High-Polarity Fluoroalkyl Ether Electrolyte Enables Solvation-Free Li+ Transfer for High-Rate Lithium Metal Batteries

Quantification of Charge Transport and Mass Deprivation in Solid Electrolyte Interphase for Kinetically-Stable Low-Temperature Lithium-Ion Batteries

Graphite (Gr)-based lithium-ion batteries with admirable electrochemical performance below -20 °C are desired but are hindered by sluggish interfacial charge transport and desolvation process. Li salt dissociation via Li+-solvent interaction enables mobile Li+ liberation and contributes to bulk ion transport, while is contradictory to fast interfacial desolvation. Designing kinetically-stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) without compromising strong Li+-solvent interaction is expected to compatibly improve interfacial charge transport and desolvation kinetics. However, the relationship between physicochemical features and temperature-dependent kinetics properties of SEI remains vague. Herein, we propose four key thermodynamics parameters of SEI potentially influencing low-temperature electrochemistry, including electron work function, Li+ transfer barrier, surface energy, and desolvation energy. Based on the above parameters, we further define a novel descriptor, separation factor of SEI (SSEI), to quantitatively depict charge (Li+/e-) transport and solvent deprivation processes at Gr/electrolyte interface. A Li3PO4-based, inorganics-enriched SEI derived by Li difluorophosphate (LiDFP) additive exhibits the highest SSEI (4.89×103) to enable efficient Li+ conduction, e- blocking and rapid desolvation, and as a result, much suppressed Li-metal precipitation, electrolyte decomposition and Gr sheets exfoliation, thus improving low-temperature battery performances. Overall, our work originally provides visualized guides to improve low-temperature reaction kinetics/thermodynamics by constructing desirable SEI chemistry.

Dual-Interphase-Stabilizing Sulfolane-Based Electrolytes for High-Voltage and High-Safety Lithium Metal Batteries

High-voltage Li metal battery (HV-LMB) is one of the most promising energy storage technologies to achieve ultrahigh energy density. Nevertheless, electrolytes reported to date are difficult to simultaneously stabilize the Li metal anode and high-voltage cathode, especially without the assistance of expensive and corrosive high-concentration Li salts. Herein, a dual-interphase-stabilizing (DIS) and safe electrolyte that bypasses the high-concentration Li salt is reported. The electrolyte consists of high-flash-point sulfolane as solvent, molecular-orbital-engineered additives that enable stable B-F rich cathodic interphase, and unique C-F rich organic anodic interphase. The stable cycling of both Li metal anode and 4.75 V-LiCoO2 cathode in the DIS electrolyte (> 500 cycles) is demonstrated. HV-LMB pouch cells of a high energy density (435 Wh kg-1) can sustainably operate for more than 100 cycles. Moreover, the low cost and high thermal stability of the DIS electrolyte offer superior cost-effectiveness and safety for large-scale applications of HV-LMBs in the future.

In-Depth Understanding of Interfacial Na+ Behaviors in Sodium Metal Anode: Migration, Desolvation, and Deposition

Interfacial Na+ behaviors of sodium (Na) anode severely threaten the stability of sodium-metal batteries (SMBs). This review systematically and in-depth discusses the current fundamental understanding of interfacial Na+ behaviors in SMBs including Na+ migration, desolvation, diffusion, nucleation, and deposition. The key influencing factors and optimization strategies of these behaviors are further summarized and discussed. More importantly, the high-energy-density anode-free sodium metal batteries (AFSMBs) are highlighted by addressing key issues in the areas of limited Na sources and irreversible Na loss. Simultaneously, recent advanced characterization techniques for deeper insights into interfacial Na+ deposition behavior and composition information of SEI film are spotlighted to provide guidance for the advancement of SMBs and AFSMBs. Finally, the prominent perspectives are presented to guide and promote the development of SMBs and AFSMBs.

Gel Polymer Electrolyte Enables Low-Temperature and High-Rate Lithium-Ion Batteries via Bionic Interface Design

Traditional ethylene carbonate (EC)-based electrolytes constrain the applications of silicon carbon (Si-C) anodes under fast-charging and low-temperature conditions due to sluggish Li+ migration kinetics and unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Herein, inspired by the efficient water purification and soil stabilization of aquatic plants, a stable SEI with a 3D desolvation interface is designed with gel polymer electrolyte (GPE), accelerating Li+ desolvation and migration at the interface and within stable SEI. As demonstrated by theoretical simulations and experiment results, the resulting poly(1,3-dioxolane) (PDOL), prepared by in situ ring-opening polymerization of 1,3-dioxolane (DOL), creates a 3D desolvation area, improving the Li+ desolvation at the interface and yielding an amorphous GPE with a high Li+ ionic conductivity (5.73 mS cm-1). Furthermore, more anions participate in the solvated structure, forming an anion-derived stable SEI and improving Li+ transport through SEI. Consequently, the Si-C anode achieves excellent rate performance with GPE at room temperature (RT) and low temperature (-40 °C). The pouch full cell coupled with LiFePO4 cathode obtains 97.42 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles at 5 C/5 C. This innovatively designed 3D desolvation interface and SEI represent significant breakthroughs for developing fast-charging and low-temperature batteries.

Optimization Design of Fluoro-Cyanogen Copolymer Electrolyte to Achieve 4.7 V High-Voltage Solid Lithium Metal Battery

Raising the charging voltage and employing high-capacity cathodes like lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) are efficient strategies to expand battery capacity. High voltage, however, will reveal major issues such as the electrolyte's low interface stability and weak electrochemical stability. Designing high-performance solid electrolytes from the standpoint of substance genetic engineering design is consequently vital. In this instance, stable SEI and CEI interface layers are constructed, and a 4.7 V high-voltage solid copolymer electrolyte (PAFP) with a fluoro-cyanogen group is generated by polymer molecular engineering. As a result, PAFP has an exceptionally broad electrochemical window (5.5 V), a high Li+ transference number (0.71), and an ultrahigh ionic conductivity (1.2 mS cm-2) at 25 °C. Furthermore, the Li||Li symmetric cell possesses excellent interface stability and 2000 stable cycles at 1 mA cm-2. The LCO|PAFP|Li batteries have a 73.7% retention capacity after 1200 cycles. Moreover, it still has excellent cycling stability at a high charging voltage of 4.7 V. These characteristics above also allow PAFP to run stably at high loading, showing excellent electrochemical stability. Furthermore, the proposed PAFP provides new insights into high-voltage resistant solid polymer electrolytes.

Regulating Electrolyte Solvation Structures via Diluent-Solvent Interactions for Safe High-Voltage Lithium Metal Batteries

Local high concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) have been proved to be one of the most promising systems to stabilize both high voltage cathodes and Li metal anode for next-generation batteries. However, the solvation structures and interactions among different species in LHCEs are still convoluted, which bottlenecks the further breakthrough on electrolyte development. Here, it is demonstrated that the hydrogen bonding interaction between diluent and solvent is crucial for the construction of LHCEs and corresponding interphase chemistries. The 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl trifluoromethane sulfonate (TFSF) is selected as diluent with the solvent dimethoxy-ethane (DME) to prepare a non-flammable LHCE for high voltage LMBs. This is first find that the hydrogen bonding interaction between TFSF and DME solvent tailors the electrolyte solvation structures by weakening the coordination of DME molecules to Li+ cations and allows more participation of anions in the first solvation shell, leading to the formation of aggregates (AGGs) clusters which are conducive to generating inorganic solid/cathodic electrolyte interphases (SEI/CEIs). The proposed TFSF based LHCE enables the Li||NCM811 (LiNi0.8Mn0.1O2) batteries to realize >80% capacity retention with a high average Coulombic efficiency of 99.8% for 230 cycles under aggressive conditions (NCM811 cathode: 3.4 mAh cm-2, cut-off voltage: 4.4 V, and 20 µm Li foil).

Extreme Fast Charging of Lithium Metal Batteries Enabled by a Molten-Salt-Derived Nanocrystal Interphase

The extreme fast charging performance of lithium metal batteries (LMBs) with a long life is an important focus in the development of next-generation battery technologies. The friable solid electrolyte interphase and dendritic lithium growth are major problems. The formation of an inorganic nanocrystal-dominant interphase produced by preimmersing the Li in molten lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide that suppresses the overgrowth of the usual interphase is reported. Its high surface modulus combined with fast Li+ diffusivity enables a reversible dendrite-proof deposition under ultrahigh-rate conditions. It gives a record-breaking cumulative plating/stripping capacity of >240 000 mAh cm-2 at 30 mA cm-2@30 mAh cm-2 for a symmetric cell and an extreme fast charging performance at 6 C for 500 cycles for a Li||LiCoO2 full cell with a high-areal-capacity, thus expanding the use of LMBs to high-loading and power-intensive scenarios. Its usability both in roll-to-roll production and in different electrolytes indicating the scalable and industrial potential of this process for high-performance LMBs.

All-Fluorinated Electrolyte Engineering Enables Practical Wide-Temperature-Range Lithium Metal Batteries

The development of lithium metal batteries (LMBs) is severely hindered owing to the limited temperature window of the electrolyte, which renders uncontrolled side reactions, unstable electrolyte/electrode interface (EEI) formation, and sluggish desolvation kinetics for wide temperature operation condition. Herein, we developed an all-fluorinated electrolyte composed of lithium bis(trifluoromethane sulfonyl)imide, hexafluorobenzene (HFB), and fluoroethylene carbonate, which effectively regulates solvation structure toward a wide temperature of 160 °C (-50 to 110 °C). The introduction of thermostable HFB induces the generation of EEI with a high LiF ratio of 93%, which results in an inhibited side reaction and gas generation on EEI and enhanced interfacial ion transfer at extreme temperatures. Therefore, an unparalleled capacity retention of 88.3% after 400 cycles at 90 °C and an improved cycling performance at -50 °C can be achieved. Meanwhile, the practical 1.3 Ah-level pouch cell delivers high energy density of 307.13 Wh kg-1 at 60 °C and 277.99 Wh kg-1 at -30 °C after 50 cycles under lean E/C ratio of 2.7 g/Ah and low N/P ratio of 1.2. This work not only offers a viable strategy for wide-temperature-range electrolyte design but also promotes the practicalization of LMBs.

Designing Temperature-Insensitive Solvated Electrolytes for Low-Temperature Lithium Metal Batteries

Lithium metal batteries face problems from sluggish charge transfer at interfaces, as well as parasitic reactions between lithium metal anodes and electrolytes, due to the strong electronegativity of oxygen donor solvents. These factors constrain the reversibility and kinetics of lithium metal batteries at low temperatures. Here, a nonsolvating cosolvent is applied to weaken the electronegativity of donor oxygen in ether solvents, enabling the participation of anionic donors in the solvation structure of Li+. This strategy significantly accelerates the desolvation process of Li+ and reduces the side effects of solvents on interfacial transport and stability. The designed anion-aggregated electrolyte has a unique temperature-insensitive solvation structure and enables lithium metal anodes to achieve a high average Coulombic efficiency at room temperature and -20 °C. A high-loading LiFePO4||Li cell exhibited high reversibility with a 100% capacity retention after 150 cycles at room temperature, -20, and -40 °C. The practical 1 Ah-level LiFePO4||Li pouch-cell delivered 81% and 61% of the capacity at room temperature when charged and discharged at -20 and -40 °C, respectively. This strategy of constructing temperature-insensitive solvation by electronegativity regulation offers a novel approach for developing electrolytes of low-temperature batteries.

Both Resilience and Adhesivity Define Solid Electrolyte Interphases for a High Performance Anode

Solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs) are sought to protect high-capacity anodes, which suffer from severe volume changes and fast degradations. The previously proposed effective SEIs were of high strength yet abhesive, inducing a yolk-shell structure to decouple the rigid SEI from the anode for accommodating the volume change. Ambivalently, the interfacial void-evolved electro-chemo-mechanical vulnerabilities become inherent defects. Here, we establish a new rationale for SEIs that resilience and adhesivity are both requirements and pioneer a design of a resilient yet adhesive SEI (re-ad-SEI), integrated into a conjugated surface bilayer structure. The re-ad-SEI and its protected particles exhibit excellent stability almost free from the thickening of SEI and the particle pulverization during cycling. More promisingly, the dynamically bonded intact SEI-anode interfaces enable a high-efficiency ion transport and provide a unique mechanical confinement effect for structural integrity of anodes. The high Coulombic efficiency (>99.8%), excellent cycling stability (500 cycles), and superior rate performance have been demonstrated in microsized Si-based anodes.

Tuning the End Alkyl Chain of the Ether Solvent to Stabilize the Electrode/Electrolyte Interfaces in the NCM-Li Battery

Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) combined with a high-voltage nickel-rich cathode show great potential in meeting the growing need for high energy density. The lack of advanced electrolytes has been a major obstacle in the commercialization of high-voltage lithium metal batteries (LMBs), as these electrolytes need to effectively support both a stable lithium metal anode (LMA) and a high-voltage cathode (>4 V vs Li+/Li). In this work, by extending the two terminal methyl groups in DIGDME and TEGDME to n-butyl groups, we design a new weakly solvating electrolyte (2 M LIFSI+TEGDBE) that enables the stable cycling of NMC83 (LiNi0.83Co0.12Mn0.05O2) cathodes. The NMC83 cell exhibits a high and stable Coulombic efficiency (CE) of over 99%, as well as capacity retention of approximately 99.8% after 100 cycles at 0.3 C. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis (XPS) and high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) images revealed that the anion species decomposed first, resulting in the formation of a cathode-electrolyte interface (CEI) film predominantly consisting of decomposition products from the anions on the positive electrode surface. This work links the functional group of solvents with the solvation structure and electrochemical performance of ether-based electrolytes, providing a distinctive sight to design advanced electrolytes for high-energy-density LMBs.

Fluorine Chemistry in Rechargeable Batteries: Challenges, Progress, and Perspectives

The renewable energy industry demands rechargeable batteries that can be manufactured at low cost using abundant resources while offering high energy density, good safety, wide operating temperature windows, and long lifespans. Utilizing fluorine chemistry to redesign battery configurations/components is considered a critical strategy to fulfill these requirements due to the natural abundance, robust bond strength, and extraordinary electronegativity of fluorine and the high free energy of fluoride formation, which enables the fluorinated components with cost effectiveness, nonflammability, and intrinsic stability. In particular, fluorinated materials and electrode|electrolyte interphases have been demonstrated to significantly affect reaction reversibility/kinetics, safety, and temperature tolerance of rechargeable batteries. However, the underlining principles governing material design and the mechanistic insights of interphases at the atomic level have been largely overlooked. This review covers a wide range of topics from the exploration of fluorine-containing electrodes, fluorinated electrolyte constituents, and other fluorinated battery components for metal-ion shuttle batteries to constructing fluoride-ion batteries, dual-ion batteries, and other new chemistries. In doing so, this review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the structure-property interactions, the features of fluorinated interphases, and cutting-edge techniques for elucidating the role of fluorine chemistry in rechargeable batteries. Further, we present current challenges and promising strategies for employing fluorine chemistry, aiming to advance the electrochemical performance, wide temperature operation, and safety attributes of rechargeable batteries.

Polymerizable Deep Eutectic Solvent-Based Polymer Electrolyte for Advanced Dendrite-Free, High-Rate, and Long-Life Li Metal Batteries

The recently developed advanced electrolytes possess many crucial qualities, including robust stability, Li dendrite-free, and comparable interface compatibility, for the manufacturing of Li metal batteries with a high energy density. In this study, lithium bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide, acrylamide, and succinonitrile were first used to design a polymerizable monomer. Then, it went through in situ thermal polymerization to attain a new solid polymer electrolyte [named poly(PDES)]. The synthesized poly(PDES) electrolyte achieved higher ionic conductivity (∼1.89 × 10-3 S cm-1), oxidation potential (∼5.10 V versus Li+/Li), and a larger lithium-ion transfer number (∼0.63). Moreover, poly(PDES) was nonflammable and could effectively inhibit the formation of Li dendrites. As a result, the assembled batteries using the poly(PDES) electrolyte for both Li||LiFePO4 and Li||LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 exhibited excellent interface compatibility and electrochemical performances. This poly(PDES) electrolyte has promising potential for broad application in lithium-metal batteries with elevated energy density and safety performance in the near future.

Revealing the effect of LiOH on forming a SEI using a Co magnetic "probe"

The solid-electrolyte-interphase (SEI) plays a critical role in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of its important influence on electrochemical performance, such as cycle stability, coulombic efficiency, etc. Although LiOH has been recognized as a key component of the SEI, its influence on the SEI and electrochemical performance has not been well clarified due to the difficulty in precisely controlling the LiOH content and characterize the detailed interface reactions. Here, a gradual change of LiOH content is realized by different reduction schemes among Co(OH)2, CoOOH and CoO. With reduced Co nanoparticles as magnetic "probes", SEI characterization is achieved by operando magnetometry. By combining comprehensive characterization and theoretical calculations, it is verified that LiOH leads to a composition transformation from lithium ethylene di-carbonate (LEDC) to lithium ethylene mono-carbonate (LEMC) in the SEI and ultimately results in capacity decay. This work unfolds the detailed SEI reaction scenario involving LiOH, provides new insights into the influence of SEI composition, and has value for the co-development between the electrode materials and electrolyte.

Dendrite inhibited and dead lithium activated dual-function additive for lithium metal batteries

In this study, 2-fluoro-5-iodopyridine (2-F-5-IPy) was used as an electrolyte additive, which can not only protect the negative electrode effectively by forming a stable SEI, but also convert dead lithium into active lithium. Benefits from this are a capacity retention of a Li‖LiFePO4 cell after 300 cycles from 36.5% to 89.4%, and the symmetrical cell can work stably for more than 800 hours. Therefore, the addition of 2-F-5-IPy can effectively improve the performance of lithium metal batteries.

A Review on Regulating Li+ Solvation Structures in Carbonate Electrolytes for Lithium Metal Batteries

Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are considered promising candidates for next-generation battery systems due to their high energy density. However, commercialized carbonate electrolytes cannot be used in LMBs due to their poor compatibility with lithium metal anodes. While increasing cut-off voltage is an effective way to boost the energy density of LMBs, conventional ethylene carbonate-based electrolytes undergo a number of side reactions at high voltages. It is therefore critical to upgrade conventional carbonate electrolytes, the performance of which is highly influenced by the solvation structure of lithium ions (Li⁺ ). This review provides a comprehensive overview of the strategies to regulate the solvation structure of Li⁺ in carbonate electrolytes for LMBs by better understanding the science behind the Li⁺ solvation structure and Li⁺ behavior. Different strategies are systematically compared to help select better electrolytes for specific applications. The remaining scientific and technical problems are pointed out, and directions for future research on carbonate electrolytes for LMBs are proposed.

Improving performances of the electrode/electrolyte interface via the regulation of solvation complexes: a review and prospect

The electrode/electrolyte interface (EEI) is a research hotspot in lithium-ion batteries, while the electrolyte solvation complex can be regarded as a factor that cannot be ignored in determining the performance of the EEI. From the perspective of the electrolyte solvation complex, this review summarizes the effects of solvation complexes on the composition of an EEI film and the Li⁺ desolvation process, and further clarifies the internal mechanism of the electrolyte composition controlling solvation chemistry. Finally, combined with doubtful points that are not comprehensively considered in the regulation of solvated complexes, this review puts forward some cutting-edge views, which are of great significance for future guidance in improving the performance of lithium-ion batteries.

Taming Solvent-Solute Interaction Accelerates Interfacial Kinetics in Low-Temperature Lithium-Metal Batteries

Lithium (Li)-metal batteries promise energy density beyond 400 Wh kg^-1 , while their practical operation at an extreme temperature below -30 °C suffers severe capacity deterioration. Such battery failure highly relates to the remarkably increased kinetic barrier of interfacial processes, including interfacial desolvation, ion transportation, and charge transfer. In this work, the interfacial kinetics in three prototypical electrolytes are quantitatively probed by three-electrode electrochemical techniques and molecular dynamics simulations. Desolvation as the limiting step of interfacial processes is validated to dominate the cell impedance and capacity at low temperature. 1,3-Dioxolane-based electrolyte with tamed solvent-solute interaction facilitates fast desolvation, enabling the practical Li|LiNi_0.5 Co_0.2 Mn_0.3 O₂ cells at -40 °C to retain 66% of room-temperature capacity and withstand remarkably fast charging rate (0.3 C). The barrier of desolvation dictated by solvent-solute interaction environments is quantitatively uncovered. Regulating the solvent-solute interaction by low-affinity solvents emerges as a promising solution to low-temperature batteries.

Limited Lithium Loading Promises Improved Lithium-Metal Anodes in Interface-Modified 3D Matrixes

Confining Li metal in a three-dimensional (3D) matrix has been proven effective in improving the Li-metal anodes; however, in most studies, the loading of Li in the 3D matrix is far excessive, resulting in a dense bulk Li-metal anode with a low Li-utilization rate, forfeiting the effect of the 3D matrix. Here, we show that limiting the loading of Li metal within an interface-modified 3D carbon matrix not only increases the Li-utilization rate but also improves the electrochemical performance of the Li-metal anode. We use lithiophilic Fe₂O₃ granules anchored on a 3D carbon fiber scaffold to guide molten Li dispersion onto the fibers with controlled Li loading. Limiting Li loading maximizes the interface lithiophilic effect of the Fe₂O₃ granules while preserving sufficient space for electrolyte infusion, collectively ensuring uniform Li deposition and fast Li⁺ transport kinetics. The Li anode with limited Li dosage achieves remarkably improved Li-anode performances, including long lifespan, low voltage polarization, and low electrochemical resistance in both the symmetric cells and full cells. The improved electrochemical performance of the limited Li anode substantiates the importance to reduce Li loading from a fresh perspective and provides an avenue for building practical Li-metal batteries.

New enhancement mechanism of an ether-based electrolyte in cobalt sulfide-containing potassium-ion batteries

The performance of potassium (K)-ion batteries (KIBs) is not only dependent on electrode materials but also highly related to the electrolyte. In this work, we obtained a cobalt sulfide (CoS)-containing hybrid by the hydrothermal method and subsequent thermal treatment for K-ion storage. After ether-based electrolyte matching, the CoS-containing hybrid achieves a specific capacity of 229 mA h g^-1 at 1 A g^-1 after 300 cycles, and presents enhanced performance in the ether-based electrolyte. According to our measurement and calculation, the CoS-containing hybrid in the ether-based electrolyte promotes the formation of a highly anionic coordination solvated structure, which contributes to the enhancement of the stability of the electrolyte for K-ion storage. In addition, the strong coordination of anions also facilitates the rapid separation of the solvent during the potassiation process, which is also in favor of the decrease of the side reaction of the CoS@RGO hybrid for KIBs. We believe that our work will provide a new perspective on electrolyte engineering to boost the electrode material performance for K-ion storage.

Recent Trends in Elpasolite Single Crystal Scintillators for Radiation Detection

Scintillation detection has attracted great interest in nuclear medicine, nuclear radiation detection, high-energy physics, and non-destructive inspection. The elpasolite crystals with Ce3+ dopants are promising for these endeavors due to their modest light yield and extremely good proportionality when excited by the gamma ray. Moreover, the 6Li and 35Cl isotopes in elpasolite crystals endow them with excellent neutron detection capability. These features allow not only a high energy resolution but also a high detection sensitivity. The elpasolite scintillators also enable the precisely dual detection of gamma/neutron signals through pulse height discrimination (PHD) or pulse shape discrimination (PSD). In this work, we review recent investigations on using the typical elpasolite scintillators, including Ce3+-doped Cs2LiYCl6 (CLYC), Cs2LiLaCl6 (CLLC), and Cs2LiLaBr6 (CLLB), for the monitoring of gamma rays and neutrons. The scintillation properties, detection mechanism, and elpasolite crystal structure are also discussed with the aim of improving high-energy ray detection ability.

Thermally Conductive AlN-Network Shield for Separators to Achieve Dendrite-Free Plating and Fast Li-Ion Transport toward Durable and High-Rate Lithium-Metal Anodes

Lithium-metal anodes suffer from inadequate rate and cycling performances for practical application mainly due to the harmful dendrite growth, especially at high currents. Herein a facile construction of the porous and robust network with thermally conductive AlN nanowires onto the commercial polypropylene separator by convenient vacuum filtration is reported. The so-constructed AlN-network shield provides a uniform thermal distribution to realize homogeneous Li deposition, super electrolyte-philic channels to enhance Li-ion transport, and also a physical barrier to resist dendrite piercing as the last fence. Consequently, the symmetric Li|Li cell presents an ultralong lifetime over 8000 h (20 mA cm^-2 , 3 mAh cm^-2 ) and over 1000 h even at an unprecedented high rate (80 mA cm^-2 , 80 mAh cm^-2 ), which is far surpassing the corresponding performances reported to date. The corresponding Li|LiFePO₄ cell delivers a high specific capacity of 84.3 mAh g^-1 at 10 C. This study demonstrates an efficient approach with great application potential toward durable and high-power Li-metal batteries and even beyond.
