Nanoparticles as Recyclable Catalysts: The Frontier between Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Catalysis

A multidentate copper complex on magnetic biochar nanoparticles as a practical and recoverable nanocatalyst for the selective synthesis of tetrazole derivatives

Waste recycling, novel and easy methods of recycling catalysts, use of green solvents, use of selective catalysts and preventing the production of by-products are the most important principles of green chemistry and modern technology. Therefore, in this work, biochar nanoparticles (B-NPs) were synthesized by the pyrolysis of chicken manure as a novel method for waste recycling. Subsequently, the B-NPs were magnetized by Fe(0) nanoparticles to improve the easy recovery of biochar. Then, the surface of biochar magnetic nanoparticles (FeB-MNPs) was modified by (3-chloropropyl)trimethoxysilane (3Cl-PTMS). Finally, a multidentate copper complex of 2,2'-(propane-1,3-diylbis(oxy))dianiline (P.bis(OA)) was immobilized on the surface of modified FeB-MNPs, which was labeled as Cu-P.bis(OA)@FeB-MNPs. Cu-P.bis(OA)@FeB-MNPs was investigated as a commercial, homoselective, practical, and recyclable nanocatalyst in the synthesis of 5-substituted-1H-tetrazole compounds through the [3 + 2] cycloaddition of sodium azide (NaN3) and organo-nitriles in polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG-400) as a green solvent. Cu-P.bis(OA)@FeB-MNPs was characterized using wavelength dispersive X-ray (WDX) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM), atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and N2 adsorption-desorption (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method) techniques. Cu-P.bis(OA)@FeB-MNPs was recovered and reused for several runs in the synthesis of tetrazoles.

Constructing Pd and Cu Crowding Single Atoms by Protein Confinement to Promote Sonogashira Reaction

For multicenter-catalyzed reactions, it is important to accurately construct heterogeneous catalysts containing multiple active centers with high activity and low cost, which is more challenging compared to homogeneous catalysts because of the low activity and spatial confinement of active centers in the loaded state. Herein, a convenient protein confinement strategy is reported to locate Pd and Cu single atoms in crowding state on carbon coated alumina for promoting Sonogashira reaction, the most powerful method for constructing the acetylenic moiety in molecules. The single-atomic Pd and Cu centers take advantage in not only the maximized atomic utilization for low cost, but also the much-enhanced performance by facilitating the activation of aryl halides and alkynes. Their locally crowded dispersion brings them closer to each other, which facilitates the transmetallation process of acetylide intermediates between them. Thus, the Sonogashira reaction is drove smoothly by the obtained catalyst with a turnover frequency value of 313 h-1, much more efficiently than that by commercial Pd/C and CuI catalyst, conventional Pd and Cu nanocatalysts, and mixed Pd and Cu single-atom catalyst. The obtained catalyst also exhibits the outstanding durability in the recycling test.

3-(Sulfamic acid)-propyltriethoxysilane on biochar nanoparticles as a practical, biocompatible, recyclable and chemoselective nanocatalyst in organic reactions

Recyclable and inexpensive catalysts, waste regeneration, use of available and safe solvents are important principles of green chemistry. Therefore, in this project, biochar nanoparticles (BNPs) were synthesized by the pyrolysis method from chicken manure. Then, 3-(sulfamic acid)-propyltriethoxysilane (SAPES) was immobilized on the surface of BNPs (SAPES@BNPs). The prepared catalyst (SAPES@BNPs) was used as a commercial, practical, biocompatible and reusable catalyst in the selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides. Further, the catalytic application of SAPES@BNPs was explored in the multicomponent synthesis of tetrahydrobenzo[b]pyrans under mild and green conditions. BNPs were characterized using SEM, TGA and XRD techniques. SAPES@BNPs were characterized using SEM, FT-IR spectroscopy, WDX, EDS, TGA, and XRD techniques. Particle size distribution was obtained by histogram graph. SAPES@BNPs can be recovered and reused several times. The purity of the products was studied using NMR spectroscopy.

Synthesis of Silicon and Germanium Oxide Nanostructures via Photonic Curing; a Facile Approach to Scale Up Fabrication

Silicon and Germanium oxide (SiOx and GeOx) nanostructures are promising materials for energy storage applications due to their potentially high energy density, large lithiation capacity (~10X carbon), low toxicity, low cost, and high thermal stability. This work reports a unique approach to achieving controlled synthesis of SiOx and GeOx nanostructures via photonic curing. Unlike conventional methods like rapid thermal annealing, quenching during pulsed photonic curing occurs rapidly (sub-millisecond), allowing the trapping of metastable states to form unique phases and nanostructures. We explored the possible underlying mechanism of photonic curing by incorporating laws of photophysics, photochemistry, and simulated temperature profile of thin film. The results show that photonic curing of spray coated 0.1 M molarity Si and Ge Acetyl Acetate precursor solution, at total fluence 80 J cm-2 can yield GeOx and SiOx nanostructures. The as-synthesized nanostructures are ester functionalized due to photoinitiated chemical reactions in thin film during photonic curing. Results also showed that nanoparticle size changes from ~48 nm to ~11 nm if overall fluence is increased by increasing the number of pulses. These results are an important contribution towards large-scale synthesis of the Ge and Si oxide nanostructured materials which is necessary for next-generation energy storage devices.

Lattice-Strained Bimetallic Nanocatalysts: Fundamentals of Synthesis and Structure

Bimetallic nanostructured catalysts have shown great promise in the areas of energy, environment and magnetics. Tunable composition and electronic configurations due to lattice strain at bimetal interfaces have motivated researchers worldwide to explore them industrial applications. However, to date, the fundamentals of the synthesis of lattice-mismatched bimetallic nanocrystals are still largely uninvestigated for most supported catalyst materials. Therefore, in this work, we have conducted a detailed review of the synthesis and structural characterization of bimetallic nanocatalysts, particularly for renewable energies. In particular, the synthesis of Pt, Au and Pd bimetallic particles in a liquid phase has been critically discussed. The outcome of this review is to provide industrial insights of the rational design of cost-effective nanocatalysts for sustainable conversion technologies.

Enhanced photocatalytic performance of coaxially electrospun titania nanofibers comprising yolk-shell particles

The present paper reports the fabrication of novel types of hybrid fibrous photocatalysts by combining block copolymer (BCP) templating, sol-gel processing, and coaxial electrospinning techniques. Coaxial electrospinning produces core-shell nanofibers (NFs), which are converted into hollow porous TiO2 NFs using an oxidative calcination step. Hybrid BCP micelles comprising a single plasmonic nanoparticle (NP) in their core and thereof derived silica-coated core-shell particles are utilized as precursors to generate yolk-shell type particulate inclusions in photocatalytically active NFs. The catalytic and photocatalytic activity of calcined NFs comprising different types of yolk-shell particles is systematically investigated and compared. Interestingly, calcined NFs comprising silica-coated yolk-shells demonstrate enhanced catalytic and photocatalytic performance despite the presence of silica shell separating plasmonic NP from the TiO2 matrix. Electromagnetic simulations indicate that this enhancement is caused by a localized surface plasmon resonance and a confinement effect in silica-coated yolk-shells embedded in porous TiO2 NFs. Utilization of the coaxially electrospun TiO2 NFs in combination with yolk-shells comprising plasmonic NPs reveals to be a potent method for the photocatalytic decomposition of numerous pollutants. It is worth noting that this study stands as the first occurrence of combining yolk-shells (Au@void@SiO2) with porous electrospun NFs (TiO2) for photocatalytic purposes and gaining an understanding of plasmon and confinement effects for photocatalytic performance. This approach represents a promising route for fabricating highly active and up-scalable fibrous photocatalytic systems.

Niobic acid as a support for microheterogeneous nanocatalysis of sodium borohydride hydrolysis under mild conditions

This study explores the stabilization by niobic acid, of Pt, Ni, Pd, and Au nanoparticles (NPs) for the efficient microheterogeneous catalysis of NaBH4 hydrolysis for hydrogen production. Niobic acid is the most widely studied Nb2O5 polymorph, and it is employed here for the first time for this key reaction relevant to green energy. Structural insights from XRD, Raman, and FTIR spectroscopies, combined with hydrogen production data, reveal the role of niobic acid's Brønsted acidity in its catalytic activity. The supported NPs showed significantly higher efficiency than the non-supported counterparts regarding turnover frequency, average hydrogen production rate, and cost. Among the tested NPs, PtNPs and NiNPs demonstrate the most favorable results. The data imply mechanism changes during the reaction, and the kinetic isotope assay indicates a primary isotope effect. Reusability assays demonstrate consistent yields over five cycles for PtNPs, although catalytic efficiency decreases, likely due to the formation of reaction byproducts.

Boosting Electrochemiluminescence Performance of a Dual-Active Site Iron Single-Atom Catalyst-Based Luminol-Dissolved Oxygen System via Plasmon-Induced Hot Holes

Due to the commonly low content of biomarkers in diseases, increasing the sensitivity of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) systems is of great significance for in vitro ECL diagnosis and biodetection. Although dissolved O2 (DO) has recently been considered superior to H2O2 as a coreactant in the most widely used luminol ECL systems owing to its improved stability and less biotoxicity, it still has unsatisfactory ECL performance because of its ultralow reactivity. In this study, an effective plasmonic luminol-DO ECL system has been developed by complexing luminol-capped Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) with plasma-treated Fe single-atom catalysts (Fe-SACs) embedded in graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) (pFe-g-CN). Under optimal conditions, the performance of the resulting ECL system could be markedly increased up to 1300-fold compared to the traditional luminol-DO system. Further investigations revealed that duple binding sites of pFe-g-CN and plasmonically induced hot holes that disseminated from AgNPs to g-CN surfaces lead to facilitate significantly the luminous reaction process of the system. The proposed luminol-DO ECL system was further employed for the stable and ultrasensitive detection of prostate-specific antigen in a wide linear range of 1.0 fg/mL to 1 μg/mL, with a pretty low limit of detection of 0.183 fg/mL.

Use of carboxymethyl cellulose as binder for the production of water-soluble catalysts

Bio-based polymers are materials of high interest given the harmful environmental impact that involves the use of non-biodegradable fossil products for industrial applications. These materials are also particularly interesting as bio-based ligands for the preparation of metal nanoparticles (MNPs), employed as catalysts for the synthesis of high value chemicals. In the present study, Ru (0) and Rh(0) Metal Nanoparticles supported on Sodium Carboxymethyl cellulose (MNP(0)s-CMCNa) were prepared by simply mixing RhCl3x3H2O or RuCl3 with an aqueous solution of CMCNa, followed by NaBH4 reduction. The formation of MNP(0)s-CMCNa was confirmed by FT-IR and XRD, and their size estimated to be around 1.5 and 2.2 nm by TEM analysis. MNP(0)s-CMCNa were employed for the hydrogenation of (E)-cinnamic aldehyde, furfural and levulinic acid. Hydrogenation experiments revealed that CMCNa is an excellent ligand for the stabilization of Rh(0) and Ru(0) nanoparticles allowing to obtain high conversions (>90 %) and selectivities (>98 %) with all substrates tested. Easy recovery by liquid/liquid extraction allowed to separate the catalyst from the reaction products, and recycling experiments demonstrated that MNPs-CS were highly efficiency up to three times in best hydrogenation conditions.

Spontaneous Formation of Ultrasmall Noble Metal Nanoparticles on Cobalt-Based Layered Double Hydroxide for Electrochemical and Environmental Catalysis

Supported noble metal nanoparticles (NMNPs) are appealing for energy and environment catalysis. To facilitate the loading of NMNPs, in situ reduction of Mn+ on the support with extra reductants/surfactants is adopted, but typically results in aggregated NMNPs with uneven size distributions or blocked active sites of the NMNPs. Herein, the use of cobalt layered double hydroxide (Co-LDH) is proposed as both support and reductant for the preparation of supported NMNPs with ultrasmall sizes and even distributions. The resultant Co-LDH-supported NMNPs exhibit excellent catalytic performance and stability. For example, Ir/Co-LDH displays a low overpotential of 188 mV (10 mA cm-2) for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction and a long-term stability over 100 h (100 mA cm-2) in overall water splitting. Ru/Co-LDH can achieve a 4-nitrophenol reduction with high rate of 0.36 min-1 and S2- detection with low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.34 µm. Overall, this work provides a green and effective strategy to fabricate supported NMNPs with greatly improved catalytic performances.

Near-infrared Light-Induced Polymerizations: Mechanisms and Applications

Photopolymerizations have garnered significant attention in polymer science due to their low polymerization temperature, high production efficiency, environmental friendliness, and spatial controllability. Despite these merits, the poor penetration and severe chemical damage from ultraviolet/visible (UV/Vis) light resources pose significant barriers to their success in conventional photopolymerizations. A recent breakthrough involving the utilization of near-infrared (NIR) laser with long wavelength has been exploited for diverse applications. With the combination of a NIR photosensitizer (PS), NIR-induced photopolymerizations have been successfully developed to alleviate the challenges in conventional methods. The enhancement of penetration depth and safety of NIR-induced photopolymerizations can contribute significantly to improving the efficiency of polymerization for production of intricate structures across various scales. In this concept, the typical types of PSs and polymerization mechanisms (PMs) within the NIR-induced photopolymerization systems have been classified in detail. Additionally, the applications of various polymers achieved by NIR-induced photopolymerizations are summarized. Furthermore, research directions and future challenges of this field are also discussed comprehensively.

Towards High-Performance Photo-Fenton Degradation of Organic Pollutants with Magnetite-Silver Composites: Synthesis, Catalytic Reactions and In Situ Insights

In this study, Fe3O4/Ag magnetite-silver (MSx) nanocomposites were investigated as catalysts for advanced oxidation processes by coupling the plasmonic effect of silver nanoparticles and the ferromagnetism of iron oxide species. A surfactant-free co-precipitation synthesis method yielded pure Fe3O4 magnetite and four types of MSx nanocomposites. Their characterisation included structural, compositional, morphological and optical analyses, revealing Fe3O4 magnetite and Ag silver phases with particle sizes ranging from 15 to 40 nm, increasing with the silver content. The heterostructures with silver reduced magnetite particle aggregation, as confirmed by dynamic light scattering. The UV-Vis spectra showed that the Fe:Ag ratio strongly influenced the absorbance, with a strong absorption band around 400 nm due to the silver phase. The oxidation kinetics of organic pollutants, monitored by in situ luminescence measurements using rhodamine B as a model system, demonstrated the higher performance of the developed catalysts with increasing Ag content. The specific surface area measurements highlighted the importance of active sites in the synergistic catalytic activity of Fe3O4/Ag nanocomposites in the photo-Fenton reaction. Finally, the straightforward fabrication of diverse Fe3O4/Ag heterostructures combining magnetism and plasmonic effects opens up promising possibilities for heterogeneous catalysis and environmental remediation.

Selective Adsorbent Design with Multifunctional Surfaces: Innovating Solutions for Heterogeneous Catalysis in Water

Heterogeneous catalytic systems with water as the solvent often have the disadvantage of cross-contamination, while concerns about the purification and workup of the aqueous phase after reactions are rare in the lab or industry. In this context, designing and developing the functional selective solid adsorbent and revealing the adsorption mechanism can provide a new strategy and guidelines for constructing supported heterogeneous catalysts to address these issues. Herein, we report the stable composite adsorbent (Fe/ATP@PPy: magnetic Fe3O4/attapulgite with the polypyrrole shell) that features an integrated multifunctional surface, which can effectively tune the selective adsorption processes for Cu2+, Co2+, and Ni2+ ions and nitrobenzene via the cooperative chemisorption/physisorption in an aqueous system. The adsorption experiments showed that Fe/ATP@PPy displayed significantly higher adsorption selectivity for Ni2+ than Cu2+ and Co2+ ions, especially which exhibited an approximate 100.00% removal for both Ni2+ ions and nitrobenzene in the mixture system with a low concentration. Furthermore, combined tracking adsorption of Ni2+ ions and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization confirmed that the effective adsorption occurs via ion transfer coordination; the pathway was further validated at the molecular level through theoretical modeling. In addition, the selective adsorption mechanism was proposed based on the adsorption experiment, characterization, and the corresponding density functional theory calculation.

Fe3O4@SiO2@CSH+VO3- as a novel recyclable heterogeneous catalyst with core-shell structure for oxidation of sulfides

Iron nanoparticles, with low toxicity and many active sites, are among the materials that not only reduce waste along with green chemistry but also increase the separation power and recover the catalyst from the reaction environment. In this study, first, the surface of iron nanoparticles was silanized, and in the next step, the complex of chitosan HCl.VO3 was placed on the surface of Fe3O4 (Fe3O4@SiO2@CSH+VO3-). This nanocatalyst is a novel, recoverable, and potent nanocatalyst with high selectivity for the oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides. Various physicochemical techniques such as IR, XRD, TGA, SEM, EDX, mapping, TEM, and VSM were used to affirm the well synthesis of the catalyst. Oxidation of sulfides in the presence of hydrogen peroxide as a green oxidant and in ethanol was catalyzed by the Fe3O4@SiO2@CSH+VO3-. All sulfoxides were achieved with high efficiency and in a short time. The notable privileges of this method include facile and economic catalyst synthesis, proper catalyst durability, great performance, simple catalyst isolation, good recovery capability, at least up to 5 times without an index drop in catalytic power.

Defect-mediated time-efficient photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue and ciprofloxacin using tungsten-incorporated ternary perovskite BaSnO3 nanoparticles

Photocatalytic water purification has been extensively explored for its economic, eco-friendly, and sustainable aspects. In this study, tungsten (W) incorporated BaSn1-xWxO3 (x = 0 to 0.05) nanoparticles synthesized by facile hydrogen peroxide precipitation route has been demonstrated for photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye and ciprofloxacin (CIP) antibiotic. The structural analysis indicates the presence of hybrid composite-like nanostructures with reduced crystallinity. Optical studies reveal blueshift in bandgap and decrease in oxygen vacancy defects upon W-incorporation. Pure BaSnO3 shows overall enhanced photocatalytic activity towards MB (90.22%) and CIP (78.12%) after 240 min of white LED light and sunlight irradiation respectively. The 2 % W-incorporated BaSnO3 shows superior photocatalytic degradation of MB (26.89%) and CIP (45.14%) within first 30 min of irradiation confirming the presence of W to be beneficial in the process. The free radical study revealed the dominant role of reactive hole (h+) and oxygen radical (O2•-) species during photodegradation and their intermediates are investigated to elucidate the degradation mechanism of MB within 30 min of irradiation. This study is promising towards developing defect mediated and time-efficient photocatalysts for environmental remediation.

Catalytic innovations: Improving wastewater treatment and hydrogen generation technologies

The effective reduction of hazardous organic pollutants in wastewater is a pressing global concern, necessitating the development of advanced treatment technologies. Pollutants such as nitrophenols and dyes, which pose significant risks to both human and aquatic health, making their reduction particularly crucial. Despite the existence of various methods to eliminate these pollutants, they are not without limitations. The utilization of nanomaterials as catalysts for chemical reduction exhibits a promising alternative owing to their distinguished catalytic activity and substantial surface area. For catalytically reducing the pollutants NaBH4 has been utilized as a useful source for it because it reduces the pollutants quiet efficiently and it also releases hydrogen gas as well which can be used as a source of energy. This paper provides a comprehensive review of recent research on different types of nanomaterials that function as catalysts to reduce organic pollutants and also generating hydrogen from NaBH4 methanolysis while also evaluating the positive and negative aspects of nanocatalyst. Additionally, this paper examines the features effecting the process and the mechanism of catalysis. The comparison of different catalysts is based on size of catalyst, reaction time, rate of reaction, hydrogen generation rate, activation energy, and durability. The information obtained from this paper can be used to steer the development of new catalysts for reducing organic pollutants and generation hydrogen by NaBH4 methanolysis.

One-Shot Dual-Detection-Based Single-Molecule Super-Resolution Imaging Method for Real-Time Observation of Spatiotemporal Catalytic Activity Variations on the Plasmonic Gold Nanoparticle Surface

Understanding the relationship between the surface properties of a single plasmonic nanoparticle and its catalytic performance is critical for developing highly efficient nanocatalysts. In this study, a one-shot dual-detection-based single-molecule super-resolution imaging method in the evanescent field was developed to observe real-time spatiotemporal catalytic activity on a single plasmonic gold nanoparticle (AuNP) surface. The scattering intensity of AuNPs and the fluorescence of resorufin molecules produced on the AuNP surface were obtained simultaneously to investigate the relationship between nanoparticles and catalytic reactions at a single-molecule level. Chemisorbed adsorbates (i.e., catalytic product and resorufin) changed the electron density of individual AuNPs throughout the catalytic cycle, resulting in the fluctuation of the scattering intensity of individual AuNPs, which was attributed to the electron transfer between reactant resazurin molecules and AuNPs. The increase in the electron density of individual AuNPs affected the catalytic reaction rate. Furthermore, sequential mapping of individual catalytic events at the subdiffraction limit resolution was completed for real-time surface dynamics and spatiotemporal activity variations on the single AuNP surface. The developed method can aid in understanding surface-property-dependent catalytic kinetics and facilitate the development of nanoparticle-based heterogeneous catalysts at subdiffraction limit resolution.

The Surface of Ionic Liquids in Water: From an Ionic Tug of War to a Quasi-Ordered Two-Dimensional Layer

The sustainable development encompasses the search for new materials for energy storage, gas capture, separation, and solvents in industrial processes that can substitute conventional ones in an efficient and clean manner. Ionic liquids (ILs) emerged and have been advanced as alternative materials for such applications, but an obstacle is their hygroscopicity and the effects on their physical properties in the presence of humidity. Several industrial processes depend on the aqueous interfacial properties, and the main focus of this work is the water/IL interface. The behavior of the aqueous ionic liquids at the water-vacuum interface is representative for their water interfacial properties. Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy in combination with molecular dynamics simulations we investigate four aqueous IL systems, and provide molecular level insight on the interfacial behaviour of the ionic liquids, such as ion-pair formation, orientation and surface concentration. We find that ionic liquids containing a chloride anion have a lowered surface enrichment due to the low surface propensity of chloride. In contrast, the ionic liquids containing a bistriflimide anion are extremely surface-enriched due to cooperative surface propensity between the cations and anions, forming a two-dimensional ionic liquid on the water surface at low concentrations.

Thermo-responsive chiral micelles as recyclable organocatalyst for asymmetric Rauhut-Currier reaction in water

Developing eco-friendly chiral organocatalysts with the combined advantages of homogeneous catalysis and heterogeneous processes is greatly desired. In this work, a family of amphiphilic one-handed helical polyisocyanides bearing phosphine pendants is prepared, which self-assembles into well-defined chiral micelles in water and showed thermo-responsiveness with a cloud point of approximately 38.4 °C. The micelles with abundant phosphine moieties at the interior efficiently catalyze asymmetric cross Rauhut-Currier reaction in water. Various water-insoluble substrates are transferred to target products in high yield with excellent enantioselectivity. The yield and enantiomeric excess (ee) of the product generated in water are up to 90% and 96%, respectively. Meanwhile, the yields of the same R-C reaction catalyzed by the polymer itself in organic solvents is <16%, with an ee < 72%. The homogeneous reaction of the chiral micelles in water turns to heterogeneous at temperatures higher than the cloud point, and the catalyst precipitation facilitates product isolation and catalyst recovery. The polymer catalyst is recycled 10 times while maintaining activity and enantioselectivity.

Pyromellitic acid grafted to cross-linked LDH by dendritic units: An efficient and recyclable heterogeneous catalyst for green synthesis of 2,3-dihydro quinazoline and dihydropyrimidinones derivatives

In this work, using layered double hydroxide (LDH) inorganic substrate, melamine as binding agent and dendrimer G1 and also pyromellitic acid (PMA) organic catalytic agent a heterogeneous acid catalyst was designed and prepared. After that, the prepared organic-inorganic catalyst was evaluated by various identification techniques such as FTIR, EDX, XRD, TGA, FESEM, and BET, and the results showed that the desired structure was successfully prepared. Also, in order to investigate the efficiency of the LDH@Me-PMA nanocatalyst as an efficient and heterogeneous catalyst, it was used for green and one-pot synthesis of 2,3-dihydro quinazoline and 3,4-dihydropyrimidinone-2-(1H)-ones derivatives. The use of LDH@Me-PMA catalyst led to the synthesis of the desired derivatives with higher efficiency and shorter reaction time than previously reported works. In addition, the prepared LDH@Me-PMA acid catalyst has the ability to be recycled and reused for 5 consecutive periods and has high stability, which is well consistent with the principles of green chemistry.

Amine Functionalization Leads to Enhanced Performance for Nickel- and Cobalt-Ferrite-Supported Palladium Catalysts in Nitrobenzene Hydrogenation

Easy preparation, good yield and easy recovery are the key challenges in the development of industrial catalysts. To meet all these three criteria, we have prepared intelligent, magnetizable NiFe2O4- and CoFe2O4-supported palladium catalysts that can be easily and completely recovered from the reaction medium by magnetic separation. The fast and facile preparation was achieved by a solvothermal method followed by sonochemical-assisted decomposition of the palladium nanoparticles onto the surface of the magnetic nanoparticles. The metal-support interaction was enhanced by amine functionalization of the supports using monoethanolamine. The performance and stability of the non-functionalized and amine-functionalized NiFe2O4- and CoFe2O4-supported palladium catalysts were compared in the industrially important nitrobenzene hydrogenation reaction. All catalysts showed high catalytic activity during aniline synthesis; complete nitrobenzene conversion and high aniline yield (above 97 n/n%) and selectivity (above 98 n/n%) were achieved. However, during reuse tests, the activity of the non-functionalized catalysts decreased, as the palladium was leached from the surface of the support. On the other hand, in the case of their amine-functionalized counterparts, there was no decrease in activity, and a non-significant decrease in palladium content could be measured. Based on these results, it can be concluded that amine functionalization of transition metal ferrites may result in more effective catalysts due to the enhanced metal-carrier interaction between the support and the precious metal.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene Boranes: Dual Reagents for the Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have drawn considerable interest in the field of nanomaterials chemistry as highly stabilizing ligands enabling the formation of strong and covalent carbon-metal bonds. Applied to gold nanoparticles synthesis, the most common strategy consists of the reduction of a preformed NHC-AuI complex with a large excess of a reducing agent that makes the particle size difficult to control. In this paper, we report the straightforward synthesis of NHC-coated gold nanoparticles (NHC-AuNPs) by treating a commercially available gold(I) precursor with an easy-to-synthesize NHC-BH3 reagent. The latter acts as both the reducing agent and the source of surface ligands operating under mild conditions. Mechanistic studies including NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry demonstrate that the reduction of gold(I) generates NHC-BH2 Cl as a by-product. This strategy gives efficient control over the nucleation and growth of gold particles by varying the NHC-borane/gold(I) ratio, allowing unparalleled particle size variation over the range of 4.9±0.9 to 10.0±2.7 nm. Our strategy also allows an unprecedented precise and controlled seeded growth of gold nanoparticles. In addition, the as-prepared NHC-AuNPs exhibit narrow size distributions without the need for extensive purification or size-selectivity techniques, and are stable over months.

Facile Hydrothermal Synthesis of Ag/Fe3O4/Cellulose Nanocomposite as Highly Active Catalyst for 4-Nitrophenol and Organic Dye Reduction

Novel effluent treatment solutions for dangerous organic pollutants are crucial worldwide. In recent years, chemical reduction using noble metal-based nanocatalysts and NaBH4, a reducing agent, has become common practice for eliminating organic contaminants from aquatic environments. We suggest a straightforward approach to synthesizing magnetic cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) modified with magnetite (Fe3O4) and silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) as a catalyst for organic contamination removal. Significantly, the CNC surface was decorated with Ag NPs without using any reducing agents or stabilizers. PXRD, FE-SEM, TEM, EDX, VSM, BET, and zeta potential tests characterized the Ag/Fe3O4/CNC nanocomposite. The nanocomposite's catalytic activity was tested by eliminating 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and the organic dyes methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) in an aqueous solution at 25 °C. The Ag/Fe3O4/CNC nanocomposite reduced 4-NP and decolored these hazardous organic dyes in a short time (2 to 5 min) using a tiny amount of catalyst (2.5 mg for 4-NP and 15 mg for MO and MB). The magnetic catalyst was removed and reused three times without losing catalytic activity. This work shows that the Ag/Fe3O4/CNC nanocomposite can chemically reduce harmful pollutants in effluent for environmental applications.

Unlocking the Potential of Deep Eutectic Solvents for C-H Activation and Cross-Coupling Reactions: A Review

Green chemistry principles have underpinned the development of deep eutectic solvents (DESs). In this brief overview, we discuss the potential of DESs as a greener alternative to volatile organic solvents for cross-coupling and C-H activation reactions in organic chemistry. DESs offer numerous benefits, such as easy preparation, low toxicity, high biodegradability, and the potential to replace volatile organic compounds. The ability of DESs to recover the catalyst-solvent system enhances their sustainability. This review highlights recent advances and challenges in utilizing DESs as a reaction media, as well as the impact of physicochemical properties on the reaction process. Several types of reactions are studied to highlight their effectiveness at promoting C-C bond formation. Aside from demonstrating the success of DESs in this context, this review also discusses the limitations and future prospects of DESs in organic chemistry.

Complexation of turmeric and curcumin mediated silver nanoparticles with human serum albumin: Further investigation into the protein-corona formation, anti-bacterial effects and cell cytotoxicity studies

Biosynthesized noble metal nanoparticles have been of recent interest due to their broad implications in the future biomedicinal field. We have synthesized silver nanoparticle using turmeric-extract and its major component curcumin as reducing and stabilizing agents. Further, we have investigated the protein-NPs interaction focusing the inspection of the role of biosynthesized AgNPs on any conformational changes of the protein, binding and thermodynamic parameters using spectroscopic techniques. Fluorescence quenching studies revealed that both CUR-AgNPs and TUR-AgNPs have moderate binding affinities (∼10⁴ M^-1) towards human serum albumin (HSA) and static quenching mechanism was involved in the binding. Estimated thermodynamic parameters indicate the involvement of hydrophobic forces in the binding processes. The surface charge potential of the biosynthesized AgNPs became more negative upon complexation with HSA as observed from Zeta potential measurements. Antibacterial efficacies of the biosynthesized AgNPs were evaluated against Escherichia coli (gram-negative) and Enterococcus faecalis (gram-positive) bacterial strains. The AgNPs were found to destroy the cancer (HeLa) cell lines in vitro. The overall findings of our study successfully outline the detailed insight of the protein corona formation by biocompatible AgNPs and their biological applications concerning the future scope in the biomedicinal field.

Advances in CO2 utilization employing anisotropic nanomaterials as catalysts: a review

Anisotropic nanomaterials are materials with structures and properties that vary depending on the direction in which they are measured. Unlike isotropic materials, which exhibit uniform physical properties in all directions, anisotropic materials have different mechanical, electrical, thermal, and optical properties in different directions. Examples of anisotropic nanomaterials include nanocubes, nanowires, nanorods, nanoprisms, nanostars, and so on. These materials have unique properties that make them useful in a variety of applications, such as electronics, energy storage, catalysis, and biomedical engineering. One of the key advantages of anisotropic nanomaterials is their high aspect ratio, which refers to the ratio of their length to their width, which can enhance their mechanical and electrical properties, making them suitable for use in nanocomposites and other nanoscale applications. However, the anisotropic nature of these materials also presents challenges in their synthesis and processing. For example, it can be difficult to align the nanostructures in a specific direction to impart modulation of a specific property. Despite these challenges, research into anisotropic nanomaterials continues to grow, and scientists are working to develop new synthesis methods and processing techniques to unlock their full potential. Utilization of carbon dioxide (CO₂) as a renewable and sustainable source of carbon has been a topic of increasing interest due to its impact on reducing the level of greenhouse gas emissions. Anisotropic nanomaterials have been used to improve the efficiency of CO₂ conversion into useful chemicals and fuels using a variety of processes such as photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and thermocatalysis. More study is required to improve the usage of anisotropic nanomaterials for CO₂ consumption and to scale up these technologies for industrial use. The unique properties of anisotropic nanomaterials, such as their high surface area, tunable morphology, and high activity, make them promising catalysts for CO₂ utilization. This review article discusses briefly about various approaches towards the synthesis of anisotropic nanomaterials and their applications in CO₂ utilization. The article also highlights the challenges and opportunities in this field and the future direction of research.

From sandwich complexes to dendrimers: journey toward applications to sensing, molecular electronics, materials science, and biomedicine

This review links various areas of inorganic chemistry around the themes developed by our research group during the last four decades. It is firstly based on the electronic structure of iron sandwich complexes, showing how the metal electron count dictates their reactivities, with various applications (via C-H activation, C-C bond formation) as reducing and oxidizing agents, redox and electrocatalysts and precursors of dendrimers and catalyst templates through bursting reactions. Various electron-transfer processes and consequences are explored, including the influence of the redox state on the acidity of robust ligands and the possibility to iterate in situ C-H activation and C-C bond formation to build arene-cored dendrimers. Examples of how these dendrimers are functionalized are illustrated using the cross olefin metathesis reactions, with application to the synthesis of soft nanomaterials and biomaterials. Mixed and average valence complexes give rise to remarkable subsequent organometallic reactions, including the salt influence on these reactions. The stereo-electronic aspect of these mixed valencies is pointed out in star-shaped multi-ferrocenes with a frustration effect and other multi-organoiron systems, with the perspective of understanding electron-transfer processes among dendrimer redox sites involving electrostatic effects and application to redox sensing and polymer metallocene batteries. Dendritic redox sensing is summarized for biologically relevant anions such as ATP^2- with supramolecular exoreceptor interactions at the dendrimer periphery in parallel with the seminal work on metallocene-derived endoreceptors by Beer's group. This aspect includes the design of the first metallodendrimers that have applications in both redox sensing and micellar catalysis with nanoparticles. These properties provide the opportunity to summarize the biomedical (mostly anticancer) applications of ferrocenes, dendrimers and dendritic ferrocenes in biomedicine (in particular the contribution from our group, but not only). Finally, the use of dendrimers as templates for catalysis is illustrated with numerous reactions including C-C bond formation, click reactions and H₂ production reactions.

Modular Attachment of Nanoparticles on Microparticle Supports via Multifunctional Polymers

Nanoparticles are key to a range of applications, due to the properties that emerge as a result of their small size. However, their size also presents challenges to their processing and use, especially in relation to their immobilization on solid supports without losing their favorable functionalities. Here, we present a multifunctional polymer-bridge-based approach to attach a range of presynthesized nanoparticles onto microparticle supports. We demonstrate the attachment of mixtures of different types of metal-oxide nanoparticles, as well as metal-oxide nanoparticles modified with standard wet chemistry approaches. We then show that our method can also create composite films of metal and metal-oxide nanoparticles by exploiting different chemistries simultaneously. We finally apply our approach to the synthesis of designer microswimmers with decoupled mechanisms of steering (magnetic) and propulsion (light) via asymmetric nanoparticle binding, aka Toposelective Nanoparticle Attachment. We envision that this ability to freely mix available nanoparticles to produce composite films will help bridge the fields of catalysis, nanochemistry, and active matter toward new materials and applications.

Time-Resolved Formation and Operation Maps of Pd Catalysts Suggest a Key Role of Single Atom Centers in Cross-Coupling

An approach to the spatially localized characterization of supported catalysts over a reaction course is proposed. It consists of a combination of scanning, transmission, and high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy to determine metal particles from arrays of surface nanoparticles to individual nanoparticles and individual atoms. The study of the evolution of specific metal catalyst particles at different scale levels over time, particularly before and after the cross-coupling catalytic reaction, made it possible to approach the concept of 4D catalysis-tracking the positions of catalytic centers in space (3D) over time (+1D). The dynamic behavior of individual palladium atoms and nanoparticles in cross-coupling reactions was recorded with nanometer accuracy via the precise localization of catalytic centers. Single atoms of palladium leach out into solution from the support under the action of the catalytic system, where they exhibit extremely high catalytic activity compared to surface metal nanoparticles. Monoatomic centers, which make up only approximately 1% of palladium in the Pd/C system, provide more than 99% of the catalytic activity. The remaining palladium nanoparticles changed their shape and could move over the surface of the support, which was recorded by processing images of the array of nanoparticles with a neural network and aligning them using automatically detected keypoints. The study reveals a novel opportunity for single-atom catalysis─easier detachment (capture) from (on) the carbon support surface is the origin of superior catalytic activity, rather than the operation of single atomic catalytic centers on the surface of the support, as is typically assumed.

Noble-Metal Nanoparticle-Embedded Silicon Nanogratings via Single-Step Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Structuring

Here, we show that direct femtosecond laser nanostructuring of monocrystalline Si wafers in aqueous solutions containing noble-metal precursors (such as palladium dichloride, potassium hexachloroplatinate, and silver nitrate) allows for the creation of nanogratings decorated with mono- (Pd, Pt, and Ag) and bimetallic (Pd-Pt) nanoparticles (NPs). Multi-pulse femtosecond-laser exposure was found to drive periodically modulated ablation of the Si surface, while simultaneous thermal-induced reduction of the metal-containing acids and salts causes local surface morphology decoration with functional noble metal NPs. The orientation of the formed Si nanogratings with their nano-trenches decorated with noble-metal NPs can be controlled by the polarization direction of the incident laser beam, which was justified, for both linearly polarized Gaussian and radially (azimuthally) polarized vector beams. The produced hybrid NP-decorated Si nanogratings with a radially varying nano-trench orientation demonstrated anisotropic antireflection performance, as well as photocatalytic activity, probed by SERS tracing of the paraaminothiophenol-to-dimercaptoazobenzene transformation. The developed single-step maskless procedure of liquid-phase Si surface nanostructuring that proceeds simultaneously with the localized reduction of noble-metal precursors allows for the formation of hybrid Si nanogratings with controllable amounts of mono- and bimetallic NPs, paving the way toward applications in heterogeneous catalysis, optical detection, light harvesting, and sensing.

Peroxidase-Mimicking Hierarchically Organized Gold Particles for Glucose Detection

In this work, we synthesize a series of hierarchically organized gold nanoparticles (Au HOPs-X) with peroxidase (POD)-like catalytic activity by the in situ reduction of Au-thiolate hierarchically organized particles (Au HOPs). The initial Au HOPs show little POD-like catalytic activity. However, after the reduction of the particles, the Au HOPs-X showed enhanced POD-like catalytic activity, where X represents the reduction degree of Au HOPs. The reasons are as follows: (1) the Au-thiolate complexes on the surface of the Au HOPs-X were reduced into Au nanoparticles, and the active Au⁰ content increases with the increase of the reduction degree; (2) the specific surface area of Au HOPs-X becomes larger. Based on this, the Au HOPs-10 with the highest catalytic activity were combined with glucose oxidase to obtain a standard curve as a function of glucose concentrations. The color of the solutions was captured by mobile phone photos to determine their saturation, and the rapid detection of glucose was achieved through the standard curve of glucose concentration and saturation determined in this study.

Ionic Liquids: Advances and Applications in Phase Transfer Catalysis

Ionic liquids are a family of liquids that are composed entirely of ions and usually have melting points lower than 100 °C. Extensive research, along with the ever-growing interest of the scientific community, allowed for the development of a multitude of ionic liquids with low melting points. Such compounds are considered neoteric materials as well as ideal, custom-made solvents for a variety of different chemical transformations. In this regard, the importance of phase transfer catalysis is evident in a diversity of substrates and reactions. The use of phase transfer catalysts allows the reaction to proceed, facilitating the transfer of otherwise insoluble reactants to the desired phase. Recent scientific advances led to the emergence of ionic liquids, which are excellent candidates as phase transfer catalysts. The inherent fine-tuning capability of these molecules, along with the potential of phase transfer catalytic reactions, epitomize the sustainable aspect of this field of research. Herein, a cohesive report of such applications will be presented, including the period from the last decade of the 20th century up to date.

Hyper crosslinked polymer supported NHC stabilized gold nanoparticles with excellent catalytic performance in flow processes

Highly active and selective heterogeneous catalysis driven by metallic nanoparticles relies on a high degree of stabilization of such nanomaterials facilitated by strong surface ligands or deposition on solid supports. In order to tackle these challenges, N-heterocyclic carbene stabilized gold nanoparticles (NHC@AuNPs) emerged as promising heterogeneous catalysts. Despite the high degree of stabilization obtained by NHCs as surface ligands, NHC@AuNPs still need to be loaded on support structures to obtain easily recyclable and reliable heterogeneous catalysts. Therefore, the combination of properties obtained by NHCs and support structures as NHC bearing "functional supports" for the stabilization of AuNPs is desirable. Here, we report the synthesis of hyper-crosslinked polymers containing benzimidazolium as NHC precursors to stabilize AuNPs. Following the successful synthesis of hyper-crosslinked polymers (HCP), a two-step procedure was developed to obtain HCP·NHC@AuNPs. Detailed characterization not only revealed the successful NHC formation but also proved that the NHC functions as a stabilizer to the AuNPs in the porous polymer network. Finally, HCP·NHC@AuNPs were evaluated in the catalytic decomposition of 4-nitrophenol. In batch reactions, a conversion of greater than 99% could be achieved in as little as 90 s. To further evaluate the catalytic capability of HCP·NHC@AuNP, the catalytic decomposition of 4-nitrophenol was also performed in a flow setup. Here the catalyst not only showed excellent catalytic conversion but also exceptional recyclability while maintaining the catalytic performance.

Structure effects of Pt15 clusters for the oxygen reduction reaction: first-principles calculations

In the present work, the lowest energy structures and electronic properties of Pt₁₅ clusters are investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. The results showed that the most stable configuration is a capped pyramidal structure, which is 0.8 kal mol^-1 lower in energy than a layered structure previously reported [V. Kumar and Y. Kawazoe, Evolution of Atomic and Electronic Structure of Pt Clusters: Planar, Layered, Pyramidal, Cage, Cubic, and Octahedral Growth, Phys. Rev. B: Condens. Matter Mater. Phys., 2008, 77, 205418.]. The result is further confirmed by using both the PW91/cc-pVDZ-PP and PBE/PW approaches including the other representative isomers for Pt₁₅. Due to the interesting structure arrangements found, we have investigated the catalytic activities for the oxygen reduction reaction. We found that the most stable Pt₁₅ clusters are plausible catalyts for the ORR according to their interaction with oxygen species, which is consistent with experiments of Pt clusters with atomicity below 20. The results of the structure, electronic, adsorption and vibrational properties of the clusters are provided.

FePO4 supported Rh subnano clusters with dual active sites for efficient hydrogenation of quinoline under mild conditions

Chemoselective hydrogenation of quinoline and its derivatives under mild reaction conditions still remains a challenging topic, which requires a suitable interaction between reactants and a catalyst to achieve high performance and stability. Herein, FePO₄-supported Rh single atoms, subnano clusters and nanoparticle catalysts were synthesized and evaluated in the chemoselective hydrogenation of quinoline. The results show that the Rh subnano cluster catalyst with a size of ∼1 nm gives a specific reaction rate of 353 mol_quinoline mol_Rh^-1 h^-1 and a selectivity of >99% for 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline under mild conditions of 50 °C and 5 bar H₂, presenting better performance compared with the Rh single atoms and nanoparticle counterparts. Moreover, the Rh subnano cluster catalyst exhibits good stability and substrate universality for the hydrogenation of various functionalized quinolines. A series of characterization studies demonstrate that the acidic properties of the FePO₄ support favors the adsorption of quinoline while the Rh subnano clusters promote the dissociation of H₂ molecules, and then contribute to the enhanced hydrogenation performance. This work provides an important implication to design efficient Rh-based catalysts for chemoselective hydrogenation under mild conditions.

Ultrasound-promoted synthesis of a copper-iron-based catalyst for the microwave-assisted acyloxylation of 1,4-dioxane and cyclohexene

A copper-iron-based catalyst has been prepared by a low-temperature co-precipitation and sonication method. The use of high-energy ultrasound reduces the time required for the preparation process from one workweek to one day with respect to the catalysts obtained by conventional coprecipitation and thermal treatment methods. The resulting material has been characterized at compositional, textural, structural, and chemical levels by ICP-AES, BET, SEM-EDS, XRD, TEM, and FTIR among other techniques. The material shows catalytic activity in the acyloxylation reaction of 1,4-dioxane and cyclohexene under microwave irradiation. In parallel with the optimized catalyst synthesis, the use of microwaves allowed for a substantial improvement in the outcome of the reaction in terms of cleanliness, yield, and time.

In Vitro Antibacterial and Wound Healing Activities Evoked by Silver Nanoparticles Synthesized through Probiotic Bacteria

The prospective application of probiotics is an adjuvant for the advancement of novel antimicrobial and wound-healing agents. Currently, probiotic bacteria are utilized for the biosynthesis of nanoparticles in the development of innovative therapeutics. The present study aimed at using nanoparticle-conjugated probiotic bacteria for enhanced antibacterial and wound-healing activity. In the present investigation, the probiotic bacteria were isolated from a dairy source (milk from domestic herbivores). They screened for antibacterial activity against infection-causing Gram-negative (Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus) pathogens. Further, the probiotic strain with higher bactericidal activity was used to synthesize silver, selenium, and copper nanoparticles. The isolated strain was found to be Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and it only has the ability to synthesize silver nanoparticles. This was verified using Ultra violet-Visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, where the test solution turned brown and the greatest UV-Vis absorptions peaked at 425 nm. Optimization studies on the synthesis of AgNPs (silver nanoparticles) are presented and the results show that stable synthesis was obtained by using a concentration of 1mM silver nitrate (AgNO₃) at a temperature of 37 °C with pH 8. The FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) study confirmed the involvement of functional groups from the cell biomass that were involved in the reduction process. Additionally, biosynthesized AgNPs showed increased antioxidant and antibacterial activities. The nano silver had a size distribution of 14 nm and was recorded with HR-TEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy) examination. The EDX (energy dispersive X-ray) analysis revealed 57% of silver groups found in the nanoparticle production. The biosynthesized AgNPs show significant wound-healing capabilities with 96% of wound closure (fibroblast cells) being observed through an in vitro scratch-wound assay. The cytotoxic experiments demonstrated that the biosynthesized AgNPs are not extremely hazardous to the fibroblast cells. The present study provides a new platform for the green synthesis of AgNPs using probiotic bacteria, showing significant antibacterial and wound-healing potentials against infectious pathogens.

Recent Advances in Hybrid Materials of Metal Nanoparticles and Polyoxometalates

Polyoxometalates (POMs), anionic metal-oxygen nanoclusters that possess various composition-dependent properties, are widely used to modify the existing properties of metal nanoparticles and to endow them with new ones. Herein, we present an overview of recent advances in hybrid materials that consist of metal nanoparticles and POMs. Following a brief introduction on the inception of this area and its development, representative properties and applications of these materials in various fields such as electrochemistry, photochemistry, and catalysis are introduced. We discuss how the combination of two classic inorganic materials facilitates cooperative and synergistic behavior, and we also give personal perspectives on the future development of this field.

Surface functionalization of inorganic nanoparticles with ligands: a necessary step for their utility

The importance of protecting inorganic nanoparticles with organic ligands and thus imparting the needed stabilization as colloidal dispersions for their potential applications is highlighted in this review.

Sulfamic acid grafted to cross-linked chitosan by dendritic units: a bio-based, highly efficient and heterogeneous organocatalyst for green synthesis of 2,3-dihydroquinazoline derivatives

In this work, novel cross-linked chitosan by the G1 dendrimer from condensation of melamine and toluene-2,4-diisocyante terminated by sulfamic acid groups (CS-TDI-Me-TDI-NHSO₃H), as a bio-based and heterogeneous acidic organocatalyst, was designed and prepared. Also, the structure of the prepared organocatalyst was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis/derivative thermogravimetry (TGA/DTA). Subsequently, the catalytic performance of the biobased and dendritic CS-TDI-Me-TDI-NHSO₃H, as a multifunctional solid acid, was evaluated for the preparation of 2,3-dihydroquinazoline derivatives through a three-component reaction by following green chemistry principles. Some of the advantages of this new protocol include high to excellent yields and short reaction times as well as easy preparation and remarkable catalyst stability of the introduced acidic organocatalyst. The CS-TDI-Me-TDI-SO₃H catalyst can be used for up to five cycles for the preparation of quinazoline derivatives with a slight decrease in its catalytic activity.

Nanomaterials as a Sustainable Choice for Treating Wastewater: A Review

The removal of dyes from textile effluents utilizing advanced wastewater treatment methods with high efficiency and low cost has received substantial attention due to the rise in pollutants in water. The purpose of this work is to give a comprehensive analysis of the different treatments for removing chemical dyes from textile effluents. The capability and potential of conventional treatments for the degradation of dyeing compounds in aqueous media, as well as the influence of multiple parameters, such as the pH solution, initial dye concentration, and adsorbent dose, are presented in this study. This study is an overview of the scientific research literature on this topic, including nanoreductive and nanophotocatalyst processes, as well as nanoadsorbents and nanomembranes. For the purpose of treating sewage, the special properties of nanoparticles are currently being carefully researched. The ability of nanomaterials to remove organic matter, fungus, and viruses from wastewater is another benefit. Nanomaterials are employed in advanced oxidation techniques to clean wastewater. Additionally, because of their small dimensions, nanoparticles have a wide effective area of contact. Due to this, nanoparticles' adsorption and reactivity are powerful. The improvement of nanomaterial technology will be beneficial for the treatment of wastewater. This report also offers a thorough review of the distinctive properties of nanomaterials used in wastewater treatment, as well as their appropriate application and future possibilities. Since only a few types of nanomaterials have been produced, it is also important to focus on their technological feasibility in addition to their economic feasibility. According to this study, nanoparticles (NPs) have a significant adsorption area, efficient chemical reactions, and electrical conductivity that help treat wastewater effectively.
