Abstract
A key challenge to the effective utilization of solar energy is to promote efficient photoinduced charge transfer, specifically avoiding unproductive, circuitous electron-transfer pathways and optimizing the kinetics of charge separation and recombination. We hypothesize that one way to address this challenge is to develop a fundamental understanding of how to initiate and control directional photoinduced charge transfer, particularly for earth-abundant first-row transition-metal coordination complexes, which typically suffer from relatively short excited-state lifetimes. Here, we report a series of functionalized heteroleptic copper(I)bis(phenanthroline) complexes, which have allowed us to investigate the directionality of intramolecular photoinduced metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) as a function of the substituent Hammett parameter. Ultrafast transient absorption suggests a complicated interplay of MLCT localization and solvent interaction with the Cu(II) center of the MLCT state. This work provides a set of design principles for directional charge transfer in earth-abundant complexes and can be used to efficiently design pathways for connecting the molecular modules to catalysts or electrodes and integration into systems for light-driven catalysis.

Abstract
In this work, we fabricated a versatile and noble metal free copper-based heterogeneous photocatalyst, representing a green shift away from precious group metals such as Ir, Ru, Pt, which have been widely utilized as photocatalysts. The successfully synthesized and characterized copper photocatalyst was employed to establish a cross dehydrogenative coupling via C-H activation between tertiary amines and carbon nucleophiles. The highly efficient copper-based photocatalyst was characterized by numerous physico-chemical techniques, which confirmed its successful formation as well as its high activity. Inductively coupled plasma (ICP-OES) analysis revealed that the composite Cu@Xantphos@ASMNPs had a very high loading of 0.423 mmol g-1 of copper. The magnetic Cu@Xantphos@ASMNPs were utilized as a potential heterogeneous photocatalyst for the very facile and regioselective conversion of aryl tetrahydroqinoline to the respective nitroalkyl aryl tetrahydroisoquinoline in high yield using air as an oxidant and methanol as a green solvent with irradiation with visible light under mild reaction conditions. Additionally, the catalyst shows exceptional chemical stability and reusability without any agglomeration even after several cycles of use, which is one of the key features of this material, rendering it a potential candidate from economic and environmental perspectives.

Abstract
The inertness of chloroalkanes has precluded them as coupling partners for cross-coupling reactions. Herein we disclose a general strategy for the activation of inert alkyl chlorides through photoredox catalysis and their use as coupling partners with alkenes. The catalytic system is formed by [Ni(OTf)(Py2 Ts tacn)](OTf) (1Ni ), which is responsible for the Csp3 -Cl bond activation, and [Ir(NMe2 bpy)(ppy)2 ]PF6, (PCIr NMe2 ), which is the photoredox catalyst. Combined experimental and theoretical studies show an in situ photogenerated NiI intermediate ([Ni(Py2 Ts tacn)]+ ) which is catalytically competent for the Csp3 -Cl bond cleavage via a SN 2 mechanism for primary alkyl chlorides, forming carbon-centered free radicals, which react with the olefin leading to the formation of the Csp3 -Csp3 bond. These results suggest inert alkyl chlorides can be electrophiles for developing new intermolecular strategies in which low-valent aminopyridine nickel complexes act as key catalytic species.

Abstract
CO2 reduction through artificial photosynthesis represents a prominent strategy toward the conversion of solar energy into fuels or useful chemical feedstocks. In such configuration, designing highly efficient chromophores comprising earth-abundant elements is essential for both light harvesting and electron transfer. Herein, we report that a copper purpurin complex bearing an additional redox-active center in natural organic chromophores is capable to shift the reduction potential 540 mV more negative than its organic dye component. When this copper photosensitizer is employed with an iron porphyrin as the catalyst and 1,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzo[d]imidazole as the sacrificial reductant, the system achieves over 16100 turnover number of CO from CO2 with a 95% selectivity (CO vs H2) under visible-light irradiation, which is among the highest reported for a homogeneous noble metal-free system. This work may open up an effective approach for the rational design of highly efficient chromophores in artificial photosynthesis.

Abstract
A systematic series of four novel homo‐ and heteroleptic CuI photosensitizers based on tetradentate 1,10‐phenanthroline ligands of the type X^N^N^X containing two additional donor moieties in the 2,9‐position (X=SMe or OMe) were designed. Their solid‐state structures were assessed by X‐ray diffraction. Cyclic voltammetry, UV‐vis absorption, emission and X‐ray absorption spectroscopy were then used to determine their electrochemical, photophysical and structural features in solution. Following, time‐resolved X‐ray absorption spectroscopy in the picosecond time scale, coupled with time‐dependent density functional theory calculations, provided in‐depth information on the excited state electron configurations. For the first time, a significant shortening of the Cu−X distance and a change in the coordination mode to a pentacoordinated geometry is shown in the excited states of the two homoleptic complexes. These findings are important with respect to a precise understanding of the excited state structures and a further stabilization of this type of photosensitizers.

Abstract
A series of seven homoleptic CuI complexes based on hetero-bidentate P^N ligands was synthesized and comprehensively characterized. In order to study structure-property relationships, the type, size, number and configuration of substituents at the phosphinooxazoline (phox) ligands were systematically varied. To this end, a combination of X-ray diffraction, NMR spectroscopy, steady-state absorption and emission spectroscopy, time-resolved emission spectroscopy, quenching experiments and cyclic voltammetry was used to assess the photophysical and electrochemical properties. Furthermore, time-dependent density functional theory calculations were applied to also analyze the excited state structures and characteristics. Surprisingly, a strong dependency on the chirality of the respective P^N ligand was found, whereas the specific kind and size of the different substituents has only a minor impact on the properties in solution. Most importantly, all complexes except C3 are photostable in solution and show fully reversible redox processes. Sacrificial reductants were applied to demonstrate a successful electron transfer upon light irradiation. These properties render this class of photosensitizers as potential candidates for solar energy conversion issues.

Imidazo-Phenanthroline Ligands as a Convenient Modular Platform for the Preparation of Heteroleptic Cu(I) Photosensitizers. INORGANICS 2018. Abstract
The capture and storage of solar energy is a promising option to overcome current energy issues. To put such systems into practice, molecular photosensitizers should be based on abundant metals and possess a strong absorption capability for visible light. Therefore, a systematic series of four novel heteroleptic Cu(I) complexes of the type [(P^P)Cu(N^N)]+ (with P^P = xantphos and N^N = different diimine ligands) has been prepared. As an essential feature, these copper photosensitizers contain an imidazole moiety at the backbone of the diimine ligand, which increases the aromatic π-system compared to phenanthroline type ligands. Moreover, 2-(4-bromophenyl)-1-phenyl-1H-imidazo-[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline was used as a starting point and modular platform for gradually extended diimine ligands. Suzuki cross-coupling was applied to introduce different kind of substituents in the back of this ligand. Afterwards, a combination of NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, X-ray analysis, cyclic voltammetry, UV/vis and emission spectroscopy was used to investigate the structural, electrochemical and photophysical properties of these compounds. As a result, a reversible reduction, strongly increased extinction coefficients and significantly redshifted absorption maxima (>20 nm) were found compared to traditional Cu(I) photosensitizers without an imidazo moiety. Moreover, these compounds show a bright emission in the solid state.

Abstract
The development of organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) and the use of emitting molecules have strongly stimulated scientific research of emitting compounds. In particular, for OLEDs it is required to harvest all singlet and triplet excitons that are generated in the emission layer. This can be achieved using the so-called triplet harvesting mechanism. However, the materials to be applied are based on high-cost rare metals and therefore, it has been proposed already more than one decade ago by our group to use the effect of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) to harvest all generated excitons in the lowest excited singlet state S1 . In this situation, the resulting emission is an S1 →S0 fluorescence, though a delayed one. Hence, this mechanism represents the singlet harvesting mechanism. Using this effect, high-cost and strong SOC-carrying rare metals are not required. This mechanism can very effectively be realized by use of CuI or AgI complexes and even by purely organic molecules. In this investigation, we focus on photoluminescence properties and on crucial requirements for designing CuI and AgI materials that exhibit short TADF decay times at high emission quantum yields. The decay times should be as short as possible to minimize non-radiative quenching and, in particular, chemical reactions that frequently occur in the excited state. Thus, a short TADF decay time can strongly increase the material's long-term stability. Here, we study crucial parameters and analyze their impact on the TADF decay time. For example, the energy separation ΔE(S1 -T1 ) between the lowest excited singlet state S1 and the triplet state T1 should be small. Accordingly, we present detailed photophysical properties of two case-study materials designed to exhibit a large ΔE(S1 -T1 ) value of 1000 cm-1 (120 meV) and, for comparison, a small one of 370 cm-1 (46 meV). From these studies-extended by investigations of many other CuI TADF compounds-we can conclude that just small ΔE(S1 -T1 ) is not a sufficient requirement for short TADF decay times. High allowedness of the transition from the emitting S1 state to the electronic ground state S0 , expressed by the radiative rate kr (S1 →S0 ) or the oscillator strength f(S1 →S0 ), is also very important. However, mostly small ΔE(S1 -T1 ) is related to small kr (S1 →S0 ). This relation results from an experimental investigation of a large number of CuI complexes and basic quantum mechanical considerations. As a consequence, a reduction of τ(TADF) to below a few μs might be problematic. However, new materials can be designed for which this disadvantage is not prevailing. A new TADF compound, Ag(dbp)(P2 -nCB) (with dbp=2,9-di-n-butyl-1,10-phenanthroline and P2 -nCB=bis-(diphenylphosphine)-nido-carborane) seems to represent such an example. Accordingly, this material shows TADF record properties, such as short TADF decay time at high emission quantum yield. These properties are based (i) on geometry optimizations of the AgI complex for a fast radiative S1 →S0 rate and (ii) on restricting the extent of geometry reorganizations after excitation for reducing non-radiative relaxation and emission quenching. Indeed, we could design a TADF material with breakthrough properties showing τ(TADF)=1.4 μs at 100 % emission quantum yield.

Abstract
Driven by the intention to improve classic heteroleptic copper photosensitizers two novel Cu(I) complexes applying a hetero-bidentate P^N ligand were prepared. A combined photophysical, electrochemical, and theoretical study gives insights into structure-activity relationships and revealed an increased absorptivity. Both complexes were tested for the light-driven production of H2 .

Abstract
Hydrogen gas is produced photocatalytically using 470 nm light, PVP-coated carbon quantum dots (CQDs) as the photosensitizer, and nickel nanoparticles (NiNPs) as the catalyst. The effect of the amount of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) on the ability of the CQD/NiNP composites to catalyze proton reduction was studied. A maximum of 330 mmols H2/g CQD is produced using 68 μg ml-1 of CQDs and 6 μg ml-1 of NiNPs, with activity persisting for 4 h when 20 wt%-PVP-coated CQDs were used. The H2 production quantum yield under these conditions is 6%. It was found that composites having higher weight percent PVP had decreased rates of H2 production, but increased duration. Increasing the weight percent of PVP coating also increases the fluorescence quantum yield of CQDs. Fluorescence quenching titrations reveal that H2 production could occur by either a reductive or oxidative quenching mechanism. The nanomaterials, prepared using simple methods, are used as the photosensitizer and catalyst in the proton reduction system that operates using visible light.

Abstract
A series of CuI photosensitizers was synthesized, characterized, and investigated for photocatalytic H2 evolution from water. A structure-property correlation was established for their catalytic activity and photophysical properties, which was further elaborated by DFT calculations. A new CuI photosensitizer (Cu-TPAPhen) with triphenylamine-substituted phenanthroline ligands showed unprecedentedly high turnover numbers of 19 000 when tested in combination with triethylamine as a sacrificial reagent and colloidal Pt as a H2 evolution catalyst. This work paves the way toward cheap metal-based photosensitizers which can replace noble-metal complexes in photocatalytic systems.

Abstract
A new, general reaction scheme for photocatalytic hydrogen production is presented based on oxidative quenching of a homoleptic copper(I) bis-1,10-phenanthroline photosensitizer (PS) by 1-methyl-4-phenyl-pyridinium (MPP(+) ) as the electron relay and subsequent regeneration of the so formed copper(II) complex by a sacrificial electron donor. Electron transfer from the relay to various cobalt based water reduction catalysts and subsequent H2 production was shown to close the catalytic cycle. Transient absorption experiments unambiguously confirmed the proposed pathway, both the oxidative quenching and subsequent regeneration of oxidized PS. Photocatalytic test runs further confirmed the role of MPP(+) and up to 10 turnovers were achieved in the relay. The performance limiting factor of the system was shown to be the decomplexation of the copper PS. Quantum yields of the system were 0.03 for H2 production, but 0.6 for MPP(.) formation, clearly indicating that unproductive pathways still prevail.

Abstract
The complex [Ni(bpy)3](2+) (bpy=2,2'-bipyridine) is an active catalyst for visible-light-driven H2 production from water when employed with [Ir(dfppy)2 (Hdcbpy)] [dfppy=2-(3,4-difluorophenyl)pyridine, Hdcbpy=4-carboxy-2,2'-bipyridine-4'-carboxylate] as the photosensitizer and triethanolamine as the sacrificial electron donor. The highest turnover number of 520 with respect to the nickel(II) catalyst is obtained in a 8:2 acetonitrile/water solution at pH 9. The H2 -evolution system is more stable after the addition of an extra free bpy ligand, owing to faster catalyst regeneration. The photocatalytic results demonstrate that the nickel(II) polypyridyl catalyst can act as a more effective catalyst than the commonly utilized [Co(bpy)3 ](2+). This study may offer a new paradigm for constructing simple and noble-metal-free catalysts for photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Abstract
Four heteroleptic copper(I) complexes containing phenanthroline and monoanionic nido-carborane-diphosphine ligands have been prepared and structurally characterized by various spectroscopic techniques and X-ray diffraction. These complexes exhibit intense absorptions in the visible range and excited-state lifetimes on the microsecond scale. Their application in visible-light-induced cross-dehydrogenative coupling reactions was investigated. Preliminary studies showed that one of the four copper(I) complexes is an efficient catalyst for photoinduced oxidative C-H functionalization using oxygen as oxidant. Furthermore, α-functionalized tertiary amines were obtained in good-to-excellent yields by light irradiation (λ>420 nm) of a mixture of our Cu(I) complex, tertiary amines, and a variety of nucleophiles (nitroalkane, acetone, or indoles) under aerobic conditions. Electron paramagnetic resonance measurements provided evidence for the formation of superoxide radical anions (O2(-⋅)) rather than singlet oxygen ((1)O2) during these photocatalytic reactions.

Abstract
A Ni complex with internal bases that contain bipyridine-derived ligands, [Ni(L)2 (H2 O)2 ](BF4 )2 ([1](BF4 )2 , L=2-(2-pyridyl)-1,8-naphthyridine), and a reference complex that bears analogous bipyridine-derived ligands but without an internal base, [Ni(L')3 ](BF4 )2 ([2](BF4 )2 , L'=2-(2-pyridyl)quinoline), were synthesized and characterized. The electrochemical properties of these complexes were studied in CH3 CN, H2 O, and a mixture of EtOH/H2 O. The fluorescence spectroscopic studies suggest that both dynamic and the sphere-of-action static quenching exist in the fluorescein Fl(2-) /[1](2+) and Fl(2-) /[2](2+) systems. These noble-metal-free molecular systems were studied for photocatalytic H2 generation. Under optimal conditions, the turnover number of H2 evolution reaches 3230 based on [1](2+) , whereas [2](2+) displays only approximately one third of the turnover of [1](2+) . A plausible mechanism for the catalytic H2 generation by [1](2+) is presented based on DFT calculations.

Abstract
Four different heteroleptic [Cu(N^N)(P^P)]PF6 complexes, which combine classical bidentate diimine ligands and sterically demanding diphosphine ligands, are studied by a combination of ultrafast time-resolved spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations. The light-induced excited state processes, accompanied by a structural change, are discussed with respect to the application of these complexes as a new class of noble-metal-free photosensitizers in proton reducing systems. In particular, the influence of different substituents in the ligand backbone on the photophysical properties is highlighted.
