Iodine Activation of Coordinated White Phosphorus: Formation and Transformation of 1,3‐Dihydride‐2‐iodidecyclotetraphosphane

Halogenation and Nucleophilic Quenching: Two Routes to E−X Bond Formation in Cobalt Triple‐Decker Complexes (E=As, P; X=F, Cl, Br, I)

The oxidation of [(Cp’’’Co)₂(μ,η² : η²‐E₂)₂] (E=As (1), P (2); Cp’’’=1,2,4‐tri(tert‐butyl)cyclopentadienyl) with halogens or halogen sources (I₂, PBr₅, PCl₅) was investigated. For the arsenic derivative, the ionic compounds [(Cp’’’Co)₂(μ,η⁴ : η⁴−As₄X)][Y] (X=I, Y=[As₆I₈]_0.5 (3 a), Y=[Co₂Cl_6‐nI_n]_0.5 (n=0, 2, 4; 3 b); X=Br, Y=[Co₂Br₆]_0.5 (4); X=Cl, Y=[Co₂Cl₆]_0.5 (5)) were isolated. The oxidation of the phosphorus analogue 2 with bromine and chlorine sources yielded the ionic complexes [(Cp’’’Co)₂(μ‐PBr₂)₂(μ‐Br)][Co₂Br₆]_0.5 (6 a), [(Cp’’’Co)₂(μ‐PCl₂)₂(μ‐Cl)][Co₂Cl₆]_0.5 (6 b) and the neutral species [(Cp’’’Co)₂(μ‐PCl₂)(μ‐PCl)(μ,η¹ : η¹‐P₂Cl₃] (7), respectively. As an alternative approach, quenching of the dications [(Cp’’’Co)₂(μ,η⁴ : η⁴‐E₄)][TEF]₂ (TEF=[Al{OC(CF₃)₃}₄]⁻, E=As (8), P (9)) with KI yielded [(Cp’’’Co)₂(μ,η⁴ : η⁴‐As₄I)][I] (10), representing the homologue of 3, and the neutral complex [(Cp’’’Co)(Cp’’’CoI₂)(μ,η⁴ : η¹‐P₄)] (11), respectively. The use of [(CH₃)₄N]F instead of KI leads to the formation of [(Cp’’’Co)₂(μ‐PF₂)(μ,η² : η¹ : η¹‐P₃F₂)] (12) and 2, thereby revealing synthetic access to polyphosphorus compounds bearing P−F groups and avoiding the use of very strong fluorinating reagents, such as XeF₂, that are difficult to control.

Transition-Metal-Mediated Functionalization of White Phosphorus

Recently there has been great interest in the reactivity of transition-metal (TM) centers towards white phosphorus (P4 ). This has ultimately been motivated by a desire to find TM-mediated alternatives to the current industrial routes used to transform P4 into myriad useful P-containing products, which are typically indirect, wasteful, and highly hazardous. Such a TM-mediated process can be divided into two steps: activation of P4 to generate a polyphosphorus complex TM-Pn , and subsequent functionalization of this complex to release the desired phosphorus-containing product. The former step has by now become well established, allowing the isolation of many different TM-Pn products. In contrast, productive functionalization of these complexes has proven extremely challenging and has been achieved only in a relative handful of cases. In this review we provide a comprehensive summary of successful TM-Pn functionalization reactions, where TM-Pn must be accessible by reaction of a TM precursor with P4 . We hope that this will provide a useful resource for continuing efforts that are working towards this highly challenging goal of modern synthetic chemistry.

Iodination of cyclo-E5 -Complexes (E=P, As)

In a high‐yield one‐pot synthesis, the reactions of [Cp*M(η⁵‐P₅)] (M=Fe (1), Ru (2)) with I₂ resulted in the selective formation of [Cp*MP₆I₆]⁺ salts (3, 4). The products comprise unprecedented all‐cis tripodal triphosphino‐cyclotriphosphine ligands. The iodination of [Cp*Fe(η⁵‐As₅)] (6) gave, in addition to [Fe(CH₃CN)₆]²⁺ salts of the rare [As₆I₈]²⁻ (in 7) and [As₄I₁₄]²⁻ (in 8) anions, the first di‐cationic Fe‐As triple decker complex [(Cp*Fe)₂(μ,η^5:5‐As₅)][As₆I₈] (9). In contrast, the iodination of [Cp*Ru(η⁵‐As₅)] (10) did not result in the full cleavage of the M−As bonds. Instead, a number of dinuclear complexes were obtained: [(Cp*Ru)₂(μ,η^5:5‐As₅)][As₆I₈]_0.5 (11) represents the first Ru‐As₅ triple decker complex, thus completing the series of monocationic complexes [(Cp^RM)₂(μ,η^5:5‐E₅)]⁺ (M=Fe, Ru; E=P, As). [(Cp*Ru)₂As₈I₆] (12) crystallizes as a racemic mixture of both enantiomers, while [(Cp*Ru)₂As₄I₄] (13) crystallizes as a symmetric and an asymmetric isomer and features a unique tetramer of {AsI} arsinidene units as a middle deck.

[3+2] Fragmentation of a Pentaphosphido Ligand by Cyanide

The activation of white phosphorus (P4 ) by transition-metal complexes has been studied for several decades, but the functionalization and release of the resulting (organo)phosphorus ligands has rarely been achieved. Herein we describe the formation of rare diphosphan-1-ide anions from a P5 ligand by treatment with cyanide. Cobalt diorganopentaphosphido complexes have been synthesized by a stepwise reaction sequence involving a low-valent diimine cobalt complex, white phosphorus, and diorganochlorophosphanes. The reactions of the complexes with tetraalkylammonium or potassium cyanide afford a cyclotriphosphido cobaltate anion 5 and 1-cyanodiphosphan-1-ide anions [R2 PPCN]- (6-R). The molecular structure of a related product 7 suggests a novel reaction mechanism, where coordination of the cyanide anion to the cobalt center induces a ligand rearrangement. This is followed by nucleophilic attack of a second cyanide anion at a phosphorus atom and release of the P2 fragment.

Functionalization of Pentaphosphorus Cations by Complexation

The chemistry of polyphosphorus cations has rapidly developed in recent years, but their coordination behavior has remained mostly unexplored. Herein, we describe the reactivity of [P5 R2 ]+ cations with cyclopentadienyl metal complexes. The reaction of [CpAr Fe(μ-Br)]2 (CpAr =C5 (C6 H4 -4-Et)5 ) with [P5 R2 ][GaCl4 ] (R=iPr and 2,4,6-Me3 C6 H2 (Mes)) afforded bicyclo[1.1.0]pentaphosphanes (1-R, R=iPr and Mes), showing an unsymmetric "butterfly" structure. The same products 1-R were formed from K[CpAr ] and [P5 R2 ][GaCl4 ]. The cationic complexes [CpAr Co(η4 -P5 R2 )][GaCl4 ] (2-R[GaCl4 ], R=iPr and Cy) and [(CpAr Ni)2 (η3:3 -P5 R2 )][GaCl4 ] (3-R[GaCl4 ]) were obtained from [P5 R2 ][GaCl4 ] and [CpAr M(μ-Br)]2 (M=Co and Ni) as well as by using low-valent "CpAr MI " sources. Anion metathesis of 2-R[GaCl4 ] and 3-R[GaCl4 ] was achieved with Na[BArF24 ]. The P5 framework of the resulting salts 2-R[BArF24 ] can be further functionalized with nucleophiles. Thus reactions with [Et4 N]X (X=CN and Cl) give unprecedented cyano- and chloro-functionalized complexes, while organo-functionalization was achieved with CyMgCl.

Metalate-Mediated Functionalization of P4 by Trapping Anionic [Cp*Fe(CO)2(η1-P4)]- with Lewis Acids

The development of selective functionalization strategies of white phosphorus (P4) is important to avoid the current chlorinated intermediates. The use of transition metals (TMs) could lead to catalytic procedures, but these are severely hampered by the high reactivity and unpredictable nature of the tetrahedron. Herein, we report selective first steps by reacting P4 with a metal anion [Cp*Fe(CO)2]- (Cp*=C5(CH3)5), which, in the presence of bulky Lewis acids (LA; B(C6F5)3 or BPh3), leads to unique TM-substituted LA-stabilized bicyclo[1.1.0]tetraphosphabutanide anions [Cp*Fe(CO)2(η1-P4⋅LA)]-. Their P-nucleophilic site can be subsequently protonated to afford the transient LA-free neutral butterflies exo,endo- and exo,exo-Cp*Fe- (CO)2(η1-P4H), allowing controllable stepwise metalate-mediated functionalization of P4.

Selective [3+1] Fragmentations of P4 by "P" Transfer from a Lewis Acid Stabilized [RP4 ]- Butterfly Anion

Two [3+1] fragmentations of the Lewis acid stabilized bicyclo[1.1.0]tetraphosphabutanide Li[Mes*P₄ ⋅ BPh₃ ] (Mes*=2,4,6-tBu₃ C₆ H₂ ) are reported. The reactions proceed by extrusion of a P₁ fragment, induced by either an imidazolium salt or phenylisocyanate, with release of the transient triphosphirene Mes*P₃ , which was isolated as a dimer and trapped by 1,3-cyclohexadiene as a Diels-Alder adduct. DFT quantum chemical computations were used to delineate the reaction mechanisms. These unprecedented pathways grant access to both P₁ - and P₃ -containing organophosphorus compounds in two simple steps from white phosphorus.

Stabilization and Transfer of the Transient [Mes*P4](-) Butterfly Anion Using BPh3

The transient bicyclo[1.1.0]tetraphosphabutane anion, generated from white phosphorus (P4) and Mes*Li (Mes*=2,4,6-tBu3C6H2), can be trapped by BPh3 in THF. This Lewis acid stabilized anion can be used as an [RP4](-) transfer agent, reacting cleanly with neutral Lewis acids (B(C6F5)3, BH3, and W(CO)5) to afford unique singly and doubly coordinated butterfly anions, and with the trityl cation to form a neutral, nonsymmetrical, all-carbon-substituted P4  derivative. This reaction path enables a simple, stepwise functionalization of white phosphorus.

A neutral tetraphosphacyclobutadiene ligand in cobalt(I) complexes

The unusual reactivity of the newly synthesized β-diketiminato cobalt(I) complexes, [(L(Dep)Co)2] (2 a, L(Dep)=CH[C(Me)N(2,6-Et2C6H3)]2) and [L(Dipp)Co⋅toluene] (2 b, L(Dipp)=CH[CHN(2,6-(i)Pr2C6H3)]2), toward white phosphorus was investigated, affording the first cobalt(I) complexes [(L(Dep)Co)2(μ2:η(4),η(4)-P4)] (3 a) and [(L(Dipp)Co)2(μ2:η(4),η(4)-P4)] (3 b) bearing the neutral cyclo-P4 ligand with a rectangular-planar structure. The redox chemistry of 3 a and 3 b was studied by cyclic voltammetry and their chemical reduction with one molar equivalent of potassium graphite led to the isolation of [(L(Dep)Co)2(μ2:η(4),η(4)-P4)][K(dme)4] (4 a) and [(L(Dipp)Co)2(μ2:η(4),η(4)-P4)][K(dme)4] (4 b). Unexpectedly, the monoanionic Co2P4 core in 4 a and 4 b, respectively, contains the two-electron-reduced cyclo-P4(2-) ligand with a square-planar structure and mixed-valent cobalt(I,II) sites. The electronic structures of 3 a, 3 b, 4 a, and 4 b were elucidated by NMR and EPR spectroscopy as well as magnetic measurements and are in agreement with results of broken-symmetry DFT calculations.
