Abstract
Adequate hole mobility is the prerequisite for dopant-free polymeric hole-transport materials (HTMs). Constraining the configurational variation of polymer chains to afford a rigid and planar backbone can reduce unfavorable reorganization energy and improve hole mobility. Herein, a noncovalent conformational locking via S-O secondary interaction is exploited in a phenanthrocarbazole (PC) based polymeric HTM, PC6, to fix the molecular geometry and significantly reduce reorganization energy. Systematic studies on structurally explicit repeats to targeted polymers reveals that the broad and planar backbone of PC remarkably enhances π-π stacking of adjacent polymers, facilitating intermolecular charge transfer greatly. The inserted "Lewis soft" oxygen atoms passivate the trap sites efficiently at the perovskite/HTM interface and further suppress interfacial recombination. Consequently, a PSC employing PC6 as a dopant-free HTM offers an excellent power conversion efficiency of 22.2 % and significantly improved longevity, rendering it as one of the best PSCs based on dopant-free HTMs.

Abstract
The utilization of solar energy to produce hydrogen from water is showing increased importance and desirability in the field of artificial photosynthesis to produce clean and sustainable fuels. In a typical three-component dye-sensitized semiconductor system for photocatalysis, the dye sensitizer plays an essential role of energy antenna for harvesting visible light and promoting the reduction reaction to generate hydrogen. In recent decades, a lot of attention has focused on metal-free organic sensitizers, which have the advantages of low cost, high molar extinction coefficient, good modifiability and, most importantly, ability to avoid the use of noble metal ions. This Review enumerates the design strategies, specific properties and photocatalytic performances of metal-free sensitizers in the past 30 years and concludes their evolution process. The advantages of different types of metal-free sensitizers are highlighted and the instructively enlightening experiences are systematic summarized.

Abstract
Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on CuII/I bipyridyl or phenanthroline complexes as redox shuttles have achieved very high open-circuit voltages (VOC , more than 1 V). However, their short-circuit photocurrent density (JSC ) has remained modest. Increasing the JSC is expected to extend the spectral response of sensitizers to the red or NIR region while maintaining efficient electron injection in the mesoscopic TiO2 film and fast regeneration by the CuI complex. Herein, we report two new D-A-π-A-featured sensitizers termed HY63 and HY64, which employ benzothiadiazole (BT) or phenanthrene-fused-quinoxaline (PFQ), respectively, as the auxiliary electron-withdrawing acceptor moiety. Despite their very similar energy levels and absorption onsets, HY64-based DSSCs outperform their HY63 counterparts, achieving a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 12.5 %. PFQ is superior to BT in reducing charge recombination resulting in the near-quantitative collection of photogenerated charge carriers.

Abstract
Dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) has been attractive to scientific community due to its eco-friendliness, ease of fabrication, and vivid colorful property etc. Among various kinds of sensitizers, such as metal-free organic molecules, metal-complex, natural dyes etc., porphyrin is one of the most promising sensitizers for DSSC. The first application of porphyrin for sensitization of nanocrystaline TiO2 can be traced back to 1993 by using [tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrinato] zinc(II) with an overall conversion efficiency of 2.6%. After 10 years efforts, Officer and Grätzel improved this value to 7.1%. Later in 2009, by constructing porphyrin sensitizer with an arylamine as donor and a benzoic acid as acceptor, Diau and Yeh demonstrated that this donor-acceptor framwork porphyrins could attain remarkable photovoltaic performance. Now the highest efficiencies of DSSC are dominated by donor-acceptor porphyrins, reaching remarkable values around 13.0% with cobalt-based electrolytes. This achievement is largely contributed by the structural development of donor and acceptor groups within push-pull framwork. In this review, we summarized and discussed the developement of donor-acceptor porphyrin sensitizers and their applications in DSSC. A dicussion of the correlation between molecular structure and the spectral and photovoltaic properties is the major target of this review. Deeply dicussion of the substitution group, especially on porphyrin's meso-position were presented. Furthermore, the limitations of DSSC for commercialization, such as the long-term stability, sophisticated synthesis procedures for high efficiency dye etc., have also been discussed.

Abstract
A series of near-infrared (NIR)-responsive unsymmetrical squaraine dyes (ISQ1-3) incorporating a fused indenoquinaldine-based donor have been designed and synthesized. C12 alkyl chains were incorporated at the sp3 -hybridized carbon center of the indene unit of the indenoquinaldine in an out-of-plane orientation to control dye aggregation on the surface of titanium dioxide, and indole (ISQ1), benzo[e]indole (ISQ2), and quinoline (ISQ3) moieties were included as the donor component bearing the anchoring carboxy group to extend the absorption in the NIR region and to systematically study the effect of the electronic modification on the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC). All the dyes exhibit intense absorption (ϵ≥105 m-1 cm-1 ) in the NIR region, and the dye-adsorbed TiO2 films exhibit broad panchromatic absorption. The incident photon-to-current efficiency (IPCE) spectrum of the ISQ3-based DSSC device displays a panchromatic IPCE response up to 880 nm. Additionally, the ISQ3-sensitized device provides the best efficiency of 4.15 % with a short circuit current density (JSC ) of 10.02 mA cm-2 , open-circuit voltage (VOC ) of 0.58 V, and fill factor (ff) of 72 % in the presence of 10 equivalents of 3α,7α-dihydroxy-5β-cholanic acid (CDCA). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis showed attenuated charge recombination in the ISQ3-sensitized DSSC, which contributes to its higher value of VOC compared with the other dyes.

Abstract
The synthesis, characterization, and photovoltaic performance of a series of indacenodithiophene (IDT)-based D-π-A organic dyes with varying electron-accepting units is presented. By control of the electron affinity, perfectly matching energy levels were achieved with a copper(I/II)-based redox electrolyte, reaching a high open-circuit voltage (>1.1 V) while harvesting a large fraction of solar photons at the same time. Besides achieving high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs), that is, 11.2 % under standard AM 1.5 G sunlight, and 28.4 % under a 1000 lux fluorescent light tube, this work provides a possible method for the design and fabrication of low-cost highly efficient DSCs.

A series of molecularly engineered and novel dyes WS1, WS2, WS3, and WS4, based on the D35 donor, 1-(4-hexylphenyl)-2,5-di(thiophen-2-yl)-1H-pyrrole and 4-(4-hexylphenyl)-4H-dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole as π-conjugating linkers, were synthesized and compared to the well-known LEG4 dye. The performance of the dyes was investigated in combination with an electrolyte based on Co(II/III) complexes as redox shuttles. The electron recombination between the redox mediators in the electrolyte and the TiO2 interface decreases upon the introduction of 4-hexylybenzene entities on the 2,5-di(thiophen-2-yl)-1H-pyrrole and 4H-dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole linker units, probably because of steric hindrance. The open circuit photovoltage of WS1-, WS2-, WS3-, and WS4-based devices in combination with the Co(II/III)-based electrolyte are consistently higher than those based on a I-/I3 - electrolyte by 105, 147, 167, and 75 mV, respectively. The WS3-based devices show the highest power conversion efficiency of 7.4% at AM 1.5 G 100 mW/cm2 illumination mainly attributable to the high open-circuit voltage (V OC).

Abstract
Perylene derivatives are a family of well-known organic electron-transporting materials with excellent photochemical and thermal stabilities, and have been widely used in various optoelectronic devices. In this work, two diphenylamine functionalized N-annulated perylenes are reported as hole-transporting materials (HTMs) for perovskite solar cells. Through joint theoretical and experimental studies, the HTM employing a methoxyphenyl lateral substituent is found to feature a closer stacking distance and better aggregate connectivity in the solid film than its analogue with the bulky 2-hexyldecyl lateral substituent, contributing to a higher hole mobility and a remarkably enhanced device performance of perovskite solar cells. This work demonstrates the significant influence of lateral substituents of HTMs on the intermolecular packing and solid microstructure, giving a clear insight on the molecular design of high-performance organic semiconductors.

Abstract
We report four NIR photosensitizers employing a low-recombination donor and a thieno[3,4-b]thiophene (3,4-TT) π bridge for use in dye-sensitized solar cells. The inclusion of electron rich π spacers red-shifts the dye absorbance with solution absorption onsets reaching 700 nm. Dyes were found to have suitable energy levels for rapid electron transfers using cyclic voltammetry and UV/Vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy. Computationally optimized ground-state geometries show an increased torsional angle between π spacer and π bridge brought about by an added alkyl chain. This results in a widened optical band gap and increased oxidation potentials owing to a weakening of the electron-accepting ability of 3,4-TT for solution-state measurements. Interestingly in terms of device parameters, the alkylated π spacer had a nearly identical incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) curve onset when compared to a non-alkylated analogue, suggesting more similar dye geometries on the surface of TiO2 . Elevated short-circuit current density (JSC ) values and comparable open-circuit voltage (VOC ) values were observed in the alkylated-π-spacer-dye-based devices with power conversion efficiencies up to 6.8 % observed with IPCE onsets exceeding 800 nm.

Abstract
A hydroxamic acid group has been employed for the first time as an anchoring group for cobalt-based dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The porphyrin dye YD2-o-C8HA including a hydroxamic acid anchoring group exhibited a power conversion efficiency (η) of 6.4 %, which is close to that of YD2-o-C8, a representative porphyrin dye incorporating a conventional carboxylic acid. More importantly, YD2-o-C8HA was found to be superior to YD2-o-C8 in terms of both binding ability to TiO2 and durability of cobalt-based DSSCs. Notably, YD2-o-C8HA photocells revealed a higher η-value (4.1 %) than YD2-o-C8 (2.8 %) after 500 h illumination. These results suggest that the hydroxamic acid can be used for DSSCs with other transition-metal-based redox shuttle to ensure high cell durability as well as excellent photovoltaic performance.

Abstract
Continuous studies on the use of a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon as the central block of an organic photosensitizer have brought forth a new opportunity toward efficiency enhancement of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). In this paper, a nonacyclic aromatic hydrocarbon 9,19-dihydrodinaphtho[3,2,1-de:3',2',1'-op]pentacene, tethered with four 4-hexylphenyl solubilizing groups is reported. The novel chromophore 9,9-19-19-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-9,19-dihydrodinaphtho[3,2,1-de:3',2',1'-op]pentacene is further functionalized with diarylamines and 4-(7-ethynylbenzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazol-4-yl)benzoic acid to produce two donor-acceptor (D-A) organic photosensitizers, achieving good power conversion efficiencies up to 10.2% in DSCs.

Abstract
The continuing efforts to develop novel polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and exploit them as building blocks to create organic donor-acceptor (D-A) dyes with impressive excited-state features should offer an excellent means by which to improve the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). To this end, a nonacyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, N-annulated benzoindenopentaphene (NBIP) was tethered with multiple solubilizing groups, including NBIPs with one 2-hexyldecyl, with one 2-hexyldecyloxy, and with four 4-hexylphenyl substituents. The side- and end-chain-functionalized NBIPs can be conveniently prepared in excellent yield, and further cross-coupled with 4-(7-ethynylbenzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazol-4-yl)benzoic acid to afford a metal-free D-A dye, which achieves a high power conversion efficiency of 12.6 % under AM1.5G illumination in DSSCs without need for any coadsorbent.

Abstract
Twisted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were prepared by the successive rhodium-catalyzed annulation and dehydrogenative cyclization of bis(arylethynyl)arenes with di-tert-butylbiphenyl-2-ylboronic acid. The molecular structures of the PAHs were determined by single-crystal XRD analysis. The PAHs showed up to four fjord regions, and the twisting angle was 46.7°. The nonplanarity (NP) and harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity (HOMA) were calculated by using the structural data obtained from XRD analysis. The PAHs derived from dialkynyl naphthalenes showed low planarity and HOMA of the central ring. The optical properties of the PAHs were investigated by UV/Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy analyses. The absorption and emission maxima of the PAHs with a larger planar region appeared at a longer wavelength. DFT calculations support that the absorption band at λ≈450 nm can be mainly attributed to the HOMO-LUMO transition.
