Abstract
Heteroatom-adjacent C(sp3) radical cyclization of N-arylacrylamides provides a straightforward pathway to synthesize valuable 3-functionalized oxindoles. Traditional cyclization reactions normally require harsh conditions or transition-metal catalysts. Here, we developed a metal-free, diversity-oriented synthesis of 3-functionalized oxindoles via photochemically induced selective cleavage of C(sp3)-H bonds. A variety of 3-substituted oxindoles with functionalities such as ethers, polyhalogens, benzyl, and formyl groups can be obtained by a rational design. This strategy is characterized by its simple operation and mild conditions, aligning well with the developmental requirements for sustainable chemistry. The gram-scale continuous-flow synthesis and efficient construction of bioactive molecules highlight its practical utility.

Abstract
Poly(heptazine imide) (PHI) salts, as crystalline carbon nitrides, exhibit high photocatalytic activity and are being extensively researched, but its photochemical instability has not drawn researchers' attention yet. Herein, sodium PHI (PHI-Na) ultrathin nanosheets with increased crystallinity, synthesized by enhancing contact of melamine with NaCl functioning as a structure-induction agent and hard template, exhibits improved photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity, but low photochemical stability, owing to Na+ loss in the photocatalytic process, which, interestingly, can be enhanced by the common ion effect, e.g., addition of NaCl that is also able to remarkably increase the photoactivity with the apparent quantum yield at 420 nm reaching 41.5 %. This work aims at attracting research peers' attention to photochemical instability of PHI salts and provides a way to enhance their crystallinity.

Abstract
Deuterogenation of unsaturated organic compounds is an attractive route for installing C(sp3)-D bonds, but the existing methods typically use expensive D2 and introduce only two deuterium atoms per unsaturation. Herein we report the hydrogenative perdeuteration of alkenes using readily available H2 and D2O instead of D2, catalysed by an acridanide-based ruthenium pincer complex and resulting in the incorporation of up to 4.9 D atoms per C=C double bond in a single synthetic step. Importantly, adding a catalytic amount of thiol, which serves as a transient cooperative ligand, ensures the incorporation of deuterium rather than protium by balancing the rates of two sequential deuteration processes. The current method opens an avenue for installing perdeuteroalkyl groups at specific sites from widely available alkenes under mild conditions.

Abstract
The development of sustainable and efficient C1 substitution methods is of central interest for organic synthesis and pharmaceuticals production, the methylation motifs bound to a carbon, nitrogen, or oxygen atom widely exist in natural products and top-selling drugs. In the past decades, a number of methods involving green and inexpensive methanol have already been disclosed to replace industrial hazardous and waste-generating C1 source. Among the various efforts, photochemical strategy is considered as a "renewable" alternative that shows great potential to selectively activate methanol to achieve a series of C1 substitutions at mild conditions, typically C/N-methylation, methoxylation, hydroxymethylation, and formylation. Herein the recent advances in selective transformation of methanol to various C1 functional groups via well-designed photochemical systems involving different types of catalysts or not is systematically reviewed. Both the mechanism and corresponding photocatalytic system were discussed and classified on specific methanol activation models. Finally, the major challenges and perspectives are proposed.

Abstract
Metal-free polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) materials are at the forefront of photocatalytic applications. Nevertheless, the overall functionality and performance of bulk PCN are limited by rapid charge recombination, high chemical inertness, and inadequate surface-active sites. To address these, here, we employed potassium molten salts (K+X-, where X- is Cl-, Br-, and I-) as a template for the in situ generation of surface reactive sites in thermal pyrolyzed PCN. Theoretical calculations imply that addition of KX salts to PCN-forming monomers causes halogen ions to be doped into C or N sites of PCN with a relative trend of halogen ion doping being Cl < Br < I. The experimental results show that reconstructing C and N sites in PCN develops newer reactive sites that are beneficial for surface catalysis. Interestingly, the photocatalytic H2O2 generation rate of KBr-modified PCN was 199.0 μmol h-1, about three times that of bulk PCN. Owing to the simple and straightforward approach, we expect molten salt-assisted synthesis to have wide exploration in modifying PCN photocatalytic activity.

Abstract
Graphitic carbon nitride (GCN), as a promising photocatalyst, has been intensely investigated in the photocatalytic fields, but its performance is still unsatisfactory. To date, metal ion doping has been proven to be an effective modification method to improve the photocatalytic activity of GCN. More importantly, comprehensive understanding of the doping mechanism will be of benefit to synthesize efficient GCN based photocatalysts. In this work, K+-doped GCN samples were prepared via heating the mixture of the preheated melamine and a certain amount of KCl at different synthetic temperatures. XRD and Raman characterization studies indicated that the introduction of K+ could improve its crystallinity at higher temperature but reduce its crystallinity at lower temperature. Moreover, FTIR and SEM-EDS measurements implied that K+ are found dominantly in the surface of the ion-doped sample prepared at lower temperature, while they are found both in the surface and bulk of the ion-doped sample prepared at higher temperature. These observations revealed that K+ distributed in the surface of the ion-doped GCN could inhibit its crystal growth, while K+ distributed inside of the ion-doped GCN could promote its crystallinity. Owing to the greater inducing effect of the bulk K+ than the disturbing effect of the surface K+, the improvement of the crystallinity for K+-doped GCN was achieved. As a result, the K+-doped GCN with higher crystallinity yielded an obviously higher H2 evolution rate than that with lower crystallinity under visible light irradiation (>420 nm). Besides, it was observed that the K+-doped GCN prepared at higher temperature exhibits significantly greater adsorption capacity for methylene blue than the K+-doped GCN prepared at lower temperature. This work would provide an insight into optimizing metal ion doped GCN with high photocatalytic activity.

Abstract
Knowledge of the photocatalytic H2-evolution mechanism is of critical importance for water splitting, and for designing active catalysts for a sustainable energy supply. In this study, we prepared plasmon Au-modified K-doped defective graphitic carbon nitride (Au/KCNx) and then applied it in photocatalytic hydrogen-production tests. The hydrogen-production rate of the Au/KCNx photocatalyst (8.85 mmol g-1 h-1) was found to be almost 104 times higher than that of Au/g-C3N4 (0.085 mmol g-1 h-1), together with an apparent quantum efficiency of 12.8% at 420 nm. It could significantly improve the photocatalytic activities of the Au/KCNx sample, which was attributed to the synergistic effects of the plasmon effect, potassium doping, and nitrogen vacancy. In addition, the Au/KCNx photocatalyst had a large surface area, which was beneficial for photogenerated carrier separation and transfer. The novel strategy proposed here is a potential new method for the development of graphitic carbon nitride photocatalysts with obviously enhanced activities.

Abstract
The photocatalytic conversion of soluble U(VI) into insoluble U(IV) is a robust strategy to harvest aqueous uranium, but remains challenging owing to the intermittent availability of solar influx and reoxidation of U(IV) without illumination. Herein, a dual platform based on K+ and cyano group co-decorated poly(heptazine imide) (K-CN-PHI) is reported that can drive persistent U(VI) extraction upon/beyond light. K-CN-PHI achieves the photocatalytic reduction of U(VI) with a reaction rate of 0.89 min-1 , being 47 times greater than that over pristine carbon nitride (PCN). This system can further be triggered by light to form long-living radicals, driving the reduction of U(VI) in the dark for over 3 d. The flexible structural K+ as counterions stabilize the electrons trapped by cyanamide groups, enabling the long lifetime of the generated radicals. The results collectively prove K-CN-PHI to be a novel and efficient photocatalyst enabling persistent U(VI) extraction around the clock, and broadening the practical applications of the photocatalytic extraction of U(VI).

Abstract
The photocatalytic conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) to high-value-added fuels is a meaningful strategy to achieve carbon neutrality and alleviate the energy crisis. However, the low efficiency, poor selectivity, and insufficient product variety greatly limit its practical applications. In this regard, conjugated organic polymeric materials including carbon nitride (g-C3N4), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) exhibit enormous potential owing to their structural diversity and functional tunability. Nevertheless, their catalytic activities are largely suppressed by the traditional amorphous or weakly crystalline structures. Therefore, constructing relevant high-crystalline materials to ameliorate their inherent drawbacks is an efficient strategy to enhance the photocatalytic performance of conjugated organic polymeric materials. In this review, the advantages of high-crystalline organic polymeric materials including reducing the concentration of defects, enhancing the built-in electric field, reducing the interlayer hydrogen bonding, and crystal plane regulation are highlighted. Furthermore, the strategies for their synthesis such as molten-salt, solid salt template, and microwave-assisted methods are comprehensively summarized, while the modification strategies including defect engineering, element doping, surface loading, and heterojunction construction are elaborated for enhancing their photocatalytic activities. Ultimately, the challenges and opportunities of high-crystalline conjugated organic polymeric materials in photocatalytic CO2 conversion are prospected to give some inspiration and guidance for researchers.

Abstract
Deuterated chemicals are becoming irreplaceable in pharmaceutical engineering, material science and synthetic chemistry. Many excellent reviews have discussed acid/base-dependent or metal-catalyzed deuteration reactions, but radical deuterations have been discussed less. With the development of radical chemistry, there has been a rapid growth in radical deuterium-labelling technology. Diverse mild, cheap and efficient strategies for deuterium atom installation have been reported, and this review summarizes the recent achievements of radical deuteration classified by the reaction types.

Abstract
A series of pyrene or pyrene-o-carborane-appendant selenoviologens (Py-SeV2+ , Py-Cb-SeV2+ ) for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and reduction of alkynes is reported. The efficient photoinduced electron transfer (PET) from electron-rich pyrene-o-carborane heterojunction (Py-Cb) with intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) characteristic to electron-deficient selenoviologen (SeV2+ ) (kET = 1.2 × 1010 s-1 ) endows the accelerating the generation of selenoviologen radical cation (SeV+• ) compared with Py-SeV2+ and other derivatives. The electrochromic/electrofluorochromic devices' (ECD and EFCD) measurements and supramolecular assembly/disassembly processes of SeV2+ and cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) results show that the PET process can be finely tuned by electrochemical and host-guest chemistry methods. By combination with Pt-NPs catalyst, the Py-Cb-SeV2+ -based system shows high-efficiency visible-light-driven HER and highly selective phenylacetylene reduction due to the efficient PET process.

Abstract
Deuterium (D) labeling is of great value in organic synthesis, pharmaceutical industry, and materials science. However, the state-of-the-art deuteration methods generally require noble metal catalysts, expensive deuterium sources, or harsh reaction conditions. Herein, noble metal-free and ultrathin ZnIn2 S4 (ZIS) is reported as an effective photocatalyst for visible light-driven reductive deuteration of carbonyls to produce deuterated alcohols using heavy water (D2 O) as the sole deuterium source. Defective two-dimensional ZIS nanosheets (D-ZIS) are prepared in a surfactant assisted bottom-up route exhibited much enhanced performance than the pristine ZIS counterpart. A systematic study is carried out to elucidate the contributing factors and it is found that the in situ surfactant modification enabled D-ZIS to expose more defect sites for charge carrier separation and active D-species generation, as well as high specific surface area, all of which are beneficial for the desirable deuteration reaction. This work highlights the great potential in developing low-cost semiconductor-based photocatalysts for organic deuteration in D2 O, circumventing expensive deuterium reagents and harsh conditions.

Abstract
Crystalline carbon nitride (CCN) with a light response up to 700 nm has been seldom reported but is significant for the artificial photocatalysis. In this study, it is proposed that, unlike acceptors, introducing donors can effectively narrow the bandgap without sacrificing the reduction ability of photogenerated electrons, which is more advantageous to photocatalytic reduction reactions. Hence, a series of heptazine-based K+ -implanted CCN (KCN) with a narrow bandgap (2.87-1.86 eV) are constructed by copolymerization of pyrimidine donors. The optimized photocatalysts can extend the light response to 700 nm and account for approximately 122- and 33-fold enhancements in H2 production (λ>500 nm) in comparison to CN and KCN, respectively. The apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) can reach 8.2 % at 500 nm and is comparable to the top-level CN- and CCN- based materials. Its photoactive wavelength has significant advantages over previously reported CCN-based photocatalysts. This method offers a universal donor bandgap engineering strategy towards photocatalytic reduction reactions.

Abstract
Booming of photocatalytic water splitting technology (PWST) opens a new avenue for the sustainable synthesis of high-value-added hydrogenated and oxidized fine chemicals, in which the design of efficient semiconductors for the in-situ and synergistic utilization of photogenerated redox centers are key roles. Herein, a porous polymeric carbon nitride (PPCN) with a crystalline backbone was constructed for visible light-induced photocatalytic hydrogen generation by photoexcited electrons, followed by in-situ utilization for olefin hydrogenation. Simultaneously, various alcohols were selectively transformed to valuable aldehydes or ketones by photoexcited holes. The porosity of PPCN provided it with a large surface area and a short transfer path for photogenerated carriers from the bulk to the surface, and the crystalline structure facilitated photogenerated charge transfer and separation, thus enhancing the overall photocatalytic performance. High reactivity and selectivity, good functionality tolerance, and broad reaction scope were achieved by this concerted photocatalysis system. The results contribute to the development of highly efficient semiconductor photocatalysts and synergistic redox reaction systems based on PWST for high-value-added fine chemical production.

Abstract
Increasing demand for deuterium-labeled organic molecules has spurred a renewed interest in selective methods for deuterium installation. Catalytic transfer deuteration and transfer hydrodeuteration are emerging as powerful techniques for the selective incorporation of deuterium into small molecules. These reactions not only obviate the use of D2 gas and pressurized reaction setups but provide new opportunities for selectively installing deuterium into small molecules. Commercial or readily synthesized deuterium donors are typically employed as easy-to-handle reagents for transfer deuteration and hydrodeuteration reactions. In this minireview, recent advances in the catalytic transfer deuteration and hydrodeuteration of alkenes and alkynes for the selective synthesis of deuterated alkanes will be discussed.

Abstract
Tandem water electrolysis for the transformation of universal feedstock to value-added chemicals integrated with hydrogen generation and in situ utilization is a promising approach to address the economic challenges of electrochemical hydrogen evolution and storage. Herein, we present the controllable electrocatalytic deuteration of halides using inexpensive and reusable heavy water (D2O) as a D-source for the preparation of valuable D-labelled chemicals and pharmaceuticals under mild conditions. This electrochemical deuteration method with high efficiency and selectivity furnishes a series of D-labelled chemicals and pharmaceuticals in high yields with excellent D-incorporation. The reaction efficiency and selectivity, that is, the precise substitution of deuterium atoms at different halogen positions, can be tuned by varying the applied voltages. The results show the great potential of green and economical electrocatalytic methods for producing value-added fine chemicals in addition to hydrogen evolution.

Abstract
Photocatalytic water splitting technology (PWST) enables the direct use of water as appealing "liquid hydrogen source" for transfer hydrogenation reactions. Currently, the development of PWST-based transfer hydrogenations is still in an embryonic stage. Previous reports generally centered on the rational utilization of the in situ generated H-source (electrons) for hydrogenations, in which photogenerated holes were quenched by sacrificial reagents. Herein, the fully-utilization of the liquid H-source and holes during water splitting is presented for photo-reductive N-alkylation of nitro-aromatic compounds. In this integrate system, H-species in situ generated from water splitting were designed for nitroarenes reduction to produce amines, while alkanols were oxidized by holes for cascade alkylating of anilines as well as the generated secondary amines. More than 50 examples achieved with a broad range scope validate the universal applicability of this mild and sustainable coupling approach. The synthetic utility of this protocol was further demonstrated by the synthesis of existing pharmaceuticals via selective N-alkylation of amines. This strategy based on the sustainable water splitting technology highlights a significant and promising route for selective synthesis of valuable N-alkylated fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals from nitroarenes and amines with water and alkanols.

Abstract
Carbon nitrides encompass a class of transition-metal-free materials possessing numerous advantages such as low cost (few Euros per gram), high chemical stability, broad tunability of redox potentials and optical bandgap, recyclability, and a high absorption coefficient (>105 cm-1 ), which make them highly attractive for application in photoredox catalysis. In this Review, we classify carbon nitrides based on their unique properties, structure, and redox potentials. We summarize recently emerging concepts in heterogeneous carbon nitride photocatalysis, with an emphasis on the synthesis of organic compounds: 1) Illumination-Driven Electron Accumulation in Semiconductors and Exploitation (IDEASE); 2) singlet-triplet intersystem crossing in carbon nitride excited states and related energy transfer; 3) architectures of flow photoreactors; and 4) dual metal/carbon nitride photocatalysis. The objective of this Review is to provide a detailed overview regarding innovative research in carbon nitride photocatalysis focusing on these topics.

Abstract
Precisely controlled deuterium labeling at specific sites of N-alkyl drugs is crucial in drug-development as over 50% of the top-selling drugs contain N-alkyl groups, in which it is very challenging to selectively replace protons with deuterium atoms. With the goal of achieving controllable isotope-labeling in N-alkylated amines, we herein rationally design photocatalytic water-splitting to furnish [H] or [D] and isotope alkanol-oxidation by photoexcited electron-hole pairs on a polymeric semiconductor. The controlled installation of N-CH3, -CDH2, -CD2H, -CD3, and -13CH3 groups into pharmaceutical amines thus has been demonstrated by tuning isotopic water and methanol. More than 50 examples with a wide range of functionalities are presented, demonstrating the universal applicability and mildness of this strategy. Gram-scale production has been realized, paving the way for the practical photosynthesis of pharmaceuticals.

Abstract
Azoxy-, azo- and amino-aromatics are among the most widely used building blocks in materials science pharmaceuticals and synthetic chemistry, but their controllable and green synthesis has not yet been well established. Herein, a facile potential-tuned electrosynthesis of azoxy-, azo- and amino-aromatics via aqueous selective reduction of nitroarene feedstocks over a CoP nanosheet cathode is developed. A series of azoxy-, azo- and amino-compounds with excellent selectivity, good functional group tolerance and high yields are produced by applying different bias input. The synthetically significant and challenging asymmetric azoxy-aromatics can be controllably synthesized in moderate to good yields. The use of water as the hydrogen source makes this strategy remarkably fascinating and promising. In addition, deuterated aromatic amines with a high deuterium content can be readily obtained by using D2O. By pairing with anodic oxidation of aliphatic amines to nitriles, synthetically useful building blocks can be simultaneously produced in a CoP||Ni2P two-electrode electrolyzer. Only 1.25 V is required to achieve a current density of 20 mA cm-2, which is much lower than that of overall water splitting (1.70 V). The paired oxidation and reduction reactions can also be driven using a 1.5 V battery to synthesize nitrile and azoxybenzene with good yields and selectivity, further emphasizing the flexibility and controllability of our method. This work paves the way for a promising approach to the green synthesis of valuable chemicals through potential-controlled electrosynthesis.
