Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies evaluating health information needs in colorectal cancer (CRC) lack specificity in terms of study samples involving patients. We assessed how health information needs of individuals with CRC are met across the care continuum. METHODS We administered an international, online based survey. Participants were eligible for the study if they: 1) were 18 years of age or older; 2) received a diagnosis of CRC; and 3) were able to complete the online health survey in English, French, Spanish, or Mandarin. We grouped participants according to treatment status. The survey comprised sections: 1) demographic and cancer characteristics; 2) health information needs; and 3) health status and quality of life. We used multivariable regression models to identify factors associated with having health information needs met and evaluated impacts on health-related outcomes. RESULTS We analyzed survey responses from 1041 participants including 258 who were currently undergoing treatment and 783 who had completed treatment. Findings suggest that information needs regarding CRC treatments were largely met. However, we found unmet information needs regarding psychosocial impacts of CRC. This includes work/employment, mental health, sexual activity, and nutrition and diet. We did not identify significant predictors of having met health information needs, however, among participants undergoing treatment, those with colon cancer were more likely to have met health information needs regarding their treatments as compared to those with rectal cancer (0.125, 95% CI, 0.00 to 0.25, p-value = 0.051). CONCLUSIONS Our study provides a comprehensive assessment of health information needs among individuals with CRC across the care continuum.

Abstract
Background Patients are increasingly taking an active role in their health. In doing so, they combine both mass and interpersonal media to gratify their cognitive and affective needs (ie, convergence). Owing to methodological challenges when studying convergence, a detailed view of how patients are using different types of media for needs fulfillment is lacking. Objective The aim of this study was to obtain insight into the frequency of reported convergence, how convergence affects what posters write online, motives for posting, and the needs posters are trying to fulfill. Methods Using a hybrid method of content analysis and supervised machine learning, this study used naturally available data to fill this research gap. We analyzed opening posts (N=1708) of an online forum targeting cancer patients and their relatives (Kanker.nl). Results Nearly one-third of the forum opening posts contained signs of convergence in mass or interpersonal media. Posts containing mass media references disclosed less personal information and were more geared toward community enhancement and sharing experiences compared to posts without convergence. Furthermore, compared to posts without signs of convergence, posts that included interpersonal media references disclosed more personal information, and posters were more likely to ask for the experiences of fellow users to fulfill their needs. Within posts containing signs of convergence, posts including interpersonal media references reported fewer shortages of information, disclosed more information about the disease, and were more active in seeking other posters’ experiences compared to posts containing mass media references. Conclusions The current study highlights the intertwining of media platforms for patients. The insights of this study can be used to adapt the health care system toward a new type of health information–seeking behavior in which one medium is not trusted to fulfill all needs. Instead, providers should incorporate the intertwinement of sources by providing patients with reliable websites and forums through which they can fulfill their needs.

Abstract
Objective: No practical method or assessment tool for identifying patients' and their families' health information resource needs in a resource center exists. We sought to assess the health information and resource preferences of patients and their families to guide the planning of a health information resource center (HIRC). Methods: A needs assessment was conducted using convenience sample of patients and families drawn from the National Cancer Centre in Singapore. A survey was conducted to gather data from April 23, 2018, to May 11, 2018, at the Specialist Oncology Clinics (SOCs) and the Ambulatory Treatment Unit. Results: A total of 778 surveys were analyzed, and the majority of the respondents were Chinese (79.8%). There were 449 (57.7%) patients and 317 (40.7%) family members. Among the 778 respondents, the overall top item chosen for facilities, resources, and equipment were a quiet and comfortable area for reading and reflection (77.2%), information about education and support services offered by the center (71.6%), and computers with internet access (63.6%), respectively. The overall top three services needed in the resource center were advice on useful resources (70.6%); announcements on newly received materials, programs, and support services (64.8%); and resource personnel to assist with identifying materials/navigating through resources (53.2%). Written education pamphlets/brochures were rated as the most useful material (74.6%), followed by consumer health books (74.2%) and newsletter (59.6%). The top overall three supportive programs required were nutrition talks and cooking demonstrations (76.7%), counseling (individual, couples, family, and bereavement) (74.3%), and exercise (e.g., Tai Chi, yoga) (68.5%). Conclusions: The findings obtained from this assessment provide guidance to the development of a user-friendly, patient- and family-centric HIRC.

Abstract
Introduction Health literacy is an individual’s ability to access, understand, and utilize information in order to create an informed decision regarding their health. Readability plays an integral role in health literacy as complex health information may be inaccessible to those with low health literacy. The aim of this study is to determine the readability of Canadian patient education material (PEM) for oncology related pharmaceutics. Methods Eighty PEMs from Cancer Care Ontario (CCO) and BC Cancer (BCC) were evaluated for their reading level using a Ford, Caylor, Sticht (FORCAST) analysis. Twenty therapies were then randomly selected and converted to plain text to be analyzed further using the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level (FKGL), the Simple Measure of Gobbledygook (SMOG) Index, the Coleman-Liau Index (CLI), and the Gunning Fog Index (GFI). Results Both PEMs from CCO and BCC were above the recommended reading level with PEMs from CCO, on average, requiring a higher reading level. Within the text, the section which describes side effects was found to be the most complex section of the representative PEMs from BCC. PEMs from BCC which described antibody-based therapies were, on average, more difficult to read than small molecule-based therapies regardless from which section the PEM was being analyzed. These observations were not seen in CCO PEMs. Conclusions Overall, online PEMs from major Canadian cancers associations were written above the recommended reading level. Consideration should be given to revision of these materials, with emphasis on the therapies’ side effects, to allow for greater comprehension amongst a wider target audience.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Approximately 20% of patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer will be eligible for hepato-pancreatico-biliary (HPB) surgery. Studies indicate that high-quality patient education is pivotal in reducing anxiety, improving clinical and performance outcomes, and increasing patient satisfaction. OBJECTIVES This quality improvement project sought to determine the perceived level of preparedness for patients undergoing HPB surgery and to identify information and knowledge gaps in preoperative education. METHODS Convenience sampling was used to collect postoperative information via questionnaire from 50 patients regarding areas of importance. FINDINGS Preoperative information gaps for patient and family education were identified. Improving preparedness for HPB surgery has the potential to improve clinical outcomes, increase quality and patient satisfaction, decrease length of stay, and reduce time to adjuvant therapy.

Abstract
The internet can be a valuable tool in delivering survivorship care to hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) cancer survivors. We describe the reach of INSPIRE, an Internet and social media-based randomized controlled trial, to address healthcare and psychosocial needs of HCT survivors. All survivors 2-10 years after HCT for hematologic malignancy or myelodysplasia from 6 transplantation centers in the US were approached by mail and follow-up calls. Eligible participants had access to the Internet, an email address, and did not have active disease in the past 2 years. We used logistic regression to determine characteristics of eligible survivors who were more or less likely to enroll. Of 2578 eligible HCT survivors, 1065 (41%) enrolled in the study. The mean age of enrollees was 56.3 ± 12.6 years (range, 19 to 89 years), 52% were male, and 94% were white. Survivors less likely to enroll included those who were male, age <40 years, and who received an autologous transplant (all P < .001). Compared with white survivors, African Americans were less likely to enroll (P < .001), whereas Native Americans/Alaska Natives were more likely to join the study (P = .03). The reach of the INSPIRE program was broad, including to survivors who traditionally have less access to resources, such as Native Americans/Alaskan Natives and rural residents. Strategies are still needed to improve the enrollment of online studies of survivorship resources for males, young adults, African American, and autologous HCT survivors because their use may improve outcomes.

Abstract
Chronic diseases are becoming increasingly common and are a priority for action in the Australian health sector. This study investigated the models of support groups preferred by Arab Australians living with chronic conditions. Two hundred fifty-one Arab people with chronic conditions completed a descriptive survey. More than half of participants thought that information on palliative care, financial advice and guidance, social and emotional support for self and family, complementary therapies, and being involved in treatment decisions were extremely useful. Conversely, information about palliative care, financial advice and guidance, and complementary therapies was seen as least useful. Eighty-five percent of participants reported willingness to attend a support program. Participants indicated they preferred the program to be held at a local community organization and facilitated by health care professionals. There was a high level of agreement in the views of Arab participants about the preferred location, type of facilitator, and content of a support program. These findings should inform the design of future programs for Arab immigrants with chronic conditions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study describes the most common cancer-related health information needs among rural cancer survivors and characteristics associated with reporting more information needs. METHODS Rural breast, prostate, and colorectal cancer survivors, two to five years post-diagnosis, identified from an institutional cancer registry, completed a mailed/telephone-administered survey. Respondents were asked about 23 health information needs in eight domains (tests and treatment, side effects and symptoms, health promotion, fertility, interpersonal, occupational, emotional, and insurance). Poisson regression models were used to assess relationships between number of health information needs and demographic and cancer characteristics. RESULTS Participants (n = 170) reported an average of four health information needs, with the most common domains being: side effects and symptoms (58 %), health promotion (54 %), and tests and treatment (41 %). Participants who were younger (compared to 5-year increase, rate ratio [RR] = 1.11, 95 % CI = 1.02-1.21), ethnic minority (RR = 1.89, 95 % CI = 1.17-3.06), less educated (RR = 1.49, 95 % CI = 1.00-2.23), and financially stressed (RR = 1.87, 95 % CI = 1.25-2.81) had a greater number of information needs. CONCLUSIONS Younger, ethnic minority, less educated, and financially strained rural survivors have the greatest need for informational support. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS The provision of health information for rural cancer survivors should consider type of cancer, treatments received, and sociocultural differences to tailor information provided.

Abstract
Cancer impacts not only the patient but also the family members who share the distressing trajectory of the patient. The literature indicates that caregivers have many unmet information needs while providing care and support to the cancer patients, and caregivers have to resort to seeking information to supplement their information needs. This study aims to establish the prevalence of health-information-seeking behaviours among caregivers of cancer patients as a means of ascertaining if their information needs have been met and their information source and resource preference. Data were obtained via a self-reported questionnaire from caregivers of cancer patients at the National Cancer Centre Singapore between 10 September and 7 December 2018. A total of 986 caregivers responded of which 180 (18%) caregivers did not undertake information search and the common reasons were ‘trust healthcare professionals’ (HCPs) more than other sources (64%), and ‘HCPs provide enough information’ (59%). Among the 795 caregivers who have searched for cancer information, about half of these caregivers (54%) have searched information on the Internet and another 15% have obtained their information from HCPs in their most recent search. A total of 371 (47%) caregivers have used their preferred source of information to conduct their most recent information search. The top three most commonly sought information was treatment (35.6%), disease (35.6%) and side effects (26.5%). Almost half (46%) of these caregivers was concerned about the quality of information they have found on the Internet. Our study supports that information-seeking is prevalent amongst caregivers of cancer patients and reveals the prevalence of Internet use and the concerns associated with its use. Patterns of information-seeking revealed a discrepancy between preferred and actual source. The results also suggest that HCPs play a significant role in the information-seeking behaviours of caregivers of cancer patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This review describes the gaps in cancer patient information and comprehension and provides examples of interventions aimed at filling the gaps. RECENT FINDINGS Despite the technologically advanced era, unmet information needs remain a challenge in current cancer care, even though the beneficial effects of adequate information provision are well described.It starts with the basics of patient-physician communication and information exchange. Barriers are described both patient and physician-specific. For patients to comprehend and recall information correctly, information provision should be tailored to the specific patient in content, as well as in readability level. Tailored content based on bidirectional and iterative information exchange (i.e., patients reported outcomes, followed by specific/personalized feedback) is of focus in the current development of interventions aimed at meeting the gaps. However, the effects of such interventions are not overwhelming and the explanation could be multifactorial. SUMMARY Unmet informational needs are still a gap in current cancer care. The effect of eHealth interventions is not yet well established. Key is to educate patients and (future) healthcare professionals in eHealth. Future research should focus on identifying what kind of interventions are able to fill the gaps.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To understand how self-care is carried out by people with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis. METHOD A qualitative approach was used. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews in 12 individuals on hemodialysis in Chile between September and December 2018. Dorothea Orem's self-care theory was used for directed content analysis. RESULTS Three categories emerged: self-care requirements, self-care deficit, and education and information management for self-care. People were aware of the importance of carrying out their self-care. They also stated not to carry out the care actions rigorously enough showing some limitations. Finally, people's knowledge about their condition was usually acquired from the Internet and from their own experience rather than through consultations with a health team. CONSIDERATIONS People are conscious about their role in their health in a flexible way. The health team should know how to recognize conditions interfering in people's self-care and help to overcome them.

Abstract
PURPOSE INSPIRE (INteractive Survivorship Program with Information and REsources) is an online health program that includes a mobile app, website, health action plan, and individualized survivorship care plans for adult hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) survivors. The INSPIRE program integrates two previously effective randomized control trials that tested an internet-based program and patient-centered survivorship care plans for HCT survivors. METHODS Three focus groups were conducted with a total of 22 participants (20 patients, 2 caregivers/patient advocates) to explore patient and caregiver preferences and to optimize the patient-centered emphasis of INSPIRE. Adult (age > 18 years at the time of study entry) HCT recipients had to be at least 1-year post-HCT to participate; caregivers/patient advocates were also eligible. Participants had to be able to communicate in English, could have any diagnosis, transplant type, or donor source, and could have had multiple transplants. RESULTS All patient participants received an allogeneic HCT; average time since HCT was 8 years (range 2-22 years). The majority of participants were female (77.3%). Overall, the tools were well received by participants in this study, particularly the personalized features of all the tools. Major themes included interest in having the ability to tailor features to individual needs, and an interest in tracking information over time. DISCUSSION Engaging patients and caregivers is invaluable to optimize tools designed to improve HCT survivorship care. Print, online, and mobile-based tools, tailored to individual patients' treatment history and requisite follow-up care, can provide otherwise unavailable expertise and guidelines for care.

Abstract
Cancer is considered as one of the main challenges of modern healthcare systems. Cancer patients are obliged to cope with the uncertainty of disease progression. Their anxiety regarding said uncertainty is intensified because they need to constantly make decisions concerning the management of their disease. Information and communication are considered important in cancer management. As a result, the research associated with the impact of healthcare information-seeking behavior on numerous cancer management aspects has intensified and grown in astonishing rates. This work concentrates on the interplay of oncological patients' information-seeking behavior regarding their long-term prognosis. Therefore, a conceptual framework is proposed that identifies and associates several clinical, socio-demographic, psychological, and information-seeking behavioral factors that are likely to be linked with patients' health outcomes.

Abstract
Cancer patients and survivors can experience treatment related side effects that impact nutrition status, as well as unwanted weight loss, weight gain and poor dietary quality. Therefore, they are a group that would benefit from nutrition intervention. A qualitative study was conducted online (six focus groups and two interviews) with 12 oncology providers and 12 survivors in the United States. Participants were asked about the role of nutrition in survivors' health, appropriate components of nutrition care for cancer patients, and strategies to integrate nutrition into oncology care. Feedback on a proposed program, "NutriCare", was also sought. Focus groups were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed for themes. Four main themes emerged: (1) nutrition is an important component of oncology care and source of empowerment for cancer patients; (2) in the NutriCare program, the prescription pad component was viewed as a critical aspect, and there was also a preference for dealing with patients and survivors separately; (3) for implementation, the most appropriate time for providers to talk to patients about nutrition is during the development of the treatment plan. Reinforcement of key nutrition messages by providers was also highlighted; (4) major barriers included lack of time and motivation by providers. Survivors were interested in and providers supportive of integrating nutrition into oncology care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND People with cancer increasingly use the Internet to find information about their illness. However, little is known regarding people's use of cancer-related Internet information (CRII) to manage their patient experience, defined as patients' cumulative perceptions of interactions with the healthcare system during their illness. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to create an understanding of CRII use by people newly diagnosed with cancer and how it shapes their patient experience and informs their interactions with healthcare professionals and healthcare services. METHODS An embedded mixed design guided this study. Nineteen people with cancer were interviewed twice and completed a survey about CRII use. Qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Descriptive statistics summarized the quantitative findings. RESULTS Participants of all ages and educational levels reported using CRII as a pivotal resource, across the cancer trajectory. Cancer-related Internet information played a central role in how patients understood their illness and when they sought and used healthcare services. Two themes emerged based on patient interviews: (1) person in context and (2) management of information. CONCLUSION Cancer-related Internet information plays a crucial role in how people manage their illness and take control of their patient experience. Participants used CRII to learn about their illness, support their efforts to self-manage, and complement information from professionals. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Individuals and institutions can promote and encourage tailored CRII use by engaging patients and suggesting websites based on their needs. Doing so may create efficiencies in service use and empower patients to be more involved in their own care.

Abstract
PURPOSE Our objective was to evaluate health information seeking behaviors in yCRC (young onset colorectal cancer, diagnosed ≤ 50 years) and aCRC (average-age onset colorectal cancer, diagnosed ≥ 50 years). METHODS We administered an international, Internet-based survey to ask individuals diagnosed with CRC how they seek health information, including sources sought and utilization behaviors. We also asked participants their preferences for digital technologies. RESULTS In total 1125 individuals including 455 with yCRC (68.6% female) and 670 with aCRC (53.5% female) participated. There were similar frequencies of seeking among participants with yCRC and aCRC across all sources except for the Internet. Healthcare providers were the most frequently sought source with similar proportions of participants indicating their response as "always" (yCRC, 43.7% vs. aCRC, 43.2%, p = 0.91). We also observed differences in utilization behaviors with more participants with yCRC using the Internet first when seeking information (yCRC 31.6% vs. aCRC 24.3%, p < 0.05) and those with aCRC seeking healthcare providers first (aCRC 61.9% vs. yCRC 45.5%, p < 0.05). With respect to digital technologies, we found a higher proportion of yCRC participants owning smartphones and indicating use of apps related to health/wellness and cancer. CONCLUSION Individuals with yCRC and aCRC similarly sought the same resources for health information on CRC. However, they differed with respect to utilization behaviors, particularly a greater reliance on digital technologies among individuals with yCRC. These have implications for informing age-specific resources and information to support patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Waiting time has been consistently found to be a significant predictor of patient dissatisfaction. The aim of this study is to examine whether positive communication experiences with health care providers could moderate the negative relationship between waiting time and patient satisfaction. METHODS Data from a sample of 4626 breast cancer patients in Germany during their inpatient stay were analyzed. Multilevel logistic regression models were estimated in order to examine whether health literacy-sensitive communication (HL-COM) moderates the negative effects of perceived long waiting times on satisfaction. The models were adjusted for sociodemographic and clinical information and personality. RESULTS Patients who perceived long waiting times were significantly less likely to be satisfied with treatment and with their hospital. Among patients who experienced high HL-COM, the negative relationship between perceived waiting time and satisfaction disappeared, with minimal differences in satisfaction between those who perceived waiting long and those who did not. CONCLUSION While waiting time persists as a significant predictor of satisfaction, this study finds that positive communication experiences with health care providers could potentially alleviate negative effects of long waiting time. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Along with the ongoing efforts to reduce waiting time, the improvement of health literacy-sensitive communication could be instrumental in patients' overall inpatient assessment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The internet and social media provide information and support to cancer survivors, and adolescent and young adults (AYA, age < 40 years), adults, and older (age 65+ years) cancer survivors may have different needs. We evaluated the impact of age on cancer-related internet and social media use and confidence in evaluating online information for cancer-care decision making. MATERIALS AND METHODS Cancer survivors completed a convenience cross-sectional survey evaluating their cancer-related internet and social media use and their confidence in using these resources for decision making. Multivariable regression models evaluated the impact of age on usage patterns and confidence. RESULTS Among 371 cancer survivors, 58 were older adults and 138 were AYA; 74% used the internet and 39% social media for cancer care; 48% felt confident in using online information for cancer-care decisions. Compared to adult survivors, there was a non-significant trend for older survivors to be less likely to use the internet for cancer-care information(aOR = 0.49, 95% CI[0.23-1.03], P = .06), while AYA were more likely to use social media for cancer-care (aOR = 1.79[1.08-2.99], P = .03). Although confidence at using online information for cancer-care decision making did not differ between age groups, increasing age had a non-significant trend towards reduced confidence (aOR = 0.99 per year [0.97-1.00], P = .09). Most commonly researched and desired online information were causes/risk factors/symptoms, treatment options, and prognosis/outcomes. CONCLUSIONS Age may influence the use of internet and social media for cancer-care, and older cancer survivors may be less confident at evaluating online information for cancer-care decision making. Future research should explore other strategies at meeting the informational needs of older cancer survivors.

Abstract
Uncertainty and unmet care needs constantly change in patients with cancer. However, there is a lack of information regarding the changing pattern of these variables. This study aimed to examine the changes in uncertainty and unmet care needs at diagnosis and after surgery among patients with gastric cancer. In total, 86 individuals completed a self-reported questionnaire. Data were collected twice - to measure uncertainty and unmet care needs at cancer diagnosis (T1), and after surgery (T2) - and analyzed using descriptive analysis and a dependent t-test. Uncertainty was moderate at both periods but significantly higher at T1. Unmet care needs were highest in the information domain and lowest in the sexuality domain at both T1 and T2. Only the physical/daily living domain were significantly higher at T2, whereas the information, psychological, and patient care/support domains were significantly higher at T1. Different levels of uncertainty and unmet needs were identified at T1 and T2. Healthcare providers should assess changing unmet care needs at each stage of the cancer trajectory and provide related nursing care and information to this population, even immediately after diagnosis.

Abstract
The public increasingly searches for and discusses health information online, but few studies have examined breast cancer-related posts on visual social media platforms. To shed light on cancer-focused posts on the visual social media platform Pinterest, this study analyzed a random sample of 476 breast cancer-related posts (also referred to as "pins"). Using a quantitative content analysis, pins were coded for type of visual and textual information included and user engagement with pins (i.e., frequency of repins and comments). This novel research supports the current use and potential future utility of Pinterest as a venue for health communication related to breast cancer. Study results have important implications for the development of future health promotion programs on Pinterest aimed at reducing breast cancer risk among women.

Abstract
Patients followed up with a cancer diagnosis must be well-informed about cancer to be able to cope with it. Besides, informing the relatives of the cancer patients who are also experiencing the same process about the diagnosis and follow-up period of cancer is highly important. In the current study, it was aimed to evaluate the information sources about cancer which are referred to by relatives of cancer patients. Three hundred ninety-one cancer patient relatives were included in medical oncology clinic between May 1 and June 30, 2015. A questionnaire was applied to the participants, comprising 12 questions to elicit demographic information and 11 questions about the information sources to which they referred. The study included 183 female and 208 male participants with a mean age of 47.9 ± 13.6 years. While the oncologists were the primary information sources referred to by 87%, the Internet was the second most preferred information source by 72%. The websites most frequently referred were the official websites (70%), the websites of oncology associations (53%), and social networks and forums (32%). The primary factors affecting the Internet preference were age, education level, income level, and place of residence. The Internet was the second most referred information source about cancer by family caregivers following oncologists. Therefore, it is of crucial importance that physicians inform patients and their relatives comprehensively as well as guiding them to correct and reliable information sources.

Abstract
Background The use of the internet to satisfy information needs is widespread among cancer patients. Patients’ decisions regarding whether to act upon the information they find strongly depend on the trustworthiness of the information and the medium. Patients who are younger, more highly educated and female are more likely to trust online information. The objectives of this systematic review were to examine the extent to which cancer patients trust in cancer-related online information, internet websites as a source of cancer-related information or the internet as a medium of cancer information. Methods A systematic review was conducted using five databases (PROSPERO registration number: CRD42017070190). Studies of any kind were included if they measured cancer patients’ trust in online health information. Study quality was assessed using the Research Triangle Institute (RTI) item bank. A narrative synthesis was undertaken to examine the included studies. Results Of the 7,314 citations obtained by the search, seven cross-sectional studies were included in the synthesis. A total of 1,054 patients reported having some or a great deal of trust in online cancer information; 154 patients reported moderately trusting such information; and 833 patients reported having no or little trust in online cancer information, internet websites as a source of cancer-related information or the internet as a medium of cancer-related information. Two of the seven studies reported between group comparisons for the above-stated patient characteristics. The methodological quality of the included studies was diverse. Conclusion The results of the included studies indicates that approximately half of cancer patients appear to trust cancer-specific online information, internet websites as a source of cancer-related information or the internet as an information medium. However, the small number of included studies, high heterogeneity of participants, methods and outcomes calls for further systematic research. It is important to understand that cancer patients do and will increasingly use trusted cancer information websites to search for information concerning their disease. Therefore, physicians and other health care providers should provide more support and advice to these patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study examined the direct and indirect influences of health literacy and access to health information on the quality of life among 205 women living with breast cancer in Ghana. METHODS A cross-sectional survey design was employed. The interviewer-administered instrument included the health literacy scale, questions on access and satisfaction with healthcare information, depression and anxiety scale, and the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast Cancer. RESULTS Access to health information and health literacy had significant indirect effects on quality of life through depression and anxiety. Whereas health literacy had direct influence on quality of life after controlling for other factors, access to information had no direct influence on quality of life. CONCLUSION Health literacy and access to health information improve quality of life in women living with breast cancer by reducing the levels of depression and anxiety. Depression and anxiety serve as possible mechanisms for the positive impacts of access to health information and health literacy on improved quality of life among breast cancer patients. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Health care providers need to ensure that the information needs of patients are met in oncology practice to reduce their negative emotional states which would lead to improved health and wellbeing.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study was a scoping review of research on cancer-related health information seeking and needs of patients, survivor, non-patients, and caregivers. METHODS This study used the COSI model to search for articles published from 2007 to 2017. RESULTS In total, 117 articles with titles and abstracts including the following terms were selected: cancer, health, information, seeking. Non-patients obtained information from the Internet, doctors, and media, whereas patients obtained information from doctors, the Internet, and media. Information needs were the highest for treatment, prognosis, and psychosocial support. Patients had the highest need for information on prognosis and treatment, whereas non-patients had the highest need for general cancer information, prevention, and cancer examination. Caregivers sought information about treatment, psychosocial support, and prevention. CONCLUSION This study revealed an increase in the number of research articles identifying cancer patients' information needs. Cancer patients rely on health professionals for information; thus, relevant materials are needed. Furthermore, not only medical but also psychosocial support information is needed. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS There is a need for cancer information from health professionals, and thus for patient-centered training materials. Furthermore, a survey system to evaluate consumers' cancer information needs should be developed.

Abstract
Patients’ involvement in decision-making regarding their own health care is considered to be of great importance. However, their information needs are frequently reported to be unfulfilled. Few studies have investigated the knowledge, information and support needs of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients and their families. Furthermore, previous studies have predominantly focussed on information needs relating to surgery. No previous studies have been conducted to specifically identify the information needs of AIS patients and their families. An online survey consisting of 18 questions was conducted to investigate the information needs of AIS patients and their families. Completed surveys of 83 participants (76 female, 7 male) from 44 differing postcode areas were analysed. The mean age of the respondents with scoliosis was 13.3 years (SD = 1.9; range = 10–18). Participants identified with feelings including worry, anxiety and being upset. The main information needs related to the cause and prognosis of the condition. Where participants had received information, there were contrasting views of the quality. The findings of this study stress the necessity for information materials to be accurate and applicable to each individual patient. Furthermore, the information should be presented in such a way as to be easily understandable, yet contain the necessary information required by AIS patients and their families.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate cancer patients' need for information, their communication and usage of social media. METHODS We developed a standardized questionnaire comprising sections on information needs, communication behavior and usage of social media with respect to cancer and combined this with a validated instrument on eHealth literacy for patients. This questionnaire was provided online and with the help of bloggers and leaders of social media groups, distributed in their networks. RESULTS The Internet was the most important information source (n = 308; 77.4%). Yet, most of the participants wanted to get information from their doctor (n = 342; 85.9%). With respect to trust in a source of information, oncologists were named most often (n = 285; 71.6%). On the one hand, many participants got in contact with others, especially peers, via social media (n = 319; 80.3%) with a growing bond to their family members on the other hand (n = 324; 81.6%). The cancer diagnosis was an impulse for starting with active participation in social media for some participants (n = 196; 49.2%). CONCLUSIONS With social media gaining importance as source of information for patients, improving the quality of information in these networks is an important task in health care systems.

Abstract
Background Exercise has physiologic and psychological benefits for cancer patients and survivors. Today, various exercises are recommended as adjunct to therapies for cancer patients and survivors. This study was conducted to develop a consensual core list of important knowledge items that primary healthcare providers and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) practitioners need to know on the role of exercises and physical activities in stimulating anticancer immunity. Methods Knowledge items were collected following interviews with key contact experts (4 oncologists, 3 exercise and medicine specialists, 2 researchers, 2 cancer patients, and 3 survivors) and extensive literature review. The collected knowledge items were rated by 9 researchers who conducted research on exercise and cancer. A modified two-iterative Delphi technique was employed among a panel (n = 65) of healthcare providers and CAM practitioners to develop the consensual core list of knowledge items. Results Of the 49 knowledge items, consensus was achieved on 45 (91.8%) items in 6 categories. Of those, 9 (20.0%) were general items on recommending moderate to vigorous habitual exercises and physical activities. The rest of items were related to the effects of habitual exercises and physical activities on the functions of immune system and exposure to carcinogens 16 (35.6%), anticancer therapies 12 (26.7%), metastasis of cancer 3 (6.7%), metabolism within tumors 3 (6.7%), and myokines release 2 (4.4%). Conclusion Formal consensus was achieved for the first time on a core list of knowledge items on how exercises and physical activities might stimulate anticancer immunity. This core list might be considered at the time of developing training/educational interventions and/or continuing education for primary healthcare providers and CAM practitioners. Future studies are still needed to investigate if such consensual lists might improve congruence in cancer care continuum and improve survival rates and wellbeing of cancer patients and survivors.

Abstract
PURPOSE The objective of this study was to estimate the association between SF-12v2® Health Survey (SF-12v2) scores and subsequent health care resource utilization (HCRU) among patients with cancer. METHODS We analyzed 18+ year participants in the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, diagnosed with active cancer or malignancy (n = 647). HCRU was measured by total medical expenditures (MEs) and number of medical events (EVs) in the 6 months following the SF-12v2 assessment. The effect of SF-12v2 scores (physical (PCS) and mental (MCS) component summary scores and the SF-6D health-utility score) on HCRU was estimated using generalized linear models. Estimates were obtained for the entire sample and for the four cancer groups present in the sample: breast, prostate, skin, and lung. RESULTS For PCS and MCS, a one-point better score was associated with 2% lower MEs (P < 0.001) and 2.5% lower MEs (P = 0.015), respectively. A 0.05-point better SF-6D score was associated with 7% lower MEs (P = 0.003). PCS and SF-6D were more strongly associated with MEs for prostate cancer patients (P = 0.009 and P = 0.003) and PCS was more strongly associated with MEs for skin cancer patients (P = 0.019), compared to other cancer groups. A 1-point better PCS predicted 1% lower EVs, while a 0.05 better SF-6D score predicted 4% lower EVs. CONCLUSIONS The significant associations between SF-12v2 scores from oncology patients and subsequent HCRU can guide interpretations of SF-12v2 scores in evaluation of therapies and in health policy decisions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Awareness of sources of information of mastectomy patients has an important role in accessibility of reliable health information sources, thus, when they get information, they can be effective in the treatment and self-care. The present study aimed to identify the sources of information used by women underwent mastectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS The current practical research methodology was qualitative, and research method was conventional qualitative content analysis was performed on 17 patients with breast cancer undergone mastectomy. The sample targeted two hospitals were selected based on criteria of Shaeid Mohammadi and the Persian Gulf and Omid Central chemotherapy in Babdar Abbas. Data were collected by face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted in winter 2015. Qualitative content analysis of data was performed at the same time of data collection. RESULTS Three themes were seemed (medical, interpersonal, and media) sources for explaining the sources of information searching. Subcategories derived from the content of medical (physicians, surgeons, and health workers of health facility centers), interpersonal sources (Family and friends, peers), and media sources (printed, electronic, and Internet). CONCLUSION Given the importance of information on women underwent mastectomy, and their priority in the use of medical sources, necessitates more attention of health system managers and planners in providing essential information and their accessibility.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients want information across their cancer journeys. We investigated what sort of information they want and at what stage in the cancer journey by examining English patients' satisfaction derived from ratings of their care. METHODS Using patient experience data from 209 Clinical Commission Groups (CCGs) involving 72 788 respondents in 2016, overall patient satisfaction ratings and information needs questions were extracted. Novel network analysis techniques were used to construct an undirected weighted concentration network to assess the relationship between information needs and patient satisfaction. RESULTS From the network analysis, we found that patients value information early in the pathway; there were higher associations between patient satisfaction and when information needs are met in earlier phases of the cancer journey. Across the stages of the cancer journey, strong associations between information needs and patient satisfaction emerged during diagnostic testing and also at those points when patients received information provided by the clinical nurse specialists. A mixture of strong and weak associations between patient satisfaction and information needs was found during later phases of the cancer journey, specifically when patients move from treatment to home care. Our study identified that meeting needs for information related to supportive care may be a weaker factor in patient satisfaction than meeting needs for information related to the patient's disease, its treatment and the side effects of treatment. CONCLUSION If patients have their information needs met, especially during stages within the cancer journey when information needs are highest, they are more likely to be satisfied with their care. Our study has implications for information giving and improving patient satisfaction in cancer care.

Abstract
Background: Women with breast cancer experience various challenges. Prescription of health information provides appropriate information at appropriate time to the appropriate person and plays a role in empowering self-care and improving health. The current research aims to evaluate the effect of health information prescription on self-care power of women with breast cancer. Materials and Methods: This semi-experimental quantitative study was done using pretest and posttest method in one group of 61 women with breast cancer selected from the Women's Cancer Center of Khatamolanbia Hospital using purposive sampling method. Data were collected by an author-made self-care questionnaire and patients' self-care score was calculated at the first visit (before health information prescription) and the second visit (after health information prescription). Data were analyzed using the SPSS version 23 software and analysis of variance at a statistical significance level of P < 0.05. Results: Total mean score of self-care in women with breast cancer was 40.97 and 115.3 before and after health information prescription, respectively. Increase of mean was observed in all subscales of self-care score from pretest to posttest so that change in posttest was higher in subscales of effective implementation of treatment and prevention from disabilities and personal functioning regulation (39.44), specialized knowledge on breast cancer (30.46), searching medical services and cooperation with treatment group (28.59), and awareness and attention to impacts and results of breast cancer (16.81). Conclusion: Health information prescription improves self-care power of women with breast cancer, and it is necessary to provide health information services in order to support women's self-care by the health authorities.

Abstract
Women age 45 years or younger with breast cancer, or who are at high-risk for breast cancer due to previously having the disease or to genetic risk, have distinct health risks and needs from their older counterparts. Young women frequently seek health information through the Internet and mainstream media, but often find it does not address their particular concerns, that it is difficult to evaluate or interpret, or even misleading. To help women better understand media coverage about new research, Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered (FORCE) developed the CDC-funded XRAYS (eXamining Relevance of Articles to Young Survivors) program. To assure that the XRAYS program is responsive to the community's needs, FORCE launched a web-based survey to assess where young women seek information about breast cancer, and to learn their unmet information needs. A total of 1,178 eligible women responded to the survey. In general, the breast cancer survivors and high-risk women between ages 18-45 years who responded to this survey, are using multiple media sources to seek information about breast cancer risk, prevention, screening, and treatment. They place trust in several media sources and use them to inform their medical decisions. Only about one-third of respondents to this survey report discussing media sources with their health care providers. Current survey results indicate that, by providing credible information on the quality of evidence and reporting in media reports on cancer, XRAYS is addressing a key need for health information. Results suggest that it will be useful for XRAYS to offer reviews of articles on a broad range of topics that can inform decisions at each stage of risk assessment and treatment.

Abstract
In this study, we document cancer healthcare professionals' views of patients' use of cancer-related Internet information (CRII) and their views on how it informs the ways patients interact with healthcare professionals and services from the point of view of health professionals. We used an interpretive descriptive approach, conducting interviews and focus groups with oncology healthcare professionals (n = 21) at a University-affiliated western Canadian cancer treatment centre. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. We present an initial understanding of how CRII alters, informs and modulates patients' cancer experience and relates to their interactions with healthcare professionals and services. Findings were synthesised into two thematic categories: pragmatic concerns and priorities; and processes and practices. Healthcare professionals were supportive of patients' needs for more information, particularly at key points in the cancer trajectory when information may be lacking. Participants concurred that CRII could positively benefit patients and, if shared with their healthcare professional, could benefit the patient-healthcare professional relationship. Oncology healthcare professionals provide pivotal information to patients; thus, they are well situated to engage patients in discussions about CRII and incorporate this into patient encounters. These actions may open new lines of communication with patients, strengthen the patient-professional relationship and empower patients to be engaged in their own care.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of Internet usage among cancer patients in seeking health-related information and the type of information sought. Sources of information received from, preferences for information sources and the perceived usefulness of information from these sources were also examined in this study. A self-administered questionnaire was used to evaluate the information needs of patients undergoing cancer treatment. The questionnaire also evaluated the current source and preferred source of information as well as their online information seeking behaviours. A total of 411 patients with cancer were recruited from an ambulatory cancer centre. The patients' physicians and healthcare specialists comprised a large majority of the patients' information sources; they were also the most preferred source of information. 59.1% of the respondents used the Internet to search for cancer-related information, namely diagnosis and treatment options, side effects of treatment and complementary and alternative therapy; demonstrating the importance of the above information. Physicians (60.3%) and healthcare specialists (26.5%) were the largest and most preferred sources of information for cancer patients in our study. It was not uncommon for cancer patients to use the Internet to search for additional information demonstrating the need to integrate this tool more effectively for knowledge transfer for those patients who want it. It is important for healthcare professionals to help cancer patients by directing them to sources of quality information (including websites). In addition, the provision of guidelines on how to evaluate health information on the Internet would be helpful to cancer patients.

Abstract
The provision of information about cancer is an important aspect of cancer care. Cancer information provided online is expected to meet the needs of information seekers. Whether information needs vary according to tumor site is largely unknown. We aimed to examine similarities and differences in informational needs by cancer type. Data were collected using a questionnaire administered on Japan's largest cancer information website, “Ganjoho service”. A total of 2782 free descriptive responses in the period from April 2012 to December 2017 were analyzed using text-mining software. We identified the top 10 informational need contents, in order of appearance frequency, for eight tumor sites: gastric, colorectal, esophageal, lung, pancreatic, breast, cervical, and prostate cancer. Frequent information needs common to all tumor sites included symptoms, disease stages, treatments, chance of cure, recovery, metastasis, and recurrence. A need for information about diet, pain, side effects of treatments, complementary and alternative medicine was frequent for some tumor sites. Tumor site-specific information should include the following, according to cancer type: information of scirrhous carcinoma for gastric cancer; unusual feces for colorectal cancer; lung X-ray images for lung cancer; early detection for pancreatic cancer; adenocarcinoma, sexual activity, pregnancy, and childbirth for cervical cancer; breast conservation or reconstruction and triple negative cancer for breast cancer; test values and diagnosis and urinary problems for prostate cancer; and hormone therapy for breast and prostate cancer. Cancer information provided online should meet these frequent informational needs, considering similarities and differences of the information required according to tumor site. We examined similarities and differences in cancer information needs by tumor site. Common needs are symptoms, stages, treatment, cure, recovery, metastasis, recurrence. Site-specific needs include diet, pain, side effects, early detection, test values. Cancer information should be provided to meet frequent needs, by tumor site.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many studies have shown that lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity are related to the incidence of cancer. However, there are few studies on the association between lifestyle factors and cancer prognosis. To investigate the influence of lifestyle factors and psychosocial factors on prognosis, we started a prospective study of women with breast cancer, the Rainbow of KIBOU study-Breast (ROK Study-B) in 2007. As of February 2018, more than 6300 women have been enrolled, thus making this one of the world's largest cancer patient cohort studies. Based on the know-how obtained from this study, we started another new cohort study for colorectal cancer patient (ROK Study-C). METHODS The ROK Study-C is a prospective observational study for colorectal cancer survivors at the National Cancer Center Hospital. Participants fill in several self-administrated questionnaires about lifestyle, psychosocial factors (including posttraumatic growth and benefit finding, support), and quality of life (QOL) 5 times in total: at diagnosis, 3 and 6 months, 1 and 5 years after surgery. CT-scans will be collected to assess body composition and obesity. We also use blood and cancer tissue from the Biobank. The primary endpoint is disease-free survival. The secondary endpoints are overall survival and health-related QOL. The planned sample size is 2000 and the follow-up period is 5 years after the last enrollment. DISCUSSION Recruitment began in December 2015 and the study is still ongoing. The ROK Study-C will contribute to improvements in patient prognosis and yield important evidence for colorectal cancer survivorship.

Abstract
To assess the effectiveness of a purpose-built information-based website to reduce distress among young women with breast cancer. A total of 337 participants (Intervention Group [IG] n = 202; Usual Care Group [UCG] n = 177) returned the completed baseline questionnaires (T1). Details regarding accessing the website were provided to IG participants. Follow-up questionnaires were completed: (a) 3 months (T2) and (b) 6 months after baseline (T3). Outcomes included anxiety and depression (primary outcomes), quality of life (QoL) and unmet information needs. About 70% of the IG accessed the website, typically only once (median: 1, range 1-15), spending a median of 19 min (range: 1-315) on the site. Mean levels of anxiety and depression did not differ between the two groups at T1, T2 or T3. While improvement in total QoL was greater in the IG than UCG between T1 and T2, QoL scores did not differ between groups at T3. The number of unmet needs did not differ between the two groups at T3. The intervention was not effective in reducing anxiety, or depression in this group of women. As a high number of unmet needs were identified, other strategies for addressing these needs of young women with breast cancer are needed.

Abstract
Understanding the preferred sources of health-related information among patients with cancer is essential for designing successful cancer education and prevention strategies. However, little is known about health-related information-seeking practices among patients living in low- and middle-income countries. We studied the preferred sources of health-related information among Mexican patients with cancer and explored which factors influence these choices. The health-related information-seeking practices among patients with cancer treated at a public hospital in Mexico City were evaluated using questions from the Spanish Version of the Health Information National Trends Survey. The characteristics of patients who sought health-related information, and of those who chose the internet as their preferred source of information, were analyzed. Fisher's exact test and logistic regression were used for statistical analyses. One hundred forty-eight patients answered the survey (median age 60 years, 70% female), of which 88 (59%) had sought for health-related information. On multivariate analysis, the only characteristic associated with lower odds of seeking health-related information was increasing age (OR 0.93, 95% CI 0.90-0.97). Sixty-one respondents (69%) listed the internet as their preferred source of health-related information. On multivariate analysis, only being of the female gender (OR 4.9, 95% CI 1.3-18.3) was related with higher odds of preferring other sources of information over the internet. Among Mexican patients with cancer, the Internet is the most widely used information source. Older age was the characteristic most strongly associated with not seeking health-related information, while being female was strongly associated with preferring other sources of information over the Internet.

Abstract
PURPOSE This randomized controlled trial examines the efficacy of INSPIRE, an INternet-based Survivorship Program with Information and REsources, with or without problem-solving treatment (PST) telehealth calls, for survivors after hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). METHODS All adult survivors who met eligibility criteria were approached for consent. Participants completed patient-reported outcomes at baseline and 6 months. Those with baseline impaired scores on one or more of the outcomes were randomized to INSPIRE, INSPIRE + PST, or control with delayed INSPIRE access. Outcomes included Cancer and Treatment Distress, Symptom Checklist-90-R Depression, and Fatigue Symptom Inventory. Planned analyses compared arms for mean change in aggregated impaired outcomes and for proportion of participants improved on each outcome. RESULTS Of 1306 eligible HCT recipients, 755 (58%) participated, and 344 (45%) had one or more impaired scores at baseline. We found no reduction in aggregated outcomes for either intervention (P > 0.3). In analyses of individual outcomes, participants randomized to INSPIRE + PST were more likely to improve in distress than controls (45 vs. 20%, RR 2.3, CI 1.0, 5.1); those randomized to INSPIRE alone were marginally more likely to improve in distress (40 vs. 20%, RR 2.0, CI 0.9, 4.5). CONCLUSIONS The INSPIRE online intervention demonstrated a marginal benefit for distress that improved with the addition of telehealth PST, particularly for those who viewed the website or were age 40 or older. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS Online and telehealth programs such as INSPIRE offer opportunities to enhance HCT survivorship outcomes, particularly for mood, though methods would benefit from strategies to improve efficacy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer pervades many dimensions of an individual's life - demanding a holistic treatment approach. However, studies with combined medical and psychological interventions (MPIs) are sparse. High-level stress and poor quality of life (QoL) can hinder patients' prognosis. The study thus aimed to analyze the impact of combined medical and psychological (psychoeducation, relaxation technique-guided imagery, and cognitive therapy) interventions on stress and QoL of cancer patients - head and neck, breast, and lung cancers. METHODS The study was conducted in cancer hospitals employing one-group pretest-posttest-preexperimental design. RESULTS Findings showed high impact of the combined MPIs in reducing both the overall stress as well as the various components of the stress scale-fear, psychosomatic complaints, information deficit, and everyday life restrictions. Significant changes were also seen in QoL and its domains - global health status, besides functional and symptom scales. Results showed a significant improvement in physical, role and emotional functioning scale, while decrement in fatigue, pain, insomnia, appetite loss, diarrhea, and constipation of symptoms scales. CONCLUSIONS It can be concluded that combined MPI has a positive impact - decreasing stress and improving QoL in cancer patients, which can further enhance their prognosis.

Abstract
Background Health information-seeking behavior is a key concept in the empowerment of women with breast cancer after mastectomy for self-care management. Thus, a real understanding of their information needs and their information-seeking behavior may open up new opportunities for their postsurgery cares. The current research was conducted to identify the information needs and information-seeking motives of women with breast cancer after mastectomy. Materials and Methods This is an applied qualitative research. Samples included 17 women with breast cancer after mastectomy selected from two hospitals of Shahid Mohammadi and Persian Gulf and Omid Central Chemotherapy in Bandar Abbas. Data were collected using semi-structured interview on winter 2014 and analyzed using qualitative content analysis method. Results Three basic contents were extracted including information needs related to mental health, physical health related to disease and personal daily activities along with their subcategories, and representing common experience and perception of mastectomized women seeking for health information. Furthermore, hope, self-esteem, return to life, and available social support resources were expressed as the main information-seeking motives. Conclusion Considering research findings, mastectomized women need to receive information in wide range of health and thus pursue purposeful behavior. Hence, it is necessary that required actions and measures are taken by health-care authorities, especially institutions responsible for women health, to support and meet information needs of the patients considering their information-seeking motives.

Abstract
Background In response to a dearth of formal health information targeted towards patients with brain metastases and their caregivers, a formal informational and supportive care needs assessment was conducted. Methods Brain metastases patients and caregivers who attended a clinic focused on the treatment of brain metastases at a tertiary medical center completed a self-report survey to assess informational needs across 6 domains: medical, physical, practical, social, emotional, and spiritual informational needs. Univariate and multivariate analyses of associations between variables was conducted using linear regression models. Results A total of 109 patients and 77 caregivers participated. Patients and caregivers both prioritized medical and physical informational domains, with a large focus on symptoms and side-effect profiles, significance of brain metastases locations and their implications, available treatment options and their risks and benefits, prognoses and follow-ups if treatment is completed, and end-of-life experiences and supports. One-on-one counseling was preferred by both caregivers and patients for these domains, as well as for practical informational needs; while patients preferred pamphlets to address social, emotional and spiritual informational needs, caregivers preferred one-on-one counseling for the former two domains as well. Conclusions Brain metastases patients and their caregivers prioritize medical and physical informational needs, with one-on-one counseling and pamphlets being the most preferred modalities for information provision. Further exploration regarding existing non-validated resources and the development of tailored resources to address the unique needs of these patient and caregiver populations are warranted.

Abstract
In spite of a referral letter as an important document for communicating between physicians, whether it could also be useful as a source of information for patients has not yet established. We included cancer patients in palliative care setting, all of whom completed a standardized questionnaire regarding their opinion concerning the utility of a referral letter as a source of information and its requirements to achieve a better understanding. Completed questionnaires were received from 50 cancer patients. Ninety-four percent of participants agreed that a referral letter could be of great importance for procuring medical information to them. There was only minor divergence among the participants respecting age, gender, or education. Particular requirements were diagnosis, treatment plan, prognosis, list of drugs, and contact data of involved physicians. Additional important topics were laboratory values, alternatives to current therapy, side effects and supportive therapy, and advices regarding lifestyle and naturopathy. The majority of patients also concluded to accept technical terms in doctor's letters if a glossary supported their comprehension. The majority of patients prefer a concise description of medical information in a referral letter. This form of a letter would boost patients' involvement and help them transfer medical information to other therapists or relatives.

Abstract
PURPOSE The study seeks to assess the care needs of oncology in-patients and clinic attendees or families in two tertiary health institutions. METHODS This was a descriptive study which utilised a quantitative survey questionnaire of all cancer patients diagnosed between January 2014 and September 2016 (n = 547) with the return rate (n = 455) representing 82%. The questionnaire explored assessment of palliative care need. These instruments were used, because patients with cancer and their families are reluctant to talk about the disease. Using a questionnaire was therefore the best means of obtaining their full participation. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics to identify the highest need of patients with cancer patients. The study was approved by the two participating hospitals and the Human and Social Sciences Research Ethics of University of KwaZulu-Natal. FINDINGS The study found that most common needs of patients were information on possibilities of treatment and side effects (92.8%), diagnosis (91.6%), testing (91.1%) and physical symptoms (90.9%). There were also other needs, such as psychological, spiritual and financial needs, related to factors causing distress to patients and their families following diagnosis of cancer. CONCLUSIONS This article focused on needs as expressed by patients and families and offers a useful guide to develop a model for integration of palliative care activities. The findings reveal that patients who are undergoing follow-up care and cancer treatment or investigation are clearly concerned about receiving information on a range of cancer issues. We therefore conclude that patients are able to deal with the disease more effectively when hospitals set up a palliative care team or unit to carry out proper assessment of patients living with cancer.

Abstract
AIM Little is known about how patient groups provide information for patients. We invited 838 patient groups from Europe and North America to participate in an online survey. METHODS The survey covered: (i) availability, accessibility and quality of information provided; (ii) methods by which patient groups communicate; (iii) ways in which patient groups acquire information and confirm its veracity/accuracy; (iv) how people access information online. RESULTS European patient groups were significantly less effective in providing medical-related information than their North American counterparts in: clinical trials, potential causes of cancer, medical research, diagnosis/screening, symptoms, treatments (all p < 0.0001); Recommendations of best practice/care (p < 0.03), healthcare services(p = 0.029) and complimentary medicine (p = 0.01). Clinical trials (p = 0.0006), medical research (p = 0.006) and diagnosis/screening (p = 0.0024) were also areas where North American patients were more likely to require medical-related information. Similar patterns emerged for non-medical information with nutrition (<0.0001), watchful waiting (p = 0.0003), self-management of care (p = 0.0003), prevention (p = 0.002) and emotional issues (p = 0.016) being less effectively communicated by European patient groups. Nutrition was also an area where North American patients were more likely to require non-medical-related information. The main barriers in accessing online information which showed differences between European and North American patients were: perceived lack of need, mainly due to faith in their doctors (p = 0.0001); limited access to the internet (p = 0.0005), limited computer skills (p = 0.02); and lower income (p = 0.027). CONCLUSION These results emphasise the more mature nature of cancer patient engagement/information provision in North America, providing valuable insights and guidance to inform development of more robust and effective cancer patient information communication platforms in Europe.
