Abstract
Crystallographically, noncentrosymmetricity (NCS) is an essential precondition and foundation of achieving nonlinear optical (NLO), pyroelectric, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric materials. Herein, structurally, octahedral [SmCl6]3- is substituted by the acentric tetrahedral polyanion [CdBr4]2-, which is employed as a templating agent to induce centrosymmetric (CS)-to-NCS transformation based on the new CS supramolecule [Cd5P2][SmCl6]Cl (1), thereby providing the NCS supramolecule [Cd4P2][CdBr4] (2). Meanwhile, this replacement further results in the host 2D ∞2[Cd5P2]4+ layers converting to yield the twisted 3D ∞3[Cd4P2]2+ framework, which promotes the growth of bulk crystals. Additionally, phase 2 possesses well-balanced NLO properties, enabling considerable second-harmonic generation (SHG) responses (0.8-2.7 × AgGaS2) in broadband spectra, the thermal expansion anisotropy (2.30) together with suitable band gap (2.37 eV) primarily leading to the favorable laser-induced damage threshold (3.33 × AgGaS2), broad transparent window, and sufficient calculated birefringence (0.0433) for phase-matching ability. Furthermore, the first polyanion substitution of the supramolecule plays the role of templating agent to realize the CS-to-NCS transformation, which offers an effective method to rationally design promising NCS-based functional materials.

Abstract
Infrared nonlinear optical (IR NLO) materials are of great significance in the development of IR laser technology. But rationally designing high-performance IR NLO materials remains a huge challenge due to the conflict between the necessary properties required for NLO materials. Notably, oxychalcogenides with mixed-anion groups have drawn extensive interest as a family of important IR NLO candidates because they integrate the property advantages of oxides and chalcogenides by chemical substitution engineering. In this review, we provide a survey of reported oxychalcogenides and aim to present the development of NLO oxychalcogenides from the perspective of rational design of their structural chemistry. Furthermore, we focus on the relationships between partial substitution and structural symmetry as well as optical properties. These provide some helpful guidance for the further exploration and design of novel oxychalcogenide materials with excellent NLO performance in the future.

Abstract
We herein report two asymmetric germanate crystals, KNbGe3 O9 and K3 Nb3 Ge2 O13 , with different structures and optical properties derived from divergent polymerized forms of GeO4 and NbO6 groups. Remarkably, K3 Nb3 Ge2 O13 achieved a rare combination of the strongest second harmonic generation (SHG) response of 17.5×KDP @ 1064 nm and the largest birefringence of 0.196 @ 546 nm in germanates. It features unique [Nb3 O12 ]∞ tubular chains constructed by circular Nb3 O15 tripolymers. Theoretical calculations reveal that the d-p interactions in the Nb3 O15 group are responsible for outstanding optical properties. This work emphasizes the significance of the polymerizable functional units in obtaining high-performance nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals.

Abstract
Introducing electronegative species into organic constituents was considered to be one effective strategy for adjusting crystal symmetry and designing new nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. By substitution of C4 in piperidine (C5H11N) with electronegative oxygen, organic morpholine (C4H9NO) was easily obtained. Therefore, to design NLO crystals, we focused on combinations of stereochemically active lone-pair (SCALP) cation (Pb2+)-based chloride and bromide with morpholine molecules. In this work, two lead halide hybrid perovskite (C4H10NO)PbX3 (X = Cl, Br, abbreviated as MPbCl3 and MPbBr3, respectively) single crystals with moderate nonlinear optical properties were synthesized by a slow evaporation method. The two title crystals belong to orthorhombic space group P212121 with one-dimensional (1D) chainlike perovskite structures. Theoretical calculations revealed that the second harmonic generation (SHG) responses mainly originate from distorted {PbX6} octahedrons of the inorganic framework. Remarkably, moderate phase-matching SHG effects of about 0.70 and 0.81 times KH2PO4, large birefringences of 0.098 and 0.111 at 1064 nm, and large laser damage thresholds (LDTs) of 19.94 and 46.82 MW/cm2 were estimated for MPbCl3 and MPbBr3, respectively. This work provides a novel strategy for new purpose-designed hybrid NLO crystals by adjustment and modulation of chemical modification.

Abstract
Metal chalcogenophosphates are receiving increasing interest, specifically as promising infrared nonlinear optical (NLO) candidates. Here, a rare-earth chalcogenophosphate Eu2 P2 S6 crystallizing in the monoclinic noncentrosymmetric space group Pn was synthesized using a high-temperature solid-state method. Its structure features isolated [P2 S6 ]4- dimer, and two types of EuS8 bicapped triangular prisms. Eu2 P2 S6 exhibits a phase-matchable second-harmonic generation (SHG) response ≈0.9×AgGaS2 @2.1 μm, and high laser-induced damage threshold of 3.4×AgGaS2 , representing the first rare-earth NLO chalcogenophosphate. The theoretical calculation result suggests that the SHG response is ascribed to the synergetic contribution of [P2 S6 ]4- dimers and EuS8 bicapped triangular prisms. This work provides not only a promising high-performance infrared NLO material, but also opens the avenue for exploring rare-earth chalcogenophosphates as potential IR NLO materials.

Abstract
Mid-infrared (mid-IR) nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals are key materials in the field of laser technology. Nevertheless, the applications of these significant optical materials are always limited by their low laser damage threshold (LDT). Here, an oxide mid-IR NLO crystal, Bi3TeBO9, with a large LDT was discovered. The centimeter-sized Bi3TeBO9 single crystal was successfully grown by the top-seeded solution growth (TSSG) method. The Bi3TeBO9 features a high LDT of 450 MW/cm2 (∼15 × AgGaS2) and the widest transparent range (0.35-7.10 μm) among known borate crystals. The second-harmonic generation (SHG) effect is about 1.6 times that of KDP. First-principles calculations and structural analysis show that the optical characteristics of Bi3TeBO9 are mainly affected by distorted [BiO6] groups. Furthermore, its thermal characteristics including specific heat, thermal diffusivity, thermal conductivity, and thermal expansion were also measured.

Abstract
Molybdate oxide materials have attracted considerable academic interest owing to their multifunctional optoelectronic properties and applications. However, to date, studies on the intrinsic properties of multiple molybdates have rarely been implemented. Herein, a prospective triple molybdate crystal, Rb3LiZn2(MoO4)4, with high crystalline quality was successfully grown using top-seeded solution growth (TSSG) approaches. Intriguingly, it affords a cage-like structure with the I4̅3d space group, analogous to that of Ca12Al14O33 (C12A7). The Rb3LiZn2(MoO4)4 crystal exhibits excellent thermal stability up to 603 °C, accompanied by a congruent melting nature. Simultaneously, it preserves the optical merits of a large band gap of 4.10 eV and a wide transmission window of 0.29-5.4 μm, which are superior to those of most molybdate crystals. More importantly, Raman spectroscopic measurements demonstrated that the title compound possesses an intense Raman shift located at 925 cm-1 and narrow line width, facilitating a stimulated Raman laser. In addition, first-principles calculations were also implemented to elucidate the structure-property relationships of Rb3LiZn2(MoO4)4. These observations provide an empirical platform for intuitively comprehending the underlying properties of multiple molybdates and pave the way for exploiting Raman crystals.

Abstract
Exploring significant ultraviolet/deep-ultraviolet nonlinear optical (NLO) materials is hindered by rigorous and contradictory requirements, especially, possessing a moderate optical birefringence to meet phase-matching (PM). Except for suitable birefringence, small chromatic dispersion is also crucial to blue-shift the PM wavelength. Here, the introduction of fluorinated tetrahedral boron-centred chromophore strategy was proposed to optimize the chromatic dispersion. Herein, [BF4]- unit with large HOMO-LUMO band gap was introduced to Na-B-O-F system and Na4B8O9F10 was designed and synthesized successfully for the first time. Na4B8O9F10 with optimized chromatic dispersion can achieve a short second harmonic generation PM wavelength of 240 nm with a relatively small birefringence (cal. 0.036@1064 nm). Notably, Na4B8O9F10 is the first acentric crystal with [BF4]- unit among reported metal-fluorooxoborate system, involving isolated [BF4]- and novel [B7O10F6]5- fundamental building blocks.

Abstract
Oxide crystals have been widely used in nonlinear optics (NLO) in the ultraviolet-visible and near-infrared regions. Most traditional oxide crystals are restricted to the mid-infrared region due to their narrow transmission window. Hence, attempting to extend infrared cutoff wavelength of oxides has attracted much attention. Herein, we report two new tellurates Li2 TiTeO6 (LTT) and Li2 SnTeO6 (LST) with broad transparent regions of 0.38-6.72 and 0.38-6.86 μm, respectively, as excellent candidates for mid-infrared NLO applications. Both LTT and LST crystallize in the orthorhombic space group Pnn2. The LTT crystal exhibits intense powder second-order generation efficiency (26×KDP) under the fundamental wavelength of 1064 nm. First-principles calculations and dipole moments were used to illustrate the results of the powder second-harmonic generations based on the crystal structures. Our results provide a novel oxide NLO crystal with a strong SHG and wide transparency range. They also pave a way for the design of new oxide mid-IR NLO crystals.

Abstract
Nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals are widely applied in information technology, micro-manufacturing and medical treatment. Herein, a new lead mixed halide with strong second-harmonic generation (SHG) response, Cs3 Pb2 (CH3 COO)2 Br3 I2 , has been designed and rationally synthesized. Cs3 Pb2 (CH3 COO)2 Br3 I2 represents the rare NLO crystal featuring that three different anions (I- , Br- and O2- ) simultaneously coordinate the Pb(II) atom to form a severely distorted [PbBr2 I2 O2 ] polyhedron with a large polarizability. Remarkably, Cs3 Pb2 (CH3 COO)2 Br3 I2 not only exhibits a very strong phase-matching SHG response of 9×KH2 PO4 (KDP), but also possesses a large birefringence (0.27@1064 nm) and high laser damage threshold (LDT). The strong SHG effect of Cs3 Pb2 (CH3 COO)2 Br3 I2 mainly originates from the oriented arrangement of [Pb2 Br3 I2 ] chains. This study points out an effective strategy to develop new NLO crystals with strong SHG response.

Abstract
Four chiral coordination polymers (CPs), M[(S,S)-C14 H14 N2 O6 ] and M[(R,R)-C14 H14 N2 O6 ] (M=Zn or Cd), have been exclusively synthesized in high yields with the aid of newly designed chiral ligand under hydrothermal condition. The CPs crystallizing in the orthorhombic nonpolar space group, C2221 , reveal three-dimensional framework structures composed of MO4 tetrahedra and the corresponding homochiral linkers. Powder second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurements indicate that the nonpolar CPs reveal very strong SHG efficiency of ca. 5-9 times that of KH2 PO4 and exhibit type-I phase-matching behavior. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the unusually large SHG efficiency found from the nonpolar CPs should be attributable to the synergistic effect of polarizable metal cations and enhanced hyperpolarizability in the donor-acceptor system originating from the hydrogen bonding in the coordinated linkers.

Abstract
Study of mid-infrared (mid-IR) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials is hindered by the competing requirements of optimized second-harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient dij and laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) as well as the harsh synthetic conditions. Herein, we report facile hydrothermal synthesis of a polar NLO vanadate Cs4 V8 O22 (CVO) featuring a quasi-rigid honeycomb-layered structure with [VO4 ] and [VO5 ] polyhedra aligned parallel. CVO possesses a wide IR-transparent window, high LIDT, and congruent-melting behavior. It has very strong phase-matchable SHG intensities in metal vanadate family (12.0 × KDP @ 1064 nm and 2.2 × AGS @ 2100 nm). First-principles calculations suggest that the exceptional SHG responses of CVO largely originate from virtual electronic transitions within [V4 O11 ]∞ layer; the excellent optical transmittance of CVO arises from the special characteristics of vibrational phonons resulting from the layered structure.

Abstract
The discovery of new nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals with excellent properties is in urgently demand because of their ability to generate coherent light. Herein, we report an unique NLO lead bromide formate, KCs2 [Pb2 Br5 (HCOO)2 ], which has been synthesized by a mix-solvothermal method. KCs2 [Pb2 Br5 (HCOO)2 ] exhibits strong phase-matching second-harmonic generation (SHG) response (6.5×KDP), large birefringence (0.16@ 1064 nm), and a wide transparent window in most visible light and mid-IR region. Interestingly, KCs2 [Pb2 Br5 (HCOO)2 ] features a polar 3D lead-bromide framework in which adjacent Pb-Br layers containing coplanar Pb6 Br6 rings are not only parallel to each other, but also orient in the same direction. These oriented arrangements are responsible for the strong SHG response and large birefringence that are elucidated by both local dipole moment and theoretical calculations. This research provides a new strategy to explore subsequent NLO crystals.

Abstract
Large band gap and strong nonlinear optical (NLO) effect are two valuable but contradictory parameters, which are difficult to balance in one infrared (IR) NLO material. Herein, the first alkali and alkaline-earth metal diamond-like (DL) IR NLO material Li4 MgGe2 S7 , presenting a honeycomb-like 3D framework constructed by 6-membered LiS4 rings and GeMgS6 zigzag chains, was rationally designed and synthesized. The introduction of rigid alkali metal and alkaline-earth metal LiS4 and MgS4 tetrahedra effectively broadens the band gap of DL compound to 4.12 eV (the largest one in the reported quaternary metal chalcogenides), generating a high laser damage threshold of 7 × AgGaS2 at 1064 nm. Furthermore, Li4 MgGe2 S7 displays a suitable SHG response (0.7 × AgGaS2 ) with a type I phase-matching behavior. The results indicate that Li4 MgGe2 S7 is a promising IR NLO material for the high-power laser application and it provides an insight into the design of new DL compound with outstanding IR NLO performances.

Abstract
To design pnictide nonlinear optical materials with wide band gap and large second-harmonic generation, the heavy halogen I was introduced into pnictides through anionic aliovalent substitution with diamond-like ZnS as templates. Thus, four excellent halopnictide-based infrared nonlinear optical crystals, MII 3 PnI3 (MII =Zn, Cd; Pn=P, As), were obtained. They all exhibited defect diamond-like structures with highly parallel-oriented [MII PnI3 ] mixed-anionic tetrahedral groups, leading to excellent physical properties including wide band gaps (2.38-2.85 eV), large second harmonic generation responses (2.7-5.1×AgGaS2 ), high laser-induced damage thresholds (5.5-10.7×AgGaS2 ), and good IR transparency. In particular, Cd3 PI3 and Cd3 AsI3 achieved phase-matching (Δn=0.035 and 0.031) that their template β-ZnS could not do. Anionic aliovalent substitution provides a feasible strategy to design novel promising halopnictide IR NLO materials.
