Abstract
Diastereomeric meso- and d,l-bis(bicyclopropylidenyl) (5) were obtained upon oxidation with oxygen of a higher-order cuprate generated from lithiobicyclopropylidene (4) in 50 and 31 % yield, respectively. Their perdeuterated analogues meso-[D(14)]- and d,l-[D(14)]-5 were obtained along the same route from perdeuterated bicyclopropylidene [D(8)]-3 (synthesized in six steps in 7.4 % overall yield from [D(8)]-THF) in 20.5 % yield each. Dehalogenative coupling of 1,1-dibromo-2-cyclopropylcyclopropane (6) gave a mixture of all possible stereoisomers of 1,5-dicyclopropylbicyclopropylidene 16 in 69 % yield, from which (Z)-cis-16 was separated by preparative gas chromatography (26 % yield). The crystal structure of meso-5 looks like a superposition of the crystal structures of two outer bicyclopropylidene units (3) and one inner s-trans-bicyclopropyl unit, whereas the two outer cyclopropyl moieties adopt a gauche orientation with respect to the cyclopropane rings at the inner bicyclopropylidene units in (Z)-cis-16. Birch reduction with lithium in liquid ammonia of meso-5 and d,l-5 gave two pairs of diastereomeric quatercyclopropanes trans,trans-(R*,S*,R*, S*)-17/cis,trans-(R*,S*,R*,R*)-18 and trans,trans-(R*,S*,S*,R*)-19/cis,trans-(R*,S*,S*,S*)-20 in 97 and 76 % yield, respectively, in a ratio 9:1 for every pair. The latter diastereomer was also obtained as the sole product by Birch reduction of (Z)-cis-16 in 96 % yield. Under the same conditions, tetradecadeuterio analogues trans,trans-[D(14)]-(R*,S*,R*,S*)-17/cis,trans-[D(14)]-(R*, S*,R*,R*)-18 (8:1) and trans,trans-[D(14)]-(R*,S*,S*,R*)-19/cis,trans-[D(14)]-(R*,S*,S*,S*)-20 (12:1) were prepared from meso-[D(14)]-5 and d,l-[D(14)]-5 in 37 and 63 % yield, respectively. Reduction of meso-5 with diimine gave the cis,cis-quatercyclopropane (S*,S*,R*,R*)-21 as the main product (58 % yield) along with the cis,trans-diastereomer (S*,S*,R*,S*)-18 (29 % yield). Thus, five of the six possible diastereomeric quatercyclopropanes were obtained from meso-5, d,l-5, and (Z)-cis-16. The X-ray crystal structure analyses of trans,trans-(R*,S*,R*,S*)-17 and cis,cis-(S*,S*,R*,R*)-21 revealed for the both an unusual conformation in which the central bicyclopropyl unit adopts an s-trans-(antiperiplanar) orientation with phi=180.0 degrees , and the two terminal bicyclopropyl moieties adopt a synclinal conformation with phi=49.8 and 72.0 degrees , respectively. In solution the vicinal coupling constants (3)J(H,H) in trans,trans-(R*,S*,R*,S*)-[D(14)]-17, trans,trans-(R*,S*,S*,R*)-[D(14)]-19, trans,cis-(R*,S*,R*,R*)-[D(14)]-18 and trans,cis-(R*,S*,S*,S*)-[D(14)]-20 were found to be 4.1, 4.7, 5.9 and 5.9 Hz, respectively. This indicates a predominance of the all-gauche conformer in (R*,S*,R*,S*)-17 and a decreasing fraction of it in this sequence of the other diastereomers.

Abstract
By a sidearm approach, camphor-derived sulfur ylides 1 were designed and synthesized for the cyclopropanation of electron-deficient alkenes and epoxidation of aldehydes. Under the optimal conditions, the exo-type sulfonium salts 4a and 4b reacted with beta-aryl-alpha,beta-unsaturated esters, amides, ketones, and nitriles to give 1,3-disubstituted-2-vinylcyclopropanes with high diastereoselectivities and enantioselectivities. When the endo-type sulfonium salts 5a and 5b were used, the diastereoselectivities were not changed, whereas the absolute configurations of the products became the opposite to those of the reactions of 4a and 4b. An ylide cyclopropanation of chalcone derivatives with phenylvinyl bromide in the presence of catalytic amount of chiral sulfonium salts 4b and 5b has been developed. The sidearmed hydroxyl group was found to play a key role in the control of enantioselectivity and diastereoselectivity. The origins of the high diastereoselectivity and enantioselectivity were also studied by density functional theory calculations, which reveal the importance of the hydrogen-bonding between the sidearmed hydroxyl group and the substrate in determining the diastereoselectivity and enantioselectivity. The ylides 1 were also successfully applied for the epoxidation of aromatic aldehydes.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] A variety of 1,3-diketones can be efficiently converted into the corresponding 1,4-diketones and trans-1,2-disubstituted cyclopropanols by using organozinc species in one-pot reactions. It was found that 2.3 equiv of CF3CO2ZnCH2I was effective to give the corresponding chain-extended products in 44-85% yields, while a mixture of organozinc species formed from 4.0 equiv of Et2Zn, 2.0 equiv of CF3CO2H, and 4.0 equiv of CH2I2 resulted in the formation of trans-1,2-disubstituted cyclopropanols with quite good yields and diastereoselectivity.

Abstract
A new and efficient method is presented for the preparation of the N-Boc-protected cyclopropane analogue of valine, 1-(N-tert-butoxycarbonyl)amino-2,2-dimethylcyclopropanecarboxylic acid, both in racemic and enantiomerically pure forms. Cyclopropanation of the exocyclic double bond of 2-phenyl-4-isopropylidene-5(4H)-oxazolone with diazomethane followed by elaboration of the heterocyclic moiety provided multigram quantities of the racemic target compound. Subsequent HPLC resolution of a racemic precursor on a noncommercial chiral stationary phase has given access to enantiomerically pure products. Almost 1.5 g of the first-eluted enantiomer and 1.0 g of the second-eluted enantiomer have been isolated in optically pure form using a 150 x 20 mm ID column containing mixed 10-undecenoate/3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate of cellulose covalently bonded to allylsilica gel with a mixture of hexanes/tert-butyl methyl ether/ethyl acetate as the mobile phase.

Abstract
The catalytic asymmetric introduction of alkynyl functionality to alpha-amino acid derivatives was realized by the direct addition of terminal alkynes to alpha-imino ester in the presence of chiral Cu(I) complex under mild reaction conditions. Owing to the rich chemistry to which alkyne can be subjected, the present system provides a remarkably versatile tool for the construction of optically active alpha-amino acid derivatives. Good yields and enantiomeric excess values were achieved with an array of terminal alkynes and challenging, biologically active, unnatural alpha-amino acid derivatives could be conveniently obtained.

Abstract
(1R,2S)-1-Amino-2-vinylcyclopropanecarboxylic acid (vinyl-ACCA) is a key building block in the synthesis of potent inhibitors of the hepatitis C virus NS3 protease such as BILN 2061, which was recently shown to dramatically reduce viral load after administration to patients infected with HCV genotype 1. We have developed a scalable process that delivers derivatives of this unusual amino acid in >99% ee. The strategy was based on the dialkylation of a glycine Schiff base using trans-1,4-dibromo-2-butene as an electrophile to produce racemic vinyl-ACCA, which was subsequently resolved using a readily available, inexpensive esterase enzyme (Alcalase 2.4L). Factors that affect diastereoselection in the initial dialkylation steps were examined and the conditions optimized to deliver the desired diastereomer selectively. Product inhibition, which was encountered during the enzymatic resolution step, initially resulted in prolonged cycle times. Enrichment of racemic vinyl-ACCA through a chemical resolution via diastereomeric salt formation or the use of forcing conditions in the enzymatic reaction both led to improvements in throughput and the development of a viable process. The chemistry described herein was scaled up to produce multikilogram quantities of this building block.

Abstract
Cyclopropenoids fatty acids (CPFA) from Sterculia striata seed oil were characterized by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and quantified by gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID) after derivation to fatty acid methyl esters using a cold base-catalyzed procedure. 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis were done in oil and fatty acid methyl esters derivatives to quantify CPFA and verify artifacts formation during the base-catalyzed reaction. Similar quantities of CPFA were found in S. striata and Sterculia foetida seed oils before and after a base-catalyzed methylation by NMR analysis, with no artifact formation. These results were compatible with those obtained by GC-FID analysis. Transmethylation with KOH in methanol was an appropriated method to prepare cyclopropenoids fatty acids methyl esters and quantify them by GC and NMR analysis.
