Abstract
Preparation of novel salicylate-selective optical sensors (bulk optodes) was performed and applied successfully for salicylate determination in pharmaceutical formulations, Aspirin® and Aspocid®. t-butyl calix[4]arene ionophore was incorporated in a plasticized poly (vinyl-chloride) membrane containing the chromoionophore ETH5294 (O1) or ETH7075 (O5). The optical response to salicylate was due to size-selective extraction of salicylate from the aqueous solution to the optode bulk through formation of hydrogen bond accompanied by chromoionophore protonation, that resulted in the optical response at 680 or 540 nm for O1 or O5, respectively. Reliable size-selectivity was measured for salicylate over other anions; The calculated selectivity coefficients of O5 optode were found to be: -4.4, -2.0 and - 3.7 for iodide, benzoate and perchlorate, respectively. The hydrogen bonding mechanism and selectivity pattern were ensured and explained by IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. For the same purpose, a molecular recognition constant of βsal=100.043 was calculated using sandwich membrane method, and its small value ensured that hydrogen bonding interaction is responsible for the optode response. The detection limits of O1 and O5 in salicylate buffered solutions were 9.0 × 10-5 and 8.9 × 10-5 M with response times of 5 and 3 min, respectively, and with very good reversibility. The practical utility of the developed sensors was ensured by salicylate determination in Aspirin® and Aspocid®. Beyond the observed analytical performance, the present work aims not only to effectively apply Calixarene without derivatization, but also to estimate the strength of the size-dependent hydrogen bonding and comprehensively study the interaction mechanism.

Abstract
Potentiometric sensing of ions with ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) is a powerful technique for selective and sensitive measurement of ions in complex matrices. The application of ISEs is generally limited to laboratory settings, because most commercially available ISEs and reference electrodes are large, delicate, and expensive, and are not suitable for point-of-use or point-of-care measurements. This work utilizes cotton thread as a substrate for fabrication of robust and miniaturized ISEs that are suitable for point-of-care or point-of-use applications. Thread-based ISEs selective for Cl-, K+, Na+, and Ca2+ were developed. The cation-selective ISEs were fabricated by coating the thread with a surfactant-free conductive ink (made of carbon black) and then coating the tip of the conductive thread with the ion-selective membrane. The Cl- ISE was fabricated by coating the thread with an Ag/AgCl ink. These sensors exhibited slopes (of electrical potential vs. log concentration of target ion), close to the theoretically-expected values, over four orders of magnitude in concentrations of ions. Because thread is mechanically strong, the thread-based electrodes can be used in multiple-use applications as well as single-use applications. Multiple thread-based sensors can be easily bundled together to fabricate a customized sensor for multiplexed ion-sensing. These electrodes require volumes of sample as low as 200 μL. The application of thread-based ISEs is demonstrated in the analysis of ions in soil, food, and dietary supplements (Cl- in soil/water slurry, K+ and Na+ in coconut water, and Ca2+ in a calcium supplement), and in detection of physiological electrolytes (K+ and Na+ in blood serum and urine, with sufficient accuracy for clinical diagnostics).

Abstract
The electrochemical properties of ion-exchanger-based solvent polymeric ion-selective electrodes (ISEs)—bulk and interfacial resistance, capacitance, and polarization under a galvanostatic current step—are studied, with a nitrate ISE based on tetradecylammonium nitrate (TDANO3) as a model system. The study is performed by chronopotentiometric and impedance measurements, and focuses on the dependence of the aforementioned properties on the concentration of NO3− anions in solution. The impacts from the bulk and the interfacial charge transfer to the overall membrane resistance are revealed. It is shown that the bulk resistance of the membranes decreases over an increase of NO3− concentration within the range of a Nernstian potentiometric response of the ISE. This fact, also reported earlier for K+- and Ca2+-selective ISEs, is not in line with current views of the mechanism of the ISE response, or of the role of ion exchange in particular. The origin of this effect is unclear. Estimates are made for the concentration of ionized species (NO3− and TDA+) and, respectively, for the TDANO3 association constant, as well as for the species diffusion coefficients in the membrane.

Abstract
This paper describes an unexplored property of conductive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as ion-to-electron transducers in the context of potentiometric detection. Several conductive two-dimensional MOF analogues were drop-cast onto a glassy carbon electrode and then covered with an ion-selective membrane to form a potentiometric sensor. The resulting devices exhibited excellent sensing properties toward anions and cations, characterized by a near-Nernstian response and over 4 orders of magnitude linear range. Impedance and chronopotentiometric measurements revealed the presence of large bulk capacitance (204 ± 2 μF) and good potential stability (drift of 11.1 ± 0.5 μA/h). Potentiometric water test and contact angle measurements showed that this class of materials exhibited hydrophobicity and inhibited the formation of water layer at the electrode/membrane interface, resulting in a highly stable sensing response with a potential drift as low as 11.1 μA/h. The property of ion-to-electron transduction of conductive MOFs may form the basis for the development of this class of materials as promising components within ion-selective electrodes.

Abstract
A novel method for the intact immobilization of a very-thin and soft PVC membrane on a convex-shaped poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) surface is described. The present method using PVA film as a sacrificial layer allowed successful immobilization of an intact PVC membrane using an ionic liquid-based dye on only the convex-shaped PDMS surface without any deformation or increase of the inhomogeneity. In addition, two different kinds of PVC membranes were successfully immobilized simultaneously toward multiplexed detection.

Abstract
Despite being ubiquitous in the fields of chemistry and biology, the ion-specific effects of electrolytes pose major challenges for researchers. A lack of understanding about ion-specific surface interactions has hampered the development and application of materials for (bio-)chemical sensor applications. Here, we show that scaling a silicon nanotransistor sensor down to ~25 nm provides a unique opportunity to understand and exploit ion-specific surface interactions, yielding a surface that is highly sensitive to cations and inert to pH. The unprecedented sensitivity of these devices to Na+ and divalent ions can be attributed to an overscreening effect via molecular dynamics. The surface potential of multi-ion solutions is well described by the sum of the electrochemical potentials of each cation, enabling selective measurements of a target ion concentration without requiring a selective organic layer. We use these features to construct a blood serum ionogram for Na+, K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+, in an important step towards the development of a versatile, durable and mobile chemical or blood diagnostic tool.

Abstract
The seed layer plays a crucial role in achieving high electrical conductivity and ensuring higher performance of devices. In this study, we report fabrication of a solution-gated field-effect transistor (FET) sensor based on zinc oxide nanorods (ZnO NRs) modified iron oxide nanoparticles (α-Fe2O3 NPs) grown on a highly conductive sandwich-like seed layer (ZnO seed layer/Ag nanowires/ZnO seed layer). The sandwich-like seed layer and ZnO NRs modification with α-Fe2O3 NPs provide excellent conductivity and prevent possible ZnO NRs surface damage from low pH enzyme immobilization, respectively. The highly conductive solution-gated FET sensor employed the calmodulin (CaM) immobilization on the surface of α-Fe2O3-ZnO NRs for selective detection of calcium ions (Ca2+). The solution-gated FET sensor exhibited a substantial change in conductance upon introduction of different concentrations of Ca2+ and showed high sensitivity (416.8 μA cm-2 mM-1) and wide linear range (0.01-3.0 mM). In addition, the total Ca2+ concentration in water and serum samples was also measured. Compared to the analytically obtained data, our sensor was found to measure Ca2+ in the water and serum samples accurately, suggesting a potential alternative for Ca2+ determination in water and serum samples, specifically used for drinking/irrigation and clinical analysis.

Abstract
We report the synthesis and analytical application of the first Cu2+ -selective synthetic ion channel based on peptide-modified gold nanopores. A Cu2+ -binding peptide motif (Gly-Gly-His) along with two additional functional thiol derivatives inferring cation-permselectivity and hydrophobicity was self-assembled on the surface of gold nanoporous membranes comprising of about 5 nm diameter pores. These membranes were used to construct ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) with extraordinary Cu2+ selectivities, approaching six orders of magnitude over certain ions. Since all constituents are immobilized to a supporting nanoporous membrane, their leaching, that is a ubiquitous problem of conventional ionophore-based ISEs was effectively suppressed.

Abstract
Alkali and alkaline earth metal ion binding by an aromatic oligoamide foldamer was shown to induce its folding into a helical capsule. CD and NMR titrations revealed tight and selective binding of Mg2+. Crystallographic studies demonstrated that, depending on the metal, binding may involve the first or second coordination spheres of the metal hydrates.

Abstract
On the example of a colorimetric sodium assay, this work demonstrates the implementation of a classical cation-exchange optode relying on an ionophore-doped plasticized PVC membrane into a paper-based analytical device (PAD). An ion-selective optode (ISO) system has been arranged into a vertically-assembled PAD (vPAD) integrating a pH-buffering function. Capillary force-driven sample liquid transportation through the paper matrix enabled pH-adjustment prior to the optical detection of the analyte cation. Functionalized paper layers with inkjet-deposited ISO membranes were combined with whole device lamination to attain a stable ion-exchange equilibrium required for the theoretical behavior of ISOs. Whole device lamination limited rapid evaporation of sample liquid on vPADs to avoid an increase of target concentration. Sigmoidal response curves between 10-5 and 1 M of Na+ at pH 5.0-7.0 have been confirmed on vPADs, following the theory defined by the cation-exchange equilibrium reaction. Finally, the influence of the cellulosic paper substrate matrix acting as a cation-exchanger on the optode response behavior has been evaluated and compared with conventional plastic film optodes.

Abstract
Nanosensors present a biological monitoring method that is biocompatible, reversible, and nano-scale, and they offer many advantages over traditional organic indicators. Typical ionophore-based nanosensors incorporate nile-blue derivative pH indicators but suffer from photobleaching while quantum dot alternatives pose a potential toxicity risk. In order to address this challenge, sodium selective nanosensors containing carbon dots and a pH-sensitive quencher molecule were developed based on an ion-exchange theory and a decoupled recognition element from the pH indicator. Carbon dots were synthesized and integrated into nanosensors containing a pH-indicator, an analyte-binding ligand (ionophore), and a charge-balancing additive. These nanosensors are ion-selective against potassium (selectivity coefficient of 0.4) and lithium (selectivity coefficient of 0.9). Reversible nanosensor response to sodium is also demonstrated. The carbon dot nanosensors are resistant to changes in optical properties for at least 12 h and display stable selectivity to physiologically-relevant sodium (alpha = 0.5 of 200 mM NaCl) for a minimum of 6 days.

Abstract
We investigated the origin of the optical responses of a two-dimensional photonic crystal (2D-PhC) optode membrane ion sensor based on plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) containing lipophilic dye. We previously developed a highly sensitive potassium ion sensor. However, the contributions of various factors to the sensor's optical response could not be distinguished. Here, we synthesized a lipophilic dye with spectral changes that do not overlap with those of propagated light in the PhC. Using this synthesized dye excluded the contribution of light absorption by the dye to the peak intensity change of the ion sensor. In refractive index standard solutions, the bulk refractive index change upon ion extraction contributed negligibly. The contribution of diffracted light scattering by optical transparency change of the plasticized PVC upon ion extraction accounted for approximately 45% of the ion sensor's total response. These findings are important for the development of highly sensitive plasticized PVC-based 2D-PhC ion sensors.

Abstract
Wearable electronics offer new opportunities in a wide range of applications, especially sweat analysis using skin sensors. A fundamental challenge in these applications is the formation of sensitive and stable electrodes. In this article we report the development of a wearable sensor based on carbon nanotube (CNT) electrode arrays for sweat sensing. Solid-state ion selective electrodes (ISEs), sensitive to Na+ ions, were prepared by drop coating plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) doped with ionophore and ion exchanger on CNT electrodes. The ion selective membrane (ISM) filled the intertubular spaces of the highly porous CNT film and formed an attachment that was stronger than that achieved with flat Au, Pt, or carbon electrodes. Concentration of the ISM solution used influenced the attachment to the CNT film, the ISM surface morphology, and the overall performance of the sensor. Sensitivity of 56 ± 3 mV/decade to Na+ ions was achieved. Optimized solid-state reference electrodes (REs), suitable for wearable applications, were prepared by coating CNT electrodes with colloidal dispersion of Ag/AgCl, agarose hydrogel with 0.5 M NaCl, and a passivation layer of PVC doped with NaCl. The CNT-based REs had low sensitivity (-1.7 ± 1.2 mV/decade) toward the NaCl solution and high repeatability and were superior to bare Ag/AgCl, metals, carbon, and CNT films, reported previously as REs. CNT-based ISEs were calibrated against CNT-based REs, and the short-term stability of the system was tested. We demonstrate that CNT-based devices implemented on a flexible support are a very attractive platform for future wearable technology devices.

Abstract
Redox-active catechols are bioinspired precursors for ortho-quinones that are characterized by higher discharge potentials than para-quinones, the latter being extensively used as organic cathode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). Here, this study demonstrates that the rational molecular design of copolymers bearing catechol- and Li+ ion-conducting anionic pendants endow redox-active polymers (RAPs) with ultrarobust electrochemical energy storage features when combined to carbon nanotubes as a flexible, binder-, and metal current collector-free buckypaper electrode. The importance of the structure and functionality of the RAPs on the battery performances in LIBs is discussed. The structure-optimized RAPs can store high-capacities of 360 mA h g-1 at 5C and 320 mA h g-1 at 30C in LIBs. The high ion and electron mobilities within the buckypaper also enable to register 96 mA h g-1 (24% capacity retention) at an extreme C-rate of 600C (6 s for total discharge). Moreover, excellent cyclability is noted with a capacity retention of 98% over 3400 cycles at 30C. The high capacity, superior active-material utilization, ultralong cyclability, and excellent rate performances of RAPs-based electrode clearly rival most of the state-of-the-art Li+ ion organic cathodes, and opens up new horizons for large-scalable fabrication of electrode materials for ultrarobust Li storage.

Abstract
Optical nanoparticle (NP)-based sensors have been widely implemented as tools for detection of targeted ions and biomolecules. The NP sensing platform offer a modular design that can incorporate different sensing components for greater target specificity and the ability to tune the dynamic range, as well as encapsulation of multiple dyes to generate a ratiometric signal with varying spectra. Despite these advantages, demonstrating quantitative ion imaging for intracellular measurement still possess a major challenge. Here, we describe fundamentals that enable intracellular validation of this approach using ion-selective nanosensors for investigating calcium (Ca2+) as a model ion. While conventional indicators can improve individual aspects of indicator performance such as Kd, wavelength, and ratiometric measurements, the use of NP sensors can achieve combined benefits of addressing these issues simultaneously. The nanosensor incorporates highly calcium-selective ionophores and two fluorescence indicators that act as signal transducers to facilitate quantitative ratiometric imaging. For intracellular Ca2+ application, the sensors are fine-tuned to physiological sensing range, and live-cell imaging and quantification are demonstrated in HeLa cells loaded with nanosensors and their responsiveness to carbachol-evoked store release (~400 nM). The current nanosensor design thus provides a promising sensing platform for real-time detection and optical determination of intracellular ions.

Abstract
Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry ESI-MS is a powerful technique for the characterization of macromolecules and their noncovalent binding with guest ions. We herein evaluate the feasibility of using ESI-MS as a screening tool for predicting potentiometric selectivities of ionophores. Ion-selective electrodes based on the cyclic peptide, cyclosporin A, were developed, and their potentiometric selectivity pattern was evaluated. Optimized electrodes demonstrated near-Nernstian slopes with micromolar detection limits toward calcium. ESI-MS and ESI-MS/MS were employed to determine the relative association strengths of cyclosporin A with various cations. The observed MS intensities of ion-ionophore complexes correlate favorably with the potentiometric selectivity pattern that was demonstrated by cyclosporin-based electrodes. This correlation was found to hold true for other established ionophores, such as valinomycin and benzo-18-crown-6. Taken together, these experiments demonstrate that mass spectrometry could be used to predict the selectivity patterns of new ionophores for potentiometric and optical ion sensors. Further, this approach could be useful in screening mixtures or libraries of newly-synthesized compounds to identify selective ionophores.

Abstract
A general anion-sensing platform is reported based on a portable and cost-effective ion-selective optode and a smartphone detector equipped with a color analysis app. In contrast to traditional anion-selective optodes using a hydrophobic polymer and/or plasticizer to dissolve hydrophobic sensing elements, the new optode relies on hydrophilic cellulose paper. The anion ionophore and a lipophilic pH indicator are inkjet-printed and adsorbed on paper and form a "dry" hydrophobic sensing layer. Porous cellulose sheets also allow the sensing site to be modified with dried buffer that prevents any sample pH dependence of the observed color change. A highly selective fluoride optode using an AlIII -porphyrin ionophore is examined as an initial example of this new anion sensing platform for measurements of fluoride levels in drinking water samples. Apart from Lewis acid-base recognition, hydrogen bonding recognition is also compatible with this sensing platform.

Abstract
In this study, graphene Th(IV) phosphate was prepared by sol–gel precipitation method. The ion-exchange behavior of this cation-exchanger was studied by investigating properties like ion-exchange capacity for various metal ions, the effect of eluent concentration, elution behavior, and thermal effect on ion-exchange capacity (IEC). Several physicochemical properties as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) study, thermal studies, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies were also carried out. The material possessed an IEC of 1.56 meq·dry·g−1 of the exchanger and was found to be nano-composite. The selectivity studies showed that the material is selective towards Pb(II) ions. The selectivity of this cation-exchanger was demonstrated in the binary separation of Pb(II) ions from mixture with other metal ions. The recovery was found to be both quantitative and reproducible.

Abstract
Ionophore-based ion-exchange nanosphere emulsion was prepared and tested for the determination of thiocyanate. The emulsified nanosphere contained the cationic additive tridodecylmethyl ammonium chloride (TDMAC), the plasticizer, and the ionophore Mn(III)-salophen or Mn(III)-salen. This emulsion was used as titrating agent for thiocyanate complexation with ionophores, which could be transduced using an ion-selective electrode (ISE) as an indicator electrode for the end point detection. The method showed no need for pH control and reliable selectivity, as thiocyanate could be determined in presence of other interfering ions with high accuracy. As well, the emulsion was stable and could be used for approximately couple of weeks. The developed emulsion could be used for the determination of thiocyanate in human saliva with standard deviation <4%. In sum, the proposed method could be used as an alternative for the argentometric titration and would open new avenues for the determination of neutral, anionic, and cationic species without necessity for water soluble ligands or pH control.

Abstract
Ion-selective optodes (ISOs), the optical analog of ion-selective electrodes, have played an increasingly important role in chemical and biochemical analysis. Here we extend this technique to ion-selective photoacoustic optodes (ISPAOs) that serve at the same time as fluorescence-based ISOs, and apply it specifically to potassium (K+). Notably, the potassium ion is one of the most abundant cations in biological systems, involved in numerous physiological and pathological processes. Furthermore, it has been recently reported that the presence of abnormal extracellular potassium concentrations in tumors suppresses the immune responses and thus suppresses immunotherapy. However, unfortunately, sensors capable of providing potassium images in vivo are still a future proposition. Here, we prepared an ion-selective potassium nanosensor (NS) aimed at in vivo photoacoustic (PA) chemical imaging of the extracellular environment, while being also capable of fluorescence based intracellular ion-selective imaging. This potassium nanosensor (K+ NS) modulates its optical properties (absorbance and fluorescence) according to the potassium concentration. The K+ NS is capable of measuring potassium, in the range of 1 mM to 100 mM, with high sensitivity and selectivity, by ISPAO based measurements. Also, a near infrared dye surface modified K+ NS allows fluorescence-based potassium sensing in the range of 20 mM to 1 M. The K+ NS serves thus as both PA and fluorescence based nanosensor, with response across the biologically relevant K+ concentrations, from the extracellular 5 mM typical values (through PA imaging) to the intracellular 150 mM typical values (through fluorescence imaging).

Abstract
A new isoindoline-based highly efficient turn-on fluorescent chemodosimeter S with a thioamide functionality as a binding site for selective detection of Hg2+ ion has been developed. The chemodosimeter S showed an extreme selectivity for detection of Hg2+ ion among various two and three-valent metal ions in acetonitrile/water (70/30, v/v). It was found that, in the presence of Hg2+ ion the non-fluorescent chemodosimeter S was efficiently and rapidly desulfurized to the corresponding highly fluorescent amide 1. A good linear relationship was shown between the fluorescence intensity and the concentration of Hg2+ within the range of 0-1μM, with a detection limit of 2.03×10-8M.
