Abstract
Anilines are some of the most used class of substrates for application in photoinduced electron transfer. N,N-Dialkyl-derivatives enable radical generation α to the N-atom by oxidation followed by deprotonation. This approach is however elusive to monosubstituted anilines owing to fast back-electron transfer (BET). Here we demonstrate that BET can be minimised by using photoredox catalysis in the presence of an exogenous alkylamine. This approach synergistically aids aniline SET oxidation and then accelerates the following deprotonation. In this way, the generation of α-anilinoalkyl radicals is now possible and these species can be used in a general sense to achieve divergent sp3 C-H functionalization.

Abstract
Carbazole/cyanobenzene photocatalysts promote the direct isotopic carboxylate exchange of C(sp3) acids with labeled CO2. Substrates that are not compatible with transition-metal-catalyzed degradation-reconstruction approaches or prone to thermally induced reversible decarboxylation undergo isotopic incorporation at room temperature in short reaction times. The radiolabeling of drug molecules and precursors with [11C]CO2 is demonstrated.

Abstract
Herein, we report the 1,2-dialkylation of simple feedstock acrylates for the synthesis of valuable tertiary carboxylic acids by merging Giese-type radical addition with an Ireland-Claisen rearrangement. Key to success is the utilization of the reductive radical-polar crossover concept under photocatalytic reaction conditions to force the [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement after alkyl radical addition to allyl acrylates. Using readily available alkyl boronic acids as radical progenitors, this redox-neutral, transition-metal-free protocol allows the mild formation of two C(sp3)-C(sp3) bonds, thus providing rapid access to complex tertiary carboxylic acids in a single step. Moreover, this strategy enables the efficient synthesis of highly attractive α,α-dialkylated γ-amino butyric acids (GABAs) when α-silyl amines are used as radical precursors - a structural motif that was still inaccessible in related transformations. Depending on the nature of the radical precursors and their inherent oxidation potentials, either a photoredox-induced radical chain or a solely photoredox mechanism is proposed to be operative.

Abstract
ConspectusThe use of photocatalysis in organic chemistry has encountered a surge of novel transformations since the start of the 21st century. The majority of these transformations are driven by the generation and subsequent reaction of radicals, owing to the intrinsic property of common photocatalysts to transfer single electrons from their excited state. While this is a powerful and elegant method to develop novel transformations, several research groups recently sought to further extend the toolbox of photocatalysis into the realm of polar ionic reactivity by the formation of cationic as well as anionic key reaction intermediates to furnish a desired product. Our group became especially interested in the photocatalytic formation of anionic carbon nucleophiles, as the overall transformation resembles classical organometallic reactions like Grignard, Barbier, and Reformatsky reactions, which are ubiquitous in organic synthesis with broad applications especially in the formation of valuable C-C bonds. Although these classical reactions are frequently applied, their use still bears certain disadvantages; one is the necessity of an (over)stoichiometric amount of a reducing metal. The reducing, low-valent, metal is solely applied to activate the starting material to form the organometallic carbanion synthon, while the final reaction product does generally not contain a metal species. Hence, a stoichiometric amount of metal salt is bound to be generated at the end of each reaction, diminishing the atom economy. The use of visible light as mild and traceless activation agent to drive chemical reactions can be a means to arrive at a more atom economic transformation, as a reducing metal source is avoided. Beyond this, the vast pool of photocatalytic activation methods offers the potential to employ easily available starting materials, as simple as unfunctionalized alkanes, to open novel and more facile retrosynthetic pathways. However, as mentioned above, photocatalysis is dominated by open-shell radical reactivity. With neutral radicals showing an intrinsically different reactivity than ionic species, novel strategies to form intermediates expressing a polar behavior need to be developed in order to achieve this goal.In the last couple of years, several methods toward this aim have been reported by our group and others. This Account aims to give an overview of the different existing strategies to photocatalytically form carbon centered anions or equivalents of those in order to form C-C bonds. As the main concept is to omit a stoichiometric reductant source (like a low-valent metal in classical organometallic reactions), only redox-neutral and reductant-free transformations were taken into closer consideration. We present selected examples of important strategies and try to illustrate the intentions and concepts behind the methods developed by our group and others.

Abstract
Quinoline is considered one of the most ubiquitous heterocycles due to its engaging biological activities and synthetic utility over organic transformations. Over the past few decades, numerous reports have been documented in the synthesis of quinolines. The classical methods including, Skraup, Friedlander, Doebner-von-Miller, Conrad-Limpach, Pfitzinger quinoline synthesis, and so forth, these are the well-known methods to construct principal quinoline scaffold with several advantages and limitations. Recently, radical insertion or catalyzed reactions have emerged as a powerful and efficient tool to construct heterocycles with high atom efficiency and step economy. In this concern, this minireview mainly focused on the developments of Quinoline synthesis via radical reactions. In addition, a brief description of the preparation procedure, reactivity, and mechanisms is also included, where as possible. Respectively, the synthesis of quinolines is classified and summarized based on its reactivity, so it will help the researchers to grab the information in this exploration area, as Quinolines are promising pharmacophores.

Abstract
Carbonyl propargylation has been established as a valuable tool in the realm of carbon-carbon bond forming reactions. The 1,3-enyne moiety has been recognized as an alternative pronucleophile in the above transformation through an ionic mechanism. Herein, we report for the first time, the radical carbonyl propargylation through dual chromium/photoredox catalysis. A library of valuable homopropargylic alcohols bearing all-carbon quaternary centers could be obtained by a catalytic radical three-component coupling of 1,3-enynes, aldehydes and suitable radical precursors (41 examples). This redox-neutral multi-component reaction occurs under very mild conditions and shows high functional group tolerance. Remarkably, bench-stable, non-toxic, and inexpensive CrCl3 could be employed as a chromium source. Preliminary mechanistic investigations suggest a radical-polar crossover mechanism, which offers a complementary and novel approach towards the preparation of valuable synthetic architectures from simple chemicals.

Abstract
We developed a chromium-catalyzed, photochemical, and linear-selective alkylation of aldehydes with alkylzirconium species generated in situ from a wide range of alkenes and Schwartz's reagent. Photochemical homolysis of the C-Zr bond afforded alkyl radicals, which were then trapped by a chromium complex catalyst to generate the alkylchromium(III) species for polar addition to aldehydes. The reaction proceeded with high functional group tolerance at ambient temperature under visible-light irradiation.

Abstract
A metal-free generation of carbanion nucleophiles is of prime importance in organic synthesis. Herein we report a photocatalytic approach to the Corey-Seebach reaction. The presented method operates under mild redox-neutral and base-free conditions giving the desired product with high functional group tolerance. The reaction is enabled by the combination of photo- and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) catalysis. This catalytic merger allows a C-H to carbanion activation by the abstraction of a hydrogen atom followed by radical reduction. The generated nucleophilic intermediate is then capable of adding to carbonyl electrophiles. The obtained dithiane can be easily converted to the valuable α-hydroxy carbonyl in a subsequent step. The proposed reaction mechanism is supported by emission quenching, radical-radical homocoupling and deuterium labeling studies as well as by calculated redox-potentials and bond strengths.

Abstract
The intermolecular reductive radical coupling of aldehydes with nonactivated alkenes, employing metal hydride atom transfer (MHAT) catalysis with a combination of FeII and FeIII salts, is described. This constitutes the first use of aldehydes as viable acceptor groups in MHAT reactions. The insights gained in this study led to the reexamination of the previously reported intramolecular version of the reaction, and the addition of FeII salts allowed the development of a more efficient second-generation approach.

Abstract
Remote difunctionalization of unactivated alkenes is challenging but a highly attractive tactic to install two functional groups across long distances. Reported herein is the first remote difunctionalization of alkenes with CO2 . This visible-light photoredox catalysis strategy provides a facile method to synthesize a series of carboxylic acids bearing valuable fluorine- or phosphorus-containing functional groups. Moreover, this versatile protocol shows mild reaction conditions, broad substrate scope, and good functional-group tolerance. Based on DFT calculations, a radical adds to an unactivated alkene to smoothly form a new carbon radical, followed by a 1,5-hydrogen atom-transfer process, the rate-limiting step, generating a more stable benzylic radical. The reduction of the benzylic radicals by an IrII species generates the corresponding benzylic carbanions as the key intermediates, which further undergo nucleophilic attack with CO2 to generate carboxylates.

Abstract
We report here a novel reductive radical-polar crossover reaction that is a reductive radical-initiated 1,2-C migration of 2-azido allyl alcohols enabled by an azidyl group. The reaction tolerates diverse migrating groups, such as alkyl, alkenyl, and aryl groups, allowing access to n+1 ring expansion of small to large rings. The possibility of directly using propargyl alcohols in one-pot is also described. Mechanistic studies indicated that an azidyl group is a good leaving group and provides a driving force for the 1,2-C migration.

Abstract
Catalytic reductive coupling of two electrophiles and one unsaturated bond represents an economic and efficient way to construct complex skeletons, which is dominated by transition-metal catalysis via two electron transfer. Herein, we report a strategy of visible-light photoredox-catalyzed successive single electron transfer, realizing dearomative arylcarboxylation of indoles with CO2. This strategy avoids common side reactions in transition-metal catalysis, including ipso-carboxylation of aryl halides and β-hydride elimination. This visible-light photoredox catalysis shows high chemoselectivity, low loading of photocatalyst, mild reaction conditions (room temperature, 1 atm) and good functional group tolerance, providing great potential for the synthesis of valuable but difficultly accessible indoline-3-carboxylic acids. Mechanistic studies indicate that the benzylic radicals and anions might be generated as the key intermediates, thus providing a direction for reductive couplings with other electrophiles, including D2O and aldehyde. Catalytic reductive coupling of two electrophiles and one C = C bond is usually performed by two electron transfer metal catalysis. Herein, the authors show a visible light photoredox-catalyzed successive single electron transfer leading to dearomative arylcarboxylation of indoles with CO2 and generating indoline-3-carboxylic acids.

Abstract
A double functionalization of vicinal sp3 C-H bonds has been developed, wherein a β amine and γ iodide are incorporated onto an aliphatic alcohol in a single operation. This approach is enabled by an imidate radical chaperone, which selectively affords a transient β alkene that is amino-iodinated in situ. Overall, the radical-polar-crossover cascade entails the following key steps: (i) β C-H iodination via 1,5-hydrogen atom transfer (HAT), (ii) desaturation via I2 complexation, and (iii) vicinal amino-iodination of an in situ generated allyl imidate. The synthetic utility of this double C-H functionalization is illustrated by conversion of aliphatic alcohols to a diverse collection of α,β,γ substituted products bearing heteroatoms on three adjacent carbons. The radical-polar crossover mechanism is supported by various experimental probes, including isotopic labeling, intermediate validation, and kinetic studies.

Abstract
Radical/Polar Crossover (RPC) chemistry is a rapidly growing subset of photoredox catalysis that is characterized by transformations featuring both radical and ionic modes of reactivity. Net-neutral RPC is particularly interesting in that both the single-electron oxidation and reduction steps occur through interaction with the photocatalyst, thus precluding the need for exogenous oxidants or reductants. As such, these transformations facilitate rapid incorporation of molecular complexity while maintaining mild reaction conditions. This review covers recent advances in photoredox-mediated net-neutral RPC synthetic methods, with a particular emphasis on C-C bond-forming reactions.

Abstract
Herein, we report the synthesis of protected 1,2-amino alcohols starting from carbonyl compounds and α-silyl amines. The reaction is enabled by a Cr/photoredox dual catalytic system that allows the in situ generation of α-amino carbanion equivalents which act as nucleophiles. The unique nature of this reaction was demonstrated through the aminoalkylation of ketones and an acyl silane, classes of electrophiles that were previously unreactive toward addition of alkyl-Cr reagents. Overall, this reaction broadens the scope of Cr-mediated carbonyl alkylations and discloses an underexplored retrosynthetic strategy for the synthesis of 1,2-amino alcohols.

Abstract
We report a redox-neutral method for the generation of carbanions from benzylic C-H bonds in a photocatalytic Grignard-type reaction. The combination of photo- and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) catalysis enables the abstraction of a benzylic hydrogen atom, generating a radical intermediate. This radical is reduced in situ by the organic photocatalyst to a carbanion, which is able to react with electrophiles such as aldehydes or ketones, yielding homobenzylic secondary and tertiary alcohols.
