Abstract
Due to their potential applicability as selective receptors in electrochemical or optical sensors, a bis(azophenol)calix[4]arene derivative H(2)L has been investigated. The complexation properties of this molecule towards Ni(2+) and Co(2+) metal ions has been studied. It is revealed that this ligand exhibits tetradentate with N(2)O(2) core when bound to Ni (II) or Co (II) metal ion. The optical response of azo groups of H(2)L towards Ni(2+), Co(2+), Cu(2+), Pb(2+) and Hg(2+) metal ions has been investigated in DMSO by UV-vis spectroscopy. The absorption spectra of calix[4]arene with cations show marked changes, especially for Co(2+) ion. Furthermore, Job's plot indicate 1:1 binding-stiochiometry for calix[4]arene with Co(2+) ion and Benson-Hilderbrand plot is used for the determination of its association constant. The investigation of UV-vis spectra of chromogenic calix[4]arene in different solvents shows that cis-trans isomerization of azo groups probably depends on kind of solvent. Also the different between the polarity and viscosity of organic solvents used is likely responsible for the changes of the band shape of the spectra.

Abstract
A novel photochromic azobenzene-based surfactant was described for organic chemistry in water. The molecule 4-butylazobenzyl-4'-triazologlucuronic acid sodium salt thus synthesized can be isomerized from its trans to its cis form reversibly in solution by simple light irradiation. That property allowed the recyclability of a model acetylation reaction performed in the surfactant media, compared to the well-known, commercially available sodium dodecyl sulfate surfactant media.

Abstract
Photochromic switches that are able to transmit information in a quick fashion have attracted a growing interest within materials science during the last few decades. Although very fast photochromic switching materials working within hundreds of nanoseconds based on other chromophores, such as spiropyranes, have been successfully achieved, reaching such fast relaxation times for azobenzene-based photochromic molecular switches is still a challenge. This review focuses on the most recent achievements on azobenzene-based light-driven real-time information-transmitting systems. Besides, the main relationships between the structural features of the azo-chromophore and the thermal cis-to-trans isomerisation, the kinetics and mechanism are also discussed as a key point for reaching azoderivatives endowed with fast thermal back-isomerisation kinetics.

Abstract
Organotrifluoroborates have emerged as an alternative to toxic and air- and moisture-sensitive organometallic species for the synthesis of functionalized aryl and heteroaryl compounds. It has been shown that the trifluoroborate moiety can be easily converted into a variety of different substituents in a late synthetic stage. In this paper, we disclose a mild, selective, and convenient method for the ipso-nitrosation of organotrifluoroborates using nitrosonium tetrafluoroborate (NOBF(4)). Aryl- and heteroaryltrifluoroborates were converted into the corresponding nitroso products in good to excellent yields. This method proved to be tolerant of a broad range of functional groups.

Abstract
Azobenzenes have attracted great interest in recent years because of their ability to change conformation upon irradiation. This property has been featured in several applications not only in organic chemistry but also in biology. Even though monoazobenzenes have been extensively studied and documented in the literature, only a few methods are available for the synthesis of oligo-ortho-azobenzenes. Also, their photochemical properties have not been reported so far. This study shows an efficient strategy for the preparation of oligo-ortho-azobenzenes and the investigation of their photochemical properties. It is demonstrated that the absorption spectra are highly influenced by the substituents. Interestingly, none of the ortho-bis-, tris-, or tetra-azobenzenes showed any E → Z isomerization. Only the ortho-nitrogen-substituted monoazobenzenes' photochromic behavior upon UV irradiation was observed.

Abstract
A water soluble azo dye modified β-cyclodextrin polymer 4 was synthesized and used as a chemosensor for the detection of chlorinated phenols, model chlorinated by-products (CBPs) of water treatment for drinking purposes. The characterization of the intermediates and the azo dye modified β-CD polymer was done by UV/Vis Spectrophotometry, FT-IR and 1H-NMR spectroscopies. The chlorophenols were capable of quenching the fluorescence of the polymer. The polymer showed greater sensitivity towards 2,4-dichlorophenol, with a sensitivity factor of 0.35 compared to 0.05 and 0.12 for phenol and 4-chlorophenol, respectively. The stability constants (Ks) of the pollutants were also determined by the Benesi-Hildebrand method to be 2.104 × 103 M−1 for 2,4-dichlorophenol and 1.120 × 102 M−1 for 4-chlorophenol.

Abstract
The photoisomerization of azobenzene has been known for almost 75 years but only recently has this process been widely applied to biological systems. The central challenge of how to productively couple the isomerization process to a large functional change in a biomolecule has been met in a number of instances and it appears that effective photocontrol of a large variety of biomolecules may be possible. This critical review summarizes key properties of azobenzene that enable its use as a photoswitch in biological systems and describes strategies for using azobenzene photoswitches to drive functional changes in peptides, proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, and carbohydrates (192 references).

Abstract
A solvent-free method for the direct oxidation of anilines to the corresponding azo and azoxy homocoupling products by using a planetary ball mill was developed. Various oxidants and grinding auxiliaries were tested and a variety of substituted anilines were investigated. It was possible to form chemoselectively either azo, azoxy, or the nitro compounds from reaction of aromatic anilines. The selectivity of the solvent-free reaction is switchable by applying a combination of oxidant and grinding auxiliary. Furthermore, a comparison with other methods of energy input (microwave, classical heating, and ultrasound) highlighted the advantages of the ball mill approach and its high energy efficiency.
