Abstract
α-Aminophosphonic acids are phosphorus analogues of α-amino acids. Compounds of this type find numerous applications in medicine and crop protection due to their unique biological activities. A crucial factor in these activities is the configuration of the stereoisomers. Only a few methods of stereoselective transformation of α-amino acids into their phosphorus analogues are known so far and all of them are based on asymmetric induction, thus involving the use of a chiral substrate. In contrast, we have focused our efforts on the development of an effective method for this type of transformation using a racemic mixture of starting N-protected α-amino acids and a chiral catalyst. Herein, a simple and efficient stereoselective organocatalytic α-amidoalkylation of dimethyl phosphite by 1-(N-acylamino)alkyltriphenylphosphonium salts to enantiomerically enriched α-aminophosphonates is reported. Using 5 mol% of chiral quinine- or hydroquinine-derived quaternary ammonium salts provides final products in very good yields up to 98% and with up to 92% ee. The starting phosphonium salts were easily obtained from α-amino acid derivatives by decarboxylative methoxylation and subsequent substitution with triphenylphosphonium tetrafluoroborate. The appropriate self-disproportionation of enantiomers (SDE) test for selected α-aminophosphonate derivatives via achiral flash chromatography was performed to confirm the reliability of the enantioselectivity results that were obtained.

The Potential of a Nanostructured Titanium Oxide Layer with Self-Assembled Monolayers for Biomedical Applications: Surface Properties and Biomechanical Behaviors. APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL 2020. Abstract
This study investigated the surface properties and biomechanical behaviors of a nanostructured titanium oxide (TiO) layer with different self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of phosphonate on the surface of microscope slides. The surface properties of SAMs were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, and contact angle goniometry. Biomechanical behaviors were evaluated using nanoindentation with a diamond Berkovich indenter. Analytical results indicated that the homogenous nanostructured TiO surface was formed on the substrate surface after the plasma oxidation treatment. As the TiO surface was immersed with 11-phosphonoundecanoic acid solution (PUA-SAM/TiO), the formation of a uniform SAM can be observed on the sample surface. Moreover, the binding energy of O 1s demonstrated the presence of the bisphosphonate monolayer on the SAMs-coated samples. It was also found that the PUA-SAM/TiO sample not only possessed a higher wettability performance, but also exhibited low surface contact stiffness. A SAM surface with a high wettability and low contact stiffness could potentially promote biocompatibility and prevent the formation of a stress shielding effect. Therefore, the self-assembled technology is a promising approach that can be applied to the surface modification of biomedical implants for facilitating bone healing and osseointegration.

Abstract
Phosphazine and phosphazide derivatives are described herein as a new class of selective and potent acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors and β-amyloid aggregation inhibitors. Phosphazines (5-7) were synthesized smoothly via a redox-condensation reaction of 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane with different amines derivatives in the presence of dialkyl azodicarboxylate (Staudinger reaction) while phosphazides (8) via electrophilic attack of azido derivatives. Structures of the synthesized compounds were justified on the basis of compatible elementary and spectroscopic analyses. All the compounds were evaluated for their acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity. The most three potent compounds (5b-c and 8b) showing AChE IC50 values (29.85-34.96 nM) comparable to that of donepezil (34.42 nM) were subjected to further investigation by testing their butyrylcholinesterase, MMP-2 and self-induced Aβ aggregation inhibition activity. Especially, the coumarin phosphazide derivative (8b) presented the best AChE inhibition selectivity index (IC50 = 34.96 nM, AChE/BuChE; 3.81) together with good inhibition ability against MMP-2 (IC50 = 441.33 nM) and self-induced Aβ1-42 aggregation (IC50 = 337.77 nM). In addition, the inhibition of metal-induced Aβ aggregation by 8b was confirmed by thioflavine T fluorescence. The most potent effect of 8b was observed on the Zn2+-induced Aβ42 aggregation. Kinetic study of compound 8b suggested it to be a competitive AChE inhibitor. Also, it specifically chelates metal and is predicted to be permeable to BBB. It also possesses low toxicity on SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells with a safety index of 15.37. In addition, it was demonstrated that compound 8b can improve the cognitive impairment of scopolamine-induced model in mice with % alternations and transfer latency time comparable to that of donepezil. Also, a docking study was carried out and it was in accordance with the in vitro results. These promising in vitro and in vivo findings highlight compound 8b as a possible drug candidate in searching for new multifunctional AD drugs.

Abstract
New aziridine 2-phosphonic acids were prepared by monohydrolysis of the aziridine 2-phosphonates that were obtained by the modified Gabriel-Cromwell reaction of vinyl phosphonate or α-tosylvinyl phosphonate with a primary amine or a chiral amine. The cellular cytotoxicity of these compounds was tested against the HCT-116 colorectal cancer cell lines and the CCD-18Co normal colon fibroblast lines using the MTT assay. Three of the synthesized phosphonic acid derivatives 2e (ethyl hydrogen {(2S)-1-[(1S)-1-(naphthalen-2-yl)ethyl]aziridin-2-yl}phosphonate), 2h (ethyl hydrogen (1-benzylaziridin-2-yl)phosphonate), and 2i (ethyl hydrogen (1-cyclohexylaziridin-2-yl)phosphonate) showed higher cytotoxicity than the reference cancer treatment agent etoposide. Cell death was through a robust induction of apoptosis even more effectively than etoposide, a well-known apoptosis inducing agent.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Alzheimer's disease (AD) is progressive and irreversible neurodegenerative disorder. Current pharmacotherapy is not able to stop progression of the disease and can only improve cognitive functions. Therefore, new drugs are being sought that will slow down the development of the disease. OBJECTIVE Novel phosphorus and thiophosphorus tacrine derivatives 7-14 were designed, synthesized and their biological activity and molecular modeling was investigated as a new potential anti- Alzheimer's disease (AD) agents. METHODS 9-Chlorotacrine was treated with propane-1,3-diamine in the presence of sodium iodide to yield N1-(1,2,3,4-tetrahydroacridin-9-yl)propane-1,3-diamine 6. Finally, it was treated with corresponding acid ester or thioester to give phosphorus or thiophosphorus tacrine derivative 7-14. All of the obtained final structures were characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, 31P NMR and MS. RESULTS The results of the docking studies showed that the newly designed phosphorus and thiophosphorus tacrine analogs, theoretically possess AChE and BChE-binding ability. Kinetic study showed that 8 and 12 in the series proved to be more potent electric eel AChE (eeAChE) and human (hAChE) inhibitors than tacrine, where 8 inhibited eeAChE three times more than the referenced drug. The highest BChE inhibition revealed 11 and 13. The most active compounds against eeAChE, hAChE and BChE showed mixed type of inhibition. CONCLUSION All new synthesized compound exhibited lower toxicity against neuroblastoma.cell line (SH-SY5Y) in comparison with tacrine. Two analogues in the series, 7 and 9, demonstrated lack of cytotoxicity against hepatocellular cells (hepG2).

Abstract
The dandelion-shaped nanostructure of an organotin complex with formula Sn(CH3)2Cl2}NC5H4C(O)NHP(O)[NHC6H11]2}2 (C1) was synthesized by means of a sonochemical method. Nano-structures were characterized by elemental analysis, NMR, SEM-EDS, XRD, UV-Vis, and FT-IR spectroscopy. The thermal stability of the complex C1 has been studied by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and compared to the bulk form (C2). Both the morphology and the size of the ultrasound-assisted synthesized organotin complex have been investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) by changing such parameters as the concentration of initial reactants and the sonication frequency. Two different forms of the organotin complex (C1, C2) and the corresponding ligand (L) were evaluated by a modified Ellman's method on acetyl- and butyrylcholinesterase enzymes. Nanodendalion C1 and ligand L showed the best activity against AChE and BChE, respectively, with the IC50 values being 326.59 μg/ml and 426.68 μg/ml. Further, Lineweaver Burk plots indicated that these compounds are mixed inhibitors. The synthesized compounds and cholinesterase enzymes were simulated by molecular docking for more details concerning the conformation and the orientations of these compounds in the active site of the receptor.

Abstract
The phosphorus atom in hexamethyl phosphorus triamide 5 attacks the carbonyl function in
2-chloroquinoline-3-carbaldehyde 4a to give the bis-quinolinyl ethanone product 6. On the other hand,
quinoline ring-attack proceeds by the same phosphorus reagent upon reaction with 2-chloroquinoline-
3-aldoxime 4b yielding phosphonate 7. Meanwhile, the reaction of the tris-aminophosphine reagent 5
with 2-chloroquinoline- 3-(p-chlorophenyl)imine 4c affords the respective α-aminophosphonate 8.
Moreover, the attack by phosphine 5 on 2-chloroquinoline-3-imines 4d and 4e produces the respective
cyclic azophosphole derivatives 9a and 9b. [(2-chloroquinolin-3-yl)methylidene]propane dinitrile 4f
reacts with phosphine 5 to yield [(2-chloroquinolinen-3-yl) 2,2-dicyanoethyl]tetramethylphosphonic
diamide 10. Structural elucidations for the new products were based on compatible analytical and spectroscopic
data. Moreover, the structures assigned for compounds 7 and 9a were unambiguously confirmed
by X-ray crystallographic measurements. Biological evaluations indicated that compounds 4a,c
exhibit antibacterial potency against Gram-positive bacteria and 4a,c and 9a show activity against
Candida albicans strain.

Abstract
A facile and efficient approach to phosphoramidates was developed via amination of phosphoryl azides. A variety of phosphoramidates were obtained in one step with good to excellent yields under a mild reaction system. The process uses easily available amines as a N source and offers a new opportunity for P–N bond formation. A facile and efficient approach to phosphoramidates was developed via amination of phosphoryl azides.![]()

Abstract
Phosphorus-containing compounds are one of the most important classes of organic compounds, which have wide applications in organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, agricultural chemistry, and materials chemistry. In particular, organophosphorus compounds bearing a P(O)-C bond have attracted significant attention in recent decades due to their widespread biological and pharmacological activities. In this review, we will highlight the most important developments in the construction of P(O)-C bonds through decarboxylative C-P cross-coupling reactions. The literature has been surveyed from 2011 to May 2018.

Organophosphorus compounds containing P-C bonds are increasingly developed as flame retardant additives due to their excellent thermal and hydrolytic stability and ease of synthesis. The latest development (since 2010) in organophosphorus flame retardants containing P-C bonds summarized in this review. In this review, we have broadly classified such phosphorus compounds based on the carbon unit linked to the phosphorus atom i.e., could be a part of either an aliphatic or an aromatic unit. We have only considered those published literature where a P-C bond was created as a part of synthetic strategy to make either an intermediate or a final organophosphorus compound with an aim to use it as a flame retardant. General synthetic strategies to create P-C bonds are briefly discussed. Most popular synthetic strategies used for developing P-C containing phosphorus based flame retardants include Michael addition, Michaelis-Arbuzov, Friedels-Crafts and Grignard reactions. In general, most flame retardant derivatives discussed in this review have been prepared via a one- to two-step synthetic strategy with relatively high yields greater than 80%. Specific examples of P-C containing flame retardants synthesized via suitable synthetic strategy and their applications on various polymer systems are described in detail. Aliphatic phosphorus compounds being liquids or low melting solids are generally applied in polymers via coatings (cellulose) or are incorporated in the bulk of the polymers (epoxy, polyurethanes) during their polymerization as reactive or non-reactive additives. Substituents on the P atoms and the chemistry of the polymer matrix greatly influence the flame retardant behavior of these compounds (condensed phase vs. the gas phase). Recently, aromatic DOPO based phosphinate flame retardants have been developed with relatively higher thermal stabilities (>250 °C). Such compounds have potential as flame retardants for high temperature processable polymers such as polyesters and polyamides. A vast variety of P-C bond containing efficient flame retardants are being developed; however, further work in terms of their economical synthetic methods, detailed impact on mechanical properties and processability, long term durability and their toxicity and environmental impact is much needed for their potential commercial exploitations.

Abstract
Derivatives of methylenediphosphonic acid possess wide spectra of biological activities and are used in enzymology as research tools as well as in practical medicine. Carbonyl diphosphonic acid is a promising starting building block for synthesis of functionally substituted methylenediphosphonates. Investigation of the interaction of carbonyl diphosphonic acid with hydroxylamine clearly demonstrates that it is impossible to isolate oxime within the pH range 2–12, while only cyanophosphonic and phosphoric acids are the products of the fast proceeding Beckmann-like fragmentation. In the case of O-alkylhydroxylamines, corresponding alcohols are found in the reaction mixtures in addition to cyanophosphonic and phosphoric acids. Therefore, two residues of phosphonic acid being attached to a carbonyl group provide new properties to this carbonyl group, making its oximes very unstable. This principally differs carbonyl diphosphonic acid from structurally related phosphonoglyoxalic acid and other α-ketophosphonates.

Abstract
The reaction between benzyl amines, triethyl orthoformate, and diethyl phosphite affords either bisphosphonic (compound 1) or N-benzylaminobenzylphosphonic (compound 2) acid depending on the reaction conditions. The final output of the reaction can be manipulated by the choice of reaction conditions, particularly the molar ratio of substrates.

Abstract
The reaction of diethyl phosphite with triethyl orthoformate and a primary amine followed by hydrolysis is presented, and the reaction was suitable for the preparation of (aminomethylene)bisphosphonates. 3-Amino-1,2,4-triazole was chosen as an interesting substrate for this reaction because it possesses multiple groups that can serve as the amino component in the reaction—namely, the side-chain and triazole amines. This substrate readily forms 1,2,4-triazolyl-3-yl-aminomethylenebisphosphonic acid (compound 1) as a major product, along with N-ethylated bisphosphonates as side products. The in vitro antiproliferative effects of the synthesized aminomethylenebisphosphonic acids against J774E macrophages were determined. These compounds exhibit similar activity to zoledronic acid and higher activity than incadronic acid.

Abstract
Growing interest in the biological activity of aminobisphosphonates has stimulated the development of methods for their synthesis. Although several general procedures were previously elaborated to reach this goal, aminobisphosphonate chemistry is still developing quite substantially. Thus, innovative modifications of the existing commonly used reactions, as well as development of new procedures, are presented in this review, concentrating on recent achievements. Additionally, selected examples of aminobisphosphonate derivatization illustrate their usefulness for obtaining new diagnostic and therapeutic agents.
