Pyrene-based metal organic frameworks: from synthesis to applications

Fabrication of environmentally-friendly composited sponges for efficient removal of fluoroquinolones antibiotics from water

In this study, two environmentally-friendly macroscopically formal (PVF) composited sponges (PL and PLS) functionalized with lignin and lignosulfonate, respectively, were fabricated by a one-step mechanical foaming method. PLS, obtained with the fed mass ratio of 0.3:1 lignosulfonate to PVF in the preparation process, possessed a large specific surface area of approximately 22.396 m²/g, a three-dimensional skeleton structure with a skeletal density of 3.236 g/cm³, and 0.338 mmol/g of acidic oxygen-containing groups. Thus, it showed a high adsorption capacity of 0.16-0.24 mmol/g in removing seven antibiotics, of the popular fluoroquinolones (FQs) family from water. The contributions of hydrogen bonding, electrostatic attraction (EA) and π-π electron donor-acceptor interaction to the adsorption of FQs onto the PL and PLS sponges were analyzed systematically by investigating the pH dependence of the adsorption capacity, and the changes in adsorption of two sub structural analogs of FQs as molecular probes, and by performing theoretical calculations. The EA between the acidic oxygen-containing groups on the sponges and the amino groups of FQs played a dominant role in adsorption in near neutral conditions, leading to a superior adsorption performance for PLS. Overall, the composited sponges have the advantages of simple production, environmental-friendliness, convenient recycle, and low cost, which renders them potentially viable in treating real wastewater containing FQs.

Highly Fluorescent Dyes Containing Conformationally Restrained Pyrazolylpyrene (Pyrazoolympicene) Chromophore

The triflic-acid-promoted cyclization of 1-phenyl-3-(pyren-1-yl)-1H-pyrazole-4-carbaldehyde afforded a mixture of 9-phenyl-7,9-dihydropyreno (10,1-fg)indazole and 9-phenylpyreno(10,1-fg)indazole-7(9H)-one, readily separable by column chromatography. Both products contained a rigid six-ringed pyrazoolympicene backbone and exhibited bright fluorescence in chloroform solution and a weak fluorescence in the solid state. DFT and TD DFT calculations revealed that the lowest excited state (S₁) of these compounds is populated via HOMO →LUMO π-π * transition. Furthermore, the synthesized compounds behaved as weak bases and their emission spectra showed substantial changes upon protonation. Therefore, they may be of interest for sensing of strongly acidic fluorophore environments.

Water-Stable Nickel Metal-Organic Framework Nanobelts for Cocatalyst-Free Photocatalytic Water Splitting to Produce Hydrogen

Development of water-stable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for promising visible-light-driven photocatalytic water splitting is highly desirable but still challenging. Here we report a novel p-type nickel-based MOF single crystal (Ni-TBAPy-SC) and its exfoliated nanobelts (Ni-TBAPy-NB) that can bear a wide range of pH environment in aqueous solution. Both experimental and theoretical results indicate a feasible electron transfer from the H₄TBAPy ligand (light-harvesting center) to the Ni-O cluster node (catalytic center), on which water splitting to produce hydrogen can be efficiently driven free of cocatalyst. Compared to the single crystal, the exfoliated two-dimensional (2D) nanobelts show more efficient charge separation due to its shortened charge transfer distance and remarkably enhanced active surface areas, resulting in 164 times of promoted water reduction activity. The optimal H₂ evolution rate on the nanobelt reaches 98 μmol h^-1 (ca. 5 mmol h^-1 g^-1) showing benchmarked apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 8.0% at 420 nm among water-stable MOFs photocatalysts.

Photoinduced Organic Reactions by Employing Pyrene Catalysts

Pyrene is one of the most attractive polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in photochemistry. Based on their redox properties, pyrenes have potential as photosensitizers. In this review, we summarize recent developments in pyrene-catalyzed photoinduced organic reactions occurring via energy transfer or single-electron transfer based on the excited state of the pyrene.

Toward Optimal Photocatalytic Hydrogen Generation from Water Using Pyrene-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials for the photocatalytic H2 evolution reaction (HER) from water. To find the optimal MOF for a photocatalytic HER, one has to consider many different factors. For example, studies have emphasized the importance of light absorption capability, optical band gap, and band alignment. However, most of these studies have been carried out on very different materials. In this work, we present a combined experimental and computation study of the photocatalytic HER performance of a set of isostructural pyrene-based MOFs (M-TBAPy, where M = Sc, Al, Ti, and In). We systematically studied the effects of changing the metal in the node on the different factors that contribute to the HER rate (e.g., optical properties, the band structure, and water adsorption). In addition, for Sc-TBAPy, we also studied the effect of changes in the crystal morphology on the photocatalytic HER rate. We used this understanding to improve the photocatalytic HER efficiency of Sc-TBAPy, to exceed the one reported for Ti-TBAPy, in the presence of a co-catalyst.

Pyrene-Functionalized Fluorescent Nanojars: Synthesis, Mass Spectrometric, and Photophysical Studies

Nanojars are a class of supramolecular coordination complexes based on pyrazolate, Cu2+, and OH- ions that self-assemble around highly hydrophilic anions and serve as efficient anion binding and extraction agents. In this work, the synthesis, characterization, and photophysical properties of pyrene-functionalized fluorescent nanojars are presented. Three pyrene derivatives, 4-(pyren-1-yl)pyrazole (HL1), 4-(5-(pyren-1-yl)pent-4-yn-1-yl)pyrazole (HL2), and 4-(3-(pyrazol-4-yl)propyl)-1-(pyren-1-yl)-1,2,3-triazole (HL3), and the corresponding nanojars were synthesized and characterized using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Electronic absorption, steady-state, and time-resolved fluorescence measurements were carried out to understand the interaction between the pyrene fluorophore and copper nanojars. Optical absorption measurements have shown minor ground state interaction between the fluorophore and nanojars. The fluorescence of pyrene is significantly quenched when attached to nanojars, suggesting strong contribution from the paramagnetic Cu2+ ions. Significant static quenching is observed in the case of L1, when pyrene is directly bound to the nanojar, whereas in the case of L2 and L3, when pyrene is attached to the nanojars using flexible tethers, both static and dynamic quenching are observed.

Highly Selective Chloromethanes Detection Based on Quartz Crystal Microbalance Gas Sensors with Ba-MOFs

Three new metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), {(CH₃NH₃)₃[Ba₂(TTHA)(NO₃)(H₂O)₂]}·2H₂O (1), {(CH₃NH₃)₄[Ba₃(HTTHA)₂(H₂O)₇]}·3H₂O (2), and [Ba₇(TTHA)₂(NO₃)₂(H₂O)₁₀]·2H₂O (3) (H₆TTHA = 1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triamineh-exaacetic acid) have been synthesized and characterized. The sensing properties of 1-3 were explored with regard to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) technique. The results indicated that 1 and 2 have a much higher selectivity and response to chloromethanes (CH₂Cl₂, CHCl₃, and CCl₄) compared with H₂O, CH₃OH, CH₃CH₂OH, CH₃CN, (CH₃)₂CO, C₆H₆, C₆H₅CH₃, C₆H₅CH₂CH₃, and C₆H₅Cl at room temperature. Furthermore, 1 and 2 sensing film also exhibits excellent reversibility and stability, and the response and recovery times are almost within 10 s. 3 displays a lower response and poor selectivity to the above VOCs. The significant difference may be caused by their different structural characteristics. The Ba²⁺ ions are all decacoordinated in 1 and 2, while Ba²⁺ ions have more open metal sites in 3. So, the high selectivity and response of 1 and 2 may be due to the exchange of coordination water molecules with chloromethanes and possible electrostatic effects between (CH₃NH₃)⁺ cations and chloromethanes containing more electronegative Cl atoms. DFT calculation results show that the bond energy of Ba-Cl and Ba-O is not much different, so chloromethanes at high concentrations may exchange coordination water to form weak Ba···Cl interactions and show higher response values. 3 has no obvious VOCs selectivity and higher response due to more open sites of Ba²⁺ ions and smaller pore size. This work develops a fast and effective method to detect chloromethanes, providing a new opportunity for designing QCM gas sensors coated with different MOF materials.

Conformational Adaptation of β-Peptide Foldamers for the Formation of Metal-Peptide Frameworks

Metal-coordinated frameworks derived from small peptidic ligands have received much attention thanks to peptides' vast structural and functional diversity. Various peptides with partial conformational preferences have been used to build metal-peptide frameworks, however, the use of conformationally constrained β-peptide foldamers has not been explored yet. Herein we report the first metal-coordination-mediated assembly of β-peptide foldamers with 12-helical folding propensity. The coordination of Ag⁺ to the terminal pyridyl moieties afforded a set of metal-peptide frameworks with unique entangled topologies. Interestingly, formation of the network structures was accompanied by notable conformational distortions of the foldamer ligands. As the first demonstration of new metal-peptide frameworks built from modular β-peptide foldamers, we anticipate that this work will be an important benchmark for further structural evolution and mechanistic investigation.

Syntheses, design strategies, and photocatalytic charge dynamics of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs): a catalyzed photo-degradation approach towards organic dyes
