Ultrahigh-Flux X-ray Detection by a Solution-Grown Perovskite CsPbBr3 Single-Crystal Semiconductor Detector

Solvent-tuned perovskite heterostructures enable visual linoleic acid assay and edible oil species discrimination via wavelength shift

Linoleic acid (LA) detection and edible oils discrimination are essential for food safety. Recently, CsPbBr3@SiO2 heterostructures have been widely applied in edible oil assays, while deep insights into solvent effects on their structure and performance are often overlooked. Based on the suitable polarity and viscosity of cyclohexane, we prepared CsPbBr3@SiO2 Janus nanoparticles (JNPs) with high stability in edible oil and fast halogen-exchange (FHE) efficiency with oleylammonium iodide (OLAI). LA is selectively oxidized by lipoxidase to yield hydroxylated derivative (oxLA) capable of reacting with OLAI, thereby bridging LA content to naked-eye fluorescence color changes through the anti-FHE reaction. The established method for LA in edible oils exhibited consistent results with GC-MS analysis (p > 0.05). Since the LA content difference between edible oils, we further utilized chemometrics to accurately distinguish (100%) the species of edible oils. Overall, such elaborated CsPbBr3@SiO2 JNPs enable a refreshing strategy for edible oil discrimination.

Lead-Free Bismuth-Based Perovskite X-ray Detector with High Sensitivity and Low Detection Limit

Bismuth-based halide perovskites have shown great potential for direct X-ray detection, attributable to their nontoxicity and advantages in detection sensitivity and spatial resolution. However, the practical application of such materials still faces the critical challenge of combining both high sensitivity and low detection limits. Here, we report a new type of zero-dimensional (0D) perovskite (HIS)BiI5 (1, where HIS2+ = histamine) with high sensitivity and a low detection limit. Structurally, the strong N-H···I hydrogen bonds between HIS2+ cations and inorganic frameworks enhance the rigidity of the structure and diminish the intermolecular distance between adjacent inorganic [Bi2I10]4- dimers. By virtue of such structural merits, single crystal 1 exhibits excellent physical properties perpendicular to both the (001) and (010) faces. Perpendicular to the (010) face, 1 exhibited a high electrical resistivity (2.31 × 1011 Ω cm) and a large carrier mobility-lifetime product (μτ) (2.81 × 10-4 cm2 V-1) under X-ray illumination. Benefiting from these superior physical properties, it demonstrates an excellent X-ray detection capability with a sensitivity of approximately 103 μC Gyair-1 cm-2 and a detection limit of 36 nGyair s-1 in both directions perpendicular to the (001) and (010) crystal faces. These results provide a promising candidate material for the development of new, lead-free, high-performance X-ray detectors.

Interlamellar-Spacing Engineering of Stable and Toxicity-Reduced 2D Perovskite Single Crystal for High-Resolution X-ray Imaging

Two-dimensional (2D) lead halide perovskites are excellent candidates for X-ray detection due to their high resistivity, high ion migration barrier, and large X-ray absorption coefficients. However, the high toxicity and long interlamellar distance of the 2D perovskites limit their wide application in high sensitivity X-ray detection. Herein, we demonstrate stable and toxicity-reduced 2D perovskite single crystals (SCs) realized by interlamellar-spacing engineering via a distortion self-balancing strategy. The engineered low-toxicity 2D SC detectors achieve high stability, large mobility-lifetime product, and therefore high-performance X-ray detection. Specifically, the detectors exhibit a record high sensitivity of 13488 μC Gy1- cm-2, a low detection limit of 8.23 nGy s-1, as well as a high spatial resolution of 8.56 lp mm-1 in X-ray imaging, all of which are far better than those of the high-toxicity 2D lead-based perovskite detectors. These advances provide a new technical solution for the low-cost fabrication of low-toxicity, scalable X-ray detectors.

Lead-Free Perovskite Single Crystal Linear Array Detector for High-Resolution X-Ray Imaging

0D Bi-based 329-type halide perovskite is demonstrated as a promising semiconductor for X-ray detection due to its strong X-ray absorption, superior stability, availability of large single crystals (SCs) and solution processibility at low temperature. However, its low mobility-lifetime product (µτ) limits its further improvement in detection sensitivity. Based on the first-principles calculations, this work designs a new 2D Bi-based 329-type halide perovskite using a mixed-halide-induced structural dimension regulation strategy. By using a continuous supply of a precursor solution, this work successfully grows inch-sized high-quality SCs. These SCs exhibit large µτ product, high resistivity, and low ion migration. The detectors fabricated using the SCs show X-ray detection sensitivity as high as 24,509 µC Gyair -1 cm-2, short response time of 315 µs, low detection limit of 4.3 nGy s-1, and superior stability. These properties are the best among all lead-free perovskite detectors and are comparable to those of the best lead-based perovskite detectors. The linear array detector assembled on the SCs for the first time also shows a high spatial resolution of 10.6 lp mm-1 during X-ray imaging. The high performance combined with superior stability of these new 329-type lead-free halide perovskite SCs is expected to promote a new generation of X-ray detection technologies.

On-Substrate Fabrication of CsPbBr3 Single-Crystal Microstructures via Nanoparticle Self-Assembly-Assisted Low-Temperature Sintering

The growth of all-inorganic perovskite single-crystal microstructures on substrates is a promising approach for constructing photonic and electronic microdevices. However, current preparation methods typically involve direct control of ions or atoms, which often depends on specific lattice-matched substrates for epitaxial growth and other stringent conditions that limit the mild preparation and flexibility of device integration. Herein, we present the on-substrate fabrication of CsPbBr3 single-crystal microstructures obtained via a nanoparticle self-assembly assisted low-temperature sintering (NSALS) method. Sintering guided by self-assembled atomically oriented superlattice embryos facilitated the formation of single-crystal microstructures under mild conditions without substrate dependence. The as-prepared on-substrate microstructures exhibited a consistent out-of-plane orientation with a carrier lifetime of up to 82.7 ns. Photodetectors fabricated by using these microstructures exhibited an excellent photoresponse of 9.15 A/W, and the dynamic optical response had a relative standard deviation as low as 0.1831%. The discrete photosensor microarray chip with 174000 pixels in a 100 mm2 area showed a response difference of less than 6%. This method of nanoscale particle-controlled single crystal growth on a substrate offers a perspective for mild-condition preparation and in situ repair of crystals of various types. This advancement can propel the flexible integration and widespread application of perovskite devices.

Reconfigurable perovskite X-ray detector for intelligent imaging

X-ray detection is widely used in various applications. However, to meet the demand for high image quality and high accuracy diagnosis, the raw data increases and imposes challenges for conventional X-ray detection hardware regarding data transmission and power consumption. To tackle these issues, we present a scheme of in-X-ray-detector computing based on CsPbBr3 single-crystal detector with convenient polarity reconfigurability, good linear dynamic range, and robust stability. The detector features a stable trap-free device structure and achieves a high linear dynamic range of 106 dB. As a result, the detector could achieve edge extraction imaging with a data compression ratio of ~50%, and could also be programmed and trained to perform pattern recognition tasks with a high accuracy of 100%. Our research shows that in-X-ray-detector computing can be used in flexible and complex scenarios, making it a promising platform for intelligent X-ray imaging.

Perovskite materials in X-ray detection and imaging: recent progress, challenges, and future prospects

Perovskite materials have attracted significant attention as innovative and efficient X-ray detectors owing to their unique properties compared to traditional X-ray detectors. Herein, chronologically, we present an in-depth analysis of X-ray detection technologies employing organic-inorganic hybrids (OIHs), all-inorganic and lead-free perovskite material-based single crystals (SCs), thin/thick films and wafers. Particularly, this review systematically scrutinizes the advancement of the diverse synthesis methods, structural modifications, and device architectures exploited to enhance the radiation sensing performance. In addition, a critical analysis of the crucial factors affecting the performance of the devices is also provided. Our findings revealed that the improvement from single crystallization techniques dominated the film and wafer growth techniques. The probable reason for this is that SC-based devices display a lower trap density, higher resistivity, large carrier mobility and lifetime compared to film- and wafer-based devices. Ultimately, devices with SCs showed outstanding sensitivity and the lowest detectable dose rate (LDDR). These results are superior to some traditional X-ray detectors such as amorphous selenium and CZT. In addition, the limited performance of film-based devices is attributed to the defect formation in the bulk film, surfaces, and grain boundaries. However, wafer-based devices showed the worst performance because of the formation of voids, which impede the movement of charge carriers. We also observed that by performing structural modification, various research groups achieved high-performance devices together with stability. Finally, by fusing the findings from diverse research works, we provide a valuable resource for researchers in the field of X-ray detection, imaging and materials science. Ultimately, this review will serve as a roadmap for directing the difficulties associated with perovskite materials in X-ray detection and imaging, proposing insights into the recent status, challenges, and promising directions for future research.

Heavy-to-light electron transition enabling real-time spectra detection of charged particles by a biocompatible semiconductor

The current challenge of wearable/implantable personal dosimeters for medical diagnosis and radiotherapy applications is lack of suitable detector materials possessing both excellent detection performance and biocompatibility. Here, we report a solution-grown biocompatible organic single crystalline semiconductor (OSCS), 4-Hydroxyphenylacetic acid (4HPA), achieving real-time spectral detection of charged particles with single-particle sensitivity. Along in-plane direction, two-dimensional anisotropic 4HPA exhibits a large electron drift velocity of 5 × 105 cm s-1 at "radiation-mode" while maintaining a high resistivity of (1.28 ± 0.003) × 1012 Ω·cm at "dark-mode" due to influence of dense π-π overlaps and high-energy L1 level. Therefore, 4HPA detectors exhibit the record spectra detection of charged particles among their organic counterparts, with energy resolution of 36%, (μt)e of (4.91 ± 0.07) × 10-5 cm2 V-1, and detection time down to 3 ms. These detectors also show high X-ray detection sensitivity of 16,612 μC Gyabs-1 cm-3, detection of limit of 20 nGyair s-1, and long-term stability after 690 Gyair irradiation.

Growth methods' effect on the physical characteristics of CsPbBr3 single crystal

This study offers an extensive exploration into approaches for cultivating CsPbBr3 SCs using inverse temperature crystallization (ITC), with a specific focus on seed-induced (method (1)) and nucleation-mediated (method (2)) growth techniques. Our findings reveal that leveraging seed-assisted growth at lower temperatures yields noteworthy enhancements in the material's optical and electrical behaviors, outperforming the outcomes achieved through nucleation-driven growth. Concretely, through the employment of the space charge limited current (SCLC) technique, an evident contrast emerges in the trap-populated threshold voltage between the seed-facilitated crystal (SC1) (measuring 0.309 V) and its nucleation-facilitated counterpart (SC2) (measuring 1.513 V), consequently giving rise to discernable dissimilarities in trap density assessments. Evidence from temperature-dependent analysis of space charge limited currents substantiates these findings, revealing trap density values of 8.81 × 109 cm-3 for SC1, juxtaposed with 2.08 × 1010 cm-3 for SC2. Additionally, the SC1 displays a notably diminished trap energy level. Furthermore, the investigation underscores the affirmative influence of method (1) at lower temperatures on the optical and crystalline characteristics of the substance. This effect is evidenced by enhanced photoluminescence (PL) reactions and reduced lattice strain (Ls), as determined through X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. Moreover, the research establishes the substantial impact of this enhanced crystallization technique on the photodetector (PD) attributes of the crystal. This effect induces elevated levels of detectivity and responsivity for method (1).

Ultrasensitive and Robust CsPbBr3 Single-Crystal X-ray Detectors Based on Interface Engineering

Halide lead perovskites have shown great development in recent years for ionizing radiation detection. However, the bias-induced interfacial electrochemical reaction between the perovskite and electrode severely deteriorates detector performance. We report that BCP strongly interacts with Al and constructs a stable Al-BCP chelating interface, resulting in the suppression of a detrimental electrochemical reaction. The fabricated Au/Al/BCP/C60/CsPbBr3/Au detector shows a low dark current of 3 nA with a stable baseline at an extremely high bias of 100 V (∼100 V mm-1). The superior high-bias stability enables a high sensitivity of 7.3 × 104 μC Gyair-1 cm-2 at 100 V. Meanwhile, a low detection limit of 15 nGyair s-1 at 40 V is achieved due to the reduced noise. The outstanding performance of our device exceeds that of most advanced detectors based on CsPbBr3 single crystals. Besides, X-ray imaging with 1 mm spatial resolution is well demonstrated at a low dose rate of 200 nGyair s-1. The interfacial chelating strategy overcomes the technical limitation of bias-induced instability of perovskite radiation detectors and can be anticipated to operate under an extremely high electrical field.

Cascade perovskite single crystal for gamma-ray spectroscopy

The halide lead perovskite single crystals (HLPSCs) have great potential in gamma-ray detection with high attenuation coefficient, strong defects tolerance, and large mobility-lifetime product. However, mobile halide ions would migrate under high external bias, which would both weaken the gamma-ray response and cause additional noise. Here, we report the gamma-ray PIN photodiodes made of cascade HLPSCs including both ion-formed and electron-hole-formed electrical junctions that could suppress the ions migration and improve the charges collection. Our photodiodes based on cascade HLPSCs (MAPbBr3/MAPbBr2.5Cl0.5/MAPbCl3) show a wide halide-ion-formed depletion layer of ∼52 μm. The built-in potential along the wide ionic-formed junction ensures a high mobility-lifetime product of 1.1 × 10-2 cm2V-1. As a result, our gamma-ray PIN photodiodes exhibit compelling response to 241Am, 137Cs, and 60Co; the energy resolution can reach 9.4%@59.5keV and 5.9%@662keV, respectively. This work provides a new path toward constructing high-performance gamma-ray detectors based on HLPSCs.

Visualized X-ray Dosimetry for Multienvironment Applications

X-ray dose detection plays a critical role in various scientific fields, including chemistry, materials, and medicine. However, the current materials used for this purpose face challenges in both immediate and delayed radiation detections. Here, we present a visual X-ray dosimetry method for multienvironment applications, utilizing NaLuF4 nanocrystals (NCs) that undergo a color change from green to red upon X-ray irradiation. By adjustment of the concentrations of Ho3+, the emission color of the NCs can be tuned thanks to the cross-relaxation effects. Furthermore, X-ray irradiation induces generation of trapping centers in NaLuF4:Ho3+ NCs, endowing the generation of mechanoluminescence (ML) behavior upon mechanical stimulation after X-ray irradiation ceases. The ML intensity shows a linear correlation with the X-ray dose, facilitating the detection of delayed radiation. This breakthrough facilitates X-ray dose inspection in flaw detection, nuclear medicine, customs, and civil protection, thereby enhancing opportunities for radiation monitoring and control.
