Evaluation of elastomeric heat shielding materials as insulators for solid propellant rocket motors: A short review

This review addresses a comparison, based on the literature, among nitrile rubber (NBR), ethylene-propylene-diene-monomer rubber (EPDM), and polyurethane (PU) elastomeric heat shielding materials (EHSM). Currently, these are utilized for the insulation of rocket engines to prevent catastrophic breakdown if combustion gases from propellant reaches the motor case. The objective of this review is to evaluate the performance of PU–EHSM, NBR–EHSM, and EPDM–EHSM as insulators, the latter being the current state of the art in solid rocket motor (SRM) internal insulation. From our review, PU–EHSM emerged as an alternative to EPDM–EHSM because of their easier processability and compatibility with composite propellant. With the appropriate reinforcement and concentration in the rubber, they could replace EPDM in certain applications such as rocket motors filled with composite propellant. A critical assessment and future trends are included. Rubber composites novelties as EHSM employs specialty fillers, such as carbon nanotubes, graphene, polyhedral oligosilsesquioxane (POSS), nanofibers, nanoparticles, and high-performance engineering polymers such as polyetherimide and polyphosphazenes.

Durability of PS-Polyurethane Dedicated for Composite Strengthening Applications in Masonry and Concrete Structures

Polyurethane flexible joints (PUFJ) and fiber reinforced polyurethanes (FRPU) have shown great potential in the repair and protection of masonry and concrete structures. However, some questions have been raised about the durability of such solutions. The accelerated weathering and thermal stability tests carried out so far have shown the mechanical stability of PS-polyurethane in temperatures up to 100 °C and some UV-induced surface degradation. The paper reports the results from tensile tests of PS-polyurethane, used in the technologies mentioned above after being subjected to aging in different corrosive factors, a thermal analysis of unaged polymer which consists of DSC-TGA and dilatometry studies, and SEM-microscopy observation of the specimens with the indication of the elemental composition (EDS). PS-polyurethane showed low sensitivity to weathering with exposition to UV-radiation, some reactiveness to aqueous environments of a different chemical nature, and resistivity to soil and freezing in both air and water. SEM observations indicated changes in the composition of mineral fillers as the main effect of immersion in different water solutions. DSC-TGA studies showed the thermal stability of PS-polyurethane up to 200 °C and degradation proceeding in five stages. Dilatometry studies revealed that the first-degree thermal degradation over 200 °C causes a serious loss of mechanical properties.

Damage and Repair in Informational Poly(N-substituted urethane)s

The degradation and repair of uniform sequence-defined poly(N-substituted urethane)s was studied. Polymers containing an ω-OH end-group and only ethyl carbamate main-chain repeat units rapidly degrade in NaOH solution through an ω→α depolymerization mechanism with no apparent sign of random chain cleavage. The degradation mechanism is not notably affected by the nature of the side-chain N-substituents and took place for all studied sequences. On the other hand, depolymerization is significantly influenced by the molecular structure of the main-chain repeat units. For instance, hexyl carbamate main-chain motifs block unzipping and can therefore be used to control the degradation of specific sequence sections. Interestingly, the partially degraded polymers can also be repaired; for example by using a combination of N,N'-disuccinimidyl carbonate with a secondary amine building-block. Overall, these findings open up interesting new avenues for chain-healing and sequence editing.

Magnetorheological Elastomers: Fabrication, Characteristics, and Applications

Magnetorheological (MR) elastomers become one of the most powerful smart and advanced materials that can be tuned reversibly, finely, and quickly in terms of their mechanical and viscoelastic properties by an input magnetic field. They are composite materials in which magnetizable particles are dispersed in solid base elastomers. Their distinctive behaviors are relying on the type and size of dispersed magnetic particles, the type of elastomer matrix, and the type of non-magnetic fillers such as plasticizer, carbon black, and crosslink agent. With these controllable characteristics, they can be applied to various applications such as vibration absorber, isolator, magnetoresistor, and electromagnetic wave absorption. This review provides a summary of the fabrication, properties, and applications of MR elastomers made of various elastomeric materials.

Polyurethane/Zinc Oxide (PU/ZnO) Composite-Synthesis, Protective Propertyand Application

A polyurethane (PU) is a multifunctional polymer prepared by using more than two types of monomers. The unique properties of PU come from monomers, thus broadening the applicability of PU in many different sectors. The properties can be further improved by using many nanoparticles. Different metal oxides as nanoparticles are also widely used in PU materials. ZnO is a widely used inorganic metal oxide nanoparticle for improving polymer properties. In this review article, the techniques to prepare a PU/ZnO composite are reviewed; the key protective properties, such as adhesive strength and self-healing, and applications of PU/ZnO composites are also highlighted. This review also highlights the PU/ZnO composite's current challenges and future prospects, which will help to broaden the composite practical application by preparing environmentally friendly composites.

Flame Retardancy of Bio-Based Polyurethanes: Opportunities and Challenges

Sustainable polymers are emerging fast and have received much more attention in recent years compared to petro-sourced polymers. However, they inherently have low-quality properties, such as poor mechanical properties, and inadequate performance, such as high flammability. In general, two methods have been considered to tackle such drawbacks: (i) reinforcement of sustainable polymers with additives; and (ii) modification of chemical structure by architectural manipulation so as to modify polymers for advanced applications. Development and management of bio-based polyurethanes with flame-retardant properties have been at the core of attention in recent years. Bio-based polyurethanes are currently prepared from renewable, bio-based sources such as vegetable oils. They are used in a wide range of applications including coatings and foams. However, they are highly flammable, and their further development is dependent on their flame retardancy. The aim of the present review is to investigate recent advances in the development of flame-retardant bio-based polyurethanes. Chemical structures of bio-based flame-retardant polyurethanes have been studied and explained from the point of view of flame retardancy. Moreover, various strategies for improving the flame retardancy of bio-based polyurethanes as well as reactive and additive flame-retardant solutions are discussed.

Three-Dimensional Visualization for Early-Stage Evolution of Polymer Aging

Monitoring the evolution of polymer aging, especially early-stage aging, over both time and dimensionality can provide in-depth insight into aging-induced material invalidation and even disastrous accidents. However, it remains a great challenge because currently available methods for polymer aging only provide statistic results at a macroscopic scale. Herein, we report the first three-dimensional early-stage visualization (ESV) technique of polymer aging by using the fluorophore-bonded boronic acid to specifically target aging-induced hydroxyl groups through the B-O click reaction. This method can identify the initial aging of polypropylene (PP) as early as 20.0 min. In contrast, no signals can be detected by conventional infrared spectroscopy even after 21 days of thermal treatment. More importantly, the three-dimensional evolution for early-stage polymer aging was demonstrated: faster aggression in the horizontal plane (4.1 × 10-4 s-1) than in the vertical direction (2.6 × 10-9 m s-1) for PP films. The approach could undoubtedly provide valuable information in elucidating mechanistic details of polymer aging in three-dimensional scale and assessing the utility of advanced antiaging materials.

Preparation, Characterization of Propargyl Terminal Polybutadiene and Its Crosslinked Elastomers Properties

Propargyl terminal Polybutadiene (PTPB) was successfully prepared through hydroxyl terminal polybutadiene (HTPB) end-capping modification. The FTIR and ¹³C NMR results indicated that the HTPB terminal hydroxyl was thoroughly replaced and yielded the target product, PTPB, with a theoretical propargyl content of 0.66 mmol g⁻¹. In comparison with HTPB, PTPB has a lower viscosity. Using 1,6-diazide hexane as a curing agent, polytriazole crosslinked polybutadiene (PT_riPB) elastomers with various functional molar ratios (R) were prepared by CuAAC reaction, and the glass transition temperatures of the resultant PT_riPB elastomers were approximately −75 °C, measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), nearly independent of elastomer R values. Mechanical tests indicated, that with the increase in R, the mechanical properties of PT_riPB elastomers exhibit a parabolic dependence on R. In addition, the thermal stability of PT_riPB elastomers were also studied. The findings revealed some fundamental features of polytriazole crosslinking elastomer prepared by CuAAC reaction.

Preparation of Polyurethane Monolithic Resins and Modification with a Condensed Tannin-Yielding Self-Healing Property

Resins of polyurethane were prepared from vegetable oils (crambe and castor) and modified by adding green corrosion inhibitor (condensed tannin). The oils were characterized by gas chromatography with flame-ionization detection (GC-FID), attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The reaction was monitored by characterizing the intermediate products (polyester and prepolymer). The polyester was characterized by solubility in methanol, acidity index, hydroxyl groups and FTIR-ATR, and the prepolymer was characterized by solid content, solvent content, isocyanate (NCO) groups and FTIR-ATR. The formation of PU resins was confirmed by FTIR-ATR and TGA, and the presence of tannin particles incorporated in the coating can be observed by optical microscopy (OM). The absence of the band attributed to NCO in FTIR-ATR spectra of the resins confirmed the complete reaction between polyester and prepolymer. The OM observation and a video demonstrate that Polyurethane (PU)-modified with condensed tannin resin presents self-healing effect, probably through the formation of new hydrogen bonds when in contact with deionized water. Therefore, these results open possibilities for new synthetic routes aiming at improving the very important self-healing property for protecting metals and their alloys against corrosion, extending significantly the metallic materials lifetime as previously demonstrated by our group.

New approach to recycle office waste paper: Reinforcement for polyurethane with nano cellulose crystals extracted from waste paper

New approach to recycle office waste paper was purposed in this paper, i.e., cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) was extracted from waste paper and then used CNC as the organic filler to reinforce polyurethane elastomer (PUE) in thermal properties. A series of CNC/PUE nanocomposites was prepared in situ using a two-step process in solvent N,N-dimethylformamide solution by changing the content of CNC from 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4 to 5 wt%. The results showed that CNC was covalently bonded to PUE, and specifically concerned with the hard segments of PUE resulting from the strong hydrogen bonding. The interactions between CNC and PUE caused the increased thermal and thermo-mechanical properties, and decreased water absorption of nanocomposites. Importantly, the initial degradation temperature of PUE with 2 wt% content CNC (CNC/PUE2) increased by 21 °C. CNC/PUE2 had the better comprehensive properties with the worse water absorption, which made CNC/PUE2 appealing in load bearing and outdoor applications. Hence, this work not only provided a new recycling method of waste paper but also provided a thermolstable PUE with lower cost.

Optimized Synthesis of Biodegradable Elastomer PEGylated Poly(glycerol sebacate) and Their Biomedical Application

Poly(glycerol sebacate) (PGS), a biodegradable elastomer, has been extensively explored in biomedical applications for its favorable mechanical properties and biocompatibility. Efforts have been made to fabricate multifunctional PGS copolymer in recent years, in particular PGS-co-PEG (poly(glycerol sebacate)-co-polyethylene glycol) polymers. However, rare research has been systematically conducted on the effect of reactant ratios on physicochemical properties and biocompatibility of PGS copolymer till now. In this study, a serial of PEGylated PGS (PEGS) with PEG content from 20% to 40% and carboxyl to hydroxyl from 0.67 to 2 were synthesized by thermal curing process. The effects of various PEGS on the mechanical strength and biological activity were further compared and optimized. The results showed that the PEGS elastomers around 20PEGS-1.0C/H and 40PEGS-1.5C/H exhibited the desirable hydrophilicity, degradation behaviors, mechanical properties and cell viability. Subsequently, the potential applications of the 20PEGS-1.0C/H and 40PEGS-1.5C/H in bone repair scaffold and vascular reconstruction were investigated and the results showed that 20PEGS-1.0C/H and 40PEGS-1.5C/H could significantly improve the mechanical strength for the calcium phosphate scaffolds and exhibited preferable molding capability for fabrication of the vascular substitute. These results confirmed that the optimized PEGS elastomers should be promising multifunctional substrates in biomedical applications.
