Enhancing the Efficiency and Stability of Perovskite Solar Cells through Defect Passivation and Controlled Crystal Growth Using Allantoin

In this study, we present a robust approach that concurrently manages crystal growth and defect passivation within the perovskite layer through the introduction of a small molecule additive─allantoin. The precise regulation of crystal growth in the presence of allantoin yields perovskite films characterized by enhanced morphology, larger grain size, and improved grain orientation. Notably, the carbonyl and amino groups present in allantoin passivate under-coordinated Pb2+ and I- defects, respectively, through molecular interactions. Trap density in the perovskite layer is measured, and it is 0.39 × 1016 cm-3 for the allantoin-incorporated device and 0.83 × 1016 cm-3 for the pristine device. This reduction in defects leads to reduced trap-assisted nonradiative recombination, as confirmed by the photoluminescence, transient photo voltage, and impedance measurements. As a result, when these allantoin-incorporated perovskite films are implemented as the active layer in solar cells, a noteworthy efficiency enhancement to 20.63% is attained, surpassing the 18.04% of their pristine counterparts. Furthermore, devices with allantoin exhibit remarkable operational stability, maintaining 80% of their efficiency even after 500 h of continuous illumination, whereas the pristine device degraded to 65% of its initial efficiency in 400 h. Also, allantoin-incorporated devices exhibited exceptional stability against high humidity and elevated temperatures.

Absolute Sustainability Assessment of Flue Gas Valorization to Ammonia and Synthetic Natural Gas

Carbon capture and utilization has gained attention to potentially curb CO2 emissions while generating valuable chemicals. These technologies will coexist with fossil analogs, creating synergies to leverage circular economy principles. In this context, flue gas valorization from power plants can assist in the transition. Here, we assessed the absolute sustainability of a simulated integrated facility producing ammonia and synthetic natural gas from flue gas from a combined-cycle natural gas power plant based in Germany, using hydrogen from three water electrolysis technologies (proton exchange membrane, alkaline, and solid oxide cells), nitrogen, and CO2. For the first time, we applied the planetary boundaries (PBs) framework to a circular integrated system, evaluating its performance relative to the safe operating space. The PB-LCA assessment showed that the alternative technologies could significantly reduce, among others, the impact on climate change and biosphere integrity when compared to their fossil counterparts, which could be deemed unsustainable in climate change. Nevertheless, these alternative technologies could also lead to burden shifting and are not yet economically viable. Overall, the investigated process could smoothen the transition toward low-carbon technologies, but its potential collateral damages should be carefully considered. Furthermore, the application of the PBs provides an appealing framework to quantify the absolute sustainability level of integrated circular systems.

Interphase Regulation by Multifunctional Additive Empowering High Energy Lithium-Ion Batteries with Enhanced Cycle Life and Thermal Safety

High energy density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) adopting high-nickel layered oxide cathodes and silicon-based composite anodes always suffer from unsatisfied cycle life and poor safety performance, especially at elevated temperatures. Electrode /electrolyte interphase regulation by functional additives is one of the most economic and efficacious strategies to overcome this shortcoming. Herein, cyano-groups (-CN) are introduced into lithium fluorinated phosphate to synthesize a novel multifunctional additive of lithium tetrafluoro (1,2-dihydroxyethane-1,1,2,2-tetracarbonitrile) phosphate (LiTFTCP), which endows high nickel LiNi0.8 Co0.1 Mn0.1 O2 /SiOx -graphite composite full cell with an ultrahigh cycle life and superior safety characteristics, by adding only 0.5 wt % LiTFTCP into a LiPF6 -carbonate baseline electrolyte. It is revealed that LiTFTCP additive effectively suppresses the HF generation and facilitates the formation of a robust and heat-resistant cyano-enriched CEI layer as well as a stable LiF-enriched SEI layer. The favorable SEI/CEI layers greatly lessen the electrode degradation, electrolyte consumption, thermal-induced gassing and total heat-releasing. This work illuminates the importance of additive molecular engineering and interphase regulation in simultaneously promoting the cycling and thermal safety of LIBs with high-nickel NCMxyz cathode and silicon-based composite anode.

Unraveling the Role of Perovskite in Buried Interface Passivation

Interfaces in perovskite solar cells play a crucial role in their overall performance, and therefore, detailed fundamental studies are needed for a better understanding. In the case of the classical n-i-p architecture, TiO2 is one of the most used electron-selective layers and can induce chemical reactions that influence the performance of the overall device stack. The interfacial properties at the TiO2/perovskite interface are often neglected, owing to the difficulty in accessing this interface. Here, we use X-rays of variable energies to study the interface of (compact and mesoporous) TiO2/perovskite in such a n-i-p architecture. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy methods show that the defect states present in the TiO2 layer are passivated by a chemical interaction of the perovskite precursor solution during the formation of the perovskite layer and form an organic layer at the interface. Such passivation of intrinsic defects in TiO2 removes charge recombination centers and shifts the bands upward. Therefore, interface defect passivation by oxidation of Ti3+ states, the organic cation layer, and an upward band bending at the TiO2/perovskite interface explain the origin of an improved electron extraction and hole-blocking nature of TiO2 in the n-i-p perovskite solar cells.

Clustering Six Electrons within "Dawson-Like" Polyoxometalate: An Open Route toward Its Post-functionalization

Super-reduction of polyoxometalates (POMs) in solution is of fundamental interest for designing innovative energy storage systems. In this article, we show that the "Dawson-like" POM can undergo a disproportionation process during its massive electron uptake, leading to species containing three metal-metal bonds as evidenced by X-ray diffraction, multi-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1 H and 183 W NMR), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), UV/Vis, and voltammetry techniques. This result indicates that electron storing within metal-metal bonds is not a unique property of Keggin-type POM as postulated since the 70s. Besides, we demonstrate that the presence of an electron-rich triad in the "Dawson-like" POM allows its post-functionalization with additional tungstate ions, generating a chiral molecule that is also the largest WIV -containing POMs known to date.

Ground-State Orbital Analysis Predicts S1 Charge Transfer in Donor-Acceptor Materials

Donor-acceptor (D-A) materials can exhibit a wide range of unique photophysical properties with applications in next-generation optoelectronics. Electronic structure calculations of D-A dimers are often employed to predict the properties of D-A materials. One of the most important D-A dimer quantities is the degree of charge transfer (DCT) in the S1 state, which correlates with properties such as fluorescence lifetimes and intersystem crossing rates in D-A materials. While predictive metrics of the S1 DCT generally require an excited-state quantum chemistry calculation, presented here is a novel metric that predicts S1 DCT solely with ground-state orbital analysis. This metric quantifies the similarity of the orbitals between a dimer complex and its monomer components. A linear relationship is found between this similarity metric and the S1 DCT, calculated using a data set of 31 D-A dimers. Best practices for integrating this novel orbital structure-function relationship into high-throughput screening methods are discussed.

Influence of an Organic Salt-Based Stabilizing Additive on Charge Carrier Dynamics in Triple Cation Perovskite Solar Cells

Besides further improvement in the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells (PSC), their long-term stability must also be ensured. Additives such as organic cations with halide counter anions are considered promising candidates to address this challenge, conferring both higher performance and increased stability to perovskite-based devices. Here, a stabilizing additive (N,N-dimethylmethyleneiminium chloride, [Dmmim]Cl) is identified, and its effect on charge carrier mobility and lifetime under thermal stress in triple cation perovskite (Cs0.05 MA0.05 FA0.90 PbI3 ) thin films is investigated. To explore the fundamental mechanisms limiting charge carrier mobility, temperature-dependent microwave conductivity measurements are performed. Different mobility behaviors across two temperature regions are revealed, following the power law Tm , indicating two different dominant scattering mechanisms. The low-temperature region is assigned to charge carrier scattering with polar optical phonons, while a strong decrease in mobility at high temperatures is due to dynamic disorder. The results obtained rationalize the improved stability of the [Dmmim]Cl-doped films and devices compared to the undoped reference samples, by limiting temperature-activated mobile ions and retarding degradation of the perovskite film.

Highly Efficient Nitrogen-Fixing Microbial Hydrogel Device for Sustainable Solar Hydrogen Production

Conversion of sunlight and organic carbon substrates to sustainable energy sources through microbial metabolism has great potential for the renewable energy industry. Despite recent progress in microbial photosynthesis, the development of microbial platforms that warrant efficient and scalable fuel production remains in its infancy. Efficient transfer and retrieval of gaseous reactants and products to and from microbes are particular hurdles. Here, inspired by water lily leaves floating on water, a microbial device designed to operate at the air-water interface and facilitate concomitant supply of gaseous reactants, smooth capture of gaseous products, and efficient sunlight delivery is presented. The floatable device carrying Rhodopseudomonas parapalustris, of which nitrogen fixation activity is first determined through this study, exhibits a hydrogen production rate of 104 mmol h-1  m-2 , which is 53 times higher than that of a conventional device placed at a depth of 2 cm in the medium. Furthermore, a scaled-up device with an area of 144 cm2 generates hydrogen at a high rate of 1.52 L h-1  m-2 . Efficient nitrogen fixation and hydrogen generation, low fabrication cost, and mechanical durability corroborate the potential of the floatable microbial device toward practical and sustainable solar energy conversion.

Improving curcumin bactericidal potential against multi-drug resistant bacteria via its loading in polydopamine coated zinc-based metal-organic frameworks

Multi-drug resistant (MDR) bactearial strains have posed serious health issues, thus leading to a significant increase in mortality, morbidity, and the expensive treatment of infections. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), comprising metal ions and a variety of organic ligands, have been employed as an effective drug deliveryy vehicle due to their low toxicity, biodegradability, higher structural integrity and diverse surface functionalities. Polydopamine (PDA) is a versatile biocompatible polymer with several interesting properties, including the ability to adhere to biological surfaces. As a result, modifying drug delivery vehicles with PDA has the potential to improve their antimicrobial properties. This work describes the preparation of PDA-coated Zn-MOFs for improving curcumin's antibacterial properties against S. aureus and E. coli. Powder X-ray diffraction (P-XRD), FT-IR, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and DLS were utilized to characterize PDA-coated Zn-MOFs. The curcumin loading and in vitro release of the prepared MOFs were also examined. Finally, the MOFs were tested for bactericidal ability against E. coli and S. aureus using an anti-bacterial assay and surface morphological analysis. Smaller size MOFs were capable of loading and releasing curcumin. The findings showed that as curcumin was encapsulated into PDA-coated MOFs, its bactericidal potential was significantly enhanced, and the findings were further supported by SEM which indicated the complete morphological distortion of the bacteria after treatment with PDA-Cur-Zn-MOFs. These studies clearly indicate that the PDA-Cur-Zn-MOFs developed in this study are extremely promising for long-term release of drugs to treat a wide range of microbial infections.

Overcoming the Electrode Challenges of High-Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are becoming a major part of a greener and more sustainable future. However, the costs of high-purity hydrogen and noble metal catalysts alongside the complexity of the PEMFC system severely hamper their commercialization. Operating PEMFCs at high temperatures (HT-PEMFCs, above 120 °C) brings several advantages, such as increased tolerance to contaminants, more affordable catalysts, and operations without liquid water, hence considerably simplifying the system. While recent progresses in proton exchange membranes for HT-PEMFCs have made this technology more viable, the HT-PEMFC viscous acid electrolyte lowers the active site utilization by unevenly diffusing into the catalyst layer while it acutely poisons the catalytic sites. In recent years, the synthesis of platinum group metal (PGM) and PGM-free catalysts with higher acid tolerance and phosphate-promoted oxygen reduction reaction, in conjunction with the design of catalyst layers with improved acid distribution and more triple-phase boundaries, has provided great opportunities for more efficient HT-PEMFCs. The progress in these two interconnected fields is reviewed here, with recommendations for the most promising routes worthy of further investigation. Using these approaches, the performance and durability of HT-PEMFCs will be significantly improved.

Importance of the Walden Inversion for the Activity Volcano Plot of Oxygen Evolution

Since the birth of the computational hydrogen electrode approach, it is considered that activity trends of electrocatalysts in a homologous series can be quantified by the construction of volcano plots. This method aims to steer materials discovery by the identification of catalysts with an improved reaction kinetics, though evaluated by means of thermodynamic descriptors. The conventional approach for the volcano plot of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) relies on the assumption of the mononuclear mechanism, comprising the * OH, * O, and * OOH intermediates. In the present manuscript, two new mechanistic pathways, comprising the idea of the Walden inversion in that bond-breaking and bond-making occurs simultaneously, are factored into a potential-dependent OER activity volcano plot. Surprisingly, it turns out that the Walden inversion plays an important role since the activity volcano is governed by mechanistic pathways comprising Walden steps rather than by the traditionally assumed reaction mechanisms under typical OER conditions.

Peptide-Based Optical/Electronic Materials: Assembly and Recent Applications in Biomedicine, Sensing, and Energy Storage

The unique optical and electronic properties of living systems are impressive. Peptide-based supramolecular self-assembly systems attempt to mimic these properties by preparation optical/electronic function materials with specific structure through simple building blocks, rational molecular design, and specific kinetic stimulation. From the perspective of building blocks and assembly strategies, the unique optical and electronic properties of peptide-based nanostructures, including peptides self-assembly and peptides regulate the assembly of external function subunits, are systematically reviewed. Additionally, their applications in biomedicine, sensing, and energy storage are also highlighted. This bioinspired peptide-based function material is one of the hot candidates for the new generation of green intellect materials, with many advantages such as biocompatibility, environmental friendliness, and adjustable morphology.

Enhancing scalability and economic viability of lignocellulose-derived biofuels production through integrated pretreatment and methanogenesis arrest

The pursuit of affordable biofuels necessitates continuous refinement of valorization strategies, focusing on cost-effective feedstocks, accessible bioprocessing, and high-quality products. High energy input required during various stages, including pretreatment, post-pretreatment, and methanogenesis arrest, impeded the economic lignocellulose-derived biofuels production from anaerobic digestion (AD). Addressing this challenge, an upstream process integrating synergistic alkali pretreatment and arrested AD was proposed. Results demonstrated that an optimum reactor pH 10 yielded a volatile fatty acids (VFA) titer of 3.6 gCOD/L, only 23% lower than using methanogenesis inhibitor. The study further explored the interplay between initial pH, cell viability/functionality, and VFA production by assessing cell viability and cell population demographics. This integrated approach demonstrated a VFA yield of 364 gVFA/kgTSsubstrate at a cost of just USD 0.2/kgVFA, encompassing post-pretreatment and methanogenesis arrest, which underscores the viability of combining pretreatment and methanogenesis arrest for cost effective and scalable biofuels production.

Inhibition of Ion Migration for Highly Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

In recent years, organic-inorganic halide perovskites are now emerging as the most attractive alternatives for next-generation photovoltaic devices, due to their excellent optoelectronic characteristics and low manufacturing cost. However, the resultant perovskite solar cells (PVSCs) are intrinsically unstable owing to ion migration, which severely impedes performance enhancement, even with device encapsulation. There is no doubt that the investigation of ion migration and the summarization of recent advances in inhibition strategies are necessary to develop "state-of-the-art" PVSCs with high intrinsic stability for accelerated commercialization. This review systematically elaborates on the generation and fundamental mechanisms of ion migration in PVSCs, the impact of ion migration on hysteresis, phase segregation, and operational stability, and the characterizations for ion migration in PVSCs. Then, many related works on the strategies for inhibiting ion migration toward highly efficient and stable PVSCs are summarized. Finally, the perspectives on the current obstacles and prospective strategies for inhibition of ion migration in PVSCs to boost operational stability and meet all of the requirements for commercialization success are summarized.

Highly Efficient and Stable Inverted Perovskite Solar Cell Using Pure δ-FAPbI3 Single Crystals

Pure δ-formamidinium lead triiodide (δ-FAPbI3 ) single crystal for highly efficient perovskite solar cell (PCS) with long-term stability is prepared by a new method consisting of liquid phase reaction of FAI and PbI2 in N,N-dimethyl formamide and antisolvent crystallization using acetonitrile. In this method, the incorporation of any impurity into the crystal is excluded by the molecular recognition of the crystal growth site. This pure crystal is used to fabricate α-FAPbI3 inverted PSCs which showed excellent power conversion efficiency (PCE) due to much-reduced trap-states. The champion device exhibited a high PCE of 23.48% under the 1-Sun condition. Surface-treated devices with 3-(aminomethyl)pyridine showed a significantly improved PCE of 25.07%. In addition, the unencapsulated device maintained 97.22% of its initial efficiency under continuous 1-Sun illumination for 1,000 h at 85 °C in an N2 atmosphere ensuring long-term thermal and photo stabilities of PSCs, whereas the control device kept only 89.93%.

Decoding the puzzle: recent breakthroughs in understanding degradation mechanisms of Li-ion batteries

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) remain at the forefront of energy research due to their capability to deliver high energy density. Understanding their degradation mechanism has been essential due to their rapid engagement in modern electric vehicles (EVs), where battery failure may incur huge losses to human life and property. The literature on this intimidating issue is rapidly growing and often very complex. This review strives to succinctly present current knowledge contributing to a more comprehensible understanding of the degradation mechanism. First, this review explains the fundamentals of LIBs and various degradation mechanisms. Then, the degradation mechanism of novel Li-rich cathodes, advanced characterization techniques for identifying it, and various theoretical models are presented and discussed. We emphasize that the degradation process is not only tied to the charge-discharge cycles; synthesis-induced stress also plays a vital role in catalyzing the degradation. Finally, we propose further studies on advanced battery materials that can potentially replace the layered cathodes.

Design of high polarization low switching barrier hybrid improper ferroelectric perovskite oxide superlattices

Hybrid improper ferroelectricity is a useful tool to design ABO3/A'BO3 polar superlattices from non polar building blocks. In this study, we have designed high polarization-low switching barrier hybrid improper ferroelectric superlattices with efficient polarization, and polarization-magnetization switching properties above room temperature, using density functional theory and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Superlattices with a chemical formula of (AAlO3)m/(A'AlO3)n, where m/n = 1/1, 1/3, 3/1, 1/5 and 5/1, A, A' = Lanthanide and Y cations are considered to outline the design principles behind polarization switching and (LaFeO3)3/(CeFeO3)1 is investigated for polarization-magnetization switching. We find that the unconventional switching paths via out-of-phase rotation QR- (a0a0c-) and tilt precession QTP always yield lower switching barrier compared to those via in-phase rotation QR+ (a0a0c+) and tilt QT (a-a-c0) of BO6 octahedra. Results from ab initio molecular dynamics simulations estimate the temperature at which the lowest energy barrier can be overcome. It is possible to tune the polarization switching barrier by tuning the tolerance factor, A,A' cation radius mismatch and super lattice periodicity. For switching via QR-, the switching barrier varies exponentially with rotation angle, indicating how high switching barrier is expected for systems, away from cubic symmetry. We provide a recipe to overcome such a bottleneck by tuning superlattice periodicity. Finally, we have proposed the multiferroic device application concept through a proposed polarization-temperature hysteresis loop and magnetization switching.

High Chaos Induced Multiple-Anion-Rich Solvation Structure Enabling Ultrahigh Voltage and Wide Temperature Lithium-Metal Batteries

The optimal electrolyte for ultrahigh energy density (>400 Wh/kg) lithium-metal batteries with a LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode is required to withstand high voltage (≥4.7 V) and be adaptable over a wide temperature range. However, the battery performance is degraded by aggressive electrode-electrolyte reactions at high temperature and high voltage, while excessive growth of lithium dendrites usually occurs due to poor kinetics at low temperature. Accordingly, the development of electrolytes has encountered challenges in that there is almost no electrolyte simultaneously meeting the above requirements. Herein, a high chaos electrolyte design strategy is proposed, which promotes the formation of weak solvation structures involving multiple anions. By tailoring a Li+-EMC-DMC-DFOB--PO2F2--PF6- multiple-anion-rich solvation sheath, a robust inorganic-rich interphase is obtained for the electrode-electrolyte interphase (EEI), which is resistant to the intense interfacial reactions at high voltage (4.7 V) and high temperature (45 °C). In addition, the Li+ solvation is weakened by the multiple-anion solvation structure, which is a benefit to Li+ desolventization at low temperature (-30 °C), greatly improving the charge transfer kinetics and inhibiting the lithium dendrite growth. This work provides an innovative strategy to manipulate the high chaos electrolyte to further optimize solvation chemistry for high voltage and wide temperature applications.

MOF-on-MOF-Derived Ultrafine Fe2P-Co2P Heterostructures for High-Efficiency and Durable Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzers

The alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE) is considered to be a promising approach for large-scale industrial hydrogen production. Nevertheless, it is severely hampered by the inability to operate tolerable HER catalysts consistently under low overpotentials at ampere-level current densities. Here, we develop a universal ligand-exchange (MOF-on-MOF) modulation strategy to synthesize ultrafine Fe2P and Co2P nanoparticles, which are well anchored on N and P dual-doped carbon porous nanosheets (Fe2P-Co2P/NPC). In addition, benefiting from the downshift of the d-band center and the interfacial Co-P-Fe bridging, the electron-rich P site is triggered, which induces the redistribution of electron density and the swapping of active centers, lowering the energy barrier of the HER. As a result, the Fe2P-Co2P/NPC catalyst only requires a low overpotential of 175 mV to achieve a current density of 1000 mA cm-2. The solar-driven water electrolysis system presents a record-setting and stable solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of 20.36%. Crucially, the catalyst could stably operate at 1000 mA cm-2 over 1000 h in a practical AEMWE at an estimated cost of US$0.79 per kilogram of H2, which achieves the target (US$2 per kg of H2) set by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

A wide array of lignin-related phenolics are oxidized by an evolved bacterial dye-decolourising peroxidase

Lignin is the second most abundant natural polymer next to cellulose and by far the largest renewable source of aromatic compounds on the planet. Dye-decolourising peroxidases (DyPs) are biocatalysts with immense potential in lignocellulose biorefineries to valorize emerging lignin building blocks for environmentally friendly chemicals and materials. This work investigates the catalytic potential of the engineered PpDyP variant 6E10 for the oxidation of 24 syringyl, guaiacyl and hydroxybenzene lignin-phenolic derivatives. Variant 6E10 exhibited up to 100-fold higher oxidation rates at pH 8 for all the tested phenolic substrates compared to the wild-type enzyme and other acidic DyPs described in the literature. The main products of reactions were dimeric isomers with molecular weights of (2 × MWsubstrate - 2 H). Their structure depends on the substitution pattern of the aromatic ring of substrates, i.e., of the coupling possibilities of the primarily formed radicals upon enzymatic oxidation. Among the dimers identified were syringaresinol, divanillin and diapocynin, important sources of structural scaffolds exploitable in medicinal chemistry, food additives and polymers.

Electrolyte-assisted low-voltage decomposition of Li2C2O4 for efficient cathode pre-lithiation in lithium-ion batteries

Lithium oxalate (Li2C2O4) is an attractive cathode pre-lithiation additive for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), but its application is hindered by its high decomposition potential (>4.7 V). Due to the liquid-solid synergistic effect of the NaNO2 additive and the LiNi0.83Co0.07Mn0.1O2 (NCM) cathode material, the decomposition efficiency of micro-Li2C2O4 reaches 100% at a low charge cutoff voltage of 4.3 V. Our work boosts the widespread practical application of Li2C2O4 by a simple and promising electrolyte-assisted cathode pre-lithiation strategy.

Electrochemical Activation of Atomic-Layer-Deposited Nickel Oxide for Water Oxidation

NiO-based electrocatalysts, known for their high activity, stability, and low cost in alkaline media, are recognized as promising candidates for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In parallel, atomic layer deposition (ALD) is actively researched for its ability to provide precise control over the synthesis of ultrathin electrocatalytic films, including film thickness, conformality, and chemical composition. This study examines how NiO bulk and surface properties affect the electrocatalytic performance for the OER while focusing on the prolonged electrochemical activation process. Two ALD methods, namely, plasma-assisted and thermal ALD, are employed as tools to deposit NiO films. Cyclic voltammetry analysis of ∼10 nm films in 1.0 M KOH solution reveals a multistep electrochemical activation process accompanied by phase transformation and delamination of activated nanostructures. The plasma-assisted ALD NiO film exhibits three times higher current density at 1.8 V vs RHE than its thermal ALD counterpart due to enhanced β-NiOOH formation during activation, thereby improving the OER activity. Additionally, the rougher surface formed during activation enhanced the overall catalytic activity of the films. The goal is to unravel the relationship between material properties and the performance of the resulting OER, specifically focusing on how the design of the material by ALD can lead to the enhancement of its electrocatalytic performance.

Stabilizing lattice oxygen redox in layered sodium transition metal oxide through spin singlet state

Reversible lattice oxygen redox reactions offer the potential to enhance energy density and lower battery cathode costs. However, their widespread adoption faces obstacles like substantial voltage hysteresis and poor stability. The current research addresses these challenges by achieving a non-hysteresis, long-term stable oxygen redox reaction in the P3-type Na2/3Cu1/3Mn2/3O2. Here we show this is accomplished by forming spin singlet states during charge and discharge. Detailed analysis, including in-situ X-ray diffraction, shows highly reversible structural changes during cycling. In addition, local CuO6 Jahn-Teller distortions persist throughout, with dynamic Cu-O bond length variations. In-situ hard X-ray absorption and ex-situ soft X-ray absorption study, along with density function theory calculations, reveal two distinct charge compensation mechanisms at approximately 3.66 V and 3.99 V plateaus. Notably, we observe a Zhang-Rice-like singlet state during 3.99 V charging, offering an alternative charge compensation mechanism to stabilize the active oxygen redox reaction.

Stannaborates: tuning the ion conductivity of dodecaborate salts with tin substitution

Metal substituted dodecaborate anions can be coupled with alkali metal cations to have great potential as solid-state ion conductors for battery applications. A tin atom can replace a B-H unit within an unsubstituted dodecaborate cage to produce a stable, polar divalent anion. The chemical and structural change in forming a stannaborate results in a modified crystal structure of respective group 1 metal salts, and as a result, improves the material's ion conductivity. Li2B11H11Sn shows high ion conductivity of ∼8 mS cm-1 at 130 °C, similar to the state-of-the-art LiCB11H12 at these temperatures, however, obtaining high ion conductivity at room temperature is not possible with pristine alkali metal stannaborates.

Influence of the carbazole moiety in self-assembling molecules as selective contacts in perovskite solar cells: interfacial charge transfer kinetics and solar-to-energy efficiency effects

The use of self-assembled molecules (SAMs) as hole transport materials (HTMs) in p-i-n perovskite solar cells (iPSCs) has triggered widespread research due to their relatively easy synthetic methods, suitable energy level alignment with the perovskite material and the suppression of chemical defects. Herein, three new SAMs have been designed and synthesised based on a carbazole core moiety and modified functional groups through an efficient synthetic protocol. The SAMs have been used to understand the SAM/perovskite interface interactions and establish the relationship between the SAM molecular structure and the resulting performance of the perovskite-based devices. The best devices show efficiencies ranging from 18.9% to 17.5% under standard illumination conditions, which are very close to that of our benchmark EADR03, which has been recently commercialised. Our work aims to provide knowledge on the structure of the molecules versus device function relationship.

Electrochemical generation of high-valent oxo-manganese complexes featuring an anionic N5 ligand and their role in O-O bond formation

Generation of high-valent oxomanganese complexes through controlled removal of protons and electrons from low-valent congeners is a crucial step toward the synthesis of functional analogues of the native oxygen evolving complex (OEC). In-depth studies of the water oxidation activity of such biomimetic compounds help in understanding the mechanism of O-O bond formation presumably occurring in the last step of the photosynthetic cycle. Scarce reports of reactive high-valent oxomanganese complexes underscore the impetus for the present work, wherein we report the electrochemical generation of the non-heme oxomanganese(IV) species [(dpaq)MnIV(O)]+ (2) through a proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) process from the hydroxomanganese complex [(dpaq)MnIII(OH)]ClO4 (1). Controlled potential spectroelectrochemical studies of 1 in wet acetonitrile at 1.45 V vs. NHE revealed quantitative formation of 2 within 10 min. The high-valent oxomanganese(IV) transient exhibited remarkable stability and could be reverted to the starting complex (1) by switching the potential to 0.25 V vs. NHE. The formation of 2via PCET oxidation of 1 demonstrates an alternate pathway for the generation of the oxomanganese(IV) transient (2) without the requirement of redox-inactive metal ions or acid additives as proposed earlier. Theoretical studies predict that one-electron oxidation of [(dpaq)MnIV(O)]+ (2) forms a manganese(V)-oxo (3) species, which can be oxidized further by one electron to a formal manganese(VI)-oxo transient (4). Theoretical analyses suggest that the first oxidation event (2 to 3) takes place at the metal-based d-orbital, whereas, in the second oxidation process (3 to 4), the electron eliminates from an orbital composed of equitable contribution from the metal and the ligand, leaving a single electron in the quinoline-dominant orbital in the doublet ground spin state of the manganese(VI)-oxo species (4). This mixed metal-ligand (quinoline)-based oxidation is proposed to generate a formal Mn(VI) species (4), a non-heme analogue of the species 'compound I', formed in the catalytic cycle of cytochrome P-450. We propose that the highly electrophilic species 4 catches water during cyclic voltammetry experiments and results in O-O bond formation leading to electrocatalytic oxidation of water to hydrogen peroxide.

Recent Advances in Flexible Multifunctional Sensors

Wearable electronics have received extensive attention in human-machine interactions, robotics, and health monitoring. The use of multifunctional sensors that are capable of measuring a variety of mechanical or environmental stimuli can provide new functionalities for wearable electronics. Advancements in material science and system integration technologies have contributed to the development of high-performance flexible multifunctional sensors. This review presents the main approaches, based on functional materials and device structures, to improve sensing parameters, including linearity, detection range, and sensitivity to various stimuli. The details of electrical, biocompatible, and mechanical properties of self-powered sensors and wearable wireless systems are systematically elaborated. Finally, the current challenges and future developmental directions are discussed to offer a guide to fabricate advanced multifunctional sensors.

Conjugated Polymer Process Ontology and Experimental Data Repository for Organic Field-Effect Transistors

Polymer-based semiconductors and organic electronics encapsulate a significant research thrust for informatics-driven materials development. However, device measurements are described by a complex array of design and parameter choices, many of which are sparsely reported. For example, the mobility of a polymer-based organic field-effect transistor (OFET) may vary by several orders of magnitude for a given polymer as a plethora of parameters related to solution processing, interface design/surface treatment, thin-film deposition, postprocessing, and measurement settings have a profound effect on the value of the final measurement. Incomplete contextual, experimental details hamper the availability of reusable data applicable for data-driven optimization, modeling (e.g., machine learning), and analysis of new organic devices. To curate organic device databases that contain reproducible and findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR) experimental data records, data ontologies that fully describe sample provenance and process history are required. However, standards for generating such process ontologies are not widely adopted for experimental materials domains. In this work, we design and implement an object-relational database for storing experimental records of OFETs. A data structure is generated by drawing on an international standard for batch process control (ISA-88) to facilitate the design. We then mobilize these representative data records, curated from the literature and laboratory experiments, to enable data-driven learning of process-structure-property relationships. The work presented herein opens the door for the broader adoption of data management practices and design standards for both the organic electronics and the wider materials community.

Artificial Intelligence Meets Flexible Sensors: Emerging Smart Flexible Sensing Systems Driven by Machine Learning and Artificial Synapses

The recent wave of the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution has aroused unprecedented interest in the intelligentialize of human society. As an essential component that bridges the physical world and digital signals, flexible sensors are evolving from a single sensing element to a smarter system, which is capable of highly efficient acquisition, analysis, and even perception of vast, multifaceted data. While challenging from a manual perspective, the development of intelligent flexible sensing has been remarkably facilitated owing to the rapid advances of brain-inspired AI innovations from both the algorithm (machine learning) and the framework (artificial synapses) level. This review presents the recent progress of the emerging AI-driven, intelligent flexible sensing systems. The basic concept of machine learning and artificial synapses are introduced. The new enabling features induced by the fusion of AI and flexible sensing are comprehensively reviewed, which significantly advances the applications such as flexible sensory systems, soft/humanoid robotics, and human activity monitoring. As two of the most profound innovations in the twenty-first century, the deep incorporation of flexible sensing and AI technology holds tremendous potential for creating a smarter world for human beings.

Improving the photovoltage of Cu2O photocathodes with dual buffer layers

Cuprous oxide (Cu2O) is a promising oxide material for photoelectrochemical water splitting (PEC), and increasing its photovoltage is the key to creating efficient overall PEC water-splitting devices. Previous reports are mostly focused on optimizing the energy band alignment between Cu2O and the n-type buffer layer to improve the photovoltage of Cu2O photocathodes. However, the band alignment between the n-type buffer layer and the protective layer is often ignored. In this work, Cu2O photocathodes with a single buffer layer (Ga2O3) and dual buffer layers (Ga2O3/ZnGeOx) are fabricated, and their PEC performances are compared. Results show that after inserting the second buffer layer (ZnGeOx), the onset potential of the Cu2O photocathode increases by 0.16 V. Operando electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements and analysis of the energy-level diagrams of each layer show that an energy level gradient between Ga2O3 and TiO2 is created when ZnGeOx is introduced, which eliminates the potential barrier at the interface of Ga2O3/TiO2 and improves the photovoltage of the Cu2O photocathode. Our work provides an effective approach to improve the photovoltage of photoelectrodes for solar water splitting by introducing dual buffer layers.

Advances in chloride additives for high-efficiency perovskite solar cells: multiple points of view

Chloride (Cl) additives are rather effective in improving the performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) through the modulation of crystallization process and surface morphology. After incorporating Cl-containing additives, the optoelectrical properties of perovskite films, such as the electron/hole diffusion length and carrier lifetime, are greatly enhanced. However, only a trace amount of Cl has been identified in the resultant perovskite film, and the mechanism of efficiency improvement induced by Cl remains unclear. In this review, we discuss organic and inorganic Cl additives systematically from the perspective of their solubility, volatility, cation size and chemical groups. In addition, the roles of residual Cl anions and cations are analyzed in detail. Finally, some valuable future perspectives of Cl additives are proposed.

Synthesis of 2,6-Dimethoxy-p-aminophenol from Hardwood Lignin

Although the multiple functional groups in biomass offer notable chances for producing high-value chemicals, most of the current studies focused on the (deep) defunctionalization of biomass and its derivates. Herein, we present a catalytic approach to valorize birch wood lignin with maintaining the methoxy and hydroxy groups in the final product (i. e., 2,6-dimethoxy-p-aminophenol), which has applications in different sectors such as pharmaceuticals. The proved approach involves four steps with a high yield (19.8 wt % on the basis of used lignin) to 2,6-dimethoxy-p-aminophenol. The native lignin in birch wood was first converted using alkaline aerobic oxidation in the presence of copper ions toward high-yield syringaldehyde, which was then selectively oxidized toward 2,6-dimethoxy-1,4-benzoquinone using H2 O2 and V2 O5 . Oximation of 2,6-dimethoxy-1,4-benzoquinone can selectively form 2,6-dimethoxy-1,4-benzoquinone-4-oxime, which can be quantitatively hydrogenated toward 2,6-dimethoxy-p-aminophenol. This work highlights the unique potential of biomass and its derivates for the sustainable production of high-value products with exploring the value of inherent functional groups.

Structured hybrid photodetectors using confined conducting polymer nanochannels

We design and fabricate hybrid organic inorganic perovskite photodetectors that utilize hole transport layer poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene):poly (styrenesulfonate) PEDOT:PSS confined in alumina nanocylinders. This structural asymmetry in the device where the alumina nanopore template is partially filled with PEDOT:PSS provides features that improve certain device characteristics. The leakage component of the current in such devices is considerably suppressed, resulting in enhanced responsivity and detectivity. The funneling aspect of the photogenerated charge carrier transit ultimately leads to fast detectors as compared to conventional perovskite detectors.

Highly Active Pyrochlore-Type Praseodymium Ruthenate Electrocatalyst for Efficient Acid-Water Oxidation

To produce directly combustible hydrogen from water, highly active, acid-resistant, and economical catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are needed. An electrocatalyst based on praseodymium ruthenate (Pr2Ru2O7) is presented here that greatly outperforms RuO2 for acid-water oxidation. Specifically, at 10 mA cm-2, this electrocatalyst presents a low overpotential (η) of 213 mV and markedly superior stability. Moreover, Pr2Ru2O7 presents a significant rise in turnover frequency (TOF) and a highly intrinsic mass activity of 1618.8 A gRu-1 (η = 300 mV), exceeding the most commonly reported acid OER catalysts. Density functional theory calculations and electronic structure study demonstrate that the Ru 4d-band center related to the longer Ru-O bond with a large radius of Pr ion in this pyrochlore is lower than that in RuO2, which would optimize the binding between the adsorbed oxygen species and catalytic metal sites and enhance the catalytic intrinsic activity.

Spontaneous-Symmetry-Breaking Charge Separation Induced by Pseudo-Jahn-Teller Distortion in Organic Photovoltaic Material

The driving force of charge separation in the initial photovoltaic conversion process is theoretically investigated using ITIC, a nonfullerene acceptor material for organic photovoltaic devices. The density functional theory calculations show that the pseudo-Jahn-Teller (PJT) distortion of the S1 excimer state induces spontaneous symmetry-breaking charge separation between the identical ITIC molecules even without the asymmetry of the surrounding environment. The strong PJT effect arises from the vibronic coupling between the pseudodegenerate S1 and S2 excited states with different irreducible representations (irreps), i.e., Au for S1 and Ag for S2, via the asymmetric vibrational mode with the Au irrep. The vibrational mode responsible for the spontaneous polarization, which is opposite in one ITIC monomer and the other, is the intramolecular C-C stretching vibration between the core IT and terminal IC units. These results suggest that controlling the PJT effect can improve the charge separation efficiency of the initial photovoltaic conversion process.

Application of neutron imaging in observing various states of matter inside lithium batteries

Lithium batteries have been essential technologies and become an integral part of our daily lives, powering a range of devices from phones to electric vehicles. To fully understand and optimize the performance of lithium batteries, it is necessary to investigate their internal states and processes through various characterization methods. Neutron imaging has been an indispensable complementary characterization technique to X-ray imaging or electron microscopy because of the unique interaction principle between neutrons and matter. It provides particular insights into the various states of matter inside lithium batteries, including the Li+ concentration in solid electrodes, the Li plating/stripping behavior of Li-metal anodes, the Li+ diffusion in solid ionic conductors, the distribution of liquid electrolytes and the generation of gases. This review aims to highlight the capabilities and advantages of neutron imaging in characterizing lithium batteries, as well as its current state of application in this field. Additionally, we discuss the potential of neutron imaging to contribute to the ongoing development of advanced batteries through its ability to visualize internal evolution.

Atomically dispersed Zn-Co-N-C catalyst boosting efficient and robust oxygen reduction catalysis in acid via stabilizing Co-N bonds

Transition metal supported N-doped carbon (M-N-C) catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are viewed as the promising candidate to replace Pt-group metal (PGM) for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). However, the stability of M-N-C is extremely challenging due to the demetalation, H2O2 attack, etc. in the strongly oxidative conditions of PEMFCs. In this study, we demonstrate the universal effect of Zn on promoting the stability of atomically dispersed M-Nx/C (M = Co, Fe, Mn) catalysts and the enhancement mechanism is unveiled for the first time. The best-performing dual-metal-site Zn-Co-N-C catalyst exhibits a high half-wave potential (E 1/2) value of 0.81 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) in acid and outstanding durability with no activity decay after 15,000 accelerated degradation test (ADT) cycles at 60 °C, surpassing most reported Co-based PGM-free catalysts in acid media. For comparison, the Co-N-C in the absence of Zn suffers from a rapid degradation after ADT due to the demetalation and higher H2O2 yield. X-ray adsorption spectroscopy (XAS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest the more negative formation energy (by 1.2 eV) and increased charge transfer of Zn-Co dual-site structure compared to Co-N-C could strength the Co-N bonds against the demetalation and the optimized d-band center accounts for the improved ORR kinetics.
