Abstract
The exploration of near-infrared photoluminescence (PL) from atomically precise nanoclusters is currently a prominent area of interest owing to its importance in both fundamental research and diverse applications. In this work, we investigate the near-infrared (NIR) photoluminescence mechanisms of two structural isomers of atomically precise gold nanoclusters of 28 atoms protected by cyclohexanethiolate (CHT) ligands, i.e., Au28i(CHT)20 and Au28ii(CHT)20. Based on their structures, analysis of 3O2 (triplet oxygen) quenching of the nanocluster triplet states, temperature-dependent photophysical studies, and theoretical calculations, we have elucidated the intricate processes governing the photoluminescence of these isomeric nanoclusters. For Au28i(CHT)20, its emission characteristics are identified as phosphorescence plus thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) with a PL quantum yield (PLQY) of 0.3% in dichloromethane under ambient conditions. In contrast, the Au28ii(CHT)20 isomer exhibits exclusive phosphorescence with a PLQY of 3.7% in dichloromethane under ambient conditions. Theoretical simulations reveal a larger singlet (S1)-triplet (T1) gap in Au28ii than that in Au28i, and the higher T2 state plays a critical role in both isomers' photophysical processes. The insights derived from this investigation not only contribute to a more profound comprehension of the fundamental principles underlying the photoluminescence of atomically precise gold nanoclusters but also provide avenues for tailoring their optical properties for diverse applications.

Abstract
Understanding the origin of chirality in the nanostructured materials is essential for chiroptical and catalytic applications. Here we report a chiral AgCu superatomic cluster, [Ag22 Cu7 (C≡CR)16 (PPh3 )5 Cl6 ](PPh4 ), Ag22 Cu7 , protected by an achiral alkynyl ligand (HC≡CR: 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenylacetylene). Its crystal structure comprises a rare interpenetrating biicosahedral Ag17 Cu2 core, which is stabilized by four different types of motifs: one Cu(C≡CR)2 , four -C≡CR, two chlorides and one helical Ag5 Cu4 (C≡CR)10 (PPh3 )5 Cl4 . Structural analysis reveals that Ag22 Cu7 exhibits multiple chirality origins, including the metal core, the metal-ligand interface and the ligand layer. Furthermore, the circular dichroism spectra of R/S-Ag22 Cu7 are obtained by employing appropriate chiral molecules as optical enrichment agents. DFT calculations show that Ag22 Cu7 is an eight-electron superatom, confirm that the cluster is chirally active, and help to analyze the origins of the circular dichroism.

Abstract
A photoluminescent bimetallic cluster [Ag10 Cu6 (bdppthi)2 (C≡CPh)12 (MeOH)2 (H2 O)](ClO4 )4 (1, bdppthi=N,N'-bis(diphenylphosphanylmethyl)-tetrahydroimidazole} was synthesized from the PNNP type ligand bdppthi generated in-situ. Upon excitation at 365 nm, 1 exhibited strong phosphorescent emission at 630 nm, which was selectively quenched by NH3 in air or water. The sensing of NH3 was rapid and recoverable, with detection limits of 53 ppm (v/v) in N2 and 21 μmol/L (0.36 ppm, w/w) for NH3 ⋅ H2 O in water. Cluster 1 could potentially serve as a bifunctional chemical sensor for the efficient detection of ammonia in waste-gas and waste-water.

Abstract
A Au55 nanocluster with the composition of [Au55 (p-MBT)24 (Ph3 P)6 ](SbF6 )3 (p-MBT=4-methylbenzenethiolate) is synthesized via direct reduction of gold-phosphine and gold-thiolate precursors. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that this Au55 nanocluster features a face-centered cubic (fcc) Au55 kernel, different from the well-known two-shell cuboctahedral arrangement in Au55 (Ph3 P)12 Cl6 . The Au55 cluster shows a wide optical absorption band with optical energy gap (Eg =1.28 eV). It is found that the exclusion of chloride is crucial for the formation of the title cluster, otherwise rod-like [Au25 (SR)5 (PPh3 )10 Cl2 ]2+ is obtained. The strategy to run synthetic reaction in the absence of halide leads to new members of phosphine/thiolate co-protected metal nanoclusters. The Au55 nanocluster exhibits high catalytic activity and selectivity for electrochemical reduction of CO2 to CO; the Faradaic efficiency (FE) reaches 94.1 % at -0.6 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE).

Abstract
Structure evolution has become an effective way to assemble novel monolayer-protected metal nanomolecules. However, evolution with alkynyl-stabilized metal clusters still remains rarely explored. Herein, we present a carboranealkynyl-protected gold nanocluster [Au28 (C4 B10 H11 )12 (tht)8 ]3+ (Au28 , tht=tetrahydrothiophene) possessing an open-shell electronic structure with 13 free electrons, which was isolated by a facile self-reduction method with 9-HC≡C-closo-1,2-C2 B10 H11 as the two-in-one reducing and protecting agent. Notably, Au28 undergoes a complete transformation in methanol into a stable and smaller-sized nanocluster [Au23 (C4 B10 H11 )9 (tht)6 ]2+ (Au23 ) bearing 12 valence electrons and crystal-field-like split superatomic 1D orbitals. The transformation process was systematically monitored with ESI-MS and UV/Vis absorption spectra. Au28 and Au23 both display optical absorption covering the UV/Vis-NIR range and NIR emission, which facilitates their potential application in the biomedical and photocatalytic fields.

Abstract
Understanding the origin and structural basis of the photoluminescence (PL) phenomenon in thiolate-protected metal nanoclusters is of paramount importance for both fundamental science and practical applications. It remains a major challenge to correlate the PL properties with the atomic-level structure due to the complex interplay of the metal core (i.e. the inner kernel) and the exterior shell (i.e. surface Au(i)-thiolate staple motifs). Decoupling these two intertwined structural factors is critical in order to understand the PL origin. Herein, we utilize two Au28(SR)20 nanoclusters with different –R groups, which possess the same core but different shell structures and thus provide an ideal system for the PL study. We discover that the Au28(CHT)20 (CHT: cyclohexanethiolate) nanocluster exhibits a more than 15-fold higher PL quantum yield than the Au28(TBBT)20 nanocluster (TBBT: p-tert-butylbenzenethiolate). Such an enhancement is found to originate from the different structural arrangement of the staple motifs in the shell, which modifies the electron relaxation dynamics in the inner core to different extents for the two nanoclusters. The emergence of a long PL lifetime component in the more emissive Au28(CHT)20 nanocluster reveals that its PL is enhanced by suppressing the nonradiative pathway. The presence of long, interlocked staple motifs is further identified as a key structural parameter that favors the luminescence. Overall, this work offers structural insights into the PL origin in Au28(SR)20 nanoclusters and provides some guidelines for designing luminescent metal nanoclusters for sensing and optoelectronic applications. Two Au28(SR)20 nanoclusters with an identical core but different shells exhibit a ∼15-fold difference in photoluminescence.![]()

Abstract
Ligand-induced surface restructuring with heteroatomic doping is used to precisely modify the surface of a prototypical [Au25 (SR1 )18 ]- cluster (1) while maintaining its icosahedral Au13 core for the synthesis of a new bimetallic [Au19 Cd3 (SR2 )18 ]- cluster (2). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that six bidentate Au2 (SR1 )3 motifs (L2) attached to the Au13 core of 1 were replaced by three quadridentate Au2 Cd(SR2 )6 motifs (L4) to create a bimetallic cluster 2. Experimental and theoretical results demonstrate a stronger electronic interaction between the surface motifs (Au2 Cd(SR2 )6 ) and the Au13 core, attributed to a more compact cluster structure and a larger energy gap of 2 compared to that of 1. These factors dramatically enhance the photoluminescence quantum efficiency and lifetime of crystal of the cluster 2. This work provides a new route for the design of a wide range of bimetallic/alloy metal nanoclusters with superior optoelectronic properties and functionality.

Abstract
The atomic precision of ultrasmall noble-metal nanoclusters (NMNs) is fundamental for elucidating structure-property relationships and probing their practical applications. So far, the atomic structure of NMNs protected by organic ligands has been widely elucidated, whereas the precise atomic structure of NMNs protected by water-soluble ligands (such as peptides and nucleic acid), has been rarely reported. With the concept of "precision to precision", density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to probe the thermodynamic plausibility and inherent determinants for synthesizing atomically precise, water-soluble NMNs via the framework-maintained two-phase ligand-exchange method. A series of rod-like Au25-n Mn (M=Au, Ag, Cu, Pd, Pt) NMNs with the same framework but varied ligands and metal compositions was chosen as the modeling reactants, and cysteine was used as the modeling water-soluble ligand. It was found that the acidity of the reaction remarkably affects the thermodynamic facility of the ligand exchange reactions. Ligand effects (structural distortion and acidity) dominate the overall thermodynamic facility of the ligand-exchange reaction, while the number and type of doped metal atom(s) has little influence.

Abstract
Recent advances in the synthetic chemistry of atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) have significantly broadened the accessible sizes and structures. Such particles are well defined and have intriguing properties, thus, they are attractive for catalysis. Especially, those NCs with identical size but different core (or surface) structure provide unique opportunities that allow the specific role of the core and the surface to be mapped out without complication by the size effect. Herein, we summarize recent work with isomeric Aun NCs protected by ligands and isostructural NCs but with different surface ligands. The highlighted work includes catalysis by spherical and rod-shaped Au25 (with different ligands), quasi-isomeric Au28 (SR)20 with different R groups, structural isomers of Au38 (SR)24 (with identical R) and Au38 S2 (SR)20 with body-centred cubic (bcc) structure, and isostructural [Au38 L20 (PPh3 )4 ]2+ (different L). These isomeric and/or isostructural NCs have provided valuable insights into the respective roles of the kernel, surface staples, and the type of ligands on catalysis. Future studies will lead to fundamental advances and development of tailor-made catalysts.

Abstract
Herein we report the synthesis and structure determination of a non-fluorescent Au4 Ag5 (dppm)2 (SAdm)6 (BPh4 ) (dppm=bis(diphenylphosphino)methane and HSAdm=1-adamantane mercaptan) nanocluster in methanol with extremely strong AIE when aggregating to the solid state (i.e., film or crystal). This phenomenon was rarely reported in structural determined noble metal nanoclusters. The extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurement ruled out the hypothesis that the luminescence originated from the structure change in different states. Besides, the crystal structure (determined by X-ray diffraction) revealed that the tightly combined left- and right-handed enantiomers induced the strong restriction of intramolecular motions (RIM), which may have an impact on aggregation-induced emission.

Abstract
Revealing the stability and structural patterns is important for precisely synthesizing or assembling ligand protected nanoclusters, and even their applications as functional nanomaterials. Investigations on structural evolutional patterns and structural stability are very challenging, because structures change with the nanocluster size and the structural stability depends on both the electron structures of cores and ligand type. Herein, we propose a hybrid superatom network (hSAN) model to understand the stability of some gold nanoclusters with different kinds of ligands. In this model, 4c-2e superatom Au4 can form conjugated superatom networks by vertex sharing, and ligands further connect the conjugated superatom networks together to form a bigger complex network, i.e. a hSAN. The stability of the clusters, including [Au24(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CPh)14(PPh3)4]2+, Au28(S-c-C6H11)20, Au36(SCH2Ph-tBu)8Cl20, Au40(O-MBT)24 and Au52(TBBT)32 can be explained uniformly by the hSAN model. Beyond that, a new heuristic structural pattern named the Au13 topological rule is proposed. In the light of this heuristic rule, every Au7 bi-tetrahedral kernel is included in an Au13 structure with quasi-Oh symmetry, i.e. as long as the Au7 bi-tetrahedral kernel is formed, it will be surrounded by six Au atoms to form an Au13 structure topologically. According to this understanding, a new nanocluster [Au44(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CH3)26(PCH3)4]2+ and a new nanowire with the structural evolutional formula [Au(20n+4)(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CH3)(12n+2)(PCH3)4]2+ (n = 1, 2, 3, 4, …) are predicted. Both the understanding of the stability and the structure rule are free from the type of ligand, and will be useful for the structural predictions and determinations of ligand protected gold nanoclusters.

Abstract
The assembly sequence of the coordination cluster [Zn5 (H2 L(n) )6 ](NO3 )4 ]⋅8 H2 O⋅2 CH3 OH (Zn5 , H3 L(n) =(1,2-bis(benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)-ethenol) involves in situ dehydration of 1,2-bis(benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)-1,2-ethanediol (H4 L) through the formation of the [Zn(H3 L)2 ](+) monomer, dimerization to [Zn2 (H3 L)2 ](+) , dehydration of the ligand to [Zn2 (H2 L(n) )2 ](+) , and the final formation of the pentanuclear cluster. The cluster has the following special characteristics: 1) high stability in both refluxing 37 % HCl and 27 % NH3 , 2) low cytotoxicity, and 3) pH-sensitive fluorescence in the visible-to-near-infrared (Vis/NIR) region in the solid state and in solution. We have applied it as a fluorescent probe both in vivo and in vitro. Its H-bonding ability is the key to its affinity and selectivity for imaging lysosomes in HeLa cells and tumors in male BALB/C mice. It provides a new type of sensitive and biocompatible fluorescent probe for detecting small tumors (13.5 mm(3) ).

Liu L, Li P, Yuan LF, Cheng L, Yang J. From isosuperatoms to isosupermolecules: new concepts in cluster science. NANOSCALE 2016; 8:12787-12792. Abstract
As an extension of the superatom concept, a new concept "isosuperatom" is proposed, reflecting the physical phenomenon that a superatom cluster can take multiple geometrical structures with their electronic structures topologically invariant. The icosahedral and cuboctahedral Au13(5+) units in the Au25(SCH2CH2Ph)18(-), Au23(SC6H11)16(-) and Au24(SAdm)16 nanoclusters are found to be examples of this concept. Furthermore, two isosuperatoms can combine to form a supermolecule. For example, the structure of the {Ag32(DPPE)5(SC6H4CF3)24}(2-) nanocluster can be understood well in terms of a Ag22(12+) supermolecule formed by two Ag13(8+) isosuperatoms. On the next level of complexity, various combinations of isosuperatoms can lead to supermolecules with different geometrical structures but similar electronic structures, i.e., "isosupermolecules". We take two synthesized nanoclusters Au20(PPhpy2)10Cl4(2+) and Au30S(StBu)18 to illustrate two Au20(6+) isosupermolecules. The proposed concepts of isosuperatom and isosupermolecule significantly enrich the superatom concept, give a new framework for understanding a wide range of nanoclusters, and open a new door for designing assembled materials.
