Three-atom-wide gold quantum rods with periodic elongation and strongly polarized excitons

Atomically precise control over anisotropic nanoclusters constitutes a grand challenge in nanoscience. In this work, we report our success in achieving a periodic series of atomically precise gold quantum rods (abbrev. Au QRs) with unusual excitonic properties. These QRs possess hexagonal close-packed kernels with a constant three-atom diameter but increasing aspect ratios (ARs) from 6.3 to 18.7, all being protected by the same thiolate (SR) ligand. The kernels of the QRs are in a Au1-(Au3)n-Au1 configuration (where n is the number of Au3 layers) and follow a periodic elongation with a uniform Au18(SR)12 increment consisting of four Au3 layers. These Au QRs possess distinct HOMO-LUMO gaps (Eg = 0.6 to 1.3 eV) and exhibit strongly polarized excitonic transition along the longitudinal direction, resulting in very intense absorption in the near-infrared (800 to 1,700 nm). While excitons in gapped systems and plasmons in gapless systems are distinctly different types of excitations, the strongly polarized excitons in Au QRs surprisingly exhibit plasmon-like behaviors manifested in the shape-induced polarization, very intense absorption (~106 M-1 cm-1), and linear scaling relations with the AR, all of which resemble the behaviors of conventional metallic-state Au nanorods (i.e., gapless systems), but the QRs possess distinct gaps and very long excited-state lifetimes (10 to 2,122 ns), which hold promise in applications such as near-infrared solar energy utilization, hot carrier generation and transfer. The observation of plasmon-like behaviors from single-electron transitions in Au QRs elegantly bridges the distinct realms of single-electron and collective-electron excitations and may stimulate more research on excitonics and plasmonics.

MXene-antenna electrode with collective multipole resonances

Two-dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXene-s) are the focus of extensive research due to their exceptional potential for practical applications. We study nanostructured MXene layers to design photodetector electrodes and increase their response through hot-electron generation. We demonstrate that the lattice arrangement plays a crucial role in exciting strong optical resonances in the nanostructured MXene, specifically Ti3C2Tx, despite its high loss and weak optical resonances in an isolated antenna. We use numerical simulations and analytical calculations with coupled dipole-quadrupole lattice sums for designing photodetector electrodes. We also provide proof-of-concept experimental demonstration of the enhanced resonances even for the case of lossy materials. We report on the excitation of strong lattice resonances of the MXene antenna array with enhanced absorption, resulting in a more efficient generation of hot electrons. Our findings reveal that a multi-period array of MXene antennas can improve narrowband and broadband photodetector functionality. We propose highly efficient absorbers based on MXene metasurfaces and transforming electrodes into hybrid photodetectors using MXene antennas to enhance their performance.

Plasmonic Alloys Enhanced Metabolic Fingerprints for the Diagnosis of COPD and Exacerbations

Accurate diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and exacerbations by metabolic biomarkers enables individualized treatment. Advanced metabolic detection platforms rely on designed materials. Here, we design mesoporous PdPt alloys to characterize metabolic fingerprints for diagnosing COPD and exacerbations. As a result, the optimized PdPt alloys enable the acquisition of metabolic fingerprints within seconds, requiring only 0.5 μL of native plasma by laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry owing to the enhanced electric field, photothermal conversion, and photocurrent response. Machine learning decodes metabolic profiles acquired from 431 individuals, achieving a precise diagnosis of COPD with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.904 and an accurate distinction between stable COPD and acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD) with an AUC of 0.951. Notably, eight metabolic biomarkers identified accurately discriminate AECOPD from stable COPD while providing valuable information on disease progress. Our platform will offer an advanced nanoplatform for the management of COPD, complementing standard clinical techniques.

Understanding the Behaviors of Plasmon-Induced Hot Carriers and Their Applications in Photocatalysis

Photocatalysis driven by plasmon-induced hot carriers has been gaining increasing attention. Recent studies have demonstrated that plasmon-induced hot carriers can directly participate in photocatalytic reactions, leading to great enhancement in solar energy conversion efficiency, by improving the catalytic activity or changing selectivity. Nevertheless, the utilization efficiency of hot carriers remains unsatisfactory. Therefore, how to correctly understand the generation and transfer process of hot carriers, as well as accurately differentiate between the possible mechanisms, have become a key point of attention. In this review, we overview the fundamental processes and mechanisms underlying hot carrier generation and transport, followed by highlighting the importance of hot carrier monitoring methods and related photocatalytic reactions. Furthermore, possible strategies for the further characterization of plasmon-induced hot carriers and boosting their utilization efficiency have been proposed. We hope that a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental behaviors of hot carriers can aid in designing more efficient photocatalysts for plasmon-induced photocatalytic reactions.

Electrogenerated chemiluminescence imaging of plasmon-induced electrochemical reactions at single nanocatalysts

This study explores plasmon-induced electrochemical reactions on single nanoparticles using electrogenerated chemiluminescence microscopy (ECLM). Under laser irradiation, real-time screening showed lower plasmon-induced reaction efficiency for bimetallic Au@Pt nanoparticles compared to monometallic Au nanoparticles. ECLM offers a high-throughput imaging and precise quantitative approach for analyzing photo-electrochemical conversion at single nanoparticle level, valuable for both theoretical exploration and optimization of plasmonic nanocatalysts.

Tailoring Hot-Carrier Distributions of Plasmonic Nanostructures through Surface Alloying

Alloyed metal nanoparticles are a promising platform for plasmonically enabled hot-carrier generation, which can be used to drive photochemical reactions. Although the non-plasmonic component in these systems has been investigated for its potential to enhance catalytic activity, its capacity to affect the photochemical process favorably has been underexplored by comparison. Here, we study the impact of surface alloy species and concentration on hot-carrier generation in Ag nanoparticles. By first-principles simulations, we photoexcite the localized surface plasmon, allow it to dephase, and calculate spatially and energetically resolved hot-carrier distributions. We show that the presence of non-noble species in the topmost surface layer drastically enhances hot-hole generation at the surface at the expense of hot-hole generation in the bulk, due to the additional d-type states that are introduced to the surface. The energy of the generated holes can be tuned by choice of the alloyant, with systematic trends across the d-band block. Already low surface alloy concentrations have a large impact, with a saturation of the enhancement effect typically close to 75% of a monolayer. Hot-electron generation at the surface is hindered slightly by alloying, but here a judicious choice of the alloy composition allows one to strike a balance between hot electrons and holes. Our work underscores the promise of utilizing multicomponent nanoparticles to achieve enhanced control over plasmonic catalysis and provides guidelines for how hot-carrier distributions can be tailored by designing the electronic structure of the surface through alloying.

All-in-one, all-optical logic gates using liquid metal plasmon nonlinearity

Electronic processors are reaching the physical speed ceiling that heralds the era of optical processors. Multifunctional all-optical logic gates (AOLGs) of massively parallel processing are of great importance for large-scale integrated optical processors with speed far in excess of electronics, while are rather challenging due to limited operation bandwidth and multifunctional integration complexity. Here we for the first time experimentally demonstrate a reconfigurable all-in-one broadband AOLG that achieves nine fundamental Boolean logics in a single configuration, enabled by ultrabroadband (400-4000 nm) plasmon-enhanced thermo-optical nonlinearity (TONL) of liquid-metal Galinstan nanodroplet assemblies (GNAs). Due to the unique heterogeneity (broad-range geometry sizes, morphology, assembly profiles), the prepared GNAs exhibit broadband plasmonic opto-thermal effects (hybridization, local heating, energy transfer, etc.), resulting in a huge nonlinear refractive index under the order of 10-4-10-5 within visual-infrared range. Furthermore, a generalized control-signal light route is proposed for the dynamic TONL modulation of reversible spatial-phase shift, based on which nine logic functions are reconfigurable in one single AOLG configuration. Our work will provide a powerful strategy on large-bandwidth all-optical circuits for high-density data processing in the future.

Ultrasound-activated piezo-hot carriers trigger tandem catalysis coordinating cuproptosis-like bacterial death against implant infections

Implant-associated infections due to the formation of bacterial biofilms pose a serious threat in medical healthcare, which needs effective therapeutic methods. Here, we propose a multifunctional nanoreactor by spatiotemporal ultrasound-driven tandem catalysis to amplify the efficacy of sonodynamic and chemodynamic therapy. By combining piezoelectric barium titanate with polydopamine and copper, the ultrasound-activated piezo-hot carriers transfer easily to copper by polydopamine. It boosts reactive oxygen species production by piezoelectrics, and facilitates the interconversion between Cu2+ and Cu+ to promote hydroxyl radical generation via Cu+ -catalyzed chemodynamic reactions. Finally, the elevated reactive oxygen species cause bacterial membrane structure loosening and DNA damage. Transcriptomics and metabolomics analysis reveal that intracellular copper overload restricts the tricarboxylic acid cycle, promoting bacterial cuproptosis-like death. Therefore, the polyetherketoneketone scaffold engineered with the designed nanoreactor shows excellent antibacterial performance with ultrasound stimulation and promotes angiogenesis and osteogenesis on-demand in vivo.

Solar-Driven Continuous CO2 Reduction to CO and CH4 using Heterogeneous Photothermal Catalysts: Recent Progress and Remaining Challenges

The urgent need to reduce the carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere and keep the effects of climate change manageable has brought the concept of carbon capture and utilization to the forefront of scientific research. Amongst the promising pathways for this conversion, sunlight-powered photothermal processes, synergistically using both thermal and non-thermal effects of light, have gained significant attention. Research in this field focuses both on the development of catalysts and continuous-flow photoreactors, which offer significant advantages over batch reactors, particularly for scale-up. Here, we focus on sunlight-driven photothermal conversion of CO2 to chemical feedstock CO and CH4 as synthetic fuel. This review provides an overview of the recent progress in the development of photothermal catalysts and continuous-flow photoreactors and outlines the remaining challenges in these areas. Furthermore, it provides insight in additional components required to complete photothermal reaction systems for continuous production (e. g., solar concentrators, sensors and artificial light sources). In addition, our review emphasizes the necessity of integrated collaboration between different research areas, like chemistry, material science, chemical engineering, and optics, to establish optimized systems and reach the full potential of this technology.

Facilely Fabricated Zero-Bias Silicon-Based Plasmonic Photodetector in the Near-Infrared Region with a Schottky Barrier Properly Controlled by Nanoalloys

Plasmonic Schottky devices have attracted considerable attention for use in practical applications based on photoelectric conversion, because they enable light to be harvested below the bandgap of semiconductors. In particular, silicon-based (Si) plasmonic Schottky devices have great potential for useful photodetection in the near-infrared region. However, the internal quantum efficiency (IQE) values of previously reported devices are low because the Schottky barrier is excessively high. Here, we are the first to develop AuAg nanoalloy-n-type Si plasmonic Schottky devices by cathodic arc plasma deposition. Interestingly, it is found that a novel nanostructure, which leads to the improvement of responsivities, is formed. Moreover, these plasmonic nanostructures can be fabricated in only ∼1 min. The fabricated AuAg nanoparticle-film structure enables proper control of the Schottky barrier height and increases the area of the Schottky interface for electron transfer. As a result, the considerably enhanced IQE of our device at a telecommunication wavelength of 1310 nm (1550 nm) without external bias is 4.6 (6.5) times higher than those in previous reports, and these responsivities are a record high. This approach can be applied to realize efficient photodetection in the NIR region and extend the use of light below the bandgap of semiconductors. This paves the way for future application advancements in a variety of fields, including photodetection, imaging, photovoltaics, and photochemistry.

Rapid quantitative PCR equipment using photothermal conversion of Au nanoshell

The emergence of infectious diseases worldwide necessitates rapid and precise diagnostics. Using gold nanoshells in the PCR mix, we harnessed their unique photothermal properties in the near-infrared regime to attain efficient heating, reaching ideal photothermal PCR cycle temperature profile. Our photothermal PCR method expedited DNA amplification while retaining its detection sensitivity. Combining photothermal quantitative PCR with real-time fluorometry and non-invasive temperature measurement, we could amplify the target DNA within just 25 min, with a minimum detectable DNA amount of 50 picograms. This innovation in photothermal qPCR, leveraging the photothermal properties of gold nanoshells, will pave the way for immediate point-of-care diagnostics of nucleic acid biomarkers.

Probing local charge transfer processes of Pt-Au heterodimers in plasmon-enhanced electrochemistry by CO stripping techniques

CO-stripping experiments are employed as a highly structure-sensitive and in situ strategy to explore the mechanisms of plasmon-enhanced electrooxidation reactions. By using Pt-Au heterodimers as a model catalyst, the plasmon-induced current and potential changes on Pt and Au sites can be identified and explained.

Probing the Interaction between Individual Metal Nanocrystals and Two-Dimensional Metal Oxides via Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy

Metal nanoparticles can photosensitize two-dimensional metal oxides, facilitating their electrical connection to devices and enhancing their abilities in catalysis and sensing. In this study, we investigated how individual silver nanoparticles interact with two-dimensional tin oxide and antimony-doped indium oxide using electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). The measurement of the spectral line width of the longitudinal plasmon resonance of the nanoparticles in absence and presence of 2D materials allowed us to quantify the contribution of chemical interface damping to the line width. Our analysis reveals that a stronger interaction (damping) occurs with 2D antimony-doped indium oxide due to its highly homogeneous surface. The results of this study offer new insight into the interaction between metal nanoparticles and 2D materials.

Mechanism of Plasmon-Induced Catalysis of Thiolates and the Impact of Reaction Conditions

The conversion of the thiols 4-aminothiophenol (ATP) and 4-nitrothiophenol (NTP) can be considered as one of the standard reactions of plasmon-induced catalysis and thus has already been the subject of numerous studies. Currently, two reaction pathways are discussed: one describes a dimerization of the starting material yielding 4,4'-dimercaptoazobenzene (DMAB), while in the second pathway, it is proposed that NTP is reduced to ATP in HCl solution. In this combined experimental and theoretical study, we disentangled the involved plasmon-mediated reaction mechanisms by carefully controlling the reaction conditions in acidic solutions and vapor. Motivated by the different surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra of NTP/ATP samples and band shifts in acidic solution, which are generally attributed to water, additional experiments under pure gaseous conditions were performed. Under such acidic vapor conditions, the Raman data strongly suggest the formation of a hitherto not experimentally identified stable compound. Computational modeling of the plasmonic hybrid systems, i.e., regarding the wavelength-dependent character of the involved electronic transitions of the detected key intermediates in both reaction pathways, confirmed the experimental finding of the new compound, namely, 4-nitrosothiophenol (TP*). Tracking the reaction dynamics via time-dependent SERS measurements allowed us to establish the link between the dimer- and monomer-based pathways and to suggest possible reaction routes under different environmental conditions. Thereby, insight at the molecular level was provided with respect to the thermodynamics of the underlying reaction mechanism, complementing the spectroscopic results.

Designer Nanoreactors for Bioorthogonal Catalysis

The evolutionary complexity of compartmentalized biostructures (such as cells and organelles) endows life-sustaining multistep chemical cascades and intricate living functionalities. Relatively, within a very short time span, a synthetic paradigm has resulted in tremendous growth in controlling the materials at different length scales (molecular, nano, micro, and macro), improving mechanistic understanding and setting the design principals toward different compositions, configurations, and structures, and in turn fine-tuning their optoelectronic and catalytic properties for targeted applications. Bioorthogonal catalysis offers a highly versatile toolkit for biochemical modulation and the capability to perform new-to-nature reactions inside living systems, endowing augmented functions. However, conventional catalysts have limitations to control the reactions under physiological conditions due to the hostile bioenvironment. The present account details the development of bioapplicable multicomponent designer nanoreactors (NRs), where the compositions, morphologies, interfacial active sites, and microenvironments around different metal nanocatalysts can be precisely controlled by novel nanospace-confined chemistries. Different architectures of porous, hollow, and open-mouth silica-based nano-housings facilitate the accommodation, protection, and selective access of different nanoscale metal-based catalytic sites. The modular porosity/composition, optical transparency, thermal insulation, and nontoxicity of silica are highly useful. Moreover, large macropores or cavities can also be occupied by enzymes (for chemoenzymatic cascades) and selectivity enhancers (for stimuli-responsive gating) along with the metal nanocatalysts. Further, it is crucial to selectively activate and control catalytic reactions by a remotely operable biocompatible energy source. Integration of highly coupled plasmonic (Au) components having few-nanometer structural features (gaps, cavities, and junctions as electromagnetic hot-spots) endows an opportunity to efficiently harness low-power NIR light and selectively supply energy to the interfacial catalytic sites through localized photothermal and electronic effects. Different plasmonically integrated NRs with customizable plasmonic-catalytic components, cavities inside bilayer nanospaces, and metal-laminated nanocrystals inside hollow silica can perform NIR-/light-induced catalytic reactions in complex media including living cells. In addition, magnetothermia-induced NRs by selective growth of catalytic metals on a pre-installed superparamagnetic iron-oxide core inside a hollow-porous silica shell endowed the opportunity to apply AMF as a bioorthogonal stimulus to promote catalytic reactions. By combining "plasmonic-catalytic" and "magnetic-catalytic" components within a single NR, two distinct reaction steps can be desirably controlled by two energy sources (NIR light and AMF) of distinct energy regimes. The capability to perform multistep organic molecular transformations in harmony with the natural living system will reveal novel reaction schemes for in cellulo synthesis of active drug and bioimaging probes. Well-designed nanoscale discrete architectures of NRs can facilitate spatiotemporal control over abiotic chemical synthesis without adversely affecting the cell viability. However, in-depth understanding of heterogeneous surface catalytic reactions, rate induction mechanisms, selectivity control pathways, and targeted nanobio interactions is necessary. The broad field of biomedical engineering can hugely benefit from the aid of novel nanomaterials with chemistry-based designs and the synthesis of engineered NRs performing unique bioorthogonal chemistry functions.

Virial coefficients of the uniform electron gas from path-integral Monte Carlo simulations

The properties of plasmas in the low-density limit are described by virial expansions. Analytical expressions are known from Green's function approaches only for the first three virial coefficients. Accurate path-integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) simulations have recently been performed for the uniform electron gas, allowing the virial expansions to be analyzed and interpolation formulas to be derived. The exact expression for the second virial coefficient is used to test the accuracy of the PIMC simulations and the range of validity of the interpolation formula of Groth et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 135001 (2017)0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.119.135001], and we discuss the fourth virial coefficient, which is not exactly known yet. Combining PIMC simulations with benchmarks from exact virial expansion results would allow us to obtain more accurate representations of the equation of state for parameter ranges of conditions which are of interest, e.g., for helioseismology.

Key Role of Asymmetric Photothermal Effect in Selectively Chiral Switching of Plasmonic Dimer Driven by Circularly Polarized Light

Strong interaction between circularly polarized light and chiral plasmonic nanostructures can enable controllable asymmetric photophysical processes, such as selective chiral switching of a plasmonic nanorod-dimer. Here, we uncover the underlying physics that governs this chiral switching by theoretically investigating the interplay between asymmetric photothermal and optomechanical effects. We find that the photothermally induced local temperature rises could play a key role in activating the dynamic chiral configurations of a plasmonic dimer due to the temperature-sensitive molecular linkages located at the gap region. Importantly, different temperature rises caused by the opposite handedness of light could facilitate selective chiral switching of the plasmonic dimer driven by asymmetric optical torques. Our analyses on the wavelength-dependent selectively chiral switching behaviors are in good agreement with the experimental observations. This work contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the physical mechanism involved in the experimentally designed photoresponsive plasmonic nanosystems for practical applications.

A Mechanism Underpinning the Bioenergetic Metabolism-Regulating Function of Gold Nanocatalysts

Bioenergetic deficits are known to be significant contributors to neurodegenerative diseases. Nevertheless, identifying safe and effective means to address intracellular bioenergetic deficits remains a significant challenge. This work provides mechanistic insights into the energy metabolism-regulating function of colloidal Au nanocrystals, referred to as CNM-Au8, that are synthesized electrochemically in the absence of surface-capping organic ligands. When neurons are subjected to excitotoxic stressors or toxic peptides, treatment of neurons with CNM-Au8 results in dose-dependent neuronal survival and neurite network preservation across multiple neuronal subtypes. CNM-Au8 efficiently catalyzes the conversion of an energetic cofactor, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide hydride (NADH), into its oxidized counterpart (NAD+ ), which promotes bioenergy production by regulating the intracellular level of adenosine triphosphate. Detailed kinetic measurements reveal that CNM-Au8-catalyzed NADH oxidation obeys Michaelis-Menten kinetics and exhibits pH-dependent kinetic profiles. Photoexcited charge carriers and photothermal effect, which result from optical excitations and decay of the plasmonic electron oscillations or the interband electronic transitions in CNM-Au8, are further harnessed as unique leverages to modulate reaction kinetics. As exemplified by this work, Au nanocrystals with deliberately tailored structures and surfactant-free clean surfaces hold great promise for developing next-generation therapeutic agents for neurodegenerative diseases.

Experimental Investigation of the Thermal Emission Cross Section of Nanoresonators Using Hierarchical Poisson-Disk Distributions

Effective cross sections of nano-objects are fundamental properties that determine their ability to interact with light. However, measuring them for individual resonators directly and quantitatively remains challenging, particularly because of the very low signals involved. Here, we experimentally measure the thermal emission cross section of metal-insulator-metal nanoresonators using a stealthy hyperuniform distribution based on a hierarchical Poisson-disk algorithm. In such distributions, there are no long-range interactions between antennas, and we show that the light emitted by such metasurfaces behaves as the sum of cross sections of independent nanoantennas, enabling direct retrieval of the single resonator contribution. The emission cross section at resonance is found to be on the order of λ_{0}^{2}/3, a value that is nearly 3 times larger than the theoretical maximal absorption cross section of a single particle, but remains smaller than the maximal extinction cross section. This measurement technique can be generalized to any single resonator cross section, and we also apply it to a lossy dielectric layer.

Ultrafast hot-carrier dynamics in ultrathin monocrystalline gold

Applications in photodetection, photochemistry, and active metamaterials and metasurfaces require fundamental understanding of ultrafast nonthermal and thermal electron processes in metallic nanosystems. Significant progress has been recently achieved in synthesis and investigation of low-loss monocrystalline gold, opening up opportunities for its use in ultrathin nanophotonic architectures. Here, we reveal fundamental differences in hot-electron thermalisation dynamics between monocrystalline and polycrystalline ultrathin (down to 10 nm thickness) gold films. Comparison of weak and strong excitation regimes showcases a counterintuitive unique interplay between thermalised and non-thermalised electron dynamics in mesoscopic gold with the important influence of the X-point interband transitions on the intraband electron relaxation. We also experimentally demonstrate the effect of hot-electron transfer into a substrate and the substrate thermal properties on electron-electron and electron-phonon scattering in ultrathin films. The hot-electron injection efficiency from monocrystalline gold into TiO2, approaching 9% is measured, close to the theoretical limit. These experimental and modelling results reveal the important role of crystallinity and interfaces on the microscopic electronic processes important in numerous applications.

Peeking into the Femtosecond Hot-Carrier Dynamics Reveals Unexpected Mechanisms in Plasmonic Photocatalysis

Plasmonic-driven photocatalysis may lead to reaction selectivity that cannot be otherwise achieved. A fundamental role is played by hot carriers, i.e., electrons and holes generated upon plasmonic decay within the metal nanostructure interacting with molecular species. Understanding the elusive microscopic mechanism behind such selectivity is a key step in the rational design of hot-carrier reactions. To accomplish that, we present state-of-the-art multiscale simulations, going beyond density functional theory, of hot-carrier injections for the rate-determining step of a photocatalytic reaction. We focus on carbon dioxide reduction, for which it was experimentally shown that the presence of a rhodium nanocube under illumination leads to the selective production of methane against carbon monoxide. We show that selectivity is due to a (predominantly) direct hole injection from rhodium to the reaction intermediate CHO. Unexpectedly, such an injection does not promote the selective reaction path by favoring proper bond breaking but rather by promoting bonding of the proper molecular fragment to the surface.

Recent progress in SERS monitoring of photocatalytic reactions

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a powerful analytical technique renowned for its ultra-high sensitivity. Extensive research in SERS has led to the development of a wide range of SERS substrates, including plasmonic metals, semiconductors, metal organic frameworks, and their assemblies. Some of these materials are also excellent photocatalysts, and by taking advantage of their bifunctional characteristics, the photocatalytic processes that occur on their surface can be monitored in situ via SERS. This provides us with unique opportunities to gain valuable insights into the intricate details of the photocatalytic processes that are challenging to access using other techniques. In this review, we highlight key development in in situ and/or real-time SERS-tracking of photocatalytic reactions. We begin by providing a brief account of recent developments in SERS substrates, followed by discussions on how SERS can be used to elucidate crucial aspects of photocatalytic processes, including: (1) the influence of the surrounding media on charge carrier extraction; (2) the direction of charge carrier transfer; (3) the pathway of photocatalytic activation; and (4) differentiation between the effects of photo-thermal and energetic electrons. Additionally, we discuss the benefits of tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) due to the ability to achieve high-spatial-resolution measurements. Finally, we address major challenges and propose potential directions for the future of SERS monitoring of photocatalytic reactions. By leveraging the capabilities of SERS, we can uncover new insights into photocatalytic processes, paving the way for advancements in sustainable energy and environmental remediation.

Tailoring linear and nonlinear plasmons of metal/MoS2/metal nanostructures

We investigated the linear and nonlinear response of the localized surface plasmons (LSPs) and surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in metal and MoS2 nanostructures. The results show that the response of LSPs and SPPs has an important influence on the energy exchange. SPPs with unique non-radiative characteristics can be used as energy recovery tanks to reuse the radiated energy of LSPs and promote the production of hot carriers. The energy exchange through plasmon modes can promote the transfer of hot electrons in the Au grating, the MoS2 layer, and the metal film. The fundamental field induces the increase of the second harmonic wave by introducing the second-order nonlinear source. In addition, the evolution of the lifetime of linear and nonlinear plasmonic modes is also investigated to study the underlying mechanism of the micro process in the plasmonic-photonic interaction. The plasmonic energy exchanging configuration overcomes the challenge by utilizing hot carriers. It is instructive in terms of improving the linear and nonlinear performance of plasmonic opto-electronic devices.

Modulation of photo-induced Raman enhancement in Ag nanoparticles deposited on nanometer-thick TiO2 films. An interplay between plasmonic properties and irradiation energy

Photo-induced enhanced Raman spectroscopy (PIERS) is an innovative technology that offers additional enhancement in Raman signal compared to surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). In this study, we fabricated nanohybrids consisting of silver nanoparticles on an ultra-thin anatase film using a photoreduction method. This approach allowed for the controllable synthesis of SERS and PIERS nanoplatforms, characterized by oval-shaped nanoparticles, yet varying in size and surface coverage, leading to distinct plasmonic properties. A mere 15-minute UV pre-treatment with low photon density already initiated significant charge-transfer processes followed by Raman spectra under non-resonant conditions of the molecule and estimated by enhancement factor in the range of 12---17. This phenomenon was observed for a molecular monolayer of a thiol derivative. Not only boosting electron migration appeared. This unique interface of the Ag-anatase composite undoubtedly contributed to extended relaxation times of photo-induced enhancement. Furthermore, we investigated how plasmonic and morphological features of the nanoplatforms, in conjunction with UV and Vis illumination, modulated the migration of photoinduced electrons from the semiconductor to the metal. These findings highlighted the variety of processes contributing to the creation of efficient PIERS materials.

Rapid classification of SARS-CoV-2 variant strains using machine learning-based label-free SERS strategy

The spread of COVID-19 over the past three years is largely due to the continuous mutation of the virus, which has significantly impeded global efforts to prevent and control this epidemic. Specifically, mutations in the amino acid sequence of the surface spike (S) protein of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) have directly impacted its biological functions, leading to enhanced transmission and triggering an immune escape effect. Therefore, prompt identification of these mutations is crucial for formulating targeted treatment plans and implementing precise prevention and control measures. In this study, the label-free surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology combined with machine learning (ML) algorithms provide a potential solution for accurate identification of SARS-CoV-2 variants. We establish a SERS spectral database of SARS-CoV-2 variants and demonstrate that a diagnostic classifier using a logistic regression (LR) algorithm can provide accurate results within 10 min. Our classifier achieves 100% accuracy for Beta (B.1.351/501Y.V2), Delta (B.1.617), Wuhan (COVID-19) and Omicron (BA.1) variants. In addition, our method achieves 100% accuracy in blind tests of positive and negative human nasal swabs based on the LR model. This method enables detection and classification of variants in complex biological samples. Therefore, ML-based SERS technology is expected to accurately discriminate various SARS-CoV-2 variants and may be used for rapid diagnosis and therapeutic decision-making.

A recursive cell multipole method for atomistic electrodynamics models

For large plasmonic nanoparticles, retardation effects become important once their length becomes comparable to the wavelength of light. However, most models do not incorporate retardation effects due to the high computational cost of solving for the optical properties of large atomistic electrodynamics systems. In this work, we derive and implement a recursive fast multipole method (FMM) in Cartesian coordinates that includes retardation effects. In this method, higher-order electrodynamic interaction tensors used for the FMM are calculated recursively, thus greatly reducing the implementation complexity of the model. This method allows for solving of the optical properties of large atomistic nanoparticles with controlled accuracy; in practice, taking the expansion to the fifth order provides a good balance of accuracy and computational time. Finally, we study the effects retardation has on the near- and far-field properties of large plasmonic nanoparticles with over a million atoms using this method. We specifically focus on nanorods and their dimers, which are known to generate highly confined fields in their junctions. In the future, this method can be applied to simulations in which accurate near-field properties are required, such as surface-enhanced Raman scattering.

Hydrogen evolution with hot electrons on a plasmonic-molecular catalyst hybrid system

Plasmonic systems convert light into electrical charges and heat, mediating catalytic transformations. However, there is ongoing controversy regarding the involvement of hot carriers in the catalytic process. In this study, we demonstrate the direct utilisation of plasmon hot electrons in the hydrogen evolution reaction with visible light. We intentionally assemble a plasmonic nanohybrid system comprising NiO/Au/[Co(1,10-Phenanthrolin-5-amine)2(H2O)2], which is unstable at water thermolysis temperatures. This assembly limits the plasmon thermal contribution while ensuring that hot carriers are the primary contributors to the catalytic process. By combining photoelectrocatalysis with advanced in situ spectroscopies, we can substantiate a reaction mechanism in which plasmon-induced hot electrons play a crucial role. These plasmonic hot electrons are directed into phenanthroline ligands, facilitating the rapid, concerted proton-electron transfer steps essential for hydrogen generation. The catalytic response to light modulation aligns with the distinctive profile of a hot carrier-mediated process, featuring a positive, though non-essential, heat contribution.

Leveraging plasmonic hot electrons to quench defect emission in metal-semiconductor nanostructured hybrids

Modeling light-matter interactions in hybrid plasmonic materials is vital to their widening relevance from optoelectronics to photocatalysis. Here, we explore photoluminescence (PL) from ZnO nanorods (ZNRs) embedded with gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). A progressive increase in Au NP concentration introduces significant structural disorder and defects in ZNRs, which paradoxically quenches defect related visible PL while intensifying the near band edge (NBE) emission. Under UV excitation, the simulated semi-classical model realizes PL from ZnO with sub-bandgap defect states, eliciting visible emissions that are absorbed by Au NPs to generate a non-equilibrium hot carrier distribution. The photo-stimulated hot carriers, transferred to ZnO, substantially modify its steady-state luminescence, reducing NBE emission lifetime and altering the abundance of ionized defect states, finally reducing visible emission. The simulations show that the change in the interfacial band bending at the Au-ZnO interface under optical illumination facilitates charge transfer between the components. This work provides a general foundation to observe and model the hot carrier dynamics and strong light-matter interactions in hybrid plasmonic systems.

Molecular Orbital Insights into Plasmon-Induced Methane Photolysis

As a promising way to reduce the temperature for conventional thermolysis, plasmon-induced photocatalysis has been utilized for the dehydrogenation of methane. Here we probe the microscopic dynamic mechanism for plasmon-induced methane dissociation over a tetrahedral Ag20 nanoparticle with molecular orbital insights using time-dependent density functional theory. We ingeniously built the relationship between the chemical bonds and molecular orbitals via Hellmann-Feynman forces. The time- and energy-resolved photocarrier analysis shows that the indirect hot hole transfer from the Ag nanoparticle to methane dominates the photoreaction at low laser intensity, due to the strong hybridization of the Ag nanoparticle and CH4 orbitals, while indirect and direct charge transfer coexist to facilitate methane dissociation in intense laser fields. Our findings can be used to design novel methane photocatalysts and highlight the broad prospects of the molecular orbital approach for adsorbate-substrate systems.

Cathodoluminescence Nanoscopy: State of the Art and Beyond

Cathodoluminescence (CL) nanoscopy is proven to be a powerful tool to explore nanoscale optical properties, whereby free electron beams achieve a spatial resolution far beyond the diffraction limit of light. With developed methods for the control of electron beams and the collection of light, the dimension of information that CL can access has been expanded to include polarization, momentum, and time, holding promise to provide invaluable insights into the study of materials and optical near-field dynamics. With a focus on the burgeoning field of CL nanoscopy, this perspective outlines the recent advancements and applications of this technique, as illustrated by the salient experimental works. In addition, as an outlook for future research, several appealing directions that may bring about developments and discoveries are highlighted.

Research Advances in Wood Composites in Applications of Industrial Wastewater Purification and Solar-Driven Seawater Desalination

In recent years, the ecosystem has been seriously affected by sewage discharge and oil spill accidents. A series of issues (such as the continuous pollution of the ecological environment and the imminent exhaustion of freshwater resources) are becoming more and more unmanageable, resulting in a crisis of water quality and quantity. Therefore, studies on industrial wastewater purification and solar-driven seawater desalination based on wood composites have been widely considered as an important development direction. This paper comprehensively analyzes and summarizes the applications of wood composites in the fields of solar-driven seawater desalination and polluted water purification. In particular, the present situation of industrial wastewater containing heavy metal ions, microorganisms, aromatic dyes and oil stains and related problems of solar-driven seawater desalination are comprehensively analyzed and summarized. Generally, functional nanomaterials are loaded into the wood cell wall, from which lignin and hemicellulose are selectively removed. Alternatively, functional groups are modified on the basis of the molecular structure of the wood microchannels. Due to its three-dimensional (3D) pore structure and low thermal conductivity, wood is an ideal substrate material for industrial wastewater purification and solar-driven seawater desalination. Based on the study of objective conditions such as the preparation process, modification method and selection of photothermal conversion materials, the performances of the wood composites in filtration, adsorption and seawater desalination are analyzed in detail. In addition, this work points out the problems and possible solutions in applying wood composites to industrial wastewater purification and solar-driven seawater desalination.

Quantum Plasmonics in Sub-Atom-Thick Optical Slots

We show using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) that light can be confined into slot waveguide modes residing between individual atomic layers of coinage metals, such as gold. As the top atomic monolayer lifts a few Å off the underlying bulk Au (111), ab initio electronic structure calculations show that for gaps >1.5 Å, visible light squeezes inside the empty slot underneath, giving optical field distributions 2 Å thick, less than the atomic diameter. Paradoxically classical electromagnetic models are also able to reproduce the resulting dispersion for these subatomic slot modes, where light reaches in-plane wavevectors ∼2 nm-1 and slows to <10-2c. We explain the success of these classical dispersion models for gaps ≥1.5 Å due to a quantum-well state forming in the lifted monolayer in the vicinity of the Fermi level. This extreme trapping of light may explain transient "flare" emission from plasmonic cavities where Raman scattering of metal electrons is greatly enhanced when subatomic slot confinement occurs. Such atomic restructuring of Au under illumination is relevant to many fields, from photocatalysis and molecular electronics to plasmonics and quantum optics.

Quantitative Microscale Thermometry in Droplets Loaded with Gold Nanoparticles

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are increasingly used for their thermoplasmonic properties, i.e., their ability to convert light energy into heat through plasmon resonance. However, measuring temperature gradients generated at the microscale by assemblies of AuNPs remains challenging, especially for random 3D distributions of AuNPs. Here, we introduce a label-free thermometry approach, combining quantitative wavefront microscopy and numerical simulations, to infer the heating power dissipated by a 3D model system consisting of emulsion microdroplets loaded with AuNPs. This approach gives access to the temperature reached in the droplets under laser irradiation without the need for extrinsic calibration. This versatile thermometry method is promising for noninvasive temperature measurements in various 3D microsystems involving AuNPs as colloidal heat sources, including photothermal drug delivery systems.

Monte Carlo Approach to the Evaluation of Nanoparticles Size Distribution from the Analysis of UV-Vis-NIR Spectra

How nice would it be to obtain the size distribution of a nanoparticle dispersion fast and without electron microscope measurements? UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometry offers a very rapid solution; however, the spectra interpretation can be very challenging and needs to take into account the size distribution of the nanoparticles and agglomeration. This work suggests a Monte Carlo method for rapid fitting UV-Vis-NIR spectra using one or two size distributions starting from a dataset of precomputed spectra based on Mie theory. The proposed algorithm is tested on copper nanoparticles produced with Pulsed Laser Ablation in Liquid and on gold nanoparticles from the literature. The fitted distribution results are comparable with Transmission Electron Microscope results and, in some cases, reflect the presence of agglomeration.

Colloidal Plasmonic TiN Nanoparticles for Efficient Solar Seawater Desalination

Transferring traditional plasmonic noble metal nanomaterials from the laboratory to industrial production has remained challenging due to the high price of noble metals. The development of cost-effective non-noble-metal alternatives with outstanding plasmonic properties has therefore become essential. Herein, we report on the gram-scale production of differently shaped TiN nanoparticles with strong plasmon-enabled broadband light absorption, including differently sized TiN nanospheres, nanobipyramids, and nanorod arrays. The TiN nanospheres and nanobipyramids are further coembedded in highly porous poly(vinyl alcohol) films to function as a photothermal material for solar seawater desalination. A seawater evaporation rate of 3.8 kg m-2 h-1 is achieved, which marks the record performance among all plasmonic solar seawater desalination systems reported so far. The removal percentage of phenol reaches 98.3%, which is attributed to the joint action of the excellent photocatalytic ability and the superhydrophilicity of the porous TiN-based composite film.

Photo-enhanced dehydrogenation of formic acid on Pd-based hybrid plasmonic nanostructures

Coupling visible light with Pd-based hybrid plasmonic nanostructures has effectively enhanced formic acid (FA) dehydrogenation at room temperature. Unlike conventional heating to achieve higher product yield, the plasmonic effect supplies a unique surface environment through the local electromagnetic field and hot charge carriers, avoiding unfavorable energy consumption and attenuated selectivity. In this minireview, we summarized the latest advances in plasmon-enhanced FA dehydrogenation, including geometry/size-dependent dehydrogenation activities, and further catalytic enhancement by coupling local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) with Fermi level engineering or alloying effect. Furthermore, some representative cases were taken to interpret the mechanisms of hot charge carriers and the local electromagnetic field on molecular adsorption/activation. Finally, a summary of current limitations and future directions was outlined from the perspectives of mechanism and materials design for the field of plasmon-enhanced FA decomposition.

Multifunctional Nanofibrous Scaffolds Capable of Localized Delivery of Theranostic Nanoparticles for Postoperative Cancer Management

Postoperative recovery of cancer patients can be affected by complications, such as tissue dysfunction or disability caused by tissue resection, and also cancer recurrence resulting from residual cancer cells. Despite impressive progress made for tissue engineering scaffolds that assist tissue regeneration for postoperative cancer patients, the majority of existing tissue engineering scaffolds still lack functions for monitoring and killing residual cancer cells, if there are any, upon their detection. In this study, multifunctional scaffolds that comprise biodegradable nanofibers and core-shell structured microspheres encapsulated with theranostic nanoparticles (NPs) are developed. The multifunctional scaffolds possess an extracellular matrix-like nanofibrous architecture and soft tissue-like mechanical properties, making them excellent tissue engineering patch candidates for assisting in the repair and regeneration of tissues at the cancerous sites after surgery. Furthermore, they are capable of localized delivery of theranostic NPs upon quick degradation of core-shell structured microspheres that contain theranostic NPs. Leveraging on folic acid-mediated ligand-receptor binding, surface-enhanced Raman scattering activity, and near-infrared-responsive photothermal effect of the theranostic gold NPs (AuNPs) delivered locally, the multifunctional scaffolds display excellent active targeting, diagnosis, and photothermal therapy functions for cancer cells, showing great promise for adaptive postoperative cancer management.

Multifunctional Solar Evaporator with Adjustable Island Structure Improves Performance and Salt Discharge Capacity of Desalination

Interfacial solar steam generation (ISSG) is the main method to get fresh water from seawater or wastewater. The balance between evaporation rate and salt resistance is still a major challenge for ISSG. Herein, a wood aerogel island solar evaporator (WAISE) with tunable surface structure and wettability by synthesizing poly(n-isopropylacrylamide)-modified multi-walled carbon nanotube photothermal layers. Compared to dense surface structure evaporators, interfacial moisture transport, thermal localization, and surface water vapor diffusion of WAISE are greatly promoted, and the evaporation rate of WAISE increased by 87.64%. WAISE allows for record performance of 200 h continuous operation in 20% NaCl solution without salt accumulation. In addition, the photo-thermal-electric device is developed based on WAISE with continuous water purification, power generation, and irrigation functions. This work provides a new direction for the development of multifunctional water purification systems.

Theory and modeling of light-matter interactions in chemistry: current and future

Light-matter interaction not only plays an instrumental role in characterizing materials' properties via various spectroscopic techniques but also provides a general strategy to manipulate material properties via the design of novel nanostructures. This perspective summarizes recent theoretical advances in modeling light-matter interactions in chemistry, mainly focusing on plasmon and polariton chemistry. The former utilizes the highly localized photon, plasmonic hot electrons, and local heat to drive chemical reactions. In contrast, polariton chemistry modifies the potential energy curvatures of bare electronic systems, and hence their chemistry, via forming light-matter hybrid states, so-called polaritons. The perspective starts with the basic background of light-matter interactions, molecular quantum electrodynamics theory, and the challenges of modeling light-matter interactions in chemistry. Then, the recent advances in modeling plasmon and polariton chemistry are described, and future directions toward multiscale simulations of light-matter interaction-mediated chemistry are discussed.

A retinomorphic neuron for artificial vision and iris accommodation

The iris of an eye automatically optimizes the amount of light that strikes the retina by accommodating the intensity of ambient light. Here, we describe a retinomorphic neuron using neuromorphic photoreceptors for artificial vision and iris accommodation that mimics the biological structure and processing functions of retinal neurons for light sensing and signal transduction. The system consists of a neuromorphic photoreceptor, an electrochromic device as a light filter, and a spike-generation unit. In particular, the Au nanoparticle (NP) decorated ITO fiber photoreceptor with a well-aligned array structure is able to rely on its own light-tunable synaptic plasticity and the plasmon-enhanced light absorption. Therefore, it allows real-time feedback about light intensity, emits a higher-frequency electrical stimulus to stronger light, flash, or prolonged light illumination time, and drives the electrochromic filter to work, allowing mild light to pass through. Compared with traditional artificial irises or artificial photoreceptors, our design introduces neural pathways and neuromorphic devices, which are closer to biological functions in simulation. To our knowledge, this is the first time that a retinal neuron with neuromorphic photoreceptors has been used for artificial iris vision. Furthermore, we demonstrate direct and consensual pupillary light reflexes. The design of artificial iris vision has potential applications in biomimetic engineering, smart interaction, and visual prostheses.

Autonomous nanorobots with powerful thrust under dry solid-contact conditions by photothermal shock

Nanorobotic motion on solid substrates is greatly hindered by strong nanofriction, and powerful nanomotors‒the core components for nanorobotic motion‒are still lacking. Optical actuation addresses power and motion control issues simultaneously, while conventional technologies with small thrust usually apply to fluid environments. Here, we demonstrate micronewton-thrust nanomotors that enable the autonomous nanorobots working like conventional robots with precise motion control on dry surfaces by a photothermal-shock technique. We build a pulsed laser-based actuation and trapping platform, termed photothermal-shock tweezers, for general motion control of metallic nanomaterials and assembled nanorobots with nanoscale precision. The thrust-to-weight ratios up to 107 enable nanomotors output forces to interact with external micro/nano-objects. Leveraging machine vision and deep learning technologies, we assemble the nanomotors into autonomous nanorobots with complex structures, and demonstrate multi-degree-of-freedom motion and sophisticated functions. Our photothermal shock-actuation concept fundamentally addresses the nanotribology challenges and expands the nanorobotic horizon from fluids to dry solid surfaces.

Role of Plasmonic Antenna in Hot Carrier-Driven Reactions on Bimetallic Nanostructures

Noble metal nanostructures can efficiently harvest electromagnetic radiation, which, in turn, is used to generate localized surface plasmon resonances. Surface plasmons decay, producing hot carriers, that is, short-lived species that can trigger chemical reactions on metallic surfaces. However, noble metal nanostructures catalyze only a very small number of chemical reactions. This limitation can be overcome by coupling such nanostructures with catalytic-active metals. Although the role of such catalytically active metals in plasmon-driven catalysis is well-understood, the mechanistics of a noble metal antenna in such chemistry remains unclear. In this study, we utilize tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, an innovative nanoscale imaging technique, to investigate the rates and yields of plasmon-driven reactions on mono- and bimetallic gold- and silver-based nanostructures. We found that silver nanoplates (AgNPs) demonstrate a significantly higher yield of 4-nitrobenzenehtiol to p,p'-dimercaptoazobisbenzene (DMAB) reduction than gold nanoplates (AuNPs). We also observed substantially greater yields of DMAB on silver-platinum and silver-palladium nanoplates (Ag@PtNPs and Ag@PdNPs) compared to their gold analogues, Au@PtNPs and Au@PdNPs. Furthermore, Ag@PtNPs exhibited enhanced reactivity in 4-mercatophenylmethanol to 4-mercaptobenzoic acid oxidation compared to Au@PtNPs. These results showed that silver-based bimetallic nanostructures feature much greater reactivity compared to their gold-based analogues.

Engineering electrode interfaces for telecom-band photodetection in MoS2/Au heterostructures via sub-band light absorption

Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) layered semiconductors possess immense potential in the design of photonic, electronic, optoelectronic, and sensor devices. However, the sub-bandgap light absorption of TMD in the range from near-infrared (NIR) to short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) is insufficient for applications beyond the bandgap limit. Herein, we report that the sub-bandgap photoresponse of MoS2/Au heterostructures can be robustly modulated by the electrode fabrication method employed. We observed up to 60% sub-bandgap absorption in the MoS2/Au heterostructure, which includes the hybridized interface, where the Au layer was applied via sputter deposition. The greatly enhanced absorption of sub-bandgap light is due to the planar cavity formed by MoS2 and Au; as such, the absorption spectrum can be tuned by altering the thickness of the MoS2 layer. Photocurrent in the SWIR wavelength range increases due to increased absorption, which means that broad wavelength detection from visible toward SWIR is possible. We also achieved rapid photoresponse (~150 µs) and high responsivity (17 mA W-1) at an excitation wavelength of 1550 nm. Our findings demonstrate a facile method for optical property modulation using metal electrode engineering and for realizing SWIR photodetection in wide-bandgap 2D materials.

Bimetallic copper palladium nanorods: plasmonic properties and palladium content effects

Cu is an inexpensive alternative plasmonic metal with optical behaviour comparable to Au but with much poorer environmental stability. Alloying with a more stable metal can improve stability and add functionality, with potential effects on the plasmonic properties. Here we investigate the plasmonic behaviour of Cu nanorods and Cu-CuPd nanorods containing up to 46 mass percent Pd. Monochromated scanning transmission electron microscopy electron energy-loss spectroscopy first reveals the strong length dependence of multiple plasmonic modes in Cu nanorods, where the plasmon peaks redshift and narrow with increasing length. Next, we observe an increased damping (and increased linewidth) with increasing Pd content, accompanied by minimal frequency shift. These results are corroborated by and expanded upon with numerical simulations using the electron-driven discrete dipole approximation. This study indicates that adding Pd to nanostructures of Cu is a promising method to expand the scope of their plasmonic applications.

Nanomaterials Solutions for Contraception: Concerns, Advances, and Prospects

Preventing unintentional pregnancy is one of the goals of a global public health policy to minimize effects on individuals, families, and society. Various contraceptive formulations with high effectiveness and acceptance, including intrauterine devices, hormonal patches for females, and condoms and vasectomy for males, have been developed and adopted over the last decades. However, distinct breakthroughs of contraceptive techniques have not yet been achieved, while the associated long-term adverse effects are insurmountable, such as endocrine system disorder along with hormone administration, invasive ligation, and slowly restored fertility after removal of intrauterine devices. Spurred by developments of nanomaterials and bionanotechnologies, advanced contraceptives could be fulfilled via nanomaterial solutions with much safer and more controllable and effective approaches to meet various and specific needs for women and men at different reproductive stages. Nanomedicine techniques have been extended to develop contraceptive methods, such as the targeted drug delivery and controlled release of hormone using nanocarriers for females and physical stimulation assisted vasectomy using functional nanomaterials via photothermal treatment or magnetic hyperthermia for males. Nanomaterial solutions for advanced contraceptives offer significantly improved biosafety, noninvasive administration, and controllable reversibility. This review summarizes the nanomaterial solutions to female and male contraceptives including the working mechanisms, clinical concerns, and their merits and demerits. This work also reviewed the nanomaterials that have been adopted in contraceptive applications. In addition, we further discuss safety considerations and future perspectives of nanomaterials in nanostrategy development for next-generation contraceptives. We expect that nanomaterials would potentially replace conventional materials for contraception in the near future.

Plasmon enabled Claisen rearrangement with sunlight

Plasmonic-heat generated from the solar irradiation of gold nanoparticles is used as the thermal energy source for the Claisen rearrangement of allyl phenyl ether to 2-allylphenol, which is conventionally performed with electrical heating at 250 °C. The use of a closed reactor enables the physical separation of the reactants from the source of plasmonic-heat, thereby preventing the interference of the hot-charge carriers in the plasmon-driven Claisen rearrangement. In this way, the sole effect of plasmonic-heat in driving a high temperature organic transformation is demonstrated. Our study reveals the prospects of plasmonic nanostructures in conducting energy intensive chemical synthesis in a sustainable fashion.

Plasmon induced hot carrier generation in a pyridine@Au20 composite

Using time-dependent density functional theory calculations, we have investigated the generation of hot carriers (HCs) in a system comprising a pyridine molecule and a tetrahedral Au20 plasmonic cluster. Our findings indicate that the decay of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) induced in the pyridine@Au20 system by a laser pulse facilitates the direct transfer of hot electrons from the occupied states of the Au20 cluster to the unoccupied molecular orbitals of pyridine. Notably, we have identified that the interparticle gap distance between the Au20 cluster and the pyridine molecule plays a critical role in controlling the generation of HCs. By precisely controlling the interaction between the plasmonic cluster and the molecule, we can effectively manipulate the energy distribution of the generated HCs. These insights have the potential to drive advancements in the development of more efficient systems for plasmonic catalysis.

Gate-controlled suppression of light-driven proton transport through graphene electrodes

Recent experiments demonstrated that proton transport through graphene electrodes can be accelerated by over an order of magnitude with low intensity illumination. Here we show that this photo-effect can be suppressed for a tuneable fraction of the infra-red spectrum by applying a voltage bias. Using photocurrent measurements and Raman spectroscopy, we show that such fraction can be selected by tuning the Fermi energy of electrons in graphene with a bias, a phenomenon controlled by Pauli blocking of photo-excited electrons. These findings demonstrate a dependence between graphene's electronic and proton transport properties and provide fundamental insights into molecularly thin electrode-electrolyte interfaces and their interaction with light.

Quantifying the ultrafast and steady-state molecular reduction potential of a plasmonic photocatalyst

Plasmonic materials are promising photocatalysts as they are well suited to convert light into hot carriers and heat. Hot electron transfer is suggested as the driving force in many plasmon-driven reactions. However, to date, there are no direct molecular measures of the rate and yield of plasmon-to-molecule electron transfer or energy of these electrons on the timescale of plasmon decay. Here, we use ultrafast and spectroelectrochemical surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy to quantify electron transfer from a plasmonic substrate to adsorbed methyl viologen molecules. We observe a reduction yield of 2.4 to 3.5% on the picosecond timescale, with plasmon-induced potentials ranging from [Formula: see text]3.1 to [Formula: see text]4.5 mV. Excitingly, some of these reduced species are stabilized and persist for tens of minutes. This work provides concrete metrics toward optimizing material-molecule interactions for efficient plasmon-driven photocatalysis.

Advances in photothermal regulation strategies: from efficient solar heating to daytime passive cooling

Photothermal regulation concerning solar harvesting and repelling has recently attracted significant interest due to the fast-growing research focus in the areas of solar heating for evaporation, photocatalysis, motion, and electricity generation, as well as passive cooling for cooling textiles and smart buildings. The parallel development of photothermal regulation strategies through both material and system designs has further improved the overall solar utilization efficiency for heating/cooling. In this review, we will review the latest progress in photothermal regulation, including solar heating and passive cooling, and their manipulating strategies. The underlying mechanisms and criteria of highly efficient photothermal regulation in terms of optical absorption/reflection, thermal conversion, transfer, and emission properties corresponding to the extensive catalog of nanostructured materials are discussed. The rational material and structural designs with spectral selectivity for improving the photothermal regulation performance are then highlighted. We finally present the recent significant developments of applications of photothermal regulation in clean energy and environmental areas and give a brief perspective on the current challenges and future development of controlled solar energy utilization.
