25th anniversary article: MXenes: a new family of two-dimensional materials

An electrochemical point-of-care testing device for specific diagnosis of the albinism biomarker based on paradigm shift designs

L-tyrosine is a recognized biomarker of albinism, whose endogenous level in human bodies is directly linked to melanin synthesis while no attention has been paid to its specific diagnosis. To this end, we have developed an electrochemical point-of-care testing device based on a molecularly imprinted gel prepared by a universal paradigm shift design to achieve the enhanced specific recognition of the L-tyrosine. Interestingly, this theoretically optimized molecularly imprinted gel validates the recognition pattern of L-tyrosine and optimizes the structure of the polymer itself with the aid of computational chemistry. Besides, modified extended-layer MXene and Au nanoclusters have significantly improved the sensing activity. As a result, the linear diagnostic range of this electrochemical point-of-care testing device for L-tyrosine is 0.1-100 μM in actual human fluids, which fully covers the L-tyrosine levels of healthy individuals and people with albinism. The diagnosis is completed in 90 s and then the results are transmitted by Bluetooth low energy to the smart mobile terminal. Therefore, we are convinced that this electrochemical point-of-care testing device is a promising tool in the future smart medical system.

Ti3C2 (MXene), an advanced carrier system: role in photothermal, photoacoustic, enhanced drugs delivery and biological activity in cancer therapy

In the realm of healthcare and the advancing field of medical sciences, the development of efficient drug delivery systems become an immense promise to cure several diseases. Despite considerable advancements in drug delivery systems, numerous challenges persist, necessitating further enhancements to optimize patient outcomes. Smart nano-carriers, for instance, 2D sheets nano-carriers are the recently emerging nanosheets that may garner attention for targeted delivery of bioactive compounds, drugs, and genes to kill cancer cells. Within these advancements, Ti3C2TX-MXene, characterized as a two-dimensional transition metal carbide, has surfaced as a prominent intelligent nanocarrier within nanomedicine. Its noteworthy characteristics facilitated it as an ideal nanocarrier for cancer therapy. In recent advancements in drug delivery research, Ti3C2TX-MXene 2D nanocarriers have been designed to release drugs in response to specific stimuli, guided by distinct physicochemical  parameters. This review emphasized the multifaceted role of Ti3C2TX-MXene as a potential carrier for delivering poorly hydrophilic drugs to cancer cells, facilitated by various polymer coatings. Furthermore, beyond drug delivery, this smart nanocarrier demonstrates utility in photoacoustic imaging and photothermal therapy, further highlighting its significant role in cellular mechanisms.

Functionalization of Ti3C2 MXene with Diethylenetriamine for a Column-Based Solid-Phase Extraction of Heavy Metals

Transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides, known as MXenes, are attracting attention for their potential application in trace detection of heavy metals. This study presents diethylenetriamine-functionalized Ti3C2 MXene for trace detection of cadmium and lead ions. Functionalization of Ti3C2 significantly improves the adsorption properties of MXenes by replacing native functional groups with silane moieties that contain three amine groups, offering higher affinity for heavy metals. We demonstrate the efficacy of this material as a solid-phase extractor in column-based solid-phase extraction for heavy metal analysis in various food samples. Diethylenetriamine-functionalized Ti3C2 coupled with the flame atomic absorption spectrometer exhibits exceptional analytical performance. While maintaining a robust stability for 15 adsorption-desorption cycles, the proposed method shows detection limits of 0.09 ng mL-1 for cadmium and 1.7 ng mL-1 for lead, with a linear dynamic range of 0.3-50 ng mL-1 for cadmium and 5-90 ng mL-1 for lead, and relative recoveries of 97.50-101.05 and 98.65-100.80% for cadmium and lead ions, respectively. Additionally, relative standard deviations and enrichment factors were calculated as 0.60-4.70% and 42.3 for cadmium ions and 0.65-1.24% and 44.2 for lead ions.

Investigation of the electronic and magnetic properties of bare and oxygen-terminated ordered double transition-metal MXenes for spintronic applications

MXenes are a large and new family of intrinsically magnetic two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal carbides and nitrides. This family has been adding new members since their first discovery in 2011, and has expanded with the exploring of ordered double transition-metal (DTM) MXenes. In this study, we have investigated the electronic and magnetic properties of thirteen bare and fourteen oxygen-terminated DTM MXene structures (M3C2, M3C2O2, MM'C2 and MM'C2O2, M = Ti, Zr, Cr, and Mo; M' = Ti, V, Nb, and Ta). The Hubbard-U parameter strongly depends on the atom environment and the coordination number in the cell. Therefore, for the first time in the literature, we have calculated the Hubbard-U parameters for each considered MXene structure systematically instead of taking them randomly. The investigated MXene structures have striking properties with respect to their magnetic ground states, and show ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic or non-magnetic properties, accompanied by semiconductor to metallic or semi-metallic properties, depending on the transition metal(s) or termination by oxygen. We have performed Monte Carlo simulations to obtain the magnetic phase transition temperature of each structure. Additionally, coercivity and remanence values have been calculated for ferromagnetic cases, and we have investigated the hysteresis features of the MXenes of interest by applying a cyclic magnetic field at several temperatures.

Layered MXene Films via Self-Assembly

MXene has attracted significant attention as a 2D material family due to its metallic conductivity and abundant surface functional groups and has been extensively studied and applied as bulk materials and microscale thin films. MXene possesses ionizable surfaces and edges, as well as high surface area. Its customizable dispersibility demonstrates unique advantages in self-assembly solution processing. Recent studies have demonstrated the application value of layered MXene films at the nanoscale thickness and the reliance of processing on self-assembly techniques. However, this field currently lacks sufficient attention. Here, the regulatory mechanisms are summarized for the preparation of layered MXene films through self-assembly techniques, as well as introduce their applications. Moreover, the future challenges of large-scale applications of MXene self-assembly techniques are proposed. It is believed that this review would provide a dynamic and promising path for the development of layered MXene self-assembly techniques.

ZnFe(PBA)@Ti3C2Tx nanohybrid-based highly sensitive non-enzymatic electrochemical sensor for the detection of glucose in human sweat

The ZnFe prussian blue analogue [ZnFe(PBA)] was infused with Ti3C2Tx (MXene) denoted as ZnFe(PBA)@Ti3C2Tx and was prepared by an in-situ sonication method to use as a non-enzymatic screen printed electrode sensor. The advantage of non-enzymatic sensors is their excellent sensitivity, rapid detection, low cost and simple design. The synthesized ZnFe(PBA)@Ti3C2Tx was characterized for its physical and chemical characterization by XRD, Raman, XPS, EDAX, and FESEM analysis. It possessed multiple functionalized layers and a cubic structure in the nanohybrid. Further, the sensor was investigated by using electroanalytical studies such as cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry analysis. The enhanced surface area with a cubic structure of ZnFe(PBA) and the excellent electrical response of Ti3C2 nanosheet support the advancement of a non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensor with improved sensitivity of 973.42 µA mM-1 cm-2 with the limit of detection (LOD) of 3.036 µM (S/N = 3) and linear detection range (LDR) from 0.01 to 1 mM.

Photoinduced Charge Transfer Empowers Ta4C3 and Nb4C3 MXenes with High SERS Performance

This study introduces two-dimensional (2D) Ta4C3 and Nb4C3 MXenes as outstanding materials for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensing, marking a significant departure from traditional noble-metal substrates. These MXenes exhibit exceptional SERS capabilities, achieving enhancement factors around 105 and detection limits as low as 10-7 M for various analytes, including environmental pollutants and drugs. The core of their SERS functionality is attributed to the robust interfacial photoinduced charge-transfer interactions between the MXenes and the adsorbed molecules. This deep insight not only advances our understanding of MXene materials in SERS applications but also opens new avenues for developing highly sensitive and selective SERS sensors. The potential of Ta4C3 and Nb4C3 MXenes to revolutionize SERS technology underscores their importance in environmental monitoring, food safety, and beyond.

Notable synthesis, properties and chemical gas sensing trends on molybdenum disulphides and diselenides two-dimensional nanostructures: A critical review

Evaluation of synthesis methods, notable properties, and chemical gas sensing properties of molybdenum disulphides and diselenides two-dimensional nanosheets is unfold. This is motivated by the fact that the two dichalcogenides have good sensitivity and selectivity to different harmful gases at ambient temperatures. Synthesis methods explored include exceptional top-down and bottom-up approaches, which consider physical and chemical compositional inceptions. Mechanical exfoliation in both molybdenum disulphides and diselenides nanosheets demonstrate good crystalline purity with structural alterations under varying stacking conditions. These chalcogenides exhibit low energy band gaps of ±1.80 eV for MoS2 and ±1.60 eV for MoSe2, which reduces with introduction of impurities. Thus, upon doping with other metal elements, a transformation from either n-type or p-type semiconductors is normally observed, leading to tuneable electronic properties. Thus, different gases such as methane, ethanol, toluene, ammonia, nitrogen oxide have been systematically detected using molybdenum disulphide and diselenide based thin films as sensing platforms. This review highlights structural, electronic and morphological characteristics of the two dichalcogenides which influences the sensitivity and selectivity ability for a couple of gases at ambient temperatures. The strategies for enhancing the selectivity by introducing defects, impurities and interfacing with other composites expanding the choice of these gases wider is also discussed in details. The review also provides overviews of challenges and limitations that open new research avenues to further enriching both chalcogenides as flexible, stable and cost effective state-of-the-art chemical gas sensors.

MXene@Ni3(HITP)2@AuNPs combined with NiCo@Fc-MWCNTs-LDH for electrochemical detection of extracellular vesicles

This study proposed an electrochemical sensor combining Mxene@Ni3(HITP)2@AuNPs with NiCo@Fc-MWCNTs-LDH for detecting extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from MCF-7 cells. Mxene exhibits high conductivity and large surface area. Ni3(HITP)2 is a novel conductive metal-organic framework (MOF) with outstanding conductivity, capable of loading more gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) when combined with polyetherimide (PEI). Tetrahedra DNA (TDN) is anchored on the substrate through gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) for the specific capture of EVs, with CD63 aptamers carried at their vertices. In the signal layer, the NiCo@Fc-MWCNTs-LDH loaded with CD63 aptamers was prepared as the electrochemical sensor signal label for EVs detection. This electrochemical sensor exhibits high sensitivity, evidenced by a low limit of detection (LOD) of 13.79 particles/mL and a linear range from 1.6 × 102 to 1.6 × 106 particles/mL, underscoring its potential for early cancer diagnosis.

In Situ Construction of Crumpled Ti3C2Tx Nanosheets Confined S-Doping Red Phosphorus by Ti-O-P Bonds for LIBs Anode with Enhanced Electrochemical Performance

Red phosphorus (RP) with a high theoretical specific capacity (2596 mA h g-1) and a moderate lithiation potential (∼0.7 V vs Li+/Li) holds promise as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), which still confronts discernible challenges, including low electrical conductivity, substantial volumetric expansion of 300%, and the shuttle effect induced by soluble lithium polyphosphide (LixPPs). Here, S-NRP@Ti3C2Tx composites were in situ prepared through a phosphorus-amine-based method, wherein S-doped red phosphorus nanoparticles (S-NRP) grew and anchored on the crumpled Ti3C2Tx nanosheets via Ti-O-P bonds, constructing a three-dimensional porous structure which provides fast channels for ion and electron transport and effectively buffers the volume expansion of RP. Interestingly, based on the results of adsorption experiments of polyphosphate and DFT calculation, Ti3C2Tx with abundant oxygen functional groups delivers a strong chemical adsorption effect on LixPPs, thus suppressing the shuttle effect and reducing irreversible capacity loss. Furthermore, S-doping improved the conductivity of red phosphorus nanoparticles, facilitating Li-P redox kinetics. Hence, the S-NRP@Ti3C2Tx anode demonstrates outstanding rate performance (1824 and 1090 mA h g-1 at 0.2 and 4.0 A g-1, respectively) and superior cycling performance (1401 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles at 2.0 A g-1).

Comprehensive Insights on MXene-Based TENGs: from Structures, Functions to Applications

The rapid advancement of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) has introduced a transformative approach to energy harvesting and self-powered sensing in recent years. Nonetheless, the untapped potential of TENGs in practical scenarios necessitates multiple strategies like material selections and structure designs to enhance their output performance. Given the various superior properties, MXenes, a kind of novel 2D materials, have demonstrated great promise in enhancing TENG functionality. Here, this review comprehensively delineates the advantages of incorporating MXenes into TENGs, majoring in six pivotal aspects. First, an overview of TENGs is provided, stating their theoretical foundations, working modes, material considerations, and prevailing challenges. Additionally, the structural characteristics, fabrication methodologies, and family of MXenes, charting their developmental trajectory are highlighted. The selection of MXenes as various functional layers (negative and positive triboelectric layer, electrode layer) while designing TENGs is briefed. Furthermore, the distinctive advantages of MXene-based TENGs and their applications are emphasized. Last, the existing challenges are highlighted, and the future developing directions of MXene-based TENGs are forecasted.

Advances in MXene-based technologies for the remediation of toxic phenols: A comprehensive review

The pressing global issue of organic pollutants, particularly phenolic compounds derived primarily from industrial wastes, poses a significant threat to the environment. Although progress has been made in the development of low-cost materials for phenolic compound removal, their effectiveness remains limited. Thus, there is an urgent need for novel technologies to comprehensively address this issue. In this context, MXenes, known for their exceptional physicochemical properties, have emerged as highly promising candidates for the remediation of phenolic pollutants. This review aims to provide a comprehensive and critical evaluation of MXene-based technologies for the removal of phenolic pollutants, focusing on the following key aspects: (1) The classification and categorization of phenolic pollutants, highlighting their adverse environmental impacts, and emphasizing the crucial need for their removal. (2) An in-depth discussion on the synthesis methods and properties of MXene-based composites, emphasizing their suitability for environmental remediation. (3) A detailed analysis of MXene-based adsorption, catalysis, photocatalysis, and hybrid processes, showcasing current advancements in MXene modification and functionalization to enhance removal efficiency. (4) A thorough examination of the removal mechanisms and stability of MXene-based technologies, elucidating their operating conditions and stability in pollutant removal scenarios. (5) Finally, this review concludes by outlining future challenges and opportunities for MXene-based technologies in water treatment, facilitating their potential applications. This comprehensive review provides valuable insights and innovative ideas for the development of versatile MXene-based technologies tailored to combat water pollution effectively.

Defect-rich porous graphitic phase carbon nitride layer grafted MXene as desolvation promoter for efficient sulfur conversion in extremely harsh conditions

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries exhibit superior theoretical capacity and energy density but are still hindered by the sluggish redox conversion kinetic of lithium polysulfides arising from the significant desolvation barrier, especially under high current density or low-temperature environments. Herein, a two-dimensional (2D) porous graphitic phase carbon nitride/MXene (CN-MX) heterostructure with intrinsic defects was designed via electrostatic adherence and in-situ thermal polycondensation. In the design, the defect-rich CN with abundant catalytic activity and porous structure could efficiently facilitate the lithium polysulfides capture, the dissociation of solvated lithium-ion (Li+), and fast Li+ diffusion. Concurrently, 2D MXene nanosheets with high electronic conductivity could act as charge transport channels and provide electrochemical active sites for sulfur redox reactions. The Li-S cells with CN-MX heterostructure modified separator demonstrated uncommon rate performance (945 mAh/g at 4.0 C) and satisfactory areal capacity (5.5 mAh cm-2 at 0.2 C). Most remarkably, even at 0 °C, the assembled Li-S batteries performed favorable cycle stability (91.6% capacity retention after 100 cycles at 0.5 C) and outstanding rate performance (695 mAh/g at 2.0 C), and superior high loading performance (5.1 mAh cm-2 at 0.1 C). This work offers exciting new insights to enable Li-S batteries to operate in extreme environments.

Tailoring the peroxidase-like properties of Mo atom nanoclusters/N-MXene nanozymes for sensitive colorimetric detection of glutathione

Although nanozyme engineering has made tremendous progress, there is a huge gap between them and natural enzymes due to the enormous challenge of precisely adjusting the geometric and electronic structure of active sites. Considering that intentionally adjusting the metal-carrier interactions may bring the promising catalytic activity, in this work, a novel Mo atom nanocluster is successfully synthesized using nitrogen-doped Mxene (MoACs/N-MXene) nanozymes as carriers. The constructed MoACs/N-MXene displays excellent peroxidase-like catalytic activity and kinetics, outweighing its N-MXene and Mo nanoparticles (NPs)-MXene references and natural horse radish peroxidase. This work not only reports a successful example of MoACs/N-MXene nanozyme as a guide for achieving peroxidase-mimic performance of nanozymes for colorimetric glutathione sensing at 0.29 μM, but also expands the application prospects of two-dimensional MXene nanosheets by reasonably introducing metal atomic clusters and nonmetal atom doping and exploring related nanozyme properties.

Modification Strategies for Development of 2D Material-Based Electrocatalysts for Alcohol Oxidation Reaction

2D materials, such as graphene, MXenes (metal carbides and nitrides), graphdiyne (GDY), layered double hydroxides, and black phosphorus, are widely used as electrocatalyst supports for alcohol oxidation reactions (AORs) owing to their large surface area and unique 2D charge transport channels. Furthermore, the development of highly efficient electrocatalysts for AORs via tuning the structure of 2D support materials has recently become a hot area. This article provides a critical review on modification strategies to develop 2D material-based electrocatalysts for AOR. First, the principles and influencing factors of electrocatalytic oxidation of alcohols (such as methanol and ethanol) are introduced. Second, surface molecular functionalization, heteroatom doping, and composite hybridization are deeply discussed as the modification strategies to improve 2D material catalyst supports for AORs. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of 2D material-based electrocatalysts for AORs are outlined. This review will promote further efforts in the development of electrocatalysts for AORs.

Backscattering silicon spectrometer (BASIS): sixteen years in advanced materials characterization

Quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) is an experimental technique that can measure parameters of mobility, such as diffusion jump rate and jump length, as well as localized relaxations of chemical species (molecules, ions, and segments) at atomic and nanometer length scales. Due to the high penetrative power of neutrons and their sensitivity to neutron scattering cross-section of chemical species, QENS can effectively probe mobility inside most bulk materials. This review focuses on QENS experiments performed using a neutron backscattering silicon spectrometer (BASIS) to explore the dynamics in various materials and understand their structure-property relationship. BASIS is a time-of-flight near-backscattering inverted geometry spectrometer with very high energy resolution (approximately 0.0035 meV of full width at half maximum), allowing measurements of dynamics on nano to picosecond timescales. The science areas studied with BASIS are diverse, with a focus on soft matter topics, including traditional biological and polymer science experiments, as well as measurements of fluids ranging from simple hydrocarbons and aqueous solutions to relatively complex room-temperature ionic liquids and deep-eutectic solvents, either in the bulk state or confined. Additionally, hydrogen confined in various materials is routinely measured on BASIS. Other topics successfully investigated at BASIS include quantum fluids, spin glasses, and magnetism. BASIS has been in the user program since 2007 at the Spallation Neutron Source of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, an Office of Science User Facility supported by the U.S. Department of Energy. Over the past sixteen years, BASIS has contributed to various scientific disciplines, exploring the structure and dynamics of many chemical species and their fabrication for practical applications. A comprehensive review of BASIS contributions and capabilities would be an asset to the materials science community, providing insights into employing the neutron backscattering technique for advanced materials characterization.

In Situ Growth of Nanorod-Shaped Ni,Co-MOF on Mo2CTx MXene Surface to Realize Enhanced Energy Storage for Supercapacitors

Mo2CTx MXene materials, known for their high conductivity and abundant surface functional groups, are widely utilized as electrode materials in supercapacitors. However, their tendency to stack during electrochemical energy storage hinders their performance. The in situ growth of nanorod-shaped Ni,Co bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (Ni,Co-MOF) on Mo2CTx MXene effectively mitigates this stacking. With their porous structure and high specific surface area, MOFs excel in energy storage, and bimetallic MOFs outperform monometallic ones. The synergy between Mo2CTx MXene and Ni,Co-MOF yields an outstanding performance. In a three-electrode system with 1 M KOH, the Mo2CTx/Ni,Co-MOF composite shows a specific capacitance of 58 mAh g-1 (56.26 mAh cm-3) at 1 A g-1. When used in a Mo2CTx/Ni,Co-MOF//AC asymmetric supercapacitor, it achieves an energy density of 22.7 Wh kg-1(0.022 Wh cm-3) at a power density of 293 W kg-1 (0.284 W cm-3). Future work will focus on enhancing synthesis methods, exploring different bimetallic combinations, and optimizing electrode designs for gas sensors, batteries, fuel cells, biological sensors, and so on, with outstanding performance and sustainability.

Computational Investigation on Cr-Doped Sc2CO2 MXene under Strain for Electronic Properties, Quantum Capacitance, and Photocatalytic Activity

Sc2CO2 MXene has potential applications in energy storage and optoelectronics due to its superior structure and excellent properties. The electronic properties, quantum capacitance, and photocatalytic activity of Cr-doped Sc2CO2 under strain are studied by the density functional theory. Cr doping makes the system produce magnetism. The spin-down states of Sc2CO2-Cr under strain are direct semiconductors, while their spin-up states are indirect semiconductors. Sc2CO2-Cr under +5, -5, -3, and -2% strains in an aqueous system are suitable for cathode material. A large voltage drastically modulates the type of electrode materials. Sc2CO2-Cr under strains from 0 to +2% can perform the oxygen evolution reaction at an alkaline environment, while the Sc2CO2-Cr system under strain is a good for CO2 photocatalysis at pH 0 and 7.

Surface Termination (-O, -F or -OH) and Metal Doping on the HER Activity of Mo2CTx MXene

Two-dimensional MXenes have recently garnered significant attention as electrocatalytic materials for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, previous theoretical studies mainly focused on the effect of pure functional groups while neglecting hybrid functional groups that are commonly observed in experiments. Herein, we investigated the hybrid functionalized Mo2CTx MXene (T=-O, -F or -OH) to probe the HER properties. In binary O/F co-functionalization, the presence of F groups would attenuate the H adsorption and lead to the enhanced HER activity than the fully O-terminated Mo2CO2. However, the surface HER activity of ternary O/F/OH functionalized Mo2CTx is not satisfactory owing to the relatively weak H adsorption capacity. To further enhance the catalytic activity, modification was performed by introducing another metal element into its lattice structure. The doped metal (Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) exhibits reduced charge transfer to O compared to Mo atoms, leading to enhanced H adsorption and improved overall activity. The synergistic effect of hybrid functionalization and TM modification provides useful guidance for achieving feasible Mo2CTx candidates with high HER performance, which can be applied to the electrocatalytic applications of other MXenes.

Layer-Dependent Gas Sensing Mechanism of 2D Titanium Carbide (Ti3C2Tx) MXene

Monolayers of Ti3C2Tx MXene and bilayer structures formed by partially overlapping monolayer flakes exhibit opposite sensing responses to a large scope of molecular analytes. When exposed to reducing analytes, monolayer MXene flakes show increased electrical conductivity, i.e., an n-type behavior, while bilayer structures become less conductive, exhibiting a p-type behavior. On the contrary, both monolayers and bilayers show unidirectional sensing responses with increased resistivity when exposed to oxidizing analytes. The sensing responses of Ti3C2Tx monolayers and bilayers are dominated by entirely different mechanisms. The sensing behavior of MXene monolayers is dictated by the charge transfer from adsorbed molecules and the response direction is consistent with the donor/acceptor properties of the analyte and the intrinsic n-type character of Ti3C2Tx. In contrast, the bilayer MXene structures always show the same response regardless of the donor/acceptor character of the analyte, and the resistivity always increases because of the intercalation of molecules between the Ti3C2Tx layers. This study explains the sensing behavior of bulk MXene sensors based on multiflake assemblies, in which this intercalation mechanism results in universal increase in resistance that for many analytes is seemingly inconsistent with the n-type character of the material. By scaling MXene sensors down from multiflake to single-flake level, we disentangled the charge transfer and intercalation effects and unraveled their contributions. In particular, we show that the charge transfer has a much faster kinetics than the intercalation process. Finally, we demonstrate that the layer-dependent gas sensing properties of MXenes can be employed for the design of sensor devices with enhanced molecular recognition.

Regulating the electronic properties, quantum capacitance and photocatalytic activity of Sc2CO2 based on Y doping and strain

The doping of transition metals can effectively modulate the electronic structures and enhance the photocatalytic activity of MXenes. The electronic and photocatalytic properties, as well as the quantum capacitance of Sc2CO2-Y under biaxial strain, were studied by density functional theory. Sc2CO2-Y is a direct semiconductor and keeps its semiconductor character under strain. Sc2CO2-Y under tensile strain has higher photocatalytic activity than under compressive strain. In particular, Sc2CO2-Y at 2% strain has the slowest recombination rate of electrons and holes because of the largest . Sc2CO2-Y under strain is a potential cathode material. Its large potential keeps the character of cathode materials for Sc2CO2-Y under strain. Sc2CO2-Y under tensile strain has better conductivity, especially under 5% strain, due to having the largest Re (ε0). Sc2CO2-Y under strain can perform the HER, but fails to perform the OER at pH = 0, and tensile strain increases the reduction capacity of Sc2CO2-Y. Under strains from -2% to 2%, Sc2CO2-Y can perform the OER in an alkaline environment. Sc2CO2-Y is a good CO2 photocatalyst in acidic environments; the increase of pH value weakens the N2 reducing capacity of Sc2CO2-Y under strain. Its work function, charge transfer and optical properties are also explored.

Fracture Mechanisms and Crack Propagation in Monolayer Ti3C2Tx under Nanoindentation: The Influence of Surface Terminations and Vacancy Defects

Monolayer MXenes are a novel class of two-dimensional transition metal carbides/nitrides with fascinating physicochemical properties. Despite recent advances in the study of MXenes' mechanical properties, a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental physical mechanisms that affect fracture due to surface terminations and vacancy defects in MXenes under nanoindentation remains largely unexplored. Here, we address this gap using molecular dynamics simulations and nanoindentation theory to investigate the effects of surface terminations and vacancy defects on the fracture behavior of Ti3C2Tx MXenes. By inducing the rupture of monolayer MXenes through nanoindentation, we find that bare Ti3C2 exhibits brittle fracture behavior. The presence of surface terminations and vacancy defects reduces the load-carrying capacity and flexibility of MXenes. Interestingly, surface terminations increase the stiffness of the structure, while vacancy defects have the opposite effect. We also find that high concentrations of surface oxidation impart ductile fracture characteristics to MXenes and increase the maximum crack length at failure. Additionally, defects exceeding the critical concentration can effectively prevent brittle crack propagation by causing frequent crack deflection and blunting crack tips. Combining these findings, we propose a new strategy to synergistically enhance the fracture toughness of MXenes through high concentrations of surface oxidation and vacancy defects exceeding the critical concentration without significantly affecting strength and stiffness, thereby avoiding catastrophic failure in MXene monolayers due to brittle fracture. This work provides fundamental insights into the mechanical properties and fracture mechanisms of monolayer MXenes.

Unveiling the Hidden Potential of Two-Dimensional Black Phosphorus for Advanced Supercapacitor Applications

In response to the contemporary energy crisis, researchers have intensified efforts to explore green and renewable energy sources alongside developing robust energy storage devices. Supercapacitors stand out among various storage options due to their high-power density and rapid charge-discharge cycles. However, their lower energy density poses a challenge, leading to exploration of diverse electrode materials, including black phosphorus (BP). BP, with its two-dimensional (2D) layered structure akin to graphene, exhibits exceptional properties, making it a promising candidate for various applications, including energy storage. This Perspective focuses on the properties of BP as an electrode material for supercapacitors, covering electrochemical performance, charge storage mechanisms, and synthesis methods. Challenges such as restacking and stability have prompted innovative strategies to enhance BP-based supercapacitors, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Furthermore, the fabrication of BP-based hybrid nanocomposites with carbonaceous polymers, conducting polymers, and other 2D materials is discussed, highlighting their efficacy as electrode materials along with future outlooks.

MXenes for Wearable Physical Sensors toward Smart Healthcare

The gradual rise of personal healthcare awareness is accelerating the deployment of wearable sensors, whose ability of acquiring physiological vital signs depends on sensing materials. MXenes have distinct chemical and physical superiorities over other 2D nanomaterials for wearable sensors. This review presents a comprehensive summary of the latest advancements in MXenes-based materials for wearable physical sensors. It begins with an introduction to special structural features of MXenes for sensing performance, followed by an in-depth exploration of versatile functionalities. A detailed description of different sensing mechanisms is also included to illustrate the contribution of MXenes to the sensing performance and its improvement. In addition, the real-world applications of MXenes-based physical sensors for monitoring different physiological signs are included as well. The remaining challenges of MXenes-based materials for wearable physical sensors and their promising opportunities are finally narrated, in conjunction with a prospective for future development.

Emerging Two-Dimensional Materials for Proton-Based Energy Storage

The rapid diffusion kinetics and smallest ion radius make protons the ideal cations toward the ultimate energy storage technology combining the ultrafast charging capabilities of supercapacitors and the high energy densities of batteries. Despite the concept existing for centuries, the lack of satisfactory electrode materials hinders its practical development. Recently, the rapid advancement of the emerging two-dimensional (2D) materials, characterized by their ultrathin morphology, interlayer van der Waals gaps, and distinctive electrochemical properties, injects promises into future proton-based energy storage systems. In this perspective, we comprehensively summarize the current advances in proton-based energy storage based on 2D materials. We begin by providing an overview of proton-based energy storage systems, including proton batteries, pseudocapacitors and electrical double layer capacitors. We then elucidate the fundamental knowledge about proton transport characteristics, including in electrolytes, at electrolyte/electrode interfaces, and within electrode materials, particularly in 2D material systems. We comprehensively summarize specific cases of 2D materials as proton electrodes, detailing their design concepts, proton transport mechanism and electrochemical performance. Finally, we provide insights into the prospects of proton-based energy storage systems, emphasizing the importance of rational design of 2D electrode materials and matching electrolyte systems.

MXene Synthesis and Carbon Capture Applications: Mini-Review

MXenes, a class of two-dimensional transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides, have garnered significant attention due to their remarkable potential for energy storage, electrocatalysis, and gas separation applications. The fabrication processes of MXene involve building up the MXene structure from constituent elements and the selective elimination of M-A bonds from the precursor MAX. However, considerable efforts are still required to design and develop efficient MXene-based technologies. This review article aims to briefly analyse the synthesis methods employed for MXene production, ranging from direct synthesis and conventional chemical wet etching approach to the more recent molten salt etching technique. The review highlights the advancements made in achieving precise control over the terminal groups, which is paramount for tailoring the properties of MXenes for specific applications. Furthermore, the potential of MXene-based materials for carbon capture applications, particularly in developing advanced adsorbents, is emphasized. The in-depth examination of MXene synthesis techniques and their implications for carbon capture applications provides a solid foundation for developing and optimizing these promising materials.

Liquid-Phase Exfoliation of 3D Metal-Organic Frameworks into Nanosheets

Traditionally, the acquisition of 2D materials involved the exfoliation of layered crystals. However, the anisotropic bonding arrangements within 3D crystals indicate they are mechanically reminiscent of 2D counterparts and could also be exfoliated into nanosheets. This report delineates the preparation of 2D nanosheets from six representative 3D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) through liquid-phase exfoliation. Notably, the cleavage planes of exfoliated nanosheets align perpendicular to the direction of the minimum elastic modulus (Emin) within the pristine 3D frameworks. The findings suggest that the in-plane and out-of-plane bonding forces of the exfoliated nanosheets can be correlated with the maximum elastic modulus (Emax) and Emin of the 3D frameworks, respectively. Emax influences the ease of cleaving adjacent layers, while Emin governs the ability to resist cracking of layers. Hence, a combination of large Emax and small Emin indicates an efficient exfoliation process, and vice versa. The ratio of Emax/Emin, denoted as Amax/min, is adopted as a universal index to quantify the ease of mechanical exfoliation for 3D MOFs. This ratio, readily accessible through mechanical experiments and computation, serves as a valuable metric for selecting appropriate exfoliation methods to produce surfactant-free 2D nanosheets from various 3D materials.

Plasma-Activated Solutions Regulate Surface-Terminating Groups Enhancing Pseudocapacitive Ti3C2Tx Electrode Performance

2D transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) are actively pursued as pseudocapacitive materials for supercapacitors owing to their advantages in electronic conductivity and surface reactivity. Increasing the fraction of ─O terminal groups in Ti3C2Tx is a promising approach to improve the pseudocapacitive charge storage in H2SO4 electrolytes, but it suffers from a lack of effective functionalization methods and stability of the groups in practical operation. Here a low-temperature and environment-friendly approach via the interaction of nonequilibrium plasmas with Ti3C2Tx dispersion is demonstrated to generate abundant and stable surface-terminating O groups. The impact of the discharge environment (Ar, O2, and H2) on the structural characteristics and electrochemical performance of Ti3C2Tx nanosheets is studied. The Ti3C2Tx modified in Ar and H2 maintains their original morphology but a significantly lower F content. Consequently, an extraordinarily high content (78.5%) of surface-terminating O groups is revealed by the high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra for the Ti3C2Tx samples modified in H2 plasma-treated solutions. Additionally, the Ti3C2Tx treated using H2 plasmas exhibits the best capacitive performance of 418.3 F g-1 at 2 mV s-1, which can maintain 95.88% capacity after 10 000 cycles. These results contribute to the development of advanced nanostructured pseudocapacitive electrode materials for renewable energy storage applications.

Heterointerface engineering of MXene: Advanced applications in environmental remediation

Contemporary global industrialization, coupled with the relentless growth of the population, has led to a persistent escalation in the emission and accumulation of various toxic and harmful chemicals in the environment, severely disrupting the ecological balance. The development of efficient environmental cleanup materials is a crucial scientific and technological concern. Since the groundbreaking work on Ti3C2Tx in 2011, there has been a huge growing interest in MXene-based composites developed through heterointerface engineering due to its high surface area, hydrophilicity, eco-friendliness, biocompatibility, easy functionalization, excellent thermal/mechanical properties, metal conductivity and rich electronic density. In the area of environmental remediation, MXene-based composites obtained through heterointerface engineering strategies have the ability to effectively remove and systematically monitor contaminants in comparison to virgin MXene, thanks to the synergistic effects and complementary benefits. Heterointerface engineering strategy increases specific surface area, introduces catalytic sites, constructs heterojunctions/Schottky junctions, and facilitates carrier migration and electron-hole separation. These novel MXene-based composites represent significant advances in MXene research and deserve a comprehensive review. Although several excellent reviews and perspectives on the application of MXene-based composites in environmental remediation have been published, there is still a scarcity of comprehensive and systematic assessments on the reliable data and mechanisms of various MXene-based composite materials for pollutant removal and monitoring. In this focused review, the first part briefly introduces the common preparation strategies and characterization methods of single MXene and MXene-based composites, and the second part details the innovative application of MXene-based composites (involving the amalgamation of MXene with metal oxides, metal sulfide, g-C3N4, layered double hydroxides, metal-organic frameworks, single atom/quantum dots, polymers, etc.) in the field of environmental remediation, including carbon dioxide reduction, nitrogen monoxide and volatile organic compounds removal, antibiotic and heavy metal ions degradation, summarizing the relevant performance and mechanisms. Furthermore, the recent advancements in the utilization of MXene-based composites for the sensing of emerging environmental contaminants (antibiotic and antibiotic resistance genes) are summarized. Finally, an outline of the existing challenges and future prospects on this exciting field was narrated for plausible real-world use. This review will help to inspire the diverse design of MXene-based composites and to advance research related to their application in the environmental sector.

2D materials for Tribo-corrosion and -oxidation protection: A review

The recent rise of 2D materials has extended the opportunities of tuning a variety of properties. Tribo-corrosion, the complex synergy between mechanical wear and chemical corrosion, poses significant challenges across numerous industries where materials are subjected to both tribological stressing and corrosive environments. This intricate interplay often leads to accelerated material degradation and failure. This review critically assesses the current state of utilizing 2D nanomaterials to enhance tribo-corrosion and -oxidation behavior. The paper summarizes the fundamental knowledge about tribo-corrosion and -oxidation mechanisms before assessing the key contributions of 2D materials, including graphene, transition metal chalcogenides, hexagonal boron nitride, MXenes, and black phosphorous, regarding the resulting friction and wear behavior. The protective roles of these nanomaterials against corrosion and oxidation are investigated, highlighting their potential in mitigating material degradation. Furthermore, we delve into the nuanced interplay between mechanical and corrosive factors in the specific application of 2D materials for tribo-corrosion and -oxidation protection. The synthesis of key findings underscores the advancements achieved through integrating 2D nanomaterials. An outlook for future research directions is provided, identifying unexplored avenues, and proposing strategies to propel the field forward. This analysis aims at guiding future investigations and developments at the dynamic intersection of 2D nanomaterials, tribo-corrosion, and -oxidation protection.

Recent Advances in Non-Ti MXenes: Synthesis, Properties, and Novel Applications

One of the most fascinating 2D nanomaterials (NMs) ever found is various members of MXene family. Among them, the titanium-based MXenes, with more than 70% of publication-related investigations, are comparatively well studied, producing fundamental foundation for the 2D MXene family members with flexible properties, familiar with a variety of advanced novel technological applications. Nonetheless, there are still more candidates among transitional metals (TMs) that can function as MXene NMs in ways that go well beyond those that are now recognized. Systematized details of the preparations, characteristics, limitations, significant discoveries, and uses of the novel M-based MXenes (M-MXenes), where M stands for non-Ti TMs (M = Sc, V, Cr, Y, Zr, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta, W, and Lu), are given. The exceptional qualities of the 2D non-Ti MXene outperform standard Ti-MXene in several applications. There is many advancement in top-down as well as bottom-up production of MXenes family members, which allows for exact control of the M-characteristics MXene NMs to contain cutting-edge applications. This study offers a systematic evaluation of existing research, covering everything in producing complex M-MXenes from primary limitations to the characterization and selection of their applications in accordance with their novel features. The development of double metal combinations, extension of additional metal candidates beyond group-(III-VI)B family, and subsequent development of the 2D TM carbide/TMs nitride/TM carbonitrides to 2D metal boride family are also included in this overview. The possibilities and further recommendations for the way of non-Ti MXene NMs are in the synthesis of NMs will discuss in detail in this critical evaluation.

Silica-Ti3C2Tx MXene Nanoarchitectures with Simultaneous Adsorption and Photothermal Properties

Layered Ti3C2Tx MXene has been successfully intercalated and exfoliated with the simultaneous generation of a 3D silica network by treating its cationic surfactant intercalation compound (MXene-CTAB) with an alkoxysilane (TMOS), resulting in a MXene-silica nanoarchitecture, which has high porosity and specific surface area, together with the intrinsic properties of MXene (e.g., photothermal response). The ability of these innovative MXene silica materials to induce thermal activation reactions of previously adsorbed compounds is demonstrated here using NIR laser irradiation. For this purpose, the pinacol rearrangement reaction has been selected as a first model example, testing the effectiveness of NIR laser-assisted photothermal irradiation in these processes. This work shows that Ti3C2Tx-based nanoarchitectures open new avenues for applications that rely on the combined properties inherent to their integrated nanocomponents, which could be extended to the broader MXene family.

A Sweet Synthesis of MXenes

Two-dimensional transition metal carbides/nitrides (MXenes) have shown great promise in various applications. However, mass production of MXenes suffers from the excessive use of toxic fluorine-containing reagents. Herein, a new method was validated for synthesizing MXenes from five MAX ceramics. The method features a minimized (stoichiometric) dosage of F-containing reagent (NaBF4) and polyols (glycerol, erythritol, and xylitol) as the reaction solvent. Due to the sweetness of polyols and the low environmental impact, we refer to this method as a "sweet" synthesis of MXenes. An in-depth molecular dynamics simulation study, combined with experimental kinetic parameters, further revealed that the diffusion of F- in the confined interplanar space is rate-determining for the etching reaction. The expansion of interlayer spacing by polyols effectively reduces the diffusion activation energy of F- and accelerates the etching reaction.

Semiconducting Properties of Delaminated Titanium Nitride Ti4N3Tx MXene with Gate-Tunable Electrical Conductivity

MXenes have garnered significant attention due to their atomically thin two-dimensional structure with metallic electronic properties. However, it has not yet been fully achieved to discover semiconducting MXenes to implement them into gate-tunable electronics such as field-effect transistors and phototransistors. Here, a semiconducting Ti4N3Tx MXene synthesized by using a modified oxygen-assisted molten salt etching method under ambient conditions, is reported. The oxygen-rich synthesis environment significantly enhances the etching reaction rate and selectivity of Al from a Ti4AlN3 MAX phase, resulting in well-delaminated and highly crystalline Ti4N3Tx MXene with minimal defects and high content of F and O, which led to its improved hydrophobicity and thermal stability. Notably, the synthesized Ti4N3Tx MXene exhibited p-type semiconducting characteristics, including gate-tunable electrical conductivity, with a current on-off ratio of 5 × 103 and a hole mobility of ∼0.008 cm2 V-1 s-1 at 243 K. The semiconducting property crucial for thin-film transistor applications is evidently associated with the surface terminations and the partial substitution of oxygen in the nitrogen lattice, as corroborated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Furthermore, the synthesized Ti4N3Tx exhibits strong light absorption characteristics and photocurrent generation. These findings highlight the delaminated Ti4N3Tx as an emerging two-dimensional semiconducting material for potential electronic and optoelectronic applications.

Bioelectronics for electrical stimulation: materials, devices and biomedical applications

Bioelectronics is a hot research topic, yet an important tool, as it facilitates the creation of advanced medical devices that interact with biological systems to effectively diagnose, monitor and treat a broad spectrum of health conditions. Electrical stimulation (ES) is a pivotal technique in bioelectronics, offering a precise, non-pharmacological means to modulate and control biological processes across molecular, cellular, tissue, and organ levels. This method holds the potential to restore or enhance physiological functions compromised by diseases or injuries by integrating sophisticated electrical signals, device interfaces, and designs tailored to specific biological mechanisms. This review explains the mechanisms by which ES influences cellular behaviors, introduces the essential stimulation principles, discusses the performance requirements for optimal ES systems, and highlights the representative applications. From this review, we can realize the potential of ES based bioelectronics in therapy, regenerative medicine and rehabilitation engineering technologies, ranging from tissue engineering to neurological technologies, and the modulation of cardiovascular and cognitive functions. This review underscores the versatility of ES in various biomedical contexts and emphasizes the need to adapt to complex biological and clinical landscapes it addresses.

Advancements in MAX phase materials: structure, properties, and novel applications

The MAX phase represents a diverse class of nanolaminate materials with intriguing properties that have received incredible global research attention because they bridge the divide separating metals and ceramics. Despite the numerous potential applications of MAX phases, their complex structure leads to a scarcity of readily accessible pure MAX phases. As a result, in-depth research on synthesis methods, characteristics, and structure is frequently needed for appropriate application. This review provides a comprehensive understanding of the recent advancements and growth in MAX phases, focusing on their complex crystal structures, unique mechanical, thermal, electrical, crack healing, corrosion-resistant properties, as well as their synthesis methods and applications. The structure of MAX phases including single metal MAX, i-MAX and o-MAX was discussed. Moreover, recent advancements in understanding MAX phase behaviour under extreme conditions and their potential novel applications across various fields, including high-temperature coatings, energy storage, and electrical and thermal conductors, biomedical, nanocomposites, etc. were discussed. Moreover, the synthesis techniques, ranging from bottom-up to top-down methods are scrutinized for their efficacy in tailoring MAX phase properties. Furthermore, the review explores the challenges and opportunities associated with optimizing MAX phase materials for specific applications, such as enhancing their oxidation resistance, tuning their mechanical properties, and exploring their functionality in emerging technologies. Overall, this review aims to provide researchers and engineers with a comprehensive understanding of MAX phase materials and inspire further exploration into their versatile applications in materials science and engineering.

Platinum monolayer dispersed on MXenes for electrocatalyzed hydrogen evolution: a first-principles study

Maximizing platinum's atomic utilization and understanding the anchoring mechanism between platinum moieties and their supports are crucial for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Using density functional theory, we investigate the catalyst of a Pt monolayer on the two-dimensional Mo2TiC2 substrate (PtML/Mo2TiC2) for the reaction. This Pt monolayer shows a Pt(111)-like pattern, with its Pt-Pt bond elongated by about 0.1 Å compared to Pt(111); charge transfer from Mo2TiC2 to the Pt monolayer leads to significant charge accumulation on Pt. This substantial monolayer metal-support interaction optimizes hydrogen adsorption toward optimal HER activity under both constant charge and potential conditions, making PtML/Mo2TiC2 a promising HER catalyst. Detailed studies reveal that the dominant Volmer-Tafel mechanism in the HER occurs on the 1 monolayer hydrogen-covered PtML/Mo2TiC2 surface. The surface Pourbaix diagram identifies this as the stable surface termination under the electrochemical reaction conditions. These findings provide insights into designing stable, efficient, and low platinum-loaded HER catalysts.

Research progress of functional MXene in inhibiting lithium/zinc metal battery dendrites

The layered two-dimensional (2D) MXene has great promise for applications in supercapacitors, batteries, and electrocatalysis due to its large layer spacing, excellent electrical conductivity, good chemical stability, good hydrophilicity, and adjustable layer spacing. Since its discovery in 2011, MXene has been widely used to inhibit the growth of anode dendrites of lithium metal. In the past two years, researchers have used MXene and MXene based materials in the anodes of zinc metal batteries and zinc ion hybrid capacitors, respectively, and made a series of important progressive steps in the inhibition of zinc dendrite growth. In this review, we summarize the research progress of functional MXenes in inhibiting the growth of lithium and zinc metal anode dendrites, and provide a brief overview and outlook on the current challenges of MXene materials, which will help researchers to further understand the methods and their mechanisms, thus to develop novel electrochemical energy storage systems to meet the needs of rapidly developing electric vehicles and wearable/portable electronics.

Ti3O MOenes: Quantum Spin Hall Effect and Promising Semiconductors for Light-Harvesting

The continuous pursuit of novel two-dimensional (2D) materials with intriguing properties has been a driving force in advancing various scientific and technological frontiers. Here, based on a wide range of first-principles calculations, we predicted the existence of a novel family of 2D transition-metal oxides, the Ti3O MOenes (MXene-like 2D transition oxides), and determined its distinctive electronic and topological properties. A pair of 2D antiferromagnetic (AFM) Dirac points precisely located at the Fermi level in the absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is observed in the 1T-Ti3O monolayer. Moreover, upon halogenation on a bare monolayer, 1T-Ti3OCl3 and 1T-Ti3OBr3 monolayers display the quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect with nontrivial helical edge states within the gapless bulk states. Specifically, single layer 1T-Ti3OF3 behaves as an indirect semiconductor with a gap of 0.81 eV, exhibiting a strong light-harvesting capability. The indirect-gap feature can be switched to a direct one by only exerting a small tensile strain of 1.5%. These findings broaden emerging phenomena in a rich family of MOenes, suggesting a novel platform for the development of next-generation nanodevices.

Exploring the properties of Zr2CO2/GaS van der Waals heterostructures for optoelectronic applications

We investigate the structural, electronic, and optical properties of eight possible Zr2CO2/GaS van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures using first-principles calculations based on a hybrid functional. These structures display favorable stability, indicated by matching crystal structures and negative formation energies. In all considered configurations, these heterostructures act as indirect band gap semiconductors with a type-II band alignment, allowing efficient electron-hole separation. Optical studies reveal their suitability for optoelectronic applications. Zr2CO2/GaS under 4% biaxial compressive strain meets the criteria for photocatalytic water splitting, suggesting their potential for electronic and optoelectronic devices in the visible spectrum. Our findings present prospects for advanced photocatalytic materials and optical devices.

Fast Reduction of 4-Nitrophenol and Photoelectrochemical Hydrogen Production by Self-Reduced Bi/Ti3C2Tx/Bi2S3 Nanocomposite: A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Study

The distinctive properties of 2D MXenes have garnered significant interest across various fields, including wastewater treatment and photo/electro-catalysis. The integration of inexpensive semiconductor nanostructures with 2D MXenes offers a promising strategy for applications such as wastewater treatment and photoelectrochemical hydrogen production. In this study, we employed an in situ hydrothermal method to immobilize 1D Bi2S3 nanorods and self-reduced metallic bismuth nanoparticles (Bi NPs) onto Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets, resulting in the formation of a Bi/Bi2S3/Ti3C2Tx (0D/1D/2D) composite catalyst, which demonstrates an outstanding efficacy in both the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) and photoelectrochemical hydrogen production. Remarkably, a 4-NP reduction efficiency of 100% was achieved only in 4 min with a reduction rate of 1.14 min-1, which is outstanding, and it is ∼3.8 times faster than pristine Bi2S3 nanorods (0.3 min-1). Furthermore, the photoelectrochemical assessment reveals that the Bi/Bi2S3/Ti3C2Tx catalyst displays remarkable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) efficiency in an alkaline electrolyte. It exhibits a significantly lower overpotential and Tafel slope of 73 mV and 84 mV/dec, respectively, compared to pristine Bi2S3 nanorods, which are found to be 129 mV and 145 mV/dec under light illumination. The superior reduction performance of 4-NP and charge transfer mechanism is further investigated through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, alongside validation using various microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. Interestingly, the DFT analysis revealed modifications in the partial density of states of Bi2S3 within the band gap region due to the successful anchoring of Ti3C2Tx nanosheets and metallic Bi NPs, facilitating efficient charge transport and separation across the local junctions. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy provided insights into band alignment and interfacial charge transfer across the Bi/Bi2S3/Ti3C2Tx junction on a microscopic scale. This work is significant for the development of MXene-based hybrid catalysts, and it provides a deeper understanding of the reduction mechanism of organic pollutants and superior charge transport in the hybrid system for photoelectrochemical hydrogen production.

Theoretical Investigation of a Novel Two-Dimensional Non-MXene Mo3C2 as a Prospective Anode Material for Li- and Na-Ion Batteries

A new two-dimensional (2D) non-MXene transition metal carbide, Mo3C2, was found using the USPEX code. Comprehensive first-principles calculations show that the Mo3C2 monolayer exhibits thermal, dynamic, and mechanical stability, which can ensure excellent durability in practical applications. The optimized structures of Lix@(3×3)-Mo3C2 (x = 1-36) and Nax@(3×3)-Mo3C2 (x = 1-32) were identified as prospective anode materials. The metallic Mo3C2 sheet exhibits low diffusion barriers of 0.190 eV for Li and 0.118 eV for Na and low average open circuit voltages of 0.31-0.55 V for Li and 0.18-0.48 V for Na. When adsorbing two layers of adatoms, the theoretical energy capacities are 344 and 306 mA h g-1 for Li and Na, respectively, which are comparable to that of commercial graphite. Moreover, the Mo3C2 substrate can maintain structural integrity during the lithiation or sodiation process at high temperature. Considering these features, our proposed Mo3C2 slab is a potential candidate as an anode material for future Li- and Na-ion batteries.

First-Principles Studies on Transition Metal Doped Mo2B2 as Anode Material for Li-Ion Batteries

New two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal borides have attracted considerable interest in research on electrode materials for Li-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to their promising properties. In this study, 2D molybdenum boride (Mo2B2) with and without transition metal (TM, TM=Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Ru, and Pt) atom doping was investigated. Our results indicated that all TM-doped Mo2B2 samples exhibited excellent electronic conductivity, similar to the intrinsic 2D Mo2B2 metal behavior, which is highly beneficial for application in LIBs. Moreover, we found that the diffusion energy barriers of Li along paths 1 and 2 for all TM-doped Mo2B2 samples are smaller than 0.30 and 0.24 eV of the pristine Mo2B2. In particular, for 2D Co-doped Mo2B2, the diffusion energy barriers of Li along paths 1 and 2 are reduced to 0.14 and 0.11 eV, respectively, making them the lowest Li diffusion barriers in both paths 1 and 2. This indicates that TM doping can improve the electrochemical performance of 2D Mo2B2 and that Co-doped Mo2B2 is a promising electrode material for LIBs. Our work not only identifies electrode materials with promising electrochemical performance but also provides guidance for the design of high-performance electrode materials for LIBs.

Facile design of FeCu metal-organic frameworks anchored on layer Ti3C2Tx MXene for high-performance electrochemical sensing of resorcinol

This work reports the rational design of a composite material by growing FeCu-MOF-919 on the surface of layered Ti3C2Tx MXene. The introduction of Ti3C2Tx MXene simultaneously weakens the aggregation of FeCu-MOF-919 and Ti3C2Tx MXene, which increases the electrochemical reaction active site of the composite material and improves the electrochemical activity. Interestingly, the FeCu-MOF-919/Ti3C2Tx based sensors were used to detect resorcinol (RS) with a wide linear range (0.5-152.5 μM), excellent sensitivity (0.23 μA μM-1 cm-2), low limit of detection (LOD = 0.08 μM) and outstanding stability. Meanwhile, the sensor shows high repeatability of 1.07 % RSD, reproducibility of 1.47 % RSD and anti-interference performance. What's more, the sensor can be successfully used to detect RS in tap water with good recoveries (96.25-103.37 %, RSD ≤2.18 %), demonstrating that the FeCu-MOF-919/Ti3C2Tx exhibits significant potential as an advanced sensing apparatus for the surveillance of RS in the natural environment.

A Near-Infrared Photothermal-Responsive Underwater Adhesive with Tough Adhesion and Antibacterial Properties

Developing tunable underwater adhesives that possess tough adhesion in service and easy detachment when required remains challenging. Herein, a strategy is proposed to design a near infrared (NIR) photothermal-responsive underwater adhesive by incorporating MXene (Ti3C2Tx)-based nanoparticles within isocyanate-modified polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer chains. The developed adhesive exhibits long-term and tough adhesion with an underwater adhesion strength reaching 5.478 MPa. Such strong adhesion is mainly attributed to the covalent bonds and hydrogen bonds at the adhesive-substrate interface. By making use of the photothermal-response of MXene-based nanoparticles and the thermal response of PDMS-based chains, the adhesive possesses photothermal-responsive performance, exhibiting sharply diminished adhesion under NIR irradiation. Such NIR-triggered tunable adhesion allows for easy and active detachment of the adhesive when needed. Moreover, the underwater adhesive exhibits photothermal antibacterial property, making it highly desirable for underwater applications. This work enhances the understanding of photothermal-responsive underwater adhesion, enabling the design of tunable underwater adhesives for biomedical and engineering applications.

Emerging 2D Nanomaterials-Integrated Hydrogels: Advancements in Designing Theragenerative Materials for Bone Regeneration and Disease Therapy

This review highlights recent advancements in the synthesis, processing, properties, and applications of 2D-material integrated hydrogels, with a focus on their performance in bone-related applications. Various synthesis methods and types of 2D nanomaterials, including graphene, graphene oxide, transition metal dichalcogenides, black phosphorus, and MXene are discussed, along with strategies for their incorporation into hydrogel matrices. These composite hydrogels exhibit tunable mechanical properties, high surface area, strong near-infrared (NIR) photon absorption and controlled release capabilities, making them suitable for a range of regeneration and therapeutic applications. In cancer therapy, 2D-material-based hydrogels show promise for photothermal and photodynamic therapies, and drug delivery (chemotherapy). The photothermal properties of these materials enable selective tumor ablation upon NIR irradiation, while their high drug-loading capacity facilitates targeted and controlled release of chemotherapeutic agents. Additionally, 2D-materials -infused hydrogels exhibit potent antibacterial activity, making them effective against multidrug-resistant infections and disruption of biofilm generated on implant surface. Moreover, their synergistic therapy approach combines multiple treatment modalities such as photothermal, chemo, and immunotherapy to enhance therapeutic outcomes. In bio-imaging, these materials serve as versatile contrast agents and imaging probes, enabling their real-time monitoring during tumor imaging. Furthermore, in bone regeneration, most 2D-materials incorporated hydrogels promote osteogenesis and tissue regeneration, offering potential solutions for bone defects repair. Overall, the integration of 2D materials into hydrogels presents a promising platform for developing multifunctional theragenerative biomaterials.

Nitrogen-Doped Graphene-Like Carbon Intercalated MXene Heterostructure Electrodes for Enhanced Sodium- and Lithium-Ion Storage

MXene is investigated as an electrode material for different energy storage systems due to layered structures and metal-like electrical conductivity. Experimental results show MXenes possess excellent cycling performance as anode materials, especially at large current densities. However, the reversible capacity is relatively low, which is a significant barrier to meeting the demands of industrial applications. This work synthesizes N-doped graphene-like carbon (NGC) intercalated Ti3C2Tx (NGC-Ti3C2Tx) van der Waals heterostructure by an in situ method. The as-prepared NGC-Ti3C2Tx van der Waals heterostructure is employed as sodium-ion and lithium-ion battery electrodes. For sodium-ion batteries, a reversible specific capacity of 305 mAh g-1 is achieved at a specific current of 20 mA g-1, 2.3 times higher than that of Ti3C2Tx. For lithium-ion batteries, a reversible capacity of 400 mAh g-1 at a specific current of 20 mA g-1 is 1.5 times higher than that of Ti3C2Tx. Both sodium-ion and lithium-ion batteries made from NGC-Ti3C2Tx shows high cycling stability. The theoretical calculations also verify the remarkable improvement in battery capacity within the NGC-Ti3C2O2 system, attributed to the additional adsorption of working ions at the edge states of NGC. This work offers an innovative way to synthesize a new van der Waals heterostructure and provides a new route to improve the electrochemical performance significantly.

Facile Exfoliation of Few-Layer Sn-Based Nanosheets for Self-Powered Photo-Electrochemical and All-Optical Modulation Applications

Few-layer tin (Sn)-based nanosheets (NSs) with a thickness of ≈2.5 nm are successfully prepared using a modified liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) method. Here the first exploration of photo-electrochemical (PEC) and nonlinear properties of Sn NSs is presented. The results demonstrate that the PEC properties are tunable under different experimental conditions. Additionally, Sn NSs are shown to exhibit a unique self-powered PEC performance, maintaining a good long-term stability for up to 1 month. Using electron spin resonance, active species, such as hydroxyl radicals (·OH), superoxide radicals (·O2 -), and holes (h+), are detected during operations, providing a deeper understanding of the working mechanism. Furthermore, measurements of nonlinear response reveal that Sn NSs can be effective for all-optical modulation, as it enables the realization of all-optical switching through excitation spatial cross-phase modulation (SXPM). These findings present new research insights and potential applications of Sn NSs in optoelectronics.

Alkali cation stabilization of defects in 2D MXenes at ambient and elevated temperatures

Transition metal carbides have been adopted in energy storage, conversion, and extreme environment applications. Advancements in their 2D counterparts, known as MXenes, enable the design of unique structures at the ~1 nm thickness scale. Alkali cations have been essential in MXenes manufacturing processing, storage, and applications, however, exact interactions of these cations with MXenes are not fully understood. In this study, using Ti3C2Tx, Mo2TiC2Tx, and Mo2Ti2C3Tx MXenes, we present how transition metal vacancy sites are occupied by alkali cations, and their effect on MXene structure stabilization to control MXene's phase transition. We examine this behavior using in situ high-temperature x-ray diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy, ex situ techniques such as atomic-layer resolution secondary ion mass spectrometry, and density functional theory simulations. In MXenes, this represents an advance in fundamentals of cation interactions on their 2D basal planes for MXenes stabilization and applications. Broadly, this study demonstrates a potential new tool for ideal phase-property relationships of ceramics at the atomic scale.
