A Titanium Metal–Organic Framework with Visible‐Light‐Responsive Photocatalytic Activity

Facilitating Charge Transfer via Ti-Knot Pathway in Electrochromic Three-Dimensional Metalated Covalent Organic Frameworks

Due to the ordered one-dimensional channel as well as accessible redox sites, two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) have garnered extensive attention in the field of electrochromism. However, organic 2D frameworks impose limitations on charge transfer and the weak interlayer interactions in 2D COFs, adversely affecting the stability during switching processes. Herein, we introduced Ti knots to construct three-dimensional metalated covalent organic frameworks (3D MCOFs), denoted as Ti-DHTA-Py. The Ti knots not only serve as templates for organizing organic units into unique 3D topological structures in a controlled manner but also establish charge transfer pathways conducive to electron delocalization and transmission within the framework. As a result, the 3D Ti-DHTA-Py MCOFs electrode exhibited a reduced band gap and remarkable electrochromic (EC) performances: electrochemical cyclic stability of 93.6% retention after 500 cycles, switching times (2.5 s/0.5 s), and a high coloration efficiency (423 cm2 C-1). This research underscores the potential of 3D MCOFs as promising candidates for advancing EC technologies, surmounting the limitations associated with traditional 2D COFs.

Promoting Photocatalytic Activity of NH2-MIL-125(Ti) for H2 Evolution Reaction through Creation of TiIII- and CoI-Based Proton Reduction Sites

Titanium-based metal-organic framework, NH2-MIL-125(Ti), has been widely investigated for photocatalytic applications but has low activity in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this work, we show a one-step low-cost postmodification of NH2-MIL-125(Ti) via impregnation of Co(NO3)2. The resulting Co@NH2-MIL-125(Ti) with embedded single-site CoII species, confirmed by XPS and XAS measurements, shows enhanced activity under visible light exposure. The increased H2 production is likely triggered by the presence of active CoI transient sites detected upon collection of pump-flow-probe XANES spectra. Furthermore, both photocatalysts demonstrated a drastic increase in HER performance after consecutive reuse while maintaining their structural integrity and consistent H2 production. Via thorough characterization, we revealed two mechanisms for the formation of highly active proton reduction sites: nondestructive linker elimination resulting in coordinatively unsaturated Ti sites and restructuring of single CoII sites. Overall, this straightforward manner of confinement of CoII cocatalysts within NH2-MIL-125(Ti) offers a highly stable visible-light-responsive photocatalyst.

Charge Transfer Process of a Solvated Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Network

We show the first example of an organic linker (OL) terminated by carboxylic groups that can form a hydrogen-bonded network/polymer (HBN) in solution under controlled conditions in which the photogenerated charges can hop from a monomer OL to the hydrogen-bonded backbone of OLs, as probed by transient absorption (fs-TA). While fs-TA reveals a slow twisting process in the monomer form of the OL, the formation of a hydrogen-bonded network in solution suppresses such process and favors instead a charge transfer (CT) state along the low-lying hydrogen-bonded backbone. Theoretical calculations show that such solvated HBN in a specific polar solvent is stabilized due to the huge change of the dipole moment from monomer compared to the network, leading to a charge delocalization character due to the symmetry breaking. Our findings will open new avenues for implementing solvated hydrogen-bonded molecules in applications such as sensing and photocatalysis.

Models of Polaron Transport in Inorganic and Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Titanium Oxides

Polarons are a type of localized excess charge in materials and often form in transition metal oxides. The large effective mass and confined nature of polarons make them of fundamental interest for photochemical and electrochemical reactions. The most studied polaronic system is rutile TiO₂ where electron addition results in small polaron formation through the reduction of Ti(IV) d⁰ to Ti(III) d¹ centers. Using this model system, we perform a systematic analysis of the potential energy surface based on semiclassical Marcus theory parametrized from the first-principles potential energy landscape. We show that F-doped TiO₂ only binds polaron weakly with effective dielectric screening after the second nearest neighbor. To tailor the polaron transport, we compare TiO₂ to two metal-organic frameworks (MOFs): MIL-125 and ACM-1. The choice of MOF ligands and connectivity of the TiO₆ octahedra largely vary the shape of the diabatic potential energy surface and the polaron mobility. Our models are applicable to other polaronic materials.

Copper-Bridged Tetrakis(4-ethynylphenyl)ethene Aggregates with Photo-Regulated 1 O2 and O2 .- Generation for Selective Photocatalytic Aerobic Oxidation

Active species regulation is a key scientific issue that essentially determines the selectivity and activity of a photocatalyst. Herein, Cu^I -bridged tetrakis(4-ethynylphenyl)ethene aggregates (T₄ EPE-Cu) with photo-regulated ¹ O₂ and O₂ ^.- generation were demonstrated for selective photocatalytic aerobic oxidation. In this system, transient photovoltage combined with the density functional theory calculations confirmed that Cu-alkynyl was the main oxygen activation site. The adsorbed O₂ tends to produce O₂ ^.- because of the potential well effect of Cu-alkynyl under high-energy light excitation. But under low-energy light, O₂ tends to produce ¹ O₂ via resonance energy transfer with Cu-alkynyl. For α-terpinene oxidation, the ratios of ¹ O₂ products to O₂ ^.- products can be controlled from 1.3 (380 nm) to 10.7 (600 nm). Furthermore, T₄ EPE-Cu exhibited ultrahigh photocatalytic performance for Glaser coupling and benzylamine oxidation, with a conversion and selectivity of over 99 %.

Photocatalytic Biocidal Coatings Featuring Zr6Ti4-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

The world is currently suffering socially, economically, and politically from the recent pandemic outbreak due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and those in hospitals, schools, and elderly nursing homes face enhanced threats. Healthcare textiles, such as masks and medical staff gowns, are susceptible to contamination of various pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria and viruses. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can potentially address these challenges due to their tunable reactivity and ability to be incorporated as porous coatings on textile materials. Here, we report how incorporating titanium into the zirconium-pyrene-based MOF NU-1000, denoted as NU-1012, generates a highly reactive biocidal photocatalyst. This MOF features a rare ligand migration phenomenon, and both the Ti/Zr center and the pyrene linker act synergistically as dual active centers and widen the absorption band for this material, which results in enhanced reactive oxygen species generation upon visible light irradiation. Additionally, we found that the ligand migration process is generally applicable to other csq topology Zr-MOFs. Importantly, NU-1012 can be easily incorporated onto cotton textile cloths as a coating, and the resulting composite material demonstrates fast and potent biocidal activity against Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli), Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus epidermidis), and T7 bacteriophage virus with up to a 7-log(99.99999%) reduction within 1 h under simulated daylight.

Environmentally Benign Biosynthesis of Hierarchical MOF/Bacterial Cellulose Composite Sponge for Nerve Agent Protection

The fabrication of MOF polymer composite materials enables the practical applications of MOF-based technology, in particular for protective suits and masks. However, traditional production methods typically require organic solvent for processing which leads to environmental pollution, low-loading efficiency, poor accessibility, and loss of functionality due to poor solvent resistance properties. For the first time, we have developed a microbial synthesis strategy to prepare a MOF/bacterial cellulose nanofiber composite sponge. The prepared sponge exhibited a hierarchically porous structure, high MOF loading (up to ≈90 %), good solvent resistance, and high catalytic activity for the liquid- and solid-state hydrolysis of nerve agent simulants. Moreover, the MOF/ bacterial cellulose composite sponge reported here showed a nearly 8-fold enhancement in the protection against an ultra-toxic nerve agent (GD) in permeability studies as compared to a commercialized adsorptive carbon cloth. The results shown here present an essential step toward the practical application of MOF-based protective gear against nerve agents.

Photocatalytic removal of diazinon from aqueous solutions: a quantitative systematic review

Diazinon is a widely used pesticide that can be effectively degraded in aqueous solutions via photocatalytic oxidation. This quantitative systematic review was conducted to shed light on the various aspects of photocatalytic diazinon removal based on evidence. A systematic search was performed in Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Ovid databases with keywords including diazinon, photocatalysis, and their equivalents. The search was limited to original articles in English published between January 1, 2010, and March 25, 2021. The results were expressed by descriptive statistics including mean, SD, median, and percentiles, among others. The initial electronic and manual search retrieved 777 articles, among which 41 studies comprising 49 trials were qualified for data synthesis. The reported diazinon degradation rate ranged from 2 to 100%, with a mean ± SD of 59.17 ± 28.03%. Besides, ZnO/UV, WO₃/UV, TiO₂/UV, and TiO₂/Vis, in sequence, were the most widely used processes with the highest efficacies. Solution pH in the range of 5-8, catalyst dose below 600 mg/L, diazinon initial concentration below 40 mg/L, and contact time of 20-140 min could be the optimum conditions. Diazinon degradation obeyed the first-order kinetic model with k_obs between 0.0042 and 1.86 min^-1 and consumed energy of 38.93-350.36 kWh/m³. Diazoxon and IMP were the most detected by-products of diazinon degradation although bioassay data were scarce. Based on the results, photocatalytic processes are very efficient in removing diazinon from aqueous solutions although more elaborate studies are needed to assess the mineralization rate and effluent toxicity.

Hybrid metal organic frameworks as an Exotic material for the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants present in wastewater: A review

In this world, water is considered as the Elixir for all living creatures. Human life rolls with water, and every activity depends upon water. Worldwide water resources are being contaminated due to the elevation in the population count, industrialization and urbanization. Ejection of chemicals by industries and domestic sewages remains the major reason in the destruction of natural water resources. Contaminated water with harmful microbes, chemical dyes, pesticides, and carcinogens are the root cause of many diseases and deaths of living species. In this scenario, researchers engaged in producing ultra components to remove the contaminants. Metal organic frameworks (MOF) are the desired combination of organic and inorganic materials to achieve the required target. MOFs possess unique characteristics like tunable internal structure, porosity, crystallinity and high surface area which enable them for energy and environmental application. For the past years, MOFs are concentrated more as a photocatalyst in the treatment of polluted water. These research studies discuss the improvement of photocatalytic performance of MOF by the incorporation of metals, metal coupled with nanoparticles like polymers, graphene, etc., into it to achieve the enhanced photocatalytic activity by scavenging entire chemicals and harmful microbes to retain the quality of water. The target of this review article is to focus on the state of the art research work on MOFs in photocatalytic water treatment technique.

Toward Optimal Photocatalytic Hydrogen Generation from Water Using Pyrene-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials for the photocatalytic H2 evolution reaction (HER) from water. To find the optimal MOF for a photocatalytic HER, one has to consider many different factors. For example, studies have emphasized the importance of light absorption capability, optical band gap, and band alignment. However, most of these studies have been carried out on very different materials. In this work, we present a combined experimental and computation study of the photocatalytic HER performance of a set of isostructural pyrene-based MOFs (M-TBAPy, where M = Sc, Al, Ti, and In). We systematically studied the effects of changing the metal in the node on the different factors that contribute to the HER rate (e.g., optical properties, the band structure, and water adsorption). In addition, for Sc-TBAPy, we also studied the effect of changes in the crystal morphology on the photocatalytic HER rate. We used this understanding to improve the photocatalytic HER efficiency of Sc-TBAPy, to exceed the one reported for Ti-TBAPy, in the presence of a co-catalyst.

Enhancing Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production via the Construction of Robust Multivariate Ti-MOF/COF Composite

Titanium metal-organic frameworks (Ti-MOFs), as an appealing type of artificial photocatalysts, have shown great potentials in the field of solar energy conversion due to their well-studied photo-redox activity similar to TiO 2 and good optical responsiveness of linkers serving as the antenna to absorb visible-light. Although enormous efforts have been dedicated to developing Ti-MOFs with high photocatalytic activity, their solar energy conversion performances are still poor. Herein, a covalent-integrated strategy has been implemented to construct a series of multivariate Ti-MOF/COF hybrid materials, PdTCPP⸦PCN-415(NH 2 )/TpPa (composites 1, 2, and 3), featuring excellent visible-light utilization, suitable band gap, and high surface area for photocatalytic H 2 production. Notably, the resulting composites demonstrated remarkably enhanced visible-light-driven photocatalytic H 2 evolution performance, especially for the composite 2 with the maximum H 2 evolution rate of 13.98 mmol g -1 h -1 (turn-over frequency (TOF) = 227 h -1 ), which is much higher than the prototypical counterparts, PdTCPP⸦PCN-415(NH 2 ) (0.21 mmol g -1 h -1 ) and TpPa (6.51 mmol g -1 h -1 ). Our work thereby suggests a new approach to develop highly efficient photocatalysts for photocatalytic H 2 evolution reaction and beyond.

Metal-Organic Frameworks: Molecules or Semiconductors in Photocatalysis?

In the realm of solids, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer unique possibilities for the rational engineering of tailored physical properties. These derive from the modular, molecular make-up of MOFs, which allows for the selection and modification of the organic and inorganic building units that construct them. The adaptable properties make MOFs interesting materials for photocatalysis, an area of increasing significance. But the molecular and porous nature of MOFs leaves the field, in some areas, juxtapositioned between semiconductor physics and homogeneous photocatalysis. While descriptors from both fields are applied in tandem, the gap between theory and experiment has widened in some areas, and arguably needs fixing. Here we review where MOFs have been shown to be similar to conventional semiconductors in photocatalysis, and where they have been shown to be more like infinite molecules in solution. We do this from the perspective of band theory, which in the context of photocatalysis, covers both the molecular and nonmolecular principles of relevance.

Current status and future prospects of metal–organic frameworks at the interface of dye-sensitized solar cells

In this Frontier Article recent progresses and challenges at the interface of metal–organic frameworks and dye-sensitized solar cells are highlighted and discussed.
