A Free Phosphaborene Stable at Room Temperature

Free phosphaborenes (R-P═B-R) are PB analogues of alkynes, and their isolation is a long-sought-after goal. Herein, we demonstrate that the combination of a π-donating and a π-accepting substituent with bulky flanking arene rings enables the isolation of a crystalline free phosphaborene 5 at room temperature. This electron push-pull cooperation, combined with the kinetic protection, hinders its inherent tendency to oligomerize. This species features a PB double bond consisting of a conventional σ bond and a delocalized π bond. The lone pair of electrons at P slightly contributes to the PB bonding. Preliminary reactivity studies show that 5 undergoes facile (cyclo)addition reactions with p-methyl benzaldehyde, p-fluoroacetophenone, and carbon disulfide, the last of which results in facile PB double bond cleavage. Our strategy has a significant impact on the future synthesis of ambiphilic heterodiatomic multiply bonded main group species.

Transition metal-free ketene formation from carbon monoxide through isolable ketenyl anions

The capacity of transition metals to bind and transform carbon monoxide (CO) is critical to its use in many chemical processes as a sustainable, inexpensive C1 building block. By contrast, only few s- and p-block element compounds bind and activate CO, and conversion of CO into useful carbonyl-containing organic compounds in such cases remains elusive. We report that metalated phosphorus ylides provide facile access to ketenyl anions ([RC=C=O]^-) by phosphine displacement with CO. These anions are very stable and storable reagents with a distinctive electronic structure between that of the prototypical ketene (H₂C=C=O) and that of ethynol (HC≡C-OH). Nonetheless, the ketenyl anions selectively react with a range of electrophiles at the carbon atom, thus offering high-yielding and versatile access to ketenes and related compounds.

Labile Base-Stabilized Silyliumylidene Ions. Non-Metallic Species Capable of Activating Multiple Small Molecules

Several base-stabilized silyliumylidene ions (2 and 3) with different ligands were synthesized. Their behaviour appeared strongly dependent on the nature of ligand. Indeed, in contrast to the poorly reactive silyliumylidene ions 3 c,d stabilized by strongly donating ligands (DMAP, NHC), the silylene- and sulfide-supported one (2-H and 3 a) exhibits higher reactivity toward various small molecules. Furthermore, their capability to successively activate multiple small molecules was clearly demonstrated by processes involving successive reactions with silane/formamide, CO2 and H2 . Moreover, HBPin adduct of 3 a (8-C) catalyzes the hydroboration of pyridine. Of particular interest, silylene-supported silyliumylidene complex 2-H is one of the rare species able to activate two H2 molecules.

B(C6 F5 )3 -Catalyzed E-Selective Isomerization of Alkenes

Herein, we report the B(C₆ F₅ )₃ -catalyzed E-selective isomerization of alkenes. The transition-metal-free method is applicable across a diverse array of readily accessible substrates, giving access to a broad range of synthetically useful products containing versatile stereodefined internal alkenes. The reaction mechanism was investigated by using synthetic and computational methods.

Modulating the frontier orbitals of L(X)Ga-substituted diphosphenes [L(X)GaP]2 (X = Cl, Br) and their facile oxidation to radical cations

Modulating the electronic structures of main group element compounds is crucial to control their chemical reactivity. Herein we report on the synthesis, frontier orbital modulation, and one-electron oxidation of two L(X)Ga-substituted diphosphenes [L(X)GaP]2 (X = Cl 2a, Br 2b; L = HC[C(Me)N(Ar)]2, Ar = 2,6-i-Pr2C6H3). Photolysis of L(Cl)GaPCO 1 gave [L(Cl)GaP]22a, which reacted with Me3SiBr with halide exchange to [L(Br)GaP]22b. Reactions with MeNHC (MeNHC = 1,3,4,5-tetramethylimidazol-2-ylidene) gave the corresponding carbene-coordinated complexes L(X)GaPP(MeNHC)Ga(X)L (X = Cl 3a, Br 3b). DFT calculations revealed that the carbene coordination modulates the frontier orbitals (i.e. HOMO/LUMO) of diphosphenes 2a and 2b, thereby affecting the reactivity of 3a and 3b. In marked contrast to diphosphenes 2a and 2b, the cyclic voltammograms (CVs) of the carbene-coordinated complexes each show one reversible redox event at E 1/2 = -0.65 V (3a) and -0.36 V (3b), indicating their one-electron oxidation to the corresponding radical cations as was confirmed by reactions of 3a and 3b with the [FeCp2][B(C6F5)4], yielding the radical cations [L(X)GaPP(MeNHC)Ga(X)L]B(C6F5)4 (X = Cl 4a, Br 4b). The unpaired spin in 4a (79%) and 4b (80%) is mainly located at the carbene-uncoordinated phosphorus atoms as was revealed by DFT calculations and furthermore experimentally proven in reactions with n Bu3SnH, yielding the diphosphane cations [L(X)GaPHP(MeNHC)Ga(X)L]B(C6F5)4 (X = Cl 5a, Br 5b). Compounds 2-5 were fully characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopy as well as by single crystal X-ray diffraction (sc-XRD), and compounds 4a and 4b were further studied by EPR spectroscopy, while their bonding nature was investigated by DFT calculations.

Reversible Oxidative Addition of Zinc Hydride at a Gallium(I)-Centre: Labile Mono- and Bis(hydridogallyl)zinc Complexes

In the presence of TMEDA (N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine), partially deaggregated zinc dihydride as hydrocarbon suspensions react with the gallium(I) compound [(BDI)Ga] (I, BDI={HC(C(CH3 )N(2,6-iPr2 -C6 H3 ))2 }- ) by formal oxidative addition of a Zn-H bond to the gallium(I) centre. Dissociation of the labile TMEDA ligand in the resulting complex [(BDI)Ga(H)-(H)Zn(tmeda)] (1) facilitates insertion of a second equiv. of I into the remaining Zn-H to form a thermally sensitive trinuclear species [{(BDI)Ga(H)}2 Zn] (2). Compound 1 exchanges with polymeric zinc dideuteride [ZnD2 ]n in the presence of TMEDA, and with compounds I and 2 via sequential and reversible ligand dissociation and gallium(I) insertion. Spectroscopic and computational studies demonstrate the reversibility of oxidative addition of each Zn-H bond to the gallium(I) centres.

Small molecule activation with bimetallic systems: a landscape of cooperative reactivity

There is growing interest in the design of bimetallic cooperative complexes, which have emerged due to their potential for bond activation and catalysis, a feature widely exploited by nature in metalloenzymes, and also in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, we discuss the widespread opportunities derived from combining two metals in close proximity, ranging from systems containing multiple M-M bonds to others in which bimetallic cooperation occurs even in the absence of M⋯M interactions. The choice of metal pairs is crucial for the reactivity of the resulting complexes. In this context, we describe the prospects of combining not only transition metals but also those of the main group series, which offer additional avenues for cooperative pathways and reaction discovery. Emphasis is given to mechanisms by which bond activation occurs across bimetallic structures, which is ascribed to the precise synergy between the two metal atoms. The results discussed herein indicate a future landscape full of possibilities within our reach, where we anticipate that bimetallic synergism will have an important impact in the design of more efficient catalytic processes and the discovery of new catalytic transformations.

Stereoselective Activation of Small Molecules by a Stable Chiral Silene

The reaction of the dilithium salt of the enantiopure (S)-BINOL (1,1'-bi-2-naphthol) with two equivalents of the amidinate-stabilized chlorosilylene [LPh SiCl] (LPh =PhC(NtBu)2 ) led to the formation of the first example of a chiral cyclic silene species comprising an (S)-BINOL ligand. The reactivity of the Si=C bond was investigated by reaction with elemental sulfur, CO2 and HCl. The reaction with S8 led to a Si=C bond cleavage and concomitantly to a ring-opened product with imine and silanethione functional groups. The reaction with CO2 resulted in the cleavage of the CO2 molecule into a carbonyl group and an isolated O atom, while a new stereocenter is formed in a highly selective manner. According to DFT calculations, the [2+2] cycloaddition product is the key intermediate. Further reactivity studies of the chiral cyclic silene with HCl resulted in a stereoselective addition to the Si=C bond, while the fully selective formation of two stereocenters was achieved. The quantitative stereoselective addition of CO2 and HCl to a Si=C bond is unprecedented.

Isolation and Reactivity of Tetrylene-Tetrylone-Iron Complexes Supported by Bis(N-Heterocyclic Imine) Ligands

The germanium iron carbonyl complex 3 was prepared by the reaction of dimeric chloro(imino)germylene [IPrNGeCl]2 (IPrN=bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin-2-iminato) with one equivalent of Collman's reagent (Na2 Fe(CO)4 ) at room temperature. Similarly, the reaction of chloro(imino)stannylene [IPrNSnCl]2 with Na2 Fe(CO)4 (1 equiv) resulted in the Fe(CO)4 -bridged bis(stannylene) complex 4. We observed reversible formation of bis(tetrylene) and tetrylene-tetrylone character in complexes 3 vs. 5 and 4 vs. 6, which was supported by DFT calculations. Moreover, the Li/Sn/Fe trimetallic complex 12 has been isolated from the reaction of [IPrNSnCl]2 with cyclopentadienyl iron dicarbonyl anion. The computational analysis further rationalizes the reduction pathway from these chlorotetrylenes to the corresponding complexes.

Deoxygenating Reduction of CO2 by [Cp*Al]4 to Form a (Al3O2C)2 Cluster Featuring Two Ketene Moieties

Herein we report that the reaction of the low-valent aluminum(I) species [Cp*Al]₄ (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) with CO₂ exhibits complete cleavages of the C═O bonds. The deoxygenating reduction reaction of [Cp*Al]₄ with CO₂ at 120 °C afforded [(Cp*)₃Al₃O₂C(CO)]₂ (1), which featured two stacked (Al₃O₂C)₂ units and two C═C═O ketene moieties. Moreover, the isoelectronic analogues of diimine and isothiocyanate with CO₂ were also investigated, and the reactions of [Cp*Al]₄ with Dipp*-N═C═N-Dipp* and Dipp-C═N═S [Dipp* = 2,6-bis(diphenylmethyl)-4-tert-butylphenyl; Dipp = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl] afforded dialuminylimine (2) and tetrameric [Cp*AlS]₄ (3), respectively.

Two σ- and two π-dative quadruple bonds between the s-block element and transition metal in [BeM(CO)4; M = Fe - Os]

We report the chemical bonding and reactivity of the first example of neutral 18 valence electron transition metal complexes of beryllium, [BeM(CO)₄; M = Fe - Os], in trigonal bipyramidal coordination geometry, where the bonding between the transition metal and the s-block element beryllium (M-Be) can be best described by dative quadruple bonds. In contrast to the conventional multiple bonding pattern, the quadruple bonds comprise two σ-bonds and two π-bonds, viz., one Be → M σ-bond, one M → Be σ-bond, and two M → Be π-bonds. Since the M-Be quadruple bonds are described by dative interactions, the Be centre shows ambiphilic character as indicated by the high proton and hydride affinity values.

A Boron-Nitrogen Double Transborylation Strategy for Borane-Catalyzed Hydroboration of Nitriles

Organoborane-catalyzed hydroboration of nitriles provides N,N-diborylamines, which act as efficient synthons for the synthesis of primary amines and secondary amides. Known nitrile hydroboration methods are dominated by metal catalysis. Simple and metal-free hydroboration of nitriles using diborane [H-B-9-BBN]₂ as a catalyst and pinacolborane as a turnover reagent is reported. The reaction of monomeric H-B-9-BBN with nitriles leads to the hydrido-bridged diborylimine intermediate; a subsequent sequential double hydroboration-transborylation pathway involving B-N/B-H σ bond metathesis is proposed.

Early Lanthanide(III) Ate Complexes Featuring Ln-Si Bonds (Ln = La, Ce): Synthesis, Structural Characterization, and Bonding Analysis

While research on lanthanide (Ln) complexes with silyl ligands is receiving growing attention, significantly unbalanced efforts have been devoted to different Ln elements. In comparison with the intense investigations on Ln elements such as Sm and Yb, the chemistry of silyl lanthanum and cerium complexes is much slower to develop, and no solid-state structure of a silyl lanthanum complex has been reported so far. In this research, four types of ate complexes, including [(DME)₃Li][Cp₃LnSi(H)Mes₂], [(18-crown-6)K][Cp₃LnSi(CH₃)Ph₂], [(DME)₃Li][Cp₃LnSiPh₃], and [(12-crown-4)₂Na] [Cp₃LnSi(Ph)₂Si(H)Ph₂] (Ln = La, Ce), were synthesized by reacting [(DME)₃Na][Cp₃La(μ-Cl)LaCp₃] or Cp₃Ce(THF) with alkali metal silanides. All of the synthesized silyl Ln ate complexes were structurally characterized. La-Si bond lengths are in a range of 3.1733(4)-3.1897(10) Å, and the calculated formal shortness ratios of the La-Si bonds (1.071.08) are comparable to those in the reported silyl complexes having other Ln metal centers. The Ce-Si bond lengths (3.1415(6)-3.1705(9) Å) are within the typical range of reported silyl cerium ate complexes. ²⁹Si solid-state NMR measurements on the diamagnetic silyl lanthanum complexes were conducted, and large one-bond hyperfine splitting constants arising from = 7/2) were resolved. Computational studies on these silyl lanthanum and cerium complexes suggested the polarized covalent feature of the Ln-Si bonds, which is in line with the measured large ¹J_¹³⁹La-Si splitting constants.

Structurally characterised intermediate of the oxidative addition of a heteroleptic germylene to gallanediyle

Bond activation reactions using main group metal complexes are gaining increasing interest. We report on reactions of LGa (L = HC[C(Me)N(Ar)]₂, Ar = Dipp = 2,6-i-Pr₂C₆H₃,) with heteroleptic tetrylenes L'ECl (E = Ge, Sn; L' = N(SiMe₃)Ar), yielding the donor-acceptor complex LGa-Sn(Cl)L' (1) or the oxidative addition product L(Cl)GaGeL' (3). The reaction with DMPGeCl (DMP = 2,6-Mes₂C₆H₃, Mes = 2,4,6-Me₃C₆H₂) yielded LGa(μ-Cl)GeDMP (2), which represents an intermediate of the oxidative addition reaction. 1-3 were characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopy as well as by single crystal X-ray diffraction (sc-XRD), while their electronic nature was analyzed by quantum chemical calculations.

Activation of Ammonia by a Carbene-Stabilized Dithiolene Zwitterion

A carbene-stabilized dithiolene zwitterion (3) activates ammonia, affording 4^• and 5, through both single-electron transfer (SET) and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT). Reaction products were characterized spectroscopically and by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The mechanism of the formation of 4^• and 5 was probed by experimental and computational methods. This discovery is the first example of metal-free ammonia activation via HAT.

Main-Group Catalysts with Atomically Dispersed In Sites for Highly Efficient Oxidative Dehydrogenation

Transition metal oxides are well-known catalysts for oxidative dehydrogenation thanks to their excellent ability to activate alkanes. However, they suffer from an inferior alkene yield due to the trade-off between the conversion and selectivity induced by more reactive alkenes than alkanes, which obscures the optimization of catalysts. Herein, we attempt to overcome this challenge by activating a selective main-group indium oxide considered to be inactive for oxidative dehydrogenation in conventional wisdom. Atomically dispersed In sites with the local structure of [InOH]²⁺ anchored by substituting the protons of supercages in HY are enclosed to be active centers that enable the activation of ethane with a metal-normalized turnover number of almost one magnitude higher than those of their supported In₂O₃ counterparts. Furthermore, the structure of isolated [InOH]²⁺ sites could be stabilized by in situ formed H₂O from the selective oxidation of hydrogen by In₂O₃ nanoparticles. As a result, the as-designed main-group In catalysts exhibit 80% ethene selectivity at 80% ethane conversion, thus achieving 60% ethene yield due to active isolated [InOH]²⁺ sites and selective In₂O₃ nanoparticles, outperforming state-of-the-art transition metal oxide catalysts. This study unlocks new opportunities for the utilization of main-group elements and could pave the way toward a more rational design of catalysts for highly efficient selective oxidation catalysis.

Oxidative addition or Werner coordination complex? Reactivity of β-diketiminate supported main group and first-row transition metal complexes towards ammonia

A series of neutral LM (L = [HC{(H₃C)C(Dipp)N}₂], Dipp = 2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃, M = group 13: B-In, TM: Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) and L'M (L' = [HC{(CCH₂)(CCH₃)(DippN)₂}], M = group 14: C-Pb) compounds including a main group 13/14 and first-row transition metal complexes were studied computationally by density functional theory (DFT). The optimised complexes were assessed in terms of structural parameters and electronic structures to find trends and characteristics that could be used to predict their reactivity towards ammonia. In addition, the differences in oxidative addition and Werner coordination complex formation depending on the identity of the central element were investigated and the Werner complexes were evaluated by QTAIM and EDA-NOCV approaches. The computational results complement the earlier experimental studies and shed light on the feasibility of isolating novel main group Werner complexes or transition metal oxidative addition products.

Mechanism of the Aryl-F Bond-Forming Step from Bi(V) Fluorides

In this article, we describe a combined experimental and theoretical mechanistic investigation of the C(sp2)-F bond formation from neutral and cationic high-valent organobismuth(V) fluorides, featuring a dianionic bis-aryl sulfoximine ligand. An exhaustive assessment of the substitution pattern in the ligand, the sulfoximine, and the reactive aryl on neutral triarylbismuth(V) difluorides revealed that formation of dimeric structures in solution promotes facile Ar-F bond formation. Noteworthy, theoretical modeling of reductive elimination from neutral bismuth(V) difluorides agrees with the experimentally determined kinetic and thermodynamic parameters. Moreover, the addition of external fluoride sources leads to inactive octahedral anionic Bi(V) trifluoride salts, which decelerate reductive elimination. On the other hand, a parallel analysis for cationic bismuthonium fluorides revealed the crucial role of tetrafluoroborate anion as fluoride source. Both experimental and theoretical analyses conclude that C-F bond formation occurs through a low-energy five-membered transition-state pathway, where the F anion is delivered to a C(sp2) center, from a BF4 anion, reminiscent of the Balz-Schiemann reaction. The knowledge gathered throughout the investigation permitted a rational assessment of the key parameters of several ligands, identifying the simple sulfone-based ligand family as an improved system for the stoichiometric and catalytic fluorination of arylboronic acid derivatives.

Lewis Acid Assisted Brønsted Acid Catalysed Decarbonylation of Isocyanates: A Combined DFT and Experimental Study

An efficient and mild reaction protocol for the decarbonylation of isocyanates has been developed using catalytic amounts of Lewis acidic boranes. The electronic nature (electron withdrawing, electron neutral, and electron donating) and the position of the substituents (ortho/meta/para) bound to isocyanate controls the chain length and composition of the products formed in the reaction. Detailed DFT studies were undertaken to account for the formation of the mono/di-carboxamidation products and benzoxazolone compounds.

Mechanistic Investigations on Hydrogenation, Isomerization and Hydrosilylation Reactions Mediated by a Germyl-Rhodium System

We recently disclosed a dehydrogenative double C-H bond activation reaction in the unusual pincer-type rhodium-germyl complex [(ArMes)2ClGeRh] (ArMes=C6H3-2,6-(C6H2-2,4,6-Me3)2). Herein we investigate the catalytic applications of this Rh/Ge system in several transformations, namely trans-semihydrogenation of internal alkynes, trans-isomerization of olefins and hydrosilylation of alkynes. We have compared the activity and selectivity of this catalyst against other common rhodium precursors, as well as related sterically hindered rhodium complexes, being the one with the germyl fragment superior in terms of selectivity towards E-isomers. To increase this selectivity, a tandem catalytic protocol that incorporates the use of a heterogeneous catalyst for the trans-semihydrogenation of internal alkynes has been devised. Kinetic mechanistic investigations provide important information regarding the individual catalytic cycles that comprise the overall trans-semihydrogenation of internal alkynes.

Synthesis of a low-valent Al4+ cluster cation salt

Low-valent aluminium compounds are very reactive main-group species and have therefore been widely investigated. Since the isolation of a stable molecular Al(I) compound in 1991, [(AlCp*)₄] (Cp* = [C₅Me₅]^-), a variety of highly reactive neutral or anionic low-valent aluminium complexes have been developed. By contrast, their cationic counterparts have remained difficult to access. Here, we report the synthesis of [Al(AlCp*)₃]⁺[Al(OR^F)₄]^- (R^F = C(CF₃)₃) through a simple metathesis reaction between [(AlCp*)₄] and Li[Al(OR^F)₄]. Unexpectedly, the [Al(AlCp*)₃]⁺ salt forms a dimer in the solid state and concentrated solutions. Addition of Lewis bases results in monomerization and coordination to the unique formal Al⁺ atom, giving [(L)_xAl(AlCp*)₃]⁺ salts where L is hexaphenylcarbodiphosphorane (x = 1), tetramethylethylenediamine (x = 1) or 4-dimethylaminopyridine (x = 3). The Al⁺-Al_Cp* bonds in the resulting [(L)_xAl(AlCp*)₃]⁺ cluster cations can be finely tuned between very strong (with no ligand L) to very weak and approaching isolated [Al(L)₃]⁺ ions (when L is dimethylaminopyridine).

Selective [2+1+1] Fragmentation of P4 by heteroleptic Metallasilylenes

Small-molecule activation by low-valent main-group element compounds is of general interest. We here report the synthesis and characterization (1 H, 13 C, 29 Si NMR, IR, sc-XRD) of heteroleptic metallasilylenes L1 (Cl)MSiL2 (M=Al 1, Ga 2, L1 =HC[C(Me)NDipp]2 , Dipp=2,6-i Pr2 C6 H3 ; L2 =PhC(Nt Bu)2 ). Their electronic nature was analyzed by quantum chemical computations, while their promising potential in small-molecule activation was demonstrated in reactions with P4 , which occurred with unprecedented [2+1+1] fragmentation of the P4 tetrahedron and formation of L1 (Cl)MPSi(L2 )PPSi(L2 )PM(Cl)L1 (M=Al 3, Ga 4).

Evidence for C-F Bond Formation through Formal Reductive Elimination from Tellurium(VI)

The fundamental challenge of C-F bond formation by reductive elimination has been met by compounds of select transition metals and fewer main group elements. The work detailed herein expands the list of main group elements known to be capable of reductively eliminating a C-F bond to include tellurium. Surprising and novel modes of both sp² and sp³ C-F bond formation were observed alongside formation of Te^IV cations during two separate attempts to synthesize/characterize fluorinated organotellurium(VI) cations in superacidic media (SbF₅ /SO₂ ClF). Following detailed low-temperature NMR experiments, the mechanisms of the two unique reductive elimination reactions were probed and investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Ultimately, we found that an "indirect" reductive elimination pathway is likely operative whereby Sb plays a key role in fluoride abstraction and C-F bond formation, as opposed to unimolecular reductive elimination from a discrete Te^VI cation.
