Abstract
Materials with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) exhibit great application potential in biological scenes such as cell imaging, optical probes, etc. However, most developed materials are non-aqueous and toxic, which seriously restricts their compatibility with the life systems. Thus, it is necessary to explore a water-based CPL system with high biocompatibility so that to promote the biologic application process. Herein, a facile and efficient route to achieve the CPL properties of a functional aqueous solution is demonstrated by the combination of 0D quantum dots (QDs) and 2D chiral nanosheets. Benefited by the specific absorption ability of nanosheets for left/right-handed CPL, the QDs adsorbed onto the surface of nanosheets through hydrogen bond interactions showed apparent CPL features. In addition, this system has a good extensibility as the CPL property can be effectively regulated by changing the kind of emissive QDs. More importantly, this water-based nano-composite with facile fabrication process (one-step mixing) is suitable for the real applications, which is undoubtedly beneficial for the further progress of functional CPL materials.

Abstract
Fabricating chiral inorganic materials and revealing their unique quantum confinement-determined optical chiral responses are crucial tasks in the multidisciplinary fields of chemistry, physics, and biology. The field of chiral mesostructured inorganic materials started from the synthesis of individual nanocrystals and evolved to include their assembly from metals, semiconductors, ceramics, and inorganic salts endowed with various chiral structures ranging from atomic to micron scales. This tutorial review highlights the recent research on chiral mesostructured inorganic materials, especially the novel expression of mesostructured chirality and endowed optical chiral response, and it may inspire us with new strategies for the design of chiral inorganic materials and new opportunities beyond the traditional applications of chirality. Fabrication methods for chiral mesostructured inorganic materials are classified according to chirality type, scale, and symmetry-breaking mechanism. Special attention is given to highlight systems with original discoveries, exceptional phenomena, or unique mechanisms of optical chiral response for left- and right-handedness.

Abstract
Currently, the smart photonic materials that can switch circularly polarized signals in real-time have attracted extensive attention due to numerous potential applications in information storage and photonics displays. However, the dynamically reversible switching of circularly polarized signals requires precise structural reconfiguration, which is rarely achieved in traditional biomaterials. Herein, a dual photonic bandgap (PBG) structure is constructed based on the optical propagation principle of cellulose-based photonic crystals, enabling the flexible switching of the intensity, wavelength, and direction of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). By adjusting the fluorescence intensity and the matching degree of chiral structure, the asymmetric factor value of dual PBG structure is up to -1.47, far exceeding other cellulose-based materials. Importantly, it is demonstrated that dual CPL emission can be efficiently induced by two different PBGs, opening a new approach for on-demand switching of single and dual CPL emission. In addition, the dual PBG structure exhibits dual circularly polarized reflected signals under the circular polarizer, which perfectly embodies the applicability of multiple encryptions in QR codes. This work provides new insights into the real-time manipulation of circularly polarized signals by chiral photonic materials.

Abstract
Circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) films with high dissymmetry factors hold great potential for optoelectronic applications. Herein, we propose a strategy for achieving strongly dissymetric CPL in nanocomposite films based on chirality induction and energy transfer to semiconductor nanocrystals. First, focusing on a purely organic system, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and CPL activity of organic liquid crystals (LCs) forming helical nanofilaments was detected, featuring green emission with high dissymmetry factors glum ∼ 10-2. The handedness of helical filaments, and thus the sign of CPL, was controlled via minute amounts of a small chiral organic dopant. Second, nanocomposite films were fabricated by incorporating InP/ZnS semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) into the LC matrix, which induced the chiral assembly of QDs and endowed them with chiroptical properties. Due to the spectral matching of the components, energy transfer (ET) from LC to QDs was possible enabling a convenient way of tuning CPL wavelengths by varying the LC/QD ratio. As obtained, composite films exhibited absolute glum values up to ∼10-2 and thermally on/off switchable luminescence. Overall, we demonstrate the induction of chiroptical properties by the assembly of nonchiral building QDs on the chiral organic template and energy transfer from organic films to QDs, representing a simple and versatile approach to tune the CPL activity of organic materials.

Abstract
Chiral semiconductor nanostructures have received enormous attention due to their emerging circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties. However, compared with well-studied photoluminescence (PL), the reported CPL is much weaker and more challenging to be modulated. Herein, we describe a new approach for acquiring the intense and tunable CPL from inorganic chiral photonic crystals (CPCs) doped with semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). Unprecedentedly, the sign, position and intensity of CPL peaks can be precisely controlled by manipulating either the photonic band gap of CPCs or luminescence wavelength of QDs and a giant absolute dissymmetry factor |glum | up to 0.25 is obtained. More importantly, the origin of the CPL modulation is clearly elucidated by both experiment and theory. This work lays the foundation for the construction of next-generation high-performance CPL-based devices.

Abstract
In this study, we report the first circularly polarized white organic light-emitting diodes (CP-WOLEDs) based on all thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials. Two pairs of spiro-type TADF enantiomers, (R/S)-SPOCN (5,5'-((2,2',3,3'-tetrahydro-1,1'-spirobi[indene]-7,7'-diyl)bis(oxy))bis(4-(10H-phenoxazin-10-yl)phthalonitrile)) and (R/S)-OSFSO (2'-(trifluoromethyl)-spiro[quinolino[3,2,1-kl]phenoxazine-9,9'-thioxanthene]-10',10'-dioxide), serve as emitters with complementary emission. The CP-OLEDs exhibit warm white emission with a CIE coordinate of (0.35, 0.46). Besides, decent device performances are observed with an external quantum efficiency of up to 21.6 % at maximum and 11.8 % at 1000 cd m-2 . Obvious circularly polarized electroluminescence signals are detected with a dissymmetry factor |gEL | of around 3.0×10-3 . This is the first report of CP-WOLEDs that can harvest both singlet and triplet excitons, which provides a feasible strategy for the development of CP-WOLEDs with remarkable device performances.

Abstract
Carbon nanodots are currently one of the hot topics in the nanomaterials world, due to their accessible synthesis and promising features. However, the purification of these materials is still a critical aspect, especially for syntheses involving molecular precursors. Indeed, the presence of unreacted species or small organic molecules formed during solvothermal treatments can affect the properties of the synthesized nanomaterials. To illustrate the extreme importance of this issue, we present two case studies in which insufficient purification results in misleading conclusions regarding the chiral and fluorescent properties of the investigated materials. Key to identify molecular species is the use of nuclear magnetic resonance, which proves to be an effective tool. Our work highlights the need to include nuclear magnetic resonance as a standard characterization technique for carbon-based nanomaterials, to minimize the risk of observing properties that arise from molecular species, rather than the target carbon nanodots.

Abstract
Light-emitting nanoparticles like semiconductor nanocrystals (termed quantum dots, QDs) are promising candidates for biosensing and bioimaging applications based on their bright and stable photoluminescent properties. As high-quality QDs are often synthesized in organic solvents, strategies needed to be developed to render them water-dispersible without affecting their optical properties and prevent changes in postmodification steps like the biofunctionalization with antibodies or DNA. Despite a large number of studies on suitable surface modification procedures, the preparation of water-soluble QDs for nanobiotechnology applications still presents a challenge. To highlight the advantages of surface silanization, we systematically explored the influence of the core/multishell architecture of CdSe/CdS/ZnS QDs and the silanization conditions on the optical properties of the resulting silanized QDs. Our results show that the optical properties of silica-coated CdSe/CdS/ZnS QDs are best preserved in the presence of a thick CdS (6 monolayers (ML)) intermediate shell, providing a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY), and a relatively thick ZnS (4.5 ML) external shell, effectively shielding the QDs from the chemical changes during silica coating. In addition to the QD core/shell architecture, other critical parameters of the silica-coating process, that can have an influence on the optical properties of the QD, include the choice of the surfactant and its concentration used for silica coating. The highest PL QY of about 46% was obtained by a microemulsion silica-coating procedure with the surfactant Brij L4, making these water-dispersible QDs to well-suited optical reporters in future applications like fluorescence immunoassays, biomedicine, and bioimaging.

Abstract
Chirality generation and transfer is not only of critical importance in resolving the origin of biological homochirality, but also is of great significance for exploring the chirality-related functionalities in nanomaterials and supramolecular systems. Although modulating the ground state chirality in chiral nanomaterials has been widely demonstrated, it remains a big challenge to steer the excited state chirality (circularly polarized luminescence, CPL). Herein, we present a kind of chiral spherical micelles constructed by chiral cationic gemini surfactants, whose surfaces and cavities could co-assemble with hydrophilic and hydrophobic emitters concurrently. Subsequently, the hydrophilic and hydrophobic emitters could be endowed with CPL activity in the aqueous phase. Additionally, the cavities of such micelles can be regarded as the powerful chiral confined space, which could effectively modulate the excited state chirality of dynamic chemical reactions, enabling color-adjustable CPL emission.

Abstract
The occurrence and transmission of chirality is a fascinating characteristic of nature. However, the intermolecular transmission efficiency of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) remains challenging due to poor through-space energy transfer. We report a unique CPL transmission from inducing the achiral acceptor to emit CPL within a specific liquid crystal (LC)-based intermolecular system through a circularly polarized fluorescence resonance energy transfer (C-FRET), wherein the luminescent cholesteric LC is employed as the chirality donor, and rationally designed achiral long-wavelength aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorophore acts as the well-assembled acceptor. In contrast to photon-release-and-absorption, the chirality transmission channel of C-FRET is highly dependent upon the energy resonance in the highly intrinsic chiral assembly of cholesteric LC, as verified by deliberately separating the achiral acceptor from the chiral donor to keep it far beyond the resonance distance. This C-FRET mode provides a de novo strategy concept for high-level information processing for applications such as high-density data storage, combinatorial logic calculation, and multilevel data encryption and decryption.

Two light-driven chiral fluorescent molecular switches, (R,S,R)-switch 1 and (R,S,R)-switch 2, are prepared by means of hydrogen-bonded (H-bonded) assembly of a photoresponsive (S) chiral fluorescent molecule, respectively with a cyano substitution at different positions as an H-bond acceptor and an opposite (R) chiral molecule as an H-bond donor. The resulting two switches exhibit tunable and reversible Z/E photoisomerization irradiated with 450 nm blue and 365 nm UV light. When doped into an achiral liquid crystal, both switches are found to be able to form a CPL tunable luminescent helical superstructure. In contrast to the tunable CPL characteristics of the system incorporating switch 2, exposure of the system incorporating switch 1 to 365 nm and 450 nm radiation can lead to controllable different photostationary CPL behavior, including switching-off and polarization inversion. In addition, optical information coding is demonstrated using the system containing switch 1.

Abstract
We report the fabrication of an exotic bamboo-like π-nanotube via the hierarchical self-assembly of a dipeptide-substituted naphthalenediimide gelator with tunable helicity and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). It was found that in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) the gelator molecules self-assembled into a bamboo-like π-nanotube, which is composed of truncated nanocones and CPL active. When defining the diameter ratio of the lower to upper edge of each nanocone as a parameter to express the helicity of different nanotubes, it was found that both the helicity and CPL of these nanotubes can be adjusted by the amount of TFA. Moreover, the helicity of the nanotube can be conveyed to the achiral quantum dots (QDs) and produce a hybrid nanotube/QDs CPL active materials with adjustable dissymmetry factor. This work finds a new type self-assembled bamboo-like π-nanotube and unveils their helicity and CPL control.

Abstract
Herein, we show that chiral metal nanoparticle superlattices can be produced through coassembly of achiral metal nanoparticles and porphyrin-based organic molecules. This chirality transfer from molecules to nanoparticle superstructures across three orders of magnitude in length scale is enabled by the hetero chain-chain van der Waals interactions. As far as we know, these are the first chiral nanoparticle assemblies based on chirality transfer through weak van der Waals forces. The dimensionality of the nanoparticle superlattices (1D chiral chains, 2D chiral sheets (cones), and 3D chiral particles) can be controlled based on a same synthetic chiral porphyrin molecule. Metalation of these porphyrin molecules with zinc cations results in the switching of molecular packing from J-type to H-type, which thereby produces 1D chiral nanoparticle chains. Functionalization of these zinc porphyrins with oleylamine can induce the assembly of nanoparticles into 2D chiral nanoparticle sheets.

Abstract
Light-emitting chiral carbonized polymer dots (Ch-CPDs) are attracting great interest because of their extraordinary photonic properties, but modulating their band-gap emission, especially at long wavelength, and maintaining their chiral structure to achieve multicolor, high-emission Ch-CPDs remains challenging. Reported here for the first time is the synthesis of red- and multicolor-emitting Ch-CPDs using the common precursors L-/D-tryptophan and o-phenylenediamine, and a solvothermal approach at one temperature. The quantum yield of the Ch-CPDs was between 31 % and 54 %. Supramolecular self-assembly provided multicolor-emitting Ch-CPDs showing novel circularly polarized luminescence, with the highest dissymmetric factor (glum ) of 1×10-2 . Importantly, circularly polarized white-emitting CPDs were fabricated for the first time by tuning the mixing ratio of the three colored Ch-CPDs in a gel. This strategy affords exciting opportunities for designing functional chiroptical materials.

Abstract
By combining the blue and orange CPL or functionalized bis-benzoxanethones emitters (S-/R-BN-tCz and S-/R-BN-PXZ), warm white CP-OLEDs were fabricated using solution-processed single emitting layer strategy. The successful realization of white CP-EL benefited from the same stable binaphthyl chirality and similar rigid structure of the two emissive CPL emitters. The devices exhibited the low turn-on voltage of ≈4.3 V, maximum luminance of ≈10200 cd m-2 and maximum current efficiency of ≈2.0 cd A-1 . Most significantly, the devices with CIE coordinates of (0.32, 0.45) displayed intense CP-EL signals in the spectral range of 450 to 650 nm, and showed stable gEL values of ≈10-3 as the luminance increased from 100 to 6000 cd m-2 . To the best of our knowledge, this work provides for the first time a simple and feasible strategy to fabricate solution-processed white CP-OLEDs based on the co-doping of the CPL emitters.

Abstract
Ligand-induced chirality in asymmetric CdSe/CdS core-shell nanocrystals (NCs) has been extensively applied in chiral biosensors, regioselective syntheses and assemblies, circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), and chiroptic-based devices due to their excellent physiochemical properties, such as the tunable quantum confinement effects, surface functionality, and chemical stability. Herein, we present CdSe/CdS NCs with various morphologies such as nanoflowers, tadpoles, and dot/rods (DRs) with chirality induced by surface chiral ligands. The observed circular dichroism (CD) and CPL activities are closely associated with the geometrical characteristics of the nanostructures, such as the shell thickness and the aspect ratio of the CdSe/CdS NCs. Furthermore, in situ observations of the growth of tadpoles with a single tail indicate that the CD response is mainly attributed to the CdS shell, which has a maximum tail length of ∼45 nm (approximately λ/10 of the incident light wavelength). On the other hand, the CPL activity is only related to the CdSe core, and the activity benefits from a thin CdS shell with a relatively high photoluminescence quantum yield (QY). Further theoretical models demonstrated the aspect-ratio-dependent g-factor and QY variations in these asymmetric nanostructures. These findings provide insights into not only the asymmetric synthesis of CdSe/CdS NCs, but also the rational design of CdSe/CdS nanostructures with tunable CD and CPL activities.

Abstract
Controlling the self-assembly morphology of π-conjugated block copolymer is of great interesting. Herein, amphiphilic poly(3-hexylthiophene)-block-poly(phenyl isocyanide)s (P3HT-b-PPI) copolymers composed of π-conjugated P3HT and optically active helical PPI segments were readily prepared. Taking advantage of the crystallizable nature of P3HT and the chirality of the helical PPI segment, crystallization-driven asymmetric self-assembly (CDASA) of the block copolymers lead to the formation of single-handed helical nanofibers with controlled length, narrow dispersity, and well-defined helicity. During the self-assembly process, the chirality of helical PPI was transferred to the supramolecular assemblies, giving the helical assemblies large optical activity. The single-handed helical assemblies of the block copolymers exhibited interesting white-light emission and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). The handedness and dissymmetric factor of the induced CPL can be finely tuned through the variation on the helicity and length of the helical nanofibers.

Abstract
Bottom-up multicomponent molecular self-assembly is an efficient approach to fabricate and manipulate chiral nanostructures and their chiroptical activities such as the Cotton effect and circular polarized luminescence (CPL). However, the integrated coassembly suffers from spontaneous and inherent systematic pathway complexity with low yield and poor fidelity. Consequently, a rational design of chiral self-assembled systems with more than two components remains a significant challenge. Herein, a modularized, ternary molecular self-assembly strategy that generates chiroptically active materials at diverse hierarchical levels is reported. N-terminated aromatic amino acids appended with binding sites for charge transfer and multiple hydrogen bonds undergo the evolution of supramolecular chirality with unique handedness and luminescent color, generating abundant CPL emission with high luminescence dissymmetry factor values in precisely controlled modalities. Ternary coassembly facilitates high-water-content hydrogel formation constituted by super-helical nanostructures, demonstrating a helix to toroid topological transition. This discovery would shed light on developing complicated multicomponent systems in mimicking biological coassembly events.

Abstract
Chiral assembly and asymmetric synthesis are critically important for the generation of chiral metal clusters with chiroptical activities. Here, a racemic mixture of [K(CH3 OH)2 (18-crown-6)]+ [Cu5 (St Bu)6 ]- (1⋅CH3 OH) in the chiral space group was prepared, in which the chiral red-emissive anionic [Cu5 (St Bu)6 ]- cluster was arranged along a twofold screw axis. Interestingly, the release of the coordinated CH3 OH of the cationic units turned the chiral 1⋅CH3 OH crystal into a mesomeric crystal [K(18-crown-6)]+ [Cu5 (St Bu)6 ]- (1), which has a centrosymmetric space group, by adding symmetry elements of glide and mirror planes through both disordered [Cu5 (St Bu)6 ]- units. The switchable chiral/achiral rearrangement of [Cu5 (St Bu)6 ]- clusters along with the capture/release of CH3 OH were concomitant with an intense increase/decrease in luminescence. We also used cationic chiral amino alcohols to induce the chiral assembly of a pair of enantiomers, [d/l-valinol(18-crown-6)]+ [Cu5 (St Bu)6 ]- (d/l-Cu5V ), which display impressive circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in contrast to the CPL-silent racemic mixture of 1⋅CH3 OH and mesomeric 1.

Abstract
Ligand-induced chirality in core/shell nanocrystals (NCs) has attracted extensive attention because of many valuable potential applications. However, the cause of chirality especially in semiconductor nanomaterials is still under debate despite the creation of chiral type I core/shell structures. Herein, we synthesized a kind of new Cu2S/CdSe core/shell nanostructure to study the underlying reason. Four samples of Cu2S/CdSe were synthesized utilizing successive ion layer adsorption and reaction to vary the thickness of the CdSe shell upon a Cu2S core with 5 nm diameter. The chirality of type II Cu2S/CdSe NCs is imparted by l-/d-cysteine and penicillamine, which could be modulated with an increasing thickness of the CdSe shell. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of chiral type II core/shell semiconductor NCs. The hybridization theory can explain the variation trend of g factors with every increase in shell thickness from four monolayers (4 ML) to 7 ML. The results indicate that the chiroptical activity of semiconductor NCs is mainly due to hybridization between the holes in the valence band of NCs and the highest occupied molecular orbitals of the chiral ligands. In addition, Cu2S/CdSe NCs show a better chiroptical intensity in comparison with the type I structure according to previous work. The first design of chiral type II Cu2S/CdSe core/shell NCs and a detailed investigation of chiral variation trend help to give a better understanding of the chiral interaction between ligands and core/shell semiconductor nanostructures.
