Polyoxometalates-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks Made by Electrodeposition and Carbonization Methods as Cathodes and Anodes for Asymmetric Supercapacitors

Hybrid materials have obtained well-deserved attention for energy storage devices, because they show high capacitances and high energy densities induced by the synergistic effect between complementary components. Polyoxometalate-based metal-organic frameworks (POMOFs) possess the abundant redox-active sites and ordered structures of polyoxometalates (POMs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), respectively. Here, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) NENU-5/PPy/60//FeMo/C was fabricated in which both its electrodes are prepared from POMOF precursors. A typical POMOF material, NENU-5, was first connected with polypyrrole (PPy) through electrodeposition to form the cathode material NENU-5/PPy. Another representative POMOFs material, PMo₁₂ @MIL-100, was carbonized to obtain the anode material FeMo/C. Cathode NENU-5/PPy exhibited an extraordinary capacitance of 508.62 F g^-1 (areal capacitance: 2034.51 mF cm^-2 ). In addition, anode FeMo/C shows excellent cyclic stability attributed to its unique structure. Finally, benefiting from the outstanding capacitances and structural merits of the anode and cathode, assembled asymmetric supercapacitor NENU-5/PPy/60//FeMo/C achieves an energy density of 1.12 mWh cm^-3 at a power density output of 27.78 mW cm^-3 , as well as a notable life of 10 000 cycles with an capacity retention of 80.62 %. Thus, the unique ASC is strongly competitive in high capacitance, long cycle life, and high energy-required energy storage devices.

Porous Graphene-like Carbon from Fast Catalytic Decomposition of Biomass for Energy Storage Applications

A novel carbon material made of porous graphene-like nanosheets was synthesized from biomass resources by a simple catalytic graphitization process using nickel as a catalyst for applications in electrodes for energy storage devices. A recycled fiberboard precursor was impregnated with saturated nickel nitrate followed by high-temperature pyrolysis. The highly exothermic combustion of in situ formed nitrocellulose produces the expansion of the cellulose fibers and the reorganization of the carbon structure into a three-dimensional (3D) porous assembly of thin carbon nanosheets. After acid washing, nickel particles are fully removed, leaving nanosized holes in the wrinkled graphene-like sheets. These nanoholes confer the resulting carbon material with ≈75% capacitance retention, when applied as a supercapacitor electrode in aqueous media at a specific current of 100 A·g^-1 compared to the capacitance reached at 20 mA·g^-1, and ≈35% capacity retention, when applied as a negative electrode for lithium-ion battery cells at a specific current of 3720 mA·g^-1 compared to the specific capacity at 37.2 mA·g^-1. These findings suggest a novel way for synthesizing 3D nanocarbon networks from a cellulosic precursor requiring low temperatures and being amenable to large-scale production while using a sustainable starting precursor such as recycled fiberwood.

Rationally engineered 3D-dendritic cell-like morphologies of LDH nanostructures using graphene-based core-shell structures

Functionalization of graphene-based materials using chemical moieties not only modify the electronic structure of the underlying graphene but also enable in limited enhancement of targeted properties. Surface modification of graphene-based materials using other nanostructures enhances the effective properties by minimally modifying the properties of pristine graphene backbone. In this pursuit, we have synthesized bio-inspired hierarchical nanostructures based on Ni-Co layered double hydroxide on reduced graphene oxide core-shells using template based wet chemical approach. The material synthesized have been characterized structurally and electrochemically. The fabricated dendritic morphology of the composite delivers a high specific capacity of 1056 Cg^-1. A cost effective solid state hybrid supercapacitor device was also fabricated using the synthesized electrode material which shows excellent performance with high energy density and fast charging capability.

Hollow Co3O4@MnO2 Cubic Derived From ZIF-67@Mn-ZIF as Electrode Materials for Supercapacitors

Hollow Co₃O₄@MnO₂ cubic nanomaterials are synthesized by ZIF-67@Mn-ZIF sacrificial precursor through a facile thermal treatment. As a kind of supercapacitor electrode material, it demonstrates high performances, such as specific capacitance of 413 F g⁻¹ at the current density of 0.5 A g⁻¹; as the current densities raised from 0.5 to 10 A g⁻¹ (20 times increasing), there is still ~41% retention of its initial capacitance. These satisfactory electrochemical properties should be put down to the hollow and porous structure and the relative higher BET surface area, which supplies more reactive sites for charge and discharge processes.

A Co-Doped Nanorod-like RuO2 Electrocatalyst with Abundant Oxygen Vacancies for Acidic Water Oxidation

Active and highly stable electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acidic media are currently in high demand as a cleaner alternative to the combustion of fossil fuels. Herein, we report a Co-doped nanorod-like RuO₂ electrocatalyst with an abundance of oxygen vacancies achieved through the facile, one-step annealing of a Ru-exchanged ZIF-67 derivative. The compound exhibits ultra-high OER performance in acidic media, with a low overpotential of 169 mV at 10 mA cm⁻² while maintaining excellent activity, even when exposed to a 50-h galvanostatic stability test at a constant current of 10 mA cm⁻². The dramatic enhancement in OER performance is mainly attributed to the abundance of oxygen vacancies and modulated electronic structure of the Co-doped RuO₂ that rely on a vacancy-related lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism (LOM) rather than adsorbate evolution reaction mechanism (AEM), as revealed and supported by experimental characterizations as well as density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Metal oxide-based supercapacitors: progress and prospectives

Distinguished by particular physical and chemical properties, metal oxide materials have been a focus of research and exploitation for applications in energy storage devices. Used as supercapacitor electrode materials, metal oxides have certified attractive performances for fabricating various supercapacitor devices in a broad voltage window. In comparison with single metal oxides, bimetallic oxide materials are highly desired for overcoming the constraint of the poor electric conductivity of single metal oxide materials, achieving a high capacitance and raising the energy density at this capacitor-level power. Herein, we investigate the principal elements affecting the properties of bimetallic oxide electrodes to reveal the relevant energy storage mechanisms. Thus, the influences of the chemical constitution, structural features, electroconductivity, oxygen vacancies and various electrolytes in the electrochemical behavior are discussed. Moreover, the progress, development and improvement of multifarious devices are emphasized systematically, covering from an asymmetric to hybrid configuration, and from aqueous to non-aqueous systems. Ultimately, some obstinate and unsettled issues are summarized as well as a prospective direction has been given on the future of metal oxide-based supercapacitors.

Nile Blue Functionalized Graphene Aerogel as a Pseudocapacitive Negative Electrode Material across the Full pH Range

The pursuit of new negative electrode materials for redox supercapacitors with a high capacitance, boosted energy, and high rate capability is still a tremendous challenge. Herein, we report a Nile Blue conjugated graphene aerogel (NB-GA) as a negative electrode material with excellent pseudocapacitive performance (with specific capacitance of up to 483 F g^-1 at 1 A g^-1) in all acidic, neutral, and alkaline aqueous electrolytes. The contribution from capacitive charge storage represents 93.4% of the total charge, surpassing the best pseudocapacitors known. To assess the feasibility of NB-GA as a negative electrode material across the full pH range, we fabricated three devices, namely, a symmetric NB-GA||NB-GA device in an acidic (1.0 M H₂SO₄) electrolyte, an NB-GA||MnO₂ device in a pH-neutral (1.0 M Na₂SO₄) electrolyte, and an NB-GA||LDH (LDH = Ni-Co-Fe layered double hydroxide) device in an alkaline (1.0 M KOH) electrolyte. The NB-GA||NB-GA device exhibits a maximum specific energy of 22.1 Wh kg^-1 and a specific power of up to 8.1 kW kg^-1; the NB-GA||MnO₂ device displays a maximum specific energy of 55.5 Wh kg^-1 and a specific power of up to 14.9 kW kg^-1, and the NB-GA||LDH device shows a maximum specific energy of 108.5 Wh kg^-1 and a specific power of up to 25.1 kW kg^-1. All the devices maintain excellent stability over 5000 charge-discharge cycles. The outstanding pseudocapacitive performances of the NB-GA nanocomposites render them a highly promising negative electrode material across the entire pH range.

Ultrastable tetraphenyl-p-phenylenediamine-based covalent organic frameworks as platforms for high-performance electrochemical supercapacitors

In this study we synthesized two tetraphenyl-p-phenylenediamine-based covalent organic frameworks (TPPDA-TPPyr and TPPDA-TPTPE COFs) for potential use in high-performance electrochemical supercapacitors. This excellent performance arose from their structures containing redox-active triphenylamine derivatives and their high surface areas.

Encapsulating metal organic framework into hollow mesoporous carbon sphere as efficient oxygen bifunctional electrocatalyst

Applying metal organic frameworks (MOFs) in electrochemical systems is a currently emerging field owing to the rich metal nodes and highly specific surface area of MOFs. However, the problems for MOFs that need to be solved urgently are poor electrical conductivity and low ion transport. Here we present a facile in situ growth method for the rational synthesis of MOFs@hollow mesoporous carbon spheres (HMCS) yolk–shell-structured hybrid material for the first time. The size of the encapsulated Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-67 (ZIF-67) is well controlled to 100 nm due to the spatial confinement effect of HMCS, and the electrical conductivity of ZIF-67 is also increased significantly. The ZIF@HMCS-25% hybrid material obtained exhibits a highly efficient oxygen reduction reaction activity with 0.823 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode) half-wave potential and an even higher kinetic current density (J_K = 13.8 mA cm⁻²) than commercial Pt/C. ZIF@HMCS-25% also displays excellent oxygen evolution reaction performance and the overpotential of ZIF@HMCS-25% at 10 mA cm⁻² is 407 mV. In addition, ZIF@HMCS-25% is further employed as an air electrode for a rechargeable Zn–air battery, exhibiting a high power density (120.2 mW cm⁻² at 171.4 mA cm⁻²) and long-term charge/discharge stability (80 h at 5 mA cm⁻²). This MOFs@HMCS yolk–shell design provides a versatile method for the application of MOFs as electrocatalysts directly.

Electrochemical Performances Investigation of New Carbon-Coated Nickel Sulfides as Electrode Material for Supercapacitors

A new carbon-coated nickel sulfides electrode material (NST/CNTs@C) has been synthesized through an easy-to-operate process: NiS2/CNTs which was prepared by a hydrothermal method reacted with BTC (1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid) under the condition of water bath heating to obtain the precursor, and then the precursor was calcined in 450 °C under a nitrogen atmosphere to obtain NST/CNTs@C. The electrochemical performance of NST/CNTs@C has been greatly improved because the formation of a carbon-coated layer effectively increased the specific surface area, reduced the charge transport resistance and inhibited the morphological change of nickel sulfides in the charge-discharge process. Compared with pure NiS2 and NiS2/CNTs, NST/CNTs@C presented great specific capacitance (620 F·g-1 at a current density of 1 A·g-1), better cycle stability (49.19% capacitance retention after 1000 cycles) and more superior rate capability (when the current density was raised to 10 A·g-1 the specific capacitance remained 275 F·g-1).

Construction of Hierarchical NiCo2O4@Ni-MOF Hybrid Arrays on Carbon Cloth as Superior Battery-Type Electrodes for Flexible Solid-State Hybrid Supercapacitors

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been considered as a class of promising electrode materials for supercapacitors owing to their large surface area, rich porosity, and variable redox sites; however, direct application of pristine MOFs in energy storage has been largely hindered by their poor electrical conductivity and stability issues. In this work, we demonstrate a facile two-step approach to address the controlled growth of Ni-MOF arrays on the surface of NiCo₂O₄ nanowires by modulating the formation reaction of MOFs. By taking advantage of the intriguing merits from the NiCo₂O₄ core and Ni-MOF shell as well as their synergistic effects, the optimized NiCo₂O₄@Ni-MOF hybrid electrode exhibits boosted electrochemical performance, in terms of high specific capacity (208.8 mA h/g at 2 mA/cm²) and good rate capability. In addition, the assembled flexible solid-state HSC device based on the optimized NiCo₂O₄@Ni-MOF and activated carbon as the cathode and anode achieves a maximum energy density of 32.6 W h/kg at a power density of 348.9 W/kg without sacrificing its outstanding cycling performance (nearly 100% retention over 6000 cycles at 8 mA/cm²) and mechanical stability, outperforming most recently reported MOF-based HSC devices in an aqueous electrolyte. Our work demonstrates the possibility of exploiting novel MOF-based hybrid arrays as battery-type electrodes with enhanced electrochemical properties, which exhibits great potential in flexible energy storage devices.

Combination of bioelectrochemical systems and electrochemical capacitors: Principles, analysis and opportunities

Bioelectrochemical systems combine electrodes and reactions driven by microorganisms for many different applications. The conversion of organic material in wastewater into electricity occurs in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The power densities produced by MFCs are still too low for application. One way of increasing their performance is to combine them with electrochemical capacitors, widely used for charge storage purposes. Capacitive MFCs, i.e. the combination of capacitors and MFCs, allow for energy harvesting and storage and have shown to result in improved power densities, which facilitates the up scaling and application of the technology. This manuscript summarizes the state-of-the-art of combining capacitors with MFCs, starting with the theory and working principle of electrochemical capacitors. We address how different electrochemical measurements can be used to determine (bio)electrochemical capacitance and show how the measurement data can be interpreted. In addition, we present examples of the combination of electrochemical capacitors, both internal and external, that have been used to enhance MFC performance. Finally, we discuss the most promising applications and the main existing challenges for capacitive MFCs.

Toxicity screening of two prevalent metal organic frameworks for therapeutic use in human lung epithelial cells

INTRODUCTION

The flexibility and tunability of metal organic frameworks (MOFs), crystalline porous materials composed of a network of metal ions coordinated by organic ligands, confer their variety of applications as drug delivery systems or as sensing and imaging agents. However, such properties also add to the difficulty in ensuring their safe implementation when interaction with biological systems is considered.

METHODS

In the current study, we used real-time sensorial strategies and cellular-based approaches to allow for fast and effective screening of two MOFs of prevalent use, namely, MIL-160 representative of a hydrophilic and ZIF-8 representative of a hydrophobic framework. The two MOFs were synthesized "in house" and exposed to human bronchial epithelial (BEAS-2B) cells, a pertinent toxicological screening model.

RESULTS

Analysis allowed evaluation and differentiation of particle-induced cellular effects as well identification of different degrees and routes of toxicity, all in a high-throughput manner. Our results show the importance of performing screening toxicity assessments before introducing MOFs to biomedical applications.

DISCUSSION

Our proposed screening assays could be extended to a wider variety of cell lines to allow for identification of any deleterious effects of MOFs, with the range of toxic mechanisms to be differentiated based on cell viability, morphology and cell-substrate interactions, respectively.

CONCLUSION

Our analysis highlights the importance of considering the physicochemical properties of MOFs when recommending a MOF-based therapeutic option or MOFs implementation in biomedical applications.

Design of Hollow Nanostructures for Energy Storage, Conversion and Production

Hollow nanostructures have shown great promise for energy storage, conversion, and production technologies. Significant efforts have been devoted to the design and synthesis of hollow nanostructures with diverse compositional and geometric characteristics in the past decade. However, the correlation between their structure and energy-related performance has not been reviewed thoroughly in the literature. Here, some representative examples of designing hollow nanostructure to effectively solve the problems of energy-related technologies are highlighted, such as lithium-ion batteries, lithium-metal anodes, lithium-sulfur batteries, supercapacitors, dye-sensitized solar cells, electrocatalysis, and photoelectrochemical cells. The great effect of structure engineering on the performance is discussed in depth, which will benefit the better design of hollow nanostructures to fulfill the requirements of specific applications and simultaneously enrich the diversity of the hollow nanostructure family. Finally, future directions of hollow nanostructure design to solve emerging challenges and further improve the performance of energy-related technologies are also provided.

Application of Fe-based metal-organic framework and its pyrolysis products for sulfonamide treatment

The occurrence and fate of antibiotic compounds in water can adversely affect human and animal health; hence, the removal of such substrates from soil and water is indispensable. Herein, we described the synthesis method of mesoporous carbon (MPC) via the pyrolysis route from a coordination polymer Fe-based MIL-53 (or MIL-53, shortly). The MPC structure was analyzed by several physical techniques such as SEM, TEM, BET, FT-IR, VSM, and XRD. The response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to find out the effects of initial concentration, MPC dosage, and pH on the removal efficiency of trimethoprim (TMP) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) antibiotics in water. Under the optimized conditions, the removal efficiencies of TMP and SMX were found to be 87% and 99%, respectively. Moreover, the adsorption kinetic and isotherm studies showed that chemisorption and the monolayer adsorption controlled the adsorption process. The leaching test and recyclability studies indicated that the MPC structure was stable and can be reused for at least four times without any considerable change in the removal efficiency. Plausible adsorption mechanisms were also addressed in this study. Because of high maximum adsorption capacity (85.5 mg/g and 131.6 mg/g for TMP and SMX, respectively) and efficient reusability, MPC is recommended to be a potential adsorbent for TMP and SMX from water media.

Hollow Metal-Organic-Framework Micro/Nanostructures and their Derivatives: Emerging Multifunctional Materials

Hollow metal-organic framework (MOF) micro/nanostructures and their derivatives are attracting a great amount of research interest in recent years because their hierarchical porous structures not only provide abundant, easily accessed metal sites but also endow 3D channels for rapid mass transport. As a result, they demonstrate significant advantages in many applications including catalysis, gas sensors, batteries, supercapacitors, and so on. Nevertheless, studies on hollow MOFs and their derivatives are still at the beginning of this field, and the relationship between their structures and application performances is not yet reviewed comprehensively. Herein, the synthetic strategies and practical applications of hollow micro/nanostructured MOFs and their derivatives are summarized, and their corresponding prospects are also discussed.

Electron Tomography: A Unique Tool Solving Intricate Hollow Nanostructures

Innovations in nanofabrication have expedited advances in hollow-structured nanomaterials with increasing complexity, which, at the same time, set challenges for the precise determination of their intriguing and complicated 3D configurations. Conventional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis typically yields 2D projections of 3D objects, which in some cases is insufficient to reflect the genuine architectures of these 3D nano-objects, providing misleading information. Advanced analytical approaches such as focused ion beam (FIB) and ultramicrotomy enable the real slicing of nanomaterials, realizing the direct observation of inner structures but with limited spatial discrimination. Electron tomography (ET) is a technique that retrieves spatial information from a series of 2D electron projections at different tilt angles. As a unique and powerful tool kit, this technique has experienced great advances in its application in materials science, resolving the intricate 3D nanostructures. Here, the exceptional capability of the ET technique in the structural, chemical, and quantitative analysis of hollow-structured nanomaterials is discussed in detail. The distinct information derived from ET analysis is highlighted and compared with conventional analysis methods. Along with the advances in microscopy technologies, the state-of-the-art ET technique offers great opportunities and promise in the development of hollow nanomaterials.

Dual Functionalized CuMOF-Based Composite for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Herein, we utilized our previously reported highly porous CuMOF, {[Cu₂(L)(H₂O)₂]·(5DMF)·(4H₂O)}_n, decorated with amine and trifluoromethyl functional groups for energy storage application. This robust framework in CuMOF enhances the chemical and thermal stabilities as well as improves the interfacial binding interactions. The poor conductivity of CuMOF usually restricts its practical utility in energy storage systems, due to which rGO was introduced along with CuMOF to form a CuMOF/rGO composite (1) through a facile ultrasonication technique. The synergistic effects between CuMOF and rGO induce a dramatic enhancement in specific capacitance (462 F g^-1 at 0.8 A g^-1) of 1 with a cycle life of 93.75% up to 1000 cycles. The results highlight 1 as an emerging contestant for next generation supercapacitors.

Metal-organic frameworks-derived MnO2/Mn3O4 microcuboids with hierarchically ordered nanosheets and Ti3C2 MXene/Au NPs composites for electrochemical pesticide detection

Transition metal oxides (TMOs) derived from metal - organic frameworks (MOF) combined with two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides possibly pave an innovative pathway for designing promising biosensors. Herein, a novel electrochemical sensing platform has been fabricated for ultra-sensitive determination of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs), based on MOF-derived MnO₂/Mn₃O₄ and Ti₃C₂ MXene/Au NPs composites. Remarkably, the three-dimensional (3D) MnO₂/Mn₃O₄ hierarchical microcuboids derived from Mn-MOF are composed of vertically aligned, highly ordered nanosheets, and further combined with MXene/Au NPs yields synergistic signal amplification effect, with outstanding electrochemical performance, large specific surface area, and good environmental biocompatibility. Under the optimum conditions, the reported sensing platform AChE-Chit/MXene/Au NPs/MnO₂/Mn₃O₄/GCE can be utilized to detect methamidophos in a broad concentration range (10^-12-10^-6 M), together with a good linearity (R = 0.995). Besides that, the biosensor possesses a low limit of detection (1.34 × 10^-13 M), which far exceeds the maximum residue limits (MRLs) for methamidophos (0.01 mg/kg) established by European Union. Additionally, the feasibility of the proposed biosensor for detecting methamidophos in real samples has been demonstrated with excellent recoveries (95.2%-101.3%). Interestingly, the unique structures and remarkable properties of these composites make them attractive materials for various electrochemical sensors for monitoring either pesticide residuals or other environmentally deleterious chemicals.

Ni(OH)2 Nanoflakes Supported on 3D Ni3 Se2 Nanowire Array as Highly Efficient Electrodes for Asymmetric Supercapacitor and Ni/MH Battery

Porous Ni(OH)₂ nanoflakes are directly grown on the surface of nickel foam supported Ni₃ Se₂ nanowire arrays using an in situ growth procedure to form 3D Ni₃ Se₂ @Ni(OH)₂ hybrid material. Owing to good conductivity of Ni₃ Se₂ , high specific capacitance of Ni(OH)₂ and its unique architecture, the obtained Ni₃ Se₂ @Ni(OH)₂ exhibits a high specific capacitance of 1689 µAh cm^-2 (281.5 mAh g^-1 ) at a discharge current of 3 mA cm^-2 and a superior rate capability. Both the high energy density of 59.47 Wh kg^-1 at a power density of 100.54 W kg^-1 and remarkable cycling stability with only a 16.4% capacity loss after 10 000 cycles are demonstrated in an asymmetric supercapacitor cell comprising Ni₃ Se₂ @Ni(OH)₂ as a positive electrode and activated carbon as a negative electrode. Furthermore, the cell achieved a high energy density of 50.9 Wh L^-1 at a power density of 83.62 W L^-1 in combination with an extraordinary coulombic efficiency of 97% and an energy efficiency of 88.36% at 5 mA cm^-2 when activated carbon is replaced by metal hydride from a commercial NiMH battery. Excellent electrochemical performance indicates that Ni₃ Se₂ @Ni(OH)₂ composite can become a promising electrode material for energy storage applications.

Enhancing the Capacitance of Battery-Type Hybrid Capacitors by Encapsulating MgO Nanoparticles in Porous Carbon as Reservoirs for OH- Ions from Electrolytes

A novel design of no-loading and bifunctional positive electrode, serving as an active material and current collector simultaneously, has been constructed by grass-like nickel foam which shows a battery-type performance and excellent areal specific capacity at 0.540 mA h·cm^-2 (over 4500 mF·cm^-2). To obtain a high-performance hybrid capacitor, layered porous carbonaceous composites C/MgO negative electrodes were fabricated, in which MgO nanoparticles serve as "reservoirs" for OH^- ions from the electrolyte. Compared with other carbon materials, such as carbon fibers, hollow nanospheres, and nanotubes, the three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical heterostructures of the C/MgO electrode exhibit a higher storage performance of 424.1 mF·cm^-2. Assembled by these two working electrodes, a hybrid capacitor with uncommon galvanostatic charge/discharge cycling curve has been well-investigated in an alkaline aqueous electrolyte system. This as-coupled hybrid capacitor exhibits an engaging activation process during multiple cycling tests and leads to a drastically improved energy density of 60% (from 80.4 to 128.8 μW h·cm^-2), which can be attributed to a "match behavior" between its positive and negative electrodes.

Porous ZnO/Co3O4/N-doped carbon nanocages synthesized via pyrolysis of complex metal–organic framework (MOF) hybrids as an advanced lithium-ion battery anode

Metal oxides have a large storage capacity when employed as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, they often suffer from poor capacity retention due to their low electrical conductivity and huge volume variation during the charge–discharge process. To overcome these limitations, fabrication of metal oxides/carbon hybrids with hollow structures can be expected to further improve their electrochemical properties. Herein, ZnO-Co3O4 nanocomposites embedded in N-doped carbon (ZnO-Co3O4@N-C) nanocages with hollow dodecahedral shapes have been prepared successfully by the simple carbonizing and oxidizing of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). Benefiting from the advantages of the structural features, i.e. the conductive N-doped carbon coating, the porous structure of the nanocages and the synergistic effects of different components, the as-prepared ZnO-Co3O4@N-C not only avoids particle aggregation and nanostructure cracking but also facilitates the transport of ions and electrons. As a result, the resultant ZnO-Co3O4@N-C shows a discharge capacity of 2373 mAh g−1 at the first cycle and exhibits a retention capacity of 1305 mAh g−1 even after 300 cycles at 0.1 A g−1. In addition, a reversible capacity of 948 mAh g−1 is obtained at a current density of 2 A g−1, which delivers an excellent high-rate cycle ability.

Mechanisms and reutilization of modified biochar used for removal of heavy metals from wastewater: A review

Heavy metals (HMs) pose serious threat to both human and environmental health and therefore, effective and low-cost techniques to remove HMs are urgently required. Because HMs are difficult to be biodegraded and transformed, adsorption is a most promising treatment method in recent times. Biochar (BC), a low-cost and sustainable adsorbent material, has recently attracted much research attention due to its broad application prospects. While BC has many merits, it has a lower HMs adsorption efficiency than traditional activated carbon, limiting its practical applications. Furthermore, the HMs retained by BC are difficult to be desorbed, making the used sorbent material hazardous wastes if not well disposed of under natural conditions. Therefore, it is critical to seek effective surface modifications for BC, to improve its ability to HMs removal ability and the recyclability of BC loaded with HMs. This review represents and evaluates the reported modification methods for BC, the corresponding HMs removal mechanisms and the potential for reutilization of BC loaded with HMs. This review provides a basis for the effective practical application of BC in the treatment of HMs containing wastewater.

Rational shape control of porous Co3O4 assemblies derived from MOF and their structural effects on n-butanol sensing

Porous metal oxides are promising materials for VOCs (volatile organic compounds) chemical sensors, because they have large specific surface areas and enough internal space for the fast gas diffusion. Recently, metal-organic framework (MOF) materials with varied shapes and sizes have been regarded as good templates for preparing porous metal oxides. Herein, four kinds of Co-MOFs were prepared by altering the ratios of Co²⁺ ions and 2-methylimidazole at room temperature, which exhibited well-controlled shapes. Then, corresponding porous Co₃O₄ assembled from nanoparticles was acquired by heating Co-MOFs, and showed a good sensing performance for n-butanol, with a response up to 21.0 toward 100 ppm n-butanol. Moreover, it is found that the shape and the size of Co₃O₄ assemblies can significantly influence their sensing performances. For porous Co₃O₄ assemblies, when the nanoparticles are small enough (˜10 nm), a porous structure with a larger proportion of the nanoparticles close to its surface tends to show a better gas-sensing performance. The findings can be used in the design of gas-sensing materials in the future.

Self-Sacrificial Template-Directed Vapor-Phase Growth of MOF Assemblies and Surface Vulcanization for Efficient Water Splitting

Direct use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with robust pore structures, large surface areas, and high density of coordinatively unsaturated metal sites as electrochemical active materials is highly desirable (rather than using as templates and/or precursors for high-temperature calcination), but this is practically hindered by the poor conductivity and low accessibility of active sites in the bulk form. Herein, a universal vapor-phase method is reported to grow well-aligned MOFs on conductive carbon cloth (CC) by using metal hydroxyl fluorides with diverse morphologies as self-sacrificial templates. Specifically, by further partially on-site generating active Co₃ S₄ species from Co ions in the echinops-like Co-based MOF (EC-MOF) through a controlled vulcanization approach, the resulting Co₃ S₄ /EC-MOF hybrid exhibits much enhanced electrocatalytic performance toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), with overpotentials of 84 and 226 mV required to reach a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 , respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental results reveal that the electron transfer between Co₃ S₄ species and EC-MOF can decrease the electron density of the Co d-orbital, resulting in more electrocatalytically optimized adsorption properties for Co. This study will open up a new avenue for designing highly ordered MOF-based surface active materials for various electrochemical energy applications.
