanisms. We demonstrate fast motional regimes at room temperature and highlight a significant difference in dynamics between the core of the pillar[n]arenes, the protruding flexible ethoxy groups, and the adsorbed xylene guest. Additionally, unexpected and sizable 13C 1H heteronuclear dipolar couplings for a quaternary carbon were observed for p-xylene adsorbed in pillar[6]arene only, indicating a strong host-guest interaction and establishing the p-xylene location inside the host, confirming structural refinements.

Creating porosity in a trianglimine macrocycle by heterochiral pairing

Macrocycles are usually non-porous or barely porous in the solid-state because of their small intrinsic cavity sizes and tendency to close-pack. Here, we use a heterochiral pairing strategy to introduce porosity in a trianglimine macrocycle, by co-crystallising two macrocycles with opposing chiralities. The stable racemic trianglimine crystal contains an interconnected pore network that has a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 355 m2 g-1.

Inherent Ethyl Acetate Selectivity in a Trianglimine Molecular Solid

Ethyl acetate is an important chemical raw material and solvent. It is also a key volatile organic compound in the brewing industry and a marker for lung cancer. Materials that are highly selective toward ethyl acetate are needed for its separation and detection. Here, we report a trianglimine macrocycle (TAMC) that selectively adsorbs ethyl acetate by forming a solvate. Crystal structure prediction showed this to be the lowest energy solvate structure available. This solvate leaves a metastable, “templated” cavity after solvent removal. Adsorption and breakthrough experiments confirmed that TAMC has adequate adsorption kinetics to separate ethyl acetate from azeotropic mixtures with ethanol, which is a challenging and energy‐intensive industrial separation.

Pillar[5]-bis-trithiacrown: Influence of Host-Guest Interactions on the Formation of Coordination Networks

A pillar[5]-bis-trithiacrown (L) capable of metal binding and organic guest threading simultaneously has been employed, and the influence of dinitrile guests [CN(CH₂)_nCN (n = 2-6: abbreviated C2-C6)] on the coordination behaviors has been investigated. When the ditopic ligand L was reacted with HgCl₂ in the presence of the C2-C6 guests, the shorter guests C2 and C3 afforded a two-dimensional coordination polymer [Hg₇Cl₁₄(C2@L)₂]_n (1) and a one-dimensional coordination polymer [(Hg₃Cl₆)₂(C3@L)₂]_n (2), respectively. In 1 and 2, each dinitrile guest threads into the pillararene cavity to form a C2@L or C3@L unit via the host-guest interaction. Further linking of these units by exocyclic Hg-S bonds and anion coordination lead to the formation of coordination products with different dimensionalities. While the use of the longer guests C4-C6 under the same reactions yielded a discrete dimercury(II) complex 3, [Hg₂Cl₄(CH₃CN@L)] which contains one acetonitrile solvent molecule because the longer dinitriles do not serve as effective guests. In the NMR and UV-vis studies, the association constants (log K_1:1) for the host-guest interactions of L with the dinitrile guests are C2 (4.75) > C3 (4.17) ≫ C4 (2.85) > C5 (2.45) > C6 (too small), indicating that the shorter guests C2 or C3 interact more strongly than longer ones due to the confined interior space of L. Taken collectively, the C2 and C3 guests with proper size-matching promote the formation of coordination polymers and vice versa, suggesting that the guest size could be a controlling factor.

Highly Selective Separation of Isopropylbenzene and α-Methylstyrene by Nonporous Adaptive Crystals of Perbromoethylated Pillararene via Vapor- and Liquid-Phase Adsorptions

Isopropylbenzene (IPB) and α-methylstyrene (AMS), two members of C9 aromatics, are important in both industrial production and laboratory research, but the separation of IPB/AMS mixtures is still a big challenge. Here, we provide a new strategy to separate IPB and AMS using nonporous adaptive crystals of four pillararenes, perethylated pillar[5]arene, perethylated pillar[6]arene, perbromoethylated pillar[5]arene, and perbromoethylated pillar[6]arene (BrP6). Among them, BrP6 selectively adsorbs IPB from an equal volume mixture of IPB and AMS with >95% purity for solid-vapor phase adsorption and >94% purity for solid-liquid phase adsorption, while the selectivities for the other three pillararenes are unsatisfactory. Single-crystal structural analyses combined with powder X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry experiments demonstrate that the selectivity arises from the different stabilities of guest-loaded BrP6 crystals. Moreover, the reversible transitions between guest-free and IPB-loaded structures indicate the preeminent recycling performance of BrP6 crystals.

Guest-Binding-Induced Interhetero Hosts Charge Transfer Crystallization: Selective Coloration of Commonly Used Organic Solvents

Unprecedented interheteromacrocyclic hosts charge transfer (CT) crystals were generated by cooling organic solutions containing p-dimethoxybenzene-constituted pillar[5]arene (P5A) and p-benzoquinone-constituted pillar[5]quinone (P5Q). Despite the weak CT interaction known between p-dimethoxybenzene and p-benzoquinone and the lack of formation of CT complexes between P5A and P5Q in the solution phase, CT cocrystals between P5A and P5Q were formed with solvent molecules included into the hosts' cavities. Such a cocrystallization arises from an elegant synergy between the CT interaction and solvent-binding-promoted crystallization. The interhetero hosts CT crystals were studied by optical and electron microscopic techniques, X-ray powder diffraction, solid-state NMR, UV-vis, IR spectroscopic studies, and X-ray single-crystal studies. The solvent complexation was critical for formation of the supramolecular CT microcrystals. The CT absorption bands faded upon removing the solvent molecules under vacuum, but they could be recovered by reuptake of the solvent molecules. Intriguingly, the CT absorption bands and uptake kinetics are distinguishably different for various organic solvents, thus providing a unique way to distinguish between different commonly used chemicals.

Intrinsically Porous Molecular Materials (IPMs) for Natural Gas and Benzene Derivatives Separations

ConspectusSeparating and purifying chemicals without heat would go a long way toward reducing the overall energy consumption and the harmful environmental footprint of the process. Molecular separation processes are critical for the production of raw materials, commodity chemicals, and specialty fuels. Over 50% of the energy used in the production of these materials is spent on separation and purification processes, which primarily includes vacuum and cryogenic distillations. Chemical manufacturers are now investigating modest thermal approaches, such as membranes and adsorbent materials, as they are more cognizant than ever of the need to save energy and prevent pollution. Porous materials, such as zeolites, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), have dominated the field of industrial separations as their high surface areas and robust pores make them ideal candidates for molecular separations of gases and hydrocarbons. Separation processes involving porous materials can save 70%-90% of energy costs compared to that of thermally driven distillations. However, most porous materials have low thermal, chemical, and moisture stability, in addition to limited solution processability, which tremendously constrain their broad industrial translation. Intrinsically porous molecular materials (IPMs) are a subclass of porous molecular materials that are comprised of molecular host macrocycles or cages that absorb guests in or around their intrinsic cavity. IPMs range from discrete porous molecules to assemblies with amorphous or highly crystalline structures that are held together by weak supramolecular interactions. Compared to the coordination or dynamic covalent bond-constructed porous frameworks, IPMs possess high thermal, chemical, and moisture stability and maintain their porosity under critical conditions. Moreover, the intrinsic porosity endows IPMs with excellent host-guest properties in solid, liquid (organic or aqueous), and gas states, which can be further utilized to construct diverse separation strategies, such as solid-gas adsorption, solid-liquid absorption, and liquid-liquid extraction. The diversity of host-guest interactions in the engineered IPMs affords a plethora of possibilities for the development of the ideal "molecular sieves". Herein, we present a different take on the applicability of intrinsically porous materials such as cyclodextrin (CD), cucurbiturils (CB), pillararene (P), trianglamines (T), and porous organic cages (POCs) that showed an impressive performance in gas purification and benzene derivatives separation. IPMs can be easily scaled up and are quite stable and solution processable that consequently facilitates a favorable technological transformation from the traditional energy-intensive separations. We will account for the main advances in molecular host-guest chemistry to design "on-demand" separation processes and also outline future challenges and opportunities for this promising technology.

Supramolecular chemistry has successfully built a foundation of fundamental understanding. However, with this now achieved, we show how this area of chemistry is moving out of the laboratory towards successful commercialisation.

α,α-Diphenyl-9,10-dihydro-9,10-ethanoanthracene-11-methanol possessed an enhanced selectivity for o-Xy when recrystallized from various xylene and EB mixed solvents (84.5–93.7%).

Hierarchical self-assembly of discrete bis-[2]pseudorotaxane metallacycle with bis-pillar[5]arene via host-guest interactions and their redox-responsive behaviors

A discrete rhomboidal metallacycle R functionalized with bis-[2]pseudorotaxane of [Cu(phenanthroline)2]+ derivatives was successfully synthesized via coordination-driven self-assembly. Furthermore, the host-guest complexation of such a bis-[2]pseudorotaxane metallacycle with a bis-pillar[5]arene (bisP5) allowed for the formation of a new family of cross-linked supramolecular polymers R⊃(bisP5)2, which displayed interesting redox-responsive properties. By taking advantage of the substantial structural differences between the coordination geometries of [Cu(phenanthroline)2]+ and [Cu(phenanthroline)2]2+, the weight-average diffusion coefficients D of the supramolecular polymer were adjusted through changing the redox state of the Cu(i)/Cu(ii) complexes.

Vapochromism of Organic Crystals Based on Macrocyclic Compounds and Inclusion Complexes

Vapochromic materials, which change color and luminescence when exposed to specific vapors and gases, have attracted considerable attention in recent years owing to their potential applications in a wide range of fields such as chemical sensors and environmental monitors. Although the mechanism of vapochromism is still unclear, several studies have elucidated it from the viewpoint of crystal engineering. In this mini-review, we investigate recent advances in the vapochromism of organic crystals. Among them, macrocyclic molecules and inclusion complexes, which have apparent host–guest interactions with analyte molecules (specific vapors and gases), are described. When the host compound is properly designed, its cavity size and symmetry change in response to guest molecules, influencing the optical properties by changing the molecular inclusion and recognition abilities. This information highlights the importance of structure–property relationships resulting from the molecular recognition at the solid–vapor interface.

Capture of Sulfur Mustard by Pillar[5]arene: From Host-Guest Complexation to Efficient Adsorption Using Nonporous Adaptive Crystals

Sulfur mustard (SM) has been the most frequently used chemical warfare agent. Here, we present the efficient containment of SM and its simulants by per-ethylated pillar[5]arene (EtP5). EtP5 exhibited strong binding abilities toward SM and its simulants not only in solution but also in the solid state. The association constant (Ka) between SM and EtP5 was determined as (6.2 ± 0.6) × 103 M-1 in o-xylene-d10. Single crystal structure of SM@EtP5 showed that a 1:1 inclusion complex was formed, which was driven by multiple C-H···π/Cl/S and S···π interactions. In addition, activated crystal materials of EtP5 (EtP5α) could effectively adsorb SM simulants at solid-vapor phase; powder X-ray diffraction patterns and host-guest crystal structures indicated that the uptake process triggered a solid-state structural transformation. More interestingly, the captured guest molecules could be stably contained in EtP5α for at least 6 months in air at room temperature.

Refinement of pore size at sub-angstrom precision in robust metal-organic frameworks for separation of xylenes

The demand for xylenes is projected to increase over the coming decades. The separation of xylene isomers, particularly p- and m-xylenes, is vital for the production of numerous polymers and materials. However, current state-of-the-art separation is based upon fractional crystallisation at 220 K which is highly energy intensive. Here, we report the discrimination of xylene isomers via refinement of the pore size in a series of porous metal-organic frameworks, MFM-300, at sub-angstrom precision leading to the optimal kinetic separation of all three xylene isomers at room temperature. The exceptional performance of MFM-300 for xylene separation is confirmed by dynamic ternary breakthrough experiments. In-depth structural and vibrational investigations using synchrotron X-ray diffraction and terahertz spectroscopy define the underlying host-guest interactions that give rise to the observed selectivity (p-xylene < o-xylene < m-xylene) and separation factors of 4.6-18 for p- and m-xylenes.

Synthetic Macrocycle-Based Nonporous Adaptive Crystals for Molecular Separation

The exploitation of new materials for adsorptive separation of industrially important hydrocarbons is of great importance in both scientific research and petrochemical industry. Nonporous adaptive crystals (NACs) as a robust class of synthetic materials have drawn much attention during the past five years for their superior performance in adsorption and separation. Pillararenes are the main family of macrocyclic arenes used for NACs construction, where the structure-function relationship has been intensively studied. In the past two years, some emerging types of synthetic macrocyclic arenes have been successfully brought into this research field, showing the gradual enrichment and diversification of NACs materials. This Minireview summarizes the recent advances of synthetic macrocycle-based NACs, which are categorized by various practical applications in molecular separation. Besides, NACs-based vapochromic supramolecular systems are also discussed. Finally, future perspectives and challenges of NACs are given. We envisage that this Minireview will be a useful and timely reference for those who are interested in new molecular and supramolecular crystals for storage and separation applications.

Linear tri-pillar[5]arene-based acceptor for efficiently separate paraquat from water through collaboration effect

Paraquat, one of non-selective herbicides, is widely used in agricultural production. However, it can cause death of people or animals quickly owing to its fatal toxicity. In the present work, for efficient separation and removal of the paraquat, a concept "employ collaboration effect to enhance the Host-Guest interactions" was rationally introduced into the design of paraquat adsorbent material. According to this concept, a novel linear tri-pillar[5]arene-based acceptor molecule was synthesized. Interestingly, the acceptor shows outstanding adsorption properties for paraquat through the collaboration effect of the adjacent pillar[5]arene moieties in the linear tri-pillar[5]arene acceptor. Compared with other adsorbents such as activated carbon and single-pillar[5]arene-based adsorbent materials, the linear tri-pillar[5]arene acceptor shows higher adsorption rate for paraquat. Additionally, the linear tri-pillar[5]arene acceptor was applied to adsorb the commercial pesticide paraquat sample in water with adsorption rate of 98%. Therefore, the linear tri-pillar[5]arene acceptor could serve as a paraquat adsorbent material and convey greatly potential application in the field of removal of paraquat. The concept "employ collaboration effect to enhance the Host-Guest interactions" is a useful way for the development of adsorption materials.

Host-Guest Complexations Between Pillar[6]arenes and Neutral Pentaerythritol Derivatives

It is demonstrated that three kinds of neutral pentaerythritol derivatives possess promising host-guest complexations with pillar[6]arenes both in solution and in the solid state. The inclusion structures were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. The complexation properties in different solvents were also investigated.

Tubularenes

We report the synthesis and characterization of conjugated, conformationally rigid, and electroactive carbon-based nanotubes that we term tubularenes. These structures are constructed from a resorcin[n b]arene base. Cyclization of the conjugated aromatic nanotube is achieved in one-pot eight-fold C-C bond formation via Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling. DFT calculations indicate a buildup of strain energy in excess of 90 kcal mol-1. The resulting architectures contain large internal void spaces >260 Å3, are fluorescent, and able to accept up to 4 electrons. This represents the first scaffolding approach that provides conjugated nanotube architectures.

Crystal engineering of a rectangular coordination network to enable xylenes selectivity over ethylbenzene

Separation of the C8 aromatic isomers, p-xylene (PX), m-xylene (MX), o-xylene (OX) and ethylbenzene (EB), is relevant thanks to their widespread application as chemical feedstocks but challenging because of their similar boiling points and close molecular dimensions. Physisorptive separation could offer an energy-efficient solution to this challenge but sorbents which exhibit strong selectivity for one of the isomers remain a largely unmet challenge despite recent reports of OX or PX selective sorbents with high uptake capacity. For example, the square lattice, sql, topology coordination network [Co(bipy)2(NCS)2] n (sql-1-Co-NCS) exhibits the rare combination of high OX selectivity and high uptake capacity. Herein we report that a crystal engineering approach enabled isolation of the mixed-linker sql coordination network [Co(bipy)(bptz)(NCS)2] n (sql-1,3-Co-NCS, bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine, bptz = 4,4'-bis(4-pyridyl)tetrazine) and study of its C8 vapour and liquid sorption properties. sql-1,3-Co-NCS was found to exhibit high adsorption capacity from liquid xylenes (∼37 wt%) and is to our knowledge the first sorbent to exhibit high selectivity for each of xylene isomer over EB (S OX/EB, S MX/EB, S PX/EB > 5). Insights into the performance of sql-1,3-Co-NCS are gained from structural studies which reveal stacking interactions between electron-deficient bptz linkers and the respective xylenes. sql-1,3-Co-NCS is the first N-donor mixed-linker sql coordination network studied for its gas/vapour sorption properties and represents a large and diverse class of understudied coordination networks.

An Expandable Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework Characterized by Three-Dimensional Electron Diffraction

A molecular crystal of a 2-D hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) undergoes an unusual structural transformation after solvent removal from the crystal pores during activation. The conformationally flexible host molecule, ABTPA, adapts its molecular conformation during activation to initiate a framework expansion. The microcrystalline activated phase was characterized by three-dimensional electron diffraction (3D ED), which revealed that ABTPA uses out-of-plane anthracene units as adaptive structural anchors. These units change orientation to generate an expanded, lower density framework material in the activated structure. The porous HOF, ABTPA-2, has robust dynamic porosity (SA_BET = 1183 m² g^-1) and exhibits negative area thermal expansion. We use crystal structure prediction (CSP) to understand the underlying energetics behind the structural transformation and discuss the challenges facing CSP for such flexible molecules.

Alkane Shape- and Size-Recognized Selective Vapor Sorption in "Channel-Like" Crystals Based on Thiacalixarene Assemblies

Alkanes composed of C-C and C-H show a low electric polarization, and therefore, there is only very weak interaction between alkanes and adsorbents. Thus, it is difficult to separate a specific alkane from a mixture of alkanes by adsorption. Here, two activated "channel-like" crystals generated from brominated thiacalix[4]arene propyl ethers, which adopt 1,3-alternate and partial cone conformations, recognize specific alkane vapors depending on alkane-shape and -size, sorting in three-type alkane guests such as linear, branched, and cyclic alkanes. Two activated crystals, which are prepared by removal of solvent upon heating under reduced pressure, incorporate branched and/or cyclic alkane vapors by a unique "gate-opening" mechanism via a crystal transformation in the process. Linear alkane vapors do not trigger gate opening and are not taken up by the activated crystals. The shape and size molecular-recognition properties of the activated crystals promises considerable usefulness for the separation of linear, branched, and cyclic alkanes.

Binding selectivity and separation of p-functionalized toluenes with a metallo-cavitand in water

A metallo-cavitand (1-2Pd) showed unprecedented binding selectivity and sequestration of p-functionalized toluene isomers in water. The host-guest complexation was studied using 1H and COSY NMR methods and xylene-isomer complexes were examined by using DFT calculations. A liquid-liquid extraction scheme was developed for the separation of p-functionalized toluenes.
