Abstract
The syntheses and characterization of several octahedral hexatantalum cluster compounds of formula (ArN)14Ta6O are described (Ar=Ph, p-MeC6H4, p-MeOC6H4, p-t-BuC6H4, p-BrC6H4, m-ClC6H4). Treatment of Bn3Ta=N-t-Bu (Bn=CH2C6H5) or pentakis(dimethylamido)tantalum with an excess of the appropriate aniline and stoichiometric water or tantalum oxide afforded varying yields of arylimido clusters. The structures of two species were confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), while the identity of the central oxygen atom was elucidated by electrospray mass spectrometry (MS) using 17O/18O-enriched material. The title species are very air- and moisture-sensitive but quite thermally stable in solution. Experimentally determined optical properties and oxidation/reduction potentials, as well as some computational results, indicate that they possess an electronic structure wherein the highest occupied molecular orbitals are ligand-centered, while the lowest unoccupied orbitals are metal-centered and delocalized throughout the tantalum cage. Whereas chemical oxidation resulted in cluster decomposition, reduction with decamethylcobaltocene yielded stable salts of formula [Cp*2Co][(ArN)14Ta6O] (Ar=Ph, Ar=p-MeC6H4). Small-molecule reactivity studies on one of these clusters showed that its imido functionalities are moderately reactive toward oxide donors but inert with respect to metallaheterocycle-forming processes. Clean imido/oxo exchange was observed with aldehydes and ketones, leading cleanly to organic imines with no soluble byproducts being observed. This exchange was also observed with a rhenium oxo compound (generating an imidorhenium complex as the only soluble species). All 14 imido groups were transferred in these reactions, and no mixed-ligand cluster intermediates were ever observed.

Abstract
A synthetic route of potentially wide scope is reported herein for the organoimido functionalization of polyoxotungstates. This report focuses on the reaction between the monovacant lacunary polyoxotungstate, alpha-((n-C4H9)4N)4H3[PW11O39], and W(NC6H5)Cl4 in anhydrous acetonitrile. Evidence from 1H, 31P, 183W, and 1H-183W HMQC NMR spectroscopy, as well as cyclic voltammetry, electronic absorption, and elemental analysis, is presented for the formation of alpha-[PW12O39(NC6H5)]3- (2) of Cs symmetry, which is structurally related to Td alpha-[PW12O40]3- (3) by formal oxide substitution. The electronic structure of 2 is significantly perturbed from 3 with significant arylimido-->tungsten charge transfer, primarily localized to the W(NC6H5) fragment with secondary charge delocalization onto the remaining W and corner-shared bridging O atoms. This is consistent with the approximately 800 ppm downfield 183W NMR shift for the phenylimido-tungsten, modest cathodic shifts in reversible redox potentials, electronic and IR spectra, and density functional theory calculations.

Abstract
The electronic structures of Lindqvist type functionalized polyoxometalates (POM) ([Mo6O18R]n- R=O, NO, NAr, NNAr, NNAr2; n=2, 3) have been investigated using density functional methods. We discuss the role of the replacement of terminal oxo ligands by pi-donor/acceptor multiple-bonded nitrogenous ligands on the basis of geometrical parameters, charge analyses, reactivity indexes, and vibrational spectra. The calculated reactivity indexes (chemical potential, electronegativity, hardness, and electrophilicity) indicate that the most reactive functionalized POMs are those substituted by pi-acceptor ligands. These pi-acceptor ligands induce a decrease in the hardness and an increase in the chemical potential and electrophilicity, thus increasing the reactivity. Our calculations are in reasonable agreement with reported experimental data.

Abstract
[(n-C4H9)4N]2[Mo6O18(N-1-C10H(6)-2-CH3)] (1) has been prepared by the reaction of 1-amino-2-methylnaphthalene hydrochloride with [(n-C4H9)4N]4[alpha-Mo8O26] in the presence of 1,3-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide. Three solvent-free crystalline phases are isolated from the mixed solvents of acetone and acetic ether. The X-ray single-crystal structures of the three phases have been determined, showing the packing and supramolecular assembly characters (pseudohigher symmetry, helical chains, and pi-pi stacking) by which the effect of solvent polarity and crystallization speed on polymorphism in organic-inorganic hybrids has been demonstrated.

Abstract
A series of novel organic-inorganic assemblies, [Zn(Meen)2]2[(4,4'-bipy)Zn2As8V12O40(H2O)] (1), [Zn(en)2(H2O)][Zn(en)2(4,4'-bipy)Zn2As8V12O40(H2O)].3H2O (2), [[Zn(en)3]2[Zn2As8V12O40(H2O)]].4H2O.0.25bipy (3) and [Zn2(en)5][[Zn(en)2][(bpe)HZn2As8V12O40(H2O)]2].7H2O (4) [en = ethylenediamine, Meen = 1,2-diaminopropane, 4,4'-bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine, and bpe = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane] constructed from organically modified Zn-substituted polyoxovanadates and zinc organoamine subunits have been synthesized. Each anion cluster of compound 1 is directly linked by the 4,4'-bipy ligand into a one-dimensional (1D) straight chain. The secondary metal complex [Zn(Meen)2]2+ acts as an isolated countercation. The 1D chain structure of 2 is similar to that of 1 but sinuate because of the secondary metal complex [Zn(en)2]2+ decorated on the anion cluster. The en ligands covalently bonding to the surface anion of 3 not only support the secondary metal complex [Zn(en)2]2+ but also coordinate to another anion through the secondary metal complex [Zn(en)2]2+ bridge to form an "eight-shaped" chiral helix. The unprecedented 2D layer of compound 4 with large nanosized inner rectangular cavities [33.669(6) x 14.720(8) A] is successfully achieved through the anion clusters polymerized first into chains by flexible organic ligands and then secondary metal complexes bridged between the chains. The different coordination abilities and geometries of the bidentate organodiamine ligands used in the four-reaction systems play important roles in the formation of the final structures: from straight chains to sinuate chains, to helical chiral chains, and finally to a 2D layer with helices.

Abstract
Representative members of a new family of covalently bonded charge-transfer molecular hybrids, of general formula [(eta5-C5H5)Fe(mu,eta6:eta1-p-RC6H4NN)Mo(eta2-S2CNEt2)3] +PF6- (R: H, 5+PF6-; Me, 6+PF6-; MeO, 7+PF6-) and [(eta5-C5Me5)Fe(mu,eta6:eta1-C6H5NN)Mo(eta2-S2CNEt2)3]+PF6-, 8+PF6-, have been synthesized by reaction of the corresponding mixed-sandwich organometallic hydrazines [(eta5-C5H5)Fe(eta6-p-RC6H4NHNH2)]+PF6- (R: H, 1+PF6-; Me, 2+PF6-; MeO, 3+PF6-) and [(eta5-C5Me5)Fe(eta6-C6H5NHNH2)]+PF6-, 4+PF6-, with cis-dioxomolybdenum(VI) bis(diethyldithiocarbamato) complex, [MoO2(S2CNEt2)2], in the presence of sodium diethyldithiocarbamato trihydrate, NaSC(=S)NEt2.3H2O, in refluxing methanol. These iron-molybdenum complexes consist of organometallic and inorganic fragments linked each other through a pi-conjugated aryldiazenido bridge coordinated in eta6 and eta1 modes, respectively. These complexes were fully characterized by FT-IR, UV-visible, and 1H NMR spectroscopies and, in the case of complex 7+PF6-, by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Likewise, the electrochemical and solvatochromic properties were studied by cyclic voltammetry and UV-visible spectroscopy, respectively. The electronic spectra of these hybrids show an absorption band in the 462-489 and 447-470 nm regions in CH2Cl2 and DMSO, respectively, indicating the existence of a charge-transfer transition from the inorganic donor to the organometallic acceptor fragments through the aryldiazenido spacer. A rationalization of the properties of 5+PF6--8+PF6- is provided through DFT calculations on a simplified model of 7+PF6-. Besides the heterodinuclear complexes 5+PF6--8+PF6-, the mononuclear molybdenum diazenido derivatives, [(eta1-p-RC6H4NN)Mo(eta2-S2CNEt2)3] (R: H, 9; Me, 10; MeO, 11), resulting from the decoordination of the [(eta5-C5H5)Fe]+ moiety of complexes 5+PF6--7+PF6-, were also isolated. For comparative studies, the crystalline and molecular structure of complex 10.Et2O was also determined by X-ray diffraction analysis and its electronic structure computed.

Abstract
Electronic spectrum of organoimide derivatives of hexamolybdates have first been calculated within the time-dependent density-functional theory in conjunction with Van Leeuwen-Baerends (LB94) exchange correlation potential, statistical average of orbital potentials (SAOP), and gradient-regulated connection potential (GRAC), respectively. The GRAC yields much better agreement with experiments for the excitation energies comparing with both LB94 and SAOP. The analysis of transition nature indicates that there is a significant difference between the diagonal and the orthogonal substituted derivatives. The static and dynamic third-order polarizabilities are calculated using time-dependent density-functional theory combined with the sum-over-states method. The results show that these derivatives possess remarkable large molecular third-order polarizabilities, especially for system 8 with -17882.6 x 10(-36) esu. This value is about 250 times that for the C(60) molecule. Adding the organoimide segment to the [Mo(6)O(19)](2-) can substantially increase the nu value. This variation can be traced to the different electronic transition characteristics between the derivatives of [Mo(6)O(19)](2-) and [Mo(6)O(19)](2-). For our studied systems, increasing the conjugation length and diagonal substituted are efficient ways to enhance the third-order polarizability. Thus, the organoimide derivatives of hexamolybdates may comprise a new promising class of nonlinear optical materials from the standpoint of large values, small dispersion behavior, and high transparency.

Abstract
(17)O NMR spectroscopy of oxo ligand of oxo metalloporphyrin can be considered as an excellent means to derive information about structure, electronic state, and reactivity of the metal bound oxo ligand. To show the utility of (17)O NMR spectroscopy of oxo ligand of oxo metalloporphyrin, (17)O NMR spectra of oxo ligands of dioxo ruthenium(VI), oxo chromium(IV), and oxo titanium(IV) porphyrins are measured. For all oxo metalloporphyrins, well-resolved (17)O NMR signals are detected in far high frequency region. The (17)O NMR signal of the metal bound oxo ligand shifts high frequency in order of Ru(VI)<Ti(IV)<Cr(IV), thus the (17)O NMR chemical shift does not directly correlate with the oxo-transfer reactivity, Ti(IV)<Cr(IV)<Ru(VI). On the other hand, the (17)O NMR shift of oxo ligand correlates with the bond strength of metal-oxo bond. This suggests that the (17)O NMR signal of metal bound oxo ligand is a sensitive probe to study the nature of metal-oxo bond in oxo metalloporphyrin. The effect of the electron-withdrawing meso-substituent on the (17)O NMR shift of the oxo ligand is also investigated. With increase in the electron-withdrawing effect of the meso-substituent, the (17)O NMR signal of the oxo ligand of oxo chromium(IV) porphyrin shifts high frequency while that of dioxo ruthenium(VI) porphyrin hardly change resonance position. The changes in metal-oxo bonds induced by the electron-withdrawing meso-substituent are discussed on the basis of the (17)O NMR shifts, the strengths of the metal-oxo bonds, and the oxo-transfer reaction rates.

Abstract
A kinetically controlled trans bifunctionalized organoimido derivative of hexamolybdate, (n-Bu(4)N)(2){trans-[Mo(6)O(17)(NAr)(2)]} (Ar = 2,6-dimethylphenyl) 1, in which the two 2,6-dimethylphenylimido groups are bonded to hexamolybdate at the trans positions, has been successfully synthesized in ca. 60% yield under mild reaction conditions. Its trans structure has been confirmed by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study. In the crystals, cluster anions of 1 self-assemble into a 3D netlike structure via two different kinds of C-H...O hydrogen bondings, in which 1D supramolecular rectangular channels containing tetrabutylammonium cations form along the a axis. Compound 1 has also been characterized by (1)H NMR, IR, and UV-vis spectroscopic studies. UV-vis-near-IR reflectance spectroscopy measurements reveal the compound's nature of semiconductivity with an optical energy gap of 2.55 eV.

Abstract
The first chiral molecular hybrids based on covalently linked polyoxometalate clusters and enantiopure 1,1'-binaphthyl units have been prepared. Their structures have been confirmed by (1)H NMR, FTIR, and ESI-MS measurements. Such hybrids show moderate chiroptical behavior in solutions, and Cotton effects are observed up to 450 nm, indicating chiral extension from the binaphthyl core to the cluster-containing pi-conjugated arms.

Abstract
A phenanthroline ligand has been covalently modified at the 2 and 9 positions by an aminophenylhexamolybdate substituent. The 1H NMR spectrum indicated a strong electron-withdrawing effect of the hexamolybdate (Mo6O19(2-)) moiety on the phenanthroline ligand. UV-vis and cyclic voltammetry showed extended conjugation of the hybrid phenanthroline-polyoxometalate compound and the possibility of easy oxidation of the extended phenanathroline ligand. Further EPR experiments provided strong evidence for an intramolecular charge-transfer process with the formation of a phenanthroline cation radical and a reduced hexamolybdate.

Abstract
A stable monolayer of the inorganic-organic hybrid polyoxometalate (Bu4N)2Mo6O19, denoted as Mo6O19, was formed on a sodium-3-mercapto-1-propanesulfonate (MPPS)-covered gold electrode surface, interlaced with an anionic poly(dimethyldiallylammonium chloride) (PDDA) binding layer based on the electrostatic self-assembled (ESA) technique. Electrochemical characterization of the Mo6O19 self-assembled thin films on the solid surface by cyclic voltammetry and AC impedance spectroscopy revealed a stable and sensitive electrocatalytic response to the reduction of iodate. Iodate was determined amperometrically through a flow injection cell at the modified electrode in the concentration range of 1.0 x 10(-6) to 1.0 x 10(-1) M with a detection limit of 8 x 10(-8) M (signal-to-noise ratio = 3). Performance was improved to meet practical needs compared with previously reported analogues.

Abstract
Two new charge-transfer hybrids with one or two ferrocenyl units covalently attached to a hexamolybdate cluster through an extended pi-conjugated bridge have been prepared using Pd-catalyzed coupling reactions on monoiodo- or diiodo-functionalized cluster substrates in over 60% yields. These hybrids have been characterized by (1)H NMR, FTIR, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and X-ray diffraction. The electronic spectra of these hybrids show a broad absorption tail extending beyond 550 nm, indicating the existence of charge-transfer transition from the ferrocenyl donor to the cluster acceptor. The observation of the clear charge-transfer transition indicates the contribution of charge-transfer resonance to the ground state in both 2a and 2b even though the donor-acceptor separation distance of 11.29 A is rather long, signaling a through-bond charge-transfer nature made possible by the organic pi-conjugated bridge. Cyclic voltammetry studies reveal a one-electron oxidation wave and a one-electron reduction wave for the hybrid with one ferrocenyl unit. For the one with two ferrocenyl units, a lower reduction potential and a two-electron oxidation wave are observed, indicating negligible electronic interactions between the two ferrocenyl units.

Abstract
A complete series down group 6 of the formula M(NBu(t))(2)(dpma) has been synthesized, where dpma is N,N-di(pyrrolyl-alpha-methyl)-N-methylamine. A fourth complex, Mo(NAr)(2)(dpma) (4), was also prepared, where Ar is 2,6-diisopropylphenyl. All four of these complexes display geometries in the solid state best described as square pyramidal with one imido ligand occupying the axial position and the other an equatorial site. In all cases, the axial imido ligand has a significantly smaller M-N(imido)-C bond angle with respect to the equatorial multiple-bond substituent. From the (1)H, (13)C, and (14)N NMR spectra, the axial (bent) imido appears to be more electron-rich than the equatorial and linear imido, with the differences becoming less pronounced down the column. The angular deformation energies for the axial imido ligands were studied by DFT in order to discern if and to what extent imido bond angles were important energetically. The electronic energies associated with straightening the axial imido ligand, while holding the remainder of the molecule at the ground-state geometry, for the Cr, Mo, and W derivatives were calculated as 4.5, 2.7, and 2.0 kcal/mol, respectively. A straight-line plot is found for deformation energies versus estimated electronegativity of the group 6 metals in the +6 oxidation state. The study suggests that the electronic differences between metal imido ligands of different angles are quite small; however, the effects may be more pronounced for metal centers with higher electronegativity, e.g. Cr(VI) with electron-withdrawing ligands.
