Nanocrystals of Cesium Lead Halide Perovskites (CsPbX₃, X = Cl, Br, and I): Novel Optoelectronic Materials Showing Bright Emission with Wide Color Gamut

Harnessing Pb-S Interactions for Long-Term Water Stability in Cesium Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals

Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (LHP NCs) have garnered attention as promising light-harvesting materials for optoelectronics and photovoltaic devices, attributed to their impressive optoelectronic properties. However, their susceptibility to moisture-induced degradation has hindered their practical applications. Despite various encapsulation strategies, challenges persist in maintaining their stability and optoelectronic performance simultaneously. Here, a ligand exchange approach is proposed using (11-mercaptoundecyl)-N,N,N-trimethylammonium bromide (MUTAB) to enhance the stability and dispersibility of CsPbBr3 (CPB) NCs in aqueous environments. MUTAB enables effective surface passivation of the CPB NCs via robust Pb-S interactions at the S-terminal while concurrently directing water molecules through the unbound cationic N-terminal or vice versa, ensuring water dispersibility and stability. Spectroscopic analysis confirms retained structural and optical integrity post-ligand exchange. Crucially, MUTAB-bound CPB NCs exhibit sustained charge transfer properties, demonstrated by aqueous colloidal oxidation reactions. This ligand exchange strategy offers a promising pathway for advancing LHP NCs toward practical optoelectronic and photocatalytic applications.

Photo-Assisted Rechargeable Metal Batteries: Principles, Progress, and Perspectives

The utilization of diverse energy storage devices is imperative in the contemporary society. Taking advantage of solar power, a significant environmentally friendly and sustainable energy resource, holds great appeal for future storage of energy because it can solve the dilemma of fossil energy depletion and the resulting environmental problems once and for all. Recently, photo-assisted energy storage devices, especially photo-assisted rechargeable metal batteries, are rapidly developed owing to the ability to efficiently convert and store solar energy and the simple configuration, as well as the fact that conventional Li/Zn-ion batteries are widely commercialized. Considering many puzzles arising from the rapid development of photo-assisted rechargeable metal batteries, this review commences by introducing the fundamental concepts of batteries and photo-electrochemistry, followed by an exploration of the current advancements in photo-assisted rechargeable metal batteries. Specifically, it delves into the elucidation of device components, operating principles, types, and practical applications. Furthermore, this paper categorizes, specifies, and summarizes several detailed examples of photo-assisted energy storage devices. Lastly, it addresses the challenges and bottlenecks faced by these energy storage systems while providing future perspectives to facilitate their transition from laboratory research to industrial implementation.

Hexagonal Halide Perovskite Cs2LiInCl6: Cation Ordering, Face-Shared Octahedral Trimers and Mn2+ Luminescence

The In-based double perovskite halides have been widely studied for promising optical-electric applications. The halide hexagonal perovskite Cs2LiInCl6 was isolated using solid-state reactions and investigated using X-ray diffraction and solid-state NMR spectra. The material adopts a 12-layered hexagonal structure (12R) consisting of layered cationic orders driven by the cationic charge difference and has Li+ cations in the terminal site and In3+ in the central site of face-shared octahedron trimers. Such a cationic ordering pattern is stabilized by electrostatic repulsions between the next-nearest neighboring cations in the trimers. The LiCl6 octahedron displays large distortion and is confirmed by 7Li SS NMR in the Cs2LiInCl6. The Cs2LiInCl6 material has a direct bandgap of ~4.98 eV. The Cs2LiInCl6: Mn2+ displays redshift luminescence (centered at ~610-622 nm) from the substituted Mn2+ emission in octahedron with larger PLQY (17.8 %-48 %) compared with that of Cs2NaInCl6: Mn2+. The Mn-doped materials show luminescent concentration quenching and thermal quenching. The composition Cs2Li0.99In0.99Mn0.02Cl6 exhibits the highest PL intensity, a maximum PLQY of 48 %, and high luminescent retention rate of ~86 % below 400 K and is suitable for application for pc-LED. These findings contribute to our understanding of the chloride perovskites and hold potential for widespread optical applications.

HCOO- Doping-Induced Multiexciton Emissions in Cs3Cu2I5 Crystals for Efficient X-Ray Scintillation

Self-trapped exciton (STE) luminescence, typically associated with structural deformation of excited states, has attracted significant attention in metal halide materials recently. However, the mechanism of multiexciton STE emissions in certain metal halide crystals remains largely unexplored. This study investigates dual luminescence emissions in HCOO- doped Cs3Cu2I5 single crystals using transient and steady-state spectroscopy. The dual emissions are attributed to intrinsic STE luminescence originating from the host lattice and extrinsic STE luminescence induced by external dopants, respectively, each of which can be triggered independently at distinct energy levels. Theoretical calculations reveal that multiexciton emission originates from structural distortion of the host and dopant STEs within the 0D lattice in their respective excited states. By meticulously tuning the excitation wavelength and selectively exciting different STEs, the dynamic alteration of color change in Cs3Cu2I5:HCOO- crystals is demonstrated. Ultimately, owing to an extraordinarily high photoluminescence quantum yield (99.01%) and a diminished degree of self-absorption in Cs3Cu2I5:HCOO- crystals, they exhibit remarkable X-ray scintillation characteristics with light yield being improved by 5.4 times as compared to that of pristine Cs3Cu2I5 crystals, opening up exciting avenues for achieving low-dose X-ray detection and imaging.

Synergistic Steric Effect of Precursor And Antisolvent Enables Strongly Confined Perovskite Films with Efficient and Spectral Stable Blue Emission

Reducing the crystal size of perovskites to the strong quantum confinement regime is an effective way to realize blue luminescence for light-emitting applications. However, challenges remain in directly constraining the crystal growth during film preparation to achieve three-dimensional quantum confinement, and the widely used long-chain ligands may bring difficulties for charge transport and unfavorably affect the device performance. Herein, we report a novel strategy for fabricating strongly confined blue-emitting perovskite nanocrystalline films via synergistic steric effect modulation by precursors and antisolvents. We synthesize cesium pentafluoropropanoate (CsPFPA) as a new type of precursor agent, where the steric effect of the PFPA group can help constrain the growth of perovskite crystals and passivate the defects. Furthermore, different types of antisolvents with varied molecular sizes and steric hindrance are used to regulate the size of perovskite crystals and improve film quality. Consequently, highly emissive blue perovskite films are realized with the emission wavelength effectively tuned in the blue region by varying the concentration of CsPFPA as well as the type of antisolvents. Based on the strongly confined perovskite films, blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are constructed, showing good spectral tunability and stability in the electroluminescence. This work demonstrates a novel pathway for developing bright perovskite blue emitters for LEDs, which may potentially advance their future applications in display and lighting.

Luminescent Cs8PbBr64+ Quantum Dots Centered on the Octahedral PbBr64- Cluster within Zeolite LTA: Exploring the Edge of Three-Dimensional Crystal Structure and Its Stability

The perovskite quantum dots (QDs) of CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) exhibit exceptional photoluminescent properties, but their sensitivity to moisture and heat poses a challenge. This study presents a solvent-free synthesis approach for incorporating CsPbBr3 perovskite QDs into zeolite A. The introduction of [Cs8PbBr6]4+ perovskite QDs into the zeolite framework resulted in a highly stable configuration, maintaining its initial luminescence properties even after being underwater or exposed to heat. The structure is determined by 3-dimensional single-crystal crystallography. Each octahedral PbBr64- ion is surrounded by Cs+ ions and [Cs8PbBr6]4+ perovskite QDs being formed at the 32% of the center of a large cavity. Further, [Na12CsBr8]5+ QDs are formed at the very center of another 46% large cavities by combining Cs+, Na+, and Br- ions. The peak in the emission spectrum of Pb,Br,Cs,Na-A is similar to those of the CsPbBr3 nanocrystal, Cs4PbBr6 0-dimensional perovskite QDs, and Pb,Br,H,Cs,Na-FAU(X and Y). This work demonstrates that Pb,Br,Cs,Na-A can be produced using a simplified solvent-free synthesis procedure, which exhibits excellent stability against moisture and heat. Moreover, through a straightforward process, various quantum dots (QDs) can be incorporated into zeolite cavities to develop materials with variety photoluminescent properties.

Metal nanowire-based transparent electrode for flexible and stretchable optoelectronic devices

High-quality transparent electrodes are indispensable components of flexible optoelectronic devices as they guarantee sufficient light transparency and electrical conductivity. Compared to commercial indium tin oxide, metal nanowires are considered ideal candidates as flexible transparent electrodes (FTEs) owing to their superior optoelectronic properties, excellent mechanical flexibility, solution treatability, and higher compatibility with semiconductors. However, certain key challenges associated with material preparation and device fabrication remain for the practical application of metal nanowire-based electrodes. In this review, we discuss state-of-the-art solution-processed metal nanowire-based FTEs and their applications in flexible and stretchable optoelectronic devices. Specifically, the important properties of FTEs and a cost-benefit analysis of existing technologies are introduced, followed by a summary of the synthesis strategy, key properties, and fabrication technologies of the nanowires. Subsequently, we explore the applications of metal-nanowire-based FTEs in different optoelectronic devices including solar cells, photodetectors, and light-emitting diodes. Finally, the current status, future challenges, and emerging strategies in this field are presented.

Deep Blue CsPbBr3 Quantum Wires with Tailored Shapes

Low-dimension metal halide perovskites are attractive for bandgap tunable optoelectronic materials. Among them, 1-D CsPbBr3 quantum wires (QWs) are emerging as promising deep-blue luminescent material. However, the growth dynamics of 1-D perovskite QWs are intricate, making the study and control of 1-D QWs highly challenging. In this study, a strategy for controlling both the length and width of the CsPbBr3 QWs was realized. The temperature-dependent isotropic growth mechanism was revealed and employed as the main tool for the oriented growth of 1-D CsPbBr3 QWs for various aspect ratios. Our results pave the way for the controlled synthesis of ultrasmall perovskite nanocrystals.

Continuous-flow synthesis of CsPbI3/TiO2 nanocomposites with enhanced water and thermal stability

The inherent poor stability of CsPbI3 nanocrystals hinders the practical application of this material. Therefore, it is still a challenge to improve the stability of CsPbI3 nanocrystals and realize their large-scale continuous preparation. In this work, we report the preparation of CsPbI3/TiO2 nanocomposites with high stability by a microfluidic method. After the combination of CsPbI3 nanorods with TiO2, the PL intensity increased by 1.3 times under excitation at 577 nm due to the passivating effect of TiO2 on the surface of CsPbI3 nanorods and its carrier transport characteristics. Meanwhile, due to the coating of TiO2, the surface exposure area of CsPbI3 nanorods is reduced, which blocks external environmental effects to some extent and effectively improves the stability of CsPbI3 nanorods. Finally, an LED with a color gamut of 142% NTSC and a color temperature (CCT) of 3952 K was obtained by combining CsPbI1.5Br1.5/TiO2 and CsPbBr3/TiO2 nanocomposites with a blue light chip (455 nm). This study shows that the continuous and controllable synthesis of all inorganic halide perovskite nanocrystals by a microfluidic method is of great significance in the fabrication of high-performance optoelectronic materials and display devices.

CsPbBr3 Perovskite Crack Platelet Nanocrystals and Their Biexciton Generation

Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals have been extensively studied in recent years as efficient optical materials for their bright and color-tunable emissions. However, these are mostly confined to their 3D nanocrystals and limited to the anisotropic nanostructures. By exploring the Cs-sublattice-induced metal(II) ion exchange with Pb(II), crack CsPbBr3 perovskite platelet nanocrystals having polar surfaces in all three directions are reported here, which remained different than reported standard square platelets. The crack platelets are also passivated with halides to enhance their brightness. Further, as these crack and passivated crack platelets have defects and polar surfaces, the exciton and biexciton generation in these platelets is investigated using femtosecond photoluminescence and transient absorption measurement at ambient as well as cryogenic temperatures, correlated with time-resolved single-particle photoluminescence spectroscopy, and compared with standard square platelets having nonpolar facets. These investigations revealed that the crack platelets and passivated crack platelets possess enhanced biexciton emission compared to square platelets due to the presence of polar surfaces in all three directions. These results provide insights into not only the design of the anisotropic nanostructures of ionic nanocrystals but also the possibility of tuning the single exciton to biexciton generation efficiency, which has potential applications in optoelectronic systems.

Surface-binding molecular multipods strengthen the halide perovskite lattice and boost luminescence

Reducing the size of perovskite crystals to confine excitons and passivating surface defects has fueled a significant advance in the luminescence efficiency of perovskite light-emitting diodes (LEDs). However, the persistent gap between the optical limit of electroluminescence efficiency and the photoluminescence efficiency of colloidal perovskite nanocrystals (PeNCs) suggests that defect passivation alone is not sufficient to achieve highly efficient colloidal PeNC-LEDs. Here, we present a materials approach to controlling the dynamic nature of the perovskite surface. Our experimental and theoretical studies reveal that conjugated molecular multipods (CMMs) adsorb onto the perovskite surface by multipodal hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interactions, strengthening the near-surface perovskite lattice and reducing ionic fluctuations which are related to nonradiative recombination. The CMM treatment strengthens the perovskite lattice and suppresses its dynamic disorder, resulting in a near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield of PeNC films and a high external quantum efficiency (26.1%) of PeNC-LED with pure green emission that matches the Rec.2020 color standard for next-generation vivid displays.

Controlling the Phase Distribution of Single Bromide Quasi-2-Dimensional Perovskite Crystals via Solvent Engineering for Pure-Blue Light-Emitting Diodes

To achieve pure-blue emission (460-470 nm), we manipulate the crystallization process of the quasi-2D perovskite, (PBA)2Csn-1PbnBr3n+1, prepared by a solution process. The strategy involves controlling the distribution of "n" phases with different bandgaps, solely utilizing changes in the precursor's supersaturation to ensure that the desired emission aligns with the smallest bandgap. Adjustments in photoluminescence (PL) wavelength are made by changing the solute concentration and solvent polarity, as these factors heavily influence the diffusion of cations, a crucial determinant for the value of "n". Subsequently, we enhance the PL quantum yield from 31 to 51% at 461 nm using trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) as an additive of antisolvent, which passivates halide vacancy and promotes orderly crystal growth, leading to faster carrier transfer between phases. With these strategies, we successfully demonstrate pure-blue LEDs with a turn-on voltage of 3.3 V and an external quantum efficiency of 5.5% at an emission peak of 470 nm with a full-width at half-maximum of 31 nm.

Spectator Exciton Effects in Nanocrystals III: Unveiling the Stimulated Emission Cross Section in Quantum Confined CsPbBr3 Nanocrystals

Quantifying stimulated emission in semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) remains challenging due to masking of its effects on pump-probe spectra by excited state absorption and ground state bleaching signals. The absence of this defining photophysical parameter in turn impedes assignment of band edge electronic structure in many of these important fluorophores. Here we employ a generally applicable 3-pulse ultrafast spectroscopic method coined the "Spectator Exciton" (SX) approach to measure stimulated-emission efficiency in quantum confined inorganic perovskite CsPbBr3 NCs, the band edge electronic structure of which is the subject of lively ongoing debate. Our results show that in 5-6 nm CsPbBr3 NCs, a single exciton bleaches more than half of the intense band edge absorption band, while the cross section for stimulated emission from the same state is nearly 6 times weaker. Discussion of these findings in light of several recent electronic structure models for this material proves them unable to simultaneously explain both measures, proving the importance of this new input to resolving this debate. Along with femtosecond time-resolved photoluminescence measurements on the same sample, SX results also verify that biexciton interaction energy is intensely attractive with a magnitude of ∼80 meV. In light of this observation, our previous suggestion that biexciton interaction is repulsive is reassigned to hot phonon induced slowdown of carrier relaxation leading to direct Auger recombination from an excited state. The mechanism behind the extreme slowing of carrier cooling after several stages of exciton recombination remains to be determined.

Ultrafast electron shuttling suppresses the energy transfer process in Mn-doped CsPbCl3 nanocrystals

Taking advantage of the slow exciton-to-dopant energy transfer process, we dissociated the exciton in Mn-doped perovskite via ultrafast electron shuttling to a surface adsorbed 4-nitro phenol molecule. The observed ultrafast electron transfer process is competitive to the ultrafast exciton scattering process (∼140 fs) to the continuum states via optical phonons, but three-orders faster than the exciton-to-Mn energy transfer timescale.

Ligand Equilibrium Influences Photoluminescence Blinking in CsPbBr3: A Change Point Analysis of Widefield Imaging Data

Photoluminescence intermittency remains one of the biggest challenges in realizing perovskite quantum dots (QDs) as scalable single photon emitters. We compare CsPbBr3 QDs capped with different ligands, lecithin, and a combination of oleic acid and oleylamine, to elucidate the role of surface chemistry on photoluminescence intermittency. We employ widefield photoluminescence microscopy to sample the blinking behavior of hundreds of QDs. Using change point analysis, we achieve the robust classification of blinking trajectories, and we analyze representative distributions from large numbers of QDs (Nlecithin = 1308, Noleic acid/oleylamine = 1317). We find that lecithin suppresses blinking in CsPbBr3 QDs compared with oleic acid/oleylamine. Under common experimental conditions, lecithin-capped QDs are 7.5 times more likely to be nonblinking and spend 2.5 times longer in their most emissive state, despite both QDs having nearly identical solution photoluminescence quantum yields. We measure photoluminescence as a function of dilution and show that the differences between lecithin and oleic acid/oleylamine capping emerge at low concentrations during preparation for single particle experiments. From experiment and first-principles calculations, we attribute the differences in lecithin and oleic acid/oleylamine performance to differences in their ligand binding equilibria. Consistent with our experimental data, density functional theory calculations suggest a stronger binding affinity of lecithin to the QD surface compared to oleic acid/oleylamine, implying a reduced likelihood of ligand desorption during dilution. These results suggest that using more tightly binding ligands is a necessity for surface passivation and, consequently, blinking reduction in perovskite QDs used for single particle and quantum light experiments.

Nanomaterials as a Service (NaaS) concept: on-demand protocols for volume synthesis of nanomaterials

Establishing scalable nanomaterials synthesis protocols remains a bottleneck towards their commercialisation and, thus, a topic of intense research and development. Herein, we present an automated machine-learning microfluidic platform capable of synthesising optically active nanomaterials from target spectra originating from prior experience, theorised or published. Implementing unsupervised Bayesian optimisation with Gaussian processes reduces the optimisation time and the need for prior knowledge to initiate the process. Using PTFE tubing and connectors enables facile change in reactor design. Ultimately, the platform substitutes the labour-intensive trial-and-error synthesis and provides a pathway to standardisation and volume synthesis, slowing down the translation and commercialisation of high-quality nanomaterials. As a proof-of-concept, Ag nanoplates and Prussian-blue nanoparticle protocols were optimised and validated for volume production.

Identification of Semiconductor Nanocrystals with Bright Ground-State Excitons

While semiconductor nanocrystals provide versatile fluorescent materials for light-emitting devices, their brightness suffers from the "dark exciton"─an optically inactive electronic state into which nanocrystals relax before emitting. Recently, a theoretical mechanism, the Rashba effect, was discovered that can overcome this limitation by inverting the lowest-lying levels and creating a bright excitonic ground state. However, no methodology is available to systematically identify materials that exhibit this inversion, hindering the development of superbright nanocrystals and their devices. Here, based on a detailed understanding of the Rashba mechanism, we demonstrate a procedure that reveals previously unknown "bright-exciton" nanocrystals. We first define physical criteria to reduce over 500,000 known solids to 173 targets. Higher-level first-principles calculations then refine this list to 28 candidates. From these, we select five with high oscillator strength and develop effective-mass models to determine the nature of their lowest excitonic state. We confirm that four of the five solids yield bright ground-state excitons in nanocrystals. Thus, our results provide a badly needed roadmap for experimental investigation of bright-exciton nanomaterials.

Phenylethylammonium bromide-assisted solution-phase ligand exchange in CsPbBr3quantum dot solar cells

CsPbBr3quantum dots (QDs) have excellent optical properties and good phase stability, but the long-chain ligands on their surfaces affect the charge transfer between QDs. Here, we propose a simple ligand exchange strategy: solution-phase ligand exchange. By adding an acetone solution of phenylethylammonium bromide to the purification process of CsPbBr3QDs, the long-chain ligands were effectively replaced and the electric coupling between QDs was improved. As a result, the power conversion efficiency of the solar cell was increased from 1.95% to 2.83%. Meanwhile, the stability of the devices was significantly improved in the unencapsulated case.

In Situ Growth Method for Large-Area Flexible Perovskite Nanocrystal Films

Metal halide perovskites have shown unique advantages compared with traditional optoelectronic materials. Currently, perovskite films are commonly produced by either multi-step spin coating or vapor deposition techniques. However, both methods face challenges regarding large-scale production. Herein, we propose a straightforward in situ growth method for the fabrication of CsPbBr3 nanocrystal films. The films cover an area over 5.5 cm × 5.5 cm, with precise thickness control of a few microns and decent uniformity. Moreover, we demonstrate that the incorporation of magnesium ions into the perovskite enhances crystallization and effectively passivates surface defects, thereby further enhancing luminous efficiency. By integrating this approach with a silicon photodiode detector, we observe an increase in responsivity from 1.68 × 10-2 A/W to 3.72 × 10-2 A/W at a 365 nm ultraviolet wavelength.

Size Dependence of Ultrafast Electron Transfer from Didodecyl Dimethylammonium Bromide-Modified CsPbBr3 Nanocrystals to Electron Acceptors

Charge transfer efficiencies in all-inorganic lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) are crucial for applications in photovoltaics and photocatalysis. Herein, CsPbBr3 NCs with different sizes are synthesized by varying the ligand contents of didodecyl dimethylammonium bromide at room temperature. Adding benzoquinone (BQ) molecules leads to a decrease in the PL intensities and PL decay times in NCs. The electron transfer (ET) efficiency (ηET) increases with NC size in complexes of CsPbBr3 NCs and BQ molecules (NC-BQ complexes), when the same concentration of BQ is maintained, as investigated by transient photobleaching and photoluminescence spectroscopies. Controlling the same number of attached BQ acceptor molecules per NC induces the same ηET in NC-BQ complexes even though with different NC sizes. Our findings provide new insights into ultrafast charge transfer behaviors in perovskite NCs, which is important for designing efficient light energy conversion devices.

Exogenous Metal Cations in the Synthesis of CsPbBr3 Nanocrystals and Their Interplay with Tertiary Amines

Current syntheses of CsPbBr3 halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) rely on overstoichiometric amounts of Pb2+ precursors, resulting in unreacted lead ions at the end of the process. In our synthesis scheme of CsPbBr3 NCs, we replaced excess Pb2+ with different exogenous metal cations (M) and investigated their effect on the synthesis products. These cations can be divided into two groups: group 1 delivers monodisperse CsPbBr3 cubes capped with oleate species (as for the case when Pb2+ is used in excess) and with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) as high as 90% with some cations (for example with M = In3+); group 2 yields irregularly shaped CsPbBr3 NCs with broad size distributions. In both cases, the addition of a tertiary ammonium cation (didodecylmethylammonium, DDMA+) during the synthesis, after the nucleation of the NCs, reshapes the NCs to monodisperse truncated cubes. Such NCs feature a mixed oleate/DDMA+ surface termination with PLQY values of up to 97%. For group 1 cations this happens only if the ammonium cation is directly added as a salt (DDMA-Br), while for group 2 cations this happens even if the corresponding tertiary amine (DDMA) is added, instead of DDMA-Br. This is attributed to the fact that only group 2 cations can facilitate the protonation of DDMA by the excess oleic acid present in the reaction environment. In all cases studied, the incorporation of M cations is marginal, and the reshaping of the NCs is only transient: if the reactions are run for a long time, the truncated cubes evolve to cubes.

A statistical theory of the photoluminescence determination of the band gap energy in nano-crystals and layered materials

Semiconductor nano-crystals as well as two-dimensional nanostructures manifest an abnormal dependence of the optical band gap energy on the temperature. In contrast to bulk systems, in the present case the optical band gap energy increases with temperature or may show a non-monotonic blueshift-redshift behavior. It was suggested that this abnormal temperature behavior is associated with the recombination of excitons and free electron-hole pairs under conditions of quantum confinement. Here, we show that the presence of nanometer lengths and anharmonic interactions makes it necessary to rescale the energy and thermal energy of the material according to the invariance of statistical mechanics on the energy/thermal-energy ratio. In addition, considering the effects of the thermal expansion of the material, we managed to derive a formula for the optical band gap energy. Using this formula, the photoluminescence spectra are accounted for by emphasizing that the exciton and free electron-hole pair recombination is a non-thermal statistical process following a Poisson distribution in which the average value of the energy and the full width at half maximum are both directly related to the optical band gap energy. Our results account remarkably well for several experimental data reported in recent literature.

Influence of Material Properties on Surface Chemistry Induced Circular Dichroism in Halide Perovskite: Computational Insights

The chirality transfer phenomenon is attractive for enhancing the optical functionality of nanomaterials by inducing sensitivity to the circular polarization states of photons. An underexplored aspect is how material properties of the achiral semiconductor impact the induced chiroptical signatures. Here we apply atomistic time-dependent density functional theory simulations to investigate the material properties that influence the chiroptical signatures of a lead halide perovskite nanocrystal with a chiral molecule bound to the surface. First, we find that both lattice disorder created by surface strain and halide substitution can increase the chiroptical response of the perovskite quantum dots by an order of magnitude. Both phenomena are attributed to a broadening of the density of the electronically excited states. Second, the intensity of the anisotropy spectra decreases with increasing dot size with a power law decay. Overall, these insights can be used to help guide experimental realization of highly resolvable polarized optical features in semiconducting nanomaterials.

AuBr3 Induces CsPb(Br/I)3 QDs to Self-Assemble into Nanowires

Perovskite quantum dots can form various forms such as nanowires, nanorods, and nanosheets through self-assembly. Nanoscale self-assembly can be used to fabricate materials with excellent device properties. This study introduces AuBr3 into CsPb(Br/I)3 quantum dots, causing them to assemble into nanowires. The nanowires form because part of Au3+ is surface-doped to replace Pb2+, and the [PbX6]4- octahedral structure is distorted. The symmetry of the structural surface is broken, and a dipole-moment-induced field is generated, thus promoting self-assembly. Moreover, the presence of Au nanoparticles (NPs) causes a localized surface plasmon resonance and generates strong van der Waals forces that promote self-assembly. Finally, to test other applications of perovskite nanowires, the solution method is used to prepare films by compounding the sample solution and polystyrene (PS) for backlighted displays.

Thermal Activation of Anti-Stokes Photoluminescence in CsPbBr3 Perovskite Nanocrystals: The Role of Surface Polaron States

Optically driven cooling of a material, or optical refrigeration, is possible when optical up-conversion via anti-Stokes photoluminescence (ASPL) is achieved with near-unity quantum yield. The recent demonstration of optical cooling of CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) has provided a path forward in the development of semiconductor-based optical refrigeration strategies. However, the mechanism of ASPL in CsPbBr3 NCs is not yet settled, and the prospects for cooling technologies strongly depend on details of the mechanism. By analyzing the Arrhenius behavior of ASPL in CsPbBr3 NCs, we investigated the relationship between the average energy gained per photon during up conversion, ΔE, and the thermal activation energy, Ea. We find that Ea is systematically larger than ΔE, and that Ea increases for larger ΔE. We suggest that the additional energetic cost is due to a rearrangement of the crystal lattice as charge carriers pass from surface localized, structurally distinct sub-gap polaron states to the free exciton state during up-conversion. Our interpretation is further corroborated by quantifying the impact of ligand coverage on the NC surface. These findings help inform the development of CsPbBr3 NCs for applications in optical refrigeration.

Amino Acid-Driven Dimensional Reduction of CsPbBr3 Nanocrystals

Inspired by biomineralization, the recent incorporation of organic molecules into inorganic lattices shows interesting optical properties and tunability. We functionalize all inorganic CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) with amino acid (AA) cysteine using the water-hexane interfacial approach. Along with the AA cysteine, we added AuBr3 salt into the aqueous phase, leading to the formation of a Au-cysteine thiolate complex to activate the aqueous to nonaqueous phase transportation of the AA via a molecular shuttle, oleylamine. The interaction between CsPbBr3 PNCs and the Au-cysteine thiolate complex is probed using optical spectroscopy, which reveals dimensional reduction of the parent PNCs to form CsPbBr3 nanoplatelets (NPls) and subsequent phase transformation to CsPb2Br5 NPls. X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy conclusively support the above chemical transformation reaction via interfacial chemistry. We propose a mechanistic insight into the dimensional growth in one direction in the presence of AAs via preferential ligand binding to specific facets, leading to transformation from 3D cubes to 2D NPls, while, presumably, the phase transformation occurs via the CsBr stripping mechanism upon prolonged interaction with water. Since AAs are building blocks for several redox-active complex biological moieties, including proteins, investigation of the interaction of AAs with PNCs may be advantageous since the latter can act as a fluorescent probe for bioimaging application.

Highly Stable MOF-Type Lead Halide Luminescent Ferroelectrics

Lead halide molecular ferroelectrics represent an important class of luminescent ferroelectrics, distinguished by their high chemical and structural tunability, excellent processability and distinctive luminescent characteristics. However, their inherent instability, prone to decomposition upon exposure to moisture and light, hinders their broader ferroelectric applications. Herein, for the first time, we present a series of isoreticular metal-organic framework (MOF)-type lead halide luminescent ferroelectrics, demonstrating exceptional robustness under ambient conditions for at least 15 months and even when subjected to aqueous boiling conditions. Unlike conventional metal-oxo secondary building units (SBUs) in MOFs adopting highly centrosymmetric structure with limited structural distortion, our lead halide-based MOFs occupy structurally deformable [Pb2X]+ (X=Cl-/Br-/I-) SBUs that facilitate a c-axis-biased displacement of Pb2+ centers and substantially contribute to thermoinducible structural transformation. Importantly, this class of MOF-type lead halide ferroelectrics undergo ferroelectric-to-paraelectric phase transitions with remarkably high Curie temperature of up to 505 K, superior to most of molecular ferroelectrics. Moreover, the covalent bonding between phosphorescent organic component and the light-harvesting inorganic component achieves efficient spin-orbit coupling and intersystem crossing, resulting in long-lived afterglow emission. The compelling combination of high stability, ferroelectricity and afterglow emission exhibited by lead halide MOFs opens up many potential opportunities in energy-conversion applications.

Ligand Engineering of Inorganic Lead Halide Perovskite Quantum Dots toward High and Stable Photoluminescence

The ligand engineering of inorganic lead halide perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) is an indispensable strategy to boost their photoluminescence stability, which is pivotal for optoelectronics applications. CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) PQDs exhibit exceptional optical properties, including high color purity and tunable bandgaps. Despite their promising characteristics, environmental sensitivity poses a challenge to their stability. This article reviews the solution-based synthesis methods with ligand engineering. It introduces the impact of factors like humidity, temperature, and light exposure on PQD's instability, as well as in situ and post-synthesis ligand engineering strategies. The use of various ligands, including X- and L-type ligands, is reviewed for their effectiveness in enhancing stability and luminescence performance. Finally, the significant potential of ligand engineering for the broader application of PQDs in optoelectronic devices is also discussed.

Passivating Defects and Constructing Catalytic Sites on CsPbBr3 with ZnBr2 for Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

In recent years, halide perovskites have attracted considerable attention for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. However, the presence of surface defects and the lack of specific catalytic sites for CO2 reduction lead to low photocatalytic performance. In this study, we demonstrate a facile method that post-treats CsPbBr3 with ZnBr2 for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Our experimental and characterization results show that ZnBr2 has a dual role: the Br- ions in ZnBr2 passivate Br vacancies (VBr) on the CsPbBr3 surface, while Zn2+ cations act as catalytic sites for CO2 reduction. The ZnBr2-CsPbBr3 achieves a photocatalytic CO evolution rate of 57 μmol g-1 h-1, which is nearly three times higher than that of the pristine CsPbBr3. The enhanced performance over ZnBr2-CsPbBr3 is mainly due to the decreased VBr and lower reaction energy barrier for CO2 reduction. This work presents an effective method to simultaneously passivate surface defects and introduce catalytic sites, providing useful guidance for the regulation of perovskite photoelectric properties and the design of efficient photocatalysts.

g-C3N4 as ballistic electron transport "Tunnel" in CsPbBr3-based ternary photocatalyst for gas phase CO2 reduction

Perovskite CsPbBr3 quantum dot shows great potential in artificial photosynthesis, attributed to its outstanding optoelectronic properties. Nevertheless, its photocatalytic activity is hindered by insufficient catalytic active sites and severe charge recombination. In this work, a CsPbBr3@Ag-C3N4 ternary heterojunction photocatalyst is designed and synthesized for high-efficiency CO2 reduction. The CsPbBr3 quantum dots and Ag nanoparticles are chemically anchored on the surface of g-C3N4 sheets, forming an electron transfer tunnel from CsPbBr3 quantum dots to Ag nanoparticles via g-C3N4 sheets. The resulting CsPbBr3@Ag-C3N4 ternary photocatalyst, with spatial separation of photogenerated carriers, achieves a remarkable conversion rate of 19.49 μmol·g-1·h-1 with almost 100 % CO selectivity, a 3.13-fold enhancement in photocatalytic activity as compared to CsPbBr3 quantum dots. Density functional theory calculations reveal the rapid CO2 adsorption/activation and the decreased free energy (0.66 eV) of *COOH formation at the interface of Ag nanoparticles and g-C3N4 in contrast to the g-C3N4, leading to the excellent photocatalytic activity, while the thermodynamically favored CO desorption contributes to the high CO selectivity. This work presents an innovative strategy of constructing perovskite-based photocatalyst by modulating catalyst structure and offers profound insights for efficient CO2 conversion.

Stability of Cs2NaBiBr6 and Cs2NaBiCl6

Bismuth-based halide perovskites are nontoxic alternatives to widely studied lead-based perovskites for optoelectronic applications. Here, we synthesized Cs2NaBiCl6 thin films and attempted to synthesize Cs2NaBiBr6 using physical vapor deposition. While Cs2NaBiCl6 forms a stable cubic structure with a 3.4 eV band gap and could be synthesized successfully, Cs2NaBiBr6 does not form and is unstable with respect to dissociation into Cs3-xNaxBi2Br9 and Cs3-xNaxBiBr6. Furthermore, the close X-ray diffraction patterns of Cs3-xNaxBi2Br9 and Cs2NaBiBr6 raise doubts about the previous reports of the latter's formation based on X-ray diffraction alone.

Physical and chemical properties and degradation of MAPbBr3 films on transparent substrates

To date, the potential exploitation of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) in photovoltaic technologies has been significantly hampered by their poor environmental stability. HOIP degradation can be triggered by conventional operational environments, with excessive heating and exposure to oxygen and moisture significantly reducing the performances of HOIP-based solar cells. An imperative need emerges for a thorough investigation on the impact of these factors on the HOIP stability. In this work, the degradation of methylammonium lead bromide (CH3NH3PbBr3) thin films, deposited via spin-coating on indium tin oxide (ITO) and strontium titanate (STO) substrates, was investigated by combining Raman and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopy, as well as optical and fluorescence microscopy. We assessed the physical and chemical degradation of the films occurring under diverse preservation conditions, shedding light on the byproducts emerging from different degradation pathways and on the optimal HOIP preservation conditions.

Long-Lived Interlayer Excitons in WS2/Ruddlesden-Popper Perovskite van der Waals Heterostructures

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and perovskites hold substantial promise for various optoelectronic applications such as light emission, photodetection, and energy harvesting. However, each of these materials possesses certain limitations that can be overcome by synergistically combining them to form heterostructures, thereby unveiling intriguing optical properties. In this study, we present an uncomplicated technique for crafting a van der Waals (vdW) heterojunction comprising monolayer WS2 and a Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) perovskite, namely (TEA)2PbI4. By utilizing ultrafast transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy, we explored the charge carrier dynamics within the WS2/(TEA)2PbI4 heterostructure. Our findings uncover a type-II band alignment in the heterostructure, facilitating rapid (within 260 fs) hole transfer from WS2 to the perovskite and leading to the formation of interlayer excitons (IXs) with a much longer lifetime (728 ps). This strategic approach has the potential to contribute to the development of hybrid systems aimed at achieving high-performance optoelectronic devices.

Tailoring Auger Recombination Dynamics in CsPbI3 Perovskite Nanocrystals via Transition Metal Doping

Auger recombination is a pivotal process for semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs), significantly affecting charge carrier generation and collection in optoelectronic devices. This process depends mainly on the NCs' electronic structures. In our study, we investigated Auger recombination dynamics in manganese (Mn2+)-doped CsPbI3 NCs using transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy combined with theoretical and experimental structural characterization. Our results show that Mn2+ doping accelerates Auger recombination, reducing the biexciton lifetime from 146 to 74 ps with increasing Mn doping concentration up to 10%. This accelerated Auger recombination in Mn-doped NCs is attributed to increased band edge wave function overlap of excitons and a larger density of final states of Auger recombination due to Mn orbital involvement. Moreover, Mn doping reduces the dielectric screening of the excitons, which also contributes to the accelerated Auger recombination. Our study demonstrates the potential of element doping to regulate Auger recombination rates by modifying the materials' electronic structure.

On-Wire Design of Axial Periodic Halide Perovskite Superlattices for High-Performance Photodetection

Precise synthesis of all-inorganic lead halide perovskite nanowire heterostructures and superlattices with designable modulation of chemical compositions is essential for tailoring their optoelectronic properties. Nevertheless, controllable synthesis of perovskite nanostructure heterostructures remains challenging and underexplored to date. Here, we report a rational strategy for wafer-scale synthesis of one-dimensional periodic CsPbCl3/CsPbI3 superlattices. We show that the highly parallel array of halide perovskite nanowires can be prepared roughly as horizontally guided growth on an M-plane sapphire. A periodic patterning of the sapphire substrate enables position-selective ion exchange to obtain highly periodic CsPbCl3/CsPbI3 nanowire superlattices. This patterning is further confirmed by micro-photoluminescence investigations, which show that two separate band-edge emission peaks appear at the interface of a CsPbCl3/CsPbI3 heterojunction. Additionally, compared with the pure CsPbCl3 nanowires, photodetectors fabricated using these periodic heterostructure nanowires exhibit superior photoelectric performance, namely, high ION/IOFF ratio (104), higher responsivity (49 A/W), and higher detectivity (1.51 × 1013 Jones). Moreover, a spatially resolved visible image sensor based on periodic nanowire superlattices is demonstrated with good imaging capability, suggesting promising application prospects in future photoelectronic imaging systems. All these results based on the periodic CsPbCl3/CsPbI3 nanowire superlattices provides an attractive material platform for integrated perovskite devices and circuits.

The Impact of Partial Carrier Confinement on Stimulated Emission in Strongly Confined Perovskite Nanocrystals

Semiconductor lead halide perovskites are excellent candidates for realizing low threshold light amplification due to their tunable and highly efficient luminescence, ease of processing, and strong light-matter interactions. However, most studies on optical gain have addressed bulk films, nanowires, or nanocrystals that exhibit little or no size quantization. Here, we show by means of a multitude of optical spectroscopy methods that small CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (NCs) exhibit a progressive red shift of the band-edge transition upon addition of electron-hole pairs, at least one carrier of which occupies a 2-fold degenerate, delocalized state in agreement with strong confinement. We demonstrate that this combination results in a threshold for biexciton gain, well below the limit of one electron-hole pair on average per NC. On the other hand, both the luminescent lifetime and the optical Stark effect of 4.7 nm CsPbBr3 NCs indicate that the oscillator strength of the band-edge transition is considerably smaller than expected from the band-edge absorption. We assign this discrepancy to a mixed confinement regime, with one delocalized and one localized charge carrier, and show that the concomitant reduction of the oscillator strength for stimulated emission accounts for the surprisingly small material gain observed in small NCs. The conclusion of mixed confinement aligns with studies reporting small and large polarons for holes and electrons in lead halide perovskite nanocrystals, respectively, and creates opportunities for understanding multiexciton photophysics in confined perovskite materials.

Accelerated Discovery of Halide Perovskite Materials via Computational Methods: A Review

Halide perovskites have gained considerable attention in materials science due to their exceptional optoelectronic properties, including high absorption coefficients, excellent charge-carrier mobilities, and tunable band gaps, which make them highly promising for applications in photovoltaics, light-emitting diodes, synapses, and other optoelectronic devices. However, challenges such as long-term stability and lead toxicity hinder large-scale commercialization. Computational methods have become essential in this field, providing insights into material properties, enabling the efficient screening of large chemical spaces, and accelerating discovery processes through high-throughput screening and machine learning techniques. This review further discusses the role of computational tools in the accelerated discovery of high-performance halide perovskite materials, like the double perovskites A2BX6 and A2BB'X6, zero-dimensional perovskite A3B2X9, and novel halide perovskite ABX6. This review provides significant insights into how computational methods have accelerated the discovery of high-performance halide perovskite. Challenges and future perspectives are also presented to stimulate further research progress.

Stable and efficient CsPbI3 quantum-dot light-emitting diodes with strong quantum confinement

Even though lead halide perovskite has been demonstrated as a promising optoelectronic material for next-generation display applications, achieving high-efficiency and stable pure-red (620~635 nm) emission to cover the full visible wavelength is still challenging. Here, we report perovskite light-emitting diodes emitting pure-red light at 628 nm achieving high external quantum efficiencies of 26.04%. The performance is attributed to successful synthesizing strongly confined CsPbI3 quantum dots with good stability. The strong binding 2-naphthalene sulfonic acid ligands are introduced after nucleation to suppress Ostwald ripening, meanwhile, ammonium hexafluorophosphate exchanges long chain ligands and avoids regrowth by strong binding during the purification process. Both ligands enhance the charge transport ability of CsPbI3 quantum dots. The state-of-the-art synthesis of pure red CsPbI3 quantum dots achieves 94% high quantum efficiency, which can maintain over 80% after 50 days, providing a method for synthesizing stable strong confined perovskite quantum dots.

Perovskite Quantum Heterostructure Constructed by Halide Mixing between a Single CsPbI3 Nanocrystal and an Individual CsPbBr3 Microplate

Ion migration is significantly enhanced in lead-halide perovskites with a soft crystal lattice, which can promote the formation of a heterogeneous interface between two such materials with different halide-anion compositions. Here we have deposited a single CsPbI3 nanocrystal (NC) on top of an individual CsPbBr3 microplate to create a mixed-halide CsPbBrxI3-x (0 < x < 3) NC by means of the anion exchange process. The formation of a CsPbBrxI3-x/CsPbBr3 heterostructure is confirmed by the much-enlarged geometric volume of the CsPbBrxI3-x NC as compared to the original CsPbI3 one, as well as by its capability of receiving photogenerated excitons from the CsPbBr3 microplate with a larger bandgap energy. The quantum nature of this heterostructure is reflected from single-photon emission of the composing CsPbBrxI3-x NC, which can also be bulk-like during phase segregation to demonstrate a red shift in the photoluminescence peak that is opposite to the common trend observed in smaller-sized mixed-halide NCs.

Probing the cw-Laser-Induced Fluorescence Enhancement in CsPbBr3 Nanocrystal Thin Films: An Interplay between Photo and Thermal Activation

Perovskite nanocrystals hold significant promise for a wide range of applications, including solar cells, LEDs, photocatalysts, humidity and temperature sensors, memory devices, and low-cost photodetectors. Such technological potential stems from their exceptional quantum efficiency and charge carrier conduction capability. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanisms of photoexcitation, such as phase segregation, annealing, and ionic diffusion, remain insufficiently understood. In this context, we harnessed hyperspectral fluorescence microspectroscopy to advance our comprehension of fluorescence enhancement triggered by UV continuous-wave (cw) laser irradiation of CsPbBr3 colloidal nanocrystal thin films. Initially, we explored the kinetics of fluorescence enhancement and observed that its efficiency (φph) correlates with the laser power (P), following the relationship φph = 7.7⟨P⟩0.47±0.02. Subsequently, we estimated the local temperature induced by the laser, utilizing the finite-difference method framework, and calculated the activation energy (Ea) required for fluorescence enhancement to occur. Our findings revealed a very low activation energy, Ea ∼ 9 kJ/mol. Moreover, we mapped the fluorescence photoenhancement by spatial scanning and real-time static mode to determine its microscale length. Below a laser power of 60 μW, the photothermal diffusion length exhibited nearly constant values of approximately (22 ± 5) μm, while a significant increase was observed at higher laser power levels. These results were ascribed to the formation of nanocrystal superclusters within the film, which involves the interparticle spacing reduction, creating the so-called quantum dot solid configuration along with laser-induced annealing for higher laser powers.

The effective prolongation of the excited-state carrier lifetime of CsPbI2Br with applying strain

In recent years, all-inorganic perovskites CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) have emerged as excellent candidates for solar cells due to their remarkable thermal stability and suitable bandgaps. Among them, CsPbI2Br is a hotspot in perovskite material research currently. Non-radiative electron-hole recombination often leads to significant energy losses, impacting the efficiency of solar cells, so a thorough understanding of carrier recombination mechanisms is crucial. Our work investigated the carrier recombination dynamics in detail and proved that strains can effectively reduce nonradiative recombination. In this study, using first-principles calculations combined with nonadiabatic (NA) molecular dynamics (MD), we demonstrate that applying 2% tensile and 2% compressive strains to CsPbI2Br can modify the bandgap, induce moderate disorder, reduce the overlap of electron-hole wavefunctions, decrease NA coupling, and shorten decoherence time, thereby minimizing non-radiative recombination and extending the carrier lifetime. Especially the 2% tensile strain exhibits more effective control performance, significantly reducing non-radiative electron-hole recombination and extending the charge carrier lifetime to 14.59 ns, nearly five times that of the pristine CsPbI2Br system (3.12 ns). This study reveals the impact mechanism of strain on carrier behavior in perovskite solar cells, providing a new non-chemical strategy for modulating the lifetime of photo-generated carriers and enhancing the efficiency of all-inorganic perovskite solar cells.

Demystifying Triplet-Triplet Annihilation Mechanism in the CsPbI3-Rubrene-DBP Upconversion System

A triplet-triplet annihilation-based upconversion (TTA-UC) system, employing a multichromophore assembly, is convenient to harvest low-energy photons for light energy conversion and optoelectronic applications. The primary donor in the TTA-UC system, typically a low-bandgap semiconductor, captures the low-energy photons and transfers triplet energy to an annihilator dye molecule, which in turn generates a high-energy singlet excited state via T-T annihilation. We have now succeeded in revealing kinetic and mechanistic details of multistep energy transfer processes in the CsPbI3-rubrene-perylene derivative (DBP) films by analyzing time-resolved emission and absorption measurements. The initial triplet energy transfer between CsPbI3 and rubrene occurs with an efficiency of 70% and a rate constant of 9 × 108 s-1. The rubrene triplets undergo T-T annihilation via simple second-order kinetics to form an excited singlet state exhibiting a delayed emission up to 10 μs, which is significantly greater than the intrinsic lifetime of 15 ns. The emitter DBP (a perylene derivative) captures the singlet energy quite effectively and delivers the upconverted emission in sync with the delayed emission of rubrene. The quadratic dependence of DBP emission on the excitation light intensity shows the importance of the T-T annihilation process in dictating the overall upconversion process. The kinetic parameters evaluated in this study, which divulge the critical steps dictating energy transfer in a TTA-UC system, should aid in the design of new light harvesting assemblies.

Stabilization of CsPbBr3 Nanowires Through SU-8 Encapsulation for the Fabrication of Bilayer Microswimmers with Magnetic and Fluorescence Properties

All-inorganic cesium lead halide (CsPbX3, X = Cl, Br, I) perovskite nanocrystals have drawn great interest because of their excellent photophysical properties and potential applications. However, their poor stability in water greatly limited their use in applications that require stable structures. In this work, a facile approach to stabilize CsPbBr3 nanowires is developed by using SU-8 as a protection medium; thereby creating stable CsPbBr3/SU-8 microstructures. Through photolithography and layer-by-layer deposition, CsPbBr3/SU-8 is used to fabricate bilayer achiral microswimmers (BAMs), which consist of a top CsPbBr3/SU-8 layer and a bottom Fe3O4 magnetic layer. Compared to pure CsPbBr3 nanowires, the CsPbBr3/SU-8 shows long-term structural and fluorescence stability in water against ultrasonication treatment. Due to the magnetic layer, the motion of the microswimmers can be controlled precisely under a rotating magnetic field, allowing them to swim at low Reynolds number and tumble or roll on surfaces. Furthermore, CsPbBr3/SU-8 can be used to fabricate various types of planar microstructures with high throughput, high consistency, and fluorescence properties. This work provides a method for the stabilization of CsPbBr3 and demonstrates the potential to mass fabricate planar microstructures with various shapes, which can be used in different applications such as microrobotics.

All-perovskite tandem solar cells: from fundamentals to technological progress

Organic-inorganic perovskite materials have gradually progressed from single-junction solar cells to tandem (double) or even multi-junction (triple-junction) solar cells as all-perovskite tandem solar cells (APTSCs). Perovskites have numerous advantages: (1) tunable optical bandgaps, (2) low-cost, e.g. via solution-processing, inexpensive precursors, and compatibility with many thin-film processing technologies, (3) scalability and lightweight, and (4) eco-friendliness related to low CO2 emission. However, APTSCs face challenges regarding stability caused by Sn2+ oxidation in narrow bandgap perovskites, low performance due to V oc deficit in the wide bandgap range, non-standardisation of charge recombination layers, and challenging thin-film deposition as each layer must be nearly perfectly homogenous. Here, we discuss the fundamentals of APTSCs and technological progress in constructing each layer of the all-perovskite stacks. Furthermore, the theoretical power conversion efficiency (PCE) limitation of APTSCs is discussed using simulations.

Circularly Polarized Luminescence Without External Magnetic Fields from Individual CsPbBr3 Perovskite Quantum Dots

Lead halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs), the latest generation of the colloidal QD family, exhibit outstanding optical properties, which are now exploited as both classical and quantum light sources. Most of their rather exceptional properties are related to the peculiar exciton fine-structure of band-edge states, which can support unique bright triplet excitons. The degeneracy of the bright triplet excitons is lifted with energetic splitting in the order of millielectronvolts, which can be resolved by the photoluminescence (PL) measurements of single QDs at cryogenic temperatures. Each bright exciton fine-structure-state (FSS) exhibits a dominantly linear polarization, in line with several theoretical models based on the sole crystal field, exchange interaction, and shape anisotropy. Here, we show that in addition to a high degree of linear polarization, the individual exciton FSS can exhibit a non-negligible degree of circular polarization even without external magnetic fields by investigating the four Stokes parameters of the exciton fine-structure in individual CsPbBr3 QDs through Stokes polarimetric measurements. We observe a degree of circular polarization up to ∼38%, which could not be detected by using the conventional polarimetric technique. In addition, we found a consistent transition from left- to right-hand circular polarization within the fine-structure triplet manifold, which was observed in magnetic-field-dependent experiments. Our optical investigation provides deeper insights into the nature of the exciton fine structures and thereby drives the yet-incomplete understanding of the unique photophysical properties of this class of QDs for the benefit of future applications in chiral quantum optics.

Recent advances in two-dimensional perovskite materials for light-emitting diodes

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are an indispensable part of our daily life. After being studied for a few decades, this field still has some room for improvement. In this regard, perovskite materials may take the leading role. In recent years, LEDs have become a most explored topic, owing to their various applications in photodetectors, solar cells, lasers, and so on. Noticeably, they exhibit significant characteristics in developing LEDs. The luminous efficiency of LEDs can be significantly enhanced by the combination of a poor illumination LED with low-dimensional perovskite. In 2014, the first perovskite-based LED was illuminated at room temperature. Furthermore, two-dimensional (2D) perovskites have enriched this field because of their optical and electronic properties and comparatively high stability in ambient conditions. Recent and relevant advancements in LEDs using low-dimensional perovskites including zero-dimensional to three-dimensional materials is reported. The major focus of this article is based on the 2D perovskites and their heterostructures (i.e., a combination of 2D perovskites with transition metal dichalcogenides, graphene, and hexagonal boron nitride). In comparison to 2D perovskites, heterostructures exhibit more potential for application in LEDs. State-of-the-art perovskite-based LEDs, current challenges, and prospects are also discussed.

Dual Passivation Strategy for Highly Stable Blue-Luminescent CsPbBr3 Nanoplatelets

Blue-emitting colloidal CsPbX3 (X = Br, Cl, or I) perovskite nanocrystals have emerged as one of the most fascinating materials for optoelectronic applications. However, their applicability is hindered by poor stability and a low photoluminescence efficiency. Herein, highly stable CsPbBr3 nanoplatelets exhibiting intense blue luminescence are fabricated by employing a strategy in which the morphology is regulated and the surface is subjected to dual passivation through the incorporation of zirconium acetylacetonate [Zr(acac)4]. The passivated CsPbBr3 nanocrystals exhibit adjustable light emission from green to dark blue and a controllable morphology from nanocubes (NCs) to nanoplatelets (NPLs) and nanorods accomplished by varying the content of Zr(acac)4. The optimized NPLs are characterized by a bright blue emission with a central wavelength of 459 nm and a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 90%. The addition of Zr(acac)4 in the synthesis of CsPbBr3 induces oriented growth with a two-dimensional morphology. The Zr(acac)4 can repair the surface defects of the nanocrystal surface, and the surface is also capped with the Zr(OH)4 cluster layer. Therefore, the passivated blue-emitting NPLs exhibit outstanding stability compared to that of pristine NPLs during long-term storage and exposure to light. This work provides a novel strategy for fabricating highly stable PNCs with deep-blue emission and widens their potential applications in blue-emitting optoelectronic devices.

Near-Infrared Luminescent Materials Incorporating Rare Earth/Transition Metal Ions: From Materials to Applications

The spotlight has shifted to near-infrared (NIR) luminescent materials emitting beyond 1000 nm, with growing interest due to their unique characteristics. The ability of NIR-II emission (1000-1700 nm) to penetrate deeply and transmit independently positions these NIR luminescent materials for applications in optical-communication devices, bioimaging, and photodetectors. The combination of rare earth metals/transition metals with a variety of matrix materials provides a new platform for creating new chemical and physical properties for materials science and device applications. In this review, the recent advancements in NIR emission activated by rare earth and transition metal ions are summarized and their role in applications spanning bioimaging, sensing, and optoelectronics is illustrated. It started with various synthesis techniques and explored how rare earths/transition metals can be skillfully incorporated into various matrixes, thereby endowing them with unique characteristics. The discussion to strategies of enhancing excitation absorption and emission efficiency, spotlighting innovations like dye sensitization and surface plasmon resonance effects is then extended. Subsequently, a significant focus is placed on functionalization strategies and their applications. Finally, a comprehensive analysis of the challenges and proposed strategies for rare earth/transition metal ion-doped near-infrared luminescent materials, summarizing the insights of each section is provided.

Controlling Nucleation and Crystallization of CsPbI3 Perovskites for Efficient Inverted Solar Cells

The unfavorable morphology and high crystallization temperature (Tc) of inorganic perovskites pose a significant challenge to their widespread application in photovoltaics. In this study, an effective approach is proposed to enhance the morphology of cesium lead triiodide (CsPbI3) while lowering its Tc. By introducing dimethylammonium acetate into the perovskite precursor solution, a rapid nucleation stage is facilitated, and significantly enhances the crystal growth of the intermediate phase at low annealing temperatures, followed by a slow crystal growth stage at higher annealing temperatures. This results in a uniform and dense morphology in CsPbI3 perovskite films with enhanced crystallinity, simultaneously reducing the Tc from 200 to 150 °C. Applying this approach in positive-intrinsic-negative (p-i-n) inverted cells yields a high power conversion efficiency of 19.23%. Importantly, these cells exhibit significantly enhanced stability, even under stress at 85 °C.

Surficial Host-Guest Responsive CsPbBr3 Perovskite Nanocrystals for Programmable Multi-Level Information Encryption

The design of smart stimuli-responsive photoluminescent materials capable of multi-level encryption and complex information storage is highly sought after in the current information era. Here, a novel adamantyl-capped CsPbBr3 (AD-CsPbBr3) perovskite NCs, along with its supramolecular host-guest assembly partner a modified β-CD (mCD), mCD@AD-CsPbBr3, are designed and prepared. By dispersing these two materials in different solvents, namely, AD-CsPbBr3 in toluene, mCD@AD-CsPbBr3 in toluene, and mCD@AD-CsPbBr3 in methanol, the three solutions exhibit diverse photoluminescence (PL) turn-on/off or PL discoloration response upon supramolecular stimulus. Based on these responses, a proof-of-principle programmable Multi-Level Photoluminescence Encoding System (MPLES) is established. Three types of four-level and three types of three-level information encoding are achieved by the system. A layer-by-layer four-level information encryption and decryption as well as a two-level encrypted 3D code are successfully achieved.
