Metal organic framework-801 based magnetic solid-phase extraction and its application in analysis of preterm labor treatment drugs

A novel magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) method based on metal organic framework-801 (MOF-801) modified magnetic nanoparticles (noted as PEI-MNPs@MOF-801) was successfully prepared for the extraction of preterm labor treatment drugs (including indometacin, acemetacin and sulindac) from human plasma sample. MOF-801, a new kind of porous coordination polymer composed of Zr⁴⁺ and fumaric acid, was modified on the surface of synthesized polyethyleneimine magnetic nanoparticles (PEI-MNPs) through amidation reaction. The obtained PEI-MNPs@MOF-801 was characterized with Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. A MSPE-HPLC-UV method was developed by coupling PEI-MNPs@MOF-801 with HPLC system. Several parameters that affect the extraction efficiency including acetonitrile content, NaCl content, extraction time and sample volume were investigated. Under optimum conditions, the proposed MSPE-HPLC-UV method showed high extraction efficiency (enrichment factors between 96-118), good linearity with R ≥ 0.9987, excellent reproducibility (RSD ≤ 4.30 %) and low limits of detection in the range of 0.03-0.05 ng/mL. This method was also successfully applied to the extraction of indometacin, acemetacin and sulindac in human plasma samples and good recoveries were obtained.

Covalent Organic Frameworks: Synthesis, Properties and Applications-An Overview

Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) are an exciting new class of microporous polymers with unprecedented properties in organic material chemistry. They are generally built from rigid, geometrically defined organic building blocks resulting in robust, covalently bonded crystalline networks that extend in two or three dimensions. By strategically combining monomers with specific structures and properties, synthesized COF materials can be fine-tuned and controlled at the atomic level, with unparalleled precision on intrapore chemical environment; moreover, the unusually high pore accessibility allows for easy post-synthetic pore wall modification after the COF is synthesized. Overall, COFs combine high, permanent porosity and surface area with high thermal and chemical stability, crystallinity and customizability, making them ideal candidates for a myriad of promising new solutions in a vast number of scientific fields, with widely varying applications such as gas adsorption and storage, pollutant removal, degradation and separation, advanced filtration, heterogeneous catalysis, chemical sensing, biomedical applications, energy storage and production and a vast array of optoelectronic solutions. This review attempts to give a brief insight on COF history, the overall strategies and techniques for rational COF synthesis and post-synthetic functionalization, as well as a glance at the exponentially growing field of COF research, summarizing their main properties and introducing the numerous technological and industrial state of the art applications, with noteworthy examples found in the literature.

Hydrophilic carboxyl supported immobilization of UiO-66 for novel bar sorptive extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in food samples

Herein, the preparation of UiO-66 on frosted glass rod (FGR) was proposed through the coordination interaction of Zr-OH groups and carboxyl sites on FGR. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) of intra-batch and inter-batch were below 8.0% (n = 7). UiO-66-modified FGR (UiO-66@FGR) was applied to the extraction and monitoring of five non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) by coupling to novel bar sorptive extraction (BSE) with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UPLC). Sample volume, stirring rate, extraction time, sample pH value, desorption solvent, and desorption time were investigated. NSAIDs (ketoprofen, flurbiprofen, ibuprofen, naproxen, and diclofenac sodium) were determined at a low limit of detection (0.92 ng/mL) over a wide linear range (10-1500 ng/mL). The developed method was used to analyze NSAIDs in sheep muscle, chicken wing, and milk with recoveries of 80.8%-117.2%, RSDs < 6.5%. Fabricated UiO-66@FGR exhibited excellent reproducibility, stability, and good adsorption property towards NSAIDs in food samples.

Reversible Diels-Alder and Michael Addition Reactions Enable the Facile Postsynthetic Modification of Metal-Organic Frameworks

Functionalization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is critical in exploring their structural and chemical diversity for numerous potential applications. Herein, we report multiple approaches for the tandem postsynthetic modification (PSM) of various MOFs derived from Zr(IV), Al(III), and Zn(II). Our current work is based on our efforts to develop a wide range of MOF platforms with a dynamic functional nature that can be chemically switched via thermally triggered reversible Diels-Alder (DA) and hetero-Diels-Alder (HDA) ligations. Furan-tagged MOFs (furan-UiO-66-Zr) were conjugated with maleimide groups bearing dienophiles to prepare MOFs with a chemically switchable nature. As HDA pairs, phosphoryl dithioester-based moieties and cyclopentadiene (Cp)-grafted MOF (Cp-MIL-53-Al) were utilized to demonstrate the cleavage and rebonding of the linkages as a function of temperature. In addition to these strategies, the Michael addition reaction was also applied for the tandem PSM of IRMOF-3-Zn. Maleimide groups were postsynthetically introduced in the MOF lattice, which were further ligated with cysteine-based biomolecules via the thiol-maleimide Michael addition reaction. On the basis of the versatility of the herein presented chemistry, we expect that these approaches will help in designing a variety of sophisticated functional MOF materials addressing diverse applications.

Aptamer-functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for biosensing

As a class of crystalline porous materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted increasing attention. Due to the nanoscale framework structure, adjustable pore size, large specific surface area, and good chemical stability, MOFs have been applied widely in many fields such as biosensors, biomedicine, electrocatalysis, energy storage and conversions. Especially when they are combined with aptamer functionalization, MOFs can be utilized to construct high-performance biosensors for numerous applications ranging from medical diagnostics and food safety inspection, to environmental surveillance. Herein, this article reviews recent innovations of aptamer-functionalized MOFs-based biosensors and their bio-applications. We first briefly introduce different functionalization methods of MOFs with aptamers, which provide a foundation for the construction of MOFs-based aptasensors. Then, we comprehensively summarize different types of MOFs-based aptasensors and their applications, in which MOFs serve as either signal probes or signal probe carriers for optical, electrochemical, and photoelectrochemical detection, with an emphasis on the former. Given recent substantial research interests in stimuli-responsive materials and the microfluidic lab-on-a-chip technology, we also present the stimuli-responsive aptamer-functionalized MOFs for sensing, followed by a brief overview on the integration of MOFs on microfluidic devices. Current limitations and prospective trends of MOFs-based biosensors are discussed at the end.

Magnetic cobalt oxide nanosheets: green synthesis and in vitro cytotoxicity

Cobalt oxide nanoparticles were prepared via green chemistry route and fully characterized by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses; the CoO and Co₃O₄ nanoparticles, in sheet-shaped cobalt oxide form, ensued simultaneously in one step. The varying concentrations of NPs were analyzed via 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) test on the cancer cell line (U87) which revealed that with increasing concentration of cobalt oxide nanoparticles, the survival rate of U87 tumor cells decreases; IC₅₀ of nanoparticles being ~ 55 µg/ml^-1.

An insight into the bioelectrochemical photoreduction of CO2 to value-added chemicals

Goal of sustainable carbon neutral economy can be achieved by designing an efficient CO₂ reduction system to generate biofuels, in particular, by mimicking the mechanism of natural photosynthesis using semiconducting nanomaterials interfaced with electroactive bacteria (EAB) in a photosynthetic microbial electrosynthesis (PMES) system. This review paper presents an overview of the recent advancements in the biohybrid photoanode and photocathode materials. We discuss the reaction mechanism observed at photoanode and photocathode to enhance our understanding on the solar driven MES. We extend the discussion by showcasing the potential activity of EABs toward high selectivity and production rates for desirable products by manipulating their genomic sequence. Additionally, the critical challenges associated in scaling up the PMES system including the strategies for diminution of reactive oxygen species, low solubility of CO₂ in the typical electrolytes, low selectivity of product species are presented along with the suggestions of alternative strategies to achieve economically viable generation of (bio)commodities.

A novel fluorescent strategy based on double modifications of metal organic framework material CAU-10-NH2 for low background and high sensitivity determination of H2S

Hydrogen sulfide is typical metabolic marker and environmental pollutant which is worthwhile to determine. Herein, a low background and high sensitivity fluorescent strategy based on double modifications of metal organic framework material CAU-10-NH₂ is proposed for the determination of hydrogen sulfide. Firstly, a functional monomer 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid is employed to modify on the CAU-10-NH₂, the product CAU-10-NH-dAba has strong fluorescent performance at 412 nm under an excitation wavelength of 320 nm. Subsequently, it is further modified by the azide group to form CAU-10-NH-dAba-N₃. This azidation inhibits the fluorescent signal. However, in the presence of hydrogen sulfide, the azide group is specifically reduced to amidogen, and results in the recovery of the fluorescence. The CAU-10-NH-DABA-N₃ was characterized by solid state NMR, XPS, fluorescence, IR, XRD, SEM and specific surface area. After the optimization of pH value, temperature and interaction time, the detection results of hydrogen sulfide demonstrate the linear range of this strategy is from 20 to 140 nM with a detection limit of 1.51 nM, which is significantly better than that of the CAU-10-NH₂ merely modified by 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid. Meanwhile, the satisfactory assay results of hydrogen sulfide in serum sample and Pearl river water suggest a potential application prospect of this strategy in clinical diagnosis and environment monitoring.

Collective structural properties of embedded molecular motors in functionalized metal-organic frameworks

Photo-responsive molecular motors incorporated in soft porous materials enable the amplification of the motion of individual motor units by employing their collective and cooperative behavior. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide in this regard, due to their structural diversity and modular assembly, a unique matrix to construct well-defined and systematically tunable molecular environments for the embedding of molecular motors. However, despite advances in the development of such photo-responsive functional materials, a thorough understanding of the governing interactions at the atomic scale has been missing so far, limiting the possibility of predicting and fully exploring the potential of these assembled machineries. Here, we present a conformational study to unravel the collective structural behavior and elucidate the impact of motor-motor interactions on the local and global properties of the scaffold. In particular, our work highlights the impact of full conversion of the embedded molecular motors on the overall network topology of the MotorMOF and thus acts as a benchmark for future studies to further explore the correlation of responsive building units with the resulting functionality of these hierarchical systems.

Vitamin E succinate with multiple functions: A versatile agent in nanomedicine-based cancer therapy and its delivery strategies

Vitamin E succinate (VES), a succinic acid ester of vitamin E, is one of the most effective anticancer compounds of the vitamin E family. VES can inhibit tumor growth by multiple pathways mainly involve tumor proliferation inhibition, apoptosis induction, and metastasis prevention. More importantly, the mitochondrial targeting and damaging property of VES endows it with great potential in exhibiting synergetic effect with conventional chemotherapeutic drugs and overcoming multidrug resistance (MDR). Given the lipophilicity of VES that hinders its bioavailability and therapeutic activity, nanotechnology with multiple advantages has been widely explored to deliver VES and opened up new avenues for its in vivo application. This review aims to introduce the anticancer mechanisms of VES and summarize its delivery strategies using nano-drug delivery systems. Specifically, VES-based combination therapy for synergetic anticancer effect, MDR-reversal, and oral chemotherapy improvement are highlighted. Finally, the challenges and perspectives are discussed.

Hybrid Nanosystems for Biomedical Applications

Inorganic/organic hybrid nanosystems have been increasingly developed for their versatility and efficacy at overcoming obstacles not readily surmounted by nonhybridized counterparts. Currently, hybrid nanosystems are implemented for gene therapy, drug delivery, and phototherapy in addition to tissue regeneration, vaccines, antibacterials, biomolecule detection, imaging probes, and theranostics. Though diverse, these nanosystems can be classified according to foundational inorganic/organic components, accessory moieties, and architecture of hybridization. Within this Review, we begin by providing a historical context for the development of biomedical hybrid nanosystems before describing the properties, synthesis, and characterization of their component building blocks. Afterward, we introduce the architectures of hybridization and highlight recent biomedical nanosystem developments by area of application, emphasizing hybrids of distinctive utility and innovation. Finally, we draw attention to ongoing clinical trials before recapping our discussion of hybrid nanosystems and providing a perspective on the future of the field.

High-Z Metal-Organic Frameworks for X-ray Radiation-Based Cancer Theranostics

X-ray radiation is commonly employed in clinical practice for diagnostic and therapeutic applications. Over the past decade, developments in nanotechnology have led to the use of high-Z elements as the basis for innovative new treatment platforms that enhance the clinical efficacy of X-ray radiation. Nanoscale metal-frameworks (nMOFs) are coordination networks containing organic ligands that have attracted attention as therapeutic platforms in oncology and other areas of medicine. In cancer therapy, X-ray activated, high-Z nMOFs have demonstrated potential as radiosensitizers that increase local radiation dose deposition and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This minireview summarizes current research on high-Z nMOFs in cancer theranostics and discusses factors that may influence future clinical application.

Simplification of gold nanoparticle synthesis with low cytotoxicity using a greener approach: opening up new possibilities

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have diverse applications in the diagnosis and treatment of ailments. This study describes an extremely simplified synthesis of AuNPs using antioxidant-rich pollen extract as a local natural source. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize the synthesized AuNPs; strong UV-vis absorption at 534 nm confirmed their formation, the XRD pattern showed the presence of a crystalline structure, and TEM images showed them to be spherical nanoparticles with an average size of 9.3 ± 2.9 nm. As synthesized AuNPs remained stable for up to two months under laboratory conditions without any sedimentation or change in the absorption value, presumably due to the protection afforded by the capping agents from pollen. AuNPs revealed low toxicity effects on MCF-7 and HUVECs cell lines (with an IC50 value of ∼400 μg mL-1 for both the cell lines). The proposed method did not use any hazardous materials or high-energy consuming devices; thus this efficient protocol may be adapted for large-scale production using local resources.

Applications of porous frameworks in solid-phase microextraction

Porous frameworks are a term of attracting solid materials assembled by interconnection of molecules and ions. These trendy materials due to high chemical and thermal stability, well-defined pore size and structure, and high effective surface area gained attention to employ as extraction phase in sample pretreatment methods before analytical analysis. Solid-phase microextraction is an important subclass of sample preparation technique that up to now different configurations of this method have been introduced to get adaptable with different environments and analytical instruments. In this review, theoretical aspect and different modes of solid-phase microextraction method are investigated. Different classes of porous frameworks and their applications as extraction phase in the proposed microextraction method are evaluated. Types and features of supporting substrates and coating procedures of porous frameworks on them are reviewed. At the end, the prospective and the challenges ahead in this field are discussed.

A Review on Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Porous Carbon-Based Novel Microwave Absorption Materials

The development of microwave absorption materials (MAMs) is a considerable important topic because our living space is crowed with electromagnetic wave which threatens human's health. And MAMs are also used in radar stealth for protecting the weapons from being detected. Many nanomaterials were studied as MAMs, but not all of them have the satisfactory performance. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted tremendous attention owing to their tunable chemical structures, diverse properties, large specific surface area and uniform pore distribution. MOF can transform to porous carbon (PC) which is decorated with metal species at appropriate pyrolysis temperature. However, the loss mechanism of pure MOF-derived PC is often relatively simple. In order to further improve the MA performance, the MOFs coupled with other loss materials are a widely studied method. In this review, we summarize the theories of MA, the progress of different MOF-derived PC‑based MAMs, tunable chemical structures incorporated with dielectric loss or magnetic loss materials. The different MA performance and mechanisms are discussed in detail. Finally, the shortcomings, challenges and perspectives of MOF-derived PC‑based MAMs are also presented. We hope this review could provide a new insight to design and fabricate MOF-derived PC-based MAMs with better fundamental understanding and practical application.

Metal-Organic Frameworks: Synthetic Methods and Potential Applications

Metal-organic frameworks represent a porous class of materials that are build up from metal ions or oligonuclear metallic complexes and organic ligands. They can be considered as sub-class of coordination polymers and can be extended into one-dimension, two-dimensions, and three-dimensions. Depending on the size of the pores, MOFs are divided into nanoporous, mesoporous, and macroporous items. The latter two are usually amorphous. MOFs display high porosity, a large specific surface area, and high thermal stability due to the presence of coordination bonds. The pores can incorporate neutral molecules, such as solvent molecules, anions, and cations, depending on the overall charge of the MOF, gas molecules, and biomolecules. The structural diversity of the framework and the multifunctionality of the pores render this class of materials as candidates for a plethora of environmental and biomedical applications and also as catalysts, sensors, piezo/ferroelectric, thermoelectric, and magnetic materials. In the present review, the synthetic methods reported in the literature for preparing MOFs and their derived materials, and their potential applications in environment, energy, and biomedicine are discussed.

A nickel ion-incorporating zinc-mesoporous metal organic framework thin film nanocomposite modified glassy carbon electrode for electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol in alkaline media

In this work, we have successfully synthesized a nickel ion-incorporating zinc-mesoporous metal–organic framework thin films (Zn-mMOFTFs) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE), Ni/Zn-mMOFTFs/GCE, for electrooxidation of methanol in alkaline solution.

Recent progress of MOF-derived porous carbon materials for microwave absorption

Microwave absorbing materials (MAM) have attracted considerable attention over the years in stealth and information technologies. Metal–organic framework (MOF) with a unique microstructure and electronic state has become an attractive focus as self-sacrificing precursors of microwave absorbers. The MOF-derived porous carbon (PC) materials exhibit a high absorbing performance due to the stable three-dimensional structure and homogeneous distribution of metal particles. MOF-derived PC materials are promising for ideal MAM via tuning of the structure and composition, resulting in appropriate impedance matching and the synergistic effect between magnetic and dielectric loss. In this review, the MOF-derived PC materials and their basic absorption mechanisms (dielectric loss, magnetic loss and impedance matching) are introduced, as well as the characters of various MOF-derived PC materials. In addition, this review provides a comprehensive introduction and tabulates the recent progress based on the classification of the MOF-derived metallic state, such as pure PC (without reduced metals), mono-metal/PC, multi-metal/PC, metal oxides/PC and other derived PC composites. Finally, the challenges faced by MOF-derived PC materials are overviewed, and their further development is mentioned.

In vitro human skin decontamination efficacy of MOF-808 in decontamination lotion following exposure to the nerve agent VX

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown promising properties for removal of chemical warfare agents, in particular for material decontamination and functionalized fabrics. The MOF-properties could also be beneficial for skin decontamination, especially when exposed to highly toxic and low volatile nerve agents. In such exposures, efficient decontamination is crucial for adequate medical management. In the present study, seven zirconium-based MOFs were evaluated for their ability to degrade VX and subsequently tested in vitro for decontamination of VX on human dermatomed skin. Of the MOFs evaluated, MOF-808 showed the greatest ability to degrade VX in an alkaline buffer with complete degradation of VX within 5 min. PCN-777, Zr-NDC and NU-1000 displayed degradation half-lives of approximately 10 min. When including MOF-808 in a skin friendly carrier with slightly acidic pH, a decreased agent degradation rate was observed, requiring over 24 h to reach complete degradation. In skin decontamination experiments, MOF-808 enhanced the efficacy compared to the carrier alone, essentially by improved agent absorption. Adding MOF-808 to Reactive Skin Decontamination Lotion (RSDL) did not improve the high effectiveness of RSDL alone. The present study showed that including MOF in skin decontamination lotions could be beneficial. Further studies should include optimizing the particulates and formulations.

Stir bar sorptive extraction and its application

Recent progress of stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) in the past six years is reviewed. The preparation methods including electrodeposition, self-assembly, solvent exchange, physical magnetic adsorption and electrostatic spinning, for the coated stir bar are summarized and compared, specifically for a specific material for coatings fabrication, e.g., carbon-based materials and metal organic frameworks. The emerging materials (e.g., graphene, graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, monolith, metal-organic frameworks and porous organic polymers) applied for coated stir bar fabrication are one of the focus of this review, along with their respective advantages in extraction process and application in trace analysis. The development and application of extraction apparatus of SBSE are also involved. Based on these information, the development status and prospects of SBSE as an efficient sample pretreatment technique in real sample analysis are discussed.

Promising Catalytic Systems for CO2 Hydrogenation into CH4: A Review of Recent Studies

The increasing utilization of renewable sources for electricity production turns CO2 methanation into a key process in the future energy context, as this reaction allows storing the temporary renewable electricity surplus in the natural gas network (Power-to-Gas). This kind of chemical reaction requires the use of a catalyst and thus it has gained the attention of many researchers thriving to achieve active, selective and stable materials in a remarkable number of studies. The existing papers published in literature in the past few years about CO2 methanation tackled the catalysts composition and their related performances and mechanisms, which served as a basis for researchers to further extend their in-depth investigations in the reported systems. In summary, the focus was mainly in the enhancement of the synthesized materials that involved the active metal phase (i.e., boosting its dispersion), the different types of solid supports, and the frequent addition of a second metal oxide (usually behaving as a promoter). The current manuscript aims in recapping a huge number of trials and is divided based on the support nature: SiO2, Al2O3, CeO2, ZrO2, MgO, hydrotalcites, carbons and zeolites, and proposes the main properties to be kept for obtaining highly efficient carbon dioxide methanation catalysts.

Multifunctional metal-organic frameworks in oil spills and associated organic pollutant remediation

The release of toxic organic compounds into the environment in an event of oil spillage is a global menace due to the potential impacts on the ecosystem. Several approaches have been employed for oil spills clean-up, with adsorption technique proven to be more promising for the total reclamation of a polluted site. Of the several adsorbents so far reported, adsorbent-based porous materials have gained attention for the reduction/total removal of different compounds in environmental remediation applications. The superior potential of mesoporous materials based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) against conventional adsorbents is due to their intriguing and enhanced properties. Therefore, this review presents recent development in MOF composites; methods of preparation; and their practical applications towards remediating oil spill, organic pollutants, and toxic gases in different environmental media, as well as potential materials in the possible deployment in reclaiming the polluted Niger Delta due to unabated oil spillage and gas flaring.

Metal Organic Framework steered electrosynthesis of anisotropic gold nanorods for specific sensing of organophosphate pesticides in vegetables collected from the field

The uncontrolled use of organophosphate (OP) group of pesticides has led to their accumulation in food and vegetables, causing major health issues. Hence, the development of a reliable sensor is imperative for the detection of neurotoxic organophosphates (OP). In the present study, we have intertwined the interfaces of a Metal Organic Framework (MOF), MOF-directed rapid electrochemically grown gold nanorods (aAuNR), cysteamine (Cys) functionalization, and the neurotransmitter acetylcholinesterase (AChE) to fabricate a novel electrochemical bioprobe AChE/Cys/aAuNR/MOF/ITO for sensing OP pesticides with an ultra-low detection limit of 3 ng L-1 over a linear range of 30 to 600 ng L-1. Prior to sensing, in silico docking studies were employed for tracking the structural aspects of the molecular recognition of specific OP as potential inhibitors. The sensor can quantify residues of sprayed OP (chlorpyrifos, malathion, parathion, methyl parathion, ethion) in field vegetables (Abelmoschus esculentus, Solanum melongena, Capsicum annuum, Momordica charantia Linn) using a single calibration curve designed using chlorpyrifos, and the results were validated via gas chromatography-electron capture detector (GC-ECD) measurements. The inhibition rate kinetics of structurally different OP (chlorpyrifos, malathion, methyl parathion) were studied via the bioprobe and further validated using the standard Ellman method, confirming the practical applicability of the sensor for the detection of a specific group of OP. The bioprobe AChE/Cys/aAuNR/MOF/ITO offers good stability, specificity, and anti-interference properties for the detection of OP in real samples.

CeO2 foam-like nanostructure: biosynthesis and their efficient removal of hazardous dye

In this study, CeO₂ (cerium oxide) nanoparticles were synthesized using Pinus halepensis pollen and were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that the ensuing CeO₂ nanostructures, ranging in size from 5 to 25 nm, had high porosity. Synthesized CeO₂ showed the effective catalytic activity towards the photocatalytic removal of dyes. In this work, the photocatalytic activity to removal dye (methyl violet 2B), in the absence of UV radiation, using cerium dioxide nanoparticles (CeO₂-NP) was determined. In this research, four main factors such as effect on color, concentration and pH were examined and maximum %R was obtained about was 97% in 75 min in presence of 50 mg of hydrogen peroxide.

Review: Efficiently performing periodic elements with modern adsorption technologies for arsenic removal

Arsenic (As) toxicity is a global phenomenon, and it is continuously threatening human life. Arsenic remains in the Earth's crust in the forms of rocks and minerals, which can be released into water. In addition, anthropogenic activity also contributes to increase of As concentration in water. Arsenic-contaminated water is used as a raw water for drinking water treatment plants in many parts of the world especially Bangladesh and India. Based on extensive literature study, adsorption is the superior method of arsenic removal from water and Fe is the most researched periodic element in different adsorbent. Oxides and hydroxides of Fe-based adsorbents have been reported to have excellent adsorptive capacity to reduce As concentration to below recommended level. In addition, Fe-based adsorbents were found less expensive and not to have any toxicity after treatment. Most of the available commercial adsorbents were also found to be Fe based. Nanoparticles of Fe-, Ti-, Cu-, and Zr-based adsorbents have been found superior As removal capacity. Mixed element-based adsorbents (Fe-Mn, Fe-Ti, Fe-Cu, Fe-Zr, Fe-Cu-Y, Fe-Mg, etc.) removed As efficiently from water. Oxidation of AsO₃^3- to AsO₄^3-and adsorption of oxidized As on the mixed element-based adsorbent occurred by different adsorbents. Metal organic frameworks have also been confirmed as good performance adsorbents for As but had a limited application due to nano-crystallinity. However, using porous materials having extended surface area as carrier for nano-sized adsorbents could alleviate the separation problem of the used adsorbent after treatment and displayed outstanding removal performances.

Carbon Nanomaterials From Metal-Organic Frameworks: A New Material Horizon for CO2 Reduction

The rise of CO2 in the atmosphere, which results in severe climate change and temperature increase, is known as the major reason for the greenhouse effect. Reducing CO2 to value-added products is an attractive solution to this severe problem, along with addressing the energy crisis, to which the catalysts being employed are of vital importance. Due to their high porosity and tunable compositions, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) show great potential in energy conversion systems. By thermal or chemical treatment methods, the MOFs are easily turned into MOF-derived carbon nanomaterials. The much higher level of conductivity enables MOF-derived carbon nanomaterials to be employed in CO2 conversion processes. The present review, discusses the state of the art of MOF-derived carbon nanomaterials in CO2 electrochemical, photocatalytic, and thermal reduction applications. The corresponding reaction mechanisms and influence of various factors on catalyst performance are elaborated. Finally, the deficiencies and recommendations are provided for future progress.

Dopamine Sensing Based on Ultrathin Fluorescent Metal-Organic Nanosheets

The importance of dopamine (DA) detection as a biomarker for several diseases, especially Parkinson''s disease, has persuaded scientists to develop new nanomaterials for efficient sensing of DA in clinical samples. Ultrathin metal-organic nanosheets due to their exceptional thickness, large surface area, and flexibility are endowed with many accessible active sites and optimal surface interaction with the target analyte molecules. In this regard, a novel layered fluorescent metal-organic nanomaterial with a honeycomb topology based on europium, [Eu(pzdc)(Hpzdc)(H₂O)]_n (ECP) (H₂pzdc = 2,3-pyrazine dicarboxylic acid), was synthesized. X-ray crystallography revealed that the 3D supramolecular architecture of ECP is constructed from noncovalent interactions of coordinated water molecules between the 2D layers along the b axis. These layers that are only ∼4 nm thick were conveniently separated through ultrasound-induced liquid phase exfoliation. Optical studies show that the reduction of ECP thickness enhances the fluorescence intensity and serves as an efficient optical marker for DA detection. ECP nanoflakes exhibited fast response and high selectivity for DA detection in clinical samples. Good linearity for DA detection in the range of 0.1-10 μM with a detection limit of 21 nM proves the potential of ECP nanoflakes in DA sensing applications.

Determination of bisphenol A: Old problem, recent creative solutions based on novel materials

Bisphenol A is a synthetic compound widely used in industry, in the production of polycarbonate, epoxy resins, and thermal paper, among others. Its annual production is estimated at millions of tons per year, demonstrating its importance. Despite its wide application in various everyday products, once in the environment (due to its disposal or leaching), it has high toxicity to humans and animal life, and this problem has been well known for years. Given this problem, many researchers seek alternatives for its monitoring in matrices such as natural water, waste, food, and biological matrices. For this, new advanced materials have been developed, characterized, and applied in creative ways for the preparation of samples for the determination of bisphenol A. This article aims to present some of these important and recent applications, describing the use of molecularly imprinted polymers, metal and covalent organic frameworks, ionic liquids and magnetic ionic liquids, and deep eutectic solvents as creative solutions in sample preparation for the long-standing problem of bisphenol A determination.

Flexible supercapacitor electrodes using metal-organic frameworks

Advancements in the field of flexible and wearable devices require flexible energy storage devices to cater their power demands. Metal-ion batteries (such as lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries, etc.) and electrochemical capacitors (also called supercapacitors or ultracapacitors) have achieved great interest in the recent past due to their superior energy storage characteristics like high power density and long cycle life. A major bottleneck of using metal-ion batteries in wearable devices is their lack of flexibility. Low power density, toxicity and flammability due to organic electrolytes inhibit them from safe on-body device applications. On the other hand, supercapacitors can be made with aqueous electrolytes, making them a safer alternative for wearable applications. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are novel candidates as electrode materials due to their salient features such as large surface area, three-dimensional porous architecture, permeability to foreign entities, structural tailorability, etc. Though pristine MOFs suffer from poor intrinsic conductivity, this can be rectified by preparing composites with other electronically conducting materials. MOF-based electrodes are highly promising for flexible and wearable supercapacitors since they exhibit good energy and power densities. This review focuses on the new developments in the field of MOF-based composite electrodes for developing flexible supercapacitors.

In-situ fabrication of zeolite imidazole framework@hydroxyapatite composite for dispersive solid-phase extraction of benzodiazepines and their determination with high-performance liquid chromatography-VWD detection

A novel zeolite imidazole framework@hydroxyapatite composite (ZIF-8@HAP) was constructed via in-situ growth and developed for efficient dispersive solid-phase extraction (DSPE) of three benzodiazepines from urine samples. The prepared composite was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectrometer, Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry, X-ray diffractometry, zeta potential analyzer, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption experiment. Characterization results showed typical dodecahedron ZIF-8 crystals that were uniformly located on the surface of rod-like HAP. The combination of ZIF-8 and HAP made the surface area significantly enhanced from 4.68 to 205.44 m² g^-1. Compared with a commercial C₁₈ adsorbent, ZIF-8@HAP exhibited superior removal performance for interfering components from urine and offered better extraction properties for the analytes. The prepared ZIF-8@HAP was applied as an adsorbent in DSPE, and the main experimental parameters, including pH and ionic strength of solution, adsorbent amount, adsorption time, elution solvent, and volume, were investigated. Under optimal conditions, the adsorption for 250 ng mL^-1 of each analyte in 4 mL of urine was accomplished within 2 min using 60 mg of adsorbent. The method of ZIF-8@HAP-based DSPE followed by high-performance liquid chromatography gave enhancement factors of 13.3-15.3, linear ranges of 2.5-500 ng mL^-1, and limits of detection (S/N = 3) of 0.7-1.4 ng mL^-1. The relative recoveries at three spiked levels ranged from 88.7 - 102% with intra-day and inter-day precisions from 3.0 - 10.3% and 2.3 - 12.3%, respectively. Efficient One-Step Immobilization of CaLB Lipase over MOF Support NH2-MIL-53(Al)

Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials possess the widest versatility in structure, composition, and synthesis procedures amongst the known families of materials. On the other hand, the extraordinary affinity between MOFs and enzymes has led to widely investigating these materials as platforms to support these catalytic proteins in recent years. In this work, the MOF material NH2-MIL-53(Al) has been tested as a support to immobilize by one-step methodology (in situ) the enzyme lipase CaLB from Candida antarctica by employing conditions that are compatible with its enzymatic activity (room temperature, aqueous solution, and moderate pH values). Once the nature of the linker deprotonating agent or the synthesis time were optimized, the MOF material resulted in quite efficient entrapping of the lipase CaLB through this in situ approach (>85% of the present enzyme in the synthesis media) while the supported enzyme retained acceptable activity (29% compared to the free enzyme) and had scarce enzyme leaching. The equivalent post-synthetic method led to biocatalysts with lower enzyme loading values. These results make clear that the formation of MOF support in the presence of the enzyme to be immobilized substantially improves the efficiency of the biocatalysts support for retaining the enzyme and limits their leaching.

Structural analysis of and selective CO2 adsorption in mixed-ligand hydroxamate-based metal-organic frameworks

Two mixed-ligand metal-organic frameworks, [Zn₂(BDHA)_0.5(INA)₃] (MOF-1: H₂BDHA = benzene-1,4-dihydroxamic acid; HINA = isonicotinic acid) and [Co₂(BDHA)_0.5(INA)₃(DMF)] (MOF-2), were solvothermally synthesized and fully characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography as well as N₂, H₂, and CO₂ gas-sorption measurements. The results constitute the first detailed analysis of the bonding environment around the hydroxamates in such MOFs, which are simultaneously decorated with Lewis-basic sites from the hydroxamate moieties and metal sites predisposed for coordinative unsaturation. MOF-2 shows a desirably selective adsorption of CO₂ relative to N₂.

Degradation-by-design: how chemical functionalization enhances the biodegradability and safety of 2D materials

A large number of graphene and other 2D materials are currently used for the development of new technologies, increasingly entering different industrial sectors. Interrogating the impact of such 2D materials on health and environment is crucial for both modulating their potential toxicity in living organisms and eliminating them from the environment. In this context, understanding if 2D materials are bio-persistent is mandatory. In this review we describe the importance of biodegradability and decomposition of 2D materials. We initially cover the biodegradation of graphene family materials, followed by other emerging classes of 2D materials including transition metal dichalcogenides and oxides, Xenes, Mxenes and other non-metallic 2D materials. We explain the role of defects and functional groups, introduced onto the surface of the materials during their preparation, and the consequences of chemical functionalization on biodegradability. In strong relation to the chemistry on 2D materials, we describe the concept of "degradation-by-design" that we contributed to develop, and which concerns the covalent modification with appropriate molecules to enhance the biodegradability of 2D materials. Finally, we cover the importance of designing new biodegradable 2D conjugates and devices for biomedical applications as drug delivery carriers, in bioelectronics, and tissue engineering. We would like to highlight that the biodegradation of 2D materials mainly depends on the type of material, the chemical functionalization, the aqueous dispersibility and the redox potentials of the different oxidative environments. Biodegradation is one of the necessary conditions for the safe application of 2D materials. Therefore, we hope that this review will help to better understand their biodegradation processes, and will stimulate the chemists to explore new chemical strategies to design safer products, composites and devices containing 2D materials.
