What is the nature of the uranium(iii)-arene bond?

Complexes of the form [U(η6-arene)(BH4)3] where arene = C6H6; C6H5Me; C6H3-1,3,5-R3 (R = Et, iPr, tBu, Ph); C6Me6; and triphenylene (C6H4)3 were investigated towards an understanding of the nature of the uranium-arene interaction. Density functional theory (DFT) shows the interaction energy reflects the interplay between higher energy electron rich π-systems which drive electrostatic contributions, and lower energy electron poor π-systems which give rise to larger orbital contributions. The interaction is weak in all cases, which is consistent with the picture that emerges from a topological analysis of the electron density where metrics indicative of covalency show limited dependence on the nature of the ligand - the interaction is predominantly electrostatic in nature. Complete active space natural orbital analyses reveal low occupancy U-arene π-bonding interactions dominate in all cases, while δ-bonding interactions are only found with high-symmetry and electron-rich C6Me6. Finally, both DFT and multireference calculations on a reduced, formally U(ii), congener, [U(C6Me6)(BH4)3]-, suggests the electronic structure (S = 1 or 2), and hence metal oxidation state, of such a species cannot be deduced from structural features such as arene distortion alone. We show that arene geometry strongly depends on the spin-state of the complex, but that in both spin-states the complex is best described as U(iii) with an arene-centred radical.

Silver(I) complexes containing antifungal azoles: significant improvement of the anti-Candida potential of the azole drug after its coordination to the silver(I) ion

Inspired by the emergence of resistance to currently available antifungal therapy and by the great potential of metal complexes for the treatment of various diseases, we synthesized three new silver(I) complexes containing clinically used antifungal azoles as ligands, [Ag(ecz)2]SbF6 (1, ecz is econazole), {[Ag(vcz)2]SbF6}n (2, vcz is voriconazole), and [Ag(ctz)2]SbF6 (3, ctz is clotrimazole), and investigated their antimicrobial properties. The synthesized complexes were characterized by mass spectrometry, IR, UV-vis and 1H NMR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In the mononuclear complexes 1 and 3 with ecz and ctz, respectively, the silver(I) ion has the expected linear geometry, in which the azoles are monodentately coordinated to this metal center through the N3 imidazole nitrogen atom. In contrast, the vcz-containing complex 2 has a polymeric structure in the solid state in which the silver(I) ions are coordinated by four nitrogen atoms in a distorted tetrahedral geometry. DFT calculations were done to predict the most favorable structures of the studied complexes in DMSO solution. All the studied silver(I) complexes have shown excellent antifungal and good to moderate antibacterial activities with minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values in the ranges of 0.01-27.1 and 2.61-47.9 μM on the selected panel of fungi and bacteria, respectively. Importantly, the complexes 1-3 have exhibited a significantly improved antifungal activity compared to the free azoles, with the most pronounced effect observed in the case of complex 2 compared to the parent vcz against Candida glabrata with an increase of activity by five orders of magnitude. Moreover, the silver(I)-azole complexes 2 and 3 significantly inhibited the formation of C. albicans hyphae and biofilms at the subinhibitory concentration of 50% MIC. To investigate the impact of the complex 3 more thoroughly on Candida pathogenesis, its effect on the adherence of C. albicans to A549 cells (human adenocarcinoma alveolar basal epithelial cells), as an initial step of the invasion of host cells, was studied.

Cooperative small molecule activation by apolar and weakly polar bonds through the lens of a suitable computational protocol

Small molecule activation processes are central in chemical research and cooperativity is a valuable tool for the fine-tuning of the efficiency of these reactions. In this contribution, we discuss recent and remarkable examples in which activation processes are mediated by bimetallic compounds featuring apolar or weakly polar metal-metal bonds. Relevant experimental breakthroughs are thoroughly analyzed from a computational perspective. We highlight how the rational and non-trivial application of selected computational approaches not only allows rationalization of the observed reactivities but also inferring of general principles applicable to activation processes, such as the breakdown of the structure-reactivity relationship in carbon dioxide activation in a cooperative framework. We finally provide a simple yet unbiased computational protocol to study these reactions, which can support experimental advances aimed at expanding the range of applications of apolar and weakly polar bonds as catalysts for small molecule activation.

Tuning the Softness of the Pendant Arms and the Polyazamacrocyclic Backbone to Chelate the 203Pb/212Pb Theranostic Pair

A series of macrocyclic ligands were considered for the chelation of Pb2+: 1,4,7,10-tetrakis[2-(methylsulfanyl)ethyl]-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (DO4S), 1,4,7-tris[2-(methylsulfanyl)ethyl]-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (DO3S), 1,4,7-tris[2-(methylsulfanyl)ethyl]-10-acetamido-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (DO3SAm), 1,7-bis[2-(methylsulfanyl)ethyl]-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-4,10-diacetic acid (DO2A2S), 1,5,9-tris[2-(methylsulfanyl)ethyl]-1,5,9-triazacyclododecane (TACD3S), 1,4,7,10-tetrakis[2-(methylsulfanyl)ethyl]-1,4,7,10-tetrazacyclotridecane (TRI4S), and 1,4,8,11-tetrakis[2-(methylsulfanyl)ethyl]-1,4,8,11-tetrazacyclotetradecane (TE4S). The equilibrium, the acid-mediated dissociation kinetics, and the structural properties of the Pb2+ complexes formed by these chelators were examined by UV-Visible and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies, combined with potentiometry and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The obtained results indicated that DO4S, DO3S, DO3SAm, and DO2A2S were able to efficiently chelate Pb2+ and that the most suitable macrocyclic scaffold for Pb2+ is 1,4,7,10-tetrazacyclododecane. NMR spectroscopy gave insights into the solution structures of the Pb2+ complexes, and 1H-207Pb interactions confirmed the involvement of S and/or O donors in the metal coordination sphere. Highly fluxional solution behavior was discovered when Pb2+ was coordinated to symmetric ligands (i.e., DO4S and DO2A2S) while the introduction of structural asymmetry in DO3S and DO3SAm slowed down the intramolecular dynamics. The ligand ability to chelate [203Pb]Pb2+ under highly dilute reaction conditions was explored through radiolabeling experiments. While DO4S and DO3S possessed modest performance, DO3SAm and DO2A2S demonstrated high complexation efficiency under mild reaction conditions (pH = 7, 5 min reaction time). The [203Pb]Pb2+ complexes' integrity in human serum over 24 h was appreciably good for [203Pb][Pb(DO4S)]2+ (80 ± 5%) and excellent for [203Pb][Pb(DO3SAm)]2+ (93 ± 1%) and [203Pb][Pb(DO2A2S)] (94 ± 1%). These results reveal the promise of DO2A2S and DO3SAm as chelators in cutting-edge theranostic [203/212Pb]Pb2+ radiopharmaceuticals.

Nonlinear and Emissive {[MIII(CN)6]3-···Polyresorcinol} (M = Fe, Co, Cr) Cocrystals Exhibiting an Ultralow Frequency Raman Response

Optically active functional noncentrosymmetric architectures might be achieved through the combination of molecules with inscribed optical responses and species of dedicated tectonic character. Herein, we present the new series of noncentrosymmetric cocrystal salt solvates (PPh4)3[M(CN)6](L)n·msolv (M = Cr(III), Fe(III), Co(III); L = polyresorcinol coformers, multiple hydrogen bond donors: 3,3',5,5'-tetrahydroxy-1,19-biphenyl, DiR, n = 2, or 5'-(3,5-dihydroxyphenyl)-3,3″,5,5″-tetrahydroxy-1,19:3',1″-terphenyl, TriRB, n = 1) denoted as MDiR and MTriRB, respectively. The hydrogen-bonded subnetworks {[M(CN)6]3-;Ln}∞ of dmp, neb, or dia topology are formed through structural matching between building blocks within supramolecular cis-bis(chelate)-like {[M(CN)6]3-;(H2L)2(HL)2} or tris(chelate)-like {[M(CN)6]3-;(H2L)3} fragments. The quantum-chemical analysis demonstrates the mixed electrostatic and covalent character of these interactions, with their strength clearly enhanced due to the negative charge of the hydrogen bond acceptor metal complex. The corresponding interaction energy is also dependent on the geometry of the contact and size matching of its components, rotational degree of freedom and extent of the π-electron system of the coformer, and overall fit to the molecular surroundings. Symmetry of the crystal lattices is correlated with the local symmetry of coformers and {complex;(coformer)n} hydrogen-bonded motifs characterized by the absence of the inversion center and mirror plane. All compounds reveal second-harmonic generation activity and photoluminescence diversified by individual UV-vis spectral characteristics of the components, and interesting low-frequency Raman scattering spectra within the subterahertz spectroscopic domain. Vibrational (infrared/Raman), UV-vis electronic absorption (experimental and calculated), and 57Fe Mössbauer spectra together with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) data are provided for the complete description of our systems.

Red-Light Activation of a Microtubule Polymerization Inhibitor via Amide Functionalization of the Ruthenium Photocage

Photoactivated chemotherapy (PACT) is a promising cancer treatment modality that kills cancer cells via photochemical uncaging of a cytotoxic drug. Most ruthenium-based photocages used for PACT are activated with blue or green light, which penetrates sub-optimally into tumor tissues. Here, we report amide functionalization as a tool to fine-tune the toxicity and excited states of a terpyridine-based ruthenium photocage. Due to conjugation of the amide group with the terpyridine π system in the excited state, the absorption of red light (630 nm) increased 8-fold, and the photosubstitution rate rose 5-fold. In vitro, red light activation triggered inhibition of tubulin polymerization, which led to apoptotic cell death both in normoxic (21 % O2 ) and hypoxic (1 % O2 ) cancer cells. In vivo, red light irradiation of tumor-bearing mice demonstrated significant tumor volume reduction (45 %) with improved biosafety, thereby demonstrating the clinical potential of this compound.

Paramagnetic Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Shifts for Triplet Systems and Beyond with Modern Relativistic Density Functional Methods

An efficient framework for the calculation of paramagnetic NMR (pNMR) shifts within exact two-component (X2C) theory and (current-dependent) density functional theory (DFT) up to the class of local hybrid functionals (LHFs) is presented. Generally, pNMR shifts for systems with more than one unpaired electron depend on the orbital shielding contribution and a temperature-dependent term. The latter includes zero-field splitting (ZFS), hyperfine coupling (HFC), and the g-tensor. For consistency, we calculate these three tensors at the same level of theory, i.e., using scalar-relativistic X2C augmented with spin-orbit perturbation theory. Results for pNMR chemical shifts of transition-metal complexes reveal that this X2C-DFT framework can yield good results for both the shifts and the individual tensor contributions of metallocenes and related systems, especially if the HFC constant is large. For small HFC constants, the relative error is often large, and sometimes the sign may be off. 4d and 5d complexes with more complicated structures demonstrate the limitations of a fully DFT-based approach. Additionally, a Co-based complex with a very large ZFS and pronounced multireference character is not well described. Here, a hybrid DFT-multireference framework is necessary for accurate results. Our results show that X2C is sufficient to describe relativistic effects and computationally cheaper than a fully relativistic approach. Thus, it allows use of large basis sets for converged HFCs. Overall, current-dependent meta-generalized gradient approximations and LHFs show some potential; however, the currently available functionals leave a lot to be desired, and the predictive power is limited.

Infrared Spectroscopy of [M(CO2)n]+ (M = Ca, Sr, and Ba; n = 1-4) in the Gas Phase: Solvation-Induced Electron Transfer and Activation of CO2

Cationic complexes of heavy alkaline earth metal and carbon dioxide [M(CO2)n]+ (M = Ca, Sr, and Ba) are produced by a laser vaporization-supersonic expansion ion source in the gas phase and are studied by infrared photodissociation spectroscopy in conjunction with quantum chemistry calculations. For the n = 1 complexes, the metal-ligand binding arises primarily from the electrostatic interaction with the CO2 ligand bound to the metal (+I) center in an end-on η1-O fashion. The more highly coordinated complexes [M(CO2)n]+ with n ≥ 2 are characterized to involve a [M2+(CO2-)] core ion with the CO2- ligand bound to the metal (+II) center in a bidentate η2-O, O manner. The activation of CO2 in forming a bent CO2- moiety occurs via solvation-induced metal cation-ligand electron transfer reactions. Bonding analyses reveal that the attractive forces between M2+ and CO2- in the core cation come mainly from electrostatic attraction, but the contribution of covalent orbital interactions should not be underestimated. The atomic orbitals of metal dications that are engaged in the orbital interactions are ns and (n - 1)d orbitals.

Conformational Effect of Catechol-Terephthalonitrile Emitters Leading to Ambient Violet Phosphorescence

Organic ambient violet phosphorescent (AVP) materials are of great interest due to their involvement of high energy and longer-lived triplet excitons. Here, we show three fused ring functionalized donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D/D-A-D') emitters (BPT1-BPT3), in which two catechol-based donors (3,4-dihydroxybenzophenone, catechol, or 3,5-ditert-butylcatechol) are covalently fused to the terephthalonitrile acceptor via four O-C single bonds. Spectroscopic analysis revealed that all the molecules show AVP (∼390-394 nm, τAVP = 73-101 μs) with phosphorescence quantum yields (ϕP) of 1.8-27.4% due to low singlet-triplet gaps (0.036-0.046 eV) and conformational effects. BPT3 with bulky tert-butyl groups increases AVP (ϕP = 27.4%). Quantum chemistry calculations reveal flat (F1) and twisted (F2) conformers (ground state) with a low energy difference (∼4-5 kcal/mol) for all molecules; the F1 conformer is responsible for efficient AVP, while weak blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence with longer-lived delayed components is realized from the F2 conformer. This approach may provide important clues for the design of high-energy organic phosphorescent materials.

Influence of Peripheral Alkyl Groups on Junction Configurations in Single-Molecule Electronics

The addition of a lateral alkyl chain is a well-known strategy to reduce π-stacked ensembles of molecules in solution, with the intention to minimize the interactions between the molecules' backbones. In this paper, we study whether this concept generalizes to single-molecule junctions by using a combination of mechanically controllable break junction (MCBJ) measurements and clustering-based data analysis with two small series of model compounds decorated with various bulky groups. The systematic study suggests that introducing alkyl side chains also favors the formation of electrode-molecule configurations that are not observed in their absence, thereby inducing broadening of the conductance peak in the one-dimensional histograms. Thus, the introduction of alkyl chains in aromatic compounds for molecular electronics must be carefully designed and optimized for the specific purpose, balancing between increased solubility and the possibility of additional junction configurations.

Basis Set Superposition Errors Are Partly Basis Set Imbalances

When calculating fragment interaction energies by electronic structure methods employing medium-sized atom-centered basis sets, it is often observed that the effect is systematically overestimated. The common interpretation is that the systematic error arises because the basis set for the complex is more complete than for the isolated fragments, and this is denoted basis set superposition errors. It has been observed, however, that the interaction energy in some cases is underestimated, which defies the interpretation in terms of basis set completeness, and instead suggests that the effect partly is due to basis set imbalance. The imbalance can be removed by explicit optimization of the basis sets for each structure, and it is shown that this to a significant extent reduces the systematic overestimation attributed to basis set superposition error.

Stabilization of sp-Hybridized Nitrogen Cation by Lewis Acid-Base Complex Formation with Intramolecular Iodine

Here we show that the sp-hybridized nitrogen cation is strongly stabilized by a peri-iodine substituent in the tetralone system. The cation is captured by anionic species such as CF3 CO2 - , affording hypervalent iodine(III) compounds with a short nitrogen-iodine (N-I) bond, in which the cation serves as a Lewis acid. Notably, the O-I bond of the O-trifluoroacetate or O-acetate is intrinsically weaker than the N-I bond due to its more ionic character and is further weakened by protonation in trifluoroacetic acid. As a result, the oxygen ligand can dissociate in the presence of a Brønsted acid, affording a I+ cation intermediate that retains the N-I bond. We isolated the cation as the tetrafluoroborate, and characterized it experimentally by 1 H NMR spectroscopy and X-ray structure analysis, and theoretically by means of DFT calculation. The results suggest that the N-I bonded cation is intrinsically stable, and is weakly coordinated with water and the BF4 counter anion or trifluoroacetate anion. This cation can be employed as a reagent for α-oxidation of ketones.

Quo Vadis CO2 Activation: Catalytic Reduction of CO2 to Methanol Using Aluminum and Gallium/Carbon-based Ambiphiles

We report on so-called "hidden FLPs" (FLP: frustrated Lewis pair) consisting of a phosphorus ylide featuring a group 13 fragment in the ortho position of a phenyl ring scaffold to form five-membered ring structures. Although the formation of the Lewis acid/base adducts was observed in the solid state, most of the title compounds readily react with carbon dioxide to provide stable insertion products. Strikingly, 0.3-3.0 mol% of the reported aluminum and gallium/carbon-based ambiphiles catalyze the reduction of CO2 to methanol with satisfactory high selectivity and yields using pinacol borane as stoichiometric reduction equivalent. Comprehensive computational studies provided valuable mechanistic insights and shed more light on activity differences.

Stability of the protactinium(V) mono-oxo cation probed by first-principle calculations

This study explores the distinctive behavior of protactinium (Z=91) within the actinide series. In contrast to neighboring elements like uranium or plutonium, protactinium in the pentavalent state diverges by not forming the typical dioxo protactinyl moiety PaO2 + in aqueous phase. Instead, it manifests as a monooxo PaO3+ cation or a Pa5+ . Employing first-principle calculations with implicit and explicit solvation, we investigate two stoichiometrically equivalent neutral complexes: PaO(OH)2 (X)(H2 O) and Pa(OH)4 (X), where X represents various monodentate and bidentate ligands. Calculating the Gibbs free energy for the reaction PaO(OH)2 (X)(H2 O)→Pa(OH)4 (X), we find that the PaO(OH)2 (X)(H2 O) complex is stabilized with Cl- , Br- , I- , NCS- , NO3 - , and SO4 2- ligands, while it is not favored with OH- , F- , and C2 O4 2- ligands. Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) and Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) methods reveal the Pa mono-oxo bond as a triple bond, with significant contributions from the 5f and 6d shells. Covalency of the Pa mono-oxo bond increases with certain ligands, such as Cl- , Br- , I- , NCS- , and NO3 - . These findings elucidate protactinium's unique chemical attributes and provide insights into the conditions supporting the stability of relevant complexes.

Electron-beam-promoted fullerene dimerization in nanotubes: insights from DFT computations

Fullerene dimerization inside a peapod is analyzed at DFT level by characterizing the stationary points and deriving the energy profile of the initial and reversible process named phase 1. We find that the barriers for the radical cation mechanism are significantly lower than those found for the neutral pathway. The peapod is mainly providing one-dimensional confinement for the reaction to take place in a more efficient way. Car-Parrinello metadynamics simulations provide hints on structures for the initial steps of the irreversible phase 2 where bond formation and breaking lead to important structural reorganizations within the coalescence process.

Enantioselective Aziridination of Unactivated Terminal Alkenes Using a Planar Chiral Rh(III) Indenyl Catalyst

Chiral aziridines are important structural motifs found in natural products and various target molecules. They serve as versatile building blocks for the synthesis of chiral amines. While advances in catalyst design have enabled robust methods for enantioselective aziridination of activated olefins, simple and abundant alkyl-substituted olefins pose a significant challenge. In this work, we introduce a novel approach utilizing a planar chiral rhodium indenyl catalyst to facilitate the enantioselective aziridination of unactivated alkenes. This transformation exhibits a remarkable degree of functional group tolerance and displays excellent chemoselectivity favoring unactivated alkenes over their activated counterparts, delivering a wide range of enantioenriched high-value chiral aziridines. Computational studies unveil a stepwise aziridination mechanism in which alkene migratory insertion plays a central role. This process results in the formation of a strained four-membered metallacycle and serves as both the enantio- and rate-determining steps in the overall reaction.

Addressing electronic and dynamical evolution of molecules and molecular clusters: DFTB simulations of energy relaxation in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

We present a review of the capabilities of the density functional based Tight Binding (DFTB) scheme to address the electronic relaxation and dynamical evolution of molecules and molecular clusters following energy deposition via either collision or photoabsorption. The basics and extensions of DFTB for addressing these systems and in particular their electronic states and their dynamical evolution are reviewed. Applications to PAH molecules and clusters, carbonaceous systems of major interest in astrochemical/astrophysical context, are reported. A variety of processes are examined and discussed such as collisional hydrogenation, fast collisional processes and induced electronic and charge dynamics, collision-induced fragmentation, photo-induced fragmentation, relaxation in high electronic states, electronic-to-vibrational energy conversion and statistical versus non-statistical fragmentation. This review illustrates how simulations may help to unravel different relaxation mechanisms depending on various factors such as the system size, specific electronic structure or excitation conditions, in close connection with experiments.

Snap-shots of cluster growth: structure and properties of a Zintl ion with an Fe3 core, [Fe3Sn18]4

The endohedral Zintl-ion cluster [Fe3Sn18]4- contains a linear Fe3 core with short Fe-Fe bond lengths of 2.4300(9) Å. The ground state is a septet, with significant σ and π contributions to the Fe-Fe bonds. The Sn18 cage is made up of two partially fused Sn9 fragments, and is structurally intermediate between [Ni2CdSn18]6-, where the fragments are clearly separated and [Pd2Sn18]4-, where they are completely fused. It therefore represents an intermediate stage in cluster growth. Analysis of the electronic structure suggests that the presence of the linear Fe-Fe-Fe unit is an important factor in directing reactions towards fusion of the two Sn9 units rather than the alternative of oligomerization via exo bond formation.

Dimensionally Stable Anion Exchange Membranes Based on Macromolecular-Cross-Linked Poly(arylene piperidinium) for Water Electrolysis

The advancement of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) with superior ionic conductivity has been greatly hindered due to the inherent "trade-off" between membrane swelling and ionic conductivity. To resolve this dilemma, macromolecular covalently cross-linked C-FPVBC-x AEMs were fabricated by combining partially functionalized ether-bond-free polystyrene (FPVBC) with poly(arylene piperidinium). The results from atomic force microscopy reveal that an increase in the ratio of FPVBC promotes the fabrication of microphase separation morphology, resulting in a high ionic conductivity of 40.15 mS cm-1 (30 °C) for the C-FPVBC-1.7 membrane. Molecular dynamics simulations further examine the ionic conduction effect of cross-linked AEMs. Besides, the unique cross-linking structure significantly improves mechanical and alkaline stability. After treatment in 1 M KOH at 50 °C for 1200 h, the C-FPVBC-1.7 membrane shows only a 6.9% decrease in conductivity. The C-FPVBC-1.7 AEM-based water electrolyzer achieves a high current density of 890 mA cm-2 at 2.4 V (80 °C) and maintains good stability, enduring over 100 h at 100 mA cm-2 (50 °C). These results demonstrate the significant potential of macromolecularly cross-linked AEMs for practical applications in water electrolysis.

Elucidating the Electronic Nature of Rh-based Paddlewheel Catalysts from 103 Rh NMR Chemical Shifts: Insights from Quantum Mechanical Calculations

The tremendous importance of dirhodium paddlewheel complexes for asymmetric catalysis is largely the result of an empirical optimization of the chiral ligand sphere about the bimetallic core. It was only recently that a H(C)Rh triple resonance 103 Rh NMR experiment provided the long-awaited opportunity to examine - with previously inconceivable accuracy - how variation of the ligands impacts on the electronic structure of such catalysts. The recorded effects are dramatic: formal replacement of only one out of eight O-atoms surrounding the metal centers in a dirhodium tetracarboxylate by an N-atom results in a shielding of the corresponding Rh-site of no less than 1000 ppm. The current paper provides the theoretical framework that allows this and related experimental observations made with a set of 19 representative rhodium complexes to be interpreted. In line with symmetry considerations, it is shown that the shielding tensor responds only to the donor ability of the equatorial ligands along the perpendicular principal axis. Axial ligands, in contrast, have no direct effect on shielding but may come into play via the electronicc i s ${cis}$ -effect that they exert onto the neighboring equatorial sites. On top of these fundamental interactions, charge redistribution within the core as well as the electronict r a n s ${trans}$ -effect of ligands of different donor strengths is reflected in the recorded 103 Rh NMR shifts.

A one-pot reduction route to bimetallic manganese 1,8-naphthyridine complexes

Reaction of the dinucleating ligand 2,7-bis(6-methyl-2-pyridyl)-1,8-naphthyridine (MeL) with the MnI and MnII precursors MnBr(CO)5 and MnCl2 resulted in the formation of the monometallic complexes [MnBr(CO)3(MeL)] (1) and [MnCl2(MeL)] (3). In both cases, formation of bimetallic manganese complexes could be achieved by reduction with KC8, yielding the carbonyl-bridged complex [Mn2(CO)6(MeL)] (2) and the helicate complex [Mn2(MeL)2] (4), respectively. EPR results demonstrate that 4 represents a novel, weakly antiferromagnetically coupled homovalent dimer (J = -0.85 cm-1). The two formally Mn0 ions are both high spin (S = 3/2) and exhibit a zero-field splitting of ≈1 cm-1, suggesting reduction of the complex is substantially ligand centered, and may be better described as a MnII complex coupled to two open shell singlet ligands [MnII2(MeL2-)2]. X-ray crystallography, UV-Vis spectroscopy and DFT analysis support this finding.

Photocatalytic aerobic oxidation of C(sp3)-H bonds

In modern industries, the aerobic oxidation of C(sp3)-H bonds to achieve the value-added conversion of hydrocarbons requires high temperatures and pressures, which significantly increases energy consumption and capital investment. The development of a light-driven strategy, even under natural sunlight and ambient air, is therefore of great significance. Here we develop a series of hetero-motif molecular junction photocatalysts containing two bifunctional motifs. With these materials, the reduction of O2 and oxidation of C(sp3)-H bonds can be effectively accomplished, thus realizing efficient aerobic oxidation of C(sp3)-H bonds in e.g., toluene and ethylbenzene. Especially for ethylbenzene oxidation reactions, excellent catalytic capacity (861 mmol g cat-1) is observed. In addition to the direct oxidation of C(sp3)-H bonds, CeBTTD-A can also be applied to other types of aerobic oxidation reactions highlighting their potential for industrial applications.

Coordination Chemistry of Bis-Cyclic Alkyl(Amino) Carbene (cAAC)-Supported Di-Phosphorus (P2 ): An Efficient Route to Donor Base-Stabilized Elusive Di-Phosphorus-Monoxide(P2 O)-Gold Complex

The stability and reactivity studies of heavier di-atomic group-15 congeners of alkynes, e. g., the di-phosphorus (P≡P) compounds have been the topic of huge interest because of their contrasting transient properties and lower stability compared to those of the stable molecular di-nitrogen (N≡N). Herein, we depict the reactivity studies of the bis-cAAC-stabilized di-phosphorus (P2 ) having an inversely polarized phosphaalkene nature featuring the C=P double bonds with Au(I)Cl. Both the mono-, and the di-aurated phosphaalkenes with the formulae [(Me2 -cAAC=P)2 (AuCl)] (2), and [(Me2 -cAAC=P)2 (AuCl)2 ] (3), respectively have been isolated in the solid state. Moreover, for the first time, we have been able to isolate the cAAC-stabilized tetra-aurated elusive di-phosphorus-monoxide (P2 O) with the formula [(Cy-cAAC=P)-O-(P=cAAC-Cy)(AuCl)4 ] (5) in presence of oxygen. Complexes 2-3, 5 have been structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, and further studied by NMR spectroscopy. Our findings reveal significant elongation of the CcAAC -P bonds in 2-3, 5, and the presence of aurophilic interaction in 5. Quantum chemical calculations, including density functional theory (DFT), and energy decomposition analysis coupled with natural orbitals for chemical valence (EDA-NOCV) have been performed to study the electron densities distribution and nature of bonding in 2-3, 5.

Metal Influence on Cyaphide-Azide 1,3-Dipolar Cycloaddition Reactions: Aromaticity and Activation Strain

The factors governing 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions involving C≡P-containing compounds are computationally explored in detail using quantum chemical tools. To this end, the parent process involving tBuN3 and tBuCP is analyzed and compared to the analogous reaction involving organometallic cyaphide complexes (metal=Au, Pt, Ge, Mg), in order to understand the role of the metal fragment in such transformations. It is found that while the metal fragment does not significantly influence the aromaticity of the corresponding concerted transition states or the regioselectivity of the transformation, it may modify the reactivity of the cyaphide complexes (i. e. Ge and Mg cyaphide complexes are comparatively more reactive). The computed reactivity trends and the factors behind the regioselectivity of the cycloaddition reaction are quantitatively analyzed with the help of the activation strain model in combination with the energy decomposition analysis method.

Comprehensive Investigation of Cu2+ Adsorption from Wastewater Using Olive-Waste-Derived Adsorbents: Experimental and Molecular Insights

This study investigates the efficacy of adsorbents from locally sourced olive waste-encompassing olive skins, leaves, and pits, recovered from the initial centrifugation of olives (OWP)-and a composite with sodium alginate (OWPSA) for the removal of Cu2+ ions from synthetic wastewater. Experimental analyses conducted at room temperature, with an initial Cu2+ concentration of 50 mg/L and a solid/liquid ratio of 1 g/L, showed that the removal efficiencies were approximately 79.54% and 94.54% for OWP and OWPSA, respectively, highlighting the positive impact of alginate on adsorption capacity. Utilizing statistical physics isotherm models, particularly the single-layer model coupled to real gas (SLMRG), allowed us to robustly fit the experimental data, providing insights into the adsorption mechanisms. Thermodynamic parameters affirmed the spontaneity and endothermic nature of the processes. Adsorption kinetics were interpreted effectively using the pseudo-second-order (PSO) model. Molecular modeling investigations, including the conductor-like screening model for real solvents (COSMO-RS), density functional theory (DFT), and atom-in-molecule (AIM) analysis, unveiled intricate molecular interactions among the adsorbent components-cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and alginate-and the pollutant Cu2+, confirming their physically interactive nature. These findings emphasize the synergistic application of experimental and theoretical approaches, providing a comprehensive understanding of copper adsorption dynamics at the molecular level. This methodology holds promise for unraveling intricate processes across various adsorbent materials in wastewater treatment applications.

Developing correlation-consistent numeric atom-centered orbital basis sets for krypton: Applications in RPA-based correlated calculations

Localized atomic orbitals are the preferred basis set choice for large-scale explicit correlated calculations, and high-quality hierarchical correlation-consistent basis sets are a prerequisite for correlated methods to deliver numerically reliable results. At present, numeric atom-centered orbital (NAO) basis sets with valence correlation consistency (VCC), designated as NAO-VCC-nZ, are only available for light elements from hydrogen (H) to argon (Ar) [Zhang et al., New J. Phys. 15, 123033 (2013)]. In this work, we extend this series by developing NAO-VCC-nZ basis sets for krypton (Kr), a prototypical element in the fourth row of the periodic table. We demonstrate that NAO-VCC-nZ basis sets facilitate the convergence of electronic total-energy calculations using the Random Phase Approximation (RPA), which can be used together with a two-point extrapolation scheme to approach the complete basis set limit. Notably, the Basis Set Superposition Error (BSSE) associated with the newly generated NAO basis sets is minimal, making them suitable for applications where BSSE correction is either cumbersome or impractical to do. After confirming the reliability of NAO basis sets for Kr, we proceed to calculate the Helmholtz free energy for Kr crystal at the theoretical level of RPA plus renormalized single excitation correction. From this, we derive the pressure-volume (P-V) diagram, which shows excellent agreement with the latest experimental data. Our work demonstrates the capability of correlation-consistent NAO basis sets for heavy elements, paving the way toward numerically reliable correlated calculations for bulk materials.

An Unusual Macrocyclic Hexamer of an Iso-Tellurazole N-Oxide Featuring CTe… O Chalcogen Bonds is Formed by κ6 -O Complexation to Fe(II) and Ni(II)

Studies of the supramolecular chemistry of iso-tellurazole N-oxides have been confined to non-polar media until now. To overcome that limitation, an iso-tellurazole N-oxide was derivatized with a primary alcohol group; the compound is soluble in polar solvents and stable in acidic to neutral aqueous media. Nickel (II) and iron (II) form macrocyclic complexes with six molecules of that iso-tellurazole N-oxide in a hitherto not-observed macrocyclic arrangement defined by CTe⋅⋅⋅O chalcogen bonds and κ6 -O bound to the metal ion. This behaviour is in sharp contrast with the κn -Te (n=1,2,4) complexes formed by soft metal ions.

Multiscale Frozen Density Embedding/Molecular Mechanics Approach for Simulating Magnetic Response Properties of Solvated Systems

We present a three-layer hybrid quantum mechanical/quantum embedding/molecular mechanics approach for calculating nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) shieldings and J-couplings of molecular systems in solution. The model is based on the frozen density embedding (FDE) and polarizable fluctuating charges (FQ) and fluctuating dipoles (FQFμ) force fields and permits the accurate ab initio description of short-range nonelectrostatic interactions by means of the FDE shell and cost-effective treatment of long-range electrostatic interactions through the polarizable force field FQ(Fμ). Our approach's accuracy and potential are demonstrated by studying NMR spectra of Brooker's merocyanine in aqueous and nonaqueous solutions.

Transition Metal Behavior of Heavier Alkaline Earth Elements in Doped Monocyclic and Tubular Boron Clusters

Quantum chemical calculations are carried out to design highly symmetric-doped boron clusters by employing the transition metal behavior of heavier alkaline earth (Ae = Ca, Sr, and Ba) metals. Following an electron counting rule, a set of monocyclic and tubular boron clusters capped by two heavier Ae metals were tested, which leads to the highly symmetric Ae2B8, Ae2B18, and Ae2B30 clusters as true minima on the potential energy surface having a monocyclic ring, two-ring tubular, and three-ring tubular boron motifs, respectively. Then, a thorough global minimum (GM) structural search reveals that a monocyclic B8 ring capped with two Ae atoms is indeed a GM for Ca2B8 and Ba2B8, while for Sr2B8 it is a low-lying isomer. Similarly, the present search also unambiguously shows the most stable isomers of Ae2B18 and Ae2B30 to be highly symmetric two- and three-ring tubular boron motifs, respectively, capped with two Ae atoms on each side of the tube. In these Ae-doped boron clusters, in addition to the electrostatic interactions, a substantial covalent interaction, specifically the bonding occurring between (n - 1)d orbitals of Ae and delocalized orbitals of boron motifs, provides the essential driving force behind their highly symmetrical structures and overall stability.

Modeling the near-field effect on molecular excited states using the discrete interaction model/quantum mechanical method

Strong light-matter interactions significantly modify the optical properties of molecules in the vicinity of plasmonic metal nanoparticles. Since the dimension of the plasmonic cavity approaches that of the molecules, it is critical to explicitly describe the nanoparticle junctions. In this work, we use the discrete interaction model/quantum mechanical (DIM/QM) method to model the coupling between the plasmonic near-field and molecular excited states. DIM/QM is a combined electrodynamics/quantum mechanical model that uses an atomistic description of the nanoparticle. We extend the DIM/QM method to include the local field effects in the sum-over-state formalism of time-dependent density functional theory. As a test of the method, we study the interactions between small organic chromophores and metal nanoparticles. In particular, we examine how the inclusion of multiple electronic transitions and intermolecular interactions modify the coupling between molecules and nanoparticles. Using the sum-over-state formalism of DIM/QM, we show that two-state models break down when the plasmon excitation is detuned from the molecular excitations. To gain further insight, we compare the simple coupled-dipole model (CDM) with the DIM/QM model. We find that CDM works well for simple systems but fails when going beyond the single molecule or single nanoparticle cases. We also find that the coupling depends strongly on the site of the nanoparticle in which the chromophore couples to. Our work suggests the importance of explicitly describing the cavity to capture the atomistic level local field environment in which the molecule strongly couples to.

A stable rhodium-coordinated carbene with a σ0π2 electronic configuration

Isolable singlet carbenes have universally adopted a σ2π0 electronic state, making them σ-donors and π-acceptors. We present a rhodium-coordinated, cationic cyclic diphosphinocarbene with a σ0π2 ground state configuration. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy studies show a carbene carbon chemical shift below -30.0 parts per million. X-ray crystallography reveals a planar RhP2C configuration. Quantum chemical calculations rationalize how σ-electron delocalization/donation and π-electron negative hyperconjugation together stabilize the formally vacant σ orbital and the filled π orbital at the carbene center. In contrast to traditional carbene counterparts this carbene can undergo synthetic transformations with both a Lewis base and a silver salt, producing a Lewis acid/base adduct and a silver π-complex, respectively. Exhibiting ambiphilic reactivity, it can also form a ketenimine through reaction with an isocyanide.

Advances in heavy alkaline earth chemistry provide insight into complexation of weakly polarizing Ra2+, Ba2+, and Sr2+ cations

Numerous technologies-with catalytic, therapeutic, and diagnostic applications-would benefit from improved chelation strategies for heavy alkaline earth elements: Ra2+, Ba2+, and Sr2+. Unfortunately, chelating these metals is challenging because of their large size and weak polarizing power. We found 18-crown-6-tetracarboxylic acid (H4COCO) bound Ra2+, Ba2+, and Sr2+ to form M(HxCOCO)x-2. Upon isolating radioactive 223Ra from its parent radionuclides (227Ac and 227Th), 223Ra2+ reacted with the fully deprotonated COCO4- chelator to generate Ra(COCO)2-(aq) (log KRa(COCO)2- = 5.97 ± 0.01), a rare example of a molecular radium complex. Comparative analyses with Sr2+ and Ba2+ congeners informed on what attributes engendered success in heavy alkaline earth complexation. Chelators with high negative charge [-4 for Ra(COCO)2-(aq)] and many donor atoms [≥11 in Ra(COCO)2-(aq)] provided a framework for stable complex formation. These conditions achieved steric saturation and overcame the weak polarization powers associated with these large dicationic metals.

Effect of substituting donors on the hole mobility of hole transporting materials in perovskite solar cells: a DFT study

Several hole-transporting materials (HTMs) have been designed by incorporating different types of π-conjugation group such as long chain aliphatic alkenes and condensed aromatic rings of benzene and thiophene and their derivatives on both sides between the planar core and donor of a reference HTM. Various electronic, optical, and dynamic properties have been calculated by using DFT, TDDFT, and Marcus theory. In this study, all the designed HTMs show a lower HOMO energy level and match well with the perovskite absorbers. Inserting condensed rings results in better hole mobility compared to aliphatic double bonds. It is found that the charge transfer integral is the dominant factor which mainly influences the hole mobility in our studied HTMs. Other factors such as hole reorganization energy, hole hopping rate, and centroid distance have a minor effect on hole mobility. Thus, this study is expected to provide guidance for the design and synthesis of new HTMs with increased hole mobility.

Computation of 31P NMR chemical shifts in Keggin-based lacunary polyoxotungstates

Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were employed to systematically study the accuracy of various exchange-correlation functionals in reproducing experimental 31P NMR chemical shifts, δExp(31P) for Keggin, [PW12O40]3- and corresponding lacunary clusters: [PW11O39]7-, [A-PW9O34]9-, and [B-PW9O34]9-. Initially, computed chemical shifts, δCalc(31P) were obtained with without neutralising their charge in which associated error, δError(31P), decreased as a function of Hartree-Fock (HF) exchange, attributed to constriction of the P-O tetrahedron. By comparison, δCalc(31P) performed with explicitly located counterions to render the system charge neutral, reduced discrepancies, δError(31P) by 1-2 ppm. However, uncertainties in δCalc(31P) remain, particularly for [B-PW9O34]9- anions attributed to direct electrostatic interactions between the counterions and the central tetrahedron. Optimal results were achieved using the PBE/TZP//PBE0/TZP method, achieving a mean absolute error (MAE) and a mean squared error (MSE) of 4.03 ppm. Our results emphasize that understanding the nature of the electrolyte and solvent environment is essential to obtaining reasonable agreement between theoretical and experimental results.

Molecular Accessibility and Diffusion of Resorufin in Zeolite Crystals

We have used confocal laser scanning microscopy on the small, fluorescent resorufin dye molecule to visualize molecular accessibility and diffusion in the hierarchical, anisotropic pore structure of large (~10 μm-sized) zeolite-β crystals. The resorufin dye is widely used in life and materials science, but only in its deprotonated form because the protonated molecule is barely fluorescent in aqueous solution. In this work, we show that protonated resorufin is in fact strongly fluorescent when confined within zeolite micropores, thus enabling fluorescence microimaging experiments. We find that J-aggregation guest-guest interactions lead to a decrease in the measured fluorescence intensity that can be prevented by using non-fluorescent spacer molecules. We characterized the pore space by introducing resorufin from the outside solution and following its diffusion into zeolite-β crystals. The eventual homogeneous distribution of resorufin molecules throughout the zeolite indicates a fully accessible pore network. This enables the quantification of the diffusion coefficient in the straight pores of zeolite-β without the need for complex analysis, and we found a value of 3×10-15  m2  s-1 . Furthermore, we saw that diffusion through the straight pores of zeolite-β is impeded when crossing the boundaries between zeolite subunits.

Blueshift in Trifurcated Hydrogen Bonds: A Tradeoff between Tetrel Bonding and Steric Repulsion

We have quantum chemically investigated the origin of the atypical blueshift of the H-C bond stretching frequency in the hydrogen-bonded complex X- •••H3 C-Y (X, Y=F, Cl, Br, I), as compared to the corresponding redshift occurring in Cl- •••H3 N and Cl- •••H3 C-H, using relativistic density functional theory (DFT) at ZORA-BLYP-D3(BJ)/QZ4P. Previously, this blueshift was attributed, among others, to the contraction of the H-C bonds as the H3 C moiety becomes less pyramidal. Herein, we provide quantitative evidence that, instead, the blueshift arises from a direct and strong X- •••C interaction of the HOMO of A- with the backside lobe on carbon of the low-lying C-Y antibonding σ* LUMO of the H3 C-Y fragment. This X- •••C bond, in essence a tetrel bond, pushes the H atoms towards a shorter H-C distance and makes the H3 C moiety more planar. The blueshift may, therefore, serve as a diagnostic for tetrel bonding.

Effect of density functional approximations on the calculated Jahn-Teller distortion in bis(terpyridine)manganese(III) and related compounds

CONTEXT

Bis(terpyridine)manganese(III) exhibits Jahn-Teller distortion due to the inequivalent occupation of the degenerate eg orbitals of this high-spin d4 pseudo octahedral complex. Due to the spatially constrained nature of the terpyridine ligand, the central Mn-N bonds will always be shorter than the Mn-N terminal bonds, making it more difficult to distinguish between compression and elongation Jahn-Teller structures for bis(terpyridine)manganese(III). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were utilized as a tool to evaluate the type of Jahn-Teller distortion in the high-spin d4 bis(terpyridine)manganese(III). The nature of the Jahn-Teller distortion calculated does depend upon the choice of density functional approximation (DFA) with the B3LYP, M06, and OLYP-D3 DFAs giving compression and the PW6B95D3, MN15, and MN15-D3 DFAs giving elongation in gas-phase calculations. All solvent-phase calculations yield an elongated structure for the bis(terpyridine)manganese(III) compound, which is yet to be structurally characterized experimentally. However, both gas and solvent OLYP-D3 calculations result in a compressed structure for the only experimentally isolated and characterized bis(terpyridine)manganese(III) complex, specifically the complex with terpyridine = 4'-(4-methylphenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine. This alignment with the experimentally observed compression Jahn-Teller structure enhances the credibility of OLYP-D3 calculations in reproducing the observed geometries. The compressed Jahn-Teller geometries were near D2d symmetry with the z-axis for compression defined along the Mn-N central bonds. Elongation Jahn-Teller distortion is not possible along the Mn-N central bonds, due to their spatially constrained nature. Thus, elongation occur along one pair of opposite Mn-N terminal bonds that are longer than the other pair of opposite terminal bonds, with shorter central bonds. The highest symmetry of the elongation Jahn-Teller distortion geometry of bis(terpyridine)manganese(III) is C2v. Criteria to distinguish between a compression and elongation Jahn-Teller geometry for bis(terpyridine)manganese(III) are identified. The nature of the singly occupied eg molecular orbital, exhibiting anti-bonding interaction with the nitrogen-p MOs involved, dictates the type of Jahn-Teller distortion that occurs. The low-energy occupied bonding t2g molecular orbitals establish bonds with and undergo mixing with the ligand molecular orbitals. The OLYP-D3 functional is recommended for calculating bis(terpyridine)manganese(III) and related compounds due to its consistent generation of metal-ligand bonds slightly longer than observed in experiments, in line with the required behavior. Additionally, OLYP-D3 offers a realistic electronic structure for Jahn-Teller distorted bis(terpyridine)manganese(III), correctly identifying alpha eg molecular orbitals as the highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital in agreement with experimental electrochemical studies. Furthermore, OLYP-D3 accurately reproduces the experimental compression geometry for the only structurally known bis(terpyridine)manganese(III) compound, instilling confidence in its reliability for such calculations.

METHODS

DFT geometry optimization and frequency calculations were done on the two different modes of Jahn-Teller distortion of bis(terpyridine)manganese(III), using the OLYP, B3LYP, M06, PW6B95D3, and MN15 functionals, with and without the Grimme's D3 dispersion correction, and the 6-311G(d,p) or def2TZVPP basis set, as implemented in Gaussian 16. All optimizations were in the gas phase and also in the solvent phase with CH3CN as implicit solvent using IEFPCM. DFT calculations were utilized to determine the Jahn-Teller effect on the geometry of high-spin d4 bis(terpyridine)manganese(III) complex containing two structurally constrained tridentate ligands.

The effect of {O,N}=X⋯M={Ti,Zr,Hf} interactions on the sensitivity of CNO2 trigger bonds in FOX-7: Approach based on the QTAIM/EDA-NOCV analysis

The local chemical reactivity of FOX-7 (1,1-diamino-2,2-nitroethylene, also known as DADNE from DiAminoDiNitroEthylene) was elucidated through a quantitative study of the electrostatic potential on the molecular surface, topological analysis based on Bader's theory, and the EDA-NOCV method. Unlike (O2N)2CC(NH2)H2N⋯Cp2MCH3+ complexes, which exhibit both σ-donor and π-acceptor features, the situation is different concerning the (H2N)2CC(NO2)(O)NO⋯Cp2MCH3+ complexes, where both charge transfers correspond to the σ-donation. The two charge transfers reinforce each other, resulting in increased stability for (H2N)2CC(NO2)(O)NO⋯Cp2MCH3+. This seems to strengthen the (H2N)2CC(NO2)(O)NO⋯M={Ti,Zr,Hf} bond, which may explain the high stability of (H2N)2CC(NO2)(O)NO⋯Cp2MCH3+ compared to (O2N)2CC(NH2)-H2N⋯Cp2MCH3+. Results from topological analysis revealed that the decreased sensitivity to decomposition of CNO2 bonds depends on the chemical nature of the interacting metal, and the best achievements are obtained for the Hf-based complex. Our results demonstrate that the interaction of M={Ti,Zr,Hf} with CNO2 is more favourable than that with CNH2, this specific action on the trigger bond may support the use of Metallocene Methyl Cations (MMC) as possible neutralisers.

Enrichment and immobilization of heavy metal ions from wastewater by nanocellulose/carbon dots-derived composite

Heavy metal ions (HMIs) have been widely applied in various industries because of their excellent physicochemical properties. However, their discharging without appropriate treatment brought about serious pollution problems. So it is desirable but challenging to rapidly and completely clean up these toxic pollutants from water, especially utilizing environmentally friendly and naturally rich biomass materials. In this work, we prepared nanocellulose/carbon dots/magnesium hydroxide (CCMg) ternary composite using cotton via a simple hydrothermal method. The removal mechanism towards Cd2+ and Cu2+ was investigated using a combination of experimental techniques and density functional theory calculations. CCMg shows a good ability to remove HMIs. It is realized that the interaction between each component of CCMg and cadmium nitrate is mainly of hydrogen/dative bonds. Cadmium nitrate is preferentially enriched by the Mg(OH)2 moiety, proved by calculated thermodynamics, interfacial interactions and charges. After transformation, the cadmium carbonate precipitate is fixed on the surface by nanocellulose (NC) via chemical coupling; and of interest is that copper ion precipitates in the form of basic sulfate. Due to its high adsorption effect and simple recovery operation, CCMg is having a wide range of application prospects as a water treatment agent.

In current work, quince seed mucilage and β-Cyclodextrin based pH regulated hydrogels were developed using aqueous free radical polymerization to sustain Capecitabine release patterns and to overcome its drawbacks, such as high dose frequency, short half-life, and low bioavailability. Developed networks were subjected to thermal analysis, Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy, powder x-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy, equilibrium swelling, and in-vitro release investigations to assess the network system's stability, complexation, morphology, and pH responsiveness. Thermally stable pH-responsive cross-linked networks were formed. Nanocomposite hydrogels were prepared by incorporating Capecitabine-containing clay into the swollen hydrogels. All the formulations exhibited equilibrium swelling ranging from 67.98 % to 92.98 % at pH 7.4. Optimum Capecitabine loading (88.17 %) was noted in the case of hydrogels, while it was 74.27 % in nanocomposite hydrogels. Excellent gel content (65.88 %-93.56 %) was noticed among developed formulations. Elemental analysis ensured the successful incorporation of Capecitabine. Nanocomposite hydrogels released 80.02 % longer than hydrogels after 30 h. NC hydrogels had higher t1/2 (10.57 h), AUC (121.52 μg.h/ml), and MRT (18.95 h) than hydrogels in oral pharmacokinetics. These findings imply that the pH-responsive carrier system may improve Capecitabine efficacy and reduce dosing frequency in cancer therapy. Toxicity profiling proved the system's safety, non-toxicity, and biocompatibility.

Utilising a Proton-Responsive 1,8-Naphthyridine Ligand for the Synthesis of Bimetallic Palladium and Platinum Complexes

We present four proton-responsive palladium and platinum complexes, [MCl2 (R PONNHO)] (M=Pd, Pt; R=i Pr, t Bu) synthesised by complexation of PdCl2 or PtCl2 (COD) with the 1,8-naphthyridine ligand R PONNHO. Deprotonation of [MCl2 (tBu PONNHO)] switches ligand coordination from mono- to dinucleating, offering a synthetic pathway to bimetallic PdII and PtII complexes [M2 Cl2 (tBu PONNO)2 ]. Two-electron reduction gives planar MI -MI complexes [M2 (tBu PONNO)2 ] (M=Pd, Pt) containing a metal-metal bond. In contrast to the related nickel system that forms a metallophosphorane [Ni2 (tBu PONNOPONNO)], an unusual phosphinite binding mode is observed in [M2 (tBu PONNO)2 ] containing close phosphinite-naphthyridinone P⋅⋅⋅O interactions, which is investigated spectroscopically, crystallographically and computationally. The presented proton-responsive and structurally-responsive R PONNHO and bimetallic R PONNO complexes offer a novel platform for future explorations of metal-ligand and metal-metal cooperativity with palladium and platinum.

Beryllium Dimer Reactions with Acetonitrile: Formation of Strong Be-Be Bonds

Laser ablated Be atoms have been reacted with acetonitrile molecules in 4 K solid neon matrix. The diberyllium products BeBeNCCH3 and CNBeBeCH3 have been identified by D and 13C isotopic substitutions and quantum chemical calculations. The stabilization of the diberyllium species is rationalized from the formation of the real Be-Be single bonds with bond distances as 2.077 and 2.058 Å and binding energies as -27.1 and -77.2 kcal/mol calculated at CCSD (T)/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory for BeBeNCCH3 and CNBeBeCH3, respectively. EDA-NOCV analysis described the interaction between Be2 and NC···CH3 fragments as Lewis "acid-base" interactions. In the complexes, the Be2 moiety carries positive charges which transfer from antibonding orbital of Be2 to the bonding fragments significantly strengthen the Be-Be bonds that are corroborated by AIM, LOL and NBO analyses. In addition, mono beryllium products BeNCCH3, CNBeCH3, HBeCH2CN and HBeNCCH2 have also been observed in our experiments.

Element effects in endohedral metal-metal-bonding fullerenes M2@C82 (M = Sc, Y, La, Lu)

Endohedral metal-metal-bonding fullerenes have recently emerged, in which encapsulated metals form a metal-metal bond. However, the physical reasons why some metal elements prefer to form metal-metal bonds inside fullerene are still unclear. Herein, we reported first-principles calculations on electronic structures, bonding properties, dynamics, and thermodynamic stabilities of endohedral metallofullerenes M2@C82 (M = Sc, Y, La, Lu). Multiple bonding analysis approaches unambiguously reveal the existence of one two-center two-electron σ covalent metal-metal bond in M2@C82 (M = Sc, Y, Lu); however, the La-La bonding interaction in La2@C82 is weaker and could not be categorized as one metal-metal covalent bond. The energy decomposition analysis on bonding interactions between an encapsulated metal dimer and fullerene cages suggested that there exist two electron-sharing bonds between a metal dimer and fullerene cages. The reasons why La2 prefers to donate electrons to fullerene cages rather than form a standard σ covalent metal-metal bond are mainly attributed to two following facts: La2 has a lower ionization potential, while the hybridization of ns, (n - 1)d, and np atomic orbitals in La2 is higher. Ab initio molecular dynamic simulations reveal that the M-M bond length at room temperature follows the trend of Sc < Lu < Y. The statistical thermodynamics calculations at different temperatures reveal that the experimentally observed endohedral metal-metal-bonding fullerenes M2@C82 have high concentrations in the endohedral fullerene formation temperature range.

MetalDock: An Open Access Docking Tool for Easy and Reproducible Docking of Metal Complexes

Despite the proven potential of metal complexes as therapeutics, the lack of computational tools available for the high-throughput screening of their interactions with proteins is a limiting factor toward clinical developments. To address this challenge, we introduce MetalDock, an easy-to-use, open access docking software for docking metal complexes to proteins. Our tool integrates the AutoDock docking engine with three well-known quantum software packages to automate the docking of metal-organic complexes to proteins. We used a Monte Carlo sampling scheme to obtain the missing Lennard-Jones parameters for 12 metal atom types and demonstrated that these parameters generalize exceptionally well. Our results show that the poses obtained by MetalDock are highly accurate, as they predict the binding geometries experimentally determined by crystal structures with high spatial reproducibility. Three different case studies are presented that demonstrate the versatility of MetalDock for the docking of diverse metal-organic compounds to different biomacromolecules, including nucleic acids.

10-Valence-Electron C≡O and the 14-VE C≡Pt: Two Triple-Bonded Isoelectronic Families Differing by a dδ4 Ring

10-VE A≡A' Diatomics, such as N≡N, C≡O, etc., have a strong σ2π4 triple bond plus a lone pair at each end. In our studies on 14-VE A≡B systems, such as C≡Pt, we find a similar bonding system plus a (5dδ)4 ring. Here, the A atom belongs to groups 13-17 and the B atom to groups 7-11. Also the BB' combinations, triatomics, such as PtCO or DsCO or uranyl, and longer chains, such as AuCN and [NC-Au-CN]-, are discussed. The δ ring directly contributes to nuclear quadrupole coupling constants, and DFT calculations using the BH and H or mPW1K functionals reproduce the experimental trends of the NQCC.

Reaction pathways, proton transfer, and proton pumping in ba3 class cytochrome c oxidase: perspectives from DFT quantum chemistry and molecular dynamics

After drawing comparisons between the reaction pathways of cytochrome c oxidase (CcO, Complex 4) and the preceding complex cytochrome bc1 (Complex 3), both being proton pumping complexes along the electron transport chain, we provide an analysis of the reaction pathways in bacterial ba3 class CcO, comparing spectroscopic results and kinetics observations with results from DFT calculations. For an important arc of the catalytic cycle in CcO, we can trace the energy pathways for the chemical protons and show how these pathways drive proton pumping of the vectorial protons. We then explore the proton loading network above the Fe heme a3-CuB catalytic center, showing how protons are loaded in and then released by combining DFT-based reaction energies with molecular dynamics simulations over states of that cycle. We also propose some additional reaction pathways for the chemical and vector protons based on our recent work with spectroscopic support.

Binding Properties of Small Electrophilic Anions [B6 X5 ]- and [B10 X9 ]- (X=Cl, Br, I): Activation of Small Molecules Based on π-Backbonding

Superelectrophilic anions constitute a special class of molecular anions that show strong binding of weak nucleophiles despite their negative charge. In this study, the binding characteristics of smaller gaseous electrophilic anions of the types [B6 X5 ]- and [B10 X9 ]- (with X=Cl, Br, I) were computationally and experimentally investigated and compared to those of the larger analogues [B12 X11 ]- . The positive charge of vacant boron increases from [B6 X5 ]- via [B10 X9 ]- to [B12 X11 ]- , as evidenced by increasing attachment enthalpies towards typical σ-donor molecules (noble gases, H2 O). However, this behavior is reversed for σ-donor-π-acceptor molecules. [B6 Cl5 ]- binds most strongly to N2 and CO, even more strongly than to H2 O. Energy decomposition analysis confirms that the orbital interaction is responsible for this opposite trend. The extended transition state natural orbitals for chemical valence method shows that the π-backdonation order is [B6 X5 ]- >[B10 X9 ]- >[B12 X11 ]- . This predicted order explains the experimentally observed red shifts of the CO and N2 stretching fundamentals compared to those of the unbound molecules, as measured by infrared photodissociation spectroscopy. The strongest red shift is observed for [B6 Cl5 N2 ]- : 222 cm-1 . Therefore, strong activation of unreactive σ-donor-π-acceptor molecules (commonly observed for cationic transition metal complexes) is achieved with metal-free molecular anions.

Prediction of Aqueous Reduction Potentials of X•, ChH•, and XO• Radicals with X = Halogen and Ch = Chalcogen

The aqueous electron affinity and aqueous reduction potentials for F•, Cl•, Br•, I•, OH•, SH•, SeH•, TeH•, ClO•, BrO•, and IO• were calculated using electronic structure methods for explicit cluster models coupled with a self-consistent reaction field (SMD) to treat the aqueous solvent. Calculations were conducted using MP2 and correlated molecular orbital theory up to the CCSD(T)-F12b level for water tetramer clusters and MP2 for octamer cluster. Inclusion of explicit waters was found to be important for accurately predicting the redox potentials in a number of cases. The calculated reduction potentials for X• and ChH• were predicted to within ∼0.1 V of the reported literature values. Fluorine is anomalous due to abstraction of a hydrogen from one of the surrounding water molecules to form a hydroxyl radical and hydrogen fluoride, so its redox potential was calculated using only an implicit model. Larger deviations from experiment were predicted for ClO• and BrO•. These deviations are due to the free energy of solvation of the anion being too negative, as found in the pKa calculations, and that for the neutral being too positive with the current approach.

13Ccarbene nuclear magnetic resonance chemical shift analysis confirms CeIV[double bond, length as m-dash]C double bonding in cerium(iv)-diphosphonioalkylidene complexes

Diphosphonioalkylidene dianions have emerged as highly effective ligands for lanthanide and actinide ions, and the resulting formal metal-carbon double bonds have challenged and developed conventional thinking about f-element bond multiplicity and covalency. However, f-element-diphosphonioalkylidene complexes can be represented by several resonance forms that render their metal-carbon double bond status unclear. Here, we report an experimentally-validated 13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance computational assessment of two cerium(iv)-diphosphonioalkylidene complexes, [Ce(BIPMTMS)(ODipp)2] (1, BIPMTMS = {C(PPh2NSiMe3)2}2-; Dipp = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl) and [Ce(BIPMTMS)2] (2). Decomposing the experimental alkylidene chemical shifts into their corresponding calculated shielding (σ) tensor components verifies that these complexes exhibit Ce[double bond, length as m-dash]C double bonds. Strong magnetic coupling of Ce[double bond, length as m-dash]C σ/π* and π/σ* orbitals produces strongly deshielded σ11 values, a characteristic hallmark of alkylidenes, and the largest 13C chemical shift tensor spans of any alkylidene complex to date (1, 801 ppm; 2, 810 ppm). In contrast, the phosphonium-substituent shielding contributions are much smaller than the Ce[double bond, length as m-dash]C σ- and π-bond components. This study confirms significant Ce 4f-orbital contributions to the Ce[double bond, length as m-dash]C bonding, provides further support for a previously proposed inverse-trans-influence in 2, and reveals variance in the 4f spin-orbit contributions that relate to the alkylidene hybridisation. This work thus confirms the metal-carbon double bond credentials of f-element-diphosphonioalkylidenes, providing quantified benchmarks for understanding diphosphonioalkylidene bonding generally.

More Electropositive is More Electronegative: Atom Size Determines C=X Group Electronegativity

Opposite to what one might expect, we find that the C=X group can become effectively more, not less, electronegative when the Pauling electronegativity of atom X decreases down Groups 16, 15, and 14 of the Periodic Table. Our quantum-chemical analyses, show that, and why, this phenomenon is a direct consequence of the increasing size of atom X down a group. These findings can be applied to tuning and improving the hydrogen-bond donor strength of amides H2 NC(=X)R by increasingly withdrawing density from the NH2 group. A striking example is that H2 NC(=SiR2 )R is a stronger hydrogen-bond donor than H2 NC(=CR2 )R.
