Diurnal trends in coarse particulate matter composition in the Los Angeles Basin

To investigate the diurnal profile of the concentration and composition of ambient coarse particles, three sampling sites were set up in the Los Angeles Basin to collect coarse particulate matter (CPM) in four different time periods of the day (morning, midday, afternoon and overnight) in summer and winter. The samples were analyzed for total and water-soluble elements, inorganic ions and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC). In summer, highest concentrations of CPM gravimetric mass, mineral and road dust, and WSOC were observed in midday and afternoon, when the prevailing onshore wind was stronger. In general, atmospheric dilution was lower in winter, contributing to the accumulation of air pollutants during stagnation conditions. Turbulences induced by traffic become a significant particle re-suspension mechanism, particularly during winter night time, when mixing height was lowest. This is evident by the high levels of CPM mass, mineral and road dust in winter overnight at the near-freeway sites located in urban Los Angeles, and to a lesser extent in Riverside. WSOC levels were higher in summer, with a similar diurnal profile with mineral and road dust, indicating that they either share common sources, or that WSOC may be adsorbed or absorbed onto the surfaces of these dust particles. In general, the contribution of inorganic ions to CPM mass was greater in the overnight sampling period at all sampling sites, suggesting that the prevailing meteorological conditions (lower temperature and higher relative humidity) favor the formation of these ions in the coarse mode. Nitrate, the most abundant CPM-bound inorganic species in this basin, is found to be predominantly formed by reactions with sea salt particles in summer. When the sea salt concentrations were low, the reaction with mineral dust particles and the condensation of ammonium nitrate on CPM surfaces also contributes to the formation of nitrate in the coarse mode.

Why Do Sulfuric Acid Coatings Influence the Ice Nucleation Properties of Mineral Dust Particles in the Atmosphere?

Laboratory studies with supermicrometer particles have shown that mineral particles coated with sulfuric acid are relatively poor ice nuclei. We investigated this phenomenon, which is of atmospheric relevance, by probing the structure of water at the mineral-aqueous acid interface as a function of the sulfuric acid concentration using sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy. We found that ordered water structures at water/mica interfaces drastically diminished at molarities of sulfuric acid equal to 0.5 M and totally disappeared when the molarities reached 5 M. The decrease in ordered water structures at the interface was caused by a combined effect of the decreased mica surface potential at low pH, the adsorption of sulfates on mica, and the lack of free water molecules in high concentrations of acidic solution. The good ice nucleation ability above liquid water saturation is correlated with the presence of structured water, suggesting that structured water at the interface may be needed for efficient heterogeneous ice nucleation.

Kinetics and mechanisms of heterogeneous reaction of gaseous hydrogen peroxide on mineral oxide particles

Recent studies have shown that heterogeneous reactions of hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) on aerosol surfaces may play an important role in tropospheric chemistry. The data concerning the kinetics and mechanisms of these reactions, however, are quite scarce so far. Here, we investigated, for the first time, the heterogeneous reactions of gaseous H(2)O(2) on SiO(2) and α-Al(2)O(3) particles, two major components of mineral dust aerosol, using transmission-Fourier Transform Infrared (T-FTIR) spectroscopy, and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). It is found that H(2)O(2) molecularly adsorbs on SiO(2), and a small amount of molecularly adsorbed H(2)O(2) decomposes due to its thermal instability. For α-Al(2)O(3), catalytic decomposition of H(2)O(2) evidently occurs, but there is also a small amount of H(2)O(2) molecularly adsorbed on the particle surface. The BET uptake coefficients of H(2)O(2) on both particles appear to be independent of gaseous H(2)O(2) concentration (1.27-13.8 ppmv) and particle sample mass (2.8-6.5 mg for SiO(2) and 8.6-18.9 mg for α-Al(2)O(3)), but are strongly dependent on relative humidity with the values ranging from (1.55 ± 0.14) × 10(-8) and (1.21 ± 0.04) × 10(-7) at 2% RH to (0.61 ± 0.06) × 10(-8) and (0.76 ± 0.09) × 10(-7) at 76% RH for SiO(2) and α-Al(2)O(3), respectively. On the basis of the experimental results and literature data, the potential mechanisms for heterogeneous decomposition of H(2)O(2) were proposed, and the atmospheric implications of these reactions were discussed. It is found that heterogeneous reaction of H(2)O(2) on both mineral oxides plays a significant role in processing mineral aerosols, although its role as a sink for ambient H(2)O(2) is probably limited.

Importance of secondary sources in the atmospheric budgets of formic and acetic acids

We present a detailed budget of formic and acetic acids, two of the most abundant trace gases in the atmosphere. Our bottom-up estimate of the global source of formic and acetic acids are ∼1200 and ∼1400Gmolyr^-1, dominated by photochemical oxidation of biogenic volatile organic compounds, in particular isoprene. Their sinks are dominated by wet and dry deposition. We use the GEOS-Chem chemical transport model to evaluate this budget against an extensive suite of measurements from ground, ship and satellite-based Fourier transform spectrometers, as well as from several aircraft campaigns over North America. The model captures the seasonality of formic and acetic acids well but generally underestimates their concentration, particularly in the Northern midlatitudes. We infer that the source of both carboxylic acids may be up to 50% greater than our estimate and report evidence for a long-lived missing secondary source of carboxylic acids that may be associated with the aging of organic aerosols. Vertical profiles of formic acid in the upper troposphere support a negative temperature dependence of the reaction between formic acid and the hydroxyl radical as suggested by several theoretical studies.

Asian dust particles converted into aqueous droplets under remote marine atmospheric conditions

The chemical history of dust particles in the atmosphere is crucial for assessing their impact on both the Earth's climate and ecosystem. So far, a number of studies have shown that, in the vicinity of strong anthropogenic emission sources, Ca-rich dust particles can be converted into aqueous droplets mainly by the reaction with gaseous HNO(3) to form Ca(NO(3))(2). Here we show that other similar processes have the potential to be activated under typical remote marine atmospheric conditions. Based on field measurements at several sites in East Asia and thermodynamic predictions, we examined the possibility for the formation of two highly soluble calcium salts, Ca(NO(3))(2) and CaCl(2), which can deliquesce at low relative humidity. According to the results, the conversion of insoluble CaCO(3) to Ca(NO(3))(2) tends to be dominated over urban and industrialized areas of the Asian continent, where the concentrations of HNO(3) exceed those of HCl ([HNO(3)/HCl] >  ∼ 1). In this regime, CaCl(2) is hardly detected from dust particles. However, the generation of CaCl(2) becomes detectable around the Japan Islands, where the concentrations of HCl are much higher than those of HNO(3) ([HNO(3)/HCl] <  ∼ 0.3). We suggest that elevated concentrations of HCl in the remote marine boundary layer are sufficient to modify Ca-rich particles in dust storms and can play a more important role in forming a deliquescent layer on the particle surfaces as they are transported toward remote ocean regions.

Atmospheric Heterogeneous Reactions of Benzo(a)pyrene

This experimental study deals with heterogeneous reactions of benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) with ozone, nitrogen dioxide and hydroxyl radicals. BaP was adsorbed on silica particles chosen here as a model of mineral atmospheric particles. Compound extractions were assisted by focused microwave and analyses were performed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectroscopy in single ion monitoring mode. Pseudo-first order rate constants were obtained from the fit of experimental decays of particulate-BaP concentration versus reaction time. Second order rate constants were determined considering the different oxidant gaseous concentrations except for the case of hydroxyl radicals where only a pseudo-first order rate constant was proposed. Values obtained at room temperature are (2.1±0.5)×10−15 cm3 molecule−1 s−1 for (BaP + ozone), (5.8±1.4)×10−16 cm3 molecule−1 s−1 for (BaP + nitrogen dioxide) and (3.4±0.8)×10−2 s−1 for (BaP + OH) reactions. Products have only been investigated for the NO2 and the OH (in the presence of NOx) reactions. 1-, 3- and 6-nitrobenzo(a)pyrenes were detected as degradation products and quantified. Reaction rate constants for product formation are (3.7±0.9)×10−16 cm3 molecule−1 s−1 for 6-NBaP, (2.2±0.6)×10−17 cm3 molecule−1 s−1 for 1-NBaP and (5.3±1.3)×10−17 cm3 molecule−1 s−1 for 3-NBaP. 1-, 3- and 6-nitroBaP account respectively for approximately 5%, 12% and 83% of total nitrated species. If in the presence of only nitrogen dioxide, BaP was totally degraded within few minutes, only 20 to 25 % of the initial BaP led to nitrated compounds when reacting with OH (in the presence of NOx).

Kinetics of porphyrin adsorption and DNA-assisted desorption at the silica-water interface

Evanescent wave cavity ring-down spectroscopy (EW-CRDS) has been used to study in situ the kinetics of the adsorption of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-N-methylpyridiniumyl)porphyrin (TMPyP) from pH 7.4 phosphate buffer solution (PBS) to the silica-water interface and the interaction of calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) with the resulting TMPyP-functionalized surface. TMPyP was delivered to the silica surface using an impinging jet technique to allow relatively fast surface kinetics to be accessed. Adsorption was first-order in TMPyP, and the initial adsorption rate constant at the bare surface was found to be k = (4.1 +/- 0.6) x 10(-2) cm s(-1). A deceleration in the adsorption kinetics was observed at longer times that could be described semiquantitatively using an Elovich-type kinetic expression. The limiting value of the absorbance corresponded approximately to monolayer coverage (6.2 x 10(13) molecules cm(-2)). Exposure of the TMPyP-modified silica surface to CT-DNA, achieved by flowing CT-DNA solution over the functionalized surface, resulted in efficient desorption of the TMPyP. The desorption process was driven by the interaction of TMPyP with CT-DNA, which UV-vis spectroscopy indicated involved intercalative binding. The desorption kinetics were also simulated using complementary finite element modeling of convection-diffusion coupled to a surface process.

Heterogeneous reactions of methacrolein and methyl vinyl ketone on α-Al2O3 particles

The heterogeneous reactions of methacrolein (MAC) and methyl vinyl ketone (MVK) on α-Al(2)O(3) surfaces have been studied in a flow reactor using transmission-Fourier Transform Infrared (T-FTIR) spectroscopy to monitor the reaction progress. Unlike SiO(2) particles where MAC and MVK are weakly physisorbed, the results in this work demonstrate that on c-AlO3 particles MAC and MVK are irreversibly adsorbed and can rapidly react on the surface to form various products such as aldehydes, organic acids, hydrogen peroxide, and even higher molecular weight compounds. The initial uptake rates and initial uptake coefficients for MAC and MVK on α-Al(2)O(3) under dry conditions were determined to explore the reactivity of the particles. Furthermore, the effect of water vapor on the heterogeneous reactions was also investigated as a function of relative humidity. Both the heterogeneous uptake and transformation of MAC and MVK on α-Al(2)O(3) were largely suppressed under humid conditions due to the depletion of surface active sites by water molecules. On the basis of experimental results, atmospheric implications of heterogeneous reactions of MAC and MVK were discussed. Our work suggests that heterogeneous reactions on α-Al(2)O(3) can be important sinks for MAC and MVK as well as possible contributors to atmospheric organic aerosol.

Uptake of gaseous hydrogen peroxide by submicrometer titanium dioxide aerosol as a function of relative humidity

Hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) is an important atmospheric oxidant that can serve as a sensitive indicator for HO(x) (OH + HO(2)) chemistry. We report the first direct experimental determination of the uptake coefficient for the heterogeneous reaction of gas-phase hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) with titanium dioxide (TiO(2)), an important component of atmospheric mineral dust aerosol particles. The kinetics of H(2)O(2) uptake on TiO(2) surfaces were investigated using an entrained aerosol flow tube (AFT) coupled with a chemical ionization mass spectrometer (CIMS). Uptake coefficients (gamma(H(2)O(2))) were measured as a function of relative humidity (RH) and ranged from 1.53 x 10(-3) at 15% RH to 5.04 x 10(-4) at 70% RH. The observed negative correlation of RH with gamma(H(2)O(2)) suggests that gaseous water competes with gaseous H(2)O(2) for adsorption sites on the TiO(2) surface. These results imply that water vapor plays a major role in the heterogeneous loss of H(2)O(2) to submicrometer TiO(2) aerosol. The results are compared with related experimental observations and assessed in terms of their potential impact on atmospheric modeling studies of mineral dust and its effect on the heterogeneous chemistry in the atmosphere.

In situ DRIFTS study of hygroscopic behavior of mineral aerosol

In situ diffusion reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy was used to study the water adsorption on mineral oxides (SiO2, alpha-Al2O3, MgO, Fe2O3, TiO2). The results showed that all the water adsorption isotherms were well fitted with the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET)-III type equation, with the calculated monolayers occurring at 24%-30% relative humidity. It showed that about 1-5 layers of water adsorbed on oxides surfaces in ambient relative humidity (20%-90%). The measured deliquescence relative humidity of NaCl was (74 +/- 1)%, which demonstrated that DRIFTS is a useful method for the study the hygroscopic behavior of mineral dust. In addition, the limits of DRIFTS were also discussed.

Adsorption of dyes on Sahara desert sand

Sahara desert sand (SaDeS) was employed as a mineral sorbent for retaining organic dyes from aqueous solutions. Natural sand has demonstrated a strong affinity for organic dyes but significantly lost its adsorption capacity when it was washed with water. Therefore, characterization of both natural and water washed sand was performed by XRD, BET, SEM and FTIR techniques. It was found that water-soluble kyanite, which is detected in natural sand, is the dominant factor affecting adsorbance of cationic dyes. The sand adsorbs over 75% of cationic dyes but less than 21% for anionic ones. Among the dyes studied, Methylene Blue (MB) demonstrated the strongest affinity for Sahara desert sand (Q(e)=11.98 mg/g, for initial dye solution concentration 3.5 x 10(-5)mol/L). The effects of initial dye concentration, the amount of the adsorbent, the temperature and the pH of the solution on adsorption capacity were tested by using Methylene Blue as model dye. Pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion models were applied. It was concluded that adsorption of Methylene Blue on Sahara desert sand followed pseudo-second order kinetics. Gibbs free energy, enthalpy change and entropy change were calculated and found -6411 J/mol, -30360 J/mol and -76.58 J/mol K, respectively. These values indicate that the adsorption is an exothermic process and has a spontaneous nature at low temperatures.

Simulation of water adsorption on kaolinite under atmospheric conditions

Grand canonical Monte Carlo calculations are employed to investigate water adsorption on kaolinite at 298 and 235 K. Both basal planes (the Al and Si surfaces) as well as two edge-like surfaces are considered. The general force field CLAYFF is used together with the SPC/E and TIP5P-E models for water. Problems that occur in single slab simulations due to arbitrary truncation of the point charge lattice are identified, and a working remedy is discussed. The edges and the Al surface adsorb water at subsaturation in the atmospherically relevant pressure range. The Si surface remains dry up to saturation. Both edges have a very strong affinity for water and adsorb continuously up to monolayer coverage. The Al surface has a weaker affinity for water but forms a subsaturation monolayer. On the Al surface, the monolayer is formed in an essentially sharp transition, and strong hysteresis is observed upon desorption. This indicates collective behavior among the water molecules which is not present for the edges. Binding energies of singly adsorbed water molecules at 10 K were determined to understand the differences in water uptake by the four kaolinite surfaces. Binding energies (SPC/E) of -21.6, -46.4, -73.5, and -94.1 kJ/mol, were determined for the Si surface, Al surface, unprotonated edge, and protonated edge, respectively. The water monolayer on the Al surface, particularly at 235 K, exhibits hexagonal patterns. However, the associated lattice parameters are not compatible with ice Ih. Water density and hydrogen bonding in the monolayers at both 298 and 235 K were also determined to better understand the structure of the adsorbed water.

Photochemistry of atmospheric dust: ozone decomposition on illuminated titanium dioxide

The ozone decomposition onto mineral surfaces prepared with traces of solid TiO2 in a matrix of SiO2 in order to mimic mineral dust particles has been investigated using a coated-wall flow-tube system at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The ozone uptake coefficients were measured both under dark conditions and irradiation using near UV-light. While uptake in the dark was negligible, a large photoenhanced ozone uptake was observed. For TiO2/SiO2 mixtures under irradiation, the uptake coefficients increased with increasing TiO2 mass fraction (from 1 to 3 wt %), and the corresponding uptake coefficient based on the geometric surfaces ranged from 3 x 10(-6) to 3 x 10(-5). The uptake kinetics was also observed to increase with decreasing ozone concentration between 290 and 50 ppbv. Relative humidity influenced the ozone uptake on the film, and a reduced ozone loss was observed for relative humidity above 30%. The experimental results suggest that under atmospherically relevant conditions the photochemistry of dust can represent an important sink of ozone inside the dust plume.

Viability and potential for immigration of airborne bacteria from Africa that reach high mountain lakes in Europe

We have analysed the diversity of the bacteria, which grow after addition of concentrated airborne particles and desert dust in different microcosms combinations with water samples from oligotrophic alpine lakes. We used, on the one hand, airborne bacteria transported by an African dust plume and collected in a high mountain area in the central Pyrenees (Spain). On the other hand, we collected desert dust in Mauritania (c. 3000 km distance, and a few days estimated airborne journey), a known source region for dust storms in West Africa, which originates many of the dust plumes landing on Europe. In all the dust-amended treatments we consistently observed bacterial growth of common phyla usually found in freshwater ecosystems, i.e. Alpha-, Beta- and Gammaproteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and a few Bacteroidetes, but with different composition based on lake water pretreatment and dust type. Overall, we tentatively split the bacterial community in (i) typical freshwater non-airborne bacteria, (ii) cosmopolitan long-distance airborne bacteria, (iii) non-freshwater low-distance airborne bacteria, (iv) non-freshwater long-distance airborne soil bacteria and (v) freshwater non-soil airborne bacteria. We identified viable long-distance airborne bacteria as immigrants in alpine lakes (e.g. Sphingomonas-like) but also viable putative airborne pathogens with the potential to grow in remote alpine areas (Acinetobacter-like and Arthrobacter-like). Generation of atmospheric aerosols and remote dust deposition is a global process, largely enhanced by perturbations linked to the global change, and high mountain lakes are very convenient worldwide model systems for monitoring global-scale bacterial dispersion and pathogens entries in remote pristine environments.

Laboratory simulation of SO2 heterogeneous reactions on hematite surface under different SO2 concentrations

The variations of sulfate formation and optical coefficients during SO2 heterogeneous reactions on hematite surface under different SO2 concentrations were examined using in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and ion chromatograph (IC). Laboratory experiments revealed that within ambient SO2 of 0.51-18.6 ppmv, sulfate product, producing velocity, absorption and backward scattering coefficients showed an increasing trend with SO2 concentration. Under given SO2 concentration, the velocity of sulfate producing performed an evolution of initial increasing, midterm decreasing and final stabilizing. The reactive uptake and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) uptake coefficients of heterogeneous reactions rose with SO2 and exhibited high reactivities. Considering global warming, this result is important for the knowledge of heterogeneous reactions of SO2 on mineral particle surface in the atmosphere and the assessment of their impacts on radiative forcing.

Perchlorate production by ozone oxidation of chloride in aqueous and dry systems

Overwhelming evidence now exists that perchlorate is produced through natural processes and can be ubiquitously found at environmentally relevant concentrations in arid and semi-arid locations. A number of potential production mechanisms have been hypothesized and ClO(4)(-) production by ozone oxidation of surface bound Cl(-) was demonstrated. However, no information concerning the impact of concentration, final reaction products distribution, impact of reaction phase, or oxidation of important oxychlorine intermediates has been reported. Using IC-MS-MS analysis and replicate oxidation experiments, we show that exposing aqueous solutions or Cl(-) coated sand or glass surfaces to O(3) (0.96%) generated ClO(4)(-) with molar yields of 0.007 and 0.01% for aqueous Cl(-) solutions and 0.025 and 0.42% for Cl(-) coated sand and glass, respectively. Aqueous solutions of Cl(-) produced less ClO(4)(-) than Cl(-) coated sand or glass as well as a higher ratio of ClO(3)(-) to ClO(4)(-). Reduction of the initial Cl(-) mass resulted in substantially higher molar yields of ClO(4)(-) and ClO(3)(-). In addition, alkaline absorbers that captured gaseous products contained substantial quantities of Cl(-), ClO(3)(-), and ClO(4)(-). Solutions of possible oxychlorine intermediates (OCl(-) and ClO(3)(-)) exposed to O(3) produced only scant amounts of ClO(4)(-) while a ClO(2)(-) solution exposed to O(3) produced substantial molar yields of ClO(4)(-) (4% molar yield). Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy energy-dispersive X-ray analysis demonstrated a significant loss of Cl(-) and an increase in oxygen on the Cl(-) coated silica sand exposed to O(3). While the experimental conditions are not reflective of natural conditions this work clearly demonstrates the relative potential of Cl(-) precursors in perchlorate production and the likely importance of dry aerosol oxidation over solution phase reactions. It also suggests that ClO(2)(-) may be a key intermediate while ClO(3)(-) and OCl(-) are unlikely to play a significant role.
