Abstract
The Zn dendrite limits the practical application of aqueous zinc-ion batteries in the large-scale energy storage systems. To suppress the growth of Zn dendrites, a zinc ionophore of hydroxychloroquine (defined as HCQ) applied in vivo treatment is investigated as the electrolyte additive. HCQ dynamically regulates zinc ion concentration in the outer Helmholtz layer, promoting even Zn plating at the anode/electrolyte interface. This is evidenced by the scanning electron microscopy, which delivers planar Zn plating after cycling. It is further supported by the X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, which reveals the growth of Zn (002) plane. Additionally, the reduced production of H2 during Zn plating/stripping is detected by the in-situ differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS), which shows the resistance of Zn (002) to hydrogen evolution reaction. The mechanism of dynamic regulation for zinc ion concentration is demonstrated by the in-situ optical microscopy. The hydrated zinc ion can be further plated more rapidly to the uneven location than the case in other regions, which is resulted from the dynamic regulation for zinc ion concentration. Therefore, the uniform Zn plating is formed. A cycling life of 1100 h is exhibited in the Zn||Zn symmetric cell at 1.6 mA cm-2 with the capacity of 1.6 mAh cm-2. The Zn||Cu battery exhibits a cycling life of 200 cycles at 4 mA cm-2 with a capacity of 4 mAh cm-2 and the average Coulombic efficiency is larger than 99 %. The Zn||VO2 battery with HCQ modified electrolyte can operate for 1500 cycles at 4 A g-1 with a capacity retention of 90 %. This strategy in the present work is wished to advance the development of zinc-ion batteries for practical application.

Abstract
A large concentration gradient originating from sluggish ion transport on the surface of Zn metal anodes will result in uneven Zn2+ flux, giving rise to severe dendrite growth, especially at high current density. Herein, an ion acceleration layer is introduced by a facile separator engineering strategy to realize modulated Zn2+ flux and dendrite-free deposition. Zinc hexacyanoferrate as the modifying agent featuring strong zincophilicity and rapid diffusion tunnel can enable fast trap for Zn2+ near the electrode surface and immediate transport onto deposition sites, respectively. The ion acceleration effect is substantiated by improved ion conductivity, decreased activated energy, and promoted Zn2+ transference number, which can moderate concentration gradient to guide homogenous Zn2+ flux distribution. As a result, the separator engineering guarantees Zn||Zn symmetrical cells with long-term stability of 2700 h at 2 mA cm-2, and 1770 h at a large current density of 10 mA cm-2. Moreover, cycling stability and rate capability for full cells with different cathodes can be substantially promoted by the modified separator, validating its superior practical feasibility. This study supplies a new scalable approach to tailoring ion flux near the electrode surface to enable robust Zn metal anodes at a high current density.

Abstract
Zn metal anodes experience dendritic growth and hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) in aqueous batteries. Herein, we propose an interface regulation strategy with a trace (1.4 × 10-4 mol kg-1) all-in-one epicatechin (EC) electrolyte additive to solve the above issues and reveal the roles of individual functional groups. By the disassembly of EC into simple molecules combined with entire molecule investigations, we show that phenol and ether sites preferentially anchor on the Zn surface, while the hydroxyl group pointing outward enters Zn2+ solvation shells at the interface. It modifies the following desolvation path, which not only enables uniform deposition with the thermodynamically favored plate morphology but also inhibits HER. With these synergistic effects of trace EC additive, the lifespan of symmetric cells extends to 8.5 times that of the baseline ZnSO4 electrolyte. The capacity retention of Zn//MnO2 full batteries with N/P = 3 also increases from 59.1 to 85.6% after 500 cycles.

Abstract
Dendrite growth and corrosion issues have significantly hindered the usability of Zn anodes, which further restricts the development of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). In this study, a zinc-philic and hydrophobic Zn (100) crystal plane end-capping reagent (ECR) is introduced into the electrolyte to address these challenges in AZIBs. Specifically, under the mediation of 100-ECR, the electroplated Zn configures oriented dense deposition of (100) crystal plane texture, which slows down the formation of dendrites. Furthermore, owing to the high corrosion resistance of the (100) crystal plane and the hydrophobic protective interface formed by the adsorbed ECR on the electrode surface, the Zn anode demonstrates enhanced reversibility and higher Coulombic efficiency in the modified electrolyte. Consequently, superior electrochemical performance is achieved through this novel crystal plane control strategy and interface protection technology. The Zn//VO2 cells based on the modified electrolyte maintained a high-capacity retention of ≈80.6% after 1350 cycles, corresponding to a low-capacity loss rate of only 0.014% per cycle. This study underscores the importance of deposition uniformity and corrosion resistance of crystal planes over their type. And through crystal plane engineering, a high-quality (100) crystal plane is constructed, thereby expanding the range of options for viable Zn anodes.

Abstract
Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) stand out among new energy storage devices due to their excellent safety and environmental friendliness. However, the formation of dendrites and side reactions on the zinc metal anode during cycling have become the major obstacles to their commercialization. This study innovatively selected Sodium 4-vinylbenzenesulfonate (VBS) as a multifunctional electrolyte additive to address the issues. The dissociated VBS- anions can not only significantly alter the hydrogen bond network structure of H2O in the electrolyte, but also preferentially adsorb on the surface of the zinc anode before H2O molecules, which will result in the development of organic anion-rich interface and alterations to the electrical double layer (EDL) structure. Furthermore, the ─C═C─ structure in VBS leads to the formation of an in situ polymerized organic anion solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer that adheres to the surface of the zinc anode. The mechanisms work together to significantly improve the performance of Zn//Zn symmetric batteries, achieving a cycle life of over 1800 h at 1 mA cm-2 and 1 mAh cm-2. The introduction of VBS also enhances the cycling performance and capacity of Zn//δ-MnO2 full cells. This study provides a low-cost solution for the development of AZIBs.

Abstract
Gel electrolytes hold promise for stabilizing zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs), but achieving both high ionic conductivity and strong mechanical properties remains challenging. This work presents a double network gel electrolyte based on poly(N-hydroxymethyl acrylamide) (PNMA) and sodium alginate (SA), overcoming this trade-off. The PNMA network provides mechanical strength and water retention, while the SA network facilitates rapid zinc-ion (Zn2+) diffusion through tailored solvation. This double network gel exhibits a tensile strength of up to 838 kPa, significantly higher than previous reports. The SA network provides ion channels for rapid transport of hydrated Zn2+, enhancing the ionic conductivity to a ground-breaking 33.1 mS cm-1. This value is even higher than the liquid electrolytes. The growth of Zn dendrites is also suppressed due to the mechanical constraint and rapid ion conduction. In symmetrical cells, the PNMA/SA gel demonstrates exceptional cycling stability (>2000 h). Characterizations show this is because of reduced free water amount, hindering cathode material dissolution. The full cells with sodium vanadate cathode manifest a high capacity (364.8 mA h g-1 at 0.5 A g-1) and excellent capacity retention (83% after 2500 cycles at 10 A g-1). This double network design offers a way to achieve high-performance and stable ZIBs.

Abstract
Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have inherent merits, such as a low price, good safety and high volumetric capacity, and have promising potential for widespread applications. However, the unexpected issues posed by both water-induced side reactions and the uncontrollable growth of zinc dendrites on the zinc anode-electrolyte interface have significantly hindered the widespread application of AZIBs. In this work, barbital (Bb), which has two amide groups, was introduced into a ZnSO4 electrolyte to create a Bb@ZnSO4 electrolyte. The hydrolysis of the amide groups resulted in the formation of strong polar groups (carboxyl and amino), which could efficiently anchor zinc ions. Specifically, through the derivation of Bb, it was possible to adjust the Zn2+ solvation structure, decreasing the coordinated active SO42-/H2O and promoting the anchoring of these species on the surface of the zinc anode. This process provided electrostatic shielding and isolates the SO42-/H2O, demonstrating an interface regulating effect and synergistic solvation. Therefore, Bb could mitigate electrochemical corrosion and facilitate dendrite-free homogeneous zinc deposition. As a consequence, the assembled asymmetric Zn∥V2O5 full cell utilizing the Bb@ZnSO4 electrolyte showed highest specific capacities of 294.9 and 92.7 mA h g-1 at 0.1 and 1 A g-1, much higher than the Zn∥V2O5 full cell with the ZnSO4 electrolyte, which delivered specific capacities of 161.1 and 3.0 mA h g-1 at the same current densities. These findings promise to realize the practical application of Bb as an efficient additive in high-performance AZIBs.

Abstract
Aqueous Zn-ion batteries are promising candidates for next-generation energy storage devices due to the advantages of high safety, low cost and good environmental friendliness. However, the uncontrollable dendrite growth and undesirable side reactions occurring on the Zn anode result in poor cycling stability. Herein, a Lewis base, triethanolamine, is used as the electrolyte additive to construct a hybrid solid-electrolyte interphase layer composed of a static ZnSO4·3Zn(OH)2·4H2O layer and dynamic quaternary ammonium ion adsorption layer. The static SEI layer acts as a physical barrier between the Zn anode and electrolyte, thus effectively suppressing chemical corrosion and the hydrogen evolution reaction. The dynamic layer can not only regulate the ion flux at the interface, but also promote the de-solvation of solvated Zn2+, thus leading to homogenous Zn deposition along the (002) electro-crystallization orientation. As a result, the Zn anode demonstrates an extended cycle life of 2500 h at a current density of 1.0 mA cm-2, with an areal capacity of 1.0 mA h cm-2 and a high coulombic efficiency (CE) of 98.94%. The Zn‖V2O5 cells exhibit a specific capacity of 178.4 mA h g-1 after 500 cycles, indicating both high capacity and robust cycling stability, which are essential for practical applications.

Abstract
Aqueous Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHSs) are attracting significant attention as a promising electrochemical energy storage system. However, carbon cathodes of ZHSs exhibit unsatisfactory ion storage performance due to the large size of hydrated Zn-ions (e.g., [Zn(H2O)6]2+), which encumbers compact ion arrangement and rapid ion transport at the carbon-electrolyte interfaces. Herein, a porous carbon material (HMFC) with abundant sub-nanopores is synthesized to optimize the ion storage performance of the carbon cathode in ZHSs, in which the sub-nanopores effectively promote the dehydration of hydrated Zn-ions and thus optimize the ion storage performance of the carbon cathode in ZHSs. A novel strategy is proposed to study the dehydration behaviors of hydrated Zn-ions in carbon cathodes, including quantitatively determining the desolvation activation energy of hydrated Zn-ions and in-situ monitoring active water content at the carbon-electrolyte interface. The sub-nanopores-induced desolvation effect is verified, and its coupling with large specific surface area and hierarchically porous structure endows the HMFC cathode with improved electrochemical performance, including a 53 % capacity increase compared to the carbon cathode counterpart without sub-nanopores, fast charge/discharge ability that can output 46.0 Wh/kg energy within only 4.4 s, and 98.2 % capacity retention over 20,000 charge/discharge cycles. This work provides new insights into the rational design of porous carbon cathode materials toward high-performance ZHSs.

Abstract
Metallic zinc exhibits immense potential as an anode material for aqueous rechargeable zinc batteries due to its high theoretical capacity, low redox potential, and inherent safety. However, practical applications are hindered by dendrite formation and poor cycling stability. Herein, a facile substitution reaction method is presented to fabricate a 3D leaf-like Cu@Zn composite anode. This unique architecture, featuring a 3D network of leaf-like Cu on a Zn foil surface, significantly reduces nucleation overpotential and facilitates uniform Zn plating/stripping, effectively suppressing dendrite growth. Notably, an alloy layer of CuZn5 forms in situ on the 3D Cu layer during cycling. DFT calculations reveal that this CuZn5 alloy possesses a lower Zn binding energy compared to both Cu and Zn metal, further promoting Zn plating/stripping and enhancing electrochemical kinetics. Consequently, the symmetric Cu@Zn electrode exhibits remarkable cycling stability, surpassing 1300 h at 0.5 mA cm-2 with negligible dendrite formation. Furthermore, full cells comprising Cu@Zn||VO2 exhibit superior capacity and rate performance compared to bare Zn anodes. This work provides a promising strategy for constructing highly stable and efficient Zn anodes for next-generation aqueous zinc batteries.

Abstract
Manipulating the crystallographic orientation of zinc (Zn) metal to expose more (002) planes is promising to stabilize Zn anodes in aqueous electrolytes. However, there remain challenges involving the non-epitaxial electrodeposition of highly (002) textured Zn metal and the maintenance of (002) texture under deep cycling conditions. Herein, a novel organic imidazolium cations-assisted non-epitaxial electrodeposition strategy to texture electrodeposited Zn metals is developed. Taking the 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium cation (Bmim+) as a paradigm additive, the as-prepared Zn film ((002)-Zn) manifests a compact structure and a highly (002) texture without containing (100) signal. Mechanistic studies reveal that Bmim+ featuring oriented adsorption on the Zn-(002) plane can reduce the growth rate of (002) plane to render the final exposure of (002) texture, and homogenize Zn nucleation and suppress H2 evolution to enable the compact electrodeposition. In addition, the formulated Bmim+-containing ZnSO4 electrolyte effectively sustains the (002) texture even under deep cycling conditions. Consequently, the combination of (002) texture and Bmim+-containing electrolyte endows the (002)-Zn electrode with superior cycling stability over 350 h under 20 mAh cm-2 with 72.6% depth-of-discharge, and assures the stable operation of full Zn batteries with both coin-type and pouch-type configurations, significantly outperforming the (002)-Zn and commercial Zn-based batteries in Bmim+-free electrolytes.

Abstract
Uncontrollable dendrite growth and corrosion induced by reactive water molecules and sulfate ions (SO42-) seriously hindered the practical application of aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs). Here we construct artificial solid electrolyte interfaces (SEIs) realized by sodium and calcium bentonite with a layered structure anchored to anodes (NB@Zn and CB@Zn). This artificial SEI layer functioning as a protective coating to isolate activated water molecules, provides high-speed transport channels for Zn2+, and serves as an ionic sieve to repel negatively charged anions while attracting positively charged cations. The theoretical results show that the bentonite electrodes exhibit a higher binding energy for Zn2+. This demonstrates that the bentonite protective layer enhances the Zn-ion deposition kinetics. Consequently, the NB@Zn//MnO2 and CB@Zn//MnO2 full-battery capacities are 96.7 and 70.4 mAh g-1 at 2.0 A g-1 after 1000 cycles, respectively. This study aims to stabilize Zn anodes and improve the electrochemical performance of AZIBs by ion-selection sieving.

Abstract
The inherent benefits of aqueous Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs), such as environmental friendliness, affordability, and high theoretical capacity, render them promising candidates for energy storage systems. Nevertheless, the Zn anodes of ZIBs encounter severe challenges, including dendrite formation, hydrogen evolution reaction, corrosion, and surface passivation. These would result in the infeasibility of ZIBs in practical situations. To this end, artificial interfaces with functionalized materials are crafted to protect the Zn anode. They have the capability to modulate the zinc ion flux in proximity to the electrode surface and shield it from aqueous electrolytes by leveraging either size effects or charge effects. Considering metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with tunable pore size, chemical composition, and stable framework structures, they have emerged as effective materials for building artificial interfaces, prolonging the lifespan, and improving the unitization of Zn anode. In this review, the contributions of MOFs for protecting Zn anode, which mainly involves facilitating homogeneous nucleation, manipulating selective deposition, regulating ion and charge flux, accelerating Zn desolvation, and shielding against free water and anions are comprehensively summarized. Importantly, the future research trajectories of MOFs for the protection of the Zn anode are underscored, which may propose new perspectives on the practical Zn anode and endow the MOFs with high-value applications.

Abstract
Zn dendrite growth and side reactions restrict the practical use of Zn anode. Herein, the design of a novel 3D hierarchical structure is demonstrated with self-zincophilic dual-protection constructed by ZnO and Zn nanoparticles immobilized on carbon fibers (ZnO/Zn⊂CF) as a versatile host on the Zn surface. The unique 3D frameworks with abundant zinc nucleation storage sites can alleviate the structural stress during the plating/stripping process and overpower Zn dendrite growth by moderating Zn2+ flux. Moreover, given the dual protection design, it can reduce the contact area between active zinc and electrolyte, inhibiting hydrogen evolution reactions. Importantly, density functional theory calculations and experimental results confirm that the introduced O atoms in ZnO/Zn⊂CF enhance the interaction between Zn2+ and the host and reduce Zn nucleation overpotential. As expected, the ZnO/Zn⊂CF-Zn electrode exhibits stable Zn plating/stripping with low polarization for 4200 h at 0.2 mA cm-2 and 0.2 mAh cm-2. Furthermore, the symmetrical cell displays a significantly long cycling life of over 1800 h, even at 30 mA cm-2. The fabricated full cells also show impressive cycling performance when coupled with V2O3 cathodes.

Abstract
Aqueous zinc ion batteries have received widespread attention due to their merits of high safety, high theoretical specific capacity, low cost, and environmental benignity. Nevertheless, the irreversible issues of Zn anode deriving from side reactions and dendrite growth have hindered its commercialization in large-scale energy storage systems. Herein, a zinc phosphate tetrahydrate (Zn3(PO4)2·4H2O, ZnPO) coating layer is in situ formed on the bare Zn by spontaneous redox reactions at room temperature to tackle the above issues. Particularly, the dense and brick-like ZnPO layer can effectively separate the anode surface from the aqueous electrolyte, thus suppressing the serious side reactions. Moreover, the ZnPO layer with high ionic conductivity, high Zn2+ transference number, and low nucleation barrier permits rapid Zn2+ transport and enables uniform Zn deposition, ensuring dendrite-free Zn deposition. As a result, the ZnPO@Zn symmetric battery achieves a high Coulombic efficiency of 99.8% and displays ultrahigh cycle stability over 6000 h (> 8 months), far surpassing its counterparts. Furthermore, the ZnPO@Zn||MnO2 full battery exhibits excellent electrochemical performances. Therefore, this work provides a new reference for simple and large-scale preparation of highly reversible Zn metal anodes, and has great potential for practical applications.

Abstract
Unstable Zn interface with serious detrimental parasitic side-reactions and uncontrollable Zn dendrites severely plagues the practical application of aqueous zinc-ion batteries. The interface stability was closely related to the electrolyte configuration and Zn2+ depositional behavior. In this work, a unique Zn-ion anchoring strategy is originally proposed to manipulate the coordination structure of solvated Zn-ions and guide the Zn-ion depositional behavior. Specifically, the amphoteric charged ion additives (denoted as DM), which act as zinc-ion anchors, can tightly absorb on the Zn surface to guide the uniform zinc-ion distribution by using its positively charged -NR4 + groups. While the negatively charged -SO3 - groups of DM on the other hand, reduces the active water molecules within solvation sheaths of Zn-ions. Benefiting from the special synergistic effect, Zn metal exhibits highly ordered and compact (002) Zn deposition and negligible side-reactions. As a result, the advanced Zn||Zn symmetric cell delivers extraordinarily 7000 hours long lifespan (0.25 mA cm-2, 0.25 mAh cm-2). Additionally, based on this strategy, the NH4V4O10||Zn pouch-cell with low negative/positive capacity ratio (N/P ratio=2.98) maintains 80.4 % capacity retention for 180 cycles. A more practical 4 cm*4 cm sized pouch-cell could be steadily cycled in a high output capacity of 37.0 mAh over 50 cycles.

Abstract
Amidst the global trend of advancing renewable energies toward carbon neutrality, energy storage becomes increasingly critical due to the intermittency of renewables. As an alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), aqueous batteries have received growing attention for large-scale energy storage due to their economical and safe features. Despite the fruitful achievements at the material level, the reliability and lifetime of aqueous batteries are still far from satisfactory. Alike LIBs, integrating smartness is essential for more reliable and long-life aqueous batteries via operando monitoring and automatic response to extreme abuses. In this review, recent advances in sensing techniques and multifunctional battery-sensor systems together with self-healing methods in aqueous batteries is summarized. The significant role of artificial intelligence in designing and optimizing aqueous batteries with high efficiency is also highlighted. Ultimately, it is extrapolated toward the future and present the humble perspective for building smarter aqueous batteries.

Designing a cost-effective and multifunctional separator that ensures dendrite-free and stable Zn metal anode remains a significant challenge. Herein, a multifunctional cellulose-based separator is presented consisting of industrial waste-fly ash particles and cellulose nanofiber using a facile solution-coating method. The resulting fly ash-cellulose (FACNF) separators enable a high ion conductivity (5.76 mS cm-1) and low desolvation energy barrier of hydrated Zn2+. These features facilitate fast ion transfer kinetics and inhibit water-induced side reactions. Furthermore, experimental results and theoretical simulations confirm that the presence of fly ash particles in FACNF separators effectively accommodate the preferential deposition of Zn(002) planes, due to the weak chemical affinity between Zn(002) plane and fly ash, to mitigate dendrite formation and growth. Consequently, the utilization of FACNF separators causes an impressive cycling performance in both Zn||Zn symmetric cells (1600 h at 2 mA cm-2/1 mAh cm-2) and Zn||(NH4)2V10O25 (NVO) full cells (4000 cycles with the capacity retention of 92.1% at 5 A g-1). Furthermore, the assembled pouch cells can steadily support digital thermometer over two months without generating gas and volume expansion. This work provides new insights for achieving crystallographic uniformity in Zn anodes and realizing cost-effective and long-lasting aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs).

Abstract
Despite many additives have been reported for aqueous zinc ion batteries, steric-hindrance effect of additives and its correlation with Zn2+ solvation structure have been rarely reported. Herein, large-sized sucrose biomolecule is selected as a paradigm additive, and steric-hindrance electrolytes (STEs) are developed to investigate the steric-hindrance effect for solvation structure regulation. Sucrose molecules do not participate in Zn2+ solvation shell, but significantly homogenize the distribution of solvated Zn2+ and enlarge Zn2+ solvation shell with weakened Zn2+-H2O interaction due to the steric-hindrance effect. More importantly, STEs afford the water-shielding electric double layer and in situ construct the organic and inorganic hybrid solid electrolyte interface, which effectively boost Zn anode reversibility. Remarkably, Zn//NVO battery presents high capacity of 3.9 mAh ⋅ cm-2 with long cycling stability for over 650 cycles at lean electrolyte of 4.5 μL ⋅ mg-1 and low N/P ratio of 1.5, and the stable operation at wide temperature (-20 °C~+40 °C).

Abstract
While aqueous zinc-ion batteries exhibit great potential, their performance is impeded by zinc dendrites. Existing literature has proposed the use of hydrogel electrolytes to ameliorate this issue. Nevertheless, the mechanical attributes of hydrogel electrolytes, particularly their modulus, are suboptimal, primarily ascribed to the substantial water content. This drawback would severely restrict the dendrite-inhibiting efficacy, especially under large mass loadings of active materials. Inspired by the structural characteristics of wood, this study endeavors to fabricate the anisotropic carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogel electrolyte through directional freezing, salting-out effect, and compression reinforcement, aiming to maximize the modulus along the direction perpendicular to the electrode surface. The heightened modulus concurrently serves to suppress the vertical deposition of the intermediate product at the cathode. Meanwhile, the oriented channels with low tortuosity enabled by the anisotropic structure are beneficial to the ionic transport between the anode and cathode. Comparative analysis with an isotropic hydrogel sample reveals a marked enhancement in both modulus and ionic conductivity in the anisotropic hydrogel. This enhancement contributes to significantly improved zinc stripping/plating reversibility and mitigated electrochemical polarization. Additionally, a durable quasi-solid-state Zn//MnO2 battery with noteworthy volumetric energy density is realized. This study offers unique perspectives for designing hydrogel electrolytes and augmenting battery performance.

Abstract
Hydrogen reduction reaction (HER) and corrosion limit the long-life cycle of zinc-ion batteries. However, hydrophilic separators are unable to prevent direct contact between water and electrodes, and hydrophobic separators have difficulty in transporting electrolytes. In this work, an inorganic oxide-based "hydrophobic-hydrophilic-hydrophobic" self-assembled separator system is proposed. The hydrophobic layer consists of a porous structure, which can isolate a large amount of free water to avoid HER and corrosion reactions, and can transport electrolyte by binding water. The middle hydrophilic layer acts as a storage layer consisting of the GF separator, storing large amounts of electrolyte for proper circulation. By using this structure separator, Zn||Zn symmetric cell achieve 2200 h stable cycle life at 5 mA cm-2 and 1mAh cm-2 and still shows a long life of 1800 h at 10 mA cm-2 and 1mAh cm-2. The assembled Zn||VO2 full cell displays high specific capacity and excellent long-term durability of 60.4% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 2C. The assembled Zn||VO2 pouch full cell displays high specific capacity of 172.5mAh g-1 after 40 cycles at 0.5C. Changing the inorganic oxide materials, the hydrophobic-hydrophilic-hydrophobic structure of the separators still has excellent performance. This work provides a new idea for the engineering of water-based battery separators.

Abstract
Rampant dendrite formation and serious adverse parasitic reactions induced by migration of dissolved V/Mn cathode ions on Zn anode have hampered the high performance of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). Inspired by the coordination chemistry between functional groups of polymer and electrolyte ions, a freestanding layer consisting of dopamine-functionalized polypyrrole (DA-PPy) nanowires served as a selective ion transport layer at the anode-electrolyte interface to address these two issues, which could simultaneously avoid polarization caused by the introduction of an additional interface. On the one hand, the DA-PPy layer displays excellent zinc ion and charge transfer ability, as well as provides chemical homochanneling for zinc ions at the interface, which endow the DA-PPy layer with properties as a chemical guider and physical barrier for dendrite inhibition. On the other hand, the DA-PPy layer can trap excess transition metal ions fleeing from the cathodes, thus serving as a chemical barrier, preventing the formation of Vx+/Mnx+-passivation on the surface of the zinc anode. Consequently, the AZIBs based on V2O5 and MnO2 cathodes involving the DA-PPy functional layer show a great improvement in the capacity retention.

Abstract
The undesirable dendrite growth induced by non-planar zinc (Zn) deposition and low Coulombic efficiency resulting from severe side reactions have been long-standing challenges for metallic Zn anodes and substantially impede the practical application of rechargeable aqueous Zn metal batteries (ZMBs). Herein, we present a strategy for achieving a high-rate and long-cycle-life Zn metal anode by patterning Zn foil surfaces and endowing a Zn-Indium (Zn-In) interface in the microchannels. The accumulation of electrons in the microchannel and the zincophilicity of the Zn-In interface promote preferential heteroepitaxial Zn deposition in the microchannel region and enhance the tolerance of the electrode at high current densities. Meanwhile, electron aggregation accelerates the dissolution of non-(002) plane Zn atoms on the array surface, thereby directing the subsequent homoepitaxial Zn deposition on the array surface. Consequently, the planar dendrite-free Zn deposition and long-term cycling stability are achieved (5,050 h at 10.0 mA cm-2 and 27,000 cycles at 20.0 mA cm-2). Furthermore, a Zn/I2 full cell assembled by pairing with such an anode can maintain good stability for 3,500 cycles at 5.0 C, demonstrating the application potential of the as-prepared ZnIn anode for high-performance aqueous ZMBs.

Abstract
Aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) hold great promise for large-scale energy storage; however, severe zinc dendritic growth and side reactions on the anode dramatically impede their commercial application. Herein, a Zr-based MOF (UiO-66) functionalized with a high density of sulfonic acid (─SO3 H) groups is used to modify the glass fiber (GF) separator of ZIBs, providing a unique solution for stabilizing Zn anode. Benefiting from the strong interaction between zincophilic -SO3 H and Zn2+ , this sulfonate-rich UiO-66 modified GF (GF@UiO-S2) separator not only guarantees the homogeneous distribution of ion flux, but also accelerates the ion migration kinetics. Hence, the GF@UiO-S2 separator promotes uniform Zn plating/stripping on the Zn anode and facilitates the desolvation of hydrated Zn2+ ions at the interface, which helps guide dendrite-free Zn deposition and inhibit undesired side reactions. Accordingly, the Zn||Zn symmetric cell with this separator achieves excellent cycling stability with a long cycle life exceeding 3450 h at 3 mA cm-2 . Besides, the Zn||MnO2 full cell paired with this separator delivers remarkable cyclability with 90% capacity retention after 1200 cycles. This design of metal-organic frameworks functionalized separators provides a new insight for constructing highly robust ZIBs.

Abstract
Zn anodes of aqueous batteries face severe challenges from side reactions and dendrite growth. Here, triethanolamine (TEOA) is developed as an electrolyte additive to address these challenges. It enhances the exposure of Zn(002) and diminishes the change in pH. Therefore, the electrolyte containing TEOA shows improved electrochemical performance.

Abstract
Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have been considered as alternative stationary energy storage systems, but the dendrite and corrosion issues of Zn anodes hinder their practical applications. Here we report a series of two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with Zr12 clusters, which act as artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layers to prevent dendrites and corrosion of Zn anodes. The Zr12-based 2D MOF layers were formed by incubating 3D layer-pillared Zr-MOFs in ZnSO4 aqueous electrolytes, which replaced the pillar ligands with terminal SO42-. Furthermore, the pore sizes of Zr12-based 2D MOF layers were systematically tuned, leading to optimized Zn2+ conduction properties and protective performance for Zn anodes. In contrast to the traditional 2D-MOFs with Zr6 clusters, Zr12-based 2D MOF layers as artificial SEI significantly reduced the polarization and increased the stability of Zn anodes in MOF@Zn||MOF@Zn symmetric cells and MOF@Zn||MnO2 full cells. In situ experiments and DFT computations reveal that the enhanced cell performance is attributed to the unique Zr12-based layered structure with intrinsic pores to allow fast Zn2+ diffusion, surface Zr-SO4 zincophilic sites to induce uniform Zn deposition, and inhibited hydrogen evolution by 2D MOF Zr12 layers.

Abstract
The intrinsically low electrical conductivity and poor structural fragility of MnO2 have significantly hampered the zinc storage performance. In this work, Ba2+-implanted δ-MnO2 nanosheets have been hydrothermally grown on a carbon cloth (Ba-MnO2@CC) as an extremely stable and efficient cathode material of aqueous zinc-ion batteries. The three-dimensionally porous architecture composed of interwoven thin MnO2 nanosheets effectively shortens the electron/ion transport distances, enlarges the electrode/electrolyte contact area, and increases the active sites for the electrochemical reaction. Meanwhile, Ba2+ could function as an interlayer pillar to stabilize the crystal structure of MnO2. Consequently, the as-optimized Ba-MnO2@CC exhibits remarkable Zn2+ storage capabilities, such as a high capacity (305 mAh g-1 at 0.2 A g-1), prolonged lifespan (95% retention after a 200-cycling test), and superb rate capability. The binder-free cathode is also applicable for flexible energy storage devices with attractive properties. The present investigation provides important insights into designing advanced cathode materials toward wearable electronics.

Abstract
Zn-based electrochemical energy storage (EES) systems are attracting more attention, whereas their large-scale application is restricted by the dendrite and parasitic reaction-caused unstable Zn anodes. Herein, a negatively charged hydrophobic carbon nano-onion (CNO) interfacial layer is proposed to realize ultrastable and high-rate Zn anodes, enabling high-performance Zn-based EES. For the CNO interfacial layer, its hydrophobicity not only blocks active water but also reduces the Zn2+ desolvation barrier, and meanwhile, the negatively-charged CNO nanoparticles adsorb Zn2+ and repel SO4 2- to homogenize Zn2+ flux, accelerate Zn2+ desolvation and suppress the self-corrosion of Zn anodes. Besides, the conductive CNO interfacial layer increases the surface area for the Zn deposition to reduce local current density. Consequently, under the modulation of the CNO interfacial layer, Zn plating/stripping exhibits impressive reversibility with an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.4% over 800 cycles, and Zn anodes present significantly enhanced electrochemical stability and rate performance, whose operation lifetime exceeds 2000 h at 1 mA cm-2 and 350 h even at 10 mA cm-2 . Moreover, high-rate and ultralong-life Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitors are achieved with the CNO interfacial layer-modulated Zn anode and activated CNO cathode. This work provides new thinking in regulating the Zn deposition interface to realize high-performance Zn-based EES.

Abstract
Despite great prospects, Zn//MnO2 batteries suffer from rampant and vertical deposition of zinc sulfate hydroxide (ZSH) at the cathode surface, which leads to a significant impact on their electrochemical performance. This phenomenon is primarily due to the drastic increase in the electrolyte pH value upon discharging, which is closely associated with the electrodissolution of Mn-based active materials. Herein, the pH value change is effectively inhibited by employing an electrolyte additive with excellent pH buffering capability. As such, the formation of ZSH at the cathode is postponed, resulting in the deposition of ZSH in a horizontal arrangement. This strategy can significantly enhance the utilization efficiency of cathode active material, while also enabling a solid electrolyte interphase layer at the Zn anode to address low Zn stripping/plating reversibility. With the optimal electrolyte, the Zn//MnO2 battery realizes a 25.6% increase in the specific capacity at 0.2 A g-1 compared to that with the baseline electrolyte, great rate capability (161.6 mAh g-1 at 5 A g-1 ), and superior capacity retention (90.2% over 5,000 cycles). In addition, the pH buffering strategy is highly applicable in hydrogel electrolytes. This work underscores the importance of pH regulation for Zn//MnO2 batteries and provides enlightening insights.

Abstract
The Zn metal anode in aqueous Zn batteries faces a number of challenges including instable deposition and corrosion issues. Here, we present an interface environment regulation for a Zn electrode with a low concentration electrolyte additive of 0.1 m 3-aminobenzenesulfonic acid (ASA). ASA prefers to adsorb on the Zn surface over water and creates an ASA-rich interface. It further enters the Zn2+ solvation sheath locally, which shifts the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital from solvated water to ASA. The hydrogen evolution reaction from solvated water reduction is inhibited, and the reduction of solvated ASA generates a stable solid-electrolyte interphase composed of the ion conductor ZnS covered by organic-inorganic mixed components. With the resulting homogenized Zn deposition, continuous Zn stripping in symmetric cells reaches 99.7% depth of discharge (DOD) at a current density of 2 mA cm-2, whereas cell short-circuit takes place at 11.4% DOD in the ASA free ZnSO4 electrolyte. The repeated stripping/plating also realizes 1100 h cycle life at 2 mA cm-2, and a 99.54% stabilized coulombic efficiency is obtained for 500 cycles at 10 mA cm-2.

Abstract
Recently, aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have become increasingly attractive as grid-scale energy storage solutions due to their safety, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, severe dendrite growth, self-corrosion, hydrogen evolution, and irreversible side reactions occurring at Zn anodes often cause poor cyclability of ZIBs. This work develops a synergistic strategy to stabilize the Zn anode by introducing a molybdenum dioxide coating layer on Zn (MoO2@Zn) and Tween 80 as an electrolyte additive. Due to the redox capability and high electrical conductivity of MoO2, the coating layer can not only homogenize the surface electric field but also accommodate the Zn2+ concentration field in the vicinity of the Zn anode, thereby regulating Zn2+ ion distribution and inhibiting side reactions. MoO2 coating can also significantly enhance surface hydrophilicity to improve the wetting of electrolyte on the Zn electrode. Meanwhile, Tween 80, a surfactant additive, acts as a corrosion inhibitor, preventing Zn corrosion and regulating Zn2+ ion migration. Their combination can synergistically work to reduce the desolvation energy of hydrated Zn ions and stabilize the Zn anodes. Therefore, the symmetric cells of MoO2@Zn∥MoO2@Zn with optimal 1 mM Tween 80 additive in 1 M ZnSO4 achieve exceptional cyclability over 6000 h at 1 mA cm-2 and stability (>700 h) even at a high current density (5 mA cm-2). When coupling with the VO2 cathode, the full cell of MoO2@Zn∥VO2 shows a higher capacity retention (82.4%) compared to Zn∥VO2 (57.3%) after 1000 cycles at 5 A g-1. This study suggests a synergistic strategy of combining surface modification and electrolyte engineering to design high-performance ZIBs.

Abstract
Achieving stable Zn plating/stripping under high current density and large area capacity remains a major challenge for metal Zn anodes. To address this issue, common filter paper is utilized to construct 3D carbon fiber skeleton film modified with gradient Cu nanoparticles (CFF@Cu). The original zincophobic hydrophilic CFF is transformed into gradient zincophilic and reversed gradient hydrophilic composite, due to the gradient distribution of Cu nanoparticles. When CFF@Cu is placed above Zn foil as an auxiliary anode, Zn foil anode exhibits stable, reversible, and dendrite-free Zn plating/stripping for 1200 h at 10 mA cm-2 and 2 mAh cm-2 , 2000 h at 2 mA cm-2 and 2 mAh cm-2 , 340 h at 10 mA cm-2 and 10 mAh cm-2 . Additionally, nucleation barrier of Zn, Zn2+ transport and deposition kinetics are improved. The deposits on the Zn foil anode become homogeneous, dense, and fine. Side reactions and by-products are effectively inhibited. The excellent performance is mainly attributed to the gradient zincophilic field in 3D CFF. A portion of Zn2+ is captured by Cu and deposited within CFF@Cu from bottom to top, which reduces and homogenizes Zn2+ flux on Zn foil, as well as weakens and homogenizes electric field on Zn foil.

Abstract
Regulating the crystallographic texture of the zinc (Zn) metal anode is promising to promote Zn reversibility in aqueous electrolytes, but the direct fabrication of specific textured Zn still remains challenging. Herein, we report a facile iodide ion (I-)-assisted electrodeposition strategy that can scalably fabricate highly (002) crystal plane-textured Zn metal anode (H-(002)-Zn). Theoretical and experimental characterizations demonstrate that the presence of I- additives can significantly elevate the growth rate of the Zn (100) plane, homogenize the Zn nucleation, and promote the plating kinetics, thus enabling the uniform H-(002)-Zn electrodeposition. Taking the electrolytic cell with the conventional ZnSO4-based electrolyte and commercial Cu substrate as a model system, the Zn texture gradually transforms from (101) to (002) as the increase of NaI additive concentration. In the optimized 1 M ZnSO4 + 0.8 M NaI electrolyte, the as-prepared H-(002)-Zn features a compact structure and an ultrahigh intensity ratio of (002) to (101) signal without containing the (100) signal. The free-standing H-(002)-Zn electrode manifests stronger resistance to interfacial side reactions than the conventional (101)-textured Zn electrode, thus delivering a high efficiency of 99.88% over 400 cycles and ultralong cycling lifespan over 6700 h (>9 months at 1 mA cm-2) and assuring the stable operation of full Zn batteries. This work will enlighten the efficient electrosynthesis of high-performance Zn anodes for practical aqueous Zn batteries.

Abstract
Side reactions caused by highly active water molecules, including severe corrosion, hydrogen evolution, and dendrite growth, are impediments to the advancement of aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs). Here, inspired by the pivotal role of plant fibers to prevent dehydration in nature, we designed a unique water-retaining plant fiber (WRPF) separator with strong hygroscopic ability to adsorb and trap water molecules. Elaborated theoretical and experimental characterizations prove that high-activity water could be sequestered by a WRPF separator, alleviating water-induced side reactions and accelerating the desolvation of hydrate Zn2+. Prominently, reversible Zn plating and stripping could be realized in Zn//Cu batteries. Even with elevated cathodic mass loading (21.94 mg cm-2), the Zn//VS2 full cell delivers high areal capacity 3.3 mAh cm-2 and well-maintained stability. The present study offers a versatile design strategy for separators using nature-inspired materials, aiming to address the challenging issue of "water" and achieve ultrastable interfacial chemistry of Zn anode.

Abstract
Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) offer promising prospects for large-scale energy storage due to their inherent abundance and safety features. However, the growth of zinc dendrites remains a primary obstacle to the practical industrialization of AZIBs, especially under harsh conditions of high current densities and elevated temperatures. To address this issue, a Janus separator with an exceptionally ultrathin thickness of 29 µm is developed. This Janus separator features the bacterial cellulose (BC) layer on one side and Ag nanowires/bacterial cellulose (AgNWs/BC) layer on the other side. High zincophilic property and excellent electric/thermal conductivity of AgNWs make them ideal for serving as an ion pump to accelerate Zn2+ transport in the electrolyte, resulting in greatly improved Zn2+ conductivity, deposition of homogeneous Zn nuclei, and dendrite-free Zn. Consequently, the Zn||Zn symmetrical cells with the Janus separator exhibit a stable cycle life of over 1000 h under 80 mA cm-2 and are sustained for over 600 h at 10 mA cm-2 under 50 °C. Further, the Janus separator enables excellent cycling stability in AZIBs, aqueous zinc-ion capacitors (AZICs), and scaled-up flexible soft-packaged batteries. This study demonstrates the potential of functional separators in promoting the application of aqueous zinc batteries, particularly under harsh conditions.

Abstract
Zn electrodeposition mechanism is a cornerstone of dendritic issue exploration in Zn-ion battery. Investigation of the inherent early-stage Zn plating kinetics and its dependence on the reactivity of anode-electrolyte interphase is crucial. Herein, the kinetic evolution of Zn plating on three characteristic substrates is quantified: fresh Zn, commercial Zn foil, and Zn foil with spontaneously generated solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI). Using scanning electrochemical microscopy analysis, the original interphase regulation of Zn deposit orientation and the competitive reaction between Zn deposition and SEI passivation are studied in situ. Furthermore, the SEI layer can suppress the dendrite growth at initial state by guiding the horizontal alignment of Zn flakes and promote Zn plating process. This approach provided a feasible consideration into interphase engineering of various metal anodes.

Abstract
Functional porous coating on zinc electrode is emerging as a powerful ionic sieve to suppress dendrite growth and side reactions, thereby improving highly reversible aqueous zinc ion batteries. However, the ultrafast charge rate is limited by the substantial cation transmission strongly associated with dehydration efficiency. Here, we unveil the entire dynamic process of solvated Zn2+ ions' continuous dehydration from electrolyte across the MOF-electrolyte interface into channels with the aid of molecular simulations, taking zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-7 as proof-of-concept. The moderate concentration of 2 M ZnSO4 electrolyte being advantageous over other concentrations possesses the homogeneous water-mediated ion pairing distribution, resulting in the lowest dehydration energy, which elucidates the molecular mechanism underlying such concentration adopted by numerous experimental studies. Furthermore, we show that modifying linkers on the ZIF-7 surface with hydrophilic groups such as -OH or -NH2 can weaken the solvation shell of Zn2+ ions to lower the dehydration free energy by approximately 1 eV, and may improve the electrical conductivity of MOF. These results shed light on the ions delivery mechanism and pave way to achieve long-term stable zinc anodes at high capacities through atomic-scale modification of functional porous materials.

Abstract
Zn metal has been extensively utilized as an anode in aqueous zinc-ion batteries attributed to its affordable cost and superior theoretical capacity. Nevertheless, the presence of dendrites and undesirable side reactions poses challenges to its widespread commercialization. To address these issues, herein, a surface coating composed of hydroxyapatite (HAP) was developed on the Zn anode to create an artificial solid electrolyte interphase. After the application of a hydroxyapatite layer, dendrites and corrosion of the Zn anode are sufficiently inhibited. Furthermore, the hydroxyapatite interphase with a low ionic diffusion barrier enables fast anodic redox kinetics. Consequently, the Zn@HAP symmetric cell possesses a durable lifespan over 2000 h at 1 mA cm-2, while maintaining minimal polarization. Moreover, the practical feasibilities of the Zn@HAP anode are also manifested in full batteries combined with MnO2 cathodes, exhibiting exceptional cycling performance up to 500 cycles at 1 A g-1 and excellent rate capability with a retention of 109 mAh g-1 at 5 A g-1.

Abstract
The instability of zinc metal anode caused by zinc dendrite growth and severe parasitic reactions has significantly restricted the extensive application of rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (RAZBs). Herein, based on the strategy of dynamic hard domains, we develop an ion-conductive supramolecular elastomer consisting of Zn salts and the polyurethane-urea-polypropylene glycol polymer skeleton. This elastomer combines high mechanical strength, high ionic conductivity, decent hydrophobicity, and high adhesion to stabilize the electrode-electrolyte interface. In the elastomer system, this elastomer can dynamically adapt to the volume changes of Zn anodes during repeated zinc plating/stripping processes through the reversible dissociation/reassociation of hierarchical hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) formed by the polar groups of urea and urethane moieties. Meanwhile, the coordination of Zn2+ with soft polypropylene glycol (PPG) segments contributes to fast ion transport. This hydrophobic elastomer can also effectively inhibit water-induced corrosion by shielding the active Zn metal from the aqueous electrolyte. Based on the above synergies, the surface-modified anode shows excellent cycling stability above 550 h at a high current density of 5 mA cm-2 and a capacity of 2.5 mAh cm-2. Moreover, the assembled Zn//MnO2 full cell also displayed an enhanced electrochemical performance. This work provides inspiration for the design of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layers in aqueous battery chemistry to accelerate the application of RAZBs.

Abstract
Zinc anode-based aqueous batteries have attracted considerable interest for large-scale energy storage and wearable devices. Unfortunately, the formation of Zn dendrite, parasitic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and irreversible by-products, seriously restrict their practical applications. Herein, a series of compact and uniform metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) films with precisely controlled thickness (150-600 nm) are constructed by a pre-oxide gas deposition (POGD) method on Zn foil. Under the protection of MOF layer with optimum thickness, the corrosion of zinc, the side reaction of hydrogen evolution, and the growth of dendrites on the zinc surface are suppressed. The symmetric cell based on Zn@ZIF-8 anode exhibits exceptional cyclicality for over 1100 h with low voltage hysteresis of≈38 mV at 1 mA cm-2 . Even at current densities of 50 mA cm-2 with an area capacity of 50 mAh cm-2 (85% Zn utilization), the electrode can keep cycling for >100 h. Besides, this Zn@ZIF-8 anode also delivers a high average CE of 99.4% at 1 mA cm-2 . Moreover, a rechargeable Zn ion battery is fabricated based on the Zn@ZIF-8 anode and MnO2 cathode, which presents an exceptionally long lifespan with no capacity attenuation for 1000 cycles.

Abstract
Metallic zinc electrode with a high theoretical capacity of 820 mAh g-1 is highly considered as a promising candidate for next-generation rechargeable batteries. However, the unavoidable hydrogen evolution, uncontrolled dendrite growth, and severe passivation reaction badly hinder its practical implementations. Herein, a robust polymer-alloy artificial protective layer is designed to realize dendrite-free Zn metal anode by the integration of zincophilic SnSb nanoparticles with Nafion. In comparison to the bare Zn electrode, the Nafion-SnSb coated Zn (NFSS@Zn) electrode exhibits lower nucleation energy barrier, more uniform electric field distribution and stronger anti-corrosion capability, thus availably suppressing the Zn dendrite growth and interfacial side reactions. As a consequence, the NFSS@Zn electrode exhibits a long cycle life over 1500 h at 1 mA cm-2 with an ultra-low voltage hysteresis (25 mV). Meanwhile, when paired with a MnO2 cathode, the as-prepared full cell also demonstrates stable performance for 1000 cycles at 3 A g-1 . This work provides an inspired approach to boost the performance of Zn anodes.

Abstract
Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are receiving widespread attention due to their abundant resources, low material cost, and high safety. However, the susceptibility of Zn metal anodes to corrosion and hydrogen evolution limits their further practical applications. Replacing Zn metal with intercalation-type anode material and constructing rocking-chair-type batteries could be an effective way to significantly prolong the cycle life of AZIBs. Herein, we present copper selenide with different crystal phase structures through a facile redox reaction as an anode for AZIBs. By comparing and analyzing different copper selenide phases, it is found that the cubic Cu2-xSe shows superior structural stability and highly reversible Zn2+ storage. Theoretical calculation results further demonstrate that the cubic Cu2-xSe possesses an increased electrical conductivity, higher Zn2+ adsorption energy, and reduced diffusion barrier, thereby promoting the storage reversibility and (de)intercalation kinetics of the Zn2+ ion. Thus, the Cu2-xSe anode delivers a long-term service life of over 15 000 cycles and impressive cumulative capacity. Furthermore, the full-cells assembled with the MnO2/CNT cathode operate stably for over 1500 cycles at 6 mA cm-2 at a negative/positive (N/P) capacity ratio of ∼1.53. This work provides a more ideal Zn-metal-free anode, which helps to push the practical applications of AZIBs.

Abstract
Nanocomposites that combine porous materials and a continuous conductive skeleton as a sulfur host can improve the performance of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Herein, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) anchoring small-size (~40 nm) N-doped porous carbon polyhedrons (S-NCPs/CNTs) are designed and synthesized via annealing the precursor of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 grown in situ on CNTs (ZIF-8/CNTs). In the nanocomposite, the S-NCPs serve as an efficient host for immobilizing polysulfides through physical adsorption and chemical bonding, while the interleaved CNT networks offer an efficient charge transport environment. Moreover, the S-NCP/CNT composite with great features of a large specific surface area, high pore volume, and short electronic/ion diffusion depth not only demonstrates a high trapping capacity for soluble lithium polysulfides but also offers an efficient charge/mass transport environment, and an effective buffering of volume changes during charge and discharge. As a result, the Li-S batteries based on a S/S-NCP/CNT cathode deliver a high initial capacity of 1213.8 mAh g-1 at a current rate of 0.2 C and a substantial capacity of 1114.2 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles, corresponding to a high-capacity retention of 91.7%. This approach provides a practical research direction for the design of MOF-derived carbon materials in the application of high-performance Li-S batteries.

Abstract
Quasi solid zinc batteries (QSZBs) based on gel electrolyte have performed as a significant application prospect as advanced high energy density electrochemical storage devices with safety, low cost, eco-friendliness, and flexibility. While, the practical application of QSZBs was enormously restricted by low ionic conductivity and poor strength of pure gel electrolyte. Here, in order to activate the zinc ion conduction in gel electrolyte, the kinds of inorganic fillers constituting the composite electrolyte was investigated. The theoretical study was also revealed by density functional theory to have deep insight into the mechanism. In particular, appropriate filler amount (ZnO#20) can make a noteworthy ion conductivity elevation (1.3 × 10-3 S cm-1) which is much better than the control sample (2.0 × 10-4 S cm-1) at -20 °C. As a result, the symmetric cell with ZnO#20 can achieve a long-term cycling life of over 1500 h. Moreover, the pouch cell coupled with vanadium pentoxide is assembled, and corresponding versatility is also identified with twisting, refrigeration (-20 °C) and cutting.
