Abstract
Herein, we report the palladium-catalyzed borylation of aryl halides (iodides or bromides) under base-free conditions utilizing a commercially available Lewis acidic mediator, Zn(OTf)2. Under these conditions, an array of electronically and functional-group-diverse aryl iodides and bromides undergo borylation to afford the corresponding aryl boronic esters in ≤82% isolated yields. Mechanistic investigations are consistent with Zn(OTf)2 enabling transmetalation between a cationic Pd(II)-Ar intermediate and B2pin2 via halide abstraction. Furthermore, stabilization of the cationic [ArPdII]+ complex with added [BArF4]- significantly improves the reaction efficiency with electron-poor arenes.

Abstract
The indispensability of a base in Suzuki-Miyaura coupling (SMC) employing organoboronic acids/esters is well recognized, which occasionally induces competitive protodeborylation in organoboron reagents. This phenomenon is particularly pronounced in fluorine-substituted aryl and heteroaryl boron compounds. Here, we show that direct SMC of naphthalene-1,8-diaminato (dan)-substituted aryl boron compounds, Ar-B(dan), characterized by its remarkable stability toward protodeborylation due to their diminished boron-Lewis acidity, occurs utilizing a weak base in conjunction with a palladium/copper cooperative catalyst system. The approach delineated in this study enables the efficient incorporation of various perfluoroaryl- and heteroaryl-B(dan) reagents, while maintaining high functional group tolerance. Furthermore, the inherent inertness of the B(dan) moiety allowed sequential cross-coupling, where other metallic moieties chemoselectively undergo the reaction, thus leading to the concise, protection-free synthesis of oligoarenes. Our results provide a potent approach to a delicate dilemma between a protodeborylation-resistant property and SMC activity intimately linked to boron-Lewis acidity.

Abstract
The development of highly reducing photocatalysts to functionalize arenes via the generation of reactive aryl radicals under mild and environmentally benign reaction conditions has emerged as a noteworthy approach in the realm of organic synthesis. Herein, we report a readily synthesized series of novel naphthocarbazole derivatives (NCs) as organo-photocatalysts, which, upon irradiation under 390 nm light, acquire high reducing power to catalyze several reductive transformations. The promising properties revealed by in depth photophysical and electrochemical studies ( = -1.9 V to -2.07 V vs. SCE, τ = 5.59 to 7.12 ns) demonstrate NCs to be versatile catalysts, and notably, rational variation of the substituents (NC1-NC6) modulates their success as efficient photoreductants. Detailed DFT calculations of the frontier MO diagrams and energy levels revealed them to be non-donor-acceptor type molecular scaffolds. The applicability of the NCs as catalysts was demonstrated in reductive dehalogenative borylation, phosphorylation, and dehydrohalide intramolecular C-C coupling reactions, as well as the dimerization of carbonyls and imines. Visible-light-irradiated selective reductive desulfonylation from heteroaromatics and peptides further enhances their synthetic utility.

Abstract
The reaction of [Rh{(E)-CF[double bond, length as m-dash]CHCF3}(PEt3)3] with Zn(CH3)2 results in the methylation of the alkenyl ligand to give [Rh{(E/Z)-C(CH3)[double bond, length as m-dash]CHCF3}(PEt3)3]. Variable temperature NMR studies allowed the identification of a heterobinuclear rhodium-zinc complex as an intermediate, for which the structure [Rh(CH3)(ZnCH3){(Z)-C(CH3)[double bond, length as m-dash]CHCF3}(PEt3)2] is proposed. Based on these stoichiometric reactions, unique Negishi-type catalytic cross-coupling reactions of fluorinated propenes by consecutive C-H and C-F bond activation steps at room temperature were developed. The C-H bond activation steps provide a fluorinated ligand at Rh and deliver the fluorinated product, whereas the C-F bond activation and C-C coupling occur via outer-sphere nucleophilic attack at the fluorinated alkenyl ligand.

Abstract
The synthesis of organic compounds efficiently via fewer steps but in higher yields is desirable as this reduces energy and reagent use, waste production, and thus environmental impact as well as cost. The reactivity of C-H bonds ortho to fluorine substituents in (poly)fluoroarenes with metal centers is enhanced relative to meta and para positions. Thus, direct C-H functionalization of (poly)fluoroarenes without prefunctionalization is becoming a significant area of research in organic chemistry. Novel and selective methodologies to functionalize (poly)fluorinated arenes by taking advantage of the reactivity of C-H bonds ortho to C-F bonds are continuously being developed. This review summarizes the reasons for the enhanced reactivity and the consequent developments in the synthesis of valuable (poly)fluoroarene-containing organic compounds.

Abstract
We report the synergistic combination of Pd(OAc)2 and Ag2O for the oxidative C-H arylation of (poly)fluoroarenes with aryl pinacol boronates (Ar-Bpin) in DMF as the solvent. This procedure can be conducted easily in air, and without using additional ligands, to afford the fluorinated unsymmetrical biaryl products in up to 98 % yield. Experimental studies suggest that the formation of [PdL2(C6F5)2] in DMF as coordinating solvent does not take place under the reaction conditions as it is stable to reductive elimination and thus would deactivate the catalyst. Thus, the intermediate [Pd(DMF)2(ArF)(Ar)] must be formed selectively to give desired arylation products. DFT calculations predict a low barrier (5.87 kcal/mol) for the concerted metalation deprotonation (CMD) process between C6F5H and the Pd(II) species formed after transmetalation between the Pd(II)X2 complex and aryl-Bpin which forms a Pd-Arrich species. Thus a Pd(Arrich)(Arpoor) complex is generated selectively which undergoes reductive elimination to generate the unsymmetrical biaryl product.

Abstract
A green and practical protocol of defluoroborylation of polyfluoroarenes with stable and readily accessible NHC-borane was developed, using 1,2-diphenyldisulfane as a hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) and single electron transfer (SET) reagent precursor under visible-light irradiation, leading to the concise formation of value-added fluorinated organoboron scaffolds. Mechanism studies revealed the method underwent a boryl radical addition reaction with polyfluoroarene, followed by successive single electron transfer pathways and defluorination of the C-F bond to offer the targeted product. This unprecedented platform relies on 1,2-diphenyldisulfane and base without using expensive photocatalysts, highlighting the methodology has promising application value to prepare borylated polyfluoroarene compounds.

Abstract
The synthesis of the first terminal mono-boryl complexes of nickel, which are not stabilized by a pincer ligand, is reported. The reaction of the nickel bis-boryl complex cis-[Ni(i Pr2 ImMe )2 (Bcat)2 ] 1 (cat=1,2-O2 C6 H4 ) with the small donor ligand PMe3 led to a complete ligand exchange at nickel with reductive elimination of B2 cat2 and formation of the bis-NHC adduct [B2 cat2 ⋅ (i Pr2 ImMe )2 ] 3 and [Ni(PMe3 )4 ] 2 as the metal-containing species. Electrophilic attack of MeI on complex 1 or ligand dismutation of 1 with trans-[Ni(i Pr2 ImMe )2 Br2 ] led to loss of only one boryl ligand of 1 and afforded the nickel mono-boryl complexes trans-[Ni(i Pr2 ImMe )2 (Bcat)Br] 4 a and trans-[Ni(i Pr2 ImMe )2 (Bcat)I] 4 b.

Abstract
The fluorinated building block strategy and the direct fluorination strategy are of great importance for the synthesis of new fluorinated molecules. These strategies complement each other and can be combined to develop a new methodology for the construction of a wide variety of fascinating organofluorine compounds. In our opinion, the versatile building blocks used in this method should satisfy the following conditions: 1) readily prepared from commercially available reagents; 2) easy to handle; 3) storage under ordinary conditions without noticeable decomposition; 4) wide applicability. Based on the aforementioned requirements, we focused on the use of vinyl sulfonium salts. This brief review describes the synthesis of five types of fluorinated vinyl sulfonium salts and their reactions. Especially, we featured typical fluorinated groups containing trifluoromethyl (CF3 ), difluoromethyl (CF2 H), monofluoromethyl (CFH2 ), monofluoro (F) or β-bromotetrafluoroethyl (BrCF2 CF2 ) moieties in combination with vinyl sulfonium salts.

Abstract
Organocatalytic strategies for the direct activation of hydroxy-containing compounds have paled in comparison to those applicable to carbonyl compounds. To this end, boronic acids have emerged as valuable catalysts for the functionalization of hydroxy groups in a mild and selective fashion. Distinct modes of activation in boronic acid-catalyzed transformations are often accomplished by vastly different catalytic species, complicating the design of broadly applicable catalyst classes. Herein, we report the use of benzoxazaborine as a general scaffold for the development of structurally related yet mechanistically divergent catalysts for the direct nucleophilic and electrophilic activation of alcohols under ambient conditions. The utility of these catalysts is demonstrated in the monophosphorylation of vicinal diols and the reductive deoxygenation of benzylic alcohols and ketones respectively. Mechanistic studies of both processes reveal the contrasting nature of key tetravalent boron intermediates in the two catalytic manifolds.

Abstract
The first nickel bis-boryl complexes cis-[Ni( i Pr2ImMe)2(Bcat)2], cis-[Ni( i Pr2ImMe)2(Bpin)2] and cis-[Ni( i Pr2ImMe)2(Beg)2] are reported, which were prepared via the reaction of a source of [Ni( i Pr2ImMe)2] with the diboron(4) compounds B2cat2, B2pin2 and B2eg2 ( i Pr2ImMe = 1,3-di-iso-propyl-4,5-dimethylimidazolin-2-ylidene; B2cat2 = bis(catecholato)diboron; B2pin2 = bis(pinacolato)diboron; B2eg2 = bis(ethylene glycolato)diboron). X-ray diffraction and DFT calculations strongly suggest that a delocalized, multicenter bonding scheme dictates the bonding situation of the NiB2 moiety in these square planar complexes, reminiscent of the bonding situation of "non-classical" H2 complexes. [Ni( i Pr2ImMe)2] also efficiently catalyzes the diboration of alkynes using B2cat2 as the boron source under mild conditions. In contrast to the known platinum-catalyzed diboration, the nickel system follows a different mechanistic pathway, which not only provides the 1,2-borylation product in excellent yields, but also provides an efficient approach to other products such as C-C coupled borylation products or rare tetra-borylated compounds. The mechanism of the nickel-catalyzed alkyne borylation was examined by means of stoichiometric reactions and DFT calculations. Oxidative addition of the diboron reagent to nickel is not dominant; the first steps of the catalytic cycle are coordination of the alkyne to [Ni( i Pr2ImMe)2] and subsequent borylation at the coordinated and, thus, activated alkyne to yield complexes of the type [Ni(NHC)2(η2-cis-(Bcat)(R)C[double bond, length as m-dash]C(R)(Bcat))], exemplified by the isolation and structural characterization of [Ni( i Pr2ImMe)2(η2-cis-(Bcat)(Me)C[double bond, length as m-dash]C(Me)(Bcat))] and [Ni( i Pr2ImMe)2(η2-cis-(Bcat)(H7C3)C[double bond, length as m-dash]C(C3H7)(Bcat))].

Abstract
A catalytic selective C-F bond alkylation method for polyfluoroarene with glycinates and derivatives in the presence of a DavePhos-ligated Rh catalyst was developed. This method avoids the preactivation of alkylating reagents and provides an efficient and straightforward route to synthesize a series of polyfluoroaryl amino acids via C(sp3)-H functionalization. This reaction proceeds under mild conditions and exhibits high reactivity and excellent chemoselectivities. Meanwhile, the synthetic potential of this method was demonstrated by gram-scale synthesis, and further transformations proved the application value of the products as well.

Abstract
Aryl borates lie at the heart of carbon-carbon bond couplings, and they are widely applied to the synthesis of functional materials, pharmaceutical compounds, and natural products. Currently, synthetic methods for aryl borates are mostly limited to metal-catalyzed routes, and nonmetallic strategies remain comparatively underdeveloped. Herein, we report a mild, scalable, visible-light-induced cross-coupling between aryl dibenzothiophenium triflate salts and bis(catecholato)-diboron for the construction of C-B bonds in the absence of base, transition metal-ligand complex, or photoredox catalyst. Mechanistic studies reveal that this transformation is achieved through an electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complex activation in the absence of a catalyst. The mild reaction conditions allow the preparation of aromatic borates in good yields with excellent functional group tolerance. This photochemical protocol was also successfully applied to the late-stage modification of natural products and the synthesis of a drug intermediate, greatly demonstrating broadened utility.

Abstract
This study describes the solid-state palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling between aryl halides and bis(pinacolato)diboron using ball milling. The reactions were completed within 10 min for most aryl halides to afford a variety of synthetically useful arylboronates in high yields. Notably, all experimental operations could be performed in air, and did not require the use of large amounts of dry and degassed organic solvents. The utility of this method was further demonstrated by gram-scale synthesis under solvent-free, mechanochemical conditions.

Abstract
This work describes the first preparation and application of primary trifluoroborate-iminiums (pTIMs) as a new, easily accessible and valuable class of organoboron derivatives. An array of structurally diverse pTIMs was prepared from potassium acyltrifluoroborates in excellent yields. Highly efficient and enantioselective [(R,R)-TethTsDpen-RuCl] complex-catalyzed hydrogenation of pTIMs provided direct access to chiral primary trifluoroborate-ammoniums (pTAMs). Moreover, facile synthesis of a series of structurally diverse chiral α-aminoboronic acids from chiral pTAMs was accomplished through novel, operationally simple and efficient conversion using hexamethyldisiloxane/aqueous HCl. Using no chromatography at any point, this work allowed easy access to chiral α-aminoboronic acids, as exemplified by the synthesis of optically pure anti-cancer drugs bortezomib and ixazomib.

Abstract
Two challenging but rewarding topics in chemical synthesis are C-F-bond activation and the development of B-centered nucleophiles. We have now tackled both subjects simultaneously by forming aryl-B bonds via SNAr-type reactions on fluorobenzenes under mild conditions using Na2[FluBBFlu], Li2[HBFlu], and Li2[Me2DBA] (BFlu = 9-borafluorenyl, Me2DBA = 9,10-dimethyl-9,10-dihydro-9,10-diboraanthracene).

Abstract
Organoboron reagents represent a unique class of compounds because of their utility in modern synthetic organic chemistry, often affording unprecedented reactivity. The transformation of the carbon-boron bond into a carbon-X (X = C, N, and O) bond in a stereocontrolled fashion has become invaluable in medicinal chemistry, agrochemistry, and natural products chemistry as well as materials science. Over the past decade, first-row d-block transition metals have become increasingly widely used as catalysts for the formation of a carbon-boron bond, a transformation traditionally catalyzed by expensive precious metals. This recent focus on alternative transition metals has enabled growth in fundamental methods in organoboron chemistry. This review surveys the current state-of-the-art in the use of first-row d-block element-based catalysts for the formation of carbon-boron bonds.

Abstract
The kinetics and mechanism of the base-catalyzed hydrolysis (ArB(OR)2 → ArB(OH)2) and protodeboronation (ArB(OR)2 → ArH) of a series of boronic esters, encompassing eight different polyols and 10 polyfluoroaryl and heteroaryl moieties, have been investigated by in situ and stopped-flow NMR spectroscopy (19F, 1H, and 11B), pH-rate dependence, isotope entrainment, 2H KIEs, and KS-DFT computations. The study reveals the phenomenological stability of boronic esters under basic aqueous-organic conditions to be highly nuanced. In contrast to common assumption, esterification does not necessarily impart greater stability compared to the corresponding boronic acid. Moreover, hydrolysis of the ester to the boronic acid can be a dominant component of the overall protodeboronation process, augmented by self-, auto-, and oxidative (phenolic) catalysis when the pH is close to the pKa of the boronic acid/ester.

Abstract
A novel protocol for the transition metal-free 1,2-addition of polyfluoroaryl boronate esters to aldehydes and ketones is reported, which provides secondary alcohols, tertiary alcohols, and ketones. Control experiments and DFT calculations indicate that both the ortho-F substituents on the polyfluorophenyl boronates and the counterion K+ in the carbonate base are critical. The distinguishing features of this procedure include the employment of commercially available starting materials and the broad scope of the reaction with a wide variety of carbonyl compounds giving moderate to excellent yields. Intriguing structural features involving O-H⋅⋅⋅O and O-H⋅⋅⋅N hydrogen bonding, as well as arene-perfluoroarene interactions, in this series of racemic polyfluoroaryl carbinols have also been addressed.

Abstract
SN Ar has been used to synthesize various functionalized derivatives of pentafluorobenzenes which are highly specific at the para position; and consequently are ideal for building calamitic (rod-like) liquid crystalline molecular systems. Here, we display the effectiveness of SN Ar chemistry as a convenient method toward the synthesis of fluorescent liquid crystalline perfluorinated comprising ethers and thioethers in excellent yields and high purity. In the current work, we describe the synthesis, self-assembly, and mesogenic properties of new perfluorinated para-terphenyls bearing various para-substituted alkoxy and thioalkoxy chains. The terphenyl core was prepared using Cu(I) (or Cu(I)/phenanthroline)-catalyzed decarboxylative carbon-carbon (or carbon-oxygen [sulfur]) cross-coupling from the analogous aromatic iodide and fluorobenzoate potassium salt. The molecular structures of the prepared perfluorinated terphenyls were demonstrated with 1 H, 13 C, and 19 F NMR, as well as FT-IR and X-ray crystallography. The liquid crystalline properties and mesogenic phases were characterized with differential scanning calorimetry and high-resolution polarized optical microscope. Both UV-visible absorbance and emission spectra demonstrated solvatochromism. Supramolecular self-assembly of the generated perfluorinated para-terphenyls was monitored by van der Waals and π-π stacking interaction forces. The creation of nanofibrous architectures was monitored by scanning electron microscopy.

Abstract
Metal-catalyzed trans-1,2-hydrosilylations and hydroborations of terminal alkynes that generate synthetically valuable (Z)-alkenylsilanes and (Z)-alkenylboranes remain challenging due to the (E)-selective nature of the reactions and the formation of the thermodynamically unfavorable (Z)-isomer. The development of new, efficient catalytic systems for the (Z)-selective hydrosilylation and hydroboration of terminal alkynes is thus highly desirable from a fundamental perspective as it would deepen our understanding of the metal-catalyzed (Z)-selective hydrosilylation and hydroboration of terminal alkynes. This personal account describes our research for developing a ruthenium complex that can efficiently catalyze the hydrosilylation and hydroboration of terminal alkynes, and for exploring the factors controlling (Z)-selectivity of the reactions. Our effort into the activation of B-protected boronic acids, R-B(dan) (dan=naphthalene-1,8-diaminato), that was believed not to participate in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling, is also discussed.

Abstract
This article describes a sequential Ir/Cu-mediated process for the meta-selective C-H radiofluorination of (hetero)arene substrates. In the first step, Ir-catalyzed C(sp2)-H borylation affords (hetero)aryl pinacolboronate (BPin) esters. The intermediate organoboronates are then directly subjected to copper-mediated radiofluorination with [18F]tetrabutylammonium fluoride to afford fluorine-18 labeled (hetero)arenes in high radiochemical yield and radiochemical purity. This entire process is performed on a benchtop without Schlenk or glovebox techniques and circumvents the need to isolate (hetero)aryl boronate esters. The reaction was automated on a TracerLab FXFN module with 1,3-dimethoxybenzene and a meta-tyrosine derivative. The products, [18F]1-fluoro-3,5-dimethoxybenzene and an 18F-labeled meta-tyrosine derivative, were obtained in 37 ± 5% isolated radiochemical yield and >99% radiochemical purity and 25% isolated radiochemical yield and 99% radiochemical purity, and 0.52 Ci/μmol (19.24 GBq/μmol) molar activity (Am), respectively.
