About Supramolecular Assemblies of π-Conjugated Systems

Water compatible supramolecular polymers: recent progress

Water compatible supramolecular polymers (WCSPs) combine aqueous compatibility with the reversibility and environmental responsiveness of supramolecular polymers. WCSPs have seen application across a number of fields, including stimuli-responsive materials, healable materials, and drug delivery, and are attracting increasing attention from the design, synthesis, and materials perspectives. In this review, we summarize the chemistry of WCSPs from 2016 to mid-2021. For the sake of discussion, we divide WCSPs into five categories based on the core supramolecular approaches at play, namely hydrogen-bonding arrays, electrostatic interactions, large π-conjugated subunits, host-guest interactions, and peptide-based systems, respectively. We discuss both synthesis and polymer structure, as well as the underlying design expectations. The goal of this overview is to deepen our understanding of the strategies that have been exploited to prepare WCSPs, as well as their properties and uses. Thus, a section devoted to potential applications is included in this review.

A Full-Spectrum Porphyrin-Fullerene D-A Supramolecular Photocatalyst with Giant Built-In Electric Field for Efficient Hydrogen Production

A full-spectrum (300-850 nm) responsive donor-acceptor (D-A) supramolecular photocatalyst tetraphenylporphinesulfonate/fullerene (TPPS/C₆₀ ) is successfully constructed. The theoretical spectral efficiency of TPPS/C₆₀ is as high as 70%, offering the possibility of full-solar-spectrum light harvesting. The TPPS/C₆₀ performs a highly efficient photocatalytic H₂ evolution rate of 276.55 µmol h^-1 (34.57 mmol g^-1 h^-1 ), surpassing many reported organic photocatalysts. The D-A structure effectively promotes electron transfer from TPPS to C₆₀ , which is beneficial to the photocatalytic reaction. Specifically, a giant internal electric field in the D-A structure is built via the enhanced molecular dipole, which dramatically promotes the charge separation (CS) efficiency by 2.35 times. Transient absorption spectra results show a long-lived CS state TPPS^•+ -C₆₀ ^•- in the D-A structure, which effectively promotes participation of photogenerated electrons in the reduction reaction. Briefly, this work provides a novel approach for designing high-performance photocatalytic materials via enhancing the interfacial electric field.

Topology-Controlled AIEE of Iminocoumarin Luminophores

Aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) is an unusual phenomenon where luminophores show a higher photoluminescence efficiency in the aggregated and solid state. We report the design and synthesis of a series of luminophores 1-4 with imine functionality at 6 position of coumarin and studied their AIE propensities on self-assembly. The effect of the topology of the phenolic hydroxyl group on the emission behaviour of the luminophores has been investigated. The imines show significant solvatochromism with high emission in non-polar solvents, whereas the emission gets quenched in the polar solvent. The fluorescence in the toluene-hexane mixture arises due to the aggregation of fluorophores and falls under the category of AIEE. Not only the solution state emission of the isomeric iminocoumarin luminophores is notably varied, but also their solid-state emission found to be significantly different from each other. Moreover, the iminocoumarin 1 selectively recognizes Fe(III) over Fe(II) with a prominent color change. In situ oxidation of Fe(II) with H₂ O₂ exhibits the same effect like Fe(III) and developed a chemical combinational logic gate.

Astatine Facing Janus: Halogen Bonding vs. Charge-Shift Bonding

The nature of halogen-bond interactions was scrutinized from the perspective of astatine, potentially the strongest halogen-bond donor atom. In addition to its remarkable electronic properties (e.g., its higher aromaticity compared to benzene), C₆At₆ can be involved as a halogen-bond donor and acceptor. Two-component relativistic calculations and quantum chemical topology analyses were performed on C₆At₆ and its complexes as well as on their iodinated analogues for comparative purposes. The relativistic spin–orbit interaction was used as a tool to disclose the bonding patterns and the mechanisms that contribute to halogen-bond interactions. Despite the stronger polarizability of astatine, halogen bonds formed by C₆At₆ can be comparable or weaker than those of C₆I₆. This unexpected finding comes from the charge-shift bonding character of the C–At bonds. Because charge-shift bonding is connected to the Pauli repulsion between the bonding σ electrons and the σ lone-pair of astatine, it weakens the astatine electrophilicity at its σ-hole (reducing the charge transfer contribution to halogen bonding). These two antinomic characters, charge-shift bonding and halogen bonding, can result in weaker At-mediated interactions than their iodinated counterparts.

Computationally Guided Tuning of Peptide-Conjugated Perylene Diimide Self-Assembly

Peptide-π-conjugated materials are important for biointerfacing charge-transporting applications due to their aqueous compatibility and formation of long-range π-electron networks. Perylene diimides (PDIs), well-established charge-transporting π systems, can self-assemble in aqueous solutions when conjugated with amino acids. In this work, we leveraged computational guidance from our previous work to access two different self-assembled architectures from PDI-amino acid conjugates. Furthermore, we expanded the design rule to other sequences to learn that the closest amino acids to the π core have a significant effect on the photophysical properties of the resulting assemblies. By simply altering glycine to alanine at the closest residue position, we observed significantly different electronic properties as revealed through UV-vis, photoluminescence, and circular dichroism spectroscopies. Accompanying molecular dynamics simulations revealed two distinct types of self-assembled architectures: cofacial structures when the smaller glycine residue is at the closest residue position to the π core versus rotationally shifted structures when glycine is substituted for the larger alanine. This study illustrates the use of tandem computations and experiments to unearth and understand new design rules for supramolecular materials and exposes a modest amino acid substitution as a means to predictably modulate the supramolecular organization and engineer the photophysical properties of π-conjugated peptidic materials.

Molecular insertion regulates the donor-acceptor interactions in cocrystals for the design of piezochromic luminescent materials

Developing a universal strategy to design piezochromic luminescent materials with desirable properties remains challenging. Here, we report that insertion of a non-emissive molecule into a donor (perylene) and acceptor (1,2,4,5-tetracyanobezene) binary cocrystal can realize fine manipulation of intermolecular interactions between perylene and 1,2,4,5-tetracyanobezene (TCNB) for desirable piezochromic luminescent properties. A continuous pressure-induced emission enhancement up to 3 GPa and a blue shift from 655 to 619 nm have been observed in perylene-TCNB cocrystals upon THF insertion, in contrast to the red-shifted and quenched emission observed when compressing perylene-TCNB cocrystals and other cocrystals reported earlier. By combining experiment with theory, it is further revealed that the inserted non-emissive THF forms blue-shifting hydrogen bonds with neighboring TCNB molecules and promote a conformation change of perylene molecules upon compression, causing the blue-shifted and enhanced emission. This strategy remains valid when inserting other molecules as non-emissive component into perylene-TCNB cocrystals for abnormal piezochromic luminescent behaviors.

Energetics of Competing Chiral Supramolecular Polymers

Chirality can have unexpected consequences including on properties other than spectroscopic. We show herein that a racemic mixture of bis-urea stereoisomers forms thermodynamically stable supramolecular polymers that result in a more viscous solution than for the pure stereoisomer. The origin of this macroscopic property was probed by characterizing the structure and stability of the assemblies. Both racemic and non-racemic bis-urea stereoisomers form two competing helical supramolecular polymers in solution: a double and a single helical structure at low and high temperature, respectively. The transition temperature between these assemblies, as probed by spectroscopic and calorimetric analyses, is strongly influenced by the composition (by up to 70 °C). A simple model that accounts for the thermodynamics of this system, indicates that the stereochemical defects (chiral mismatches and helix reversals) affect much more the stability of single helices. Therefore, the heterochiral double helical structure predominates over the single helical structure (whilst the opposite holds for the homochiral structures), which explains the aforementioned higher viscosity of the racemic bis-urea solution. This rationale constitutes a new basis to tune the macroscopic properties of the increasing number of supramolecular polymers reported to exhibit competing chiral nanostructures.

Columnar Mesomorphism of Board-Shaped Perylene, Diketopyrrolopyrrole, Isoindigo, Indigo, and Quinoxalino-Phenanthrophenazine Dyes

The properties of organic dyes depend as much on their intermolecular interactions as on their molecular structure. While it is generally predictable what supramolecular structure would be ideal for a specific application, the generation of specific supramolecular structures by molecular design and suitable processing methods remains to be a challenge. A versatile approach to different supramolecular structures has been the application of mesomorphism in conjunction with alignment techniques and self-assembly at interfaces. Reviewed here is the columnar mesomorphism of board-shaped dyes perylene, indigo, isoindigo, diketopyrrolopyrrole, and quinoxalinophenanthrophenazine. They generate a larger number of different supramolecular structures than conventional disc-shaped (discotic) mesogens because of their non-circular shape and directional intermolecular interactions. The mesomorphism of all but the perylene derivatives is systematically and comprehensively covered for the first time.

Self-assembly of neutral platinum complexes possessing chiral hydrophilic TEG chains

Neutral platinum complexes that possess chiral triethylene glycol (TEG) moieties were synthesized. The platinum complexes formed helically twisted stacked assemblies in chloroform and toluene, which were studied by ¹H NMR, UV/vis spectroscopy, and emission spectroscopy. On the other hand, emissive micellar aggregates were observed in a THF/water mixed solvent. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments revealed that micellar aggregates with a diameter (d) of ≈100 nm emitted strong light, whereas the monomeric form and large aggregates (d > 500 nm) did not show luminescence efficiently. Furthermore, the micellar aggregates were twisted chirally, where the twisted direction was determined by the chirality of the TEG moieties. The assemblies were observed to be solvent responsive, which allows for the modulation of the nanostructure by changing the solvent polarity.

Chirality in polythiophenes: A review

Chiroptical polythiophene (PTh), as one of the most important chiral conductive polymers, is an emerging and hot topic in chiral materials, which shows great application potentials in fields as diverse as chiral sensing and separation, asymmetry catalysis, chiroptoelectronics, and even chiro-spintronics. This review summarizes progress in chiral polythiophenes (PThs) in the past 10 years, including the synthesis, properties and applications. Main focus is placed on the manner in which chirality is implemented and the optical activity of the chiral PThs. We showcase examples in which the chirality of PThs is induced by side chain substituents with point, planar, and axial chirality or arises from external chiral media. Application of chiral PThs is also included. Finally, perspectives for further development are offered.

Externally Regulated Specific Molecular Recognition Driven Pathway Selectivity in Supramolecular Polymerization

This article reveals 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) regulated pathway selectivity in the supramolecular polymerization of a naphthalene-diimide derivative (NDI-1), appended with a carboxylic acid group. In decane, NDI-1 produces ill-defined aggregate (Agg-1) due to different H-bonding motifs of the -COOH group. With one mole equivalent DMAP, the NDI-1/DMAP complex introduces new nucleation condition and exhibits a cooperative supramolecular polymerization producing J-aggregated fibrillar nanostructure (Agg-2). With 10 % DMAP and fast cooling (10 K/min), similar nucleation and open chain H-bonding with the free monomer in an anti-parallel arrangement produces identical J-aggregate (Agg-2a). With 2.5 % DMAP and slow cooling (1 K/min), a distinct nucleation and supramolecular polymerization pathway emerge leading to the thermodynamically controlled Agg-3 with face-to-face stacking and 2D-morphology. Slow cooling with 5-10 % DMAP produces a mixture of Agg-2a and Agg-3. Computational modelling studies provide valuable insights into the internal order and the pathway complexity.

Free Charge Carriers in Homo-Sorted π-Stacks of Donor-Acceptor Conjugates

Inspired by the high photoconversion efficiency observed in natural light-harvesting systems, the hierarchical organization of molecular building blocks has gained impetus in the past few decades. Particularly, the molecular arrangement and packing in the active layer of organic solar cells (OSCs) have garnered significant attention due to the decisive role of the nature of donor/acceptor (D/A) heterojunctions in charge carrier generation and ultimately the power conversion efficiency. This review focuses on the recent developments in emergent optoelectronic properties exhibited by self-sorted donor-on-donor/acceptor-on-acceptor arrangement of covalently linked D-A systems, highlighting the ultrafast excited state dynamics of charge transfer and transport. Segregated organization of donors and acceptors promotes the delocalization of photoinduced charges among the stacks, engendering an enhanced charge separation lifetime and percolation pathways with ambipolar conductivity and charge carrier yield. Covalently linking donors and acceptors ensure a sufficient D-A interface and interchromophoric electronic coupling as required for faster charge separation while providing better control over their supramolecular assemblies. The design strategies to attain D-A conjugate assemblies with optimal charge carrier generation efficiency, the scope of their application compared to state-of-the-art OSCs, current challenges, and future opportunities are discussed in the review. An integrated overview of rational design approaches derived from the comprehension of underlying photoinduced processes can pave the way toward superior optoelectronic devices and bring in new possibilities to the avenue of functional supramolecular architectures.

Supramolecular engineering of charge transfer in wide bandgap organic semiconductors with enhanced visible-to-NIR photoresponse

Organic photodetectors displaying efficient photoelectric response in the near-infrared are typically based on narrow bandgap active materials. Unfortunately, the latter require complex molecular design to ensure sufficient light absorption in the near-infrared region. Here, we show a method combining an unconventional device architecture and ad-hoc supramolecular self-assembly to trigger the emergence of opto-electronic properties yielding to remarkably high near-infrared response using a wide bandgap material as active component. Our optimized vertical phototransistors comprising a network of supramolecular nanowires of N,N'-dioctyl-3,4,9,10-perylenedicarboximide sandwiched between a monolayer graphene bottom-contact and Au nanomesh scaffold top-electrode exhibit ultrasensitive light response to monochromatic light from visible to near-infrared range, with photoresponsivity of 2 × 10⁵ A/W and 1 × 10² A/W, at 570 nm and 940 nm, respectively, hence outperforming devices based on narrow bandgap materials. Moreover, these devices also operate as highly sensitive photoplethysmography tool for health monitoring.

Molecular Recognition Driven Bioinspired Directional Supramolecular Assembly of Amphiphilic (Macro)molecules and Proteins

Bioinspired self-assembly has been explored with diverse synthetic scaffolds, among which amphiphiles are perhaps the most extensively studied systems. Classical surfactants or amphiphilic block copolymers, depending on the hydrophobic-hydrophilic balance, produce distinct nanostructures, which hold promise for applications ranging from biology to materials sciences. Nevertheless, their immiscibility-driven aggregation does not provide the opportunity to precisely regulate the internal order, morphology, or functional group display, which is highly desirable, especially in the context of biological applications.A new class of amphiphiles have emerged in the recent past in which the hydrophilic segment(s) is appended with a hydrophobic supramolecular-structure-directing-unit (SSDU), consisting of a π-conjugated chromophore and a H-bonding group. Self-recognition of the SSDU by attractive directional interactions governs the supramolecular assembly, which is fundamentally different than the repulsive solvent-immiscibility driven aggregation of traditional amphiphiles. Such SSDU-appended hydrophilic polymers exhibit entropy-driven highly stable self-assembly producing distinct nanostructures depending on the H-bonding functional group. For example, polymers with the hydrazide-functionalized SSDU attached form a polymersome, while in a sharp contrast, the same polymers when connected to an amide containing SSDU produce a cylindrical micelle via a spherical-micelle intermediate. This relationship holds true for a series of SSDU-attached hydrophilic polymers irrespective of the hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance or chemical structure, indicating that the supramolecular-assembly is primarily controlled by the specific molecular-recognition motif of the SSDU, instead of the packing parameter-based norms. Beyond synthetic polymers, SSDU-attached proteins also exhibit similar molecular-recognition driven self-assembly as well as coassembly with SSDU-attached polymers or hydrophilic wedges, producing multi-stimuli-responsive nanostructures in which the protein gains remarkable protection from thermal denaturation or enzymatic hydrolysis and exhibits redox-responsive enzymatic activity.Furthermore, SSDU-derived bola-shape π-amphiphiles have been recognized as a useful scaffold for the synthesis of unsymmetric polymersomes, rarely reported in the literature. The building block consists of a hydrophobic naphthalene-diimide (NDI) π-system attached to a hydrophilic functional group (ionic or nonionic) and a nonionic wedge on its two opposite arms. Extended H-bonding among the hydrazide groups, placed only on one side of the central chromophore by design, ensures stacking of the NDIs with parallel orientation and induces a preferred direction of curvature so that the H-bonded chain and consequently the functional groups attached to the same side remain at the inner-wall of the supramolecular polymersome. Automatically, the functional groups, located on the other side, are displayed at the outer surface. This design works for different amphiphiles, which by virtue of efficient and predictable functional group display, strongly influences the multivalent binding with different biological targets resulting in efficient enzyme inhibition, glycocluster effect, or antibacterial activity, depending on the nature of the functional group. By taking advantage of the electron accepting nature of the NDI, electron rich pyrene-containing amphiphiles can be costacked in alternating sequence, producing temperature and redox-responsive supramolecular polymers with NDI/pyrene stoichiometry-dependent morphology, lower critical solution temperature (LCST), functional group display, and antibacterial activity.

Theoretical study of the influence of doped oxygen group elements on the properties of organic semiconductors

Organic semiconductor materials are widely used in the field of organic electronic devices due to their wide variety, low price, and light weight. However, their developments are still restrained by their low stability and carrier mobility. Density functional theory (DFT) was used to study the influence of doped oxygen group elements (O, S, Se, and Te) on the properties of organic semiconductor materials (seven-membered benzothiophene, o-pentacene, thiophene derivatives, and pentacene) in this paper. Based on the calculation of E _HOMO, E _LUMO, ΔE, and total energy, the performances of organic semiconductor materials without and with doped elements were compared, and it was found that the doping of multi-element Te makes the material have high stability and potential high mobility. For these studied organic semiconductor materials, when the atoms of the doped site change in the order of O, S, Se, and Te, the carrier mobility gradually increases, and the molecules show a tendency of stability. In this paper, promising doping elements and doping methods for these studied molecules are determined through calculations and screening out suitable materials more efficiently and economically without a large amount of repetitive experimental work, which may provide a theoretical basis and guidance for preparing high-performance organic semiconductor materials.

Investigation of the Amide Linkages on Cooperative Supramolecular Polymerization of Organoplatinum(II) Complexes

Cooperative supramolecular polymerization of π-conjugated compounds into one-dimensional nanostructures has received tremendous attentions in recent years. It is commonly achieved by incorporating amide linkages into the monomeric structures, which provide hydrogen bonds for intermolecular non-covalent complexation. Herein, the effect of amide linkages is elaborately studied, by comparing supramolecular polymerization behaviors of two structurally similar monomers with the same platinum(II) acetylide cores. As compared to the N-phenyl benzamide linkages, N-[(1S)-1-phenylethyl] benzamide linkages give rise to effective chirality transfer behaviors due to the closer distances between the chiral units and the platinum(II) acetylide core. They also provide stronger intermolecular hydrogen bonding strength, which consequently brings higher thermo-stability and enhanced gelation capability for the resulting supramolecular polymers. Supramolecular polymerization is further strengthened by varying the monomers from monotopic to ditopic structures. Hence, with the judicious modulation of structural parameters, the current study opens up new avenues for the rational design of supramolecular polymeric systems.

Impact of Noncovalent Interactions on the Structural Chemistry of Thorium(IV)-Aquo-Chloro Complexes

Five novel tetravalent thorium (Th) compounds that consist of Th(H₂O)_xCl_y structural units were isolated from acidic aqueous solutions using a series of nitrogen-containing heterocyclic hydrogen (H) bond donors. Taken together with three previously reported phases, the compounds provide a series of monomeric Th^IV complexes wherein the effects of noncovalent interactions (and H-bond donor identity) on Th structural chemistry can be examined. Seven distinct structural units of the general formulas [Th(H₂O)_xCl_8-x]^x-4 (x = 2, 4) and [Th(H₂O)_xCl_9-x]^x-5 (x = 5-7) are described. The complexes range from chloride-deficient [Th(H₂O)₇Cl₂]²⁺ to chloride-rich [Th(H₂O)₂Cl₆]^2- species, and theory was used to understand the relative energies that separate complexes within this series via the stepwise chloride addition to an aquated Th cation. Electronic structure theory predicted the reaction energies of chloride addition and release of water through a series of transformations, generally highlighting an energetic driving force for chloride complexation. To probe the role of the counterion in the stabilization of these complexes, electrostatic potential (ESP) surfaces were calculated. The ESP surfaces indicated a dependence of the chloride distribution about the Th metal center on the pK_a of the countercation, highlighting the directing effects of noncovalent interactions (e.g., Hbonding) on Th speciation.

Effect of counter-anions on the aggregation of Thioflavin-T

The aggregation of small molecules in aqueous solution is known to be influenced by the ionic strength of the medium; however, the role played by the identity of salt in the phenomenon of small molecule aggregation is rarely investigated. In the present contribution, we have investigated the effect of counter-anions on the aggregation of a popular cationic amyloid sensing probe, Thioflavin-T (ThT), by taking six different anions, viz. chloride, bromide, acetate, iodide, tetrafluoroborate, and perchlorate. Our results clearly indicate that it is not the ionic strength of the medium which solely controls aggregation of small molecules but distinct ions behave distinctly with regard to the organization. In fact, distinct ion effects play a major role in the salt induced organization of fluorophores. Using detailed steady-state emission, time-resolved emission, and ground-state absorption measurements, the optical properties of salt induced aggregates of ThT have been characterized. We have rationalized our observations on the basis of the theory of matching water affinity, which suggests that the matching free hydration energy is a critical aspect for the formation of contact ion pairs, which eventually results in aggregation. In brief, a larger sized anion, perchlorate, has a lower free energy of hydration and forms a suitable contact ion pair, with a larger organic cation, ThT, having weaker hydration. This contact ion-pair formation subsequently leads to the formation of an aggregate assembly which is found to be emissive in nature. Therefore, it is possible to induce aggregation of ThT by selecting the right counterion with the appropriate size, which may help us to evaluate the false positive signals when high ionic strength and specific counterions are present in the sensing matrix.

π-Electronic Ion-Pairing Assemblies of Deprotonation-Induced Anions

Dipyrrolylnitrophenols (DPPhs) afforded various hydrogen-bonding-stabilized π-electronic anions upon deprotonation. Through ion-pair metathesis, π-electronic cations were introduced as a counter species to provide π-electronic ion pairs that occurred as tightly bound states in solution while resulting in solid-state charge-by-charge assemblies. The assembling modes were modulated according to the geometries and electronic states of the positively charged constituents along with the substituents of the DPPh anions.

Macroscalar Helices Co-Assembled from Chirality-Transferring Temperature-Responsive Carbohydrate-Based Bolaamphiphiles and 1,4-Benzenediboronic Acid

We present the first example of macroscalar helices co‐assembled from temperature‐responsive carbohydrate‐based bolaamphiphiles (CHO‐Bolas) and 1,4‐benzenediboronic acid (BDBA). The CHO‐Bolas contained hydrophilic glucose or mannose moieties and a hydrophobic coumarin dimer. They showed temperature‐responsive reversible micelle‐to‐vesicle transition (MVT) in aqueous solutions. After the binding of carbohydrate moieties with boronic acids of BDBA in their alkaline solutions, right‐handed helices were formed via the temperature‐driven chirality transfer of d‐glucose or d‐mannose from the molecular to supramolecular level. These helices were co‐assembled by unreacted BDBA, boronate esters (B−O−C bonds) between CHO‐Bolas and BDBA, as well as boroxine anhydrides (B−O−B bonds) of self‐condensed BDBA. After heating at 300 °C under nitrogen, the helices displayed excellent morphological stability. Moreover, they emitted bright blue luminescence caused by strong self‐condensation of BDBA and decomposition of coumarin dimers.

Orbital-Free Quantum Crystallographic View on Noncovalent Bonding: Insights into Hydrogen Bonds, π⋅⋅⋅π and Reverse Electron Lone Pair⋅⋅⋅π Interactions

A detailed analysis of a complete set of the local potentials that appear in the Euler equation for electron density is carried out for noncovalent interactions in the crystal of a uracil derivative using experimental X-ray charge density. The interplay between the quantum theory of atoms in molecules and crystals and the local potentials and corresponding inner-crystal electronic forces of electrostatic and kinetic origin is explored. Partitioning of crystal space into atomic basins and atomic-like potential basins led us to the definite description of interatomic interaction and charge transfer. Novel physically grounded bonding descriptors derived within the orbital-free quantum crystallography provided the detailed examination of π-stacking and intricate C=O⋅⋅⋅π interactions and nonclassical hydrogen bonds present in the crystal. The donor-acceptor character of these interactions is revealed by analysis of Pauli and von Weizsäcker potentials together with well-known functions, e. g., deformation electron density and electron localization function. In this way, our analysis throws light on aspects of these closed-shell interactions hitherto hidden from the description.

Helically and Linearly Fused Rylenediimide-Hexabenzocoronenes

Perylene- as well as naphthalenediimides were fused to hexabenzocoronenes (HBCs) at their imide position to realize highly π-extended donor-acceptor (D-A)-hybrids. Successful isomer separation in the first step was decisive to guarantee a straightforward synthetic sequence. Hexaphenylbenzenes as precursors were accessed via Diels-Alder reactions and reacted in a Scholl oxidation to yield the respective HBC derivatives. The fully conjugated benzimidazole linker, which separates the electron donating HBC from the electron accepting rylenediimide, enabled the formation of either a linear or a helical configuration. Largely different chemical, physical, and optoelectrical characteristics were noted for the two configurations. What stood out was their aggregation and their excited state deactivation depending on the solvent polarity. Results from global analysis of the femtosecond transient absorption data corroborated the formation of a charge-transfer (CT) state that is stabilized in the helically fused configuration relative to the linear analogue. However, a comparison with spectroelectrochemical experiments failed to disclose evidence for a charge-separated (CS) state.

Amphiphilic BODIPY dye aggregates in polymeric micelles for wavelength-dependent photo-induced cancer therapy

Near-infrared (NIR) light-responsive nanoparticles of organic small-molecule dyes hold great promise as phototherapeutic dyes (PDs) for clinical translation due to their intrinsic merits, including well-defined structure, high purity, and good reproducibility. However, they have been explored with limited success in the development of photostable NIR PDs with extraordinary photoconversion for highly effective phototherapy. Herein, we have described amphiphilic BODIPY dye aggregates within the polymeric micelles (Micelles) as potent bifunctional PDs for dually cooperative phototherapy under NIR irradiation. Micelles possessed an intensive NIR absorption, high photostability, and favorable non-radiative transition, thereby exhibiting both remarkable singlet oxygen generation and photothermal effect under NIR light irradiation. Besides, Micelles had preferable cellular uptake, effective cytoplasmic drug translocation as well as enhanced tumor accumulation. Owing to the combined virtues, Micelles showed clinical potential as bifunctional PDs for photo-induced cancer therapy. This work thus provides a facile strategy to exploit advanced PDs for practical phototherapeutic applications.

On-Surface Self-Assembled Structural Transformation Induced by Schiff Base Reaction and Hydrogen bonds

By utilizing scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), the self-assembled nanostructures of three characteristic aldehydes have been examined at the solution-solid interface. By introducing the active reactant 5-aminoisophthalic acid (5-AIPA), we succeeded in changing the self-assembled molecular structures through the condensation reaction and obtained the information on structural transformation in real time. The corresponding carboxyl conjugated derivatives were formed in situ and developed into the closely packed and ordered molecular architectures via hydrogen bonds at the solution-solid surface. The relevant simulations have been utilized to interpret the mechanisms of forming the nanostructures. The corresponding theoretical calculation is used to explain the reaction mechanism. Compared with the traditional ways, the on-surface condensation reaction in situ could not only provide a more convenient method for regulating the self-assembled architectures but also offer a promising strategy for building functional nanostructures and devices.

Addressing the Frenkel and charge transfer character of exciton states with a model Hamiltonian based on dimer calculations: Application to large aggregates of perylene bisimide

To understand the influence of interchromophoric arrangements on photo-induced processes and optical properties of aggregates, it is fundamental to assess the contribution of local excitations [charge transfer (CT) and Frenkel (FE)] to exciton states. Here, we apply a general procedure to analyze the adiabatic exciton states derived from time-dependent density functional theory calculations, in terms of diabatic states chosen to coincide with local excitations within a restricted orbital space. In parallel, motivated by the need of cost-effective approaches to afford the study of larger aggregates, we propose to build a model Hamiltonian based on calculations carried out on dimers composing the aggregate. Both approaches are applied to study excitation energy profiles and CT character modulation induced by interchromophore rearrangements in perylene bisimide aggregates up to a tetramer. The dimer-based approach closely reproduces the results of full-aggregate calculations, and an analysis in terms of symmetry-adapted diabatic states discloses the effects of CT/FE interactions on the interchange of the H-/J-character for small longitudinal shifts of the chromophores.

Double-Helix Supramolecular Nanofibers Assembled from Negatively Curved Nanographenes

The layered structures of graphite and related nanographene molecules play key roles in their physical and electronic functions. However, the stacking modes of negatively curved nanographenes remain unclear, owing to the lack of suitable nanographene molecules. Herein, we report the synthesis and one-dimensional supramolecular self-assembly of negatively curved nanographenes without any assembly-assisting substituents. This curved nanographene self-assembles in various organic solvents and acts as an efficient gelator. The formation of nanofibers was confirmed by microscopic measurements, and an unprecedented double-helix assembly by continuous π-π stacking was uncovered by three-dimensional electron crystallography. This work not only reports the discovery of an all-sp²-carbon supramolecular π-organogelator with negative curvature but also demonstrates the power of three-dimensional electron crystallography for the structural determination of submicrometer-sized molecular alignment.

Newer Non-ionic A2 B2 -Type Enzyme-Responsive Amphiphiles for Drug Delivery

A new series of nonionic gemini amphiphiles have been synthesized in a multi-step chemoenzymatic approach by using a novel A₂ B₂ -type central core consisting of conjugating glycerol and propargyl bromide on 5-hydroxy isophthalic acid. A pair of hydrophilic monomethoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (mPEG) and hydrophobic linear alkyl chains (C₁₂ /C₁₅ ) were then added to the core to obtain amphiphilic architectures. The aggregation tendency in aqueous media was studied by dynamic light scattering, fluorescence spectroscopy and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy. The nanotransport potential of the amphiphiles was studied for model hydrophobic guests, that is, the dye Nile Red and the drug Nimodipine by using UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. Evaluation of the viability of amphiphile-treated A549 cells showed them to be well tolerated up to the concentrations studied. Being ester based, these amphiphiles exhibit stimuli-responsive sensitivity towards esterases, and a rupture of amphiphilic architecture was observed in the presence of immobilized Candida antarctica lipase (Novozym 435), thus facilitating release of the encapsulated guest from the aggregate.

Assembled small organic molecules for photodynamic therapy and photothermal therapy

As a worldwide major public health problem, cancer is one of the leading causes of death. Effective treatment of cancer is an important challenge. Therefore, photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) have been widely applied as anti-tumour strategies due to their high-performance and limited side effects. Inspired by natural supramolecular architectures, such as cytochromes and photosystems, the hierarchical supramolecular assembly of small organic molecules has been developed for their use as photosensitizers or photothermal agents for PDT and PTT, respectively. In this manuscript, we will summarize the recent progress of PDT and PTT based on the assembly of small organic molecules.

Bending Behavior and Directed Self-Assembly of Rod-Coil Block Copolymers

The formation of zigzags, chevrons, Y-junctions, and line segments is demonstrated in thin films formed from cylindrical morphology silicon-containing conformationally asymmetric rod-coil diblock copolymers and triblock terpolymers under solvent annealing. Directed self-assembly of the block copolymers within trenches yields well-ordered cylindrical microdomains oriented either parallel or transverse to the sidewalls depending on the chemical functionalization of the sidewalls, and the location and structure of concentric bends in the cylinders is determined by the shape of the trenches. The innate etching contrast, the spontaneous sharp bends and junctions, and the range of demonstrated periodicity and line/space ratios make these conformationally asymmetric rod-coil polymers attractive for nanoscale pattern generation.

Expanding amphiphilic architectures by ring-opening of epoxides and polyepoxides with N-methyl-d-glucamine: Structure, chiral bias and gelation

The facile reaction of a readily available aminopolyol from the chiral pool, N-methyl-d-glucamine, which avoids the side reactions usually associated to anomers of amino sugars, with epoxide and polyepoxide derivatives, enables the preparation of new non-ionic surfactant-like structures combining hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties. The molecular architectures thus obtained range from linear to tripodal and pyramidal structures. The resulting substances containing multiple chiral centers exist as diastereomeric mixtures, for which various conformations are likewise possible by virtue of inter-chain interactions. The stability and chirality preferences of all possible stereoisomers have been evaluated in detail by DFT methods. Given the amphiphilic structure of both protected and O-protected derivatives obtained by acetylation, self-aggregation could eventually lead to solvent entrapment. Unfortunately, only one compound behaves as efficient hydrogelator and DMSO-gelator at low concentrations. The issue is also discussed in terms of the different molecular arrangements.

Pyrene-Modified Guanine Cluster Probes Forming DNA/RNA Hybrid Three-Way Junctions for Imaging of Intracellular MicroRNAs

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) regulate gene expression in cells; high levels of expression are associated with various cancers. In this paper, we describe ^PyA-modified nucleic acid probes that can detect intracellular miRNAs by forming DNA/RNA hybrid three-way junction structures containing a fluorescent scaffold-a so-called G-cluster. This G-cluster featured two mismatched strands, four guanine residues, and one fluorescent adenine residue having a pyrene moiety covalently connected at the 8-position through an acetylene linker. The scaffold underwent a dramatic shift in its emission wavelength when two mismatched strands formed a duplex, similar to the behavior of an adenine pentad system (A-cluster). We applied the G-cluster scaffold in a three-way junction system to probe for miRNAs; its red-shifted fluorescence intensity and stability were greater than those reported previously for A-cluster three-way junction probes. Furthermore, confocal microscopy of cancer cell lines revealed bright fluorescence emissions in response to the miRNAs in the cells. Thus, this system can be applied intracellularly as a potential fluorescent probe for the detection of various biologically important nucleic acids.

How to reprogram the excitonic properties and solid-state morphologies of π-conjugated supramolecular polymers

The development of supramolecular tools to modulate the excitonic properties of non-covalent assemblies paves the way to engineer new classes of semicondcuting materials relevant to flexible electronics. While controlling the assembly pathways of organic chromophores enables the formation of J-like and H-like aggregates, strategies to tailor the excitonic properties of pre-assembled aggregates through post-modification are scarce. In the present contribution, we combine supramolecular chemistry with redox chemistry to modulate the excitonic properties and solid-state morphologies of aggregates built from stacks of water-soluble perylene diimide building blocks. The n-doping of initially formed aggregates in an aqueous medium is shown to produce π-anion stacks for which spectroscopic properties unveil a non-negligible degree of electron-electron interactions. Oxidation of the n-doped intermediates produces metastable aggregates where free exciton bandwidths (ExBW) increase as a function of time. Kinetic data analysis reveals that the dynamic increase of free exciton bandwidth is associated with the formation of superstructures constructed by means of a nucleation-growth mechanism. By designing different redox-assisted assembly pathways, we highlight that the sacrificial electron donor plays a non-innocent role in regulating the structure-function properties of the final superstructures. Furthermore, supramolecular architectures formed via a nucleation-growth mechanism evolve into ribbon-like and fiber-like materials in the solid-state, as characterized by SEM and HRTEM. Through a combination of ground-state electronic absorption spectroscopy, electrochemistry, spectroelectrochemistry, microscopy, and modeling, we show that redox-assisted assembly provides a means to reprogram the structure-function properties of pre-assembled aggregates.

Effect of doped H, Br, Cu, Kr, Ge, As and Fe on structural features and bandgap of poly C13H8OS-X: a DFT calculation

Structural features such as the shape, the lattice constant, the bond length, the total energy per cell, and the energy bandgap (Eg) of C13H8OS-X are studied by the calculating Partial Density Of States (PDOS), and DOS package of the Material Studio (MS) software. Calculations show that the bond length and the bond angle between atoms insignificant change as 1.316 Å to 1.514 Å for C-C, 1.211 Å for C-O, 1.077 Å to 1.105 Å for C-H; bond angle of round one changes from 118.883° to 121.107° for C-C-C, from 117.199° to 122.635° for H-C-C, from 119.554° to 123.147° for C-C-O and from 109.956° to 117.537° for C-C-H. When C13H8OS-X doped in the order of -Br, -Cu, -Kr, -Ge, -As, and -Fe then bond lengths, bond angles between atoms have a nearly constant value. Particularly for links C-X, there is a huge change in value, respectively 1.876, 1.909, 10.675, 2.025, 2.016, 2.014 Å; the total energy change from Etot = -121,794 eV to Etot = -202,859 eV, and the energy band gap decreases from Eg = 2.001 eV to Eg = 0.915 eV. The obtained results are useful and serve as a basis for future experimental research.

Synergistic effect of hydrophobic and hydrogen bonding interaction-driven viologen-pyranine charge-transfer aggregates: adenosine monophosphate recognition

Understanding the role of non-covalent interactions that dictate and fine-tune the direction of self-assembly of functional molecules is crucial for developing stimuli responsive materials. Herein, we systematically designed and synthesized viologen derivatives with hydrophobic dodecyl chains and alkyl carboxylic acid functionalities. The complementary electronic and electrostatic counterpart of viologens was chosen as pyranine. Viologens comprising of a hydrophobic dodecyl chain on one terminal and hydrogen bonding alkyl carboxylic acid on the other (V1 and V2) underwent aggregation to a varying extent upon interaction with pyranine. The length of the alkyl carboxylic acid had a greater impact on the nature and morphology of the aggregates. Control molecules (V3 and V4) in which 4,4'-bipyridine was symmetrically quaternized with alkyl carboxylic acids did not aggregate upon interaction with pyranine. The delicate balance existing between the hydrophobicity of the dodecyl chains and the intermolecular hydrogen bonding interaction between the alkyl carboxylic acid groups in V1 or V2 of the corresponding charge transfer (CT) complexes was instrumental in driving the aggregation. The CT aggregates of [V1-Pyr] and [V2-Pyr] exhibited excellent stability in water which disaggregated at physiological pH. We emphasize on the importance of synergy between hydrophobic and hydrogen bonding interactions in reinforcing each other to drive the supramolecular aggregation of the CT complexes. Such pH dependent CT aggregates are of importance as scaffolds in pH controlled drug release. In the present study, the CT aggregates were evaluated for adenosine nucleotide recognition in water; [V1-Pyr] and [V2-Pyr] exhibited selective response towards adenosine monophosphate via deprotonation induced dissolution of aggregates in water leading to emission enhancement.

Polymeric Tissue Adhesives

Polymeric tissue adhesives provide versatile materials for wound management and are widely used in a variety of medical settings ranging from minor to life-threatening tissue injuries. Compared to the traditional methods of wound closure (i.e., suturing and stapling), they are relatively easy to use, enable rapid application, and introduce minimal tissue damage. Furthermore, they can act as hemostats to control bleeding and provide a tissue-healing environment at the wound site. Despite their numerous current applications, tissue adhesives still face several limitations and unresolved challenges (e.g., weak adhesion strength and poor mechanical properties) that limit their use, leaving ample room for future improvements. Successful development of next-generation adhesives will likely require a holistic understanding of the chemical and physical properties of the tissue-adhesive interface, fundamental mechanisms of tissue adhesion, and requirements for specific clinical applications. In this review, we discuss a set of rational guidelines for design of adhesives, recent progress in the field along with examples of commercially available adhesives and those under development, tissue-specific considerations, and finally potential functions for future adhesives. Advances in tissue adhesives will open new avenues for wound care and potentially provide potent therapeutics for various medical applications.

A phase-dependent photoluminescent discotic liquid crystal bearing a graphdiyne substructure

In recent years, graphdiyne and its derivatives with fascinating electro-optic properties have attracted tremendous scientific attention. Here we design and synthesize a graphdiyne-derived discotic liquid crystal material by decorating six wedge-shaped 3,4,5-tris(dodecyloxy)benzoate groups on the fundamental structural unit of graphdiyne, the dehydrotribenzo[18]annulene core. This graphdiyne-derived liquid crystal material exhibits a cubic phase and a hexagonal columnar phase at varied temperatures. Most interestingly, this molecule displays a tunable phase-dependent photoluminescence behavior. Under the irradiation of 365 nm wavelength ultraviolet light, the luminescent material emits pale blue, green and azure light in the cubic, hexagonal columnar and isotropic phases respectively. This graphdiyne-derived discotic liquid crystal with excellent optical characteristics might have application potentials in organic optoelectronic functional materials and devices.

Supramolecular Ladder Assemblies as a Model for Probing Electronic Interactions between Multiple Stacked π-Conjugated Systems

A series of mono-, di-, and tri-topic receptors in which H-bonding sites, complementary to those of barbituric acid (BA), are fused is used to induce the supramolecular assembly of n×m ladders containing 1, 2, or 3 triphenylenevinylene units appended with BA. The topological constraint enforced by the architectures induces through-space interactions between the electroactive moieties that are reflected in the electronic absorption and emission spectrum. The n=2, m=2 or m=3 architectures undergo two single electron oxidation events, indicative of the formation of the corresponding mono- and di-radical cation species with comproportionation constants of 340 and 70, respectively. Comparison of the electrochemical potentials suggests that the charges are delocalized over the electroactive units in the assembly.

1,1'-Bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene Platinum(II) Complexes as a Route to Functionalized Multiporphyrin Systems

In this study, the cationic complex [PtMe(Me₂SO)(dppf)]CF₃SO₃ (PtFc) (dppf = 1,1′-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene) was exploited as a precursor to functionalize the multi-chromophoric system hexakis(pyridyl-porphyrinato)benzene (1). The final adduct [PtFc]₁₈-1, containing eighteen platinum(II) organometallic [PtMe(dppf)] fragments, was prepared and characterized through UV/Vis absorption, ³¹P{¹H}-NMR spectroscopy, and fluorescence emission. UV/vis and fluorescence titrations confirmed the coordination between the platinum(II) center and all the pyridyl moieties of the peripheral substituent groups of the porphyrin. The drop casting of diluted dichloromethane solution of [PtFc]₁₈-1 onto a glass surface afford micrometer-sized emissive porphyrin rings.

π-Extended perylene diimide double-heterohelicenes as ambipolar organic semiconductors for broadband circularly polarized light detection

Despite great challenges, the development of new molecular structures with multiple and even conflicting characteristics are eagerly pursued for exploring advanced applications. To develop high-performance chiral organic semiconducting molecules, a distorted π-system is required for strong coupling with circularly polarized light (CPL), whereas planar π-stacking systems are necessary for high charge-carrier mobility. To address this dilemma, in this work, we introduce a skeleton merging approach through distortion of a perylene diimide (PDI) core with four fused heteroaromatics to form an ortho-π-extended PDI double-[7]heterohelicene. PDI double helicene inherits a high dissymmetry factor from the helicene skeleton, and the extended π-planar system concurrently maintains a high level of charge transport properties. In addition, ortho-π-extension of the PDI skeleton brings about near-infrared (NIR) light absorption and ambipolar charge transport abilities, endowing the corresponding organic phototransistors with high photoresponsivity of 450 and 120 mA W-1 in p- and n-type modes respectively, along with a high external quantum efficiency (89%) under NIR light irradiations. Remarkably, these multiple characteristics enable high-performance broadband CPL detections up to NIR spectral region with chiral organic semiconductors.
