A Terrylene Bisimide based Universal Host for Aromatic Guests to Derive Contact Surface-Dependent Dispersion Energies

π-π interactions are among the most important intermolecular interactions in supramolecular systems. Here we determine experimentally a universal parameter for their strength that is simply based on the size of the interacting contact surfaces. Toward this goal we designed a new cyclophane based on terrylene bisimide (TBI) π-walls connected by para-xylylene spacer units. With its extended π-surface this cyclophane proved to be an excellent and universal host for the complexation of π-conjugated guests, including small and large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as well as dye molecules. The observed binding constants range up to 108 M-1 and show a linear dependence on the 2D area size of the guest molecules. This correlation can be used for the prediction of binding constants and for the design of new host-guest systems based on the herewith derived universal Gibbs interaction energy parameter of 0.31 kJ/molÅ2 in chloroform.

Macrocycle-Based Crystalline Supramolecular Assemblies Built with Intermolecular Charge-Transfer Interactions

Synthetic macrocycles have served as principal tools for supramolecular chemistry, have greatly extended the scope of organic charge transfer (CT) complexes, and have proved to be of great practical value in the solid state during the past few years. In this Minireview, we summarize the research progress on the macrocycle-based crystalline supramolecular assemblies primarily driven by intermolecular CT interactions (a.k.a. macrocycle-based crystalline CT assemblies, MCCAs for short), which are classified by their donor-acceptor (D-A) constituent elements, including simplex macrocyclic hosts, heterogeneous macrocyclic hosts, and host-guest D-A pairs. Particular attention will be focused on their diverse functions and applications, as well as the underlying CT mechanisms from the perspective of crystal engineering. Finally, the remaining challenges and prospects are outlined.

Manipulating Host-Guest Charge Transfer of a Water-Soluble Double-Cavity Cyclophane for NIR-II Photothermal Therapy

Water-soluble small organic photothermal agents (PTAs) over NIR-II biowindow (1000-1350 nm) are highly desirable, but the rarity greatly limits their applications. Based on a water-soluble double-cavity cyclophane GBox-4⁴⁺ , we report a class of host-guest charge transfer (CT) complexes as structurally uniform PTAs for NIR-II photothermal therapy. As a result of its high electron-deficiency, GBox-4⁴⁺ can bind different electron-rich planar guests with a 1 : 2 host/guest stoichiometry to readily tune the CT absorption band that extends to the NIR-II region. When using a diaminofluorene guest substituted with an oligoethylene glycol chain, the host-guest system realized both good biocompatibility and enhanced photothermal conversion at 1064 nm, and was then exploited as a high-efficiency NIR-II PTA for cancer cell and bacterial ablation. This work broadens the potential applications of host-guest cyclophane systems and provides a new access to bio-friendly NIR-II photoabsorbers with well-defined structures.

Oligothiophene-Ring-Strapped Perylene Bisimides: Functionalizable Coaxial Donor-Acceptor Macrocycles

Aesthetic designs from nature enable new knowledge to be gained and, at the same time, inspire scientific models. In this context, multicomponent macrocycles embody the advantage of precisely positioning the structural units to achieve efficient communication between them. However, the construction of a functionalizable macrocycle for ultrafast charge separation and stabilization has not been attempted. Herein, we report the synthesis, crystal structure, and transient absorption of a new functionalizable macrocycle consisting of an oligothiophene-ring-strapped perylene bisimide. Transient absorption results point to a sequential improvement in charge separation and stabilization from the macrocycle to the corresponding linear dimer and 2D polymer due to the unique design. Our macrocycle design with a supportive spatial arrangement of the donor and acceptor units will inspire the development of more complex synthetic systems with exciting electron-transfer and charge-separation features.

Intramolecular Energy and Solvent-Dependent Chirality Transfer within a BINOL-Perylene Hetero-Cyclophane

Multichromophoric macrocycles and cyclophanes are important supramolecular architectures for the elucidation of interchromophoric interactions originating from precise spatial organization. Herein, by combining an axially chiral binaphthol bisimide (BBI) and a bay-substituted conformationally labile twisted perylene bisimide (PBI) within a cyclophane of well-defined geometry, we report a chiral PBI hetero-cyclophane (BBI-PBI) that shows intramolecular energy and solvent-regulated chirality transfer from the BBI to the PBI subunit. Excellent spectral overlap and spatial arrangement of BBI and PBI lead to efficient excitation energy transfer and subsequent PBI emission with high quantum yield (80-98 %) in various solvents. In contrast, chirality transfer is strongly dependent on the respective solvent as revealed by circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. The combination of energy and chirality transfer affords a bright red circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) from the PBI chromophore by excitation of BBI.

The Pink Box: Exclusive Homochiral Aromatic Stacking in a Bis-perylene Diimide Macrocycle

This work showcases chiral complementarity in aromatic stacking interactions as an effective tool to optimize the chiroptical and electrochemical properties of perylene diimides (PDIs). PDIs are a notable class of robust dye molecules and their rich photo- and electrochemistry and potential chirality make them ideal organic building blocks for chiral optoelectronic materials. By exploiting the new bay connectivity of twisted PDIs, a dynamic bis-PDI macrocycle (the "Pink Box") is realized in which homochiral PDI-PDI π-π stacking interactions are switched on exclusively. Using a range of experimental and computational techniques, we uncover three important implications of the macrocycle's chiral complementarity for PDI optoelectronics. First, the homochiral intramolecular π-π interactions anchor the twisted PDI units, yielding enantiomers with half-lives extended over 400-fold, from minutes to days (in solution) or years (in the solid state). Second, homochiral H-type aggregation affords the macrocycle red-shifted circularly polarized luminescence and one of the highest dissymmetry factors of any small organic molecule in solution (glum = 10-2 at 675 nm). Finally, excellent through-space PDI-PDI π-orbital overlap stabilizes PDI reduced states, akin to covalent functionalization with electron-withdrawing groups.

Macrocyclic Donor-Acceptor Dyads Composed of Oligothiophene Half-Cycles and Perylene Bisimides

A series of donor-acceptor (D-A) macrocyclic dyads consisting of an electron-poor perylene bisimide (PBI) π-scaffold bridged with electron-rich α-oligothiophenes bearing four, five, six and seven thiophene units between the two phenyl-imide substituents has been synthesized and characterized by steady-state UV/Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry as well as transient absorption spectroscopy. Tying the oligothiophene strands in a conformationally fixed macrocyclic arrangement leads to a more rigid π-scaffold with vibronic fine structure in the respective absorption spectra. Electrochemical analysis disclosed charged state properties in solution which are strongly dependent on the degree of rigidification within the individual macrocycle. Investigation of the excited state dynamics revealed an oligothiophene bridge size-dependent fast charge transfer process for the macrocyclic dyads upon PBI subunit excitation.

A Calix[3]acridan-Based Host-Guest Cocrystal Exhibiting Efficient Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence

A supramolecular strategy to construct thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials through host-guest charge transfer interactions was proposed. Consequently, a new class of macrocycle namely calix[3]acridan was conveniently synthesized in 90 % yield. The host-guest cocrystal formed by calix[3]acridan and 1,2-dicyanobenzene exhibited efficient TADF properties due to intense intermolecular charge transfer interactions. Moreover, the spatially separated highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital resulted in a very small singlet-triplet energy gap of 0.014 eV and hence guaranteed an efficient reverse intersystem crossing for TADF. Especially, a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 70 % was achieved, and it represents the highest value among the reported intermolecular donor-acceptor TADF materials.

Fluorescein-bridged Perylene Bisimide Dimer for Use as Liquid Crystal: Studies on Mesomorphic and Fluorescence Properties

A novel fluorescein-bridged perylene bisimide (PBI) dimer for liquid crystal (LC) with geometrically symmetric structure was developed. The mesomorphic results indicated that the energetically stable and unstable conformers of fluorescein fragments could lead to the transformation of mesophases from a hexagonal columnar mesophase to an uncertain phase at 136.9 °C in heating, whilst a stable hexagonal columnar mesophase maintained between 175.6 °C and 58.6 °C in cooling. The selectively excited fluorescence characters in THF solution demonstrated that the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) effect between fluorescein fragments and PBI unites could provide a means to effectively impose strong fluorescence of the dimeric PBIs modified with suitable chromophore at the N-imide position, which alternatively serves as a platform for the further study of multi-functional PBI-based LCs.

Deracemization of Carbohelicenes by a Chiral Perylene Bisimide Cyclophane Template Catalyst

Deracemization describes the conversion of a racemic mixture of a chiral molecule into an enantioenriched mixture or an enantiopure compound without structural modifications. Herein, we report an inherently chiral perylene bisimide (PBI) cyclophane whose chiral pocket is capable of transforming a racemic mixture of [5]-helicene into an enantioenriched mixture with an enantiomeric excess of 66 %. UV/Vis and fluorescence titration studies reveal this cyclophane host composed of two helically twisted PBI dyes has high binding affinities for the respective homochiral carbohelicene guests, with outstanding binding constants of up to 3.9×10¹⁰  m^-1 for [4]-helicene. 2D NMR studies and single-crystal X-ray analysis demonstrate that the observed strong and enantioselective binding of homochiral carbohelicenes and the successful template-catalyzed deracemization of [5]-helicene can be explained by the enzyme-like perfect shape complementarity of the macrocyclic supramolecular host.

A fluorescent calix[4]arene with naphthalene units at the upper rim exhibits long fluorescence emission lifetime without fluorescence quenching

We synthesised a new compound with four naphthyl groups in the upper rims of calix[4]arene (1). Compared to the monomer unit, compound 1 has redshifted absorption and fluorescence, together with high fluorescence quantum yield and long fluorescence lifetime, which is extremely rare because long fluorescence lifetime emission tends to reduce the quantum yield. Single-crystal X-ray analysis and quantum calculations in the S1 state revealed π-π through-space interactions between naphthalene rings.

Naphthobox: a selective molecular box for planar aromatic cations

A molecular box with an electron-rich cavity, namely naphthobox, was contructed and showed selective binding to planar aromatic cations.

Discrete π Stack of a Tweezer-Shaped Naphthalenediimide-Anthracene Conjugate

The design and synthesis of a tweezer-shaped naphthalenediimide (NDI)-anthracene conjugate (2NDI) are reported. In the structure of the closed form (π_NDI ⋅⋅⋅π_NDI stack) of 2NDI, which was elucidated by single-crystal XRD, the existence of C-H⋅⋅⋅O hydrogen bonding involving the nearest carbonyl oxygen atom of an NDI unit was suggested. The tunability of π_NDI ⋅⋅⋅π_NDI interactions was studied by means of UV/Vis absorption, fluorescence and NMR spectroscopy and molecular modelling. This revealed that the π_NDI ⋅⋅⋅π_NDI interactions in 2NDI affect the absorption and emission properties depending on the temperature. Furthermore, in polar solvents, 2NDI prefers the stronger π_NDI ⋅⋅⋅π_NDI stack, whereas the π_NDI ⋅⋅⋅π_NDI interaction is diminished in nonpolar solvents. Importantly, the conformational variations of 2NDI can be reversibly switched by variation in temperature, and this suggests potential application for fluorogenic molecular switches upon temperature changes.

Quantitative Supramolecular Heterodimerization for Efficient Energy Transfer

The challenge of quantitatively forming self-assembled heterodimers without other equilibrium by-products is overcome through self-sorting favored by the introduction of designed shape-complementary moieties. Such a supramolecular strategy based on cucurbit[8]uril-directed dimerization is further applied to generate hetero-chromophore dimers quantitatively, leading to efficient energy transfer (>85 %) upon photoexcitation.

Ratiometric Detection of ATP by Fluorescent Cyclophanes with Bellows-Type Sensing Mechanism

Pyrene-based cyclophanes have been synthesized with the aim to realize a bellows-type sensing mechanism for the ratiometric detection of nucleotide concentrations in a buffered aqueous solution. The sensing mechanism involves the encapsulation of a nucleobase between two pyrene rings, which affects the monomer-excimer equilibrium of the receptor in the excited state. The nature of the spacer and its connection pattern to pyrene rings have been varied to achieve high selectivity for ATP. The 1,8-substituted pyrene-based cyclophane with the 2,2'-diaminodiethylamine spacer demonstrates the best selectivity for ATP showing a 50-fold increase in the monomer-excimer emission ratio upon saturation with the nucleotide. The receptor can detect ATP within the biological concentrations range over a wide pH range. NMR and spectroscopic studies have revealed the importance of hydrogen bonding and stacking interactions for achieving a required receptor selectivity. The probe has been successfully applied for the real-time monitoring of creatine kinase activity.

A Naphthalene Diimide Based Macrocycle Containing Quaternary Ammonium Groups: An Electron-Deficient Host for Aromatic Carboxylate Derivatives

Naphthalene diimide (NDI) compounds are widely used as electron acceptors in various applications. Herein, we combine NDI with quaternary ammonium groups for the synthesis of a highly electron-deficient linear compound 2 and macrocycle 3. The complexation studies of the water-soluble macrocycle 3 with aromatic di- and tetra- carboxylate anions in water were done using absorption, emission, ¹ H NMR and NOESY spectroscopic titrations. The NDI incorporated macrocycle 3 showed high binding affinities towards linear aromatic tetracarboxylate anions owing to the size and charge complementarity of the host-guest complex. Macrocycle 3 binds tetracarboxylate anion much better than dicarboxylate anions. Furthermore, the macrocycle 3 is solvated differently in acetonitrile and in water or dimethyl sulfoxide, which induces changes in conformation and photophysical properties. Such electron-deficient optically active macrocycles are useful for developing useful sensor materials.

Conformational Dynamics of Monomer- versus Dimer-like Features in a Naphthalenediimide-Based Conjugated Cyclophane

The design and synthesis of an enantiomeric pair of 1,8-diethynylanthracene-bridged naphthalenediimide (NDI)-based cyclophanes (Cyclo-NDIs) are reported. Each enantiomer of Cyclo-NDI exhibits a circularly polarized luminescence signal with a relatively large luminescence dissymmetry factor (g_lum =±8×10^-3 ). We have further investigated the modulation of through-space electronic communication between co-facially oriented NDIs in a discrete Cyclo-NDI with changes in the temperature. Tuning of the electronic communication results from the conformational transformation of monomer- versus dimer-like features of Cyclo-NDI, as confirmed by UV/Vis, fluorescence, circular dichroic, and NMR spectroscopic analysis. The temperature-dependent optical response in the Cyclo-NDI through the conformational transformation could be utilized as a highly sensitive and reversible optical thermometer in a wide temperature range (100 to -80 °C).

TiO2 @Perylene Diimide Full-Spectrum Photocatalysts via Semi-Core-Shell Structure

A semi-core-shell structure of perylene diimide (PDI) self-assembly coated with TiO₂ nanoparticles is constructed, in which nanoscale porous TiO₂ shell is formed and PDI self-assembly presented 1D structure. A full-spectrum photocatalyst is obtained using this structure to resolve a conundrum-TiO₂ does not exhibit visible-light photocatalytic activity while PDI does not exhibit ultraviolet photocatalytic activity. Furthermore, the synergistic interaction between TiO₂ and PDI enables the catalyst to improve its ultraviolet, visible-light, and full-spectrum performance. The interaction between TiO₂ and PDI leads to formation of some new stacking states along the Π-Π stacking direction and, as a consequence, electron transfer from PDI to TiO₂ suppresses the recombination of e^- /h⁺ and thus improves photocatalytic performance. But the stronger interaction in the interface between TiO₂ and PDI is not in favor of photocatalytic performance, which leads to rapid charge recombination due to more disordered stacking states. The study provides a theoretical direction for the study of core-shell structures with soft materials as a core, and an idea for efficient utilization of solar energy.

Naked-Eye Heterogeneous Sensing of Fluoride Ions by Co-Polymeric Nanosponge Systems Comprising Aromatic-Imide-Functionalized Nanocellulose and Branched Polyethyleneimine

Heterogeneous colorimetric sensors for fluoride ions were obtained by cross-linking TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNF) with chemically modified branched polyethyleneimine 25 kDa (bPEI). Functionalization of bPEI primary amino groups with aromatic anhydrides led to the formation of the corresponding mono- and bis-imides on the grafted polymers (f-bPEI). A microwave-assisted procedure allowed the optimization of the synthetic protocol by reducing reaction time from 17 h to 30 minutes. Hydrogels obtained by mixing different ratios of TOCNF, bPEI and f-bPEI were lyophilized and thermally treated at about 100 °C to promote the formation of amide bonds between the amino groups of poly-cationic polymers and the carboxylic groups of cellulose nanofibers. This approach generated a series of cellulose nanosponges S1-S3 which were characterized by FT-IR and by solid state ¹³ C CPMAS NMR. These sponge materials can act as colorimetric sensors for the selective naked-eye recognition of fluoride ions over chloride, phosphate and acetate ions at concentrations of up to 0.05 M in DMSO. Moreover, when the sponges were functionalized with perylene tetracarboxylic diimide, successful naked-eye detection was achieved with only 0.02 % w/w of chromophore units per gram of material.

Perylene bisimide with diphenylacrylonitrile on side-chain: strongly fluorescent liquid crystal with large pseudo Stokes shift based on AIE and FRET effect

A novel perylene bisimide (PBI) derivative with an AIE-active diphenylacrylonitrile unit positioned at the terminal N-imide position through a flexible spacer has been synthesized and characterized. The DSC, POM and XRD studies confirmed that it could self-assemble into a stable hexagonal columnar liquid-crystalline phase between 56 °C and 160 °C. This PBI derivative also exhibited strong fluorescence in solution, thin film and mesophase based on the cooperative mechanism of AIE and FRET between the diphenylacrylonitrile group and perylene moiety. The pseudo Stokes shift was as large as 283 nm, and the fluorescence quantum yields were as high as 0.62-0.79 in solution and 0.68-0.86 in solid state. This study provides a good strategy for converting the columnar liquid crystal with ACQ effect to one with the AIE effect, successfully filling the gap between the excellent columnar mesomorphic properties and strong fluorescence in solid state.
