Abstract
OBJECTIVES To establish cultures of human lacrimal gland from patient-derived, biopsy-sized, tissue specimens. METHODS Tissue was obtained after surgical removal from patients without dry eye disease undergoing routine procedures. Samples were subjected to mechanical and enzymatic digestion and resulting cell suspensions were plated onto collagen-coated glass coverslips and grown for up to 21 days. Cultures were analysed by immunocytochemistry and light microscopy, and resultant cellular distributions were compared to those in sections of fixed human lacrimal gland tissue. RESULTS Dissociation of biopsy-sized pieces of human lacrimal gland and seeding onto coated surfaces allowed development of a mixed population of cells in vitro. Within 7-14 days, cellular aggregation was observed and by 21 days many cells had organised themselves into distinct three-dimensional complexes. Immunohistochemistry revealed a heterogeneous population of cells, including epithelial, myoepithelial, mesenchymal and progenitor cells. Some of the epithelia labelled positively for lysozyme and lactoferrin. CONCLUSIONS Collection and dissociation of biopsy-sized pieces of human lacrimal gland leads to a cellular preparation that can proliferate in vitro and organise into three-dimensional structures. This is the first report detailing that biopsy-collected specimens of human lacrimal gland can be used to establish cell cultures.

Abstract
Dry eye disease is one of the most common ophthalmological complaints and is defined by a loss of tear film homeostasis. Establishing a diagnosis can be time-consuming, resource demanding and unpleasant for the patient. In this pilot study, we retrospectively included clinical data from 431 patients with dry eye disease examined in the Norwegian Dry Eye Clinic to evaluate how artificial intelligence algorithms perform on clinical data related to dry eye disease. The data was processed and subjected to numerous machine learning classification algorithms with the aim to predict decreased tear film break-up time. Moreover, feature selection techniques (information gain and information gain ratio) were applied to determine which clinical factors contribute most to an unstable tear film. The applied machine learning algorithms outperformed baseline classifications performed with ZeroR according to included evaluation metrics. Clinical features such as ocular surface staining, meibomian gland expressibility and dropout, blink frequency, osmolarity, meibum quality and symptom score were recognized as important predictors for tear film instability. We identify and discuss potential limitations and pitfalls.

Efficacy of Nonpreserved Sodium Hyaluronate Artificial Tears in Dry Eye Disease Patients Treated with Prostaglandin Analogs for Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma: A Prospective, Nonrandomized, Open-Label Pilot Study. Abstract
Purpose Dry eye disease (DED) can be triggered using preserved ophthalmic formulations or prostaglandin analogs. In this prospective, nonrandomized, open-label pilot study, we evaluated the efficacy of a 0.15% hyaluronic acid (HA) nonpreserved ophthalmic formulation in decreasing DED symptoms in patients with open-angle glaucoma treated with prostaglandin analogs. Methods 30 patients with DED receiving chronic treatment with prostaglandin analogs for primary open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension were administered ophthalmic formulations 3 times daily for 12 weeks. Foreign body sensation, burning, stinging, dryness, pain, frequency of symptoms, Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), conjunctival hyperaemia, corneal fluorescein staining (CFS), tear film break-up time (TBUT), best-corrected visual acuity, Schirmer test results, and 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire score between the baseline and 4 and 12 weeks were evaluated. Results The analysis shows that all primary endpoints improved; in particular, burning sensation and the frequency of symptoms after 4 and 12 weeks of treatment (p < 0.001) and dryness and pain after 12 weeks of treatment (p < 0.001 and p=0.03, respectively) were reduced significantly. Secondary outcomes confirmed the positive results, with a statistically significant change in the OSDI score and CFS between the baseline and 4 (p=0.02 and p < 0.001, respectively) or 12 weeks (both p < 0.001) and TBUT after 4 weeks (p=0.01). Conjunctival hyperaemia improved in both eyes in >90% of cases at 12 weeks of treatment. Conclusion The present study shows that the ophthalmic formulation containing 0.15% HA has a promising beneficial effect on reducing the signs and symptoms of DED in patients treated with prostaglandin analogs.

Moxibustion with Walnut Shell Spectacles Could Improve the Objective Symptoms and Tear Film Stability of Patients with Dry Eye Disease: A Randomized Controlled Trial. Abstract
Objectives This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and acceptability of moxibustion with walnut shell spectacles in treating dry eye disease (DED) patients and to provide treatment options. Methods 126 DED patients were randomly allocated into the moxibustion group (treated by moxibustion with walnut shell spectacles, 64 cases) and the artificial tears group (treated with sodium hyaluronate eye drops, 62 cases). Evaluate the changes in the ocular surface disease index (OSDI), the visual analogue scale (VAS) of ocular discomfort, the tear film break-up time (TBUT), corneal fluorescein staining (CFS), and the Schirmer I test during the trial at baseline and after 1-week, 2-week, 3-week, and 4-week treatment. Evaluate the OSDI scale and the ocular symptom VAS scale one month after the end of treatment. Results There were no significant differences in baseline characteristics between the two groups. For OSDI scores, the results showed that the efficacy of the moxibustion group was no less than that of the artificial tear group. For VAS of ocular discomfort, both groups significantly reduced their score compared with baseline, and for the moxibustion group, the decrease was more significant. For TBUT, FAS, and PPS, results showed that the efficacy of the moxibustion group was significant in both eyes after 4 weeks of treatment, but the right eye was in the artificial tear group. For CFS and Schirmer I test scores, there was no significant effect for both groups. Conclusion Moxibustion with walnut shell spectacles could improve the clinical symptoms and tear film stability of DED patients; however, it has no significant efficacy on improving corneal injury and tear secretion, just the same as sodium hyaluronate eye drops. Nevertheless, moxibustion with walnut shell spectacles may have better effects on the self-assessment of ocular discomfort than sodium hyaluronate eye drops.

Abstract
Oxidative stress represents one of the main factors driving the pathophysiology of multiple ophthalmic conditions including presbyopia, cataracts, dry eye disease (DED), glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy (DR). Currently, different studies have demonstrated the role of orally administered nutraceuticals in these diseases. For instance, they have demonstrated to improve lens accommodation in presbyopia, reduce protein aggregation in cataracts, ameliorate tear film stability, break up time, and tear production in dry eye, and participate in the avoidance of retinal neuronal damage and a decrease in intraocular pressure in glaucoma, contribute to the delayed progression of AMD, or in the prevention or treatment of neuronal death in diabetic retinopathy. In this review, we summarized the nutraceuticals which have presented a positive impact in ocular disorders, emphasizing the clinical assays. The characteristics of the different types of nutraceuticals are specified along with the nutraceutical concentration used to achieve a therapeutic outcome in ocular diseases.

Abstract
PURPOSE To review the indications and efficacy of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) application in the treatment of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). Its main purpose is to describe its physiology, efficacy, indications, and adverse effects. PATIENTS AND METHODS A two database (PubMed, EMBASE) search was performed from July 2017 to July 2022 using the MeSH terms ("Intense Pulsed Light" AND ("Meibomian Gland Dysfunction" OR "Dry Eye"). We included randomized studies and systematic reviews with meta-analysis. Exclusion criteria were non-randomized trials, studies enrolling non-MGD dry eye disease, and other works older than 5 years. RESULTS Current literature shows that IPL is an effective and safe treatment modality for severe dry eye. Available evidence shows improvement of symptoms and objective indicators, such as noninvasive breakup time, thickness of lipid layer, and Schirmer test. However, our review concluded that the beneficial effects of IPL may lose some efficacy at 6-months after the initial session, and subsequent sessions may be required. Thus, IPL treatment should not be considered as first-line therapy for MGD but instead as an adjuvant option to the standard of care. The optimal treatment modality remains unknown and should be tailored according to each patient's phenotype, clinician's experience, and available technology. There is evidence that IPL treatment may down-regulate pro-inflammatory markers (such as interleukin (IL) 6, IL17a, IL-1) and Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). CONCLUSION MGD is a multifactorial disease and IPL treatment seems a promising treatment modality. Despite this, more evidence is needed to study its benefits - since this is an emerging technology, it is expected an increase in comparative studies in the following years, with longer follow-up periods, which may enable more precise conclusions about this treatment modality.

Abstract
Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactorial eye disease with few effective methods for clinical diagnosis and treatment. It is the most common eye disease with significant health challenges of the unprecedented aging population. Recent proteomic studies and clinical research have led to the discovery of several biologically relevant biomarkers, with increased levels of Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and decreased levels of lactoferrin being clinically validated in the progression of DED. In this study, a sensitive point of care (POC) DED diagnostic method was developed for targeting dual biomarkers of IL-6 and lactoferrin in the tear samples. A paper-based lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) was established in a double-antibody sandwich fashion with colloid gold nanoparticles acting as probes. The minimal detection concentrations were 0.1 ng/ml and 10 ng/ml for IL-6 and lactoferrin, respectively. Separated conventional ELISA tests were also performed with data confirming results from the LFIA tests. A trial study was conducted with 20 tear samples from DED patients and healthy controls. All DED tear samples exhibited significantly higher levels of IL-6 and decreased levels of lactoferrin, as compared to the normal controls. A quantitative analysis of LFIA images was carried out using ImageJ software for an accurate data interpretation. This dual biomarker detection method is sensitive and affordable with quick turnaround time. Design of a larger clinical study in the future can further validate this POC assay for early diagnosis as well as patients’ self-management of chronic states of DED. A point of care assay was established for in-home diagnosis of dry eye disease (DED). Two validated biomarkers were targeted to address the multifactorial nature of DED. The paper based lateral flow assays were validated by the conventional ELISA assays. Initial clinical trial tests were performed with 20 tear samples.

Abstract
The aim of this review is to give an updated perspective about the methods for chemical modifications of hyaluronic acid (HA) toward the development of new applications in medical devices and material engineering. After a brief introduction on chemical, structural and biological features of this important natural polysaccharide, the most important methods for chemical and physical modifications are disclosed, discussing both on the formation of new covalent bonds and the interaction with other natural polysaccharides. These strategies are of paramount importance in the production of new medical devices and materials with improved properties. In particular, the use of HA in the development of new materials by means of additive manufacturing techniques as electro fluid dynamics, i.e., electrospinning for micro to nanofibres, and three-dimensional bioprinting is also discussed.

Abstract
The invasion of microbial pathogens and/or sterile inflammation caused by physical/chemical injuries, increased ocular pressure, oxidative stress, and ischemia could lead to the generation of detrimental immune responses in the eyes, which result in excessive tissue injury and vision loss. The bioavailability of eye drops that are enriched with immunoregulatory and trophic factors which may concurrently suppress intraocular inflammation and promote tissue repair and regeneration is generally low. We recently developed “derived- Multiple Allogeneic Proteins Paracrine Signaling regenerative biologics platform technology d-MAPPS™”, a bioengineered biological product which is enriched with immunomodulatory and trophic factors that can efficiently suppress detrimental immune responses in the eye and promote the repair and regeneration of injured corneal and retinal tissues. The results obtained in preclinical and clinical studies showed that d-MAPPS™ increased the viability of injured corneal cells, inhibited the production of inflammatory cytokines in immune cells, alleviated inflammation, and restored vision loss in patients suffering from meibomian gland dysfunction and dry eye disease. Herewith, we emphasized molecular mechanisms responsible for the therapeutic efficacy of d-MAPPS™ and we presented the main beneficial effects of d-MAPPS™ in clinical settings, indicating that the topical administration of d-MAPPS™ could be considered a new therapeutic approach for the treatment of ocular inflammatory diseases and for the repair and regeneration of injured corneal and retinal tissues.

Abstract
Objective In this study, we aimed to determine the prevalence of dry eye disease (DED) and its related factors among adult patients in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Methodology We conducted a cross-sectional study based on a pre-designed, validated questionnaire (the McMonnies questionnaire) at primary healthcare centers in Riyadh in January-May 2019. Participants were classified into two groups: those with and without a diagnosis of DED. Factors related to the diagnosis were derived using univariate analysis. A backward stepwise logistic regression model was used to further explore predictors of DED and included all variables that were significant in the univariate analysis. Results A total of 276 patients participated in this study. About half (53.3%) were males, and 47.8% were aged 25-45 years. While more than two-thirds of the participants (70.3%) had some symptoms indicative of DED, only 42% were diagnosed with DED. A higher prevalence of DED was found in females. About half (47.5%) had been prescribed eye drops or other treatments for dry eyes. Univariate analysis showed a significant correlation between the incidence of DED and living in southern Riyadh (p=0.017). Additionally, all age groups were significantly associated with DED, and a higher prevalence was reported in those older than 45 years. Backward stepwise logistic regression revealed that using dry eye drops was among the most significant predictors of DED [odds ratio (OR): 339, 95% confidence interval (CI): 73.2-1577.3, p<0.001]. Conclusion Based on our findings, DED was more common among women and with advancing age. DED was associated with the presence of dry eye symptoms, arthritis, usage of dry eye drops, and living in southern Riyadh. There is a need to design and implement health awareness programs to prevent such medical issues among the population.

Abstract
This article discusses common ocular manifestations of cystic fibrosis (CF) and cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator-related disorders (CFTR-RD). A structured approach for assessing and treating patients with CF/CFTR-RD seeking corneal refractive surgery is proposed, as well as a novel surgical risk scoring system. We also report two patients with various manifestations of CFTR dysfunction who presented for refractive surgery and the outcomes of the procedures. Surgeons seeking to perform refractive surgery on patients with CF/CFTR-RD should be aware of mild to severe clinical manifestations of CFTR dysfunction. Specific systemic and ocular manifestations of CF include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchiectasis, recurrent pulmonary infections, CF-related diabetes and liver disease, pancreatic insufficiency, conjunctival xerosis, night blindness, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), and blepharitis. Corneal manifestations include dry eye disease (DED), punctate keratitis (PK), filamentary keratitis (FK), xerophthalmia, and decreased endothelial cell density and central corneal thickness. Utilization of the appropriate review of systems (ROS) and screening tests will assist in determining if the patient is a suitable candidate for refractive surgery, as CF/CFTR-RD can impact the health of the cornea. Collaboration with other medical professionals who care for these patients is encouraged to ensure that their CF/CFTR-RD symptoms are best controlled via systemic and other treatment options. This will assist in reducing the severity of their ocular manifestations before and after surgery.

Abstract
Dry eye is a common inflammatory condition of the ocular surface. While oral omega-3 supplementation for its treatment has been extensively studied, recent large-scale studies have cast doubt on their efficacy. However, efficacy of topical omega-3 has yet to be reviewed. We performed a systematic search of PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases for all studies evaluating topical omega-3 in dry eye. Five human and five animal studies were included. Of the five human studies, two were on dry eye disease (DED), one was on contact lens discomfort, and two were on patients undergoing corneal collagen crosslinking. In humans, there is promising evidence for improved ocular surface staining and tear break-up time compared to controls, equivocal evidence for improvements to ocular surface symptoms and meibomian gland dysfunction, and no effect on increasing tear production. Data from animal models largely agree with these findings, and further reveal decreased inflammatory cytokines and monocyte infiltration. Our review suggests that topical omega-3 is a promising treatment for dry eye, but also points to the paucity of evidence in this field. Further trials in humans are required to characterize effects of topical omega-3 and optimize its dosage.

Abstract
The search for proteomic biomarkers in ocular disease is one of the most important research directions in recent years. Reliable biomarkers can be an immense adjuvant for both diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. There is no more readily available ocular tissue for proteomic analysis than tear film, which makes an interesting target for the biomarker search. Tear film is a complex fluid consisting of a superficial lipid layer, which covers the aqueous-mucous layer. Its complexity makes it a perfect candidate for all the "omics" approaches. Glaucoma, cataract, age-related macular degeneration, and other diseases are commonly thought to have a multifactorial background. Currently, no reliable non-invasive tests are available that would help physicians with screening and further patient management. The aim of the study is to present modern methods of measuring biomarkers in tears, with particular emphasis on spectrometric methods, and to discuss their diagnostic and therapeutic usefulness.

Abstract
Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactorial syndrome that commonly occurs with depression. However, therapies targeting depression-related dry eye disease are rare. In the current study, we studied the beneficial effect of a natural flavone, acacetin, in depression-associated dry eye disease by utilizing the chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) depression model. Our data showed that acacetin improved the depressive behaviors in sucrose preference test (SPT), tail suspension test (TST) and forced swim test (FST); relieved the dry eye symptoms including corneal epithelial impairments, tear production decrease and goblet cell loss in CUMS mice. Acacetin also inhibited NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome expression levels and suppressed inflammatory responses via enhancing glycoprotein 78 (gp78)/Insulin induced gene-1 (Insig-1)-controlled NLRP3 ubiquitination in CUMS mice. Furthermore, knockdown of gp78 compromised acacetin-conferred protective efficacy in depression-related dry eye disease. In summary, our findings indicated that acacetin exerts beneficial effect in depression-associated dry eye disease, which is tightly related to gp78-mediated NLRP3 ubiquitination.

Abstract
PURPOSE To develop an in vitro model of severe immunocompetent-dry eye disease (ic-DED) and to investigate the mechanism of action of a T-lysial ocular surface modulator. MATERIALS AND METHODS The reconstructed human corneal epithelium (HCE) was exposed to dryness stimuli. THP-1 cell infiltration into HCE was monitored at 4 h and 24 h from T-lysial application by immunohistochemistry (CD14, CD86, AQP3) and molecular biology (AQP3, TLR4 and TNF-α). RESULTS A reduction of CD14, CD86 and AQP3 was observed after T-lysial treatment at 24 h. TLR4 was overexpressed in ic-DED model and downregulated by T-Lysial after 24 h. TNF-α expression was not modified. CONCLUSION The ic-DED model can be used to monitor the migration and differentiation of THP-1 into HCE. T-lysial was found to exert anti-inflammatory activity. This experimental model is a promising tool to study the crosstalk between epithelial and immune cells, providing new insights on the mechanisms of DED onset.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate ocular surface changes associated with face mask (FMs) use of healthcare personnel during the COVID-19 pandemic. We prospectively evaluated 200 eyes of 100 individuals during working hours and 40 eyes of 20 individuals during their rest days as a control group. Dry eye symptoms were assessed with the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) and McMonnies questionnaire. The clinical investigation included the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), corneal fluorescein staining (FS), break-up time (BUT), and Schirmer test I before and after a 7-h work shift with a continuative use of surgical or N95 masks. The control group was evaluated similarly twice a day, at 8:00 a.m. and at 3:00 p.m.. In the study group, BCVA, FS, BUT, and Schirmer test were investigated and there was a significant negative variation at the end of the shift. On the contrary, the control group did not show significant variations of any clinical feature. Furthermore, no significant changes in clinical parameters were observed during the use of surgical or N95 masks. In conclusion, FMs continuative use resulted in daily ocular surface modifications specifically in healthcare personnel.

Abstract
Background: Cord blood platelet lysate (CB-PL) and cord blood platelet poor plasma (CB-PPP) have been applied with success in wound healing applications. Pathologies such as Sjogrens’s Syndrome (SS) and chronic graft versus host disease (cGVHD) can lead to severe ophthalmology issues. The application of CB-PL and CB-PPP may be strongly considered for damaged cornea healing. This study aimed to the evaluation of the beneficial properties of CB-PL and CB-PPP in corneal wound healing applications. Methods: Initially, the CB-PL and CB-PPP were produced from donated cord blood units (CBUs), followed by biochemical analysis. Corneal epithelial cells (CECs) were isolated from wistar rats and then cultured with medium containing 20% v/v either of CB-PL or CB-PPP. To define the impact of CB-PL and CB-PPP, biochemical, morphological analysis, scratch-wound assays, and immunoassays in CECs were performed. Results: CB-PL and CB-PPP were characterized by good biochemical parameters, regarding their quality characteristics and biomolecule content. CECs’ morphological features did not change after their cultivation with CB-PL or CB-PPP. A scratch wound assay and molecular analysis of CECs expanded with CB-PL indicated higher migratory capacity compared to those cultured with CB-PPP. Conclusion: CB-PL and CB-PPP exhibited good properties with respect to cell migration and proliferation, and could be considered an alternative source for eye drop production, to possibly be used in cornea wound healing applications.

Hyaluronic acid (HA)
is a naturally occurring polysaccharide
with
many molecular functions, including maintaining the structure and
physiology of the tissues, tissue remodeling, and inflammation. HA
is found naturally in physiological tear fluid, possesses excellent
mucus-layer-adhesive properties, and is successfully employed in the
treatment of dry eye syndrome (DES). However, HA has as major drawback:
its rapid in vivo degradation by hyaluronidase. We
report on a unique material, namely, HA-3, obtained by

Abstract
Background According to computer vision syndrome (CVS). Due to constant use of computers by the students, it has become one of the growing health risks associated with technology (cell phones and tablets). CVS is a combination of eye and vision disorders associated with activities that affect near vision and is experienced in relation to or during the use of computers. The main aim of the study was to find the risk factors of CVS, its symptoms, and other factors associated with CVS. Materials and Methods In this cross-sectional study, data was collected using a purposely constructed E-questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of demographic items and items related to the usage of E-devices and the symptoms of eye problems. After data collection, data was coded and entered in the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) ver. 20 software for analyses. Descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation, frequencies and percentages) were computed. To measure the significant differences, Chi-square test was used at 5% level of significance. Results The mean (SD) age of 400 respondents was 22.5 (11.5) years. We computed the internal consistency, and the overall Cronbach alpha was 0.81. Also, 40% of the respondents were females, while 60% were males. Results showed that 20% of the respondents had multiple symptoms of eye problems, while 9% had no symptoms, 9% had eye pain, 8% had dryness of eye, and 6% had watering of eyes and redness of eye symptoms. The rest of the symptoms was found in less than 5% of the respondents. Conclusion This worldwide issue requires immediate attention. Long-term computer use has been linked to significant visual impairments, particularly in people who use computers and similar gadgets for extended periods of time.

Abstract
Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactorial disorder that leads to ocular discomfort, visual disturbance, and tear film instability. DED is accompanied by an increase in tear osmolarity and ocular surface inflammation. The diagnosis and treatment of DED still present significant challenges. Therefore, novel biomarkers and treatments are of great interest. Proteases are present in different tissues on the ocular surface. In a healthy eye, proteases are highly regulated. However, dysregulation occurs in various pathologies, including DED. With this review, we provide an overview of the implications of different families of proteases in the development and severity of DED, along with studies involving protease inhibitors as potential therapeutic tools. Even though further research is needed, this review aims to give suggestions for identifying novel biomarkers and developing new protease inhibitors.

Abstract
Dry eye is considered an inflammatory disease. Gut microbiota are important in the regulation of low-grade chronic inflammation, including in the eye. Probiotics and prebiotics are increasingly used to regulate chronic-disease-associated gut dysbiosis. Therefore, this double-masked, randomized controlled clinical trial aimed to explore the potential of oral probiotics and prebiotics in the management of dry eye disease. In total, 41 participants with dry eye received probiotic and prebiotic supplements (treatment group, n = 23) or respective placebos (control group, n = 18) for 4 months. Dry eye symptoms and signs were evaluated using the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), Dry Eye Questionnaire 5, osmolarity, non-invasive keratograph break-up time (NIKBUT), ocular surface staining, tear meniscus height (TMH), lipid layer thickness, and conjunctival redness. After 4 months, the average OSDI score of the treatment group was significantly better compared to that of the controls (16.8 ± 5.9 vs. 23.4 ± 7.4; p < 0.001). The NIKBUT and TMH did not change significantly with treatment (p = 0.31 and p = 0.84) but reduced significantly for controls on average by −5.5 ± 1.0 secs (p = 0.03) and 0.2 ± 0.1 mm (p = 0.02). These data suggest that probiotics and prebiotics might be effective in the management of dry eye disease.

Abstract
This study evaluated tear film and ocular surface parameters in patients after cataract surgery. Methods: a prospective clinical study included 48 eyes of 48 patients who underwent uncomplicated phacoemulsification performed by one surgeon. Tear break-up time (TBUT), Schirmer’s I test, Cochet–Bonnet esthesiometry and in vivo laser scanning confocal microscopy was carried out and the OSDI questionnaire was filled out. All tests were assessed before and 1 month after the surgery. Results: there were 32 (66.7%) women; 16 (33.3%) men, mean age was 74.08 ± 5.37. Mean TBUT at baseline was 8.6 ± 1.9 s, after the surgery, it was 7.7 ± 2.7 s, p = 0.004. Schirmer’s I test was 8.7 ± 3.9 mm versus 8.1 ± 3.7 mm, p = 0.002. Mean corneal nerve density at baseline was 15.70 ± 2.34 and at the first postoperative month 14.94 ± 1.48 mm/mm2, p = 0.02. The OSDI questionnaire score increased from 12.15 ± 10.34 before the surgery to 13.79 ± 10.88 in the first postoperative month, p = 0.001. Conclusions: the ocular surface was affected 1 month after the cataract surgery: TBUT was shorter, Schirmer’s I test and corneal nerve density were decreased while the OSDI score increased.

Abstract
Purpose To compare TearCare and Lipiflow systems in the ability to reduce the symptoms of dry eye disease (DED) associated with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Methods In this multicenter, masked, randomized-controlled trial, 235 subjects received a single TearCare treatment (n = 115) or a single LipiFlow treatment (n = 120) and were followed for 1-month post-treatment. DED symptoms were assessed using the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), Symptom Assessment in Dry Eye (SANDE), and Eye Dryness (ED) questionnaires at baseline and at 1 month. Post-hoc subgroup analysis was conducted on subjects with less severe and more severe gland obstruction determined by baseline meibomian gland secretion score (MGSS). Results TearCare system significantly improved total OSDI, SANDE, and ED scores from baseline (p < 0.0001) at 1-month follow-up. Subjects with more severe disease (MGSS <7) achieved statistically greater reduction with TearCare compared to LipiFlow in total OSDI score (30.4 ± 2.53 and 21.9 ± 2.37, respectively, pANCOVA = 0.0160), OSDI Section B score for quality of vision (5.1 ± 0.48 and 3.6 ± 0.45, respectively, pANCOVA= 0.0206), and SANDE frequency score (51.9 ± 3.70 and 41.5 ± 3.45, respectively, pANCOVA = 0.0455). Conclusion TearCare provides significant DED symptom relief at 1 month after a single treatment. Outcomes were consistent in OSDI, SANDE, and ED assessments. In subjects with more severe gland dysfunction, TearCare performed significantly better than LipiFlow in improving quality of vision and overall DED symptom frequency determined by OSDI and SANDE. Abstract
BACKGROUND The global incidence of dry eye disease (DED) is very high. DED seriously affects the quality of life of patients; however, the current curative effect of medicine for moderate to severe DED is poor. This randomized clinical trial was planned to investigate the effect of acupuncture compared with artificial tears (AT) on moderate to severe DED. METHODS A randomized clinical trial was performed at 2 hospitals in China. 120 DED patients were randomly equally divided into an acupuncture and an artificial tear group. Either acupuncture or artificial tears was performed for an 8-week period, and a 24-week follow-up was performed. The primary outcome measure was the Schirmer-I test (SIT) change from baseline. The secondary outcome measures included the numerical rating scale (NRS) change from baseline for improvement in ocular symptoms, the ocular surface disease index (OSDI), the tear-film break-up time (TBUT), corneal fluorescein staining (CFS), and acupuncture acceptability. Adverse events also were monitored and documented. RESULTS For the primary outcome, the mean changes from baseline in the SIT values were significantly different between the acupuncture (5.75 [2.53-9.75]) and AT (0.52 [- 1.18-2.46]) groups at week 8 with a between difference of 5.23 (P < 0.05). Between-group differences of 8.49 in OSDI score change from baseline differed significantly at week 8 (P < 0.05). However, between-group differences of the changes in the average symptom NRS score, TBUT, and CFS did not differ significantly at week 8. Five cases experienced acupuncture-related adverse events. CONCLUSIONS This randomized clinical trial found that acupuncture at BL1 significantly promoted tear secretion. Acupuncture showed greater benefits than AT for moderate to severe DED. Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the association between dry eye and inner ear diseases in a Korean population. Methods: Data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey (KNHANES V, 2010−2012), a national cross-sectional health examination and survey, were collected by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The association between dry eye and inner ear disease was determined using the chi-square test and logistic regression analysis. The individuals were divided into two age groups (<60 and ≥60 years). Results: In total, 17,542 individuals (n = 11,932 in the <60 years group and n = 5610 in the ≥60 years group) were enrolled. After adjusting for confounding factors, the logistic regression model revealed that the associated factors were dizziness and loss of balance experience (OR, 1.315; 95% CI, 1.143−1.513), self-awareness of abnormal voice (OR, 1.372; 95% CI, 1.120−1.679), subjective hearing discomfort (OR, 1.278; CI, 1.084−1.506), and tinnitus (OR, 1.265; 95% CI, 1.101−1.453). The inversely associated factor for dry eye was bilateral hearing loss (OR, 0.497; 95% CI, 0.367−0.672). The hearing threshold was lower in the dry eye group than in the non-dry eye group (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Tinnitus was associated with dry eye and bilateral hearing loss was inversely associated with dry eye. These results suggest that hypersensitivity of the senses and nerves, which is neuropathic hyperesthesia, is one of the main mechanisms of dry eye. Treatment of neuropathy may help in treating dry eye associated with dizziness or tinnitus.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the short- (within 90 minutes) and long-term (after 21 days of treatment) effects of an artificial tear containing carbomer, hyaluronic acid, glycerol, and medium-chain triglycerides in patients with mild-to-moderate dry eye symptoms. PATIENTS AND METHODS Subjects received the tested artificial tears in the right eye and control artificial tears in the left eye and were assessed 10, 30, 60, and 90 minutes after instillation in the short-term study phase. They received the study product in both eyes in the long-term phase. Non-invasive break-up time (NIBUT), tear lipid layer pattern, tear evaporation, and tear film objective optical dynamics (TFOOD) were measured in controlled environmental conditions. RESULTS In total, 32 patients (10 males, mean age 42 ± 11 years) were enrolled. During the short-term phase, NIBUT increased significantly in the right eyes at all time points compared with baseline (all p < 0.05). Conversely, in the left eyes, NIBUT increased significantly at 10 and 30 min (p < 0.05). The tear evaporation values increased at 10 minutes and decreased at 30 and 60 minutes (p < 0.05) in the right eyes, while they increased only at 10 minutes (p < 0.05) in the left eyes. Compared with baseline, the TFOOD was significantly more stable at all time points in the right eyes (p < 0.05), while it was more stable at 10 and 30 min in the left eyes (p < 0.05). In the long-term phase, treated eyes showed a significant increase in NIBUT values, a significant reduction of tear evaporation, a significant improvement of tear lipid layer pattern, and a more stable TFOOD compared with baseline (all p < 0.05). Symptoms, measured with the Ocular Surface Disease Index questionnaire, were also significantly reduced compared with baseline (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION The tested product increased tear film stability and reduced tear evaporation, normalizing lipid layer pattern and reducing symptoms in the short- and long-term observation.

Abstract
The eye is one of the most complex organs in the human body, containing rich and critical physiological information (e.g., intraocular pressure, corneal temperature, and pH) as well as a library of metabolite biomarkers (e.g., glucose, proteins, and specific ions). Smart contact lenses (SCLs) can serve as a wearable intelligent ocular prosthetic device capable of noninvasive and continuous monitoring of various essential physical/biochemical parameters and drug loading/delivery for the treatment of ocular diseases. Advances in SCL technologies and the growing public interest in personalized health are accelerating SCL research more than ever before. Here, the current status and potential of SCL development through a comprehensive review from fabrication to applications to commercialization are discussed. First, the material, fabrication, and platform designs of the SCLs for the diagnostic and therapeutic applications are discussed. Then, the latest advances in diagnostic and therapeutic SCLs for clinical translation are reviewed. Later, the established techniques for wearable power transfer and wireless data transmission applied to current SCL devices are summarized. An outlook, future opportunities, and challenges for developing next-generation SCL devices are also provided. With the rise in interest of SCL development, this comprehensive and essential review can serve as a new paradigm for the SCL devices.

Abstract
Matrix metalloproteinases are a family of enzymes fundamental in inflammatory processes. Between them, MMP-9 is up-regulated during inflammation; thus, its quantification in non-invasive fluids is a promising approach for inflammation identification. To this goal, a biomarker quantification test was developed for ocular inflammation detection using anti-MMP-9 antibody microarrays (AbMAs). After validation with eight healthy control tear samples characterized by ELISA, 20 samples were tested from individuals diagnosed with ocular inflammation due to: cataracts, glaucoma, meibomian gland dysfunction, allergy, or dry eye. Concentration values of tear MMP-9 were obtained for each sample, and 12 patients surpassed the pathological threshold (30 ng/mL). A significant elevation of MMP-9 concentration in the tears of glaucoma patients compared with healthy controls was observed. In order to evaluate the diagnostic ability, an ROC curve analysis was performed using our data, determining the optimal threshold for the test at 33.6 ng/mL of tear MMP-9. In addition, a confusion matrix was applied, estimating sensitivity at 60%, specificity at 88%, and accuracy at 68%. In conclusion, we demonstrated that the AbMAs system allows the quantification of MMP-9 in pathologies that involve inflammation of the ocular surface.

Prevalence and Characteristics of Dry Eye Disease After Cataract Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. Ophthalmol Ther 2022; 11:1309-1332. Abstract
Dry eye disease (DED) after cataract surgery is associated with various risk factors, while causing a wide range of heterogeneous symptoms including decreased quality of vision. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the prevalence and characteristics of DED after cataract surgery. We searched PubMed and EMBASE and included studies on patients with DED after cataract surgery, between January 2011 and June 2020. Study-specific estimates (DED prevalence rates after cataract surgery in patients without preexisting DED) were combined using one-group meta-analysis in a random-effects model. We included 36 studies published between 2013 and 2020. We included nine of these in the meta-analysis of DED prevalence after cataract surgery. Overall 37.4% (95% CI 22.6-52.3; 206/775) of patients without preexisting DED developed DED after cataract surgery. The risk factors for DED after cataract surgery included age, female sex, systemic diseases, systemic medications, psychiatric conditions, preexisting DED, meibomian gland dysfunction, preservatives in eye drops, surgery techniques, and lifestyle. DED severity peak occurred 1 day postoperatively and persisted for at least 1-12 months following cataract surgery; therefore, consistent follow-up for DED is warranted for at least 1 month after cataract surgery. Topical administration of preservative-free diquafosol tetrasodium solution and preoperative meibomian gland treatment were effective in preventing and treating DED following cataract surgery. As more than one-third of patients develop DED after cataract surgery, careful DED management and treatment is needed after cataract surgery to improve satisfaction and vision quality.

Abstract
Purpose To analyze the conjunctival sac microbial communities in patients with Sjögren's syndrome-associated dry eyes (SSDE) and non-Sjögren's syndrome-associated dry eyes (NSSDE), compared with normal controls (NC). Methods Conjunctival sac swab samples from 23 eyes of SSDE, 36 eyes of NSSDE, and 39 eyes of NC were collected. The V3–V4 region of the 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene high-throughput sequencing was performed on an Illumina MiSeq platform and analyzed using Quantitative Insights Into Microbial Ecology (QIIME). Alpha diversity was employed to analyze microbiome diversity through Chao1 and Shannon indexes. Beta diversity was demonstrated by the principal coordinates analysis (PCoA) and Partial Least Squares Discrimination Analysis (PLS-DA). The relative abundance was bioinformatically analyzed at the phylum and genus levels. Results The alpha diversity was lower in patients with dry eye disease (Shannon index: NC vs. SSDE: P = 0.020, NC vs. NSSDE: P = 0.029). The beta diversity showed divergent microbiome composition in different groups (NC vs. SSDE: P = 0.001, NC vs. NSSDE: P = 0.001, NSSDE vs. SSDE: P = 0.005). The top 5 abundant phyla were Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteriota, Bacteroidota, and Cyanobacteria in all three groups. The top five abundant genera included Acinetobacter, Staphylococcus, Bacillus, Corynebacterium, and Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1. The relative microbiome abundance was different between groups. The Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes (F/B) ratio was 6.42, 7.31, and 9.71 in the NC, NSSDE, and SSDE groups, respectively (NC vs. SSDE: P = 0.038, NC vs. NSSDE: P = 0.991, SSDE vs. NSSDE: P = 0.048). Conclusion The diversity of conjunctival sac microbiome in patients with NSSDE and SSDE was diminished compared with NC. The main microbiome at the phylum and genus level were similar between groups, but the relative abundance had variations. The Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio was higher in the SSDE group.

Abstract
Abundant ion-channels, including various perceptual receptors, chloride channels, purinergic receptor channels, and water channels that exist on the ocular surface, play an important role in the pathogenesis of dry eye. Channel-targeting activators or inhibitor compounds, which have shown positive effects in in vivo and in vitro experiments, have become the focus of the dry eye drug research and development, and individual compounds have been applied in clinical experimental treatment. This review summarized various types of ion-channels on the ocular surface related to dry eye, their basic functions, and spatial distribution, and discussed basic and clinical research results of various channel receptor regulatory compounds. Therefore, further elucidating the relationship between ion-channels and dry eye will warrant research of dry eye targeted drug therapy.

Abstract
Purpose To assess the frequency of patients reducing the use of artificial tears (ATs) among patients with dry eye disease (DED) following lifitegrast treatment. Patients and Methods Two independent analyses were performed using the data from the 1-year, randomized, multicenter, Phase 3 SONATA trial and a noninterventional, real-world evidence (RWE) study conducted in patients with DED who were treated with lifitegrast in the United States and Canada. In SONATA, patients who had used ATs in the lifitegrast and placebo groups were included. The RWE study reviewed patients’ electronic medical records, prescribing patterns, and practices of physicians throughout the survey. These data were then used to compare the proportion of patients using ATs in the 6-month pre-index period versus the 12-month post-index period. Results Of 293 patients (lifitegrast, n=195; placebo, n=98) from SONATA, 107 (lifitegrast, n=64; placebo, n=43) used ATs during the on-therapy period while 186 (lifitegrast, n=131; placebo, n=55) did not. Of those not using ATs, the proportion of patients in the lifitegrast group at any time was higher (~67% [n=131]) versus placebo (~56% [n=55]); this was the case at all study time-points (Days 90, 180, 270, and 360). The RWE study included 600 patient charts (US, n=550; Canada, n=50); 75.5% (n=453) reported AT use. There was ~40% decrease in the proportion of patients using ATs as adjunct DED therapy to lifitegrast in the post-index period (n=273) versus those in the pre-index period (n=453). Conclusion The findings show that the reliance on AT use can be gradually reduced with lifitegrast treatment, eventually leading to a reduction in disease burden.

Abstract
Background and objective Dry eye disease (DED) is one of the most prevalent ocular diseases worldwide. DED symptoms can result from disturbances to the homeostasis of the middle tear film layer (aqueous layer), including inflammation, pain, and eye discomfort, which can have a negative impact on individuals’ quality of life and daily activities. Sleep disorders are highly prevalent among patients with DED, and the incidence of sleep disturbances in DED patients has been reported to be as high as 40%. Decreased sleep quality can aggravate dry eye symptoms by increasing tear osmolarity and decreasing tear production. In this study, we aimed to investigate the association between DED and sleep quality in the adult population of Saudi Arabia. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted among adult patients aged 18 years and above in Saudi Arabia in August 2021. A validated Arabic version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to evaluate sleep quality, and the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire was employed to diagnose DED. Data collection and analysis were performed using the SPSS Statistics software (IBM, Armonk, NY). Results A total of 234 subjects were analyzed, and 59.8% of the participants were women. Our tool suggested that 71.4% of the included participants had severe DED, 15% had moderate DED, and 13.7% had mild DED. However, 40.6% of the participants reported that they had not been diagnosed with DED previously and 34.6% had no previous DED symptoms. The mean total PSQI score was 8.63 ±2.23, with the highest score recorded for component 2: sleep latency (1.73) and the lowest score recorded for component 4: habitual sleep efficiency (0.20). Poor sleep quality as assessed by PSQI showed a significant positive correlation with the severity of DED as assessed by OSDI. Conclusion The significant positive correlation between poor sleep quality and DED indicated that patients with DED had a higher risk of poor sleep quality compared to healthy patients. Patients with DED should be educated about the steps and techniques to improve their sleep patterns.

Abstract
Introduction Dry eye disease (DED) is a common ocular pathology with significant impacts on both quality of life and visual function. One platform where individuals are receiving healthcare information is TikTok, the world's fastest-growing social media platform. Though used by more than one billion users, current literature is not established to assess the quality of information on TikTok. The purpose of this study was to assess the quality of DED-related medical information present on TikTok. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of DED content on TikTok, utilizing the search term #DryEye to assess the top 150 videos appearing on December 20, 2021. Included videos were analyzed for descriptive statistics, including views, likes, uploader profession, and the number of uploader followers. Videos were assessed utilizing DISCERN, a tool used to appraise consumer health information. The one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine statistical significance groups. Results A total of 101 videos were included in the final analysis. When comparing content creators, physicians received a significantly greater number of views and higher DISCERN scores (p<0.05) than non-physician medical providers and non-medical individuals. The content of the videos were educational content (n=39, 38.6%) or treatment information (n=37, 36.6%), followed by home remedies (n=10, 9.9%) and personal anecdotes (n=8, 7.9%). Videos with rich supplementary visuals (multiple images/moving images) had higher DISCERN scores compared to videos with no supplementary visuals or one supplementary visual (p<0.01). Conclusion With the growing popularity of TikTok, it is important to provide high-quality information to ensure the dissemination of medically accurate information and reduce the prevalence of disinformation. Our results demonstrate that while TikTok is a powerful platform, the quality of videos can still be vastly improved. Content creators, regardless of profession, can improve their DISCERN through listing sources, comparing treatments, and discussing risks/outcomes of various treatment modalities.

Abstract
Background To determine the effect of sodium hyaluronate combined with recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF) on clinical symptoms and inflammation in patients with newly diagnosed xerophthalmia after cataract surgery. Methods A total of 106 patients who underwent cataract surgery and were newly diagnosed with xerophthalmia in our hospital between June 2018 and August 2019 were enrolled. Of these, 50 patients who were treated with sodium hyaluronate (0.1%) were assigned to the monotherapy group (MG) and the remaining 56 patients who were treated with sodium hyaluronate (0.1%) combined with rhEGF (20 μg/ml) were assigned to the combination group (CG). The 2 groups were compared based on ocular surface disease index (OSDI) score, break-up time (BUT), fluorescein corneal staining level, Schirmer I test (SI) level, clinical efficacy (disappearance of typical symptoms, including eyes drying, burning sensation, foreign body sensation, etc), and interleukin (IL)-1, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels. Spearman correlation analysis was conducted to analyze the relationship between IL-1, IL-6, TNF-α and clinical efficacy. In addition, receiver operating characteristic curves were drawn to analyze the predictive value of IL-1, IL-6, and TNF-α in efficacy on xerophthalmia. Results: After treatment, the CG showed reduced OSDI score compared with the MG. The CG showed increased BUT (s) and SI (mm) levels compared with MG. After treatment, the CG exhibited decreased levels of IL-1(ng/mL), IL-6 (ng/mL), and TNF-α (ng/mL) compared with the MG. Spearman correlation analysis revealed that IL-1, IL-6, and TNF-α were negatively correlated with clinical efficacy. The areas under the curves of IL-1, IL-6, and TNF-α were 0.801, 0.800, and 0.736 respectively. Conclusions Sodium hyaluronate combined with rhEGF is helpful to alleviate clinical symptoms and inflammation in patients with xerophthalmia undergoing cataract surgery.

Abstract
Objective: The local characteristics of spontaneous brain activity in patients with dry eye (DE) and its relationship with clinical characteristics were evaluated using the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) method. Methods: A total of 27 patients with DE (10 males and 17 females) and 28 healthy controls (HCs) (10 males and 18 females) were recruited, matched according to sex, age, weight and height, classified into the DE and HC groups, and examined using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans. Spontaneous brain activity changes were recorded using ALFF technology. Data were recorded and plotted on the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, reflecting changes in activity in different brain areas. Finally, Pearson correlation analysis was used to calculate the potential relationship between spontaneous brain activity abnormalities in multiple brain regions and clinical features in patients with DE. GraphPad Prism 8 (GraphPad Software, Inc.) was used to analyze the linear correlation between the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and ALFF value. Results: Compared with HCs, the ALFF values of patients with DE were decreased in the right middle frontal gyrus (MFG)/right inferior orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), left triangle inferior frontal gyrus, left MFG, and right superior frontal gyrus. In contrast, the ALFF value of patients with DE was increased in the left calcarine. Conclusion: There are significant fluctuations in the ALFF value of specific brain regions in patients with DE versus HCs. This corroborates previous evidence showing that the symptoms of ocular surface damage in patients with DE are related to dysfunction in specific brain areas.

Abstract
Background: The main objective of this study was to use citation networks to analyze the relationship between different publications on the impact of cytokines at an ocular level and their authors. Furthermore, the different research areas will be identified, and the most cited publications determined. Methods: A search was performed in the Web of Science (WoS) database using the following keywords: “cytokine”, “inflammatory”, and “eye disease” for the period from 1990 to October 2021. The Citation Network Explorer and the CiteSpace software were then used to analyze the different publications. Results: 3127 publications with 8955 citations generated on the web were found. The largest number of publications on this topic emerged in 2018 and the authors with the largest number of publications addressing this area of research were Peizeng Yang (1.4%), Aize Kijlstra (1.3%), and Stephen C. Pflugfelder (1.2%). Conclusions: the citation network has provided a comprehensive and objective analysis of the main studies on the influence of cytokines in ocular inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
Dry eye is currently one of the most common ocular surface disease. It can lead to ocular discomfort and even cause visual impairment, which greatly affects the work and quality of life of patients. With the increasing incidence of dry eye disease (DED) in recent years, the disease is receiving more and more attention, and has become one of the hot research fields in ophthalmology research. Recently, with the in-depth research on the etiology, pathogenesis and treatment of DED, it has been shown that defects in immune regulation is one of the main pathological mechanisms of DED. Since the non-specific and specific immune response of the ocular surface are jointly regulated, a variety of immune cells and inflammatory factors are involved in the development of DED. The conventional treatment of DED is the application of artificial tears for lubricating the ocular surface. However, for moderate-to-severe DED, treatment with anti-inflammatory drugs is necessary. In this review, the immunomodulatory mechanisms of DED and the latest research progress of its related treatments including Chinese medicine will be discussed.

Abstract
To assess the impact of COVID-19 lockdown measures on dry-eye symptoms in a community-based population, a cross-sectional study was conducted during the first wave of the COVID-19 outbreak in Thailand. An online survey was distributed via social media between June and July 2020. The questionnaire elicited information on demographics, dry-eye symptoms, use of visual display terminals, and mental health status. There were 535 respondents. Thirty-seven percent reported having been diagnosed with dry-eye disease (DED). During the lockdown, the mean dry-eye symptom score (DESS) of overall participants dropped significantly from 81.6 ± 15.9 to 79.8 ± 17.4 (P < 0.001). The mean, daily, visual display terminal (VDT) usage increased from 10.55 ± 5.16 to 13.08 ± 5.65 h (P < 0.001). A negative correlation between age and VDT usage was observed in both the normal and lockdown situations. One-quarter of all participants had an abnormal mental health status. The female gender (OR 1.86; 95% CI 1.14–3.04) and increased VDT usage during the lockdown (OR 5.68; 95% CI 3.49–9.23) were independently associated with worsening dry-eye symptoms. The lockdown measures abruptly altered the behaviors and lifestyles of the overall population. Excessive exposure to VDTs were associated with deteriorated dry-eye symptoms, and it possibly contributed to the increased DED incidence in the surveyed population.

Abstract
Background We aimed to investigate the symptoms of the dry eye disease (DED) of hospitalized patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods This cross-sectional, observational study analysis included 91 hospitalized patients with confirmed COVID-19 in Wuhan, China. The Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) and the five-item Dry Eye Questionnaire (DEQ-5) were used to assess the severity of DED symptoms in the patients, and the analysis of variance was used to determine the factors associated with DED. Results A total of 42 patients consented to complete the investigation (response rate 46.15%). There were 26 (61.90%) patients who were diagnosed with DED symptoms by OSDI, and there were 28 (66.67%) patients with DED symptoms who were diagnosed by DEQ-5 score. For the biochemical tests, the patients with DED symptoms had lower aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels compared to those with no DED symptoms (20.86 vs. 42.14, p=0.04). Further analysis showed that a previous history of cardiac or stroke disease (p=0.02) and typical symptoms of muscle soreness (p=0.03) were significantly different among the four DED symptoms groups on the basis of OSDI scores. The contributing factors of OSDI were mainly focused on visual function and environmental triggers. Conclusion The incidence of DED symptoms is higher in hospitalized patients with COVID-19. The serum AST levels, history of cardiac or stroke disease, and the typical symptoms of muscle soreness may be the main impact factors on DED symptoms. We also need to pay more attention to the visual function and environmental triggers of hospitalized patients with COVID-19.

Abstract
Protons reaching the eyeball from exogenous acidic substances or released from damaged cells during inflammation, immune cells, after tissue injury or during chronic ophthalmic conditions, activate or modulate ion channels present in sensory nerve fibers that innervate the ocular anterior surface. Their identification as well as their role during disease is critical for the understanding of sensory ocular pathophysiology. They are likely to mediate some of the discomfort sensations accompanying several ophthalmic formulations and may represent novel targets for the development of new therapeutics for ocular pathologies. Among the ion channels expressed in trigeminal nociceptors innervating the anterior surface of the eye (cornea and conjunctiva) and annex ocular structures (eyelids), members of the TRP and ASIC families play a critical role in ocular acidic pain. Low pH (pH 6) activates TRPV1, a polymodal ion channel also activated by heat, capsaicin and hyperosmolar conditions. ASIC1, ASIC3 and heteromeric ASIC1/ASIC3 channels present in ocular nerve terminals are activated at pH 7.2–6.5, inducing pain by moderate acidifications of the ocular surface. These channels, together with TRPA1, are involved in acute ocular pain, as well as in painful sensations during allergic keratoconjunctivitis or other ophthalmic conditions, as blocking or reducing channel expression ameliorates ocular pain. TRPV1, TRPA1 and other ion channels are also present in corneal and conjunctival cells, promoting inflammation of the ocular surface after injury. In addition to the above-mentioned ion channels, members of the K2P and P2X ion channel families are also expressed in trigeminal neurons, however, their role in ocular pain remains unclear to date. In this report, these and other ion channels and receptors involved in acid sensing during ocular pathologies and pain are reviewed.

Abstract
Dry eye disease (DED) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the lacrimal system and ocular surface. Considering the important role of inflammation in DED development, the main treatment strategy has shifted from hydration and lubrication of dry ocular surface to the immunomodulation and immunoregulationapproach that should address the main pathologic processes responsible for disease progression. Due to their capacity for production of immunosuppressive factors, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and their secretome have been considered as potentially new agents in DED therapy. We recently developed an immunomodulatory ophthalmic solution “derived- Multiple Allogeneic Proteins Paracrine Signaling (d-MAPPS)” which activity is relied on immunosuppressive capacity of MSC-derived secretome. d-MAPPS contains MSC-derived exosomes, growth factors and immunosuppressive cytokines that are able to efficiently suppress generation of inflammatory phenotype in T cells and macrophages. Herewith, we demonstrated that d-MAPPS protected human corneal epithelial cells from chemical injury and efficiently alleviated ocular discomfort and pain in 131 DED patients during the 12-month follow-up, indicating d-MAPPS eye drops as potentially new remedy for the treatment of DED patients.

Abstract
Im März 2020, bedingt durch die Corona-Pandemie, hat sich die Berufsgruppe der Psychotherapeut_innen flexibel und spontan auf die Anforderung des Online-Settings als Behandlungsformat eingelassen. Es galt die Versorgung der Klient_innen unbedingt aufrecht zu halten und einen Anteil an der Gesamtgesundheit der Bevölkerung zu leisten. Durch digitale Kommunikation im Online-Video-Setting ergeben sich für Psychotherapeut_innen bisher wenig beachtete, zusätzliche Belastungen. Insbesondere Arbeitsplatzsicherheit (Bildschirmarbeitsverordnung), Achtsamkeit und Sorgsamkeit für Augen, Binokularsystem, Rücken, Schultern und Nacken sowie der Umgang mit einer neuen Form der Erschöpfung, der Zoom-Fatigue, sind von Bedeutung. Die Arbeitswelt 4.0 hat Einzug in die psychotherapeutischen Praxen gehalten und bringt neue Aspekte und Anforderungen an Selbstfürsorge und Psychohygiene.

Abstract
Perfluorohexyloctane (F6H8) eyedrops have been recently introduced in Europe as a product to treat dry eye disease, based on its ability to reduce tear film instability in Meibomian gland dysfunction and evaporative dry eye disease, although its mechanism of action is still unknown. In the present pilot study, we evaluated the effects of the ocular instillation of a single drop of commercial F6H8 eyedrops in 20 healthy humans (9 women/11 men), measuring: (a) Corneal surface temperature (CST) from infrared video images; (b) tear volume using phenol red threads; (c) blinking frequency; and (d) ocular surface sensations (cold, dryness, pricking, foreign body, burning, itching, gritty, eye fatigue, watering eyes, and light-evoked discomfort sensations; scored using 10 cm Visual Analog Scales), before and 5–60 min after F6H8 or saline treatment. CST decreased and tearing and blinking frequency increased significantly after F6H8 but not after saline solution. When applied unilaterally, CST decreased only in the F6H8-treated eye. No sensations were evoked after F6H8 or saline. The corneal surface temperature reduction produced by topical F6H8 does not evoke conscious ocular sensations but is sufficient to increase the activity of corneal cold thermoreceptors, leading to an increased reflex lacrimation and blinking that may relieve dry eye condition thus reducing ocular discomfort and pain.

Abstract
Background. Oleuropein is already known for its numerous pharmacological properties, but its activity in the ocular field has not yet been investigated. The study aims to verify a possible use of oleuropein (OLE)-based eye drops both in terms of efficacy in dry eye syndrome and stability in aqueous solution. Methods. OLE was co-precipitated with HP-β-cyclodextrin, and the obtained complex was encapsulated into liposomes prepared by hydration of a lipid film composed of Lipoid S100 and cholesterol with different pH buffer solutions. The hydrated vesicles were shrunk by ultrasonication or extrusion. The preparations were characterized from the physicochemical point of view by subjecting them to differential scanning calorimetry, ATR-FTIR, dynamic light scattering analysis, and microscopy. Subsequently, OLE protective activity against hyperosmotic and oxidative stress on rabbit corneal epithelial cells (RCE) was evaluated. Results. The liposomal vesicles obtained after extrusion showed a tendency towards greater encapsulation efficiency (up to 80.77%) compared to that obtained by sonication, and the liposomes hydrated in pH 5.5 solution tended to incapsulate more than the neutral ones. Ultrasonication produced two-dimensional populations of liposomes, the largest of which reached 2149 nm. On the contrary, the extruded liposomes showed homogeneous diameters of about 250 nm. Complexation with cyclodextrin and subsequent encapsulation in liposomes greatly increased the OLE stability in aqueous solution, especially at 4 °C and for the extruded formulations. OLE aqueous solution (OLE7.4-sol, reference) and neutral extruded liposomes (F7.4-e) were well tolerated on RCE cells. Moreover, OLE was able to control the effects of hyperosmolarity on ocular surface cells and to prevent oxidative stress-induced loss of cell viability.

Abstract
The use of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) devices such as continuous positive airway pressure and bi-level positive airway pressure machines have been associated with an increased incidence of dry eye disease (DED). To understand how the use of these ventilation masks impacts the eyes, a review of the pathophysiology of DED and an evaluation of recent studies investigating the effects of NIV use on the severity and incidence of this condition were performed. It was found that the use of face masks associated with the ventilation devices exhibited a positive correlation to the incidence and severity of numerous ocular pathologies. However, the benefits of non-invasive mechanical ventilation are undeniable in treating conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and respiratory failure; therefore, proper education, behavioral modifications, and treatment can help reduce or prevent the adverse effects that NIV have on the eyes.

Abstract
Dry eye syndrome (DES) is a common ophthalmological disease that decreases tear secretion and causes dryness, photophobia, pain, severe corneal rupture, and even blindness. Ocular and lacrimal gland inflammation is one of the pathological mechanisms underlying DES. Therefore, effective suppression of inflammation is a crucial strategy for the treatment of DES. Lutein, commonly found in healthy foods, has anti-inflammatory effects in corneal or retina-related cells and may be a potential therapy for DES. The addition of lutein to artificial tears (AT) as an eye-drop formulation for DES treatment in a mouse model was studied in the present work. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was used as a thickener to increase the viscosity of eye drops to prolong drug retention on the ocular surface. A WST-8 assay in human corneal epithelial cells (HCE-2) showed that a concentration of <5 μM lutein (L5) and <1% PVA (P1) maintained the cell viability at 80%. A real-time PCR showed that the inflamed human corneal epithelial cells (HCECs) cocultured with L5P1 had downregulated expression of inflammatory genes such as IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α. In a benzalkonium chloride- (BAC) induced DES mouse model, AT/L5P1 could repair damaged corneas, elevate tear secretion, increase the number of goblet cells, and inhibit the production of inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α, in the cornea. In conclusion, we demonstrate that lutein/PVA as eye drops could prolong the drug ocular retention time and effectively to decrease inflammation in DES mice. Therefore, lutein, obtained from eye drops, has a potential therapeutic role for DES.
