Design of Active Interfaces Using Responsive Molecular Components

Facile and Nondestructive Transformation of Intrinsic Hydrophobic Behavior of a Carbon Nanotubes Sheet to Hydrophilic

It is imperative to induce hydrophilicity in intrinsically hydrophobic carbon nanotubes (CNTs) without losing their superior properties for applications that specifically deal with aqueous media. A method for transforming a CNTs sheet from hydrophobic to hydrophilic by treatment with N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) is explored. The NMP-treated CNT sheets are assessed based on complementing characterization, and it is concluded that the binding of NMP to a CNTs surface is through noncovalent interaction without the incorporation of defects in CNTs. The induced hydrophilicity in the CNTs sheet is stable for water exposure over a longer duration while it displays a semireversible nature upon heat treatment. The mechanical and electrical properties of the NMP-treated CNTs sheet revealed enhancement in the tensile strength from 221 to 421 MPa while maintaining a good electrical conductivity of ∼1.22 × 104 S/m because of the improved interfacial properties. The hydrophilic CNTs exhibited excellent adsorption capacity for methylene blue dye. The NMP-treated CNTs sheets demonstrated their suitability in flexible hybrid supercapacitor (FHSC) devices with improved electrochemical performance with enhancement in the capacitance from 5.4 to 7.6 F/g and a decrease in the equivalent series resistance from 53 to 34 Ω compared to pristine CNTs-based devices. These solid-state FHSC devices displayed excellent cyclic charge-discharge performance along with robust behavior over thousands of bending cycles without significant performance degradation. The excellent dye removal capability and superior electrochemical performance of the NMP-treated CNTs sheet is a consequence of their improved interface with aqueous media, which is governed by the hydrophilic nature of the CNTs sheet.

Advancing piezoelectric 2D nanomaterials for applications in drug delivery systems and therapeutic approaches

Precision drug delivery and multimodal synergistic therapy are crucial in treating diverse ailments, such as cancer, tissue damage, and degenerative diseases. Electrodes that emit electric pulses have proven effective in enhancing molecule release and permeability in drug delivery systems. Moreover, the physiological electrical microenvironment plays a vital role in regulating biological functions and triggering action potentials in neural and muscular tissues. Due to their unique noncentrosymmetric structures, many 2D materials exhibit outstanding piezoelectric performance, generating positive and negative charges under mechanical forces. This ability facilitates precise drug targeting and ensures high stimulus responsiveness, thereby controlling cellular destinies. Additionally, the abundant active sites within piezoelectric 2D materials facilitate efficient catalysis through piezochemical coupling, offering multimodal synergistic therapeutic strategies. However, the full potential of piezoelectric 2D nanomaterials in drug delivery system design remains underexplored due to research gaps. In this context, the current applications of piezoelectric 2D materials in disease management are summarized in this review, and the development of drug delivery systems influenced by these materials is forecast.

Rational Design of Stimuli-Responsive Inorganic 2D Materials via Molecular Engineering: Toward Molecule-Programmable Nanoelectronics

The ability of electronic devices to act as switches makes digital information processing possible. Succeeding graphene, emerging inorganic 2D materials (i2DMs) have been identified as alternative 2D materials to harbor a variety of active molecular components to move the current silicon-based semiconductor technology forward to a post-Moore era focused on molecule-based information processing components. In this regard, i2DMs benefits are not only for their prominent physiochemical properties (e.g., the existence of bandgap), but also for their high surface-to-volume ratio rich in reactive sites. Nonetheless, since this field is still in an early stage, having knowledge of both i) the different strategies for molecularly functionalizing the current library of i2DMs, and ii) the different types of active molecular components is a sine qua non condition for a rational design of stimuli-responsive i2DMs capable of performing logical operations at the molecular level. Consequently, this Review provides a comprehensive tutorial for covalently anchoring ad hoc molecular components-as active units triggered by different external inputs-onto pivotal i2DMs to assess their role in the expanding field of molecule-programmable nanoelectronics for electrically monitoring bistable molecular switches. Limitations, challenges, and future perspectives of this emerging field which crosses materials chemistry with computation are critically discussed.

Multi-responsive Electropolymer Surface Coatings Based on Azo Molecular Switches and Carbazoles: Light, pH, and Electrochemical Control of Z→E Isomerization in Thin Films

Light-responsive surfaces are attracting increasing interest, not least because their physicochemical properties can be selectively and temporally controlled by a non-invasive stimulus. Most existing immobilization strategies involve the chemical attachment of light-responsive moieties to the surface, although this approach often suffers from a low surface concentration of active species or a high inhomogeneity of applied coatings. Herein, electropolymerization of carbazoles as a facile and rapid approach for preparing light-responsive azo-based surface coatings is presented. The electrochemical oxidative polymerization of bis-carbazole containing azo-monomers yields stable films, in which the photochemical properties and specific pH sensitivity of azo molecular switches are retained. Moreover, the molecular design enables electrocatalytic control over Z→E azo double bond isomerization facilitated by the conductive polycarbazole backbone. Ultimately, the high degree of control over macromolecular properties yields conductive surface coatings responsive to a range of stimuli, showing great promise as a strategy for versatile application in organic electronics.

Arylazopyrazole-Modified Thiolactone Acrylate Copolymer Brushes for Tuneable and Photoresponsive Wettability of Glass Surfaces

Photoswitches have long been employed in coatings for surfaces and substrates to harness light as a versatile stimulus to induce responsive behavior. We previously demonstrated the viability of arylazopyrazole (AAP) as a photoswitch in self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on silicon and glass surfaces for photoresponsive wetting applications. We now aim to transfer the excellent photophysical properties of AAPs to polymer brush coatings. Compared to SAMs, polymer brushes offer enhanced stability and an increase of the thickness and density of the functional organic layer. In this work, we present thiolactone acrylate copolymer brushes which can be post-modified with AAP amines as well as hydrophobic acrylates, making use of the unique chemistry of the thiolactones. This strategy enables photoresponsive wetting with a tuneable range of contact angle change on glass substrates. We show the successful synthesis of thiolactone hydroxyethyl acrylate copolymer brushes by means of surface-initiated atom-transfer radical polymerization with the option to either prepare homogeneous brushes or to prepare micrometer-sized brush patterns by microcontact printing. The polymer brushes were analyzed by atomic force microscopy, time-of-flight secondary ion spectrometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Photoresponsive behavior imparted to the brushes by means of post-modification with AAP is monitored by UV/vis spectroscopy, and wetting behavior of homogeneous brushes is measured by static and dynamic contact angle measurements. The brushes show an average change in static contact angle of around 13° between E and Z isomer of the AAP photoswitch for at least five cycles, while the range of contact angle change can be fine-tuned between 53.5°/66.5° (E/Z) and 81.5°/94.8° (E/Z) by post-modification with hydrophobic acrylates.

Light-Responsive Conductive Surface Coatings on the Basis of Azidomethyl-PEDOT Electropolymer Films

The design of responsive coatings has gained increasing attention recently, with light-responsive interfaces receiving particular appreciation, as their surface properties can be modulated with excellent spatiotemporal control. In this article, we present light-responsive conductive coatings acquired through a copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction between electropolymerized azide-functionalized poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT-N₃) and arylazopyrazole (AAP)-bearing alkynes. The UV/vis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data indicate a successful post-modification, supporting a covalent attachment of AAP moieties to PEDOT-N₃. The thickness and degree of PEDOT-N₃ modification are accessible by varying the amount of passed charge during electropolymerization and time of reaction, respectively, providing a degree of synthetic control over the physicochemical material properties. The produced substrates demonstrate a reversible and stable light-driven switching of photochromic properties in both "dry" and swelled states, as well as efficient electrocatalytic Z → E switching. The AAP-modified polymer substrates exhibit a light-controlled wetting behavior, demonstrating a consistently reversible switching of the static water contact angle with a difference up to 10.0° for CF₃-AAP@PEDOT-N₃. The results highlight the application of conducting PEDOT-N₃ for the covalent immobilization of molecular switches while preserving their stimuli-responsive features.

Versatile Surface Patterning with Low Molecular Weight Photoswitches

Surface patterning of functional materials is a key technology in various fields such as microelectronics, optics, and photonics. In micro- and nanofabrication, polymers are frequently employed either as photoreactive or thermoresponsive resists that enable further fabrication steps, or as functional adlayers in electronic and optical devices. In this article, a method is presented for imprint lithography using low molecular weight arylazoisoxazoles photoswitches instead of polymer resists. These photoswitches exhibit a rapid and reversible solid-to-liquid phase transition upon photo-isomerization at room temperature, making them highly suitable for reversible surface functionalization at ambient conditions. Beyond photo-induced imprint lithography with multiple write-and-erase cycles, prospective applications as patterned matrix for nanoparticles and etch resist on gold surfaces are demonstrated.

Enhanced photo-reactivity of polyanthracene in the VIS region

The wavelength-dependent photo-reactivity of polyanthracene was explored upon UV-C and VIS light irradiation. The material was prepared via one-pot chemical oxidation route using FeCl₃ as oxidizing agent. A decrease in surface hydrophobicity of a polyanthracene-coated poly(methylmethacrylate) substrate from 109.11° to 60.82° was observed upon UV-C exposure for 48 hrs which was attributed to increase in oxygen content at the surface, as validated by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Upon exposure to ultraviolet-visible LEDs, photo-dimerization of polyanthracene in solution occurred and was monitored using UV-VIS spectroscopy. The photo-dimer product formation decreased from 381 nm to 468 nm and was found to be higher for the polyanthracene material compared to the monomer anthracene. At 381 nm, photo-dimerization of the material was found to be approx. 4x more efficient than the non-substituted monomer counterpart. Results obtained show that photo-dimerization of polyanthracene will proceed upon exposure with visible light LEDs with reduction in efficiency at longer wavelengths. To compensate, irradiation power of the light source and irradiation time were increased.

Switchable Adhesion: On-Demand Bonding and Debonding

Adhesives have a long and illustrious history throughout human history. The development of synthetic polymers has highly improved adhesions in terms of their strength and environmental tolerance. As soft robotics, flexible electronics, and intelligent gadgets become more prevalent, adhesives with changeable adhesion capabilities will become more necessary. These adhesives should be programmable and switchable, with the ability to respond to light, electromagnetic fields, thermal, and other stimuli. These requirements necessitate novel concepts in adhesion engineering and material science. Considerable studies have been carried out to develop a wide range of adhesives. This review focuses on stimuli-responsive material-based adhesives, outlining current research on switchable and controlled adhesives, including design and manufacturing techniques. Finally, the potential for smart adhesives in applications, and the development of future adhesive forms are critically suggested.

Acid-catalysed liquid-to-solid transitioning of arylazoisoxazole photoswitches

Molecular photoswitches play a vital role in the development of responsive materials. These molecular building blocks are particularly attractive when multiple stimuli can be combined to bring about physical changes, sometimes leading to unexpected properties and functions. The arylazoisoxazole molecular switch was recently shown to be capable of efficient photoreversible solid-to-liquid phase transitions with application in photoswitchable surface adhesion. Here, we show that the arylazoisoxazole forms thermally stable and photoisomerisable protonated Z- and E-isomers in an apolar aprotic solvent when the pK a of the applied acid is sufficiently low. The tuning of isomerisation kinetics from days to seconds by the pK a of the acid not only opens up new reactivity in solution, but also the solid-state photoswitching of azoisoxazoles can be efficiently reversed with selected acid vapours, enabling acid-gated photoswitchable surface adhesion.

Multiresponsive 2D Ti3C2Tx MXene via Implanting Molecular Properties

The design and fabrication of active nanomaterials exhibiting multifunctional properties is a must in the so-called global "Fourth Industrial Revolution". In this sense, molecular engineering is a powerful tool to implant original capabilities on a macroscopic scale. Herein, different bioinspired 2D-MXenes have been developed via a versatile and straightforward synthetic approach. As a proof of concept, Ti₃C₂T_x MXene has been exploited as a highly sensitive transducing platform for the covalent assembly of active biomolecular architectures (i.e., amino acids). All pivotal properties originated from the anchored targets were proved to be successfully transferred to the resulting bioinspired 2D-MXenes. Appealing applications have been devised for these 2D-MXene prototypes showing (i) chiroptical activity, (ii) fluorescence capabilities, (iii) supramolecular π-π interactions, and (iv) stimuli-responsive molecular switchability. Overall, this work demonstrates the fabrication of programmable 2D-MXenes, taking advantage of the inherent characteristics of the implanted (bio)molecular components. Thus, the current bottleneck in the field of 2D-MXenes can be overcome after the significant findings reported here.

Topological Radiated Dendrites Featuring Persistent Bactericidal Activity for Daily Personal Protection

Many substances in nature show radiated topological structure and possess excellent bio-adhesion ability. Herein, regulating the topological structure of Zn₂ GeO₄ :Mn persistent phosphors is achieved with a molecular coordination method. The morphology of the Zn₂ GeO₄ :Mn phosphors is well-tuned from nanorods to radiated dendrites by changing the coordination capability of the surface ligand. Due to the structural matching and multivalent interactions, Zn₂ GeO₄ :Mn radiated dendrites show strong adhesion affinity toward organisms. Moreover, the porous radiated structure offers Zn₂ GeO₄ :Mn with a large surface area for photocatalysis. Efficient bacterial adhesion and good long persistent photocatalysis activity are observed in the Zn₂ GeO₄ :Mn radiated dendrites, which endows Zn₂ GeO₄ :Mn with persistent antibacterial activity even in the dark. Further, the Zn₂ GeO₄ :Mn spike flowers loaded fabrics exhibit potent persistent antibacterial properties. Mask and towel fabricated with the antibacterial fabrics can inhibit bacterial growth effectively and no bacteria are observed to pass through the antibacterial mask, suggesting that antibacterial mask can guarantee our health and can be utilized repeatedly. The developed Zn₂ GeO₄ :Mn dendrites possess ideal ability in long-term bacterial inhibition, making them valuable in the fields of medical protection and food packaging.

Bistable (Supra)molecular Switches on 3D-Printed Responsive Interfaces with Electrical Readout

Molecular switching memories have gained great importance in recent years because of the current sharp increase in the production of consumer electronics. Herein, 3D-printed nanocomposite carbon electrodes (3D-nCEs) have been explored as unconventional responsive interfaces to electrically readout bistable molecular switches via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy as the output system. As a proof-of-concept, two different 3D-printed responsive interfaces have been devised using surface engineering for covalently anchoring (supra)molecular components that well-define two electrical states (on/off) driven by either electrical or optical stimuli. Accordingly, this work paves the way for the functionalization of 3D-nCEs through fundamental chemistry, opening up new horizons in unprecedented tailored 3D-printed responsive interfaces which could be utilized as potential (bio)sensors, (opto)electronic devices, or molecular logic gates.

How the Shape and Chemistry of Molecular Penetrants Control Responsive Hydrogel Permeability

The permeability of hydrogels for the selective transport of molecular penetrants (drugs, toxins, reactants, etc.) is a central property in the design of soft functional materials, for instance in biomedical, pharmaceutical, and nanocatalysis applications. However, the permeation of dense and hydrated polymer membranes is a complex multifaceted molecular-level phenomenon, and our understanding of the underlying physicochemical principles is still very limited. Here, we uncover the molecular principles of permeability and selectivity in hydrogel permeation. We combine the solution-diffusion model for permeability with comprehensive atomistic simulations of molecules of various shapes and polarities in a responsive hydrogel in different hydration states. We find in particular that dense collapsed states are extremely selective, owing to a delicate balance between the partitioning and diffusivity of the penetrants. These properties are sensitively tuned by the penetrant size, shape, and chemistry, leading to vast cancellation effects, which nontrivially contribute to the permeability. The gained insights enable us to formulate semiempirical rules to quantify and extrapolate the permeability categorized by classes of molecules. They can be used as approximate guiding ("rule-of-thumb") principles to optimize penetrant or membrane physicochemical properties for a desired permeability and membrane functionality.

Rapid Photoswitching of Low Molecular Weight Arylazoisoxazole Adhesives

Adhesion is one of the most ubiquitous practical applications at surfaces. With today's society calling increasingly for more reusable and "green" alternatives, the demand for readily reversible adhesives has triggered many studies into this field, in particular by incorporating molecular photoswitches into composite materials. Responsive polymers can act as reversible adhesives, but their employment brings about synthetic drawbacks and challenges in reproducibility and reusability. Here, our results demonstrate that even a low molecular weight photoswitch can serve as an on-demand adhesive when the intermolecular interactions are sufficiently strong. We show that readily accessible arylazoisoxazoles display a fast photoreversible solid-to-liquid phase transition and perform as excellent photoreversible adhesives, with a remarkable durability over 10 immediate reuse cycles without a loss in adhesive strength or an increase in the unprecedented response time. Furthermore, the versatility of photoreversible adhesion is shown at various surfaces ranging from polymeric materials to metals, demonstrating a wide field of potential application.
