Organic Molecular Glues to Design Three-Dimensional Cubic Nano-assemblies of Magnetic Nanoparticles

Self-assembled magnetic nanoparticles offer next-generation materials that allow harnessing of their physicochemical properties for many applications. However, how three-dimensional nanoassemblies of magnetic nanoparticles can be synthesized in one-pot synthesis without excessive postsynthesis processes is still a bottleneck. Here, we propose a panel of small organic molecules that glue nanoparticle crystallites during the growth of particles to form large nanoassembled nanoparticles (NANs). We find that both carbonyl and carboxyl functional groups, presenting in benzaldehyde and benzoic acid, respectively, are needed to anchor with metal ions, while aromatic rings are needed to create NANs through π-π stacking. When benzyl alcohol, lacking carbonyl and carboxyl groups, is employed, no NANs are formed. NANs formed by benzoic acid reveal a unique combination of high magnetization and coercivity, whereas NANs formed by benzaldehyde show the largest exchange bias reported in nanoparticles. Surprisingly, our NANs show unconventional colloidal stability due to their unique nanoporous architectures.

Adsorption on nanoparticles with surface defects: mean field and energy level approaches

In this work two theoretical approximations, the so-called theoretical approach of energy levels and an extension of the modified mean field approach (TAEL and MMFA, respectively) are applied to the study of surface decoration of modified nanostructures like crystalline nanoparticles. The surface of the nanoparticles is modified by the irreversible random deposition of defects consisting in isolated atoms. Such deposition is carried out until a certain surface density is reached, leaving the rest of the sites available for a second species to adsorb. Through the formulation of the integral equation, the theoretical approaches permit obtaining the adsorption isotherms and the compressibility of the adlayer. The main difference between the two approaches is the degree of details considered in their mathematical formulations: TAEL takes in account all the energy levels meanwhile MMFA only an average. The degree of precision and usefulness of both theories were evaluated in comparison with Monte Carlo simulations in the grand canonical assembly. Several cases were studied: attractive and repulsive lateral interactions and different fraction of defects. The effects of the nanoscale were considered for different types and sizes of nanoparticles. By calculating an integral error, we are able to affirm that TAEL reproduces all the properties of the analyzed quantities from the reference simulated curves. On the other hand, the MMFA performance is good only for a certain limited range of the parameters, however the strength is in the mathematical simplicity compared to TAEL.

Magnetic Particle Imaging: From Tracer Design to Biomedical Applications in Vasculature Abnormality

Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) is an emerging non-invasive tomographic technique based on the response of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) to oscillating drive fields at the center of a static magnetic gradient. In contrast to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which is driven by uniform magnetic fields and projects the anatomic information of the subjects, MPI directly tracks and quantifies MNPs in vivo without background signals. Moreover, it does not require radioactive tracers and has no limitations on imaging depth. This article first introduces the basic principles of MPI and important features of MNPs for imaging sensitivity, spatial resolution, and targeted biodistribution. The latest research aiming to optimize the performance of MPI tracers is reviewed based on their material composition, physical properties, and surface modifications. While the unique advantages of MPI have led to a series of promising biomedical applications, recent development of MPI in investigating vascular abnormalities in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular systems, and cancer are also discussed. Finally, recent progress and challenges in the clinical translation of MPI are discussed to provide possible directions for future research and development.

Insights into the time-course cellular effects triggered by iron oxide nanoparticles by combining proteomics with the traditional pharmacology strategy

In recent years, a number of initially approved magnetic iron oxide nanoparticle (IONP)-based nano-medicines have been withdrawn due to the obscure nano-bio effects. Therefore, there is an urgent need to study the cellular effects triggered by IONPs on cells. In this study, we investigate the time-course cellular effects on the response of RAW 264.7 cells caused by Si-IONPs via pharmacological and mass spectrometry-based proteomics techniques. Our results revealed that Si-IONPs were internalized by clathrin-mediated endocytosis within 1 hour, and gradually degraded in endolysosomes over time, which might influence autophagy, oxidative stress, innate immune response, and inflammatory response after 12 hours. Our research provides a necessary assessment of Si-IONPs for further clinical treatment.

A Low-Cost, Tabletop LOD-EPR System for Nondestructive Quantification of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles in Tissues

Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) have wide utility in applications from drug delivery to the rewarming of cryopreserved tissues. Due to the complex behavior of IONPs (e.g., uneven particle distribution and aggregation), further developments and clinical translation can be accelerated by having access to a noninvasive method for tissue IONP quantification. Currently, there is no low-cost method to nondestructively track IONPs in tissues across a wide range of concentrations. This work describes the performance of a low-cost, tabletop, longitudinally detected electron paramagnetic resonance (LOD-EPR) system to address this issue in the field of cryopreservation, which utilizes IONPs for rewarming of rat kidneys. A low-cost LOD-EPR system is realized via simultaneous transmit and receive using MHz continuous-wave transverse excitation with kHz modulation, which is longitudinally detected at the modulation frequency to provide both geometric and frequency isolation. The accuracy of LOD-EPR for IONP quantification is compared with NMR relaxometry. Solution measurements show excellent linearity (R2 > 0.99) versus Fe concentration for both measurements on EMG308 (a commercial nanoparticle), silica-coated EMG308, and PEG-coated EMG308 in water. The LOD-EPR signal intensity and NMR longitudinal relaxation rate constant (R1) of water are affected by particle coating, solution viscosity, and particle aggregation. R1 remains linear but with a reduced slope when in cryoprotective agent (CPA) solution, whereas the LOD-EPR signal is relatively insensitive to this. R1 does not correlate well with Fe concentration in rat kidney sections (R2 = 0.3487), while LOD-EPR does (R2 = 0.8276), with a linear regression closely matching that observed in solution and CPA.

Defect-Engineering by Solvent Mediated Mild Oxidation as a Tool to Induce Exchange Bias in Metal Doped Ferrites

The crystal site occupancy of different divalent ions and the induction of lattice defects represent an additional tool for modifying the intrinsic magnetic properties of spinel ferrites nanoparticles. Here, the relevance of the lattice defects is demonstrated in the appearance of exchange-bias and in the improvement of the magnetic properties of doped ferrites of 20 nm, obtained from the mild oxidation of core@shell (wüstite@ferrite) nanoparticles. Three types of nanoparticles (Fe0.95 O@Fe3 O4 , Co0.3 Fe0.7 O@Co0.8 Fe2.2 O4 and Ni0.17 Co0.21 Fe0.62 O@Ni0.4 Co0.3 Fe2.3 O4 ) are oxidized. As a result, the core@shell morphology is removed and transformed in a spinel-like nanoparticle, through a topotactic transformation. This study shows that most of the induced defects in these nanoparticles and their magnetic properties are driven by the inability of the Co(II) ions at the octahedral sites to migrate to tetrahedral sites, at the chosen mild oxidation temperature. In addition, the appearance of crystal defects and antiphase boundaries improves the magnetic properties of the starting compounds and leads to the appearance of exchange bias at room temperature. These results highlight the validity of the proposed method to impose novel magnetic characteristics in the technologically relevant class of nanomaterials such as spinel ferrites, expanding their potential exploitation in several application fields.

Size dependence of the surface spin disorder and surface anisotropy constant in ferrite nanoparticles

The magnetic properties of nanoscale magnets are greatly influenced by surface anisotropy. So far, its quantification is based on the examination of the blocking temperature shift within a series of nanoparticles of varying sizes. In this scenario, the surface anisotropy is assumed to be a particle size-independent quantity. However, there is no solid experimental proof to support this simplified picture. On the contrary, our work unravels the size-dependent magnetic morphology and surface anisotropy in highly uniform magnetic nanoparticles using small-angle polarized neutron scattering. We observed that the surface anisotropy constant does not depend on the nanoparticle's size in the range of 3-9 nm. Furthermore, our results demonstrate that the surface spins are less prone to polarization with increasing nanoparticle size. Our study thus proves the size dependence of the surface spin disorder and the surface anisotropy constant in fine nanomagnets. These findings open new routes in materials based on a controlled surface spin disorder, which is essential for future applications of nanomagnets in biomedicine and magnonics.

Ferromagnetism in Defected TMD (MoX2, X = S, Se) Monolayer and Its Sustainability under O2, O3, and H2O Gas Exposure: DFT Study

Spin-polarized density-functional theory (DFT) has been employed to study the effects of atmospheric gases on the electronic and magnetic properties of a defective transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayer, MoX₂ with X = S or Se. This study focuses on three single vacancies: (i) molybdenum "V_Mo"; (ii) chalcogenide "V_X"; and (iii) di-chalcogenide "V_X2". Five different samples of sizes ranging from 4 × 4 to 8 × 8 primitive cells (PCs) were considered in order to assess the effect of vacancy-vacancy interaction. The results showed that all defected samples were paramagnetic semiconductors, except in the case of V_Mo in MoSe₂, which yielded a magnetic moment of 3.99 μ_B that was independent of the sample size. Moreover, the samples of MoSe₂ with V_Mo and sizes of 4 × 4 and 5 × 5 PCs exhibited half-metallicity, where the spin-up state becomes conductive and is predominantly composed of dxy and dz2 orbital mixing attributed to Mo atoms located in the neighborhood of V_Mo. The requirement for the establishment of half-metallicity is confirmed to be the provision of ferromagnetic-coupling (FMC) interactions between localized magnetic moments (such as V_Mo). The critical distance for the existence of FMC is estimated to be dc≅ 16 Å, which allows small sample sizes in MoSe₂ to exhibit half-metallicity while the FMC represents the ground state. The adsorption of atmospheric gases (H₂O, O₂, O₃) can drastically change the electronic and magnetic properties, for instance, it can demolish the half-metallicity characteristics. Hence, the maintenance of half-metallicity requires keeping the samples isolated from the atmosphere. We benchmarked our theoretical results with the available data in the literature throughout our study. The conditions that govern the appearance/disappearance of half-metallicity are of great relevance for spintronic device applications.

On the angular anisotropy of the randomly averaged magnetic neutron scattering cross section of nanoparticles

The magnetic small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) cross section of dilute ensembles of uniformly magnetized and randomly oriented Stoner-Wohlfarth particles is calculated using the Landau-Lifshitz equation. The focus of this study is on the angular anisotropy of the magnetic SANS signal as it can be seen on a two-dimensional position-sensitive detector. Depending on the symmetry of the magnetic anisotropy of the particles (e.g. uniaxial, cubic), an anisotropic magnetic SANS pattern may result, even in the remanent state or at the coercive field. The case of inhomogeneously magnetized particles and the effects of a particle-size distribution and interparticle correlations are also discussed.

The magnetopyroelectric effect: heat-mediated magnetoelectricity in magnetic nanoparticle-ferroelectric polymer composites

Magnetoelectricity enables a solid-state material to generate electricity under magnetic fields. Most magnetoelectric composites are developed through a strain-mediated route by coupling piezoelectric and magnetostrictive phases. However, the limited availability of high-performance magnetostrictive components has become a constraint for the development of novel magnetoelectric materials. Here, we demonstrate that nanostructured composites of magnetic and pyroelectric materials can generate electrical output, a phenomenon we refer to as the magnetopyroelectric (MPE) effect, which is analogous to the magnetoelectric effect in strain-mediated composite multiferroics. Our composite consists of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) dispersed in a ferroelectric (and also pyroelectric) poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) matrix. Under a high-frequency low-magnitude alternating magnetic field, the IONPs generate heat through hysteresis loss, which stimulates the depolarization process of the pyroelectric polymer. This magnetopyroelectric approach creates a new opportunity to develop magnetoelectric materials for a wide range of applications.

Redox phase transformations in magnetite nanoparticles: impact on their composition, structure and biomedical applications

Magnetite nanoparticles (NPs) are one of the most investigated nanomaterials so far and modern synthesis methods currently provide an exceptional control of their size, shape, crystallinity and surface functionalization. These advances have enabled their use in different fields ranging from environmental applications to biomedicine. However, several studies have shown that the precise composition and crystal structure of magnetite NPs depend on their redox phase transformations, which have a profound impact on their physicochemical properties and, ultimately, on their technological applications. Although the physical mechanisms behind such chemical transformations in bulk materials have been known for a long time, experiments on NPs with large surface-to-volume ratios have revealed intriguing results. This article is focused on reviewing the current status of the field. Following an introduction on the fundamental properties of magnetite and other related iron oxides (including maghemite and wüstite), some basic concepts on the chemical routes to prepare iron oxide nanomaterials are presented. The key experimental techniques available to study phase transformations in iron oxides, their advantages and drawbacks to the study of nanomaterials are then discussed. The major section of this work is devoted to the topotactic oxidation of magnetite NPs and, in this regard, the cation diffusion model that accounts for the experimental results on the kinetics of the process is critically examined. Since many synthesis routes rely on the formation of monodisperse magnetite NPs via oxidation of wüstite counterparts, the modulation of their physical properties by crystal defects arising from the oxidation process is also described. Finally, the importance of a precise control of the composition and structure of magnetite-based NPs is discussed and its role in their biomedical applications is highlighted.

Synthesis and Functional Characterization of CoxFe3-xO4-BaTiO3 Magnetoelectric Nanocomposites for Biomedical Applications

Nowadays, magnetoelectric nanomaterials are on their way to finding wide applications in biomedicine for various cancer and neurological disease treatment, which is mainly restricted by their relatively high toxicity and complex synthesis. This study for the first time reports novel magnetoelectric nanocomposites of Co_xFe_3-xO₄-BaTiO₃ series with tuned magnetic phase structures, which were synthesized via a two-step chemical approach in polyol media. The magnetic Co_xFe_3-xO₄ phases with x = 0.0, 0.5, and 1.0 were obtained by thermal decomposition in triethylene glycol media. The magnetoelectric nanocomposites were synthesized by the decomposition of barium titanate precursors in the presence of a magnetic phase under solvothermal conditions and subsequent annealing at 700 °C. X-ray diffraction revealed the presence of both spinel and perovskite phases after annealing with average crystallite sizes in the range of 9.0-14.5 nm. Transmission electron microscopy data showed two-phase composite nanostructures consisting of ferrites and barium titanate. The presence of interfacial connections between magnetic and ferroelectric phases was confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Magnetization data showed expected ferrimagnetic behavior and σ_s decrease after the nanocomposite formation. Magnetoelectric coefficient measurements after the annealing showed non-linear change with a maximum of 89 mV/cm*Oe with x = 0.5, 74 mV/cm*Oe with x = 0, and a minimum of 50 mV/cm*Oe with x = 0.0 core composition, that corresponds with the coercive force of the nanocomposites: 240 Oe, 89 Oe and 36 Oe, respectively. The obtained nanocomposites show low toxicity in the whole studied concentration range of 25-400 μg/mL on CT-26 cancer cells. The synthesized nanocomposites show low cytotoxicity and high magnetoelectric effects, therefore they can find wide applications in biomedicine.

Multiscale magnetization in cobalt-doped ferrite nanocubes

The magnetization of cobalt ferrite nanocubes of similar size, but with varying Co/Fe ratio, is extensively characterized on atomistic and nanoscopic length scales. Combination of X-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy, magnetization measurements and polarized small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) reveals that a lower amount of cobalt leads to an enhanced magnetization. At the same time, magnetic SANS confirms no or negligible near-surface spin disorder in these highly crystalline, homogeneously magnetized nanoparticles, resulting in an exceptionally hard magnetic material with high coercivity.

Magnetic neutron scattering from spherical nanoparticles with Néel surface anisotropy: atomistic simulations

A dilute ensemble of randomly oriented non-interacting spherical nanomagnets is considered, and its magnetization structure and ensuing neutron scattering response are investigated by numerically solving the Landau-Lifshitz equation. Taking into account the isotropic exchange interaction, an external magnetic field, a uniaxial magnetic anisotropy for the particle core, and in particular the Néel surface anisotropy, the magnetic small-angle neutron scattering cross section and pair-distance distribution function are calculated from the obtained equilibrium spin structures. The numerical results are compared with the well known analytical expressions for uniformly magnetized particles and provide guidance to the experimentalist. In addition, the effect of a particle-size distribution function is modelled.

Hardening of Cobalt Ferrite Nanoparticles by Local Crystal Strain Release: Implications for Rare Earth Free Magnets

In this work, we demonstrate that the reduction of the local internal stress by a low-temperature solvent-mediated thermal treatment is an effective post-treatment tool for magnetic hardening of chemically synthesized nanoparticles. As a case study, we used nonstoichiometric cobalt ferrite particles of an average size of 32(8) nm synthesized by thermal decomposition, which were further subjected to solvent-mediated annealing at variable temperatures between 150 and 320 °C in an inert atmosphere. The postsynthesis treatment produces a 50% increase of the coercive field, without affecting neither the remanence ratio nor the spontaneous magnetization. As a consequence, the energy product and the magnetic energy storage capability, key features for applications as permanent magnets and magnetic hyperthermia, can be increased by ca. 70%. A deep structural, morphological, chemical, and magnetic characterization reveals that the mechanism governing the coercive field improvement is the reduction of the concomitant internal stresses induced by the low-temperature annealing postsynthesis treatment. Furthermore, we show that the medium where the mild annealing process occurs is essential to control the final properties of the nanoparticles because the classical annealing procedure (T > 350 °C) performed on a dried powder does not allow the release of the lattice stress, leading to the reduction of the initial coercive field. The strategy here proposed, therefore, constitutes a method to improve the magnetic properties of nanoparticles, which can be particularly appealing for those materials, as is the case of cobalt ferrite, currently investigated as building blocks for the development of rare-earth free permanent magnets.

Chemically Induced Magnetic Dead Shells in Superparamagnetic Ni Nanoparticles Deduced from Polarized Small-Angle Neutron Scattering

Advances in the synthesis and characterization of colloidal magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) have yielded great gains in the understanding of their complex magnetic behavior, with implications for numerous applications. Recent work using Ni NPs as a model soft ferromagnetic system, for example, achieved quantitative understanding of the superparamagnetic blocking temperature-particle diameter relationship. This hinged, however, on the critical assumption of a ferromagnetic NP volume lower than the chemical volume due to a non-ferromagnetic dead shell indirectly deduced from magnetometry. Here, we determine both the chemical and magnetic average internal structures of Ni NP ensembles via unpolarized, half-polarized, and fully polarized small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements and analyses coupled with X-ray diffraction and magnetometry. The postulated nanometric magnetic dead shell is not only detected but conclusively identified as a non-ferromagnetic Ni phosphide derived from the trioctylphosphine commonly used in hot-injection colloidal NP syntheses. The phosphide shell thickness is tunable via synthesis temperature, falling to as little as 0.5 nm at 170 °C. Temperature- and magnetic field-dependent polarized SANS measurements additionally reveal essentially bulk-like ferromagnetism in the Ni core and negligible interparticle magnetic interactions, quantitatively supporting prior modeling of superparamagnetism. These findings advance the understanding of synthesis-structure-property relationships in metallic magnetic NPs, point to a simple potential route to ligand-free stabilization, and highlight the power of the currently available suite of polarized SANS measurement and analysis capabilities for magnetic NP science and technology.

90Y-CA/SPIONs for dual magnetic hyperthermia-radionuclide nanobrachytherapy of solid tumours

Radiolabelled superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) are a promising nanomaterial for the development of dual radiation/hyperthermia cancer therapy. To that purpose, flower-shaped SPIONs with an exceptional heating capability were synthesised and coated with citrate, dextran or (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane. Both non-coated and coated SPIONs were nontoxic to CT-26 mouse colon cancer cells up to 1.0 mg ml^-1in vitro. In an oscillating magnetic field, citrate-coated SPIONs (CA/SPIONs) displayed the highest heating rate (SAR ∼ 253 W g^-1) and the strongest hyperthermia effects against CT-26 cells. Labelling of the CA/SPIONs by the⁹⁰Y radionuclide, emitting β^-radiation with an average/maximum energy of 0.94/2.23 MeV, and deep tissue penetration generated⁹⁰Y-CA/SPIONs intended for the therapy of solid tumours. However, intravenous injection of⁹⁰Y-CA/SPIONs in CT-26 xenograft-bearing mice resulted in low tumour accumulation. On the contrary, intratumoural injection resulted in long-term retention at the injection site. A single intratumoural injection of 0.25 mg CA/SPIONs followed by 30-min courses of magnetic hyperthermia for four consecutive days caused a moderate antitumour effect against CT-26 and 4T1 mouse tumour xenografts. Intratumoural application of 1.85 MBq/0.25 mg⁹⁰Y-CA/SPIONs, alone or combined with hyperthermia, caused a significant (P ≤ 0.01) antitumour effect without signs of systemic toxicity. The results confirm the suitability of⁹⁰Y-CA/SPIONs for monotherapy or dual magnetic hyperthermia-radionuclide nanobrachytherapy (NBT) of solid tumours.

Magnetic order and disorder environments in superantiferromagnetic [Formula: see text] nanoparticles

Magnetic nanoparticles exhibit two different local symmetry environments, one ascribed to the core and one corresponding to the nanoparticle surface. This implies the existence of a dual spin dynamics, leading to the presence of two different magnetic arrangements governed by different correlation lengths. In this work, two ensembles of [Formula: see text] nanoparticles with mean sizes of 18 nm and 13 nm have been produced to unravel the magnetic couplings established among the magnetic moments located within the core and at the nanoparticle surface. To this end, we have combined neutron diffraction measurements, appropriate to investigate magnetically-ordered spin arrangements, with time-dependent macroscopic AC susceptibility measurements to reveal memory and aging effects. The observation of the latter phenomena are indicative of magnetically-frustrated states. The obtained results indicate that, while the [Formula: see text] magnetic moments located within the nanoparticle core keep the bulk antiferromagnetic commensurate structure in the whole magnetic state, the correlations among the surface spins give rise to a collective frustrated spin-glass phase. The interpretation of the magnetic structure of the nanoparticles is complemented by specific-heat measurements, which further support the lack of incommensurability in the nanoparticle state.

Revealing the crystal phases of primary particles formed during the coprecipitation of iron oxides

The mechanistic investigation of the coprecipitation formation of iron oxides has been a long-standing challenge due to the rapid reaction kinetics and high complexity of iron hydrolysis reactions. Although a few studies have suggested that the coprecipitation of iron oxide nanoparticles follows a non-classic route through inter-particle attachment, the compositions of the primary particles remain undetermined. Herein, by using a specially designed gas/liquid mixed phase fluidic reactor we controlled the reaction time from 3 s to over 5 min, and successfully identified the concentration of different intermediate phases as a function of time. We suggest that the initial Fe³⁺ ions are hydrolyzed under the alkaline condition to give Fe(OH)₃, which then rapidly dehydrates to yield α-FeOOH. In the presence of Fe²⁺ ions, which could also act as the catalyst, α-FeOOH finally transforms to Fe₃O₄.

Effect of Ti Atoms on Néel Relaxation Mechanism at Magnetic Heating Performance of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles

The study was based on understanding the relationship between titanium (Ti) doping amount and magnetic heating performance of magnetite (Fe3O4). Superparamagnetic nanosized Ti-doped magnetite ((Fe1−x,Tix)3O4; x = 0.02, 0.03 and 0.05) particles were synthesized by sol-gel technique. In addition to (Fe1−x,Tix)3O4 nanoparticles, SiO2 coated (Fe1−x,Tix)3O4 nanoparticles were produced as core-shell structures to understand the effects of silica coating on the magnetic properties of nanoparticles. Moreover, the magnetic properties were associated with the Néel relaxation mechanism due to the magnetic heating ability of single-domain state nanoparticles. In terms of results, it was observed that the induced RF magnetic field for SiO2 coated (Fe0.97,Ti0.03)3O4 nanoparticles caused an increase in temperature difference (ΔT), which reached up to 22 °C in 10 min. The ΔT values of SiO2 coated (Fe0.97,Ti0.03)3O4 nanoparticles were very close to the values of uncoated Fe3O4 nanoparticles.

Application of Noninvasive Imaging to Combined Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors for Breast Cancer: Facts and Future

With the application of mono-immunotherapy in cancer, particularly immune checkpoint inhibitors, improved outcomes have been achieved. However, there are several limitations to immunotherapy, such as a poor response to the drugs, immune resistance, and immune-related adverse events. In recent years, studies of preclinical animal models and clinical trials have demonstrated that immune checkpoint inhibitors for breast cancer can significantly prolong the overall survival and quality of patients' lives. Meanwhile, combined immune checkpoint inhibitor treatment has attracted researchers' attention and showed great potential in the comprehensive treatment of breast cancer patients. Additionally, noninvasive imaging enables physicians to predict response to combined immunotherapeutic drugs, achieve treatment efficacy, and lead to better clinical management. Herein, we review the background of combined immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy and summarize its targeted imaging as well as progress in noninvasive imaging aimed at evaluating therapeutic outcomes. Finally, we describe several factors that may influence the outcome of this combined immunotherapy, the future direction of medical imaging, and the potential application of artificial intelligence in breast cancer. With further development of noninvasive imaging for the guidance of combined immune checkpoint inhibitors, cures for this disease may be achieved.

Using small-angle scattering to guide functional magnetic nanoparticle design

Magnetic nanoparticles offer unique potential for various technological, biomedical, or environmental applications thanks to the size-, shape- and material-dependent tunability of their magnetic properties. To optimize particles for a specific application, it is crucial to interrelate their performance with their structural and magnetic properties. This review presents the advantages of small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering techniques for achieving a detailed multiscale characterization of magnetic nanoparticles and their ensembles in a mesoscopic size range from 1 to a few hundred nanometers with nanometer resolution. Both X-rays and neutrons allow the ensemble-averaged determination of structural properties, such as particle morphology or particle arrangement in multilayers and 3D assemblies. Additionally, the magnetic scattering contributions enable retrieving the internal magnetization profile of the nanoparticles as well as the inter-particle moment correlations caused by interactions within dense assemblies. Most measurements are used to determine the time-averaged ensemble properties, in addition advanced small-angle scattering techniques exist that allow accessing particle and spin dynamics on various timescales. In this review, we focus on conventional small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS and SANS), X-ray and neutron reflectometry, gracing-incidence SAXS and SANS, X-ray resonant magnetic scattering, and neutron spin-echo spectroscopy techniques. For each technique, we provide a general overview, present the latest scientific results, and discuss its strengths as well as sample requirements. Finally, we give our perspectives on how future small-angle scattering experiments, especially in combination with micromagnetic simulations, could help to optimize the performance of magnetic nanoparticles for specific applications.

Tailoring defects and nanocrystal transformation for optimal heating power in bimagnetic CoyFe1-yO@CoxFe3-xO4 particles

The effects of cobalt incorporation in spherical heterostructured iron oxide nanocrystals (NCs) of sub-critical size have been explored by colloidal chemistry methods. Synchrotron X-ray total scattering methods suggest that cobalt (Co) substitution in rock salt iron oxide NCs tends to remedy their vacant iron sites, offering a higher degree of resistance to oxidative conversion. Self-passivation still creates a spinel-like shell, but with a higher volume fraction of the rock salt Co-containing phase in the core. The higher divalent metal stoichiometry in the rock salt phase, with increasing Co content, results in a population of unoccupied tetrahedral metal sites in the spinel part, likely through oxidative shell creation, involving an ordered defect-clustering mechanism, directly correlated to core stabilization. To shed light on the effects of Co-substitution and atomic-scale defects (vacant sites), Monte Carlo simulations suggest that the designed NCs, with desirable, enhanced magnetic properties (cf. exchange bias and coercivity), are developed with magnetocrystalline anisotropy which increases due to a relatively low content of Co ions in the lattice. The growth of optimally performing candidates combines also a strongly exchange-coupled system, secured through a high volumetric ratio rock salt phase, interfaced by a not so defective spinel shell. In view of these requirements, specific absorption rate (SAR) calculations demonstrate that the rock salt core sufficiently protected from oxidation and the heterostructure preserved over time, play a key role in magnetically mediated heating efficacies, for potential use of such NCs in magnetic hyperthermia applications.
