Bayesian Fusion Model Enhanced Codfish Classification Using Near Infrared and Raman Spectrum

In this study, a Bayesian-based decision fusion technique was developed for the first time to quickly and non-destructively identify codfish using near infrared (NIRS) and Raman spectroscopy (RS). NIRS and RS spectra from 320 codfish samples were collected, and separate partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) models were developed to establish the relationship between the raw data and cod identity for each spectral technique. Three decision fusion methods: decision fusion, data layer or feature layer, were tested and compared. The decision fusion model based on the Bayesian algorithm (NIRS-RS-B) was developed on the optimal discrimination features of NIRS and RS data (NIRS-RS) extracted by the PLS-DA method whereas the other fusion models followed conventional, non-Bayesian approaches. The Bayesian model showed enhanced classification metrics (92% sensitivity, 98% specificity, 98% accuracy) that were significantly superior to those demonstrated by any of other two spectroscopic methods (NIRS, RS) and the two data fusion methods (data layer fused, NIRS-RS-D, or feature layer fused, NIRS-RS-F). This novel proposed approach can provide an alternative classification for codfish and potentially other food speciation cases.

Fabricating of Fe3O4@Ag-MOF nanocomposite and evaluating its adsorption activity for removal of doxorubicin

The purpose of this research was to investigate the doxorubicin (DOX) adsorption behavior on Fe3O4@Ag-Metal Organic Framework (Fe₃O₄@Ag-MOF). This adsorbent was effectively prepared using a simple synthetic process. Many instruments, including FTIR, XRD, SEM, TEM, and XPS, were used to characterized the new Fe₃O₄@Ag-MOF. Additionally, the presented Fe₃O₄@Ag-surface MOF's area was shown to be 586.06 m2/g with a size of around 43 nm. The composite that was made has magnetic properties that were quite strong (63.3 emu/g). The produced Fe₃O₄@Ag-MOF was discovered to have a fantastic ability to adsorb the anti-cancer drug DOX, with a 1.72 mmol/g (934.85 mg/g) adsorption capacity. On the basis of changes in temperature, pH, and DOX concentration, the DOX adsorption behavior mechanism was investigated. The adsorption capacity of Fe₃O₄@Ag-MOF for DOX was greater at pH 7.0, according to experimental data. The adsorption equilibrium also demonstrated that the Langmuir adsorption was regulated the best fit to the extracted data compared with the other models. Additionally, the activation energy of adsorption for DOX onto Fe₃O₄@Ag-MOF was determined, indicating the chemisorption process. The adsorption kinetics was shown in the well-known kinetic model of the pseudo-second-order. The adsorption thermodynamic measurements were documented according to according to the enthalpy (ΔH°), entropy(ΔS°), and Gibbs free energy (ΔG°) parameters demonstrated that the reaction was endothermic and spontaneous thermodynamic. The adsorption of DOX onto Fe₃O₄@Ag-MOF from real water samples (tap water, effluent wastewater, and influence wastewater) were investigated. It's interesting that the synthetic adsorbent had great recyclability 72.6 percent in the fifth cycle indicating that it was highly recyclable. After adsorption, the typical Fe₃O₄@Ag-MOF XRD peak intensities and locations were mostly unchanged throughout adsorption indicates the crystalline phase remained steady. The results indicated that Fe₃O₄@Ag-MOF were a good candidate for adsorbing the DOX and treating wastewater.

Synthesis, antioxidant, in silico and computational investigation of 2,5-dihydroxyacetophenone derived chloro-substituted hydroxychalcones, hydroxyflavanones and hydroxyflavindogenides

An imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and their elimination by antioxidants damages the cell and infect whole organism. The biological defence system against oxidative stress injury is Kelch-like ECH associated protein 1 (Keap1)-nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)-antioxidant response elements (ARE) pathways. Antioxidants activate the Nrf2-ARE-Keap1 pathway and suppress the oxidative stress. Flavonoids are well known medicinal compounds inheriting antioxidant efficacy and wide spectrum of pharmacological activities. The study is aimed to synthesise, characterize and evaluate pharmacological activities of synthesized chloro-derivatives of flavonoids. Chloro-derivatives of flavonoids were synthesized and characterized by IR, ¹H NMR and ¹³C NMR. Antioxidant potential of each synthesized compound was evaluated and then subjected to molecular docking with Keap1 (PDB ID: 2FLU) for the activation of Nrf2 and computational studies were performed by using DFT approach. Among the synthesized compounds compound 1a exhibited lower IC₅₀ value. While docking and computational studies infer that compound 3c is a good Nrf2 activator and radical scavenger with highest docking score and lower energy gaps and IP values compared to references. Hence, it might be considered for further molecular studies for the treatment of inflammatory diseases through Nrf2-ARE-Keap1 pathway. Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Study of Synthesis, Characterization, DFT, and In Vitro Biological Activity of Cu(II), Co(II), and Fe(II) Metal Complexes Based on Heterocyclic Azo Pyrazole Dye Ligand

A new azo dye ligand was synthesized by coupling 5-amino-3-methyl-1-phenylpyrazole with a diazonium ion of 2-amino-1-naphthalene sulfonic acid. Its Co(II), Fe(II), and Cu(II) complexes were also synthesized. This ligand and its complexes were characterized based on elemental analysis, IR, 1H NMR, UV-vis spectra, and thermogravimetric analysis. The data showed that the proposed complexes have an octahedral geometry around the central metal ion. The nonelectrolytic nature of the complexes was confirmed by molar conductance measurement. X-ray powder diffraction indicates that Co(II) and Fe(II) complexes are amorphous in nature, whereas the Cu(II) complex has crystalline and amorphous phases. The bond strength and molecular stability between the interaction of metal ions and the ligand were investigated by density functional theory (DFT). The in vitro antibacterial activity of the ligand and complexes was tested against two Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus) and two Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Neisseria gonorrhoeae) and a fungus (Candida albicans). The Cu(II) complex exhibited a high antimicrobial effect against all tested microorganisms. The DNA fragmentation percentage and cytotoxic activity against human liver cancer cells (HepG2) were evaluated. All tested compounds showed potential anticancer activity, and the Co(II) complex showed better activity results than the other tested compounds, with IC50 = 19.55 μg/mL.

Bioactive Properties of Extracts from Plectranthus barbatus (Coleus forskohlii) Roots Received Using Various Extraction Methods

The aim of this study was to verify various extraction methods: shaking water bath extraction (SWA), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and microwave assisted extraction (MAE), and their parameters to optimize the extraction yield as well as maximize the concentration of polyphenols in Plectranthus barbatus extracts. Extracts were obtained from dried roots of P. barbatus in various degrees of fragmentation and analyzed for content of polyphenols, antioxidant capacity and flavonoids. Additionally, phenolic compounds in extracts were analyzed using the UHPLC-DAD-ESI-MS/MS method. The conducted research showed that roots of P. barbatus are rich in polyphenolic compounds. A total of 15 phenolic compounds, belonging to the group of phenolic acids and their derivatives, were identified. The extraction yield was similar for all extraction methods and averaged 31%. Irrespective of the extraction method, the yield was the lowest in the case of using 80% ethanol as the solvent. The extracts obtained from the finer fraction were characterized by a higher antioxidant capacity as well as a higher concentration of polyphenolic compounds including flavonoids. UAE seems to be the most effective method for extraction of polyphenols from P. barbatus roots. Regardless of the extraction method, ethanol was a better extractant than distilled water. All ethanolic extracts were characterized by a high antioxidant capacity. The 80% ethanol solution was considered the best solvent for the extraction of flavonoids, while the 40% and 60% ethanol solutions were sufficient for the effective extraction of polyphenolic compounds in general.

Highly efficient Ni-Mo-P composite rare earth elements electrode as electrocatalytic cathode for oil-based drill sludge treatment

It is considered an effective strategy to improve electrochemical performance that introducing rare elements into metal catalysts, which would provide abundant electrochemical active sites and be a benefit for redox reactions. A new Ni-Mo-P composite electrode material modified with rare earth elements (light rare earth Nd and heavy rare earth Yb) was prepared, evaluating the current density of direct current electrodeposition, the doping ratio of Yb and Nd, and the cyclic voltammetry deposition (CVD) cycle numbers on electrode structure and electrochemical performance. The results showed that the electrode has the most obvious amorphous state, the lowest hydrogen evolution overpotential (41.5 mV vs Ag/AgCl) and charge transfer resistance (15.74 Ω/cm²), and remarkable stability when the molar ratio of Yb and Nd was 8:2 and the 20 cycle numbers under the CVD condition. The electrochemical performance and characterization of the electrode showed that there was a good synergistic effect between rare earth elements (Yb, Nd) and Ni-Mo-P alloys. The oil-based drill sludge (OBDS) treatment indicated that the organic matter content is significantly reduced by using the above-modified electrode as the cathode, and the COD and petroleum removal rate can reach up to 85.4 ± 1.2% and 66.2 ± 5.9%. The effect of degradation for aliphatic hydrocarbon was better than aromatic hydrocarbons and no other intermediates are produced during the degradation, which may eventually mineralize the organic matter. This research provided technical support for the preparation of new Ni-Mo-P electrodes modified with rare earth elements and confirmed that electrocatalytic technology was a suitable method for OBDS treatment.

Identifying global status and research hotspots of heavy metal remediation: A phase upgrade study

Impact of heavy metal (HM) pollution and its understanding on environment as well as human beings has grown a lot during the last few decades. The goal of this study is to create a scientometric study on heavy metal contamination, in the period 1989 to 2020, in order to provide futuristic goals for the new researchers on wastewater treatment. For this, a search was conducted in the Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus databases, related to heavy metal pollution. Totally, 37,154 records were collected during the study period from 1989 to 2020. The findings revealed that China, the United States, and India has most referenced papers across a wide range of trans disciplinary issues such as toxicity, technology, and pollution. As a result, this study concludes that more research on various treatment methods is required in order to obtain high-quality water for consumption and routine activities, with the incorporation of various treatment tasks poses various challenges for the upcoming future studies.

Modelling of Propylene Polymerization in a Loop Reactor on the Titanium–Magnesium Catalyst Taking into Account the Transformation of Active Centers

The volume of consumed and produced polymers is increasing in the market every day. This is due to the indispensability and convenience of polymers in all industries. The article presents the distinctive features of the use of titanium–magnesium catalysts in the process of propylene polymerization. A mathematical model of the polypropylene polymerization is presented. This model is the basis of creating an expert control complex of the propylene–ethylene block copolymer (PEBC) synthesis process and allowing a quantitative connection to be made between technological parameters of reactors, which allows control of the technological mode with the acceptable accuracy. The experiment catalytic system is microspheric titanium trichloride (MS-TiCl3) and co-catalyst-diethylaluminum chloride. Dependences of different parameters on others are illustrated. The result of the research is as follows: according to the calculations, when increasing the number of blocks in the chain, the average values of molecular weights increase and the polydispersity index decreases; changing the values of the transformation rate coefficients of active centers by the donor k 12 and k 21 allows research into the effect of the donor type.

Natural essential oils as a new therapeutic tool in colorectal cancer

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most revalent type of cancer in the world and the second most common cause of cancer death (about 1 million per year). Historically, natural compounds and their structural analogues have contributed to the development of new drugs useful in the treatment of various diseases, including cancer. Essential oils are natural odorous products made up of a complex mixture of low molecular weight compounds with recognized biological and pharmacological properties investigated also for the prevention and treatment of cancer. The aim of this paper is to highlight the possible role of essential oils in CRC, their composition and the preclinical studies involving them. It has been reviewed the preclinical pharmacological studies to determine the experimental models used and the anticancer potential mechanisms of action of natural essential oils in CRC. Searches were performed in the following databases PubMed/Medline, Web of science, TRIP database, Scopus, Google Scholar using appropriate MeSH terms. The results of analyzed studies showed that EOs exhibited a wide range of bioactive effects like cytotoxicity, antiproliferative, and antimetastatic effects on cancer cells through various mechanisms of action. This updated review provides a better quality of scientific evidence for the efficacy of EOs as chemotherapeutic/chemopreventive agents in CRC. Future translational clinical studies are needed to establish the effective dose in humans as well as the most suitable route of administration for maximum bioavailability and efficacy. Given the positive anticancer results obtained from preclinical pharmacological studies, EOs can be considered efficient complementary therapies in chemotherapy in CRC.

Citrullus colocynthis (L.) Schrad (Bitter Apple): An Overview of its Traditional Uses, Phytochemistry and Pharmacological Potential

Citrullus colocynthis (L.) Schrad is an important cucurbit plant, commonly distributed in the sandy areas of the world. In the Indian continent it is mainly found in the North West, the Punjab and in Central and southern India. The Citrullus colocynthis plant is usually known for its traditional uses as a remedy in the treatment of asthma, diabetes, common cold, leprosy, cough, bronchitis, joint pain, jaundice, cancer, toothache, mastitis, and in gastrointestinal disorders such as gastroenteritis, indigestion, dysentery, constipation, colic pain and other microbial infections. Phytochemicaly the compounds like glycosides, alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolic acids fatty acids, carbohydrates and essential oils were reported from the plant and the main components isolated from the Citrullus colocynthis plant are Cucurbitacins. The plant has been studied extensively for its wide range of pharmacological activities, which include anticancer, antidiabetic, antioxidant, cytotoxic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory antilipidemic, and insecticide but the therapeutic potential for cardiovascular, gut, airways and many other diseases remain to be explored.

Synthesis, DFT, Biological and Molecular Docking Analysis of Novel Manganese(II), Iron(III), Cobalt(II), Nickel(II), and Copper(II) Chelate Complexes Ligated by 1-(4-Nitrophenylazo)-2-naphthol

Novelmanganese(II), iron(III), cobalt(II), nickel(II), and copper(II) chelates were synthesized and studied using elemental analysis (EA), infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and conductivity, as well as magnetic measurements and thermogravimetric analysis (TG). The azo-ligand 1-[(4-nitrophenyl)diazenyl]-2-naphthol (HL) chelates to the metal ions via the nitrogen and oxygen centers of the azo group and the hydroxyl, respectively. The amounts of H₂O present and its precise position were identified by thermal analysis. Density functional theory (DFT) was employed to theoretically elucidate the molecular structures of the ligand and the metal complexes. Furthermore, the quantum chemical parameters were also evaluated. The antimicrobial properties were evaluated against a group of fungal and bacterial microbes. Interestingly, the bioactivity of the complexes is enhanced compared to free ligands. Within this context, the CuL complex manifested the lowest activity, whereas the FeL complex had the greatest. Molecular docking was used to foretell the drugs' binding affinity for the structure of Escherichia coli (PDB ID: 1hnj). Protein-substrate interactions were resolved, and binding energies were accordingly calculated.

A critical review of selected preconcentration techniques used for selenium determination in analytical samples

Selenium (Se) is considered to be an essential trace element needed for all living organisms. The importance, deficiency, and toxic effects of Se mainly depend on its quantity and chemical nature. It has been observed that the inorganic versions of Se are more hazardous than the organic versions. This review is mainly focused on the application of different extraction methods used for Se extraction and determination such as microextraction, solid-phase extraction (SPE), and their modified modes in the last 12 years. The use of different dispersive medium (magnetic field, ultrasonic radiation, and vortex agitator) to enhance Se separation is also part of this review. The usage of environmentally friendly solvents such as supramolecular solvents, hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (DESs), and ionic liquids (ILs) are also the focus of attention in this review. This review is also emphasized the application of advanced microextraction methods, particularly liquid-phase microextraction (LPME). The most recent advances in LPME extraction techniques for Se in various environmental samples, as well as their prospects, are reviewed. Additionally, a summary of cheap, simple, and accurate techniques that have not yet been used to determine small amounts of Se has been provided.

Modified kaolin hydrogel for Cu2+ adsorption

Removal of Cu2+ ions from contaminated water is an important but challenging task. This study reports the synthesis of a composite hydrogel from two natural polysaccharides, namely, sodium alginate and chitosan, using inexpensive kaolin as a raw material and polyacrylamide as a modifier. The hydrogel had a high adsorption capacity and selectivity for Cu2+. The composite hydrogel was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model was the most suitable model for the kinetic results, and the Langmuir isotherm model was the most representative of the sorption system. The results revealed that the adsorption process was mainly controlled by chemisorption. The maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbent was 106.4 mg·g−1. Therefore, this study presents a new perspective on the application of composite hydrogels as Cu2+ adsorbents.

Natural Antioxidants, Tyrosinase and Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitors from Cercis glabra Leaves

Cercis glabra is a plant belonging to the legume family, whose flowers and barks are commonly used as food and traditional Chinese medicines. However, its leaves are usually disposed of as wastes. This research comprehensively investigated the bioactive constituents of C. glabra leaves, and two new phenolic, ceroffesters A-B (1-2) and thirteen known compounds (3-15) were isolated. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods such as nuclear magnetic resonance (1D NMR and 2D NMR), high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectra (HR-ESI-MS), optical rotatory dispersion (ORD) and electronic circular dichroism (ECD). All of them were assessed for their antioxidant activities through ABTS, DPPH and PTIO methodologies, and evaluated for inhibitory activities against two enzymes (mushroom tyrosinase and acetylcholinesterase). As a result, compounds 3-6, 10 and 13 exhibited evident antioxidant activities. Meanwhile, compounds 5, 10 and 13 showed the most potent tyrosinase inhibitory activities, with IC₅₀ of 0.64, 0.65 and 0.59 mM, and compared with the positive control of 0.63 mM (kojic acid). In the initial concentration of 1 mg/mL, compounds 3, 5 and 6 demonstrated moderate inhibitory activities against acetylcholinesterase with 85.27 ± 0.06%, 83.65 ± 0.48% and 82.21 ± 0.09%, respectively, compared with the positive control of 91.17 ± 0.23% (donepezil). These bioactive components could be promising antioxidants, tyrosinase and acetylcholinesterase inhibitors.

Progress and current trends in the electrochemical determination of phosphate ions for environmental and biological monitoring applications

The determination of phosphate ions in biological testing is critical for environmental safety. A reliable and accurate method is required to measure the true phosphate ion concentrations; in this regard, the electrochemical method is preferable because of its simple operation, fast response, and high sensitivity. By compiling existing electroanalytical techniques, researchers can compare the advantages and disadvantages of each method. This review examines the progress and recent advances in electrochemical sensing strategies adapted for the determination of phosphate ions in the environmental and during biological monitoring. We first discuss the history of phosphorus and the development of methods to detect phosphates. The recognition elements of phosphate ion sensors for environmental applications include metal-based, nanomaterial-based, carbon-based, and enzymatic electrodes. Phosphate determination in biological samples, such as blood serum, drugs, and other biological fluids, such as urine and saliva, as well as phosphate esters, is also discussed. The final part of our review addresses the current challenges that phosphate sensing technology faces and illustrates future opportunities for more reliable phosphate detection.

A Review on Spike and Recovery Method in Analytical Method Development and Validation

In multidisciplinary science, Analytical approaches based on spike and recovery (SAR) play a substantial role in analytical testing. The spike and recovery method is an important technique for analyzing and accessing the accuracy of analytical methods. The goal of this review seeks to provide clarity on the role of SAR methods in the forensic science discipline. Recent literature has been searched from numerous databases like Google, Web of Sciences, Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar, and SciFinder. Websites like Science Direct are critically explored to gather scientific reports related to SAR utility. This review discusses the applications and current role of the SAR methods in Forensic Toxicology. It is suggested as one of the major parameters in the validation of the analytical method. SAR methodology is extremely important for the identification and quantitation of analytes in the sample matrix. Moreover, the extension of SAR methods to any scientific discipline is equally important for quality assurance. All relevant processes like method development and its optimization, quality control, and assurance rely on SAR-based studies. However, the method requires better apprehension and needs to be utilized using standard guidelines.

Synthesis, Characterization and Antibacterial Activities of Ferrocene Ligands and Their Binuclear Complexes

6-Chloro-2-ferrocenyl-1H-benzimidazole and (E)-((4-chloro-2-hydroxyphenylimino)methyl)ferrocene ligands and their Fe(III), Co(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Pd(II) complexes were synthesized. The structure of ligands and metal complexes has been investigated by different methods. In addition, magnetic moment, molar conductivity measurements and antibacterial activity of the ligands and the complexes were investigated.

Investigation of Trace Elements in Vegan Foods by ICP-MS After Microwave Digestion

Veganism is gaining popularity around the world day by day. Vegan nutrition is a diet in which not all animal foods are used. A vegan diet does not contain meat, fish, milk and dairy products, and eggs and consists of vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes, and nuts. Vegan diets maintain energy balances in a wide variety of plant foods. So, health problems can be seen due to nutrient and mineral deficiencies in the long-term continuation of the vegan diet. Due to insufficient intake of vitamins and minerals such as vitamin D, vitamin B12, calcium, iron, and zinc, energy and protein balance in the body may not be achieved by vegan individuals. The contents of aluminum, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, arsenic, mercury, cadmium, and lead have been analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) in 10 different vegan foods purchased from Turkey. Certified reference material (1547 peach leaves) was used for validating the digestion procedure. Dry, wet, and microwave processes were compared, and it was found that the microwave digestion method was the best. Element levels in the analyzed samples were found below the legal limits. The purpose of this work is to investigate the trace element content of various foods used in vegan nutrition.

Assessing the effect of urbanization on regional-scale surface water-groundwater interaction and nitrate transport

Identifying regional-scale surface water-groundwater interactions (SGI) is vital for predicting anthropogenic effects on surface water bodies and underlying aquifers. However, large-scale water and nutrient flux studies rely on surface water or groundwater-focused models. This study aims to model the effect of urbanization, which is usually accompanied by high groundwater abstraction and surface water pollution, particularly in the developing world, on a regional-scale SGI and nitrate loading. In the study area, the urban expansion increased by over 3% in the last decade. The integrated SWAT-MODFLOW model, Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) and Modular Finite-Difference Groundwater Flow (MODFLOW) coupling code, was used to assess SGI. By coupling SWAT-MODFLOW with Reactive Transport in 3-Dimensions, the nutrient loading to the river from point and non-point sources was also modeled. Basin average annual results show that groundwater discharge declined with increasing groundwater abstraction and increased with Land use/Land cover (LULC) changes. Groundwater recharge decreased significantly in the Belge season (February to May), and the river seepage and groundwater discharge decreased correspondingly. High spatiotemporal changes in SGI and nitrate loading were found under the combined LULC and groundwater abstraction scenarios. The water yield decreased by 15%. In a large part of the region, the nitrate loading increased by 17–250%. Seasonally controlled groundwater abstraction and water quality monitoring are essential in this region.

Absence of significant association of trace elements in nails with urinary KIM-1 biomarker among residents of Addis Ababa in Upper Awash Basin, Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study

The Akaki River in the Upper Awash Basin, which flows through Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia, has been highly polluted by sewage from factories and residential areas. A population-based cross-sectional study was used to assess the association between trace elements and kidney injury from residents living in polluted areas downstream (Akaki-Kality) versus upstream (Gullele) in Sub-Cities of Addis Ababa. A total of 95 individuals (53 from Akaki-Kality and 42 from Gullele) were included in the study. Kidney injury molecule 1 (KIM-1), lead, arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, lead, manganese, zinc, iron, copper, chromium and nickel were evaluated in residents' urine and nail samples. A large proportion (74%) of the sample population contained KIM-1, including 81% residents in Akaki-Kality and 64% residents in Gullele. KIM-1 was, however, not significantly different (p = 0.05) between the two Sub-Cities, with median of 0.224 ng/mL in Akaki-Kality and 0.152 ng/mL in Gullele. Most of the analyzed elements, except Pb, As, Cd and Co, were found in all of the nail samples, with median (µg/g) in the range of 442‒714 Fe, 97.0‒246 Zn, 11.6‒24.1 Mn, 4.49‒5.85 Cu, 1.46‒1.66 Cr and 1.22‒1.41 Ni. The high incidence of KIM-1 indicates a potential for long term renal tubular damage among residents of the Sub-Cities. The concentrations of the elements in nails were, however, not significantly associated (p = 0.05) with the corresponding levels of KIM-1 in urine. Hence, the observed KIM-1 might be related to exposure to toxic substances or factors other than those included in this study.

Groundwater contamination pathways of phthalates and bisphenol A: origin, characteristics, transport, and fate - A review

Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) or phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA) are emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) that may harm biota and human health. Humans can be exposed to these contaminants by drinking water consumption from water sources such as groundwater. Before their presence in aquifer systems, phthalates and BPA can be found in many matrices due to anthropogenic activities, which result in long-term transport to groundwater reservoirs by different mechanisms and reaction processes. The worldwide occurrence of phthalates and BPA concentrations in groundwater have ranged from 0.1 × 10^-3 to 3 203.33 µg L^-1 and from 0.09 × 10^-3 to 228.04 µg L^-1, respectively. Therefore, the aim of this review is to describe the groundwater contamination pathways of phthalates and BPA from the main environmental sources to groundwater. Overall, this article provides an overview that integrates phthalate and BPA environmental cycling, from their origin to human reception via groundwater consumption. Additionally, in this review, the readers can use the information provided as a principal basis for existing policy ratification and for governments to develop legislation that may incorporate these endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) as priority contaminants. Indeed, this may trigger the enactment of regulatory guidelines and public policies that help to reduce the exposure of these EDCs in humans by drinking water consumption.

In vitro anti-HIV and cytotoxic effects of pure compounds isolated from Croton macrostachyus Hochst. Ex Delile

Croton macrostachyus is an important plant in traditional African medicine, widely utilized to treat a variety of diseases. In Kenya, HIV-infected patients use leaf and root decoctions of the plant as a cure for cough, back pain, bleeding, skin diseases, warts, pneumonia, and wounds. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-HIV activities and cytotoxic effects of extracts and chemical constituents isolated from C. macrostachyus. In our previous study we demonstrated that the hexane, CH₂Cl₂, ethyl acetate and methanol soluble fractions of a 1:1 v/v/ CH₂Cl₂/MeOH crude extracts of the leaves and stem bark of C. macrostachyus exhibited potent anti-HIV activities against HIV-1 with IC₅₀ values ranging from 0.02–8.1 μg/mL and cytotoxicity effects against MT-4 cells ranging from IC₅₀ = 0.58–174 μg/mL. Hence, hexane soluble extract of 1:1 v/v/ CH₂Cl₂/MeOH crude extract of the leaves of C. macrostachyus, that was more potent against HIV-1 at IC₅₀ = 0.02 μg/mL was subjected to column chromatography leading to the isolation of 2-methoxy benzyl benzoate (1), lupenone (2), lupeol acetate (3), betulin (4), lupeol (5), sitosterol (6) and stigmasterol (7). Lupenone (2), lupeol acetate (3) and betulin (4) exhibited anti-HIV-1 inhibition at IC₅₀ = 4.7 nM, 4.3 and 4.5 μg/mL respectively. The results obtained from this study support the potential of C. macrostachyus, as a source of anti-HIV constituents.

An eco-friendly removal of Cd(II) utilizing banana pseudo-fibre and Moringa bark as indigenous green adsorbent and modelling of adsorption by artificial neural network

Heavy metal-contaminated water can be effectively treated using adsorbents made from abundantly available biomass. The present investigation was carried out to adsorb Cd(II) from synthetic solution by banana pseudo-stem (BP) and Moringa oleifera stem bark (MB). Adsorption efficiencies of both adsorbents were studied in the batch reactor by conducting experiments to determine the consequences of changes of pH, adsorbent dosages, initial Cd(II) concentrations, incubation time, and temperature. The process parameters were tuned to attain the highest possible removal percentage. The characterization of the adsorbents was performed by utilizing Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) for the fresh and metal-loaded adsorbents. Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) was employed to calculate the amount of Cd(II) in an aqueous solution. The experimental data were entirely consistent with the pseudo-second-order model for BP and MB. The findings of the study illustrated the better adsorption efficiency of BP-derived adsorbent (≈ 99%) at optimum conditions over the MB (≈ 97%), and the corresponding adsorption capacities were 11.98 and 7.04 mg/g, respectively. The 4 (four) well-known isotherm models were attempted both in linear and non-linear forms. BP (R² =0.995) and MB (R² =0.994) were found to be best described by the Freundlich isotherm, which was selected based on the highest R² value. In thermodynamic studies, ΔH and ΔS were calculated for both the adsorbents. Cd(II) adsorption on BP and MB was endothermic, as evidenced by the positive ΔH. Finally, the prediction of the removal percentage was made by the artificial neural network (ANN) modelling. The present work developed regionally derived waste materials which are helpful for small-scale industrial units for their waste management in an economical and sustainable way.

Proficient exclusion of pesticide using humic acid-modified magnetite nanoparticles from aqueous solution

Extensive dispersal of the pesticides to shield the different types of vegetation from pests has increased the production but at the same it has resulted in an increase in environmental pollution. Consequently, it is necessary to eliminate these undesired pollutants from the environment. The current investigation offers the synthesis of humic acid-coated magnetite nanoparticles towards effective removal of the most common insecticide, imidacloprid, from aqueous solution using a batch adsorption method. These synthesized nanoparticles were characterized with the help of several analytical and spectroscopic techniques. To acquire the maximum conceivable adsorption, effects of different influencing parameters like pH of the solution, time of contact, concentration of pesticide solution, amount of adsorbent and temperature were also examined. Moreover, the kinetic studies were found to be in good agreement with a pseudo-second-order kinetic model supporting the occurrence of chemisorption phenomenon. Additionally, isotherm modeling proved that the adsorption process was in accordance with the Langmuir model of isotherm. Thermodynamic parameters depicted the endothermic and spontaneous behavior of the adsorption process. Desorption studies were also carried out to examine the reusability of these nano-adsorbents. These verdicts confirmed that the surface modified magnetite nanoparticles may be treated as proficient material for exclusion of imidacloprid from the aqueous solution.

Microwave-assisted preparation of polysubstituted imidazoles using Zingiber extract synthesized green Cr2O3 nanoparticles

Cr₂O₃ nanoparticles were prepared using Zingiber officinal extract which were used as an efficient and reusable catalyst in the practical synthesis of polysubstituted imidazoles by means of a convenient reaction of aromatic aldehydes with ammonium acetate and benzil under microwave irradiation and H₂O as solvent. The structure of the compounds was studied by IR and ¹H-NMR spectrum. The most important benefits of this process are operational simplicity, reasonable reaction times, and excellent yield of products. The results show that the optimal conditions for the formation of imidazole derivatives are as follow: power of 400 W, reaction time of 4-9 min, H₂O as a solvent, and 15 mmol of catalyst amount.

Wound Healing Potential of an Oleoresin Essential Oil Chemotype from Canarium schweinfurthii Engl

This study was conducted to investigate the chemical composition of essential oil (EO) extracted from an oleoresin of Canarium schweinfurthii widespread in the Gabonese tropical forest. A great variability in the chemical composition of EO was observed, among which a chemical profile rich in terpinolene and α-phellandrene (31.2 and 21.8%, respectively), was found and tested as a natural active ingredient for topical applications. After the evaluation of eye and skin irritancy and sensitization potentials of EO on in vitro and in chemico models, the in vitro modulating potential on a model of wound re-epithelialization was assessed. The terpinolene and α-phellandrene-rich chemotype have been proven to accelerate wound healing in a dose-dependent manner (concentration range from 1.8 to 9.0 μg/mL). In addition, the ability of this EO to modulate the pro-inflammatory response in human keratinocytes stimulated by UVB was observed in vitro by the reduction in levels of interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), suggesting a possible implication during the inflammation phase of wound healing. Despite the high variability in EO composition, a method of solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of the oleoresin headspace is proposed for the in situ identification of the terpinolene and α-phellandrene-rich chemotype instead of conducting hydrodistillation. These results offer interesting perspectives for the development of innovative natural ingredients for the topical route, ingredients obtained in an eco-responsible and non-destructive way.

Chemical constituents from Ficus sur Forssk (Moraceae)

Phytochemical investigation of the aerial roots of Ficus sur, a Cameroonian medicinal plant, resulted in a previously undescribed cerebroside, suroside (1), in addition to its aglycon congener suramide (2). Moreover, six known natural products including alpinumisoflavone (3), wighteone metabolite (4), oleanolic acid (5), β-sitosterol (6), β-sitosterol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (7), and epi-ѱ-taraxastanolone (8) were identified. The structures of the previously undescribed compounds were determined by analysis of 1D and 2D-NMR (One and two dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance), mass spectrometry, chemical conversion, and by comparison of these data with those from the literature. Wighteone metabolite (4) exhibited a weak cytotoxic activity against the human HepG2 hepatocellular carcinoma cells with an IC50 value of 51.9 µM.

ZnO Nanoparticle-Assisted Synthesis of Thiazolo[3,2-α]Pyrimidine Analogs: Antibacterial and Antioxidant Activity, In Silico Molecular Docking, and ADMET Prediction Study

In the present study, a new series of nine Thiazolo[3,2-α] pyrimidine analogs were synthesized in good to excellent yields (87.9–96.9%) and improved reaction time using a ZnO nanoparticle-assisted protocol. All the synthesized compounds were characterized using a combination of physicochemical parameters, UV-visible, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR spectroscopic methods. Among the synthesized compounds, the in vitro antibacterial activity displayed by compound 16 was higher (14.67 ± 0.58 mm at 500 μg/mL) against P. aeruginosa compared to amoxicillin (12.33 ± 0.58 mm at 500 μg/mL), whereas compounds 14 and 18 showed comparable activity (12.00 ± 0.00 mm and 12.33 ± 0.58 mm at 500 μg/mL and 250 μg/mL, respectively) against the same strain. The activities displayed by compounds 14, 16, 18, and 20 were comparable (12.33 ± 1.15 mm, 12.65 ± 0.58 mm, 12.33 ± 0.58 mm, and 12.00 ± 1.00 mm, respectively, at 500 μg/mL) to amoxicillin (13.33 ± 1.15 mm at the same concentration) against E. coli. Compound 19 showed good activity (12.00 ± 1.72 mm at 500 μg/mL) against S. aureus compared to amoxicillin (16.33 ± 0.58 mm at the same concentration). Compound 19 displayed the highest percent inhibition of DPPH with an IC50 value of 9.48 g/mL using the DPPH free radical scavenging assay compared to ascorbic acid (3.21 g/mL) and promising inhibition of peroxide formation (76.28 ± 0.12%), demonstrating its potential in preventing the formation of lipid peroxides. Thus, according to our findings, both the biological activities and in silico computational results revealed that compounds 14, 16, and 18 are good antibacterial agents against P. aeruginosa and E. coli, whereas compound 19 was found to be a promising antibacterial agent against S. aureus and an antioxidant agent. The present study revealed that the synthesized compounds appear to be lead compounds for rational drug design.

Thermodynamic Study of Leaching Conditions of Galena with Citrate Ions and Hydrogen Peroxide as Oxidizing Agent

Galena is the most important mineral for lead production, as it is the main source of lead in the world. Currently, the concentrates of this mineral are mainly treated using pyrometallurgical methods, creating several environmental problems, such as the generation of toxic and greenhouse gases. In addition, these processes involve high energy consumption, which limits their applicability. Hydrometallurgical routes are proposed as alternative processes for obtaining some metals such as silver, copper, gold, etc. The drawback of these processes is that the minerals tend to be passive in aqueous media. To mitigate this issue, researchers have used extreme conditions of pressure and temperature (6 atm. and 155 °C) or the use of very corrosive conditions. In this sense, the use of complexing agents that dissolve the metals of interest has been proposed. Citrate ion is one of the most promising complexing agents for galena leaching, obtaining high percentages of dissolution in relatively short times. Unfortunately, there has not been enough investigation about the concentration optimization of the complexing in the pH range from 5 to 9. In this sense, thermodynamic diagrams, such as the Pourbaix diagrams, are very useful for this purpose. Therefore, in this work, the effects of pH and temperature on the leaching of galena in citrate ion solutions are studied thermodynamically and experimentally. The experimental work was carried out with pure galena samples with a particle size of +149 - 74 µm (-100 + 200 mesh). The results show that higher recoveries were obtained working at a pH of 8 and at temperatures of 30 and 40 °C. The thermodynamic and experimental data demonstrated that the existence of an optimal concentration of citrate ion, due the extraction of lead from galena, has a greater reaction rate at a relatively low initial concentration of 0.3 M. This is due the formation of the complex lead citrate 1 (Pb(cit)-).

Enhanced Natural Dyeing and Antibacterial Properties of Cotton by Physical and Chemical Pretreatments

In this study, pomegranate peel extract was used to dye cotton fabrics. Generally, natural dyes have low affinity for cellulosic fibers and therefore need treatment for attachment. Air atmospheric plasma was applied to lower the concentrations of mordants needed and enhance dyeability. The outcomes showed that the residual concentrations of metallic ions decreased when applying the plasma treatment. ATR-FTIR and SEM analysis were performed to evaluate the effect of plasma modification on the surface chemistry and topography of the cellulosic fibers. The traces of metals released from finished fabric were quantified using ICP OES spectrometry. Color fastnesses (wash, rubbing and light) were evaluated to assess the mordanting step effect and the durability of the color. All tested fastnesses were good to very good. The concentrations of metal ions in finished fabrics were 32.4 for Fe, 0.28 for Al, 0.29 for Cr and 1.21 for Cu. Plasma treatment can be considered an efficient strategy to reduce the concentration of toxic metallic mordants.
