Abstract
In recent years, significant efforts to produce healthier wines has led to the replacement or reduction of the addition of sulfites, using alternative substances or techniques. Resveratrol and related biophenols seem to be of great interest, since beyond their protective nature and contrary to sulfites they can positively affect consumer health. These bioactive phytochemicals are naturally produced in grapes as evolutionary acquired mechanisms against pathogens and UV irradiation. However, despite the efforts made so far attempting to develop economic and industrially adopted isolation techniques, available quantities of these biophenols for commercial use are still quite limited. Therefore, such molecules are still not able to meet the needs of industrial use due to their prohibitive marketable cost. In this review we summarize the efforts that have been made to biosynthesize these molecules through alternative, innovative ways. Increasing interest in modern biotechnological approaches has shed light on the exploitation of metabolically engineered microbial factories, instead of plants, to produce molecules of industrial interest. Such approaches, also reviewed here, are expected to lower the cost and appear promising to produce enough surplus to attract further oenological experimentation upon yielding functional wines. This development is expected to attract further industrial attention, continuing the race to partially or totally replace the external addition of sulfites. We also review important physicochemical properties of resveratrol in relation to enriching wines.

Abstract
Trans-Resveratrol (3, 5, 4'-trihydroxystilbene) is a naturally occurring polyphenol easily oxidizable and extremely photosensitive with a short biological half-life that must be encapsulated to maintain its beneficial properties on the human body. The aim of this work is to increase the amount of resveratrol encapsulated using concentrated double water-in-oil-in-water (W1/O/W2) emulsions, making these systems more interesting as ingredient for functional food products and/or pharmaceutical formulations. The concentration of the inner emulsion (W1/O) for several external (W1O/W2) ratios was optimized in terms of encapsulation efficiency (EE), colloidal stability and rheological behaviour. W1/O emulsions formulated with ratios of 30/70 and 40/60 were used to obtain double emulsions (with ratios of 20/80 up to 80/20 of W1O/W2). Trans-Resveratrol EE increased up to 90 % when the most concentrated double emulsions were prepared for both W1/O ratios tested. The maximum resveratrol concentrations on double emulsions were 10.8 mg/L and 14.4 mg/L when 30/70 and 40/60 of W1/O ratios were used, respectively. However, longer time stability was found for double high internal phase emulsions (W1O/W2) with a ratio of 30/70 of W1/O. The double emulsion formulated with a 80/20 W1O/W2 volumetric ratio together with 30/70 of W1/O seems suitable to be used as ingredient for pharmaceutical and food devices/products due to its high colloidal stability, clearly pseudoplastic and elastic behaviour, high EE and large trans-Resveratrol carrier capacity.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to fabricate ternary complexes composed of pea protein isolate (PPI), high methoxyl pectin (HMP) and individual surfactants including rhamnolipid (Rha), tea saponin (TS) and Ethyl lauroyl arginate (LAE), for the delivery of resveratrol (Res). A combination of electrostatic attraction and hydrophobic interaction was dominantly responsible for the formation of HMP-surfactant-PPI complexes. The physicochemical properties of the ternary complexes were affected by surfactant types as well as mass ratios of individual surfactant to PPI. HMP-Rha-PPI1:1, HMP-TS-PPI1:1 and HMP-LAE-PPI1:25 complexes had higher denaturation temperatures of 82.78 ± 0.31, 80.21 ± 0.02 and 79.98 ± 0.86 ℃, respectively. The HMP-Rha-PPI1:1 ternary complex could be an effective delivery system, which were effective to retard photo- and thermal- degradation of Res as well as delayed the release of Res in in vitro digestion.

Abstract
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a serious and rapidly growing threat to human beings. Emodin has a potent activity against MRSA; however, its usage is limited due to high hydrophobicity and low oral bioavailability. Thus, the coaxial electrospinning nanofibers encapsulating emodin in the core of hydrophilic poly (vinylpyrrolidone), with a hygroscopic cellulose acetate sheath, have been fabricated to provide long-term effect against MRSA. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy confirmed the nanofibers had a linear morphology with nanometer in diameter, smooth surface, and core-shell structure. Attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectra, X-ray diffraction patterns, and differential scanning calorimetric analyses verified emodin existed in amorphous form in the nanofibers. The nanofibers have 99.38 ± 1.00% entrapment efficiency of emodin and 167.8 ± 0.20% swelling ratio. Emodin released from nanofibers showed a biphasic drug release profile with an initial rapid release followed by a slower sustained release. CCK-8 assays confirmed the nontoxic nature of the emodin-loaded nanofibers to HaCaT cells. The anti-MRSA activity of the nanofibers can persist up to 9 days in AATCC147 and soft-agar overlay assays. These findings suggest that the emodin-loaded electrospun nanofibers with core-shell structure could be used as topical drug delivery system for wound infected by MRSA.

Abstract
Objectives: The objective of the present work to encapsulate the resveratrol (RES) inside the chitosan-based microsponges, employing the systematic optimization by 33 Box-Behnken design for the colonic targeting.Significance: Enhanced therapeutic efficacy of RES-loaded microsponges and matrix tablets, vis-a-vis pureRES for ulcerative colitis.Methods: RES-loaded microsponges were prepared employing the systematic optimization by 33 Box-Behnken design for the colonic targeting. The best-optimizedRES-loaded microsponge was compressed in the form of a tablet, employing pectin as a matrix-forming material. The encapsulation of RES inside microsponge was confirmed by XRD, DSC and FT-IR. Further, both RES-loaded microsponges and matrix tablets were evaluated for in vitro release kinetics and further evaluated for in vivo ulcerative colitis animal model.Results: Optimization experiments was obtained as the high value of r2 (particle size = 0.9999; %EE = 0.9652; %CDR = 0.9469) inferred excellent goodness of fit. SEM revealed nearly spherical and porous nature of RES-loaded microsponges. The in vitro release kinetic showed zero-order release for RES-loaded microsponges and Korsmeyer-Peppas model for matrix tablets. The pharmacodynamic studies, in ulcerative colitis rat model, indicated better therapeutic efficacy of drug-loaded microsponges and matrix tablets, vis-a-vis pure RES. Thus, the present study advocates the potential of RES based microsponges delivered by pectin based matrix tablet, in the treatment of various colonic disorders.Conclusion: The present study proved that RES-loaded microsponges and matrix tablets based on chitosan and pectin can be the ideal delivery system for colonic delivery of RES.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Over the past few decades, nanotechnology has dramatically advanced; from the precise strategies of synthesizing modern nanostructures to methods of entry into the body. Using nanotechnology in diagnosis, drug delivery, determining signaling pathways, and tissue engineering is great hope for the treatment of stroke. The drug-carrying nanoparticles are a way to increase drug absorption through the mouth or nose in treating the stroke. OBJECTIVE In this article, in addition to explaining pros and cons of oral and intra-nasal administration of nanoparticles in the brain ischemia treatment of animal models, the researchers introduce some articles in this field and briefly mentioned their work outcomes. METHODS A number of relevant published articles 183 were initially collected from three popular databases including PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus. The articles not closely related to the main purpose of the present work were removed from the study process. The present data set finally included 125 published articles. RESULTS Direct delivery of the drug to the animal brain through the mouth and nose has more therapeutic effects than systemic delivery of drugs. The strategy of adding drugs to the nanoparticles complex can potentially improve the direct delivery of drugs to the CNS. CONCLUSION Despite the limitations of oral and intra-nasal routes, the therapeutic potential of oral and intra-nasal administration of nano-medicines is high in cerebral ischemia treatment.

Abstract
Resveratrol (RES) is a stilbenoid polyphenol with interesting antitumor activity compromised by its poor solubility and bioavailability; thus, new approaches are necessary to improve its therapeutic effectiveness. In the present study, bovine serum albumin coated layered double hydroxide (LDH-BSA) was employed to encapsulate RES in order to overcome the above-mentioned usage limits. To evaluate the feasibility of neutral RES complexation with cationic LDH, we carried out molecular dynamics simulation in order to predict its structure and stability. In the supramolecular complex formed with LDH, RES disposes itself in the interlamellar region of LDH where it is stabilized by intermolecular interactions. The physico-chemical characteristics of the resulting nanocomplexes were studied by X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The encapsulation efficiency and drug release studies were also performed. The combined experimental and computational approach were highly effective in giving insight into the interaction mode of the neutral RES with the charged LDH. Finally, the nanohybrid's anticancer ability was evaluated in human lung cancer cell line (A549) resulting in higher activity with respect to bare RES. Overall, the results showed that the nanocomposites are suitable for biomedical applications as delivery agents of RES.

Attenuated total reflectance-infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy is a robust tool for molecular characterisation of matter. Applied to semi-solid formulations, it enables rapid and reliable data collection without pre-analytical requirements. Based on nano-encapsulated Omegalight®, a skin-lightening active cosmetic ingredient (ACI), incorporated in a hydrogel, it is first demonstrated that, despite the high water content and the chemical complexity of the samples (i.e. number of ingredients), the spectral features of the ACI can be detected and monitored. Secondly, with a total of 105 samples divided into a training set (n = 60) and an unknown set (n = 45) covering a 0.5% w/w-5% w/w concentration range, the study further investigates the quantitative performance of ATR-IR coupled with partial least squares regression (PLSR). Through a step-by-step approach in testing different cross-validation protocols, accuracy (root mean square error of cross-validation (RMSECV)) and linearity between the experimental and predicted concentrations (R2) of ATR-IR are consistently evaluated to be respectively 0.097% (w/w) and 0.995 with a lower LOD = 0.067% (w/w). Subsequently, further evaluation of the accuracy (relative error of the predicted concentration compared with the true value, expressed as %) of the analysis was undertaken with the 45 unknown samples that were defined as unknown and analysed by PLSR. The outcome of the analysis demonstrates the ruggedness and the consistency of the determination performed using the ATR-IR data. With an average relative error of 2.5% w/w and only 5 samples out of 45 blind samples exhibiting a relative error above the 5% threshold, high accuracy quantification of the nano-encapsulated ACI can be unambiguously achieved by means of the label-free and non-destructive technique of ATR-IR spectroscopy. Ultimately, the study demonstrates that the analytical capabilities of ATR-IR hold significant potential for applications in the cosmetics industry, and although the path remains long, the present study is one step further to support validation of the technique, albeit for the specific case of Omegalight®.

Abstract
Resveratrol (RSV) is a well-known natural derivative with a wide range of biological and pharmacological activities. Despite of these demonstrated properties, it exhibits low both aqueous solubility and chemical stability and therefore low bioavailability. Consequently, the major concern of the technological research is to exploit delivery systems able to overcome bioavailability problems. In the recent past liposomes have been successfully studied for these purposes. In this paper, 1H-NMR spectroscopy, Nuclear Overhauser Spectroscopy (NOESY) as well as Paramagnetic Relaxation Enhancements (PRE) experiments have been carried out to quantitatively investigate the incorporation of resveratrol, at both the liposome preparation stage and by preformed liposomes, also with the aim to characterize resveratrol- soybean phosphatidylcholine (P90G) lipid bilayer interactions. Overall results of 1H NMR spectroscopy analysis suggest that RSV is located nearby the phosphocholine headgroups and also provide quantitative data on the incorporation of RSV (5% w/w), which corresponds to a 150-fold increase with respect to the solubility of RSV in water. Beside, considering that the same level of RSV incorporation was obtained via spontaneous uptake by preformed P90G liposomes, it can be concluded that RSV easily diffuses through the lipid bilayer.

Abstract
Aim: Oat protein-shellac nanoparticles (NPs) were developed as a delivery system for resveratrol to improve bioavailability. Materials & methods: The NPs were prepared from w/w emulsion followed by cold-gelation. In vitro release and cell uptake mechanism of NPs were estimated by HPLC and confocal laser scanning microscopy. In vivo bioavailability and hepatoprotective activity of encapsulated resveratrol were studied using rat models. Results & conclusion: NPs (90-300 nm) protected resveratrol in gastric fluid, while allowing controlled release into small intestine in vitro. The optimized NPs showed improvement in resveratrol cell uptake and transport when compared with free resveratrol. NP-100S increased resveratrol bioavailability up to 72.4%, and the absorbed resveratrol effectively prevented CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity by attenuating oxidative stress.

Abstract
Ageing is an inevitable fundamental process for people and is their greatest risk factor for neurodegenerative disease. The ageing processes bring changes in cells that can drive the organisms to experience loss of nutrient sensing, disrupted cellular functions, increased oxidative stress, loss of cellular homeostasis, genomic instability, accumulation of misfolded protein, impaired cellular defenses and telomere shortening. Perturbation of these vital cellular processes in neuronal cells can lead to life threatening neurological disorders like Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease, Huntington's Disease, Lewy body dementia, etc. Alzheimer's Disease is the most frequent cause of deaths in the elderly population. Various therapeutic molecules have been designed to overcome the social, economic and health care burden caused by Alzheimer's Disease. Almost all the chemical compounds in clinical practice have been found to treat symptoms only limiting them to palliative care. The reason behind such imperfect drugs may result from the inefficiencies of the current drugs to target the cause of the disease. Here, we review the potential role of antioxidant polyphenolic compounds that could possibly be the most effective preventative strategy against Alzheimer's Disease.

Abstract
Bio-availability is a major concern in delivery of dietary phytochemicals for better bio-efficacy. The reduced bio-availability of food bioactive compounds is evident due to degradation during human digestion process which involves liberation, absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination. The bio-efficacy of any nutrient can be increased by increasing bio-availability. Different technologies are available for engineered efficient delivery systems; still many challenges remain with advancement of delivery systems. The ease of preparedness and adaptability of liposomes has resulted in wide-range of applicability and acceptability in scientific field, especially as delivery vehicles. In view, of properties like biocompatibility and biodegradability, liposomes have been modified with different usable methodologies for delivery of phytochemicals. The aim of this review is to abridge liposomes, methods of preparation, their application as delivery cargo in dietary phytochemicals, result of using different preparation techniques on properties.

Abstract
Many functional food ingredients are poorly soluble in water, susceptible to chemical degradation, and incompatible with surrounding food matrix. Other issues are related to limited oral bioavailability, unpleasant sensory properties, and poor release profiles. Nanoencapsulation of functional food ingredients can help increase their water solubility/dispersibility in foods and beverages, improve their bioavailability by exhibiting good dose-dependent functionalities, mask undesired flavors/tastes to reduce the adverse effect on mouth-feel, enhance shelf-life and compatibility during production, storage, transportation and utilization of food products, and control release rate or specific delivery environment for better performance on their functionalities. This chapter provides an overview of different delivery systems for different functional food ingredients, the types of materials suitable for wall materials or building blocks of nanocapsules, the fabrication methods to assemble different delivery systems and release these active ingredients under different physiological conditions.

Abstract
Bioaccessibility and bioavailability of some hydrophobic bioactives (e.g., carotenoids, polyphenols, fat-soluble vitamins, phytosterols and fatty acids) are limited due to their low water solubility, and in some instances low chemical stability. Nanotechnology involving nanometric (r<500nm) delivery systems, can be used to improve the solubility and thus enhance the bioaccessibility and bioavailability of hydrophobic compounds. Nanometric delivery systems, derived from food grade phospholipids and biopolymers adopt many forms, including liposomes, micelles, micro/nanoemulsions, particles, polyelectrolyte complexes, and hydrogels. The small particle sizes and customized materials used to create delivery systems confer their unique properties such as higher stability and/or resistance to enzymatic activity in the gastrointestinal tract. This chapter provides an overview of bioaccessibility and bioavailability of different classes of hydrophobic bioactive compounds, focusing on nanometric delivery systems and methods of evaluation.

BACKGROUND Breast cancer is worldwide commonly found malignancy in women and effective treatment is regarded as a huge clinical challenge even in the presence of several options. Extensive literature is available that demonstrating polyphenols, the richly introduce phytopharmaceuticals as anticancer agents. Among these polyphenols, resveratrol, silibinin, quercetin, genistein, curcumin reported to have an awesome potential against breast cancer. However, till now no comprehensive survey found about the anticarcinogenic properties of luteolin against breast cancer. SCOPE AND APPROACH This review targeted the available literature on luteolin in the treatment of breast cancer, effects in combination with other anticancer drugs with possible mechanisms. KEY FINDINGS AND CONCLUSION An outstanding therapeutic potential of luteolin in the treatment of breast cancer has been recorded not just as a chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic agent yet complemented by its synergistic effects with other anticancer therapies such as cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, and NSAID such as celecoxib, and possible underlying mechanisms. Ideally, this review will open new dimensions for luteolin as an effective and safe therapeutic agent in diminishing breast cancer.

Abstract
A series of biohydrogels based on mixtures of kappa-carrageenan (κ-carrageenan, κ-C) and gelatin were evaluated as potential soft delivery vehicles for the encapsulation and subsequent release of non-ionic surfactant vesicles (niosomes) loaded with resveratrol (RSV). The niosomes were prepared using a mixture of amphiphilic lipids Tween 80 and Span 80 in water. The results showed that RSV-niosomes did not significantly affect the hydrogelation properties of the biopolymer mixture. Moreover, in vitro drug release experiments from biohydrogels containing RSV-niosomes were successfully carried out under simulated gastrointestinal conditions. The RSV-niosomal liberation profiles from hydrogels were fitted using first order kinetics, Higuchi, Korsmeyer-Peppas and Weibull drug release models, showing the prevalence of diffusion mechanisms in each case. In addition, the RSV release was easily tuned by adjusting the total concentration of κ-C : gelatin. Interestingly, the niosomal-hydrogel system was also found to prevent the trans-to-cis photoisomerization of RSV.

Abstract
Ascorbic acid (AC) used as antioxidant in embryo culture is very sensitive and degrades unavoidably in aqueous solution. Methyl-β-cyclodextrin (CD) improved the stability of AC in solution to elevated temperature, light, humidity and oxidation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the complex AC-CD during in vitro maturation (IVM) or in vitro culture (IVC) on oocyte developmental competence and subsequent embryo development and quality. AC-CD (100 µM) was added to IVM media, and maturation level and embryo development were examined. Matured oocytes, their cumulus cells and produced blastocysts were snap-frozen for gene expression analysis by RT-qPCR. Besides, in vitro-produced zygotes were cultured with 100 µM of AC-CD and blastocysts were as well snap-frozen for gene expression analysis. A group without AC-CD (control- ) and other with CD (control+ ) were included. No differences were found on maturation, cleavage or blastocyst rates. However, in matured oocytes, AC-CD downregulated BAX, GPX1 and BMP15. In cumulus cells, AC-CD downregulated BAX/BCL2 and GSTA4 while upregulated BCL2 and CYP51A1. The expression of SL2A1, FADS1, PNPLA and MTORC1 was downregulated in blastocysts derived from oocytes matured with AC-CD, while in blastocysts derived from zygote cultured with AC-CD, CYP51A1 and IGF2R were downregulated and PNPLA2 was upregulated. In conclusion, AC-CD in both IVM and IVC media may reduce accumulated fat by increasing lipolysis and suppressing lipogenesis in blastocysts derived from both oocytes and zygotes cultured with AC-CD, suggesting that CD improves the quality of embryos and bioavailability of AC during IVM and IVC.

Abstract
In this study, the resveratrol spray-dried emulsions were developed using a quality-by-design approach. Further, the product and process factors that affected the quality of the spray-dried emulsions were analyzed and illustrated using an Ishikawa diagram. The product and process risks were prioritized using a risk-ranking system. The low methoxyl pectin (LMP) amount, caprylic/capric glyceride (CCG) amount, homogenization time, homogenization speed, inlet temperature, pump speed, drying airspeed, and de-blocking speed were observed to be the eight highest risk factors. Further, the criticality of these eight factors on the responses was determined using the Plackett-Burman design. Increasing the LMP amount increased the particle size, whereas increasing the CCG amount enhanced the drug-loading capacity and drug dissolution at 5-min intervals (Q5) and decreased the moisture content. Q5 was positively affected by the homogenization speed and pump speed; however, it was negatively affected by the LMP amount. The spraying efficiency was affected by the pump speed and the LMP amount. Further, the risk level of the homogenization time, inlet temperature, drying airspeed, and de-blocking speed were reduced. However, the LMP amount, CCG amount, homogenization speed, and pump speed were observed to remain at high risk and require further investigation. The risk assessment and Plackett-Burman design mitigated the risks and identified the critical factors that affected the quality of the resveratrol spray-dried emulsions and the spray-drying process.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive and neurodegenerative disorder of the cortex and hippocampus, which eventually leads to cognitive impairment. Although the etiology of AD remains unclear, the presence of β-amyloid (Aβ) peptides in these learning and memory regions is a hallmark of AD. Therefore, the inhibition of Aβ peptide aggregation has been considered the primary therapeutic strategy for AD treatment. Many studies have shown that resveratrol has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties and can decrease the toxicity and aggregation of Aβ peptides in the hippocampus of AD patients, promote neurogenesis, and prevent hippocampal damage. In addition, the antioxidant activity of resveratrol plays an important role in neuronal differentiation through the activation of silent information regulator-1 (SIRT1). SIRT1 plays a vital role in the growth and differentiation of neurons and prevents the apoptotic death of these neurons by deacetylating and repressing p53 activity; however, the exact mechanisms remain unclear. Resveratrol also has anti-inflammatory effects as it suppresses M1 microglia activation, which is involved in the initiation of neurodegeneration, and promotes Th2 responses by increasing anti-inflammatory cytokines and SIRT1 expression. This review will focus on the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory neuroprotective effects of resveratrol, specifically on its role in SIRT1 and the association with AD pathophysiology.

Abstract
Attenuated Total Reflectance-Infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy holds great promise for industrial applications as a quality control tool for complex galenic formulations. Although the technique is often promoted for the molecular information it delivers in a label free and cost effective fashion, other advantages can emerge compared to the gold standard analytical tools such as liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The present study demonstrates how ATR-IR measurements enable accurate quantitative analysis of an active cosmetic ingredient such as Omegalight® encapsulated in a complex alginate based nano-capsule. The study demonstrates how precise concentrations can be obtained without the requirement for fastidious extraction and separation protocols prior to ATR-IR analysis. However, data mining remains a crucial aspect with particular emphasis on the preprocessing of the data that will be subjected to Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR) analysis. Therefore, different pre-processing methods have been evaluated to investigate the relationship between corrections applied and PLSR outcomes (i.e. precision, ratio of performance to deviation (RPD) and accuracy of the analysis). Ultimately, it has been found that, against all expectations, some of the preprocessing methods do not necessarily lead to improvements in the end result, while Extended Multiplicative Scattering Correction (EMSC) is the only one which delivers satisfying results, as defined by a Root Mean Square Error (RMSEV) of 0.07% (w/w) and a RPD greater than 30 when performing analysis over the range 0.4-8.2% (w/w). Despite the presence of large amounts of additives such as glycerol and preservatives in the formulation, implementing Leave One Out Cross Validation (LOOCV) further validates the method with a RPD of 18 and relative errors for the predicted concentrations below the 5% (w/w) threshold, hence demonstrating that ATR-IR has analytical capabilities for applications in the cosmetic industry.
