Self-Assembly of Colloidal Nanocrystals: From Intricate Structures to Functional Materials

Chemical methods developed over the past two decades enable preparation of colloidal nanocrystals with uniform size and shape. These Brownian objects readily order into superlattices. Recently, the range of accessible inorganic cores and tunable surface chemistries dramatically increased, expanding the set of nanocrystal arrangements experimentally attainable. In this review, we discuss efforts to create next-generation materials via bottom-up organization of nanocrystals with preprogrammed functionality and self-assembly instructions. This process is often driven by both interparticle interactions and the influence of the assembly environment. The introduction provides the reader with a practical overview of nanocrystal synthesis, self-assembly, and superlattice characterization. We then summarize the theory of nanocrystal interactions and examine fundamental principles governing nanocrystal self-assembly from hard and soft particle perspectives borrowed from the comparatively established fields of micrometer colloids and block copolymer assembly. We outline the extensive catalog of superlattices prepared to date using hydrocarbon-capped nanocrystals with spherical, polyhedral, rod, plate, and branched inorganic core shapes, as well as those obtained by mixing combinations thereof. We also provide an overview of structural defects in nanocrystal superlattices. We then explore the unique possibilities offered by leveraging nontraditional surface chemistries and assembly environments to control superlattice structure and produce nonbulk assemblies. We end with a discussion of the unique optical, magnetic, electronic, and catalytic properties of ordered nanocrystal superlattices, and the coming advances required to make use of this new class of solids.

Photocontrolled On-Surface Pseudorotaxane Formation with Well-Ordered Macrocycle Multilayers

The photoinduced pseudorotaxane formation between a photoresponsive axle and a tetralactam macrocycle was investigated in solution and on glass surfaces with immobilized multilayers of macrocycles. In the course of this reaction, a novel photoswitchable binding station with azobenzene as the photoswitchable unit and diketopiperazine as the binding station was synthesized and studied by NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy. Glass surfaces have been functionalized with pyridine-terminated SAMs and subsequently with multilayers of macrocycles through layer-by-layer self assembly. A preferred orientation of the macrocycles could be confirmed by NEXAFS spectroscopy. The photocontrolled deposition of the axle into the surface-bound macrocycle-multilayers was monitored by UV/Vis spectroscopy and led to an increase of the molecular order, as indicated by more substantial linear dichroism effects in angle-resolved NEXAFS spectra.

A Surface-Confined Proton-Driven DNA Pump Using a Dynamic 3D DNA Scaffold

A proton-driven molecular pump is devised using a surface-confined dynamic 3D DNA scaffold. A dynamic DNA tetrahedral nanostructure is designed by incorporating a pH-sensitive i-motif sequence in one edge, which serves as the scaffold to ensure highly ordered orientation and spatial isolation of this nanomachine on the macroscopic gold surface. It is found that the switching ability of this dynamic tetrahedron is fully maintained on the surface. Importantly, this proton-driven nanomachine can reversibly pump water and ferricynide in response to pH variation in solution.

Dynamic Covalent Nanoparticle Building Blocks

Rational and generalisable methods for engineering surface functionality will be crucial to realising the technological potential of nanomaterials. Nanoparticle-bound dynamic covalent exchange combines the error-correcting and environment-responsive features of equilibrium processes with the stability, structural precision, and vast diversity of covalent chemistry, defining a new and powerful approach for manipulating structure, function and properties at nanomaterial surfaces. Dynamic covalent nanoparticle (DCNP) building blocks thus present a whole host of possibilities for constructing adaptive systems, devices and materials that incorporate both nanoscale and molecular functional components. At the same time, DCNPs have the potential to reveal fundamental insights regarding dynamic and complex chemical systems confined to nanoscale interfaces.

The nanotechnology of life-inspired systems

For some decades now, nanotechnology has been touted as the 'next big thing' with potential impact comparable to the steam, electricity or Internet revolutions - but has it lived up to these expectations? While advances in top-down nanolithography, now reaching 10-nm resolution, have resulted in devices that are rapidly approaching mass production, attempts to produce nanoscale devices using bottom-up approaches have met with only limited success. We have been inundated with nanoparticles of almost any shape, material and composition, but their societal impact has been far from revolutionary, with growing concerns over their toxicity. Despite nebulous hopes that making hierarchical nanomaterials will lead to new, emergent properties, no breakthrough applications seem imminent. In this Perspective, we argue that the time is ripe to look beyond individual nano-objects and their static assemblies, and instead focus on systems comprising different types of 'nanoparts' interacting and/or communicating with one another to perform desired functions. Such systems are interesting for a variety of reasons: they can act autonomously without external electrical or optical connections, can be dynamic and reconfigurable, and can act as 'nanomachines' by directing the flow of mass, energy or information . In thinking how this systems nanoscience approach could be implemented to design useful - as opposed to toy-model - nanosystems, our choice of applications and our nanoengineering should be inspired by living matter.

Reversible gel-sol photoswitching with an overcrowded alkene-based bis-urea supergelator

A new type of low-molecular-weight gelator (LMWG), i.e. overcrowded alkene-based bis-ureas, can be switched effectively between cis and trans isomers using light as demonstrated by 1H NMR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Gelation studies reveal that one of the synthesized trans compounds forms stable gels in aromatic hydrocarbon solvents down to a critical concentration of 0.4 mg mL-1. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows that this gel consists of an entangled fibrous network. For the trans isomer of this LMWG intermolecular urea hydrogen bonding is observed in the solid state, whereas density functional theory (DFT) geometry optimization of the cis isomer indicates the possible formation of an intramolecular hydrogen bond. Irradiation of the gel triggers trans-to-cis isomerization and consequently, a gel-sol phase transition. This process can be fully reversed by altering the irradiation wavelength.

Individual and collective modes of surface magnetoplasmon in thiolate-protected silver nanoparticles studied by MCD spectroscopy

Large magneto-optical (MO) responses at the energy of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), namely, surface magnetoplasmons, are demonstrated for the first time in thiolate-protected silver nanoparticles with magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy. The samples examined are decanethiol (DT)-, azobenzenethiol (ABT)-, and ABT/DT mixed-monolayer-protected Ag nanoparticles. ABT-protected Ag nanoparticles are somewhat aggregated and thus exhibit a broad, collective mode of plasmonic absorption, whereas other samples with highly-dispersed nanoparticles show an individual mode of LSPR absorption. In all Ag nanoparticles, a derivative-like MCD signal is observed under an applied magnetic field of 1.6 T, which can be explained in terms of two circular modes of magnetoplasmon caused by the increase (or decrease) in the Lorentz force imparted on the free electrons that oscillate in the left (or right) circular orbits in the nanosphere. For the Ag nanoparticles exhibiting an individual LSPR mode, in particular, simultaneous deconvolution analysis of UV-vis absorption and MCD spectra reveal that (i) the amplitude of the magnetoplasmonic component with lower frequency (ω-), resulting from the reduction in the confinement strength of collective electrons by the Lorentz force, is stronger than that with a higher frequency (ω+); (ii) the accurate shift or cyclotron frequency between two magnetoplasmonic modes (ωc = ω+-ω-) is size-dependent, and presents a very large value with implications for the apparent enhancement of the local magnetic-field in the Ag nanoparticles. These results strongly suggest that the Ag-thiolate layer or Ag-S bonding on the nanoparticle surface plays a significant role in the MO enhancement.

Proton NMR spectroscopy is used to estimate the percentage occupancies of the macrocycle at the respective station and importantly indicates that the halogen bonding rotaxane displays superior positional integrity in competitive protic solvent media as a consequence of strong halogen bond–halide anion binding interactions.

Femtosecond Time-Resolved Dynamics of trans-Azobenzene on Gold Nanoparticles

We report a first femtosecond time-resolved transient absorption study of the photoinduced ultrafast dynamics of trans-azobenzene (AB) on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The observed changes in optical density following excitation at λ = 357 nm were analyzed by using temperature-dependent Mie theory and by Lorentzian band fitting to disentangle the ultrafast relaxation of the local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) excitation of the Au core and the electronic deactivation of the attached AB ligands. The analysis of the dynamics associated with the AB photochrome yielded lifetime constants of τ1 = 1.2 ± 0.2 ps and τ2 = 4.7 ± 1.1 ps. Both values together indicate surprisingly little difference in the dynamics of the AB ligand on the AuNPs vs in solution. Our results thus highlight the extraordinarily efficient electronic decoupling of the azo chromophore and the Au core by the alkyl linker chain.

Nanoparticles functionalized with supramolecular host-guest systems for nanomedicine and healthcare

Synthetic macrocyclic host compounds can interact with suitable guest molecules via noncovalent interactions to form functional supramolecular systems. With the synergistic integration of the response of molecules and the unique properties at the nanoscale, nanoparticles functionalized with the host-guest supramolecular systems have shown great potentials for a broad range of applications in the fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology. In this review article, we focus on the applications of the nanoparticles functionalized with supramolecular host-guest systems in nanomedicine and healthcare, including therapeutic delivery, imaging, sensing and removal of harmful substances. A large number of examples are included to elucidate the working mechanisms, advantages, limitations and future developments of the nanoparticle-supramolecule systems in these applications.

Arylazopyrazoles as Light-Responsive Molecular Switches in Cyclodextrin-Based Supramolecular Systems

A simple and high yield synthesis of water-soluble arylazopyrazoles (AAPs) featuring superior photophysical properties is reported. The introduction of a carboxylic acid allows the diverse functionalization of AAPs. Based on structural modifications of the switching unit the photophysical properties of the AAPs could be tuned to obtain molecular switches with favorable photostationary states. Furthermore, AAPs form stable and light-responsive host-guest complexes with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). Our most efficient AAP shows binding affinities comparable to azobenzenes, but more effective switching and higher thermal stability of the Z-isomer. As a proof-of-principle, we investigated two CD-based supramolecular systems, containing either cyclodextrin vesicles (CDVs) or cyclodextrin-functionalized gold nanoparticles (CDAuNPs), which revealed excellent reversible, light-responsive aggregation and dispersion behavior. To conclude, AAPs have great potential to be incorporated as molecular switches in highly demanding and multivalent photoresponsive systems.

Photoswitchable fluorescent nanoparticles and their emerging applications

Although fluorescence offers ultrasensitivity, real-world applications of fluorescence techniques encounter many practical problems. As a noninvasive means to investigate biomolecular mechanisms, pathways, and regulations in living cells, the intrinsic heterogeneity and inherent complexity of biological samples always generates optical interferences such as autofluorescence. Therefore, innovative fluorescence technologies are needed to enhance measurement reliability while not compromising sensitivity. In this review, we present current strategies that use photoswitchable nanoparticles to address these real-world challenges. The unique feature in these photoswitchable nanoparticles is that fundamental molecular photoswitches are playing the critical role of fluorescence modulation rather than traditional methods like modulating the light source. As a result, new innovative technologies that have recently emerged include super-resolution imaging, frequency-domain imaging, antiphase dual-color correlation, etc. Some of these methods improve imaging resolution down to the nanometer level, while others boost the detection sensitivity by orders of magnitude and confirm the nanoparticle probes unambiguously. These enhancements, which are not possible with non-photoswitching molecular probes, are the central topics of this review.

Celebrating Soft Matter's 10th Anniversary: Approaches to program the time domain of self-assemblies

Self-regulating reconfigurable soft matter systems are of great interest for creating adaptive and active material properties. Such complex functionalities emerge from non-linear and interactive behavior in space and time as demonstrated by a plethora of dynamic, self-organizing biological structures (e.g., the cytoskeleton). In man-made self-assemblies, patterning of the spatial domain has advanced to creating hierarchical structures via precise molecular programming. However, orchestration of the time domain of self-assemblies is still in its infancy and lacks universal design principles. In this Emerging Area article we outline major strategies for programming the time domain of self-assemblies following the concepts of regulatory reaction networks, energy dissipation and kinetic control. Such concepts operate outside thermodynamic equilibrium and pave the way for temporally patterned, dynamic, and autonomously acting functional materials.

Kinetic Analysis as a Tool to Distinguish Pathway Complexity in Molecular Assembly: An Unexpected Outcome of Structures in Competition

While the sensitive dependence of the functional characteristics of self-assembled nanofibers on the molecular structure of their building blocks is well-known, the crucial influence of the dynamics of the assembly process is often overlooked. For natural protein-based fibrils, various aggregation mechanisms have been demonstrated, from simple primary nucleation to secondary nucleation and off-pathway aggregation. Similar pathway complexity has recently been described in synthetic supramolecular polymers and has been shown to be intimately linked to their morphology. We outline a general method to investigate the consequences of the presence of multiple assembly pathways, and show how kinetic analysis can be used to distinguish different assembly mechanisms. We illustrate our combined experimental and theoretical approach by studying the aggregation of chiral bipyridine-extended 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxamides (BiPy-1) in n-butanol as a model system. Our workflow consists of nonlinear least-squares analysis of steady-state spectroscopic measurements, which cannot provide conclusive mechanistic information but yields the equilibrium constants of the self-assembly process as constraints for subsequent kinetic analysis. Furthermore, kinetic nucleation-elongation models based on one and two competing pathways are used to interpret time-dependent spectroscopic measurements acquired using stop-flow and temperature-jump methods. Thus, we reveal that the sharp transition observed in the aggregation process of BiPy-1 cannot be explained by a single cooperative pathway, but can be described by a competitive two-pathway mechanism. This work provides a general tool for analyzing supramolecular polymerizations and establishing energetic landscapes, leading to mechanistic insights that at first sight may seem unexpected and counterintuitive.

Au nanoparticle scaffolds modulating intermolecular interactions among the conjugated azobenzenes chemisorbed on curved surfaces: tuning the kinetics of cis-trans isomerisation

π-π Intermolecular interactions among adjacent conjugated azobenzenes chemisorbed on (non-)flat Au surfaces can be tuned by varying the curvature of the Au nanoparticles. Here we show that such interactions rule the thermal cis-trans isomerization kinetics, towards a better control on the azobenzene bistability for its optimal integration as a responsive material.

Controlling Motion at the Nanoscale: Rise of the Molecular Machines

As our understanding and control of intra- and intermolecular interactions evolve, ever more complex molecular systems are synthesized and assembled that are capable of performing work or completing sophisticated tasks at the molecular scale. Commonly referred to as molecular machines, these dynamic systems comprise an astonishingly diverse class of motifs and are designed to respond to a plethora of actuation stimuli. In this Review, we outline the conditions that distinguish simple switches and rotors from machines and draw from a variety of fields to highlight some of the most exciting recent examples of opportunities for driven molecular mechanics. Emphasis is placed on the need for controllable and hierarchical assembly of these molecular components to display measurable effects at the micro-, meso-, and macroscales. As in Nature, this strategy will lead to dramatic amplification of the work performed via the collective action of many machines organized in linear chains, on functionalized surfaces, or in three-dimensional assemblies.

Dual Reaction-Based Multimodal Assay for Dopamine with High Sensitivity and Selectivity Using Functionalized Gold Nanoparticles

A simple and dual chemical reaction-based multimodal assay for dopamine with high sensitivity and selectivity using two types of functionalized gold nanoparticles (FB-AuNPs/NsNHS-AuNPs), i.e. fluorescein modified gold nanoparticles (FB-AuNPs) and Nile blue modified gold nanoparticles (NsNHS-AuNPs), was successfully fabricated. This assay for dopamine presents colorimetric visualization and double channel fluorescence enhancement at 515 and 665 nm. The absorbance and fluorescence changes were linearly proportional to the amounts of dopamine in the range of nanomolar scale (5-100 nM). The detection limits for absorbance and fluorescence were as low as 1.2 nM and 2.9 nM (S/N = 3), respectively. Furthermore, the extent application of this multimodal assay has been successfully demonstrated in human urine samples with high reliability and applicability, showing remarkable promise in diagnostic purposes.

Understanding and exploiting nanoparticles' intimacy with the blood vessel and blood

While the blood vessel is seldom the target tissue, almost all nanomedicine will interact with blood vessels and blood at some point of time along its life cycle in the human body regardless of their intended destination. Despite its importance, many bionanotechnologists do not feature endothelial cells (ECs), the blood vessel cells, or consider blood effects in their studies. Including blood vessel cells in the study can greatly increase our understanding of the behavior of any given nanomedicine at the tissue of interest or to understand side effects that may occur in vivo. In this review, we will first describe the diversity of EC types found in the human body and their unique behaviors and possibly how these important differences can implicate nanomedicine behavior. Subsequently, we will discuss about the protein corona derived from blood with foci on the physiochemical aspects of nanoparticles (NPs) that dictate the protein corona characteristics. We would also discuss about how NPs characteristics can affect uptake by the endothelium. Subsequently, mechanisms of how NPs could cross the endothelium to access the tissue of interest. Throughout the paper, we will share some novel nanomedicine related ideas and insights that were derived from the understanding of the NPs' interaction with the ECs. This review will inspire more exciting nanotechnologies that had accounted for the complexities of the real human body.

Gated Silica Mesoporous Materials in Sensing Applications

Silica mesoporous supports (SMSs) have a large specific surface area and volume and are particularly exciting vehicles for delivery applications. Such container-like structures can be loaded with numerous different chemical substances, such as drugs and reporters. Gated systems also contain addressable functions at openings of voids, and cargo delivery can be controlled on-command using chemical, biochemical or physical stimuli. Many of these gated SMSs have been applied for drug delivery. However, fewer examples of their use in sensing protocols have been reported. The approach of applying SMSs in sensing uses another concept-that of loading pores with a reporter and designing a capping mechanism that is selectively opened in the presence of a target analyte, which results in the delivery of the reporter. According to this concept, we provide herein a complete compilation of published examples of probes based on the use of capped SMSs for sensing. Examples for the detection of anions, cations, small molecules and biomolecules are provided. The diverse range of gated silica mesoporous materials presented here highlights their usefulness in recognition protocols.

Guest-induced supramolecular chirality in a ditopic azoprobe-cyclodextrin complex in water

We report a novel supramolecular chirality induced by the twisted structural change of two ditopic azoprobes (15C5-Azo-dpa) inside the chiral cavity of γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CyD) due to multi-point recognition of guest ions by 15C5-Azo-dpa molecules in water.

Oxime ligation on the surface of mesoporous silica nanoparticles

A versatile surface-functionalization strategy applicable to mesoporous silica nanoparticles, which could potentially serve as drug delivery vehicles, is described that makes use of alkoxyamine tethers on the surface of the nanoparticles. A wide variety of carbonyl compounds can be attached readily to these tethers under the mild conditions of oxime ether formation, simply by incubating the chemically modified mesoporous silica nanoparticles with aldehydes or ketones in water.

Negative differential resistance devices by using N-doped graphene nanoribbons

Recently, extensive efforts have been devoted to the investigations of negative differential resistance (NDR) behavior in graphene. Here, by performing fully self-consistent density functional theory calculations combined with non-equilibrium Green's function technique, we investigate the transport properties of three molecules from conjugated molecule, one-dimension alkane chain, and single molecule magnet, which are sandwiched between two N-doped zigzag and armchair graphene nanoribbons (GNRs). We observe robust NDR effect in all examined molecular junctions including benzene, alkane, and planar four-coordinated Fe complex. Through the analyses of the calculated electronic structures and the bias-dependent transmission coefficients, we find that the narrow density of states of N-doped GNRs and the bias-dependent effective coupling between the discrete frontier molecular orbitals and the subbands of N-doped GNRs are responsible for the observed NDR phenomenon. These theoretical findings imply that N-doped GNRs hold great potential for building NDR devices based on various molecules.

Synthesis of Conducting Polymer-Metal Nanoparticle Hybrids Exploiting RAFT Polymerization

The direct covalent attachment of conducting polymers (CP) to nanoparticles (NP) to form CP-NP nanohybrids is of great interest for optoelectronic device applications. Hybrids formed by covalently anchoring CP to NP, rather than traditional blending or bilayer approaches, is highly desirable. CP-NP nanohybrids have increased interfacial surface area between the two components, facilitating rapid exciton diffusion at the p-n heterojunction. These materials take advantage of the facile solution processability, lightweight characteristics, flexibility, and mechanical strength associated with CPs, and the broad spectral absorption, photostability, and high charge carrier mobility of NPs. We demonstrate the ability to polymerize a hole transporting (HT) polymer utilizing reversible-addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and its subsequent rapid aminolysis to yield a thiol-terminated HT polymer. Subsequent facile attachment to gold (Au) and silver (Ag) NPs and cadmium selenide (CdSe) quantum dots (QDs), to form a number of CP-NP systems is demonstrated and characterized. CP-NP nanohybrids show broad spectral absorptions ranging from UV through visible to the near IR, and their facile synthesis and purification could allow for large scale industrial applications.

Supramolecular nanoassemblies of an amphiphilic porphyrin-cyclodextrin conjugate and their morphological transition from vesicle to network

An amphiphilic compound, 5-(4'-dodecyloxyphenyl)-10,15,20-tri(permethyl-β-CD)-modified Zn(II)-porphyrin (1; β-CD = β-cyclodextrin), was synthesized by means of the click reaction of an alkylated Zn-porphyrin derivative with 6-deoxy-6-azidopermethyl-β-CD. The complexation between 1 and tetrasodium tetraphenylporphyrintetrasulfonate (5) with different molar ratios led to the formation of two distinctly different nanoarchitectures, which were proven to be vesicle and network aggregates, respectively, by using dynamic light scattering, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. On the basis of the results of the time-dependent TEM studies, fluorescence, and NMR spectroscopic measurements, we have determined that the mechanism of the morphology transition from vesicles to networks is controlled by the stepwise complexation of 1 with 5. Furthermore, these supramolecular nanoarchitectures show the controlled- release property of doxorubicin as potential candidates for drug delivery.

Photoinduced guest transformation promotes translocation of guest from hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin to cucurbit[7]uril

Photolysis of HP-β-CD-1 triggers trans-to-cis isomerization, cyclization, aromatization of 1 to 3, and finally translocation to form CB[7]-3.
