Photocatalytic Hybrid Semiconductor-Metal Nanoparticles; from Synergistic Properties to Emerging Applications

Single walled carbon nanotubes covalently functionalized by a ruthenium complex for photocatalytic oxidations

The covalent bonding of a ruthenium bipyridine complex derivative with the aromatic network of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) through a stepwise protocol is presented, thus yielding the sample SWNT-Ru. To do that, an-amino decorated phenanthroline is bonded to the nanotube by means of the diazonium chemistry protocol, providing anchoring points for discrete organometallic units as depicted by the solid characterization techniques employed. The hybrid material, able to emit upon excitation, is active in the visible light-driven photocatalytic oxidation of organic sulfides to sulfoxides. SWNT-Ru presents a wide scope being able to convert more than 10 substrates with different characteristics, including added-value chemicals, with a stable performance over more than 6 cycles without metal leaching and enhanced activity compared to related homogeneous complexes. A versatile character is also demonstrated since this hybrid catalyst follows both possible photooxidation mechanisms.

NC Meets CN: Porous Photoanodes with Polymeric Carbon Nitride/ZnSe Nanocrystal Heterojunctions for Photoelectrochemical Applications

The utilization of photoelectrochemical cells (PEC) for converting solar energy into fuels (e.g., hydrogen) is a promising method for sustainable energy generation. We demonstrate a strategy to enhance the performance of PEC devices by integrating surface-functionalized zinc selenide (ZnSe) semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) into porous polymeric carbon nitride (CN) matrices to form a uniformly distributed blend of NCs within the CN layer via electrophoretic deposition (EPD). The achieved type II heterojunction at the CN/NC interface exhibits intimate contact between the NCs and the CN backbone since it does not contain insulating binders. This configuration promotes efficient charge separation and suppresses carrier recombination. The reported CN/NC composite structure serves as a photoanode, demonstrating a photocurrent density of 160 ± 8 μA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), 75% higher compared with a CN-based photoelectrode, for approximately 12 h. Spectral and photoelectrochemical analyses reveal extended photoresponse, reduced charge recombination, and successful charge transfer at the formed heterojunction; these properties result in enhanced PEC oxygen production activity with a Faradaic efficiency of 87%. The methodology allows the integration of high-quality colloidal NCs within porous CN-based photoelectrodes and provides numerous knobs for tuning the functionality of the composite systems, thus showing promise for achieving enhanced solar fuel production using PEC.

Polylactic acid electrospun membrane loaded with cerium nitrogen co-doped titanium dioxide for visible light-triggered antibacterial photocatalytic therapy

Wound infection caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria poses a serious threat to antibiotic therapy. Therefore, it is of vital importance to find new methods and modes for antibacterial therapy. The cerium nitrogen co-doped titanium dioxide nanoparticles (N-TiO2, 0.05Ce-N-TiO2, 0.1Ce-N-TiO2, and 0.2Ce-N-TiO2) were synthesized using the hydrothermal method in this study. Subsequently, electrospinning was employed to fabricate polylactic acid (PLA) electrospun membranes loaded with the above-mentioned nanoparticles (PLA-N, PLA-0.05, PLA-0.1, and PLA-0.2). The results indicated that cerium and nitrogen co-doping tetrabutyl titanate enhanced the visible light photocatalytic efficiency of TiO2 nanoparticles and enabled the conversion of ultraviolet light into harmless visible light. The photocatalytic reaction under visible light irradiation induced the generation of ROS, which could effectively inhibit the bacterial growth. The antibacterial assay showed that it was effective in eliminating S. aureus and E. coli and the survival rates of two types of bacteria under 30 min of irradiation were significantly below 20% in the PLA-0.2 experimental group. Moreover, the bactericidal membranes also have excellent biocompatibility performance. This bio-friendly and biodegradable membrane may be applied to skin trauma and infection in future to curb drug-resistant bacteria and provide more alternative options for antimicrobial therapy.

Seeing is believing: Correlating optoelectronic functionality with atomic scale imaging of single semiconductor nanocrystals

A unique on-chip method for the direct correlation of optical properties, with atomic-scale chemical-structural characteristics for a single quantum dot (QD), is developed and utilized in various examples. This is based on performing single QD optical characterization on a modified glass substrate, followed by the extraction of the relevant region of interest by focused-ion-beam-scanning electron microscope processing into a lamella for high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) characterization with atomic scale resolution. The direct correlation of the optical response under an electric field with STEM analysis of the same particle allows addressing several single particle phenomena: first, the direct correlation of single QD photoluminescence (PL) polarization and its response to the external field with the QD crystal lattice alignment, so far inferred indirectly; second, the identification of unique yet rare few-QD assemblies, correlated directly with their special spectroscopic optical characteristics, serving as a guide for future designed assemblies; and third, the study on the effect of metal island growth on the PL behavior of hybrid semiconductor-metal nanoparticles, with relevance for their possible functionality in photocatalysis. This work, therefore, establishes the use of the direct on-chip optical-structural correlation method for numerous scenarios and timely questions in the field of QD research.

Photo-Responsive Ascorbic Acid-Modified Ag2S-ZnS Heteronanostructure Dropping pH to Trigger Synergistic Antibacterial and Bohr Effects for Accelerating Infected Wound Healing

Nonantibiotic approaches must be developed to kill pathogenic bacteria and ensure that clinicians have a means to treat wounds that are infected by multidrug-resistant bacteria. This study prepared matchstick-like Ag2S-ZnS heteronanostructures (HNSs). Their hydrophobic surfactants were then replaced with hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and thioglycolic acid (TGA) through the ligand exchange method, and this was followed by ascorbic acid (AA) conjugation with TGA through esterification, yielding well-dispersed PEGylated Ag2S-ZnS@TGA-AA HNSs. The ZnS component of the HNSs has innate semiconductivity, enabling the generation of electron-hole pairs upon irradiation with a light of wavelength 320 nm. These separate charges can react with oxygen and water around the HNSs to produce reactive oxygen species. Moreover, some holes can oxidize the surface-grafted AA to produce protons, decreasing the local pH and resulting in the corrosion of Ag2S, which releases silver ions. In evaluation tests, the PEGylated Ag2S-ZnS@TGA-AA had synergistic antibacterial ability and inhibited Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Additionally, MRSA-infected wounds treated with a single dose of PEGylated Ag2S-ZnS@TGA-AA HNSs under light exposure healed significantly more quickly than those not treated, a result attributable to the HNSs' excellent antibacterial and Bohr effects.

2D MOF based-heterostructure with hierarchical architecture as antibacterial wound dressing

Bacterial infections pose a huge threat to human health due to the inevitable emergency of drug resistance. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) consisting of metal ions and organic linkers, as emerging efficient antibacterial material, have the merits of structural flexibility and adjustable physicochemical property. With assistance of photosensitive agents as organic linkers, MOFs have great potential in antibacterial application through photocatalytic therapy by the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, the limited light use efficiency and short lifespan of ROS are two obstacles for their applications. Inspired by the semiconductor heterostructure in photocatalysis, we rationally design and precisely synthesize MOFs based heterostructures, in which the TiO2 nanoclusters are filled into the pores of Cu-TCPP nanosheets (i.e. TiO2 NCs@Cu-TCPP HSs). And the composite materials possess three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical architectures, which have advantages of large surface area, excellent light-absorbing ability and photocatalytic efficiency. Significantly, this novel material displays >99.99 % antibacterial efficiency against E. coli and S. aureus within 30 min and preserves the excellent antibacterial ability during reusing three times, which is superior to recently reported photocatalystic-based antibacterial materials. Our study provides new insights into the energy band engineering for enhanced antibacterial performance, paving a way for designing advanced clinical wound dressings.

Synergistic antibacterial mechanism of silver-copper bimetallic nanoparticles

The excessive use of antibiotics in clinical settings has resulted in the rapid expansion, evolution, and development of bacterial and microorganism resistance. It causes a significant challenge to the medical community. Therefore, it is important to develop new antibacterial materials that could replace traditional antibiotics. With the advancements in nanotechnology, it has become evident that metallic and metal oxide nanoparticles (MeO NPs) exhibit stronger antibacterial properties than their bulk and micron-sized counterparts. The antibacterial properties of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) have been extensively studied, including the release of metal ions, oxidative stress responses, damages to cell integrity, and immunostimulatory effects. However, it is crucial to consider the potential cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of Ag NPs and Cu NPs. Numerous experimental studies have demonstrated that bimetallic nanoparticles (BNPs) composed of Ag NPs and Cu NPs exhibit strong antibacterial effects while maintaining low cytotoxicity. Bimetallic nanoparticles offer an effective means to mitigate the genotoxicity associated with individual nanoparticles while considerably enhancing their antibacterial efficacy. In this paper, we presented on various synthesis methods for Ag-Cu NPs, emphasizing their synergistic effects, processes of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, photocatalytic properties, antibacterial mechanisms, and the factors influencing their performance. These materials have the potential to enhance efficacy, reduce toxicity, and find broader applications in combating antibiotic resistance while promoting public health.

In the View of Electrons Transfer and Energy Conversion: The Antimicrobial Activity and Cytotoxicity of Metal-Based Nanomaterials and Their Applications

The global pandemic and excessive use of antibiotics have raised concerns about environmental health, and efforts are being made to develop alternative bactericidal agents for disinfection. Metal-based nanomaterials and their derivatives have emerged as promising candidates for antibacterial agents due to their broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, environmental friendliness, and excellent biocompatibility. However, the reported antibacterial mechanisms of these materials are complex and lack a comprehensive understanding from a coherent perspective. To address this issue, a new perspective is proposed in this review to demonstrate the toxic mechanisms and antibacterial activities of metal-based nanomaterials in terms of energy conversion and electron transfer. First, the antimicrobial mechanisms of different metal-based nanomaterials are discussed, and advanced research progresses are summarized. Then, the biological intelligence applications of these materials, such as biomedical implants, stimuli-responsive electronic devices, and biological monitoring, are concluded based on trappable electrical signals from electron transfer. Finally, current improvement strategies, future challenges, and possible resolutions are outlined to provide new insights into understanding the antimicrobial behaviors of metal-based materials and offer valuable inspiration and instructional suggestions for building future intelligent environmental health.

Photocatalytic Antimicrobials: Principles, Design Strategies, and Applications

Nowadays, the increasing emergence of antibiotic-resistant pathogenic microorganisms requires the search for alternative methods that do not cause drug resistance. Phototherapy strategies (PTs) based on the photoresponsive materials have become a new trend in the inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms due to their spatiotemporal controllability and negligible side effects. Among those phototherapy strategies, photocatalytic antimicrobial therapy (PCAT) has emerged as an effective and promising antimicrobial strategy in recent years. In the process of photocatalytic treatment, photocatalytic materials are excited by different wavelengths of lights to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) or other toxic species for the killing of various pathogenic microbes, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, and algae. Therefore, this review timely summarizes the latest progress in the PCAT field, with emphasis on the development of various photocatalytic antimicrobials (PCAMs), the underlying antimicrobial mechanisms, the design strategies, and the multiple practical antimicrobial applications in local infections therapy, personal protective equipment, water purification, antimicrobial coatings, wound dressings, food safety, antibacterial textiles, and air purification. Meanwhile, we also present the challenges and perspectives of widespread practical implementation of PCAT as antimicrobial therapeutics. We hope that as a result of this review, PCAT will flourish and become an effective weapon against pathogenic microorganisms and antibiotic resistance.

Lateral charge migration in 1D semiconductor-metal hybrid photocatalytic systems

Colloidal nanorods based on CdS or CdSe, functionalized with metal particles, have proven to be efficient catalysts for light-driven hydrogen evolution. Seeded CdSe@CdS nanorods have shown increasing performance with increasing rod length. This observation was rationalized by the increasing lifetime of the separated charges, as a large distance between holes localized in the CdSe seed and electrons localized at the metal tip decreases their recombination rate. However, the impact of nanorod length on the electron-to-tip localization efficiency or pathway remained an open question. Therefore, we investigated the photo-induced electron transfer to the metal in a series of Ni-tipped CdSe@CdS nanorods with varying length. We find that the transfer processes occurring from the region close to the semiconductor-metal interface, the rod region, and the CdSe seed region depend in different ways on the rods' length. The rate of the fastest process from excitonic states generated directly at the interface is independent of the rod length, but the relative amplitude decreases with increasing rod length, as the weight of the interface region is decreasing. The transfer of electrons to the metal tip from excitons generated in the CdS rod region depends strongly on the length of the nanorods, which indicates an electron transport-limited process, i.e., electron diffusion toward the interface region, followed by fast interface crossing. The transfer originating from the CdSe excitonic states again shows no significant length dependence in its time constant, as it is probably limited by the rate of overcoming the shallow confinement in the CdSe seed.

Recent advances in stimuli-responsive nano-heterojunctions for tumor therapy

Stimuli-responsive catalytic therapy based on nano-catalysts has attracted much attention in the field of biomedicine for tumor therapy, due to its excellent and unique properties. However, the complex tumor microenvironment conditions and the rapid charge recombination in the catalyst limit catalytic therapy's effectiveness and further development. Effective heterojunction nanomaterials are constructed to address these problems to improve catalytic performance. Specifically, on the one hand, the band gap of the material is adjusted through the heterojunction structure to promote the charge separation efficiency under exogenous stimulation and further improve the catalytic capacity. On the other hand, the construction of a heterojunction structure can not only preserve the function of the original catalyst but also achieve significantly enhanced synergistic therapy ability. This review summarized the construction and functions of stimuli-responsive heterojunction nanomaterials under the excitation of X-rays, visible-near infrared light, and ultrasound in recent years, and further introduces their application in cancer therapy. Hopefully, the summary of stimuli-responsive heterojunction nanomaterials' applications will help researchers promote the development of nanomaterials in cancer therapy.

UV-Visible photo-reactivity of permanently polarized inorganic nanotubes coupled to gold nanoparticles

Hybrid aluminosilicate nanotubes (Imo-CH₃) have the ability to trap small organic molecules inside their hydrophobic internal cavity while being dispersed in water owing to their hydrophilic external surface. They also display a curvature-induced polarization of their wall, which favors reduction outside the nanotubes and oxidation inside. Here, we coupled bare plasmonic gold nanoparticles (GNPs) with Imo-CH₃ and analyzed for the first time the redox reactivity of these hybrid nano-reactors upon UV illumination. We show that the coupling between GNPs and Imo-CH₃ significantly enhances the nanotube photocatalytic activity, with a large part of water reduction occurring directly on the gold surface. The coupling mechanism strongly influences the initial H₂ production rate, which can go from ×10 to more than ×90 as compared to bare Imo-CH₃ depending on the synthesis route of the GNPs. The present results show that this hybrid photocatalytic nano-reactor benefits from a synergy of polarization and confinement effects that facilitate efficient H₂ production.

Rich Landscape of Colloidal Semiconductor-Metal Hybrid Nanostructures: Synthesis, Synergetic Characteristics, and Emerging Applications

Nanochemistry provides powerful synthetic tools allowing one to combine different materials on a single nanostructure, thus unfolding numerous possibilities to tailor their properties toward diverse functionalities. Herein, we review the progress in the field of semiconductor-metal hybrid nanoparticles (HNPs) focusing on metal-chalcogenides-metal combined systems. The fundamental principles of their synthesis are discussed, leading to a myriad of possible hybrid architectures including Janus zero-dimensional quantum dot-based systems and anisotropic quasi 1D nanorods and quasi-2D platelets. The properties of HNPs are described with particular focus on emergent synergetic characteristics. Of these, the light-induced charge-separation effect across the semiconductor-metal nanojunction is of particular interest as a basis for the utilization of HNPs in photocatalytic applications. The extensive studies on the charge-separation behavior and its dependence on the HNPs structural characteristics, environmental and chemical conditions, and light excitation regime are surveyed. Combining the advanced synthetic control with the charge-separation effect has led to demonstration of various applications of HNPs in different fields. A particular promise lies in their functionality as photocatalysts for a variety of uses, including solar-to-fuel conversion, as a new type of photoinitiator for photopolymerization and 3D printing, and in novel chemical and biomedical uses.

Air-Stable Radical Organic Cages as Cascade Nanozymes for Enhanced Catalysis

The pursuit of single-assembled molecular cage reactors for complex tandem reactions is a long-standing target in biomimetic catalysis but still a grand challenge. Herein, nanozyme-like organic cages are reported by engineering air-stable radicals into the skeleton upon photoinduced electron transfer. The generation of radicals is accompanied by single-crystal structural transformation and exhibits superior stability over six months in air. Impressively, the radicals throughout the cage skeleton can mimic the peroxidase of natural enzymes to decompose H₂ O₂ into OH· and facilitate oxidation reactions. Furthermore, an integrated catalyst by encapsulating Au clusters (glucose oxidase mimics) into the cage has been developed, in which the dual active sites (Au cluster and radical) are spatially isolated and can work as cascade nanozymes to prominently promote the enzyme-like tandem reaction via a substrate channeling effect.

Ag/Ag2O with NIR-Triggered Antibacterial Activities: Photocatalytic Sterilization Enhanced by Low-Temperature Photothermal Effect

Purpose

A synergistic antibacterial system employing photocatalytic performance and low-temperature photothermal effect (LT-PTT) with the potential for infectious skin wound healing promotion was developed.

Methods

Ag/Ag₂O was synthesized with a two-step method, and its physicochemical properties were characterized. After its photocatalytic performance and photothermal effect were evaluated under 0.5 W/cm² 808 nm NIR laser irradiation, its antibacterial activities in both planktonic and biofilm forms were then studied in vitro targeting Staphylococcus Aureus (S. aureus), and the biocompatibility was tested with L-929 cell lines afterward. Finally, the animal model of dorsal skin wound infection was established on Sprague-Dawley rats and was used to assess infectious wound healing promotion of Ag/Ag₂O in vivo.

Results

Ag/Ag₂O showed boosted photocatalytic performance and local temperature accumulation compared with Ag₂O when exposed to 0.5 W/cm² 808 nm NIR irradiation, which therefore endowed Ag/Ag₂O with the ability to kill pathogens rapidly and cleavage bacterial biofilm in vitro. Furthermore, after treatment with Ag/Ag₂O and 0.5 W/cm² 808 nm NIR irradiation, infectious wounds of rats realized skin tissue regeneration from a histochemical level.

Conclusion

By exhibiting excellent NIR-triggered photocatalytic sterilization ability enhanced by low-temperature photothermal effect, Ag/Ag₂O was promising to be a novel, photo-responsive antibacterial agent.

Plasmonic Metal Mediated Charge Transfer in Stacked Core-Shell Semiconductor Heterojunction for Significantly Enhanced CO2 Photoreduction

Construction of core-shell semiconductor heterojunctions and plasmonic metal/semiconductor heterostructures represents two promising routes to improved light harvesting and promoted charge separation, but their photocatalytic activities are respectively limited by sluggish consumption of charge carriers confined in the cores, and contradictory migration directions of plasmon-induced hot electrons and semiconductor-generated electrons. Herein, a semiconductor/metal/semiconductor stacked core-shell design is demonstrated to overcome these limitations and significantly boost the photoactivity in CO₂  reduction. In this smart design, sandwiched Au serves as a "stone", which "kills two birds" by inducing localized surface plasmon resonance for hot electron generation and mediating unidirectional transmission of conduction band electrons and hot electrons from TiO₂  core to MoS₂  shell. Meanwhile, upward band bending of TiO₂  drives core-to-shell migration of holes through TiO₂ -MoS₂  interface. The co-existence of TiO₂  → Au → MoS₂  electron flow and TiO₂  → MoS₂  hole flow contributes to spatial charge separation on different locations of MoS₂  outer layer for overall redox reactions. Additionally, reduction potential of photoelectrons participating in the CO₂  reduction is elaborately adjusted by tuning the thickness of MoS₂  shell, and thus the product selectivity is delicately regulated. This work provides fresh hints for rationally controlling the charge transfer pathways toward high-efficiency CO₂  photoreduction.

Coordination unsaturation of vanadium nitride quantum dots boosts low-temperature aerobic oxidation of thiophenic sulfides

Aerobic oxidative desulfurization (AODS) promises a sustainable alternative technology for diesel desulfurization, which necessitates the efficient aerobic oxidation of thiophenic sulfides under mild conditions to minimize energy input, yet being longstandingly plagued by the grand challenge in low-temperature activation of triplet oxygen. Here we synthesize vanadium nitride quantum dots on graphene to controllably create coordination-unsaturated edge/corner V sites for boosting the AODS reaction. The catalyst activates the reaction at 70 °C, and is two orders of magnitude more active than the best V-based catalysts. We demonstrate through computational studies that the low-coordinated edge/corner V sites can effectively activate oxygen and adsorb sulfides to lower the activation barrier, dramatically enhancing the activity. The catalyst achieves deep AODS of real diesel at 80 °C with negligible attenuation in successive reuses, which highlights its attractive industrial potential. These findings provide scientific and practical insights to develop high-performance catalysts for a sustainable AODS process.

Classification, Synthetic, and Characterization Approaches to Nanoparticles, and Their Applications in Various Fields of Nanotechnology: A Review

Nanoparticles typically have dimensions of less than 100 nm. Scientists around the world have recently become interested in nanotechnology because of its potential applications in a wide range of fields, including catalysis, gas sensing, renewable energy, electronics, medicine, diagnostics, medication delivery, cosmetics, the construction industry, and the food industry. The sizes and forms of nanoparticles (NPs) are the primary determinants of their properties. Nanoparticles’ unique characteristics may be explored for use in electronics (transistors, LEDs, reusable catalysts), energy (oil recovery), medicine (imaging, tumor detection, drug administration), and more. For the aforementioned applications, the synthesis of nanoparticles with an appropriate size, structure, monodispersity, and morphology is essential. New procedures have been developed in nanotechnology that are safe for the environment and can be used to reliably create nanoparticles and nanomaterials. This research aims to illustrate top-down and bottom-up strategies for nanomaterial production, and numerous characterization methodologies, nanoparticle features, and sector-specific applications of nanotechnology.

Prokaryotic and eukaryotic toxicity of halloysite decorated with photoactive nanoparticles

The development of new approaches to treat the growing antibiotic resistance of pathogenic bacterial species is an important task to ensure the future safety of society. Utilization of irradiation of different wavelengths together with nanostructured materials based on metal containing nanoparticles may result in synergetic antibacterial effects. In this paper we aim to show the main conceptions of light-assisted bacteria deactivation techniques and prospects of application of natural clay nanotubes as a carrier for scalable photoactive antibacterial nanomaterials. Halloysite aluminosilicate nanotubes (ca 50 nm diameter, ca. 1.0 μm length) are safe and biocompatible natural materials produced in tons. Their application as a template or a carrier for metal nanoparticles, QDs and organic compounds has already found application in biomedical research, cosmetics, polymers, coatings, catalysis and related applications. Here, we show the toxicity of halloysite decorated with photoactive nanoparticles on prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. The formation of light active nanostructured materials with this clay as the base is a promising tool for solving the problem of the antibiotic resistance of microorganisms.

Efficient Prevention of Aspergillus flavus Spores Spread in Air Using Plasmonic Ag-AgCl/α-Fe2O3 under Visible Light Irradiation

Aspergillus flavus is a kind of widespread fungi that can produce carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic secondary metabolites known as aflatoxins. Aspergillus flavus mainly spread through the means of fungal spores in air, thus preventing the spores spread is an effective strategy to control aflatoxins contamination from source. Herein, a rapid and efficient control way to prevent the spread of Aspergillus flavus spores in air was demonstrated. Ag-AgCl nanoparticles were combined with tetrahedral α-Fe₂O₃ to form plasmonic composites that presented 93.65 ± 1.53% prevention rate of Aspergillus flavus spores under 50 min visible light irradiation. The efficient activity was attributed to the synergy effect of Ag including intrinsic disinfection, electron sink, and localized surface plasmon resonance effect, which were proven by photoelectric characterization, density functional theory, and finite difference time domain methods. The calculated work functions of α-Fe₂O₃, Ag, and AgCl were 3.71, 4.52, and 5.38 eV, respectively, which could accelerate photoinduced carrier transfer through Ag during photoreaction. Moreover, it was found that the intrinsic disinfection of Ag and hydroxyl radical from photocatalytic reaction were the main factors to the prevention of Aspergillus flavus spores, which resulted in the destruction of spore structure and the leakage of intracellular protein with 62.15 ± 2.63 μg mL^-1. Most important, it was proven that the composites also showed high activity (90.52 ± 1.26%) to prevent Aspergillus flavus spore spread in the storage process of peanuts. These findings not only provided useful information for an efficient and potential strategy to prevent Aspergillus flavus contamination but also could be as a reference in toxic fungi control.

Aerobic Photobiocatalysis Enabled by Combining Core-Shell Nanophotoreactors and Native Enzymes

Biocatalysis has become a powerful tool in synthetic chemistry, where enzymes are used to produce highly selective products under mild conditions. Using photocatalytically regenerated cofactors in synergistic combination with enzymes in a cascade fashion offers an efficient synthetic route to produce specific compounds. However, the combination of enzymes and photocatalysts has been limited due to the rapid degradation of the biomaterials by photogenerated reactive oxygen species, which denature and deactivate the enzymatic material. Here, we design core-shell structured porous nano-photoreactors for highly stable and recyclable photobiocatalysis under aerobic conditions. The enzymatic cofactor NAD⁺ from NADH can be efficiently regenerated by the photoactive organosilica core, while photogenerated active oxygen species are trapped and deactivated through the non-photoactive shell, protecting the enzymatic material. The versatility of these photocatalytic core-shell nanoreactors was demonstrated in tandem with two different enzymatic systems, glycerol dehydrogenase and glucose 1-dehydrogenase, where long-term enzyme stability was observed for the core-shell photocatalytic system.

Light-Harvesting Novel Hierarchical Porous Cu9S5-MnWO4 Hybrid Structures in Photocatalytic Oxidative Homocoupling of Alkynes and Amines

The discovery of light-harvesting materials for use in photocatalytic organic reactions has recently attracted attention, indicating the potential for utilizing renewable energy sources. A hybrid semiconductor (SC)-SC structure, Cu₉S₅-MnWO₄, was synthesized using a simple, efficient method. The novel hierarchical porous Cu₉S₅-MnWO₄ hybrid structures were then applied in the photocatalysis of oxidative homocoupling of alkynes and amines. The design of a heterogeneous catalyst based on a porous, SC-SC hybrid structure and low-cost Cu should generate interest in the fabrication and modification of photocatalysts for a wide range of applications.

Visible-NIR light-responsive 0D/2D CQDs/Sb2WO6 nanosheets with enhanced photocatalytic degradation performance of RhB: Unveiling the dual roles of CQDs and mechanism study

Environmental pollution caused by dye wastewater discharge has attracted much attention in the past decades. Developing photocatalysts with high solar energy utilization efficiency for the treatment of dye wastewater is one of the most promising methods to address afore-mentioned environmental problem. Herein, novel Vis-NIR (visible to near-infrared) light-responsive carbon quantum dots modified Sb₂WO₆ (CQDs/Sb₂WO₆) nanosheets with remarkably enhanced photocatalytic degradation performance of Rhodamine B (RhB) aqueous solution were successfully synthesized. Under the irradiation of Vis light, the photocatalytic degradation efficiency reaches 83% over the optimal composite, which is nearly seven times higher than that of pristine Sb₂WO₆. Meanwhile, under NIR light irradiation, the optimal composite also keeps a stable degradation performance, while pristine Sb₂WO₆ exhibits sluggish performance. Besides, a detailed photocatalytic degradation pathway was proposed via the analyses of corresponding intermediates in the photocatalytic degradation process. On the basis of electron spin resonance spectrometry, quenching experiment and density functional theory (DFT) calculation, hydroxyl radicals (•OH) play a dominating role in the photocatalytic reactions and a possible photocatalytic degradation mechanism was unearthed. This work provides new insights for constructing novel Vis-NIR responsive photocatalysts to purify dye wastewater for environmental remediation.

Flow synthesis of photocatalytic semiconductor-metal hybrid nanocrystals

Semiconductor-metal hybrid nanostructures are promising materials for photocatalytic applications, providing high efficiencies compared to their composing counterparts. So far, the synthesis of such hybrid nanoparticles was limited to batch reactors, achieving tunability while demonstrating how each of the nanocrystals' characteristics affects photocatalytic performances. Yet, new methodologies should be established to increase the synthetic yield while maintaining high control over the resulting structures. Herein, scalable advanced flow techniques are introduced, yielding ZnSe-metal hybrid nanoparticles either in a thermal growth or photo-induced growth regime. Firstly, thermal gold growth in the flow reactor is achieved with good control over the metal tip size and the nanoparticle morphology. We address the dependence of the reaction on temperature, the precursor to nanorod molar ratios, and additional parameters. Additionally, light-induced growth by the flow reactor is demonstrated for platinum clusters. The quality of the resulting hybrids is directly demonstrated by their functionality in photocatalytic hydrogen generation by water reduction, displaying enhanced activity compared to bare ZnSe nanorods. The fairly straightforward adaptation of such powerful flow-reaction techniques to scale-up photocatalytic hybrid nanoparticle syntheses takes them one step forwards towards the realization of their potential in real-life application scenarios.

Sulfide Ligands in Hybrid Semiconductor-Metal Nanocrystal Photocatalysts: Improved Hole Extraction and Altered Catalysis

Hybrid semiconductor-metal nanocrystals manifest efficient photocatalytic activity related to the metal domain promoting charge carrier separation and providing an active catalytic site. The surface properties of such nanoparticles are also of paramount importance in determining their photocatalytic activity. Addressing the combination of surface effects in catalysis on metals, with the electronic properties of hybrid nanoparticles, we examined the effect of coating CdS-Au hybrid nanoparticles with sulfide, an anion that is expected to bind strongly to both domains, on the photocatalytic functionality. Upon sulfide coating, one-electron processes - namely the oxidative production of hydroxyl radicals and the reductive production of superoxide - were increased, whereas the activity for two-electron reduction processes - H₂ and hydrogen peroxide generation - was hampered. These findings indicate a double-edged sword effect for sulfide coating that on one side relieves the hole extraction bottleneck from the semiconductor segment and, on the other hand, poisons the metal domain restricting its reductive capacity for the two-electron processes requiring a chemisorption step on the metal surface. The work further demonstrates the importance of surface properties for the photocatalytic action of such hybrid nanoparticle systems.

Recent Advances in Plasmonic Photocatalysis Based on TiO2 and Noble Metal Nanoparticles for Energy Conversion, Environmental Remediation, and Organic Synthesis

Plasmonic photocatalysis has emerged as a prominent and growing field. It enables the efficient use of sunlight as an abundant and renewable energy source to drive a myriad of chemical reactions. For instance, plasmonic photocatalysis in materials comprising TiO₂ and plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) enables effective charge carrier separation and the tuning of optical response to longer wavelength regions (visible and near infrared). In fact, TiO₂ -based materials and plasmonic effects are at the forefront of heterogeneous photocatalysis, having applications in energy conversion, production of liquid fuels, wastewater treatment, nitrogen fixation, and organic synthesis. This review aims to comprehensively summarize the fundamentals and to provide the guidelines for future work in the field of TiO₂ -based plasmonic photocatalysis comprising the above-mentioned applications. The concepts and state-of-the-art description of important parameters including the formation of Schottky junctions, hot electron generation and transfer, near field electromagnetic enhancement, plasmon resonance energy transfer, scattering, and photothermal heating effects have been covered in this review. Synthetic approaches and the effect of various physicochemical parameters in plasmon-mediated TiO₂ -based materials on performances are discussed. It is envisioned that this review may inspire and provide insights into the rational development of the next generation of TiO₂ -based plasmonic photocatalysts with target performances and enhanced selectivities.

Peroxymonosulfate Activation by Bi2WO6/BiOCl Heterojunction Nanocomposites under Visible Light for Bisphenol A Degradation

The combination of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and photocatalysis has proven to be effective for organic contaminants treatment. However, the construction of an efficient catalytic material is an important challenge. Herein, novel Bi₂WO₆/BiOCl heterojunction nanocomposites were successfully designed and fabricated using a facile and effective strategy for bisphenol A (BPA) photodegradation with PMS activation. The well-designed heterojunction with improvement of the contact area and interface microstructure was obtained through in situ growth of the Bi₂WO₆ on the surface of BiOCl. The Bi₂WO₆/BiOCl nanocomposites exhibit excellent catalytic performance in PMS activation for BPA degradation under visible light irradiation. A possible photocatalytic reaction mechanism was systematically revealed. The excellent catalytic performance is mainly attributed to the strong interaction between Bi₂WO₆ and BiOCl, resulting in an enhanced photoabsorption and a more efficient interfacial charge separation and transfer. This paper provides a novel strategy to design efficient catalytic materials for organic contaminants remediation with PMS activation.

Elucidating the formation and active state of Cu co-catalysts for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

The design of active and selective co-catalysts constitutes one of the major challenges in developing heterogeneous photocatalysts for energy conversion applications. This work provides a comprehensive insight into thermally induced bottom-up generation and transformation of a series of promising Cu-based co-catalysts. We demonstrate that the volcano-type HER profile as a function of calcination temperature is independent of the type of the Cu precursor but is affected by changes in oxidation state and location of the copper species. Supported by DFT modeling, our data suggest that low temperature (<200 °C) treatments facilitate electronic communication between the Cu species and TiO2, which allows for a more efficient charge utilization and maximum HER rates. In contrast, higher temperatures (>200 °C) do not affect the Cu oxidation state, but induce a gradual, temperature-dependent surface-to-bulk diffusion of Cu, which results in interstitial, tetra-coordinated Cu+ species. The disappearance of Cu from the surface and the introduction of new defect states is associated with a drop in HER performance. This work examines electronic and structural effects that are in control of the photocatalytic activity and can be transferred to other systems for further advancing photocatalysis.

Gold nanoplasmonic particles in tunable porous silicon 3D scaffolds for ultra-low concentration detection by SERS

A composite material of plasmonic nanoparticles embedded in a scaffold of nano-porous silicon offers unmatched capabilities for use as a SERS substrate. The marriage of these components presents an exclusive combination of tightly focused amplification of Localised Surface Plasmon (LSP) fields inside the material with an extremely high surface-to-volume ratio. This provides favourable conditions for a single molecule or extremely low concentration detection by SERS. In this work the advantage of the composite is demonstrated by SERS detection of Methylene Blue at a concentration as low as a few picomolars. We systematically investigate the plasmonic properties of the material by imaging its morphology, establishing its composition and the effect on the LSP resonance optical spectra.

Tunable Quantum Photoinitiators for Radical Photopolymerization

This review describes the use of nanocrystal-based photocatalysts as quantum photoinitiators, including semiconductor nanocrystals (e.g., metal oxides, metal sulfides, quantum dots), carbon dots, graphene-based nanohybrids, plasmonic nanocomposites with organic photoinitiators, and tunable upconverting nanocomposites. The optoelectronic properties, cross-linking behavior, and mechanism of action of quantum photoinitiators are considered. The challenges and prospects associated with the use of quantum photoinitiators for processes such as radical polymerization, reversible deactivation radical polymerization, and photoinduced atom transfer radical polymerization are reviewed. Due to their unique capabilities, we forsee a growing role for quantum photoinitiators over the coming years.

Nanofibrous Photocatalytic Membranes Based on Tailored Anisotropic Gold/Ceria Nanoparticles

The combination of plasmonic nanoparticles with semiconductor photocatalysts is a good strategy for synthesizing highly efficient photocatalysts. Such binary nanoparticles have demonstrated enhanced catalytic activity in comparison to either plasmonic catalysts or semiconductor catalysts. However, problematic recovery and limited long-term colloidal stability of those nanoparticles in suspension limit their wide use in catalysis. To palliate to such limitations, we embedded binary nanoparticles in polymer fibers to design photocatalytic membranes. First, we used the selective over-growth of crystalline cerium oxide on the gold nanoparticle template with distinct shapes. Gold nanospheres, gold nanorods, and gold nanotriangles were used as the template for the growth of the cerium oxide domains. Then, the resulting nanoparticles were used to catalyze model reactions in suspensions. The gold nanoparticles covered with patches of cerium oxide outperformed the fully covered and naked nanoparticles in terms of catalytic efficiency. Finally, the most efficient binary nanostructures were successfully embedded in nanofibrous membranes by colloidal electrospinning and used in water remediation experiments in a flow-through reactor.

Light-Mediated Polymerization Induced by Semiconducting Nanomaterials: State-of-the-Art and Future Perspectives

Direct capture of solar energy for chemical transformation via photocatalysis proves to be a cost-effective and energy-saving approach to construct organic compounds. With the recent growth in photosynthesis, photopolymerization has been established as a robust strategy for the production of specialty polymers with complex structures, precise molecular weight, and narrow dispersity. A key challenge in photopolymerization is the scarcity of effective photomediators (photoinitiators, photocatalysts, etc.) that can provide polymerization with high yield and well-defined polymer products. Current efforts on developing photomediators have mainly focused on organic dyes and metal complexes. On the other hand, nanomaterials (NMs), particularly semiconducting nanomaterials (SNMs), are suitable candidates for photochemical reactions due to their unique optical and electrical properties, such as high absorption coefficients, large charge diffusion lengths, and broad absorption spectra. This review provides a comprehensive insight into SNMs' photomediated polymerizations and highlights the roles SNMs play in photopolymerizations, types of polymerizations, applications in producing advanced materials, and the future directions.

Pyroelectric Catalysis-Based "Nano-Lymphatic" Reduces Tumor Interstitial Pressure for Enhanced Penetration and Hydrodynamic Therapy

Because of the deficiency of lymphatic reflux in the tumor, the retention of tumor interstitial fluid causes aggravation of the tumor interstitial pressure (TIP), which leads to unsatisfactory tumor penetration of nanomedicine. It is the main inducement of tumor recurrence and metastasis. Herein, we design a pyroelectric catalysis-based "Nano-lymphatic" to decrease the TIP for enhanced tumor penetration and treatments. It realizes photothermal therapy and decomposition of tumor interstitial fluid under NIR-II laser irradiation after reaching the tumor, which reduces the TIP for enhanced tumor penetration. Simultaneously, reactive oxygen species generated during the pyroelectric catalysis can further damage deep tumor stem cells. The results indicate that the "Nano-lymphatic" relieves 52% of TIP, leading to enhanced tumor penetration, which effectively inhibits the tumor proliferation (93.75%) and recurrence. Our finding presents a rational strategy to reduce TIP by pyroelectric catalysis for enhanced tumor penetration and improved treatments, which is of great significance for drug delivery.

Transition metal oxide and chalcogenide-based nanomaterials for antibacterial activities: an overview

A new battle line is drawn where antibiotic misuse and mismanagement have made treatment of bacterial infection a thorny issue. It is highly desirable to develop active antibacterial materials for bacterial control and destruction without drug resistance. A large amount of effort has been devoted to transition metal oxide and chalcogenide (TMO&C) nanomaterials as possible candidates owing to their unconventional physiochemical, electronic and optical properties and feasibility of functional architecture assembly. This review expounds multiple TMO&C-based strategies to combat pathogens, opening up new possibilities for the design of simple, yet highly effective systems that are crucial for antimicrobial treatment. A special emphasis is placed on the multiple mechanisms of these nanoagents, including mechanical rupture, photocatalytic/photothermal activity, Fenton-type reaction, nanozyme-assisted effect, released metal ions and the synergistic action of TMO&C in combination with other antibacterial agents. The applications of TMO&C nanomaterials mostly in air/water purification and wound healing along with their bactericidal activities and mechanisms are also described. Finally, the contemporary challenges and trends in the development of TMO&C-based antibacterial strategies are proposed.

Surface defects induced charge imbalance for boosting charge separation and solar-driven photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Low charge separation efficiency of semiconductor materials is the main obstacle for high-performance photocatalyst. Herein, we report surface defects engineered uniform mesoporous TiO₂ nanospheres (DMTNSs) through surfactant-mediated self-assembly solvothermal approach combined with hydrogenation strategy to promote charge separation. The surface defects induced charge imbalance result in the formation of built-in field, which can promote photogenerated charge separation efficiently and be confirmed by experimental and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Under AM 1.5G irradiation, the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution of DMTNSs is ~3.34 mmol h^-1 g^-1, almost 3.5 times higher than that of pristine non-defective TiO₂ nanospheres (0.97 mmol h^-1 g^-1), due to the engineered surface defects narrowing the bandgap (~3.01 eV) and inducing charge imbalance to boost spatial charge separation and extend visible-light response. The defect induced charge imbalance strategy opens a new valuable perspective for fabricating other high-efficient oxide photocatalysts.

Single-Atom-Based Heterojunction Coupling with Ion-Exchange Reaction for Sensitive Photoelectrochemical Immunoassay

Benefiting from the maximum atom-utilization efficiency and distinct structural features, single-atom catalysts open a new avenue for the design of more functional catalysts, whereas their bioapplications are still in their infancy. Due to the advantages, platinum single atoms supported by cadmium sulfide nanorods (Pt SAs-CdS) are synthesized to build an ultrasensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensing platform. With the decoration of Pt SAs, the PEC signal of CdS is significantly boosted. Furthermore, theory calculations indicate the positively charged Pt SAs could change the charge distribution and increase the excited carrier density of CdS. Meanwhile, it also suggests that Cu²⁺ can severely hinder the photoexcitation and electron-hole separation of CdS. As a proof of concept, prostate-specific antigen is chosen as the target analyte to demonstrate the superiority of the Pt SAs-CdS-based PEC sensing system. As a result, the PEC biosensor based on Pt SAs-CdS exhibits outstanding detection sensitivity and promising applicability.

Design of Metal@Titanium Oxide Nano-heterodimers by Laser-Driven Photodeposition: Growth Mechanism and Modeling

In order to circumvent the usual nucleation of randomly distributed tiny metallic dots photodeposited on TiO₂ nanoparticles (NPs) induced by conventional UV lamps, we propose to synthesize well-controlled nanoheterodimers (NHDs) using lasers focused inside microfluidic reactors to strongly photoactivate redox reactions of active ions flowing along with nanoparticles in water solution. Since the flux of photons issued from a focused laser may be orders of magnitude higher than that reachable with classical lamps, the production of electron-hole pairs is tremendously increased, ensuring a large availability of carriers for the deposition and favoring the growth of a single metallic dot as compared to secondary nucleation events. We show that the growth of single silver or gold nanodots can be controlled by varying the beam intensity, the concentration of the metallic salt, and the flow velocity inside the microreactor. The confrontation to a build-in model of the metallic nanodot light-induced growth onto the surface of TiO₂ NPs shows the emergence of a predictable "master behavior" on which individual growths obtained from various tested conditions do collapse. We also characterized the associated quantum yield. Eventually, we successfully confronted our model to growth data from the literature in the case of silver on TiO₂ and gold on II-VI semiconducting NPs triggered by UV lamps. It shows that for the photosynthesis of NHDs the efficiency of the electron-hole pair production rate matters much more than the number of pairs produced and that the use of laser light can provide a photodeposition-based synthesis at the nanoscale.

Quantum Photoinitiators: Toward Emerging Photocuring Applications

Semiconductor nanocrystals are promising photocatalysts for a wide range of applications, ranging from alternative fuel generation to biomedical and environmental applications. This stems from their diverse properties, including flexible spectral tunability, stability, and photocatalytic efficiencies. Their functionality depends on the complex influence of multiple parameters, including their composition, dimensions, architecture, surface coating, and environmental conditions. A particularly promising direction for rapid adoption of these nanoparticles as photocatalysts is their ability to act as photoinitiators (PIs) for radical polymerization. Previous studies served to demonstrate the proof of concept for the use of quantum confined semiconductor nanocrystals as photoinitiators, coining the term Quantum PIs, and provided insights for their photocatalytic mechanism of action. However, these early reports suffered from low efficiencies while requiring purging with inert gases, use of additives, and irradiation by high light intensities with very long excitation durations, which limited their potential for real-life applications. The progress in nanocrystal syntheses and surface engineering has opened the way to the introduction of the next generation of Quantum PIs. Herein, we introduce the research area of nanocrystal photocatalysts, review their studies as Quantum PIs for radical polymerization, from suspension polymerization to novel printing, as well as in a new family of polymerization techniques, of reversible deactivation radical polymerization, and provide a forward-looking view for the challenges and prospects of this field.

Shining light on transition metal sulfides: New choices as highly efficient antibacterial agents

Globally, millions of people die of microbial infection-related diseases every year. The more terrible situation is that due to the overuse of antibiotics, especially in developing countries, people are struggling to fight with the bacteria variation. The emergence of super-bacteria will be an intractable environmental and health hazard in the future unless novel bactericidal weapons are mounted. Consequently, it is critical to develop viable antibacterial approaches to sustain the prosperous development of human society. Recent researches indicate that transition metal sulfides (TMSs) represent prominent bactericidal application potential owing to the meritorious antibacterial performance, acceptable biocompatibility, high solar energy utilization efficiency, and excellent photo-to-thermal conversion characteristics, and thus, a comprehensive review on the recent advances in this area would be beneficial for the future development. In this review article, we start with the antibacterial mechanisms of TMSs to provide a preliminary understanding. Thereafter, the state-of-the-art research progresses on the strategies for TMSs materials engineering so as to promote their antibacterial properties are systematically surveyed and summarized, followed by a summary of the practical application scenarios of TMSs-based antibacterial platforms. Finally, based on the thorough survey and analysis, we emphasize the challenges and future development trends in this area.

Photocatalytic Advanced Oxidation Processes for Water Treatment: Recent Advances and Perspective

Nowadays, an ever-increasing variety of organic contaminants in water has caused hazards to the ecological environment and human health. Many of them are persistent and non-biodegradable. Various techniques have been studied for sewage treatment, including biological, physical and chemical methods. Photocatalytic advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have received increasing attention due to their fast reaction rates and strong oxidation capability, low cost compared with the non-photolytic AOPs. This review is dedicated to summarizing up-to-date research progress in photocatalytic AOPs, such as Fenton or Fenton-like reaction, ozonation and sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes. Mechanisms and activation processes are discussed. Then, the paper summarizes photocatalytic materials and modification strategies, including defect chemistry, morphology control, heterostructure design, noble metal deposition. The future perspectives and challenges are also discussed.

A Ternary Dumbbell Structure with Spatially Separated Catalytic Sites for Photocatalytic Overall Water Splitting

Solar-driven overall water splitting based on metal sulfide semiconductor photocatalysts remains as a challenge owing to the strong charge recombination and deficient catalytic active sites. Additionally, significant inhibition of back reactions, especially the oxidation of sulfide ions during the photocatalytic water oxidation catalysis, is an arduous task that requires an efficient photogenerated hole transfer dynamics. Here, a ternary dumbbell-shaped catalyst based on RuO2/CdS/MoS2 with spatially separated catalytic sites is developed to achieve simultaneous production of hydrogen and oxygen under simulated solar-light without any sacrificial agents. Particularly, MoS2 nanosheets anchored on the two ends of CdS nanowires are identified as a reduction cocatalyst to accelerate hydrogen evolution, while RuO2 nanoparticles as an oxidation cocatalyst are deposited onto the sidewalls of CdS nanowires to facilitate oxygen evolution kinetics. The density functional theory simulations and ultrafast spectroscopic results reveal that photogenerated electrons and holes directionally migrate to MoS2 and RuO2 catalytic sites, respectively, thus achieving efficient charge carrier separation. The design of ternary dumbbell structure guarantees metal sulfides against photocorrosion and thus extends their range in solar water splitting.

Cu2 MoS4 /Au Heterostructures with Enhanced Catalase-Like Activity and Photoconversion Efficiency for Primary/Metastatic Tumors Eradication by Phototherapy-Induced Immunotherapy

Photoimmunotherapy can not only effectively ablate the primary tumor but also trigger strong antitumor immune responses against metastatic tumors by inducing immunogenic cell death. Herein, Cu₂ MoS₄ (CMS)/Au heterostructures are constructed by depositing plasmonic Au nanoparticles onto CMS nanosheets, which exhibit enhanced absorption in near-infrared (NIR) region due to the newly formed mid-gap state across the Fermi level based on the hybridization between Au 5d orbitals and S 3p orbitals, thus resulting in more excellent photothermal therapy and photodynamic therapy (PDT) effect than single CMS upon NIR laser irradiation. The CMS and CMS/Au can also serve as catalase to effectively relieve tumor hypoxia, which can enhance the therapeutic effect of O₂ -dependent PDT. Notably, the NIR laser-irradiated CMS/Au can elicit strong immune responses via promoting dendritic cells maturation, cytokine secretion, and activating antitumor effector T-cell responses for both primary and metastatic tumors eradication. Moreover, CMS/Au exhibits outstanding photoacoustic and computed tomography imaging performance owing to its excellent photothermal conversion and X-ray attenuation ability. Overall, the work provides an imaging-guided and phototherapy-induced immunotherapy based on constructing CMS/Au heterostructures for effectively tumor ablation and cancer metastasis inhibition.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Generation by Optimized Plasmonic Hot Electron Injection in Structure-Adjustable Au-ZnO Hybrids

Plasmonic Au-ZnO hybrids with adjustable structures (including Au-decorated ZnO and core–shell Au@ZnO with dense and porous ZnO shells) and the optimized hot electron-driven photocatalytic activity were successfully prepared. It was found that the Au@ZnO core–shell hybrids with porous morphology had the highest plasmon-enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen generation activity under visible light irradiation. The wavelength-dependent photocatalytic tests verified that Au@ZnO with porous ZnO shells had the highest apparent quantum efficiency upon resonance excitation. The ultrafast transient absorption measurements revealed that Au@ZnO with porous ZnO shells had the fastest plasmon-induced hot electron injection, which was thought to be the reason for the improved photocatalytic activity. This work might provide a promising route to designing photocatalytic and photoelectric materials.

Self-Assembled and Self-Monitored Sorafenib/Indocyanine Green Nanodrug with Synergistic Antitumor Activity Mediated by Hyperthermia and Reactive Oxygen Species-Induced Apoptosis

Liver cancer is a leading cause of cancer morbidity and mortality worldwide, especially in China. Sorafenib (SRF) is currently the most commonly used systemic agent against advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which is the most common type of liver cancer. However, HCC patients have only limited benefit and suffer a serious side effect from SRF. Therefore, new approaches are urgently needed to improve the therapeutic effectiveness of SRF and reduce its side effect. In our current study, we developed a self-imaging and self-delivered nanodrug with SRF and indocyanine (ICG) to improve the therapeutic effect of sorafenib against HCC. With the π-π stacking effect between SRF and ICG, a one-step nanoprecipitation method was designed to obtain the SRF/ICG nanoparticles (SINP) via self-assembly. Pluronic F127 was used to shield the SINP to further improve the stability in an aqueous environment. The stability, photothermal effect, cell uptake, ROS production, cytotoxicity, tumor imaging, and tumor-targeting and tumor-killing efficacy of the SINP were evaluated in vitro and in vivo by using an HCC cell line Huh7 and its xenograft tumor model. We found that our designed SINP showed monodisperse stability and efficient photothermal effect both in vitro and in vivo. SINP could rapidly enter Huh7 cells and achieve potent cytotoxicity under near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation partly by producing a great amount of reactive oxygen species (ROS). SINP had significantly improved stability and blood half-life, and could specifically target tumor via the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect in vivo. In addition, SINP showed improved cytotoxicity in both subcutaneous and orthotopic HCC implantation models in vivo. Overall, this rationally designed sorafenib delivery system with a very high loading capacity (33%) has considerably improved antitumor efficiency in vitro and could completely eliminate subcutaneous tumors without any regrowth in vivo. In conclusion, our self-imaging and self-delivered nanodrug could improve the efficacy of SRF and might be a potential therapy for HCC patients.

Enhanced photoconversion performance of NdVO4/Au nanocrystals for photothermal/photoacoustic imaging guided and near infrared light-triggered anticancer phototherapy

Although neodymium vanadate (NdVO₄) has been investigated and applied in some fields owing to its intensive ultraviolet (UV) light absorption, weak absorption in visible (Vis) and near infrared (NIR) regions constrains its environmental remediation and biomedical applications. Herein, plasmonic precious metal Au as light trapping agent is deposited onto NdVO₄ to form metal/semiconductor hybrid nanostructure for improving the Vis/NIR light absorption. NdVO₄/Au heterojunction nanocrystals (NCs) were synthesized by NdVO₄ nanorods (NRs) and plasmonic Au nanoparticles (NPs), followed by introducing polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) to enhance stability and biocompatibility, which exhibit elevated photocatalytic performance for organic dye degradation, photothermal conversion effect as high as 32.15% and cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) production ability. NdVO₄/Au can be internalized efficiently via endocytosis and cause apparent phototoxicity on HeLa cells. In vivo experiments further show that NdVO₄/Au can act as a high-efficiency NIR light-triggered anticancer agent with excellent tumor inhibition effect. In addition, based on outstanding light-to-heat conversion performance and thermal expansion effect under NIR irradiation, NdVO₄/Au provides photothermal (PT) and photoacoustic (PA) dual-modal imaging platform for precise cancer diagnosis and treatment. STATEMENTS OF SIGNIFICANCE: It's the first report on integrating precious metal Au and rare earth orthovanadates semiconductor into NdVO₄/Au heterojunction NCs. The as-prepared NdVO₄/Au heterojunction NCs exhibits improved absorption in Vis/NIR region and increased generation efficiency of photo-induced electron/hole pairs due to the LSPR effect, which results in enhanced photothermal conversion efficiency and the production ability of cytotoxic O₂^- and OH in comparison with pristine NdVO₄. For further clinical application, NdVO₄/Au heterojunction NCs could be served as anticancer therapeutic agent for PA/PT dual-modal imaging guided and NIR-triggered photothermal/photodynamic synergistic anticancer treatment.

The role of gold oxidation state in the synthesis of Au-CsPbX3 heterostructure or lead-free Cs2AuIAuIIIX6 perovskite nanoparticles

Here, we report that the oxidation state of gold plays a dominant role in determining the reaction products when gold halide salts are mixed with all-inorganic lead halide perovskite nanocrystals. When CsPbX₃ nanocrystals react with Au(i) halide salts, Au nanoparticles are deposited on the surface of the perovskites through the reduction of Au¹⁺ ions by the surfactant ligand shell, to produce Au-CsPbX₃ heterostructures. These heterostructures preserve comparably high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and show identical XRD diffractograms as the parent CsPbX₃ nanocrystals. In contrast, the reaction of CsPbX₃ nanocrystals with Au(iii) halide salts promotes complete cation exchange of Pb ions by Au ions in the nanocrystal perovskite lattice. The cation exchange products, Cs₂Au^IAu^IIIBr₆ or Cs₂Au^IAu^IIICl₆, show XRD patterns corresponding to a tetragonal mixed halide perovskite crystal structure and show no visible photoluminescence. This crucial dependence on the oxidation state of the Au ion informs synthetic strategies for producing and optimizing metal-perovskite heterostructures and lead-free perovskite nanoparticles.
