Abstract
Fibrous membranes based on natural polymers obtained by the electrospinning technique are a great choice for wound dressings. In order to promote an efficient wound repair, and to avoid antibiotics, antibacterial plant extracts can be incorporated. In the present work, the new electrospun nanofibre membranes based on monobasic phosphate curdlan (PCurd) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were obtained for the first time. To establish the adequate mixing ratio for electrospinning, the behaviour of the PCurd and PVA mixture was studied by viscometry and rheology. In order to confer antimicrobial activity with the nanofibre membrane, clove essential oil (CEO) was incorporated into the electrospun solution. Well-defined and drop-free nanofibres with a diameter between 157 nm and 110 nm were obtained. The presence of CEO in the obtained nanofibres was confirmed by ATR–FTIR spectroscopy, by the phenolic and flavonoid contents, and by the antioxidant activity of the membranes. In physiological conditions, CEO was released from the membrane after 24 h. The in vivo antimicrobial tests showed a good inhibitory activity against E. coli and higher activity against S. aureus. Furthermore, the viability cell test showed the lack of cytotoxicity of the nanofibre membrane with and without CEO, confirming its potential use in wound treatment.

Abstract
In the present study, clove essential oil (CEO) Pickering emulsions were stabilized by octadecylamine-modified carboxymethyl curdlan (CMCD-ODA) at different pH values. The droplet size and negatively charged zeta potential of the CMCD-ODA emulsions decreased as the pH increased from 3.0 to 11.0. Rheology results indicated that the CMCD-ODA polymer/emulsion prepared at pH 5.0 showed higher apparent viscosity and viscoelasticity than other pH conditions, which might prevent droplets from flocculating. The Pickering emulsions obtained at pH 5.0 were spherical droplets with a uniform size distribution and a mean diameter of 9.54 μm, and they exhibited excellent stability during 28 days of storage. The morphological structures of the emulsions investigated by confocal laser scanning microscopy and scanning electron microscopy indicated that the CMCD-ODA Pickering emulsion obtained at pH 5.0 was stabilized by loading amphiphilic CMCD-ODA polymer around the spherical oil droplets and forming a weak gel network structure. The CEO-loaded CMCD-ODA emulsions had higher antioxidant capacity than free CEO after 28 days of storage at pH 5.0. Given the good emulsion stability, antioxidant activity, and great antibacterial effect, the CEO-loaded carboxymethyl curdlan Pickering emulsion has promising applications in food, cosmetic, and biomedicine industries.

Abstract
This study presents the encapsulation of spearmint oil (SMO) in chitosan microstructures prepared through the emulsion formation method. The SMO although is medicinally significant yet finds limited applications in medical and functional textiles because of its less stability and high volatility under ambient conditions. Nevertheless, its encapsulation in chitosan may enhance its stability and applicability for the said purpose. The SMO encapsulating chitosan microstructures were characterized using different analytical techniques and applied on cotton fabric through a green crosslinking of citric acid. The treated fabric revealed successful adhesion of microcapsules onto its surface confirmed via SEM and FTIR analyses. There observed a slight decrease in tensile strength of treated fabric; that, however, improved crease recovery behavior, and good antibacterial activity in response to broad-spectrum bacterial strains by reducing their 99% population; whereas, the stiffness of such fabric exhibited somehow increasing trend. Hence value-added multifunctional textiles produced, herein, may provide both surface and antibacterial activity for potential medical and healthcare applications without compromising their comfort properties.

Abstract
Productivity enhancement approaches, such as elicitation can overcome the limitations of low metabolite(s) yield in in vitro plant cell culture platforms. Application of biotic/abiotic elicitors triggers molecular responses that lead to a concomitant enhancement in the production of metabolites. Nanoparticles have been tested as alternatives to commonly studied biotic/abiotic elicitors. However, most nanoparticles explored are of metallic origin, which raises concerns about their cytotoxicity, disposal post-elicitation, and may limit downstream applications of metabolites. Here, we report the synthesis and application of biopolymeric methyl jasmonate-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (MJ-CNPs) and empty CNPs (size <100 nm) as nano-elicitors, which were simple to synthesize, cost-effective and safe. Enzymatic and metabolic investigations revealed that MJ-CNPs and empty CNPs improve and prolong phenylalanine ammonia-lyase enzyme activity and production of phenolics and flavonoids. The data provides the first evidence of MJ-CNPs and empty CNPs as nano-elicitors that prolong the production of metabolites in plant cell suspension cultures.

Abstract
Nanoencapsulation has appeared as an alternative approach to protect the bioactive constituents of essential oils (EOs) and to improve their properties. In this study, Cynometra cauliflora essential oils (CCEOs) were nanoencapsulated in chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs) using an emulsion-ionic gelation technique. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images illustrated a well dispersion and spherical shape of C. cauliflora EOs-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (CCEOs-CSNPs) with an average size of less than 100 nm. In addition to that, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses revealed the success of CCEOs nanoencapsulation. The encapsulation efficiency (EE) was in the range of 38.83% to 44.16% while the loading capacity (LC) reached 32.55% to 33.73%. The antioxidant activity (IC50) of CCEOs-CSNPs was ranged from 21.65 to 259.13 μg/mL when assessed using DPPH radical scavenging assay. CCEOs-CSNPs showed an appreciable antimicrobial effects on diabetic wound microorganisms. Notably, cytotoxic effects against human breast cancer MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells recorded IC50 of 3.72-17.81 μg/mL and 16.24-17.65 μg/mL, respectively, after 72 h treatment. Interestingly, no cytotoxicity against human breast normal MCF-10A cells was observed. Thus, nanoencapsulation using CSNPs could improve the properties of CCEOs in biomedical related applications.

Abstract
The present study aimed to co-encapsulate binary synergistic formulation of Pimpinella anisum and Coriandrum sativum (PC) essential oils (0.75:0.25) into chitosan nanoemulsion (Nm-PC) with effective inhibition against fungal proliferation, aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) secretion, and lipid peroxidation in stored rice. Physico-chemical characterization of Nm-PC by SEM, FTIR, and XRD confirmed successful encompassment of PC inside the chitosan nanomatrix with efficient interaction by functional groups and reduction in crystallinity. Nm-PC showed superior antifungal, antiaflatoxigenic, and antioxidant activities over unencapsulated PC. Reduction in ergosterol biosynthesis and enhanced leakage of Ca2+, K+, Mg2+ ions and 260, 280 nm absorbing materials by Nm-PC fumigation confirmed irreversible damage of plasma membrane in toxigenic Aspergillus flavus cells. Significant diminution of methylglyoxal in A. flavus cells by Nm-PC fumigation illustrated biochemical mechanism for antiaflatoxigenic activity, suggesting future exploitation for development of aflatoxin resistant rice varieties through green transgenic technology. In silico findings indicated specific stereo-spatial interaction of anethole and linalool with Nor-1 protein, validating molecular mechanism for AFB1 inhibition. In addition, in situ investigation revealed effective protection of stored rice against fungal occurrence, AFB1 biosynthesis, and lipid peroxidation without affecting organoleptic attributes. Moreover, mammalian non-toxicity of chitosan entrapped PC synergistic nanoformulation could provide exciting potential for application as eco-smart safe nano-green food preservative.

Abstract
Folic acid is a synthetic form of folate widely used for food fortification. However, its bioavailability is limited due to its inherent instability at several conditions. Therefore, a suitable encapsulation system is highly required. In the present study, the fabrication condition for folic acid-loaded chitosan nanoparticle (FA-Chi-NP) was optimized and then subjected to characterization. The optimized formulation had the particle size, zeta potential, and encapsulation efficiency of 180 nm, +52 mV, and 90%, respectively. In vitro release profile showed a controlled release of folic acid from the nanoparticles. Treatment of Caco-2 cells with the formulation showed no adverse effects based on MTT and LDH assays, and also, the cellular uptake was significantly higher after 2 h compared to free folic acid. Further, the oral administration of rats with FA-Chi-NPs (1 mg/kg BW) increased the plasma level of both folic acid (3.2-fold) and its metabolites such as tetrahydrofolate (2.3-fold) and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (1.6-fold) significantly compared to free folic acid. In a bio-distribution study, duodenum and jejunum were found to be the primary sites for absorption. These findings suggest that chitosan may be a promising carrier for the delivery of folic acid and, therefore, could be exploited for various food applications.

Abstract
Chitosan is a multifunctional biopolymer that is widely used in the food and medical fields because of its good antibacterial, antioxidant, and enzyme inhibiting activity and its degradability. The biological activity of chitosan as a new food preservation material has gradually become a hot research topic. This paper reviews recent research on the bioactive mechanism of chitosan and introduces strategies for modifying and applying chitosan for food preservation and different preservation techniques to explore the potential application value of active chitosan-based food packaging. Finally, issues and perspectives on the role of chitosan in enhancing the freshness of food products are presented to provide a theoretical basis and scientific reference for subsequent research.

Emulsions containing shrimp oil (SO) at varying amounts were prepared in the presence of red kidney bean protein isolate (KBPI) and κ-carrageenan (KC) at a ratio of 1:0.1 (w/w). The emulsions were subjected to ultrasonication and high-pressure microfluidization to assist the encapsulation process. For each sample, ultrasonication was carried out for 15 min in continuous mode at 80% amplitude, whereas high-pressure microfluidization was operated at 7000 psi for 10 min. Ultrasonicated and microfluidized emulsions were finally spray-dried to prepare KBPI-KC-SO microcapsules. Moderate to high encapsulation efficiency (EE) ranging from 43.99 to 89.25% of SO in KPBI-KC-SO microcapsules was obtained and the microcapsules had good flowability. Particle size, PDI and zeta potential of KBPI-KC-SO microcapsules were 2.58–6.41 µm, 0.32–0.40 and −35.95–−58.77 mV, respectively. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) images visually demonstrated that the wall material/SO ratio and the emulsification method (ultrasonication vs microfluidization) had an impact on the size, shape and surface of the KBPI-KC-SO microcapsules. Encapsulation of SO in microcapsules was validated empirically using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis. Encapsulation of SO in KBPI-KC microcapsules imparted superior protection against oxidative deterioration of SO as witnessed by the higher retention of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and astaxanthin when compared to unencapsulated SO during extended storage at room temperature.

Abstract
To solve the problems of low bioavailability and unstable properties of Cinnamomum cassia Essential oil (CCEO), encapsulation technology was introduced as an effective means to improve its shortcomings. In this study, Cinnamomum cassia Essential oil nano-emulsion (CCEO-NE) was successfully synthesized by the oil-in-water method and characterized by standard analytical methods, including dynamic light scattering (DLS), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results show that the synthesized CCEO is spherical, smooth in surface, and uniform in shape, with an average particle size of 221.8 ± 1.95 nm, which is amorphous. In this experiment, by simulating the digestion of CCEO-NE in the gastrointestinal tract, it was found that CCEO-NE was undigested in the oral cavity, mainly in the stomach, followed by the small intestine. By understanding the digestion of CCEO-NE, we can improve the potential of CCEO bioavailability in food and drug applications. In addition, through the study of ABTS and DPPH free radicals by CCEO and CCEO-NE, it was found that the antioxidant activity of CCEO-NE was more potent than that of CCEO. When the concentration of CCEO-NE and CCEO is 400 μg/mL, the DPPH free radical scavenging rate is 92.03 ± 0.548% and 80.46 ± 5.811%, respectively. In comparison, ABTS free radical scavenging rate is 90.35 ± 0.480% and 98.44 ± 0.170% when the concentration of CCEO- NE, and CCEO is 75 μg/mL, respectively. The antibacterial test shows that CCEO-NE can inhibit both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Among them, CCEO-NE has a stronger antibacterial ability than CCEO, and the maximum inhibition zone diameter of CCEO can reach 15 mm, while that of CCEO-NE can reach 18 mm. Meanwhile, SEM and TEM showed that CCEO-NE treatment destroyed the ultrastructure of bacteria. Generally speaking, we know the situation of CCEO in the gastrointestinal tract. CCEO-NE has more potent antioxidant and antibacterial ability than CCEO. Our research results show that whey protein is an effective packaging strategy that can improve the effectiveness, stability, and even bioavailability of CCEO in various applications, including food and health care industries.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Microencapsulation is a technique to improve stability, bioavailability, and controlled release of active ingredients at a target site. This experiment aimed to investigate the effects of microencapsulated basil oil (MBO) on growth performance, apparent ileal digestibility (AID), jejunal histomorphology, bacterial population as well as antioxidant capacity of broiler chickens in a tropical climate. METHODS A total of 288 one-day-old female broilers (Ross 308) were randomly allocated into 4 groups (6 replicates of 12 birds), based on a completely randomized design. Dietary treatments were as follows: i) basal diet (NC), ii) basal diet with avilamycin at 10 ppm (PC), iii) basal diet with free basil oil (FBO) at 500 ppm, and iv) basal diet with MBO at 500 ppm, respectively. RESULTS Dietary supplementation of MBO improved average daily gain, and feed conversion ratio of broilers throughout the 42-d trial period (p<0.05), whereas MBO did not affect average daily feed intake compared with NC group. The broilers fed MBO diet exhibited a greater AID of crude protein and gross energy compared with those in other groups (p<0.05). Lactobacillus spp. and Escherichia coli populations were not affected by feeding dietary treatments. Both FBO and MBO had positive effects on jejunal villus height (VH), villus height to crypt depth ratio (VH:CD) and villus surface area of broilers compared to NC and PC groups (p<0.05). Superoxide dismutase level in the duodenal mucosa of MBO group was significantly increased (p<0.01), whereas malondialdehyde level was significantly decreased (p<0.01). CONCLUSION Microencapsulation could be considered as a promising driver of the basil oil efficiency, consequently MBO at 500 ppm could be potentially used as a feed additive for improvement of intestinal integrity and nutrient utilization, leading to better performance of broiler chickens.

Abstract
The most significant topic currently under the moonlight is Nanobiotechnology and engineered nanomaterials. The novel characteristics displayed by engineered Nanomaterials, especially carbon-based nanomaterials, have spurred interest in its potential application in the food industry. It has provided opportunities for finding solutions to the long-standing challenges in the food industry to assess food safety, maintain food quality, extend the shelf life of produce, and efficiently deliver nutrients. Nanomaterials can be incorporated in food sensors facilitating efficient monitoring of crop maturity and detecting biological and chemical contaminants. When integrated into food packages, nanomaterials could aid in assessing the freshness and improving the quality of packaged foods. In addition, more efficient delivery of nutrients could be possible in foods fortified using nano compounds. The initial section of this review gives an overview of the broad application of nanotechnology in the food industry and carbon-based nanomaterials. The latter part focuses on nanotechnology in biosensors for food safety and quality monitoring.

Abstract
Essential oils (EOs) contain a complex mixture of volatile and non-volatile molecules with diverse biological activities, including flavoring, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and nutraceutical properties. As a result, EOs have numerous potential applications in the agriculture, food, and pharmaceutical industries. However, their hydrophobicity, chemical instability, and volatility pose a challenge for many of their applications. These challenges can often be overcome by encapsulation EOs in colloidal delivery systems. Over the last decade or so, nanoencapsulation and microencapsulation technologies have been widely explored for their potential to improve the handling, dispersibility, and stability of hydrophobic substances, as well as to control their release profiles (e.g., targeted, triggered, sustained, or burst release). These technologies include emulsification, coacervation, precipitation, spray-drying, spray-cooling, freeze-drying, fluidized bed coating, and extrusion. This article reviews some of the most important developments in EOs encapsulation, the physicochemical mechanisms underlying the behavior of encapsulated EOs, current challenges, and potential applications in the food and biomedical sciences. This review has found that nanoencapsulation has countless of potential advantages for the utilization of EOs in the food industry and can improve their water-dispersibility, food matrix compatibility, chemical stability, volatility, and bioactivity.

Abstract
The present investigation aimed to synthesize Cymbopogon nardus essential oil impregnated chitosan nanoemulsion (Ne-CNEO) and its practical efficacy as novel green delivery system for protection of Syzygium cumini seeds against broad range storage fungi, aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) secretion and lipid peroxidation. Chemical characterization of CNEO revealed citral (62.73%) as major component. Successful impregnation of CNEO inside chitosan nanoemulsion was confirmed through SEM, AFM and FTIR analyses. In vitro release study showed biphasic release profile with initial burst followed by sustained release of CNEO from chitosan nanomatrix. Ne-CNEO exhibited enhancement in in vitro antifungal, antiaflatoxigenic (0.16 μL/mL) and antioxidant activity over CNEO. The antifungal and antiaflatoxigenic mechanism of action of Ne-CNEO was associated with inhibition of ergosterol biosynthesis, increased leakage of cellular contents, and impairment in cellular methylglyoxal biosynthesis. In silico modeling validated interaction of citral with Ver-1 and Omt-A proteins, confirming the molecular action for inhibition of AFB1 production. In situ investigation suggested remarkable protection of S. cumini seeds against fungal inhabitation, AFB1 production and lipid peroxidation without affecting organoleptic attributes. Furthermore, higher mammalian non-toxicity strengthens the application of Ne-CNEO as safe nano-green and smart preservative in place of adversely affecting synthetic preservatives in emerging food, agriculture and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
Biodegradable particles were developed using poly-ε-caprolactone and gelatin carriers containing different concentrations of Allium sativum essential oil (EO) (360 µg/mL, 420 µg/mL, and 460 µg/mL). Atomic force microscopy was useful to evaluate the particles' surface based on morphological parameters. The particles' size varied from 150 nm to 300 nm. The diameter was related to the increase of the particles' height as a function of the EO concentration, influencing the roughness of the surface core values (from 20 to 30 nm) and surface irregularity. The spatial parameters Str (texture aspect ratio) and Std (texture direction) revealed low spatial frequency components. The hybrid parameters Sdq (root mean square gradient) and Sdr (interfacial area ratio) also increased as a function of the EO concentration, revealing fewer flat particles. On the other hand, the functional parameters (inverse areal material ratio and peak extreme height) suggested differences in surface irregularities. Higher concentrations of EO resulted in greater microtexture asperity on the particles' surface, as well as sharper peaks. The nanoscale morphological surface analysis allowed the determination of the most appropriate concentration of encapsulated EO, influencing statistical surface parameters.

Abstract
This review provides a synthesis of the last ten years of research on nanodelivery systems used for the delivery of essential oils (EOs), as well as their potential as a viable alternative to antibiotics in human and veterinary therapy. The use of essential oils alone in therapy is not always possible due to several limitations but nanodelivery systems seem to be able to overcome these issues. The choice of the essential oil, as well as the choice of the nanodelivery system influences the therapeutic efficacy obtained. While several studies on the characterization of EOs exist, this review assesses the characteristics of the nanomaterials used for the delivery of essential oils, as well as impact on the functionality of nanodelivered essential oils, and successful applications. Two classes of delivery systems stand out: polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) including chitosan, cellulose, zein, sodium alginate, and poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA), and lipidic NPs including nanostructured lipid carriers, solid lipid NPs, nanoemulsions, liposomes, and niosomes. While the advantages and disadvantages of these delivery systems and information on stability, release, and efficacy of the nanodelivered EOs are covered in the literature as presented in this review, essential information, such as the speed of emergence of a potential bacteria resistance to these new systems, or dosages for each type of infection and for each animal species or humans is still missing today. Therefore, more quantitative and in vivo studies should be conducted before the adoption of EOs loaded NPs as an alternative to antibiotics, where appropriate.

Abstract
Nanoencapsulation has been verified to be an effective technique to improve the physical stability of essential oils. In this study, Ocimum basilicum L. essential oil (BEO) was encapsulated into chitosan nanoparticles by emulsion and ionic gelation. The success of BEO loading was revealed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet visible spectrophotometry and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images and dynamic light scattering (DLS) illustrated regular distribution and spherical morphology with a particle size range of 198.7 - 373.4 nm. The prepared samples had an encapsulation efficiency (EE) range of 50.39 - 5.13% and a loading capacity (LC) range of 7.22-19.78%. Encapsulation of BEO into chitosan nanocarriers demonstrated strong antibacterial and antibiofilm capacity against E. coli and S. aureus with inhibition diameter of 15.3 mm and 21.0 mm, respectively, and the obtained nanoparticles were found to damage cell membranes and cause the leakage of biological macromolecules.

Abstract
Essential oil of industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) (IHEO) was reinforced in complexation of whey protein nanofibrils and mung bean protein nanoparticles (WPNF-MBP NPs) as a novel nano-carrier. A desirable retention rate range of 50.9-90.4% was confirmed for IHEO reinforced in WPNF-MBP NPs. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy revealed that IHEO was successfully loaded within WPNF-MBP NPs without specific chemical interaction with the carrier matrix. The results indicated that incorporation of IHEO-reinforced WPNF-MBP NPs into active material coatings having acceptable inhibition activity against total viable and psychrotrophic bacteria. The coated fishes also retarded the increase of PV (peroxide value), TBA (thiobarbituric acid) and TVB-N (total volatile basic nitrogen) values during storage. The IHEO-reinforced WPNF-MBP NPs coating led to an extension in the shelf life of Rainbow trout fillets within 8-14 days of storage. Accordingly, IHEO-reinforced WPNF-MBP NPs can be suggested as a natural preservative for coating fishes.

Abstract
Colloidal particle-stabilized emulsions have recently gained increasing interest as delivery systems for essential oils. Despite the use of silica particles in food and pharmaceutical applications, the formation and release of hydrophilic and hydrophobic silica particle-stabilized emulsions are still not well studied. Thus, in this study, the structures of hydrophilic (A200, A380, 244FP, and 3150) and hydrophobic (R202 and R106) silica were deeply characterized using the solid state, contact angle, and other properties that could affect the formation of emulsions. Following that, Mosla chinensis essential oil emulsions were stabilized with different types of silica, and their characteristics, particularly their release behavior, were studied. Fick's second law was used to investigate the mechanism of release. Additionally, six mathematical models were employed to assess the experimental data of release: zero-order, first-order, Higuchi, Hixson-Crowell, Peppas, and Page models. The release mechanism of essential oils demonstrated that diffusion was the dominant mechanism, and the fitting results for the release kinetics confirmed that the release profiles were governed by the Higuchi model. The contact angle and specific surface area were the key properties that affect the release of essential oils from emulsions. Hydrophilic A200 was found to be capable of delivering essential oils more efficiently, and silica particles could be extended to achieve the controlled release of bioactives. This study showed that understanding the impact of silica particles on the release behavior provided the basis for modulating and mapping material properties to optimize the performance of emulsion products.

Abstract
This study is aimed at optimizing the Saffron essential oil (SEO) nanoparticles using the ionic gelation method. Response surface methodology (RSM) with Box-Behnken design (BBD) was applied to investigate the optimum conditions and the effects of three independent variables: LWCS concentration (0.1-0.3%), Arabic gum concentration (9.6-9.8%), and ratio (core: wall material) (1 : 5, 1 : 7.5, 1 : 10) on the responses of z-average, polydispersity index (PDI), and zeta potential. The results showed that the quadratic model developed from the RSM was statistically significant (p value < 0.05). The quadratic model can be used to describe well the relationship between the variables on the response observed. The lack of fit was nonsignificant (p value > 0.05) relative to pure error for all response variables, indicating that the model fitted well. The model equation obtained for the process through RSM was adequate. The LWCS concentration and Arabic gum concentration had a significant effect on z-average and PDI. The ratio (oil: Arabic gum/LWCS) has a significant effect on zeta potential. The optimum condition was the LWCS concentration of 0.1% and Arabic gum concentration of 9.6%, and the ratio (oil: Arabic gum/LWCS) 1 : 5 produced the optimum SEO nanoparticles with a z-average value of 16.24, PDI of 0.495, and zeta potential of 15.76. The verification values were close to the predictive value given by the Design Expert® 12 program with p value > 0.05 at the 95% confidence level. Therefore, the application of the RSM with Box-Behnken was suitable for optimizing the saffron oil nanoparticles with desirable responses.

Abstract
Essential oils (EOs) of greater celandine (GC) roots and leaves were extracted, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used for analyzing them. Then they were loaded into chitosan nanoparticles (CNPs) using emulsion-ionic gelation method. CNPs loaded with greater celandine root essential oil (GCREO) and leave essential oil (GCLEO) were synthesized (size 76.5-115.3 nm) using an emulsion-ionic gelation method. Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR), spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were used for characterization of the formed NPs. Good encapsulation efficiency was confirmed for GCREO (62.5%) and GCLEO (69.1%) in CNPs. According to the MTT results, the synthesized NPs showed a dose-dependent effect on MCF-7 cell line. The inhibitory concentration (IC50) values for GCREO, GCLEO, CSNRs-GCREO and CNPs-GCLEO samples were 126.4, 90.2, 77.6, and 41.5 μg/mL, respectively. The highest rate of apoptosis was obtained in the CNPs-GCLEO group (63.73%). The results revealed that the cytotoxicity of CSNRs-GCREO and CNPs-GCLEO against MCF-7 cell line was significantly higher than that of their free form, implying that encapsulation of GCREO and GCLEO in CNPs is an efficient technique for improving their anti-cancer activity against MCF-7 cell line.

Abstract
The chitosan nanomatrix incorporated with Cymbopogon citratus essential oil (Ne-CcEO) possess enhanced efficacy against the food-borne molds and aflatoxin B1 production compared to free essential oil. The CcEO was encapsulated inside the chitosan nanomatrix with an average size 147.41 ± 16.18 nm and characterized by Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction assay. The encapsulation efficiency and loading capacity were ranged between (41.68-76.78%) and (5.3-8.80%). The biochemical and in-silico analysis results revealed the interference in functioning of membrane integrity, mitochondrial membrane potential, antioxidant defense, carbon source metabolism, methylglyoxal, and laeA gene in response to treatment of Ne-CcEO (0.5 μl/ml). In addition, Ne-CcEO significantly protects the deterioration of Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br. seed samples by A. flavus, aflatoxin B1 contamination, and lipid peroxidation. The Ne-CcEO could be considered as promising antifungal additives for the control of food-borne molds and aflatoxin B1 contamination in the food system.

Abstract
Microbes are the biggest shareholder for the quantitative and qualitative deterioration of food commodities at different stages of production, transportation, and storage, along with the secretion of toxic secondary metabolites. Indiscriminate application of synthetic preservatives may develop resistance in microbial strains and associated complications in human health with broad-spectrum environmental non-sustainability. The application of essential oils (EOs) as a natural antimicrobial and their efficacy for the preservation of foods has been of present interest and growing consumer demand in the current generation. However, the loss in bioactivity of EOs from fluctuating environmental conditions is a major limitation during their practical application, which could be overcome by encapsulating them in a suitable biodegradable and biocompatible polymer matrix with enhancement to their efficacy and stability. Among different nanoencapsulated systems, nanoemulsions effectively contribute to the practical applications of EOs by expanding their dispersibility and foster their controlled delivery in food systems. In line with the above background, this review aims to present the practical application of nanoemulsions (a) by addressing their direct and indirect (EO nanoemulsion coating leading to active packaging) consistent support in a real food system, (b) biochemical actions related to antimicrobial mechanisms, (c) effectiveness of nanoemulsion as bio-nanosensor with large scale practical applicability, (d) critical evaluation of toxicity, safety, and regulatory issues, and (e) market demand of nanoemulsion in pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals along with the current challenges and future opportunities.

Abstract
This study was aimed to encapsulate lemongrass (Cymbopogon commutatus) essential oil (LGEO) into chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs) and to investigate their physicochemical, morphological, structural, thermal, antimicrobial and in-vitro release properties. CSNPs exhibited spherical morphology with an average hydrodynamic size of 175-235 nm. Increasing EO loading increased the average size of CSNPs from 174 to 293 nm (at CS:EO ratio from 1:0 to 1:1.25). SEM and AFM confirmed the results obtained by hydrodynamic size indicating that EO loading led to formation of large aggregated NPs. The successful physical entrapment of EO within NPs was shown by fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. X-ray diffractogram of loaded-CSNPs compared to non-loaded CSNPs exhibited a broad high intensity peak at 2θ = 19-25° implying the entrapment of LGEO within CSNPs. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that encapsulated EO was decomposed at a temperature of 252 °C compared to a degradation temperature of 126 °C for pure LGEO, indicating a two-fold enhancement in thermal stability of encapsulated CSNPs. Differential scanning calorimetry also proved the physical entrapment of EO into polymeric matrix of chitosan. In-vitro release study showed a time- and pH-dependent release of EO into release media demonstrating a three-stage release behavior with a rapid initial release of EO, followed by a steady state migration of EO from its surrounding envelope at the later stages. Antimicrobial assay showed strong antimicrobial properties of free form of LGEO against the bacteria (both gram positive and gram negative) and fungi species tested. Moreover, loaded-CSNPs exhibited stronger antibacterial and anti-fungal activities than non-loaded CSNPs.

Abstract
The study aimed to obtain chitosan composite films with gratifying physical and functional properties. First, we developed a Pickering emulsion containing clove essential oil (CEO)-loaded nanoparticles with 1:2 (w/w) zein and sodium caseinate (NaCas). We found that in this ratio, the CEO-loaded zein-NaCas (C/ZN) nanoparticles had smaller particle size, proper polydispersity index (PDI) and zeta potential as well as higher encapsulation efficiency. Then, the acquired C/ZN nanoparticles were incorporated into chitosan film at three levels (0.2%, 0.4% and 0.6%), reducing the water vapor permeability to 4.62 × 10-6 g·s-1·m-1·Pa. Also, the tensile strength and break elongation of chitosan films were increased, reaching 38.67 MPa and 1.56%, respectively. The infrared spectroscopy verified that the intermolecular hydrogen bonds exist between chitosan and C/ZN nanoparticles. The chitosan composite films showed a controlled-release property of CEO in 96 h. Finally, the chitosan composite films showed the improved antibacterial property by creating larger inhibition zones against Escherichia coli (3.29 mm) and Staphylococcus aureus (6.15 mm). In general, we improved the water resistance, light blocking, mechanical strength, controlled-release and antibacterial properties of chitosan film with C/ZN nanoparticles. The current edible antibacterial films have great potential on applications for food preservation and food delivery system.

Abstract
This study aimed to develop polysaccharide-based emulsions incorporated with lavender essential oil and their application on cellulosic support for patches obtaining. The lavender essential oil has been added to emulsions as an active compound mainly due to its antimicrobial properties. In this study, emulsions were used to deliver active ingredients (lavender essential oil). The chemical composition of essential oil was analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). A total of seven emulsions (RiACL) were evaluated by determining rheological parameters and microbiological analysis. One of the emulsions (R7ACL) was applied to cellulosic support to obtain non-irritating textiles with controlled release of the active compound and moisturizing effects. Obtained cellulosic support was analyzed in terms of active compound controlled release, toxicity and antimicrobial testing, and skin analysis in healthy volunteers. It was found that the cellulosic supports treated with O/W emulsions are non-irritating, have softness and moisturizing effects, and can be used safely in topical applications for patches obtaining.

Abstract
Currently, applications of essential oils for protection of postharvest fruits against fungal infestation and mycotoxin contamination are of immense interest and research hot spot in view of their natural origin and possibly being an alternative to hazardous synthetic preservatives. However, the practical applications of essential oils in broad-scale industrial sectors have some limitations due to their volatility, less solubility, hydrophobic nature, and easy oxidation in environmental conditions. Implementation of nanotechnology for efficient incorporation of essential oils into polymeric matrices is an emerging and novel strategy to extend its applicability by controlled release and to overcome its major limitations. Moreover, different nano-engineered structures (nanoemulsion, suspension, colloidal dispersion, and nanoparticles) developed by applying a variety of nanoencapsulation processes improved essential oil efficacy along with targeted delivery, maintaining the characteristics of food ingredients. Nanoemulsion-based edible coating of essential oils in fruits poses an innovative green alternative against fungal infestation and mycotoxin contamination. Encapsulation-based coating of essential oils also improves antifungal, antimycotoxigenic, and antioxidant properties, a prerequisite for long-term enhancement of fruit shelf life. Furthermore, emulsion-based coating of essential oil is also efficient in the protection of physicochemical characteristics, viz., firmness, titrable acidity, pH, weight loss, respiration rate, and total phenolic contents, along with maintenance of organoleptic attributes and nutritional qualities of stored fruits. Based on this scenario, the present article deals with the advancement in nanoencapsulation-based edible coating of essential oil with efficient utilization as a novel safe green preservative and develops a green insight into sustainable protection of fruits against fungal- and mycotoxin-mediated quality deterioration.

Abstract
Polymer-based nanoparticles of tailored size, morphology, and surface properties have attracted increasing attention as carriers for drugs, biomolecules, and genes. By protecting the payload from degradation and maintaining sustained and controlled release of the drug, polymeric nanoparticles can reduce drug clearance, increase their cargo's stability and solubility, prolong its half-life, and ensure optimal concentration at the target site. The inherent immunomodulatory properties of specific polymer nanoparticles, coupled with their drug encapsulation ability, have raised particular interest in vaccine delivery. This paper aims to review current and emerging drug delivery applications of both branched and linear, natural, and synthetic polymer nanostructures, focusing on their role in vaccine development.

Abstract
Since chitosan's excellent pharmacokinetic and chemical properties, it is an attractive and promising carbohydrate biopolymer in biomedical applications. Chitosan's beneficial function in the defense and propagation of pancreatic β cells, reducing hyperglycemia, and avoiding diabetes mellitus associated with impaired lipid metabolism has been demonstrated in several studies. Additionally, chitosan has also been used in various nanocarriers to deliver various antidiabetic drugs to reduce glucose levels. Herein, the first to provide the currently available potential benefits of chitosan in diabetes mellitus treatment focuses on chitosan-based nanocarriers for oral administration of various antidiabetic drugs nasal and subcutaneous passages. Moreover, chitosan is used to activate and deliver stem cells and differentiate them into cells similar to pancreatic beta cells as a new type of treatment for type one diabetes mellitus. The results of this review will be helpful in the development of promising treatments and better control of diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
The potential of chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs) loaded with essential oil (EO) incorporated into semi-solid PVA hydrogels for use in wound management was studied. Two types of essential oil were compared including clove essential oil (CEO) and turmeric essential oil (TEO). The EO-loaded CSNPs were prepared by a two-step method; oil-in-water (o/w) emulsification followed by ionic gelation using different ratios of chitosan:EO (i.e., 1:0.25, 1:0.50, 1:0.75, and 1:1.00 w/w). The increasing amount of EO caused more aggregate structure as observed from SEM images. The TEO-loaded CSNPs showed a higher extent of aggregation than the CEO-loaded CSNPs. The adhesiveness of the semi-solid PVA hydrogels containing TEO-loaded CSNPs was the highest. The use of EO-loaded CSNPs in the semi-solid PVA hydrogel helped to sustain and prolong the release rate of EO from the hydrogels as compared to just the EO alone. The studied semi-solid PVA hydrogels were non-toxic to both NCTC clone 929 and NHDF cells. Overall results suggested that these semi-solid hydrogels are good candidates for use in wound management.

Abstract
In this work, a novel composite carrier system for loading essential oils was developed by using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) as silica precursors and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as a template, and the resultant aminated mesoporous silica was further chemically modified by polyacrylic acid (PAA). The obtained composite carriers exhibited a high loading capability toward tea tree oil (TTO), and they also significantly improved the release behavior of TTO due to the steric hindrance of silica mesopore and the polymer restriction. Besides, it was found that the release behavior followed the First-Order kinetic model, revealing that the release of TTO was driven by the concentration gradient. In addition, these composite carriers with essential oil-loaded demonstrated remarkable antibacterial performance againstE. coliandS. aureus, and they could retain antibacterial performance even after 50 d. Moreover, the antibacterial mechanism was also elucidated with the assistance of nucleic acid and conductivity measurements. Therefore, this work provides a facile and environmentally friendly approach to preparing effective composite carriers for improving the sustained release of essential oils, and the long-term antibacterial performance of these essential oil-loaded composite carriers makes them tremendously potential for practical applications.

Abstract
Bacterial infections have become one of the top ten public health concerns worldwide. These problems are aggravated with the emergence of multi-drug resistant bacterial strains. Thus, it is necessary to adopt novel technological strategies, such as development of bionanomaterials to prevent the infection, and treat this kind of bacteria. At this regard, the chemical modification of chitosan (Cs), by the covalent attachment of a hydrocarbon chain (octanoic acid), was developed to obtain hydrophobic chitosan (HCs). Then, HCs was used to synthetize nanoparticles using the well-known ionotropic gelation approach, optimizing the parameters, such as the TPP/HCs ratio and pH solution to get stable nanoparticles. Then, carvacrol (CAR) was loaded into NPs (HCs-CAR NPs) using different concentrations of 25%, 50% and 75% (%w/w CAR/HCs). The physicochemical properties for HCs-CAR NPs prepared at 50% of CAR stood out from the rest, showing a spherical morphology, with a size of 200 nm, Z potential of 10.4 mV and encapsulation efficiency of 56.28%. These formulations were chosen to evaluate the antibacterial activity, using Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive bacterial model (Staphylococcus aureus). The HCs-CAR NPs showed great activity against both bacterial models, being more effective against Gram (+) strain (S. aureus), suggesting the potential application of these NPs as novel biomaterial to treat bacterial infection.

Abstract
In this study, chitosan nanoparticles (CNPs) were prepared by the ionic gelation technique with tripolyphosphate (TPP), and the effect of CNP composition and physicochemical characteristics were evaluated. After the synthesis optimization, CNPs were used as carriers for a fish protein hydrolysate (FPH) with bioactive properties (CNPH). The physicochemical characteristics, antioxidant capacity and antimicrobial, antihypertensive and emulsifier properties of unloaded and loaded CNPs in a food system model were studied. CNPH showed a uniform particle distribution, size ~200 nm, high stability (zeta potential around 30 mV), radical scavenging activity and increased antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella sonnei and Aeromonas hydrophila. Additionally, CNPH showed an angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitory activity of 63.6% and, when added to a food emulsion model, this system containing CNPs, with or without FHP, exhibited improved food emulsion stability. Thus, CNPs were able to carry the FPH while maintaining their bioactive properties and can be an alternative to the delivery of bioactive peptides with potential as an emulsion stabilizer for food applications.

Abstract
Food microbial contamination not only poses the problems of food insecurity and economic loss, but also contributes to food waste, which is another global environmental problem. Therefore, effective packaging is a compelling obstacle for shielding food items from outside contaminants and maintaining its quality. Traditionally, food is packaged with plastic that is rarely recyclable, negatively impacting the environment. Bio-based materials have attracted widespread attention for food packaging applications since they are biodegradable, renewable, and have a low carbon footprint. They provide a great opportunity to reduce the extensive use of fossil fuels and develop food packaging materials with good properties, addressing environmental problems and contributing significantly to sustainable development. Presently, the developments in food chemistry, technology, and biotechnology have allowed us to fine-tune new methodologies useful for addressing major safety and environmental concerns regarding packaging materials. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the development and potential for application of new bio-based materials from different sources in antimicrobial food packaging, including carbohydrate (polysaccharide)-based materials, protein-based materials, lipid-based materials, antibacterial agents, and bio-based composites, which can solve the issues of both environmental impact and prevent foodborne pathogens and spoilage microorganisms. In addition, future trends are discussed, as well as the antimicrobial compounds incorporated in packaging materials such as nanoparticles (NPs), nanofillers (NFs), and bio-nanocomposites.

Abstract
Food industries attempt to introduce a new food packaging by blending essential oils (EOs) into the polymeric matrix as an active packaging, which has great ability to preserve the quality of food and increase its shelf life by releasing active compounds within storage. The main point in designing the active packaging is controlled-release of active substances for their enhanced activity. Biopolymers are functional substances, which suggest structural integrity to sense external stimuli like temperature, pH, or ionic strength. The controlled release of EOs from active packaging and their stimuli-responsive properties can be very important for practical applications of these novel biocomposites. EOs can affect the uniformity of the polymeric matrix and physical and structural characteristics of the composites, such as moisture content, solubility in water, water vapor transmission rate, elongation at break, and tensile strength. To measure the ingredients of EOs and their migration from food packaging, chromatographic methods can be used. A head-space-solid phase micro-extraction coupled to gas chromatography (HS-SPME-GC-MS) technique is as a good process for evaluating the release of Eos. Therefore, the aims of this review were to evaluate the qualitative characteristics, release profile, and stimuli-responsiveness of active and smart food packaging nanocomposites loaded with essential oils and developing such multi-faceted packaging for advanced applications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Colorectal cancer (CRC) is major aliment around the word, with a cumulative rate of mortality. Metformin (MT) was recently approved as anticancer drug against solid tumors, such as CRC. Resistance to MT therapy remains to be a challenging matter facing the development of possible anti-cancer strategy. To circumvent this problem, MT nano-encapsulation has been introduced to sensitize resistant cancer cells. The purpose of the current study is to explore the MT's aptitude encapsulated in lecithin (LC) and chitosan (CS) nanoparticles to inhibit CRC proliferation through modulations of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), micro RNAs (miRNAs), and some biochemical markers. METHODS AND RESULTS Cytotoxic screenings of the newly synthesized MT-based regimens; MT, MT-LC NPs (NP1), MT-CS NPs (NP2), and MT-LC-CS NPs (NP3) against colorectal cancerous Caco-2 and HCT116 cell lines versus normal WI-38 cells were performed. The epigenetic mechanistic effects of these proposed regimens on lncRNAs and miRNAs were investigated. Additionally, some protein levels were assessed in CRC cells upon treatments; YKL-40, PPARγ, E-cadherin (ECN), and VEGF. We resulted that NP1 recorded the highest significant cytotoxic effect on CRC cells. HCT116 cells were more sensitive to the NP1 compared to Caco-2 cells. Intriguingly, it was suggested that NP1 tackled the CRC cells through down-regulation of the H19, HOTTIP, HULC, LINC00641, miR-200, miR-92a, miR-21, YKL-40, PPARγ, and VEGF expressions, as well as up-regulation of the miR-944 and ECN expressions. CONCLUSIONS We concluded that the NP1 can potentially be cytotoxic to CRC cells in-vitro by modulating noncoding RNA.
